The woman sharing a sofa with me in a windowless room in the Royal Opera House She is back in her beloved London to sing Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème several hundred times since her professional debut in the role at the Romanian National Opera in 1990 She is also promoting an album of Puccini’s songs At Paris’s Bastille Opera she told director Jonathan Miller that she didn’t care for his vision of Violetta’s death on a hospital ward in Verdi’s La Traviata an off-white beret with a spangly veil and a cream puffer jacket which she shows no signs of removing even though the room is if anything too warm she is true to the words on her website: “The world’s most glamorous opera star.” It’s hard to credit that her first husband was a plumbing engineer “I am not scary to men,” she tells me at one point ‘When I was in kindergarten I knew’ … Gheorghiu performing in Vienna in 2012 Photograph: Lisi Niesner/ReutersIf she didn’t exist Gheorghiu would need to be invented as counterpoint to the rest of us who bury our glories in faux humility “When you have a charisma,” the glamorous Romanian singer tells the bald Englishman when you have the beauty of what are you doing and everything you do with your body – well This is what I mean when I say opera is to touch the soul of another “We are all human beings but not all of us go on stage and are judged On every contract I have signed there have been only two names So performing artists are secular gods and the audience’s role is to adore but instead tells me when she is happiest on stage “It is not when I’m singing but the silences in between When thousands of people in the audience are silent throwing her scarf around her neck with one hand and clutching her heart with the other She’s extremely musical in that the music dictates her emotions.” And then there was that moment in Washington in 2009 when Gheorghiu Bruce Springsteen and Grace Bumbry received awards from President Obama “I was the only European,” Gheorghiu recalls She sang Vissi d’arte from Puccini’s Tosca My next life I want to be like you!’ I adore Meryl!” I’ve read this story already in her memoirs and in other interviews If it bears retelling it is because it recapitulates how Gheorghiu thinks about herself and her fairy-proffered bounty “Of all the talents the voice is the most sensitive,” she explains but when they start to play or sing on stage they become beautiful.” It would be a mistake to suppose that a sprinkling of fairy dust was all it took for Gheorghiu to become a great singer “I needed to choose to make a career or to have children because nobody can assure you that having children won’t change your body When you’re pregnant something happens to the body I don’t want to have a short-lived career like Maria Callas was also an opera singer but died in a car crash in 1996 leaving husband Andrei Dan and daughter Ioana Angela was married to fellow singer Roberto Alagna: the couple raised two girls and Alagna’s daughter Ornella from his first marriage “I was rehearsing Mimi and Roberto [Alagna He stood outside the door and heard me singing I am wearing a short kilt skirt and looking very good.” “You could say so!” Certainly they soon gave joint interviews in which they couldn’t keep their hands off each other Gheorghiu said that they always made love before a performance to relax their voices They were married by now-disgraced New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1996 while they were singing another Bohème at the Met Opera houses were quick to book them as a double act “I last saw him eight years ago in New York He is still angry with me.” She has for many years since been in a relationship with Romanian dentist Mihai Ciortea 22 years her junior and about whom she will tell me nothing “I sing three hours a day but I do not push my voice ‘Every performance is a new one Every moment is different’ … with Jonas Kaufmann in Adriana Lecouvreur at London’s Royal Opera House Photograph: Tristram Kenton/The GuardianBut doesn’t it become increasingly incongruous to be singing Mimi “It is true that the roles do not exist for older women I bring something new.” How can you bear to sing the same role year after year she is hoping to diversify her recorded repertoire Vivaldi - I want to leave a record of my interpretations of them We walk out into the London night past admirers who pay homage in various languages I watch her go – the force of destiny that Verdi and all those other mere men never dared imagine Angela Gheorgiu sings in La Bohème at the Royal Opera House, London Puccini is out on Signum Classics on 26 January Operavore keeps its finger on the pulse of the international opera scene We offer news bulletins from the around the globe and interviews with the players and personalities on the scene The classical music world would be a much drabber place without Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu this raven-haired beauty with the ravishing voice and imperious manner conjures up the glamour and romance of a 1940s film star quilted coat with a rakish white cap over her luxuriant locks Angela eclipses the expensive pastel décor of the Beau Rivage Hotel in Geneva.  We’re here to talk about her appearance at Covent Garden as Floria Tosca a role she tells me was written for another Romanian soprano though it suits Angela’s dramatic style down to the ground.  A palatial suite has been prepared for her visit a towering cake-stand of petits-fours and a tray full of mineral water for her precious vocal cords Angela’s glittering career has made her accustomed to star treatment a favourite of Japanese emperors and French film stars couldn’t be further from the grim industrial town of Adjud where she grew up during the Communist era The rags-to-riches story of Angela Gheorghiu is crying out to be made into a blockbuster movie “I’m waiting for a composer to make an opera for me but it’s a scriptwriter’s dream: how the pretty little train driver’s daughter with a stunningly mature voice sailed through music schools and the Bucharest Conservatoire during the dark days of the Ceaucescu regime; how she got her first break singing on television in Holland just days after the evil ruler’s fall; how she didn’t bother to audition for smaller opera houses but went straight to Covent Garden where she was immediately offered a star part – Mimì in La Bohème.  she decided to make her Royal Opera House debut with something less high-profile – Zerlina in Don Giovanni opposite Bryn Terfel’s Masetto – but she went on to sing Mimì with huge success Bryn has remained a friend ever since.  The fairytale continued when she fell in love with Roberto Alagna her gorgeous Italian-French co-star in La Bohème and they became opera’s most romantic couple in spite of frequent press reports of their split They spent Christmas in Bucharest with their extended family: Uana Roberto’s daughter from his first marriage.  “We’re used to juggling our schedules Covent Garden has a special place in Angela’s heart; whenever possible she likes to sing a new part in a new production in this venerable house.  “That’s why I said yes to my first Tosca on stage At the Opera House they are all my friends and family – the orchestra Fingers crossed it’s going to be – wow The tenor Marcelo Alvarez and the baritone Bryn Terfel – more than this it’s impossible to have Angela has already made a movie and a recording of the opera with Roberto Alagna a performance of such intensity and passion that you can almost feel the heat coming off the CD player we are really great friends and he has a very good voice.”  High praise indeed from the exacting Angela What does she feel about the cuddly Bryn Terfel playing her evil tormentor Won’t it be hard to stick a dagger into him?  When we performed the second act at a Metropolitan Opera gala in September The Covent Garden production of Tosca is the first new staging since the Zeffirelli production for Maria Callas.  “The last production was older than me,” says Angela scornfully I don’t want that to happen again.”  Could she be referring to a La Traviata in Madrid which she pulled out of in 2003 calling it “a vulgar production full of sexual references” and it’s a safe bet that the audience will like it too.  She justifies her reputation for being demanding by saying: “I feel responsible for every production When I’m on stage I want everybody around me She has no objections to being described as a diva ‘You are a woman’ or ‘You are a soprano.’ I am on stage and I’m doing this because I like to be admired Being called this is the price you have to pay.”  That melting voice with dark depths and an enviable range is as fresh as it was 20 years ago In fact I like myself more than when I was 30.”  She is relaxed about what she eats and drinks but she’s aware of her responsibility to her instrument: “You can get another piano People say that having a wide throat is the reason for her rich sound “Everything goes into that sound – your mouth Angela’s future holds more chances to dazzle She is singing Carmen and her diary is full She’s also recording a disc of Mozart arias.  And his women are very strong characters.”  the family schedule may have to be readjusted now that Roberto has decided to pursue a different kind of repertoire.  “He’s recording French operetta and Cole Porter I don’t know how that will change our life and we’ve hardly discussed it.”  Angela admits that she too has dipped her toe into the waters of crossover recording a pop song by a Romanian composer I want
