but is also the biggest seed processing station in Romania
The facility has been operating since 2006 and produces corn and sunflower Pioneer seeds for European customers
A bulk storage and conditioning facility will now be possible thanks to the new capital investment project
This addition will allow Corteva to cut the supply chain down
boost its reliability and agility and increase European processing capacity in order to support growth
The newest investment brings the total funds put into the Afumati seed production facility to €74m
“Our new investment will help farmers to obtain better results and satisfy an increased demand for the high-quality sunflower seeds as we strive to help farmers improve performance,” stated Corteva Agriscience Romania & Moldova Country Leader Jean Ionescu
“One of the most important pillars of our company is the customer focus
We will continue to strengthen our connection with Romanian farmers
as well as food producers and consumers across Europe
developing the agility and responsiveness needed to thrive,” added Jean-Phillipe Riffat

The Afumati facility employs nearly 300 permanent and seasonal workers, with the new investment creating 20 contractor positions. Afumati’s expansion aligns with Corteva’s 2030 Sustainability Commitments
The Province expanded its support for British Columbia (B.C.) seed growers in order to “enhance and expand their operations, bolster food security and create a thriving food economy,” said a press release from BC Gov News
“There’s so much potential contained in the thin coat of a seed
seeds can grow into nutritious food for B.C
we’re helping produce seeds adapted to B.C.’s unique climate regions
so will our economy and food security.”
education workshops and access to seed-cleaning equipment that I’ve benefited from will help other growers increase production of locally grown and adapted seed varieties,” shared Arzeena Hamir
“More local seeds will improve the resiliency of food and farming as we weather climate change and other challenges.”
“Through ongoing education and help establishing efficient and shared production systems
we can create a secure food system that values seeds as a shared resource that’s stewarded by growers for future generations,” said David Catzel
BC Seed Security program manager with FarmFolk CityFolk
“Continued support from the Province will allow us to build this system together
feeding British Columbians and ensuring we can do so into the future.”
The assistance follows the release of a report by FarmFolk CityFolk

Romania (AP) — Truck drivers and farmers protested across Romania again on Monday as negotiations with the coalition government over lower taxes
higher subsidies and other demands failed to reach any agreements
and other cities throughout the European Union nation
It was the sixth straight day of demonstrations
compensation for losses caused by imports from neighboring Ukraine
Truck drivers are calling for lower tax and insurance rates
and have complained about lengthy waiting times at the borders
Meetings between the protesters and the agriculture and transport ministries were held over the weekend
The demonstrators on Saturday also caused brief blockades at the border with Ukraine in the northeast
Ukrainian border authorities said on Telegram
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called for an “urgent drafting” of legislation to resolve the protesters’ complaints
“We continue to negotiate in good faith with the protesters
We are fully open to dialogue,” Ciolacu said in a meeting with ministers involved in negotiating with the protesters
according to a statement issued by his office
The Alliance for Agriculture and Cooperation sent a document to the agricultural ministry on Monday listing 15 demands before a planned meeting between the parties later in the day
An alliance representative said after Monday's talks that the agriculture minister approved many of the farmers’ requests and that the protests would “probably” be suspended
the alliance had threatened to “urgently initiate” steps to expand the demonstrations if a series of deadlines weren't met
Romania’s national traffic police advised drivers to avoid areas where protests are being held to help ease traffic flows
some 5.7 million Romanians live scattered across Europe
some Romanian truckers have managed to create a community of solidarity within this diaspora
In the run-up to the 2019 European elections, a Romanian politician made some unflattering comments about the profession of lorry driver. "The guys insisted on teaching him a lesson", recalls 56-year-old Adriana Muresan. This female Romanian lorry driver, who lives in Spain
The offended Romanian truckers determined to vote en masse
it was inconvenient to get inside nearby cities with their trucks in order to vote
Nor could they easily just park up and walk
So Muresan asked around some Romanian Facebook groups for people who might give them a lift
Muresan began to put the truck drivers in touch with these Romanians from the diaspora

Five years later, that one-off initiative is now a mutual-aid group with more than 148,000 members: the RoOmenia Association Volunteers in Europe
It is where Romanians living abroad can lend each other a hand when they are in need
The kinds of services rendered can be simple
such as offering help with language and transport to a lorry driver who needs to go to the dentist in a German village
But the help can be substantial too: providing shelter to temporarily homeless seasonal workers; finding work for someone who is struggling financially; or putting abuse victims in touch with the relevant local organisation
"There are wonderful stories," says Adriana Muresan
we call ourselves 'RoOmenia' [a play on the Romanian word for 'humanity' or 'goodness']
because it's about giving without the expectation of anything in return
We want to change the country through deeds
showing that acts of generosity can transform you
[...] We have sown seeds in Romania and I am very proud."
An estimated 5.7 million Romanians – roughly a quarter of the total number of Romanian nationals – are expatriated across Europe
Some 13.8% of Romania's children – more than half a million – had one or both parents working abroad between 2021 and 2022
"The only thing I regret in life is taking grandchildren away from their grandparents", says Dragos, who has been running a hardware store in Spain for two decades. He belongs to a generation afflicted by guilt. In Romania it is known as the "Italy Syndrome": the anguish experienced by those who care for other people's relatives while neglecting their own
Most of these people were invisible until the pandemic. Then they became indispensable, says Adriana Muresan. In Germany, flight restrictions were even lifted on seasonal workers so that the asparagus harvest would not go to waste. It was during the pandemic that the Romanian expat group exploded
"I had no idea there were so many Romanian seasonal workers," says Muresan
"These people were left on the street with nothing.” She recounts the upsetting experience of being contacted by 38 female seasonal workers in the Italian Alps
It triggered an overwhelming response: "Romanians opened the doors of their houses: first in Italy
I have seven’..." She says that the first thing to do was to ask for the homeless Romanians' ID cards and pass them to the consulate to check that they had no criminal record
"they were going to be taken in by someone"
She is candid: "There were a few problems of cohabitation
Muresan estimates that around 1,500 people were taken in
I buy medicines from Western Europe and bring them back to Romania using volunteers who drive trucks."
discovered RoOmenia through an online car forum when a user asked for help and was directed to the group
it's the same with good things – you involuntarily join them"
"It's a huge community.” He says that the real volunteers are just a small group
Adriana Muresan says that RoOmenia currently works on the basis of a map of volunteers
we tag them.” Each country has a coordinator with hundreds of volunteers who make themselves available 24 hours a day and via chat for emergencies
Muresan is often asked how she has managed to get so many people involved: "It's easy, everyone has a place here and they do whatever they want to do. If animals are your thing
If you’re interested in medicines for children
If you want to go out at Christmas with some cakes for truck drivers who are alone in a car park
Everyone can do whatever they want to do and are able to do"
Muresan is currently taking permanent leave from her job on the road
she says that she has not been asked to go into politics
Muresan explains that the group only approves requests that are "urgent, important and verified". The aim is to prevent fraud and avoid wasting the time of the volunteers.
RoOmenia's next campaign will target Romanian home-help workers. The plan is for volunteers who live nearby to meet them over a coffee and have a chat. "These people need to talk and speak in their language", explains Adriana Muresan. "To heal their souls and their loneliness a bit."
