When Gina Bleedorn ’02 was in her senior year at Furman University
she came to a fork in the road – literally
She could go left to the Daniel Music Building
but she was expected soon at vocal practice in the building on the left
Even though she had largely completed her music major
she found herself drawn to art and design after taking an introductory graphic design course
This love for creativity and design changed her career trajectory completely
from initially striving to be a soloist singer to instead working in branding
“I took all of the art classes I could,” said Bleedorn
“I ended up with a music major but a portfolio of full of (art) work.”
The decision to listen to her heart paid off: Bleedorn is now president of brand-experience company Adrenaline
which recently surpassed $100 million in revenue
Adrenaline is an end-to-end brand experience company serving the financial industry
Clients range from small community banks and credit unions to some of the largest banks in the country
“We shape anywhere the brand is experienced by consumers,” said Bleedorn
“In practice that looks like creating brands and marketing
Bleedorn credits much of her success to her experience at Furman
Although she didn’t take the path to singing professionally
studying music performance was pivotal for her
“My vocal performance experience enabled me to speak in front of audiences with ease
since I was so used to being in front of a concert hall
I had no idea in college that skill would serve me the way it does now,” she said
feel like they have to have their career mapped out in college
What was also formative for her was the spirit at Furman
which she said felt like a safe ecosystem to grow up in
“There was an undercurrent at Furman that your future can be what you make it,” she said
“It was empowering and confidence building
I remember taking this spirit to internships over the summer.”
Her first job out of college at 22 was also an internship at a company called Adrenaline
Adrenaline was acquired by a bigger company
Using the confidence she gathered at Furman
she was very involved in convincing the new leadership that aspects of the parent company should be put under the Adrenaline brand
with interior design and full buildout of customer spaces
Bleedorn and three colleagues bought Adrenaline from that same parent company
she became president of the company in its current iteration
Bleedorn suggests: “Always follow what feels right
Follow your passion and what you want to do
know it’s an advantageous one because it keeps expanding
Brand value and investing in brand experience is trickling down to the masses of all companies
or are motivated to shape customer experiences in any way
brand experience is a great area to be in.”

HOST: We hear a lot about red and blue in politics
What about the colors that Polly has picked
Ari Daniel reports on how parrots create the yellows and reds in their plumage.ARI DANIEL
BYLINE: Some birds are feathered tufts of color so resplendent they do anything but blend in with their surroundings.JOE CORBO: You have to ask why birds would do this
and one of the leading hypotheses is that the male has elaborate ornaments or colors that are attractive to the female.DANIEL: Joe Corbo is a biologist at Washington University in St
Consider for a moment the goldfinch or the cardinal.CORBO: Most birds that have bright yellow or red feathers are using carotenoids to make those colors.DANIEL: Carotenoids are a kind of pigment.CORBO: The reason that a bird's egg's yolk is a bright yellow orange is because it's full of carotenoids
the bird mobilizes the carotenoids from the yolk and then deposits them in the developing feathers.DANIEL: And then
much like people need vitamins from food because the human body doesn't make them
the only way for birds to get carotenoid pigments is for them to eat them.CORBO: So they obtain them from their diet.DANIEL: There is a notable exception
Roberto Arbore is an evolutionary biologist at the University of Porto in Portugal.ROBERTO ARBORE: Parrots do it different
They do not rely on what they get from the diet.DANIEL: Scientists have known about these special pigments but not really how parrots use them to create their diverse colors
So Arbore and his colleagues turned to the dusky lory
a parrot the size of an eggplant.ARBORE: It's a very obscure species that lives in remote places
They come from Papua New Guinea.DANIEL: The dusky lory is black and ringed with one of two colors.ARBORE: Red or yellow.CORBO: The yellow color is actually dominant to the red genetically.DANIEL: Joe Corbo says they were able to trace this either-or coloration
one that they found makes an enzyme that shows up in lots of creatures
the enzyme converts the red pigment into the yellow one by making a small change to the molecule.CORBO: And so the animal appears to be able to control the expression levels of this enzyme and thereby tune the relative ratio of red to yellow pigment.DANIEL: When Corbo and his colleagues looked at another kind of parrot
They suspect it's true in a wide range of parrot species
they took the enzyme out of the birds and put it into yeast - yes
yeast - and found it again made the color change they expected.ARBORE: And this was the final proof
So now we know definitely a little bit more about how one of the most colorful groups of animals in the world make their colors.DANIEL: The research is published in the journal Science.ROSALYN PRICE-WALDMAN: It is a huge step forward in avian color genetics.DANIEL: Rosalyn Price-Waldman is an evolutionary biologist finishing up her Ph.D
at Princeton University who wasn't involved in the research
She says the findings open the door to asking what else these colors may reveal about parrots.PRICE-WALDMAN: People are very interested in
what the pigment content of a feather can tell us about an organism's health or stress or other aspects of its biology.DANIEL: As for Roberto Arbore
he agrees this is just the beginning.ARBORE: I will say it actually adds a new layer of magic
and now I'm considering working on them for the rest of my career.DANIEL: Next up
Arbore says he and his colleagues want to examine the genes in parrots responsible for creating the color blue

which is why it's often associated with older adults — but it usually starts in childhood
founder and director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services in San Francisco
told a group of professionals who work with seniors recently
at a conference hosted by Philadelphia Corporation for Aging
He said people whose homes later become overwhelmed with stuff often begin having dysfunctional relationships with things between ages 11 to 15
They may cling passionately to clothes that no longer fit or toys meant for much younger children
This is an opportunity for parents to teach them how to organize their possessions and discard items they no longer need
skills that are often deficient in adult hoarders
Arbore thinks much hoarding also stems from trauma or emotional pain
Hoarders fill the emotional holes in their lives with things that seem more trustworthy and comforting to them than their fellow human beings
He said he has had success at reducing hoarding by helping people address their underlying pain and learn better ways to cope
who are more likely to have dementia and physical problems
hoarding can also increase the risk of debilitating falls and isolation
The older population can be especially difficult to work with because their behavior is entrenched and they have a negative image of mental health treatment

Some hoarders have a similar attitude toward animals
"What do you see?" Arbore often asks hoarders

Just clearing out their stuff for them doesn't work
Most end up filling up the space again because they're more comfortable amid clutter

Archaeologists in Spain unearthed the sword-sharpening stone with an eye-catching shape in a destroyed 15th-century tower
A carved stone penis found buried in the rubble of a demolished medieval Spanish tower was likely used to sharpen weapons
Archaeologists with Arbore Arqueoloxía
found the 6-inch-long (15 centimeters) artifact on May 19 during an excavation at an archaeological site in the Ría de Vigo estuary of northwestern Spain
The site once housed a medieval complex punctuated by a tower that had been destroyed during the Irmañdino Revolts

While it's not uncommon for archaeologists to find sharpening stones at various medieval sites around the world
the phallic shape of this artifact makes it stand out

Sharpening stones are easy to identify "as they still hold traces and marks of the materials they sharpened," Peña-Pascual said
"the object retains traces of wear on one side compatible with its use as a sharpening stone."
Although the archaeologists aren't sure of the piece's exact meaning
they think its location at the destroyed tower offers a clue

"The possible meaning that a culture gives to an object is much more difficult to understand," Peña-Pascual said
"The context in which we find the stone penis is that of a fortress destroyed during an anti-seigneurial revolt." (A seigneurial is the territory held by a feudal lord.)
The phallic symbol during that time was considered an "object of veneration" and was not considered vulgar
It was used as protection from evil and has been depicted in numerous medieval artifacts

Here's what to do about itAn expert discusses what to do about bullying among elders
Most of us probably think of kids when we think of bullies
Patrick Arbore thinks of an old man he watched trip a frail old woman in the senior facility where they both lived
He also thinks of a group of women elsewhere who taunted a new resident for speaking Spanish
and of an elderly resident who made a manager's life so miserable that she quit
The bully smiled broadly when the manager announced her resignation
"That teenage boy who was the terror in your high school grew up and he just got better at it," said Arbore, who spoke Thursday at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging's Regional Conference on Aging, a three-day event that drew about 600 professionals who work with older adults and their families.
Arbore, who grew up on a Western Pennsylvania dairy farm, also thinks of his father and grandmother, who he says were bullies. Exposure to them made him repress his own anger, and he became depressed and suicidal. But his experience also convinced him that both victims and bullies deserve compassion.
"Bullying is taught," he said, and it often stems from fear and inadequacy. "People who bully have an intense desire to be in control. What that reveals underneath is insecurity," said Arbore, founder and director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services at the Institute on Aging in San Francisco.
Arbore said he confronted the man he'd seen trip his fellow resident. She'd managed not to fall, but her lunch went flying. She cried when she got to her table. The man refused to meet Arbore's eyes and denied that he had done anything. Arbore talked to him again later and his anger spilled out. He hated the woman, he said. He hated old people and he didn't want to be like her.
The man's actions revealed his "internalized ageism," Arbore said.
Americans have gotten better at acknowledging bullying in schools, but they've been slower to confront the reality of bullying among seniors, Arbore said. Ten to 20 percent of seniors reported exposure to aggression by other older adults, usually verbal abuse, one study found. He thinks the behavior is underreported. Seniors are afraid to tell, and staff may be afraid that bullies will focus on them. The bullies may also be cunning enough to ingratiate themselves with managers.
Senior victims are often smaller and frailer than their bullies. Some may have dementia or anxiety, or even a history of abuse. Bullying often occurs when the staff isn't watching, in dining rooms where newcomers are shunned at certain tables and communal areas where a bully controls the television. Even Facebook can be a forum for bullying and exclusion.
The abuse may leave victims depressed and isolated. Arbore said bullies are dangerous because they inspire more bullying and fuel hate.
While some victims can learn to be more assertive, others must rely on staff to create an environment where everyone knows that bullying is unacceptable, Arbore said.
Bullies often have no idea how their actions affect others, he said. Empathy can be taught. Sometimes it's helpful for a staff member to mediate a discussion between bully and victim, concluding with the bully agreeing to stop.
Staff, he said, can "teach that bully that there are other people and it's OK if they are different than you are, and you're not in charge of the moral compass."

I immediately knew I’d be declaring my intent to move into this cat sanctuary designed to look like a suburban house from the 1970s
and Square Paws’ design for the remodel paid homage to the space’s past with snappy mid-century-inspired designs
and we fashioned these spaces as suburban rooms as if the resident cats fully own the house
Our inspiration was mid-century modern in all our faux furnishings and appliances,” Mario writes

And I’m of course joking… I won’t ACTUALLY be moving into this cat sanctuary

puoi gareggiare in totale sicurezza a qualsiasi regata

the felines who own Michele and Tim Sanders
humans who are attuned with their cats’ needs and wants
“I’ve always recognized that our cats are intelligent beings who need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise,” Michele Sanders said
the couple allowed the cats access to a screened and vaulted lanai so they could watch the wildlife without harming them
It was not a particularly outstanding space
and when Hurricane Irma did her job on the lanai and the rest of Brevard
it was even less inviting. A lush jungle of ferns
date palms and other plants offered plenty of promise for redemption
The Sanders contacted architect and cat enthusiast Mario Arbore for help in redesigning their Melbourne “catio.” Arbore founded Square Paws
a company that specializes in indoor cat furniture
“We didn’t have a theme,” said Sanders
plus some wall-mounted steps and a lounge would do the trick
More: Palm Bay woman creates winning Oktoberfest Pizza for this year's Pillsbury Bake-Off
noticed the couple enjoyed the Asian flavor of a koi pond, installed to the right of the lanai
Its stone Buddha and traditional Japanese lanterns
sparked the thought of going with a Japanese cat garden concept
we wanted to fill it with items one would encounter in a Japanese garden: a river
some benches and a Torii (the traditional gate found at Shinto temples),” Arbore said
More: Living green sculptures wow visitors at Epcot Flower & Garden Festival
the lanai was ready for its transformation into a Japanese cat garden
The design was complete with a hand-cut black Kanji symbol that doubles as a cat shelf
which must be what the kitties think they’re in as they laze about the serene space
the catio offers elements that flow to promote harmony
a state Michele Sanders felt her cats needed
The three felines have found their zen within the screened spaces and life is well-balanced in the Sanders household
“Andre loves to sun himself on the benches just below the window,” Sanders said
literally explodes out of the cat door each morning to inspect his territory
which he reaches by leaping from the decorative bridge as Andre languidly prefers to follow the sun’s rays
Gryfin is fond of the kit tea house and the sky perch
“Gryfin also likes to lie on his back with his feet up in the air at the center of the bridge,” Sanders said
the cats’ lives indoors would have been dull and claustrophobic
“Every cat deserves a catio,” Sanders said
Arbore designed the accents for easy removal during storms
The bridge’s lag-screw anchoring and the mortise and tenon joints of the tea house base and roof make for quick removal should winds threaten.
The catio is not only feline-friendly; it also is a magnet for humans
“We expanded the human perception of the lanai space as being part of the Florida room and of the koi pond,” Arbore said
“We expanded the catio for both humans and cats to feel like it is part of the garden outside of the screen
This last part we accomplished with a combination of landscape uplighting and by placing Buddhist artifacts that Michele and Tim already had in strategic places in the exterior garden so they are as visually connected to the catio as the interior elements are.”
The Sanderses think the catio is indeed the cat’s meow
“Mario has created such a serene atmosphere for the cat and us,” Michele Sanders said
“It is now a place of such beauty and calm that we want to be there as much as possible
Everyone who sees it is stunned by its quiet grace.”
They fought in Korea and served in Vietnam
refuse to complain about slights and unfairness of life
Yet in the twilight of their productive lives
some seniors are opting for the unthinkable
"It's been my concern since 1973," said Dr
director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention in San Francisco
We tend not the think of the value and importance older people bring to our culture."
Arbore said a combination of factors: Social isolation
prescription drugs and illness have combined to make the incidence of suicide increasingly prevalent among seniors
the population that has the highest rate of suicide is older people 85-plus," he said
They want to say they have the highest rate because of concerns about their health and wellness
According to the American Psychiatric Association
the suicide rate among seniors is 50 per 100,000 people
in contrast to the national rate of 13 per 100,000 people of all ages
"To have that rate for a group of people is really extreme," he said
"The sad thing from my perspective is when people hear of someone 85 committing suicide
I don't think it registers in a really powerful way
is because older adults are prescribed so many medications
which are very dangerous in large doses," said Arbore's colleague
"It may be an incident not recognized as a suicide."
the walls of one hallway at the Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center are covered by handmade quilts stitched in memory of people lost to suicide
"We're on our fourth one," said Carole Vesely
Among those remembered are several senior men
Vesely said it's not unusual for an elderly person to commit suicide and for their extended family not to know because the stigma for that generation is so great
"It poses some serious challenges," she said
"That population is difficult to get to connect with us
We do not have individuals over 65 calling our crisis line as often they should
The community at large struggles with thinking that an elderly person would take his life
Families are not able to come to grips with an elderly person killing themselves."
Vesely said Stark County's suicide rate has shown no real decline since 2010
residents older than 65 made up 17 percent of Stark County's population but accounted for 23 percent of suicides
"The economy is one of the biggest factors," Vesely said
"We're seeing the 45- to 65-year-old range
that time when job stability and relationships come into question
Those are supposed to be the years where people are comfortable where they are."
Vesely said warning signs for suicidal seniors include depression
loss of appetite or sleep or unexpectedly giving away prized possessions
"There's still some belief that it's normal for the elderly to get depressed; it isn't," she said
"The sign most researchers would identify as a very
very strong risk factor is depression," Arbore said
"When 'psychiatric autopsies' have been performed on people who died by suicide
as high as 89 percent of the deaths were related to depression
The other factor has to do with functionality
"When older people find themselves unable to be as mobile as before
aren't as visible in the behavioral health arena
there have been four (previous) attempts," she said
which tells me that seniors use the most lethal means: Guns
Vesely stressed that the Crisis Center's 24-hour hotline is not just for people considering suicide
Arbore and Skultety call loneliness a "health epidemic" because of its adverse effects
"Loneliness is the big dread of our time," Arbore said
"It's very difficult for people to acknowledge it
could be that people are so overmedicated they can't participate
technology relieves loneliness," Skultety said
"People make the assumption that no one's lonely these days
are exhibiting much higher rates of depression than people who are not."
Because mental illness-related factors such as medication and poor eating habits can shorten a person's life by nine to 15 years
the emphasis in the field now is creating "individually directed" treatment plans
Alliance Community Hospital and Affinity Medical Center in Massillon both have geriatric psychiatric care units
she strongly recommends first taking a suicidal senior to the emergency room
explaining that it's the least-intimidating venue
"That's what I teach police also," she said
Vesely urges people to start a dialogue if they suspect a senior family member may be struggling
"I've worked here for 26 years and I've never heard the classic
'I'm a burden to my family,' or 'I can't go on another day.' A family needs to pick up on those kinds of comments."
"The concept of the quality of life is really important," she said
'How can we make you get connected back to those things that were important to you?' It may just be seeing more of the family
It'll be different things for different people
They're important discussions for mental and physical health."
"What crosses all age groups is we know life is short
An older person wants to live no less than a younger person
when every age has its contributions to make."
"Eighty percent of people who kill themselves give warning signs," Vesely said

Arbori can say he has been on TV since he was two days old
We got out of the car to go home and [the ambience] had light from the ones that went off themselves
The light goes off and we are in total darkness
where did my eyes go?' because you did not realize that you simply turned off the light
When Snow asked who the most beautiful kindergarten was
She even confessed she kissed both of them
And Arbori responded to "why a?" How does a four year old boy explain that he should be monogamous
Bora has her doubts as to whether to include in a show where children's attention center is
"We who are on television are trying to keep children away from television
Created by
Viera architect Mario Arbore will bring the Eiffel Tower to Los Angeles
but a reasonable facsimile transformed by Arbore into cat furniture that will debut at CatConLA
an annual international showcase of the world’s most cat-centric products
Arbore delights in using his considerable architectural skills for Square Paws
the company he launched a couple of years ago to focus on handcrafted
handpainted one-of-a-kind cat furniture any kitty would adore
a grandfather clock and even a lifeguard’s stand have all been redesigned by Arbore from a cat’s perspective
“We take iconic elements and fashion them in a form pets can interact with,” said Arbore
Our cat towers are made to delight both pets and people.”
for cats love exploring these whimsical structures and people love looking at the cats doing their thing on the cat towers
“Even strangers tend to react differently to the cats themselves when they see them playing on the towers,” said Arbore
Square Paws towers are for pampered and well-funded felines
but Arbore believes there is a definite market for this upscale pet furniture
according to the American Pet Products Association
which annually hosts Global Pet Expo at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando
The massive trade show attracts more than 6,000 buyers from around the world to its 13 football fields' worth of pet products
cat and dog furnishings were modest and utilitarian
but now the sky is the limit to make your BFF
comfortable at the same time that the accessories add pizzazz to the owner’s home décor
Any of Square Paws designs could become a focal point in a room
as can the custom-made dog beds made for Tails at the Barkery pet boutique and bakery in Cocoa Village
The $275 to $325 lounge exudes class and are even individually signed by the artist
“They are wonderfully over the top,” said Barkery owner Pam Shaia
there could probably be some “accidents” on the bed
but it was designed with just this sort of eventuality in mind
“The bed comes with a bed pillow that can be detached
Pet owners can even turn to books that will help them to successfully incorporate pet furniture into their home landscape
pet columnist for the New York Post is also the author of Animal House Style: Designing a Home to Share with Your Pets
which gives pet lovers plenty of idea fodder for spaces that are chic yet pet-friendly
pet furnishings were way above the standard dog beds and cat scratching posts
offers small dog-sized teepees inspired by the minimalism of Scandinavian design
The striking black-and-white pup hideaways are uber cute and at $85 not much more than a run-of-the-mill bed
but with several hidden perches covered with carpeting
Also represented at the Pet Expo was Enchanted Home Pet
furniture-quality versions of sofas and loungers for dogs
can even be outfitted with the SNOOzZzONE Pet Comfort System
which allows the pet parents to enhance the comfort of their furry charges by selecting from specialized layers to insert into the cushion cover
allergen liner and self-warming thermal reflective layers
The little sofas’ styles range from art deco in a plush micro-velvet blend fabric to naihead-trimmed faux leather club chairs
Since the beds also feature a pocket for toy storage
Even utilitarian products such as pet bowls are now stylish
One of the classiest bowls in the spotlight at the Pet Expo was Dr
made with #304 food service-grade stainless steel
Although the bowl’s design is primarily geared to prevent “whisker fatigue,” which apparently annoys cats when eating from a traditional bowl
Catsby’s is so sleek it is sculptural in design and at home in a variety of decors
necessary kitty evils that never did much for any room in the house
a modular scratching post collection that can double up nicely as people furniture
Although made from post-consumer recycled paper
it can easily support more than 300 pounds
Five different shapes fit together in endless possibilities for bookcases
coffee tables and wall groupings that the cats can use for scratching and sitting purposes
Dog houses are also not what they used to be. At the 2016 Dream Home in Merritt Island
HGTV designers created a dog house that mimicked the architecture of the main house
Manufacturers such as Advantek have engineered upscale and themed doggie homes such as the Saloon Dog House
touted by the California company as a place “your puppy parna’ will love to rest his bones.”
Its MSRP of $499.99 could cause sticker shock
but the cutey-pie abode is made from furniture-grade
and with a shaded porch and multiple windows for ventilation
With so many unique furnishing options for dogs and cats
the pet people don’t have to sacrifice style because they’re living with animals
“The trend is for people to treat their pets like children and these folks are willing to spend the money on these products,” said Arbore

make up the 200,000 people situated in Africa’s Great Rift Valley.
The people of the Omo Valley are still primarily herders and farmers
While they have yet to be truly touched by globalization, they could soon disappear. Their way of life is being threatened by a massive hydroelectric dam.
Arroyo explained his desire to photograph the tribes in a recent interview with MyModernMet:
For years, I wanted to photograph the people from the tribes in the remote Omo Valley, a place of exceptional anthropological value and amazing beauty. It was a fun and challenging journey full of adventures and great experiences, during which I got to spend some time learning about the amazing cultural heritage of the ancient tribes in the region.

Link copiedShareShare articleThe public has not lodged any submissions on a preliminary determination to protect Mount Kaputar's rare neon-pink giant slugs.
The New South Wales Scientific Committee announced in May it wanted to list the rare ecological community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act.
The listing also includes rare land snails, plants, fungi and a range of fauna.
Deputy Chair of the Committee, Dr Andrea Wilson, says the ecological community is threatened by feral pigs and black rats and is facing a very high risk of extinction.
"These organisms are quite special because some of them are endemic to this community so they occur nowhere else in the the world and with no other combination of species in the world," she said.
"So, they're perched up the top of Mount Kaputar in the National Park there and once species are listed and once communities have that attention to them it does, sometimes, mean that more information is found out about them."
The pink slugs are between 4-6cm wide and between 15-20cm long.
Dr Wilson says she's not troubled by the lack of responses during the submission period.
"The way I interpret that is we've hopefully captured everything that we can; that we've spoken to all the right people in advance; all the information that's available has been collected; and the communities to whom this public submission has been distributed have had a chance to have a look," she said.
"What we usually take no submissions to mean is that there isn't any disagreement and we can move forward with the listing process."
