09/04/2025 - Set against Romania’s post-revolution backdrop
the film uncovers a forgotten chapter of history while following a family’s journey towards reconciliation
Y is the debut feature co-directed by Romanian actress Maria Popistașu and screenwriter Alexandru Baciu
Set against the backdrop of post-revolution Romania
the film uncovers a forgotten chapter of the nation’s history while telling a deeply personal story of reckoning and reconciliation
Currently at its final post-production stage
Y has participated in several key industry platforms and is gearing up for its release
who have been living a carefree life thanks to the fortune of her grandmother
Her sudden death disrupts the family’s fragile balance – especially for Olga
who is haunted by a deathbed confession: the international adoption files Ileana handled after the Romanian Revolution are riddled with irregularities
and the fates of several children remain unknown
To clear her grandmother’s name and confront her own moral dilemma
Olga is compelled to unearth painful truths and make peace with the past
The duo previously co-directed the short The Seagull
The film’s crew includes Carmen Tofeni as director of photography
production designers Iulia Fulicea and Victor Fulicea
Producer Anamaria Antoci, of Tangaj Production
told Cineuropa: “Y presents a compelling perspective on legacy
moral responsibility and the unseen costs of personal comfort
What began as a reflection on inheritance evolved into a nuanced exploration of family dynamics and unresolved histories
The film stands out for its courage in addressing a rarely discussed chapter in Romania’s recent past
It is a project that challenges both its creators and its audience to re-examine the boundaries of personal accountability.”
Y has been presented at major industry platforms
The film will be distributed in Romania by Tribe Films

“The idea of the film came to us before the pandemic
I guess right after we co-directed our short The Seagull / Pescărușul
my dream about directing met Maria’s wish to generate her own projects as a mean to alleviate ‘the phone that doesn’t ring’ syndrome that every actor has”
Popistașu and Baciu used the method applied to all the scripts that Baciu wrote together with Răzvan Rădulescu and Radu Muntean for Muntean’s films
After long discussions and working on treatment
they shared the sequences equally and wrote them chronologically
“The challenge was to manage to write together but after that
“I cannot say that I wanted so badly to direct
as I primarily wanted to play more and to write
directing appealed to me because it seemed to allow me to keep control as much as possible over the initial idea
and this is I guess the most surprising satisfaction that I had from this experience”
representatives of Tangaj Production told FNE
Y was shot in Bucharest in February – March 2024
It is expected to premiere in the summer – autumn of 2025
and Tribe Films will release it in Romania
“No matter how hard and frustrating it is sometimes
the satisfaction of generating a project completely is big enough to make you want to repeat it
Alex Baciu co-wrote nearly all Radu Muntean’s feature films and also co-directed with him the documentary Vorbitor (2011)

Forget Count Dracula’s castle; Transylvania’s really frightful place is ‘haunted’ forest Hoia Baciu
Sophie Buchan goes for a night-time stroll
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
The trees stop in a uniform oval where nothing grows and where
“I found 60 people from Bucharest trying to open a gate into another dimension.”
Romania’s second city in the depths of Transylvania
It has been called the creepiest forest in the world
It defies the investigations of soil scientists and attracts Romanian witches
and people who try to cleanse the forest of evil through the medium of yoga
the words “Transylvania” and “Halloween” conjure up a pre-Twilight Edward Cullen scaling the walls of his castle
But tourists coming to Romania for a Dracula experience are likely to leave disappointed
Romania is resistant to the Dracula legend
the most explicitly Dracula-themed attraction
has only a tenuous connection to Stoker’s creation
plus the priggish feel of a National Trust property
on a night-time tour of the Hoia Baciu Forest
trying to find a real fright in autumnal Transylvania
Named after a shepherd who went missing in the forest with a flock of 200 sheep
Hoia Baciu came to international attention in 1968 when Emil Barnea
photographed what he claimed was a UFO hovering over The Clearing
What differentiates this story from other UFO claims is that Barnea had nothing to gain from reporting the sighting
The Communist government equated a belief in the paranormal with madness and state-sabotage
and Barnea lost his job in a country which had no support for the sacked
visitors to the forest report strange symptoms – nausea
the feeling of being watched – and the failure of electronic devices
“Ectoplasms” are routinely seen by joggers brave enough to enter
Alex shows us pictures of the forest photobombed by shadowy figures
One shows a man in the traditional dress of northern Romania – a very local ghost
Alex likes to maintain a healthy distance from the more full-on forest myths – like the story of the five-year-old girl who disappeared into the forest
unchanged and in the same clothes - yet even he’s not immune to the legends of Hoia Baciu
I’d asked whether we could camp in the forest overnight
But it turns out Alex doesn’t like sleeping in the forest
he and his friends kept being woken by “a very loud hoof noise
like a horse or a particularly large deer”
Every time they would stick their head out from the tent to investigate
he slept in a hammock to get closer to whatever was causing the sound
His visit was cut short when a bat smashed into his face
We point our flashlights at misshapen trees – many here grow in zig-zag patterns or in spirals
a phenomenon which has not been plausibly explained by any of the scientists who have come to investigate
every single tree that spirals does so in a clockwise direction
I ask Alex the creepiest thing that has happened to him on the tours
He’d just got a massive tattoo of a demon on his chest
“But the scariest thing happened to my colleague
with a very morbid man who talked about his obsession with death
how he enjoyed being with people as they die
where 20 million people watched a documentary about ghost-hunting in Hoia Bacu in 2015
when they were contemplating starting a business taking tourists to the forest
‘Even locals are too scared to come to the forest
foreigners will think you are going to take them to a dark
creepy place then rip out their kidneys.’”
Perhaps this is the portal to another dimension
and Alex tells us to make a wish – some locals believe the “energy” of the forest can be used for good
And now we emerge to see the skyline of Cluj-Napoca
either – only a strange sense of fatigue experienced by another woman on the tour
I remember Alex’s words before we set off: “The forest is only haunted if you bring your own ghosts.”
Reach Cluj entirely by train: the Eurostar runs from London-Paris; change for a Paris-Munich service
you can catch a sleeper train to Budapest and take an onward service to Cluj Napoca
Wizz Air flies from London Luton to Cluj-Napoca
Pension Déjà Vu has rooms from €40 per night
Night-time tours of the forest with Alex Surducan cost £25
The pick-up point is in central Cluj-Napoca

Young people that are driven and have a great work ethic are some of my favorite people to meet and talk to
but the things that they accomplish are usually pretty amazing as well
As one of the winners of this year’s SEMA Young Guns competition
he has taken a stock 2006 Wrangler Sport and transformed it into a rig worthy of admiration
Even better is the fact that he has done it all on a college student’s budget
Alex Baciu with his 2006 Jeep Wrangler Sport
Alex is a professional driver when not in class at Eastern Michigan University
where he is studying to be a mechanical engineer
He initially started the project with the intention of doing an 8.8-inch axle swap in the rear but
it snowballed into one-ton axles and stretching the wheelbase to accommodate a coilover suspension
“I figured that if I wanted to go this far
Attention to detail and lots of personal touches really add to this build
From that point on, the decision was made to take the Wrangler down to the frame and start fresh. The frame was sanded down and all of the stock mounting locations and brackets were removed and sanded smooth. From there, Alex used a Rock Krawler long arm upgrade kit to suspend the front newer style Dana 60 from a Ford super-duty
a trussed GM 14-bolt was shaved and stuffed underneath
“We used high-clearance control arms and we saw immediately that they were going to hit the frame
So we decided that we would notch the frame for them to tuck into it
That allowed us to get more up-travel and keep the Jeep lower so it doesn’t have to be a monster truck.” The front of the Jeep has been stretched three inches and the rear has had six inches added to accommodate the new axles and give the rig the stance and look that Alex prefers
Fox shocks with remote reservoirs and fourteen inches of travel up front handle dampening duties while the same brand and diameter shocks with sixteen inches of travel got the nod for the rear. 40-inch Toyo mud terrain tires on beadlocks make sure there is plenty of grip going to the ground
a selectable rear locker was in the works at the time of this article
A Poison Spyder front cage and a custom DOM tube cage for the rear were also being finished up at the same time
Alex had the entire tub off of the Jeep for welding
A rear cargo area for recovery gear and other storage items should be complete by the time this story is published
which give the Wrangler fourteen inches of front travel and sixteen in the rear
The interior of the Jeep received custom-made seats and four-point harnesses for if things get topsy-turvy. On the engine side, the original 4.0-liter motor remains, but with the addition of a full Mishimoto cooling system, full PSC hydro-assist steering system
Discussion continues between Alex and his girlfriend Ari regarding what to do with the motor for the Jeep moving forward
Potential ideas have included making the current motor a stroker motor
Alex is currently shying away from a possible LS build as he admitted feeling that “everyone does an LS
The interior of the Jeep received custom-made seats and four-point harnesses by Topless Interiors
You may have noticed by now that Alex describes all progress and decisions with the Jeep as being decided not just by himself
but also with his girlfriend Ari providing input
That’s because the two of them got together when the build started and they have worked on it together every step of the way
“I’ve always had an interest in working on things
I would be the one in the garage with my dad handing him tools
and I would always be asking him how one thing worked with another
not just what he was doing.” When Alex and Ari first met
Alex was rebuilding the Jeeps’ transfer case and Ari just jumped right in
“It was only like the second time that she had ever come over
and she asked me what I was doing and then was handing me tools and helping and I just thought
Alex and his girlfriend Ari have spent the past two years modifying the Jeep together
I just love the way it pushes down on the tire
but something like that is just cool from an engineering standpoint.”
Alex is a big fan of the Currie Antirock bar
Up next for this crew is a trip to the 2018 SEMA show and some additional travels
In addition to creating a cool rig Alex also took third place in the 2018 battle of the builders young guns
He took that third place finish as well as the feedback provided by the judges and made some improvements
He then took first place at the four wheel Jamboree in Indianapolis and that earned them the trip to the SEMA show
After putting so much work into the Jeep both Alex and Ari agree that it’s time to enjoy it for a while
“I’ve always wanted to travel and this is just another way to do that
I have my own Jeep and we’ll do a build on that too but right now we just want to enjoy this one for a while”
“this coming year we just want to recoup all that build time and take it places
From our perspective they have certainly earned it and it will be awesome to see what great things these two do in the future

Baciu is a two-time NAU alumna who earned a master’s in educational leadership in 2019 and a doctorate if educational leadership in 2022
She currently works as a research program manager at Arizona State University
She is the co-founder and co-director of the Arizona Cancer Evolution Center (ACE) Scholars Program and the Cooperation Scholars Program
and the intersections between technology and higher education
she served as a representative of the College of Education in the Graduate Student Government and was a working group member of the Impactful Research
and Creative Activities team for the Strategic Roadmap Initiative with the Office of the President
walked across the graduation stage in December
I graduated with a doctorate in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University
where I’ve earned both my master’s and doctorate degrees online
Having experienced online education for my entire graduate education career
I know firsthand how important mentoring is for online students
and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned
With a full-time job and a family to manage
I enthusiastically seized the opportunity to earn my degrees online from NAU
I was fortunate to form meaningful relationships with staff and faculty and pursue multiple opportunities that have enriched my educational experiences
I never once felt like an outsider or like my experience was somehow lessened because I wasn’t attending classes on campus
I would argue that my experience as an online student has been richer in many ways
mostly due to the support and community I found in student organizations and by interacting with staff and faculty across the university in various capacities
Online learning has been such a rich experience for me because of the faculty mentorship I sought and received along the way
My mentors were crucial in helping me reach my academic goals and stay on track throughout my degree programs
whether it be by providing feedback on papers
lending a listening ear or offering advice on academic topics and beyond
and I know that I would not be where I am today without their help
through my research and personal experience
I’ve learned that there are several reasons why mentoring is so important for online students
One of the benefits of mentoring is that it provides individualized support based on the mentee’s needs and goals
you have someone who is invested in your success and who can provide you with tailored advice and guidance
This is especially important for online students
who may not have the same opportunities to interact with professors and peers on a regular basis
Whether you’re struggling with a particular class or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of your program
your mentor can provide you with the support you need to get through it
It is highly unlikely that a mentor has all the answers
but she or he can actively listen and connect you with the resources you may need to succeed
A mentor will often serve as a sounding board
someone you can run ideas by and who can help you see and find various approaches
Mentors can help you navigate the job market and connect with potential employers
If you’re looking for advice on your post-graduate plans or tips on how to network effectively
a mentor can share information about various opportunities
They might even introduce you to their network
providing you with further social and professional connections
The most effective mentoring relationships thrive in an environment where both the mentor and the mentee have focused on creating a safe space for non-judgmental
open and transparent conversations and brainstorms to happen
online students appreciate being supported both in the psychological and emotional domain and the academic and career one
Mentoring is beneficial to all students but perhaps even more so to online and non-traditional students who might have to work harder to navigate the hidden curriculum in higher education (aka the things you don’t even know you don’t know)
As someone who has benefitted from mentoring relationships throughout my academic career
I strongly believe in the power of mentoring to help individuals achieve their goals while pursuing an online education
If you’re feeling lost or unsure about how to achieve success in your online program
reach out to someone who can offer guidance and support
You may just find yourself surprised by how helpful they can be

Green said she eventually found out that Baciu told his friends he would marry her one day after they met for the first time
"I thought that was funny because at first
I saw him as one of my little sister's friends that had a crush on me," she said.
Baciu kept coming up with excuses to come around
It wasn't until Green found out that Baciu went on a date with someone else that she realized she had feelings for him
The two started officially dating on March 3
The local winery hosted an event where visitors could bottle up their own wine
She had no idea that he had planned the proposal specifically during that weekend because he knew it was an event she would want to attend
Baciu had coordinated with Green's little sister to have the bridge at the winery decorated with flower petals
and for music to start playing the moment they walked onto it
"I don't even remember what he said because I was so shocked," she said.
Green's little sister popped out from the bushes after flying in from Boston for the proposal.
the couple headed to a local wine bar to celebrate
Baciu surprised Green again with 30 of their closest friends and family
I didn't think so many people would be coming out of town to celebrate with us."
Green told Insider that she wasn't planning on doing an engagement photo shoot because it wasn't in her budget
But then her cousin offered to take photos for free.
Although that specific 7-Eleven closed in 2021
Green and Baciu loved the idea of doing "something a little fun
And having the shoot at 7-Eleven wasn't the only sentimental part of the day
Green also decided to pay tribute to her mom by wearing her wedding dress.
"I thought it was just a fun way to be the favorite daughter
The mermaid-style gown was designed with puffy sleeves and intricate beading all over
Green said her mom bought the dress for about $300 and only had the dangling beads on the sleeves added as a fun detail.
"I remember growing up thinking my mom looked like the most beautiful woman in the world in her wedding dress," Green said.
Green's dad wore his suit with a black bolo tie and a rose to match his wife's bouquet.
Green wore her mom's wedding dress with the same pearl jewelry she wore on her wedding day
She paired the look with white boots she bought at TJ Maxx
Baciu wore his brown tuxedo with the same bolo tie Green's father wore in 1993
"It felt so cool and sentimental to give my mom that moment," Green said of wearing her mom's dress
"We look like a younger version of my parents
and that's what we were trying to do."
Green said her mom cried when she saw the pictures from the photo shoot for the first time
It was even more special because none of her other sisters wore the dress for their weddings.
"I think it was very surreal for her because the dress fit me perfectly
"I was really honored to give my mom that moment
Green said arriving at the 7-Eleven in their photo-shoot looks made her believe in humanity again because everyone was so nice.
but everyone had such great energy," she said
"The vibe was there and everyone was so kind
The 27-year-old bride-to-be posted a TikTok video of the photos on March 11. The video has over 1 million views at the time of writing.
Green said that having the TikTok go viral has made her wedding-planning process even more fun.
"It was such a special moment for me, so for it to resonate with so many other people is amazing," she added. "It's been really fun to see other people excited for us too."

but the forest of Hoia Bacui and nearby Cluj-Napoca
the famed belt of old-growth forest often referred to as the Bermuda Triangle of Romania
With local guide Alex Surducan leading the way
we set off from the Someșul Mic river for a morning ramble to see where our journey might lead
riding and camping tours in this fold of the Carpathian foothills
and few know the 55,000-year-old forest better than him
Deer crack twigs underfoot in the shadows and I spy a steppe eagle arcing overhead through a gap in the canopy
a shy brown bear might walk across our path
primordial beauty in every nook of this 700-acre
and sometimes even I half expect a bogeyman to jump out from behind a tree.”
But far fewer people have even heard of Cluj-Napoca
Alex’s sceptical take is that we have become so disconnected with nature
so uncomfortable spending time in the woodsWe move haltingly
stopping to study the woodland: verges of gypsy mushrooms waiting to be picked
trees bent crooked into zigzags and skeletal branches twisted like braids of rope
The unexpected element in this scene is that Hoia Baciu has an eerie touch
Farmers in the valley swear the forest is haunted
citing a tale of a shepherd who disappeared with more than 200 of his flock
Another story tells of a five-year-old girl who got lost
only to reappear five years later with no recollection of where she had been
among them professors at the city’s Babeș-Bolyai University
claim the woodland is a home to inexplicable paranormal activity
After years of trying to make sense of it all
so uncomfortable spending time in the woods
that we give in to coincidence and let our imaginations trick us
Maybe it’s the silence that makes me feel uneasy
but by the time we retrace our steps to the trailhead
The light has begun to fade when we arrive back in Cluj-Napoca

I’m always on the lookout for documentaries that explore the strange and unusual

Filmmaker Paul Dadrian, with a little help from his Indiegogo campaign
wants to explore a mystery set within the heart of Transylvania
Once he has enough money to cover expenses
Dadrian will piece together a very intriguing documentary entitled Hoia-Baciu Forest: Beyond the Legend
Judging from the synopsis on the film’s campaign page

with a quarter of employees already working from home
so the crisis didnot change to many things
The ecosystem allowed to switch very easy to work-from-home
Vice President Global talent at UiPath said at Business Review’s Working Romania event
”We also had a heads up from colleagues in China so we mobilized to prepare for the crisis from a very early stage
They work day and night and are so responsible that we have to launch challenges like “no more meetings Friday,” said Baciu
In terms of customer support, UiPath offers over 400 case studies in the site that help companies better understand what needs to be done during this period. ” We also have courses through UiPath Academy, a free platform through which anyone can learn how to build their own software robot using RPA technology. We already have 550,000 students and 40,000 certified professionals on the platform,” says Baciu.
”What we do today: in our company the community was guided by the HR department
but many initiatives and projects came from the employees
Yoga or meditation sessions shared with colleagues
the most important change is the change in employees priorities and how they work
”If until the crisis work-from-home was a benefit that many companies offered
we should look at the time dedicated to working
I think the norm of 5 working days a week will no longer be relevant and we will see people who say they want to work only 3 or 4 days a week
And the human resources department as well as the entire community will have to build an ecosystem that integrates the new conditions,” says Andreea Baciu
Work-from-home will be the norm as many companies from the service and tech industry will adopt it. Hubs like Mindspace will be the main place where people gather, while big investments for offices or big buildings will be postponed or stopped.
The strategic planning cycle will also change
”If in the past we had planning for 3-5 years
the implementation cycle will be at most quarterly
We will think in quarters rather than the years
It is also a shift between what will happen globally and what will be done locally
We will look and buy more at what is done locally and less at what comes from outside,” says Baciu
Another change for companies will be the change of focus from higher and higher numbers in revenue and profit to sustainable figures that will allow them to survive for a very long time.

FLETCHER -- Clemson basketball coach Oliver Purnell has had one overriding goal in his tenure -- build the Tigers into a team that can play with the Atlantic Coast Conference elite
Thursday he picked up a player that may put Clemson in position to crash the ACC party in the future
Veritas Christian Academy's standout junior Catalin Baciu verbally committed to the Tigers during a press conference in the drama room at the school
"My name is Catalin Baciu and I am going to play for the Clemson Tigers," the 7-1
230-pound center said to a burst of cheers from the collection of media members
Baciu expounded on his reasons for choosing Clemson
Clemson also picked up a commitment from senior guard Jonah Baize who has accepted a walk-on position
"Every since I was a little kid it's been my dream to play for a school in a conference of this magnitude," he said
"Having someone like Catalin to join me there is invaluable."
led Veritas to the National Association of Christian Athletes Division I National Championship game this past season
13 rebounds and four blocks per game during his junior campaign
When asked what he can bring to the table for the Tigers
"I will do the best I can to help them as much as I can
I have a pretty good hook shot," he said with a smile
has a soft touch in the midrange game and is a deft passer
He is considered by many experts to be the second best player from North Carolina in the class of '08 behind Wake Forest bound Ty Walker
"BoBo is a program changer," Veritas coach John Jordan said
he is the kind of guy who can take Clemson into the upper echelon of the ACC
"You just don't find seven-footers who do the things that BoBo does."
turned down several Division II scholarship offers to play for Clemson
190-pound guard averaged 12 points per game and seven rebounds during his senior campaign
Also honored at the press conference was 6-8 forward Paulius Skema
Skema became the first Veritas athlete to sign an NCAA Division I scholarship when he signed with New Jersey Institute of Technology in November
Baciu and Baize had a message for Clemson fans
Baciu also had a message for the North Carolina Tar Heels
Purnell will speak at Veritas' Winter/Spring athletic banquet Tuesday at Taylor Ranch in Fletcher

It’s likely you’ve been able to have a few peeks inside the demolished 1920s movie palace since March (that’s not including the Art Deco lobby, which is being kept of course) but we haven’t been able to take a good look around the site from the inside…until now that is
Photographer Meghan Baciu has posted some photos taken inside the former Boyd Theatre to her Instagram account, which, let’s be honest here, is the perfect vicarious excursion into a neat place that will (soon?) be replaced by more apartments and retail
So join us on this second-hand urbex trip and be thankful you didn’t suffer any bug bites as Baciu

Steaua Bucuresti was one of the Widzew Łódź's rival in the group along with Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund
who became Steaua's player just before the beginning of 96-97 season
got a chance to show his skills to European audience
The official page of RTS Widzew Łódź proudly presents the interview in which the Romanian player reveals his memories about that time followed by opinions on recent situation of football in his country
Bartosz Koczorowicz: It has been almost 20 years since Widzew Łódź and Steaua Bucuresti played together in UEFA Champions League group stage
Throughout all those years you were representing several football clubs from different countries
but with the end of season 2014-2015 you have stepped down as the coach of Concordia Chiajna
Marius Baciu: I am working on a new project at the moment
I am also in talks with few clubs from abroad
I can say that I am open to receiving offers from Poland as well
I don't want to reveal much before I sign the agreement
Speaking about the beginning of your career - as a youth player of Gaz Metan Medias it would be natural to start the professional career in a mother club
your first match as a senior player took place in the 1992-1993 season in Inter Sibiu - the local opponent's team
- At that time Inter was playing in the top division in Romania (Liga I)
That match you have mentioned was in fact the only one in that season
I was only 17 years old when I made a debut in the highest level in my country
but after couple years the club started having financial problems which led to relegation followed by closure another years later
Inter was relegated in the 1995-1996 season
you became their player in the next season
That must have been a significant change for such a young player like you: from fighting against relegation to competing for trophies and having an opportunity to show oneself in Europe
- Steaua was mainly interested in young and talented players and I was already playing for the Romanian U-21 national team
Probably that was the reason why I became a Steaua player
but because of the already mentioned financial problems in this club I have decided to accept the offer I was given
but no one created any problems with my transfer
Did you feel any pressure because of this situation
The expectations have grown much in a very short period of time
especially because I was already playing on the international level as a youth
After the first match against Club Brugge I have managed to become the first-squad player
I have spent six years in Steaua and for the whole time I missed less than 10 matches because of sitting on the bench or being injured
What I also remember is that I was suspended while Steaua was playing the away match against Widzew in Champions League
On the road to the UEFA Champions League group stage
Did you want to meet specific teams before the draw of the groups took place
All the teams at this phase of the tournament were strong
Many players had left Steaua before the beginning of the season
This was a chance for such young players like me at that time as they replaced the leavers in the squad
Atletico Madrid was the greatest favourite of the group in our eyes
facing any team in Champions League was a challenge for us
we said to each other that we had nothing to lose
We did know much about Widzew to be honest
from the very beginning we were treating all the teams in this group equally
The beginning of the group stage phase was very unlucky for you
In 28th minute of the match against Atletico in Madrid you got the red card
Steaua lost 0-4 becoming the last team in the group after the first round
- But those were the best 28 minutes I have ever played for Steaua
After this match I received an offer from Fabio Capello (Real Madrid’s coach in 96-97 – ed
After my booking we were too weak to effectively defend the goal with ten players
you also had to miss the next match which was the home battle against Borussia Dortmund
your team conceded nine goals (four against Atletico
three against Borussia and two against Widzew)
That is more than a half of all the goals lost by Steaua in the whole group stage
My reputation was getting higher and higher
Romanian press noticed that too and they were writing articles about it
Borussia Dortmund was still too strong for Steaua at that time
You must have regretted that matches where you had to sit on stand and watch your colleagues
You had no influence on the score while the team needed you
I wanted to play against the champion of Germany very much
Borussia had a fantastic squad consisting of players who had clinched the European Championship title couple months before
That would have been a great opportunity to show myself against such a team
The first full match in Champions League group stage played by you was the one against Widzew Łódź in Bucuresti
delegated a team with almost no substitute players on the bench
The main objective for Widzew was to survive without injuries
- I remember that despite their problems it was as a very ambitious and aggressive team
The match in Bucuresti was very difficult for us and suddenly one situation couple minutes before the last whistle and the ball was in the net because of one Widzew defender who scored an own goal
you also missed a match in Łódź because of the yellow card in Bucuresti
I started receiving more and more interesting offers from different countries – Spain
I was a very young player who just entered the new team
Steaua did not want to let me go anywhere at that time
Speaking about the Champions League group stage finish
your last match in Dortmund was a classic exchange of punches
Borussia won 5-3 and you have scored one of the goals for Steaua
- We already knew that we would not qualify further
our attitude was that we would like to end this adventure with a good performance
It was easier to take such an approach at that moment as we had absolutely nothing to lose
Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament
Which of those two teams was less comfortable to play with and why
They were representing two different styles
but as a team they were not as strong as Borussia Dortmund
my opinion is that BVB was also better than their country rival - Bayern Munich
How does it look when we talk about individual players only
Which player was the toughest to play against
if you had to choose only one from this group
- This is even a more difficult question than the previous one
as there were many fantastic players in the opponent teams
Do you know what is going on with Widzew Łódź right now
I must admit that I was not following what was happening in Widzew
but I remember that the club had financial problems in the past
this team deserves respect no matter the situation
Due to financial problems Widzew had to start again from the 5th division
One year ago the new entity reactivated the club
Right now Widzew plays on the 4th level in Poland
This scenario sounds similar to some Romanian clubs which some time ago were on the top of domestic league playing in European cups and now have to start from scratch
The examples are Otelul Galati and Unirea Urziceni
Why some clubs end up so drastically couple years after they had played against the strongest European teams
Is there any common root for all those cases
- If I had managed such a club I would have been doing my best in order to double the income the club would receive
The reason why all the clubs mentioned by you went down is because they were not being run by people from football environment
They were representing all other types of business but not sport
I remember many strange things happening in all fallen Romanian clubs
What does “strange things” mean in this context
the owner of Unirea Urziceni invested a lot of money before entering the club and later on he invested another tranche of money into real estate market
When the economic crisis came to Europe he could not have helped the club as his money was everywhere else
Since that moment Unirea started to swoop down
It is no wonder that in such a case he primarily wanted to save his own businesses completely forgetting about the team he had
The year after Unirea played in Champions League they did not manage to win anything in Romania
which I can call a professional one in terms of management
because they understand that in order to have results you need to invest first
All good players are interested to go there
Nobody can go back in time to correct the mistakes
what would be your advice for people who decided to take part in reactivation of those clubs
They usually invest at the first stage of their activity within the club
this will never guarantee good results in short term
it is impossible to create a great team overnight
You need to be patient and have the right people in management board
managers prefer to save the business and sell a player rather than wait or invest money in the team
Football on the level which was achieved by Widzew or Otelul is a great business
The problem is that sometimes money goes in different places
You have previously mentioned the cases in which the owners were not entirely focused on running their clubs
- Some of them also think only about themselves by making more money and with the time passing by they eventually drop their interest in football as they cannot be concentrated on two things at once
previously were playing in lower divisions and after that they reached the top in the country
At the beginning of the road they were looking well-organised
They seemed to understand that everything can be achieved by small steps
the situation was becoming worse and finally it was getting out of control
The money earned in football was being spent on totally different things
clubs that remember their past in lower leagues try to immediately take opportunity from that situation by selling players
Usually this ends up with poor performance in the next season which leads to stagnation.
it should invest around 30-35 per cent in the team in order to introduce fresh blood
I do not agree with the politics of selling out almost the whole team
It is good to sell maximally one or two players a year and replace them with someone who is looking for challenges
the key is to find people who know and care about football
Another problem is infrastructure in Romania
There is a plenty of work to be done in the area of youth training in terms of bases
This problem also relates to youth coaches who are underpaid
- I liked Poland’s play during the EURO 2016 very much
Based on that I can say that is one of the strongest teams in our group
Romania can cause many problems toward others
but it’s Poland who has higher quality right now
What was the reason why such a balanced team in terms of all formations like Romania took the last place in the group with France
After a tough match against hosts and a draw against the team being coached by Petković hardly anyone expected a loss with the biggest underdog of this tournament
- The team looked as if they were not at all inspired by the coach
he had an almost 10 year gap in his coaching career
The mission he decided to take on was too big for him
At least two or three great players stayed in Romania
We do not have fabulous players in our teams
but I believe that this team could have been selected and organized better
the value of the team was not the highest one and the effects were expectable
The results we achieved on the EURO 2016 fully reflect the situation in Romanian football
Are there perspectives for an improvement in this situation
- We cannot have big expectations from our national team
when our clubs are organized in such a way as they are recently
We have a lot of teams that suffer costs of youth development
Without help coming from families of children being trained this would be even harder to run
Our country as a state does not recognize football as the top priority domain
People who can potentially invest in football are afraid because of series of arrests that occurred over the past years
where politics is strongly involved in sport
Every country should treat sport as one of the top priorities
I guess the comparison with France is not accidental
After years spent in Steaua you became the player of Lille OSC in 2002 and spent two seasons there
How big change was it for you from time perspective
- Like every player from Eastern Europe at that time
I had played many years for Steaua and eventually there was an opportunity for me to change the club for the Western one
but I was mostly interested in playing in stronger league
I was also in talks with German and Italian clubs
as they gave me the best and most concrete offer
Claude Puel (with whom I still have a good contact)
the club did not hesitate to give me a contract
Under his influence I have also decided not to leave football and continue my journey as a coach as well
Have you ever regretted any decision throughout your whole career
Those are hard words to say because I am emotionally related with this club
but from time perspective I have realized how big club sent an offer to me
who gave a firm answer that I am staying in Bucuresti
I remember he said he was not going to make a person traffic
That was his expression because I had become a Steaua player three months before that situation happened
but instead it was Daniel Prodan (signed a contract with Atletico Madrid – ed
note) and Iulian Filipescu (became the player of Galatasaray S.K
note) who got an acceptance to leave the club
so this was enough for Steaua in that season
Even though Lille OSC was not listed among the clubs fighting for trophies in France
it consisted of already great players in the team like Eric Abidal and promising talents as Mathieu Debuchy or Yohan Cabaye
We were complementing each other very well on the pitch
It was a great comfort to have such a player next to me
in 2004 he was just a kid who had already entered his professional career
He was not getting many chances but rather training with the first team in order to gain some experience
with whom I also played a little before he went to Arsenal
Was Eric Abidal the best player you have ever had a chance to play with in the defense
but I would not be fair with the answer if I had not mentioned “Didi” Prodan as well
While I was playing in Steaua having Daniel next to me
I was receiving the biggest amount of good offers
He and Eric were my best cooperators in my whole career
- “Didi” is my friend and we are talking with each other quite frequently
it seems he changed his phone number once he moved out from Spain so I lost the contact for now
It might be a problem to restore it as I do not have a Facebook profile
NESTLED between two mountain ranges in Transylvania is a forest locals have long refused to enter for fear of what lies within
Now, a tour company is venturing into the Hoia-Baciu Forest, where UFOs, strange shadows, and other supernatural phenomena occur
Legend says the area was named after a shepherd
who supposedly entered the "world's most haunted forest" with a flock of 200 sheep - only to never be seen again
Marius Lazin is the President of the Hoia-Baciu Project
an organisation first formed to prevent the forest from being destroyed
the Hoia-Baciu Forest was shrouded in a rich tapestry of stories and rumours that kindled fascination
"These tales often revolved around eerie occurrences
and the uncanny energy that permeated the woods."
Five years later, she is said to have reemerged unaged, wearing the same dress she vanished in and unable to remember where she'd been.
Many locals and visitors have claimed to see ghostly apparitions of soldiers who died in battles that took place nearby.
Hauntingly, no vegetation grows in a circular section of the forest - and this is where much of the paranormal activity is documented.
Lazin explained that part of the forest's mystique is linked to its proximity to an archaeological site
with 10 bodies discovered that date back to 6500 BC
Tour guides with the Hoia-Baciu Project have witnessed many events that defy logic while hosting tours to the forest
The woods first gained infamy for extraterrestrial life after biologist Alexandra Sift took several photos of what appeared to be a UFO flying above the trees in 1960
Email Barnea, a military technician, took further photos of a flying saucer over the treeline in 1968 - and the tales took off from there
Investigators quickly tried to debunk Barnea's photo, but no weather balloons
or other things were found to be in the sky that day
His photo negatives were also examined to see if they were altered - but no evidence of tampering was found
many still opt to venture into the forest with the help of the Hoia-Baciu Project tour guides
Lazin told how many guides have witnessed unexplained events while in the forest - ranging from electronic device malfunctions to creepy voices
He said: "Participants have recounted whispers that seem to emanate from the very fabric of the forest

“A coherent smart city approach must put the citizen in the center of attention
The ability of the authorities to understand the needs of citizens is very important
We are in a complicated context that has accelerated the growth of digitalization
All this digitization contributes to a massive increase in the amount of data,” Stefan Baciu
Moldova said during the Smart Transformation Forum organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest
“Our vision is to transform a world that offers a huge amount of data into an intelligent world,” he explained
“We have projects in the area of smart energy
smart transportation – traffic monitoring
We are very interested in increasing the level of preparation of existing resources in these areas of AI and advanced decision support systems
One approach I want to implement in the next period is to create centers of excellence for advanced analytics that manage various challenges
In Romania there are many people well trained in terms of technology
The future will lead us to a more advanced use of technologies.”
Predictive maintenance becomes very important for most companies in the energy industry
“Companies want to anticipate equipment failures
they want to plan stocks and intervention works so that energy delivery continues and customers are happy.”
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION CONFERENCE in ENERGY & UTILITIES organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest on May 7th tackled the ways in which digitalization and innovation drive the emergence of a digital utilities business
integrate and get updated with the new technologies is evident for any organization
smart metering are not anymore new concepts but daily working tools and the enablers of digital transformation for utilities
The e-conference benefited from the support of Gold Partners Siemens
ANIS (the Employers’ Association of the Software and Services in Romania)
ACUE (Federation of Associations of Energy Utility Companies)
AFEER (Association of traders with electricity in Romania)
ARPEE (Romanian Association for the Promotion of Energy)
experts and the most knowns specialists in the strategic industries
to discuss the most pressing aspects in today’s economy landscape
“There are a series of approaches related to the ability to understand very quickly and very simply the desires of the customers
to understand customer needs is given by the possibility to analyse a lot of data related to customer interaction with various banking products or various vendors
to understand proactively and to anticipate the needs of these customers
The more banks that have enormous volumes of data can extract this data
the more the ability to attract and retain customers grows
It’s clearly a massive opportunity in this segment
in creating certain products that fit the needs of this segment
plus the need to get out of a certain paradigm because
a certain area is susceptible to a higher risk of lending
Automatically the loan office in that area will decrease
And automatically that’s going to lead to the development of a trend in this area
new elements should be found to bring in these models
which can remove certain areas or certain segments from this continuum,” Stefan Baciu
Moldova said during Financial Forum 2022 organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest
“The area of anti-fraud and anti-money laundry are very well regulated and can represent a kind of bottlenecks in the context of accelerated digitalization and the need to interact as quickly as possible with banking products
But it can also be an opportunity to have a safe environment
to have customers who are of a certain quality and to eliminate these bottlenecks by using technologies that can make this process very easy
And I have even noticed lately an increase in the interest of companies in this industry in this area of anti-money laundry and anti-fraud because with the digitalization and intensification of transactions on multiple channels you need to be able to monitor these channels and take actions proactively
Working in the hybrid system and all this period of covid and remote work has accelerated digitalization
from optimizing internal processes to easy interaction with customers
The fact is that many bottlenecks have to be solved
Some of them are more difficult to implement
others can be addressed through technologies that exist and that we make available
technologies related to customer creditworthiness analysis
the use of machine learning technologies and artificial intelligence that detect anomalies in very large volumes of data
the problem of human resources and here we help and come up with master’s degree programs to train specialists in the data science area
beyond these technologies that are increasingly in demand and are more and more accepted on the local market
the necessary resources to understand them and to develop them continuously
we come with a very vast experience from all over the world and we are talking about real projects and use-cases that really give results
Banks are increasingly going to convenience
they want to be able to have an absolutely coherent message on all channels of engagement with customers
to be compliant with anti-money laundry rules and all this to happen very easily and quickly in interacting with customers
The good news is that these things are possible
there are concrete examples in this direction
but there is a need for a greater focus on these directions in order to be able to reach that potential of the market
with which we all agree that it exists in our market
The earlier we start and lay the foundation for know-how in this digital area
the better and more than that we also open the appetite for more advanced things
At the moment we are focusing on this area of universities and the post-graduate environment because we noticed that the appetite is very high and the demand in the market is very high
there is a deficit in this area of data science
of specialists in advanced data analysis and the data shows us that the world is going in this direction
It’s clear that the volume of data is growing exponentially and to what extent you manage to understand and put that data to work
to get the information actionable and intelligent
the more so the level of profitability increases
We partner with Babes-Bolyai University and we are working on initiatives with other universities to increase the number of data scientists
It’s a good moment that we must continue
We are famous anyway for burning the stages as people and I think that if we have the curiosity to understand
certain use-cases from other areas of the world
in conjunction with this capacity to burn the stages
we can have some exponential growth in this area of digitalization
with benefits for both customers and organizations.”

“The ENGIE Group has experience in the development of charging stations in Western Europe and brings this expertise to Romania as well
We have partnerships with manufacturers such as Mercedes and Mazda and we offer charging stations to customers who purchase electric cars
Statistical data show that 70 percent of the charging sessions are carried out at home and will be carried out at home in the future
even if the development rate of the public infrastructure will increase,” Octav Baciu
ENGIE Romania said during Green Mobility Forum organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest
“We have software solutions for the management of charging stations
and we are preparing new projects regarding green mobility
The private sector and public authorities must collaborate for the development of this sector
which offers great opportunities for Romania
ENGIE develops green energy production capacities
and we are very concerned about this topic
The ENGIE Group aims to become net zero in all activities by 2045
In Romania we have wind farms and photovoltaic parks
and we make sure that the energy we supply is green
and one of the conclusions was that Romanians are very willing to contract green electricity
but when they were asked if they were willing to pay a premium
We carry out campaigns to educate and inform the public
and we are interested in these things happening not only on paper
We make efforts to guarantee that the electrical energy we offer to our clients is green to the greatest extent possible.”
Asset analytics means fewer failures and less downtime – planned and unplanned – across sites and assets
“It provides better equipment efficiency and higher overall quality
And the ability to accurately predict outages before they occur
while running assets at peak performance,” he said
satisfying customer interaction across channels
top-rated protection against revenue losses
And cost-effective management of customer outreach programs
Credit and collection optimization minimizes bad debts and increases cash flow.”
The statement has been uttered within the recently held e-conference DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION CONFERENCE in ENERGY & UTILITIES organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest
bringing together leaders spearheading digital initiatives in their organizations

Suspended: Dr Silvia Baciu at the General Medical Council
A doctor who described her Asian colleagues as ‘orang-utans’ has been suspended by the General Medical Council
made the comments after claiming she had been subjected to insulting and threatening treatment because she was a white European
But the NHS Trust she worked for accused her of racism and the GMC yesterday criticised her ‘unacceptable racial behaviour’
worked as a Senior House Officer in anaesthetics at Basildon Hospital
she reuested a meeting with the Trust to discuss alleged
discrimination at the hands of her colleagues
She prepared a 12-page document to support her claims
The GMC heard that she had written: ‘It’s not my fault that in the heads of senior Asian colleagues
there’s no difference between an educated white woman and a donkey
It’s not my fault that I was born in Europe and not
that ( some doctors) are exempt from known immigration laws
‘The brainy Asian males of this department can’t place themselves before the law.’
added in the document that she feared that European science
would ‘disappear’ because there were so many Asian doctors
She added: ‘The orang-utan section of the department is ready for action and I assure you of their effectiveness.’
Dr Baciu claimed she had been threatened and harassed and found attitudes towards her ‘very hard to endure’
The GMC was told that Dr Baciu had problems adjusting to working in the UK
also said there were concerns over her communication skills and her ability to complete written assessments
Dr Baciu said that the word ‘orang-utan’ did not refer to the doctors’ appearance
but their aggressive and threatening behaviour
But Mr Ferguson said: ‘Any reference to members of an ethnic group who differ from the dominant group in the UK because of the colour of their skin is racist
and any suggestion to the contrary is unsustainable
'That this could be considered as anything other than racist is a nonsense.’
Suspending Dr Baciu for six months Ralph Bergman
said: ‘The period of suspension will enable you to reflect on your unacceptable conduct
to take steps to become more aware of the unacceptability of racial behaviour and to satisfy a future panel that you have gained the necessary degree of insight.’
Mr Bergman added that Dr Baciu’s decision not to give evidence herself was concerning
The GMC recommended that she attend a training course in diversity before her case is reviewed later this year

It turns out that Romania is famous for more than being the home of Count Dracula
With its eerie history in mind, several horror movies have been filmed in Romania. Some of these include The Nun, Netflix's The Ritual
But there's one part of the country that not many people are brave enough to venture in for brief periods of time
never mind for long enough to shoot a whole film - and that's The Hoia Baciu forest
The infamous forest is located in Transylvania
and there's a lot of lore about it and what has happened there
Hoia Baciu is believed to be haunted and has been for hundreds of years
With the amount of disappearances that have reportedly occurred in the forest
it's often dubbed the 'Bermuda Triangle of Romania'
there's a story about a young girl who went missing in the forest
only to resurface years later in the exact same state she went missing in
There's also a tale of a shepherd who went into the forest with 200 sheep and was never to be seen again
While some people never allegedly make it out of Hoia Baciu
others come out and report experiencing strange symptoms such as nausea
Some have even had physical symptoms like severe rashes, headaches, and even burns, says Earth
Then there's an incident that occurred in 1968 when military technician Emil Barnea took a photo of what he insisted was a UFO
The Communist government at the time didn't hold much space for supposed alien sightings
Many people still question the validity of his claims as Barnea has nothing to gain from lying about what he saw
a Hoia Baciu tour guide named Alex recalled a time someone 'went crazy' while in the forest
"There was a man who went crazy, thinking he’d met a demon," he said to The Independant
"He’d just got a massive tattoo of a demon on his chest
Alex went on to share: "But the scariest thing happened to my colleague
there's a lot of unexplained phenomena that surrounds Hoia Baciu
leading people to believe that the thousand-year-old forest may be haunted
