2025 1:12 PM EDTUniversity of Florida student Talia Baia is beside herself with all the attention she's getting after a short interview with Gators basketball player Bennett Andersen
But she vows to strike while the iron's hot
a student reporter with ESPN Gainesville's WRUF
was simply doing her job last week covering the Gators' Sweet 16 win over Maryland in the NCAA Tournament
given his incredible rise -- from serving as the team's manager for three seasons before making the roster as a walk-on this season
He got a taste for March Madness last week in the waning seconds against Maryland
but he made the most of it with a putback to record his first bucket in NCAA Tournament play
who was sitting in front of his locker with a seemingly doting look in his eyes while staring up at the student reporter
with many chiming in on Baia's interview
"This man is in love lol," one person tweeted
After the interview went viral, Baia reacted by tweeting a collage of headlines her interview made
"This is absolute madness," along with a laughing emoji
Talia Baia and Bennett Andersen's T-shirt sells for $35 (Talia Baia/Instagram)
With her interview still all the rage, it appears Baia is looking to capitalize on her newfound fame. After Florida beat Texas Tech over the weekend to advance to the Final Four, Baia took to Instagram to hawk a T-shirt featuring a cartoon drawing of the viral interview. The cartoon features Andersen with hearts over his eyes.
"Go check out the new shirt Bennett and I dropped!" Baia wrote on her Instagram Story. "Don't be shy, show some love."
Baia and Andersen, who is nicknamed "Buckets," purportedly partnered up to benefit from T-shirt sales.

He then chatted to ESPN's Talia Baiai in the locker room at Chase Center
Andersen could not hide his smile as she congratulated him on his two-pointer which proved crucial in reaching the Elite Eight stage of March Madness - where they beat Texas Tech 84-79
One quipped: "I think a young man fell in love."
Another joked: "He was looking at her like she was the moon and stars."
A fourth typed: "My man found his soul mate."
And a final user confessed: "Bro's better than me, I would've folded."

image: Chart (a) presents the absolute quantity of crops reported from the Baia-În Muchie and Dobrovăț sites
while chart (b) shows the recovery frequency; chart (c) shows the carbonized wheat and broomcorn millet recovered from Baia-În Muchie (left) and Dobrovăț (right); specimens 1 and 7 are wheat
The early trans-Eurasian exchange and its influence on the dynamics of human-land relationships is an emerging topic involving multiple disciplines
The southwestern part of the East European Plain (hereafter the SW East European Plain) served as a key corridor of the Silk Road and entryway to the Eurasian steppes
providing a major route connecting Europe with Central and West Asia
was introduced into the region about 3,600 years ago
significantly earlier than in other parts of Europe
Direct dates of broomcorn millet are primarily from the eastern part of the region
leaving uncertainties about its spread within the area and the timing of the introduction of foxtail millet
To clarify the spatio-temporal processes of the spread of broomcorn and foxtail millet and to detect potential changes in their proportions within crop structures over time
it is therefore necessary to carry out systematic flotation to obtain more direct dates of archaeological millet grains from secure contexts
and TIAN Jie from the School of Art and Archaeology at the Zhejiang University
WEN Chenghao from the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
YANG Meng and HAO Hongxing from the Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology
Gheorghe LAZAROVICI from the Institute of Archaeology Iasi
The researchers systematically analyzed flotation samples from two sites in Romania on the SW East European Plain: Baia-În Muchie (spanning the Chalcolithic to the Iron Age) and Dobrovăț (yielding remains from the Chalcolithic and Iron Age)
In conjunction with AMS radiocarbon dating
the researchers sought to establish a chronological framework for assessing the cultivation patterns of broomcorn and foxtail millet in this region
97 carbonized broomcorn millet grains (Panicum miliaceum) and two carbonized wheat grains (Triticum sp.) were identified
representing 73% of all plant remains uncovered
including broomcorn millet grains (Panicum miliaceum) and wheat (Triticum sp.)
Flotation results from the Baia-În Muchie and Dobrovăț sites indicate that both the absolute quantity and recovery frequency of broomcorn millet
suggest it was equally as significant as wheat
the researchers selected broomcorn millet and wheat samples for AMS radiocarbon dating
yielding 16 AMS dates: 14 for broomcorn millet and two for wheat
the radiocarbon dates were calibrated with OxCal v.4.4.4 software
The earliest broomcorn millet sample dates to 1442-1285 cal BC
while the latest ranges from cal AD 890 to 1020
The two wheat samples are dated to 4336-4226 cal BC and 4333-4224 cal BC
The findings demonstrate that broomcorn millet cultivation in this region has persisted for over 2,000 years
exhibiting significant diachronic fluctuations
Millet was most intensively utilized during the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age (1200–800 BC) and the Late Roman Empire (AD 250–400)
periods which were characterized by rapid climatic changes
It may have been cultivated as a “disaster relief” crop to mitigate the challenges posed by extreme drought and cold
The millet grains from the study area are similar in dimensions to those reported in East Asia; however
grains from the Romanian sites are thinner and longer
The route traversing the Caucasus and the northern Black Sea likely served as a key passage through which millet entered Europe from West Asia
This research provides valuable data on the chronology of millet cultivation in the SW Eastern European Plain and enhances our understanding of early East-West exchanges and their impact on human-environment interactions in critical regions

The insufferable Big J media dinosaurs are at it again
telling the next generation of media members how to handle their business.
Viral Florida basketball student reporter Talia Baia
who just happens to be attractive and went viral during March Madness for being hot
posted a video this week of herself reacting to her university winning the national championship.
It was the type of first-person content that a producer wants to see out of a multimedia journalist these days
Baia put the camera on herself during the last few seconds of Florida's win over Houston.
This is what Baia recorded as Cougars guard Emanuel Sharp pulled up for a shot only to hesitate as Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr
didn't touch it and Baia's school won the national championship.
Did Baia cheer to the point where Big Js should be up in arms
But that didn't stop the insufferables from lecturing the college student on decorum at sporting events.
Some Texas Longhorns dork reporter Josh Newman
was one of at least two Longhorns Big Js to go on the attack
decided to hop into the fray and declare that Baia's actions set "back ppl who want to get into media and be taken seriously."
I've said it many times in my Screencaps columns
having a press pass and having to be around Big Js at a sporting event is a prison sentence
They're some of the most miserable humans on the planet.
Many of them actually hate the sports they cover
They can't wait for sports seasons to end so they can go on vacation
I worked in the Big J world before starting my Internet career
I once thought having a press pass was some badge of privilege.
There comes a point in your life where you finally figure out it's actually a horrible scene filled with fake
suckin' down cold ones at the Indy 500 vs
sitting in that press room — it's literally a massive conference hall where you can barely see any of the track; some seats have no view of the track — was a big lesson to me that my days of worrying about a badge were coming to an end.
I was working under a grounds pass from Verizon that didn't have a no-drinking requirement.
Find a way to mix business and pleasure at these events
You'll thank me 30 years from now.

Stuccoes are very delicate decorative elements of Roman age
Very few of them survived almost intact to present days and
they are of great interest to restorers and conservators
we combined metabarcoding and untargeted metabolomics to characterise the taxonomic and metabolic profiles of the microorganisms forming biofilms on the stuccoes located on the ceiling of the laconicum
a small thermal environment in the archaeological park of Baia (southern Italy)
We found that some samples were dominated by bacteria while others by eukaryotes
we observed high heterogeneity in the type and abundance of bacterial taxa
except in one sample (at prevalence of fungi)
The metabolic profiles were comparable across samples
lipid-like molecules and carbohydrates accounting for roughly the 50% of metabolites
In vitro and in vivo tests to remove biofilms on stuccoes using essential oils blends were successful at a 50% dilution for one hour and half
This integrative study advanced our knowledge on taxonomic and metabolic profiles of biofilms on ancient stuccoes and highlighted the potential impacts of these techniques in the field of cultural heritage conservation
after being uncovered by archaeological excavations
stuccoes are also exposed to deterioration by abiotic and biotic agents
which alter both their structure and aesthetics
they are of particular conservation interest
while the others are still at their infancy
Understanding the type and activity of microorganisms is crucial for planning the best strategies for their removal and to prevent future colonisations
no published studies have used -omics tools for the study of biodeterioration of ancient stuccoes
we employed a multi-omics approach combining metabarcoding of two molecular markers (16S for bacterial communities and 18S for eukaryotic communities) and untargeted metabolomics to assess the taxonomic and metabolic profiles of the bacterial and eukaryotic community involved in the biodeterioration of Roman stuccoes in a thermal environment called laconicum in the archaeological site of Baia (Campania region
this is the first attempt to characterise both microorganism and metabolite diversity using -omics approaches in ancient stuccoes
we tested the efficacy of extracts of essential oils at different dilutions to remove the biological patinas from the stuccoes
The laconicum in the Sector of the Sosandra (Baia archaeological park
(A) Sampling points; (B) details of sampling points
Biological patinas were sampled with sterile scalpels by a restoration student (Sara Scamardella) thanks to an agreement between the University of Studies Suor Orsola Benincasa and the archaeological park of Baia
Two samples (S1 and S2) were collected from the inner east side of the laconicum
while the other five from the ceiling decorated with stuccoes (S3-S7)
Sample S2 was close to a saline efflorescence
The samples were placed into plastic tubes and stored at -20 °C until later analyses
To monitor possible biological contaminations
an extraction blank (sample “ctrl”) was processed as negative control alongside the other samples till the sequencing step; in addition
PCR controls were carried out by the company
Approximately 10 mg of pulverized sample material was weighed into a brown vial and exact mass was noted
A quantity of 0.5 mL of acetone: methanol (50:50) was added to each sample
Samples were mixed using a vortex at 1650 rpm for 3 min and then placed in a glass container filled with crushed ice; the container was kept in an ultrasonic bath for 30 min
The extract was filtered into a LC vial using a 0.2 μm filter
and the vial was stored in a freezer (-80 °C) until analysis
The extraction procedure was repeated two times or more for the same sample
Extracted samples were analyzed by mass spectrometry using the Q-Orbitrap EXPLORIS 120 (Thermo Fisher Scientific
USA) and by Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS) analysis to get the metabolite profile
using a VANQUISH UPLC (Thermo Fisher Scientific
USA) coupled to a Q EXACTIVE mass spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific
USA) equipped with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source in positive mode
A volume of 5 µL of sample was injected into a Hypersil GOLD™ C18 column (2.1 × 200 mm
Mobile phase was A: water + 0.1% TFA and B: Acetonitrile + 0.1% TFA
Chromatographic data were also recorded using a Photodiode array detector operating with a frequency of 12.5 Hz
the mixture was tested at different dilutions in demineralized water (10%
20% and 50%) and after different application times (30 min
2 h) on specimens prepared in the laboratory (data not shown)
The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated through a visual comparison with clean specimens
Once the most suitable times and concentrations have been identified
the treatment was extended to the entire portion of the stucco decorations where biological patinas were observed
The negative control (sample “ctrl”) resulted in no sequences for 16S marker and 21 sequences assigned to Cladosporium and 24 to humans for 18S marker; since human sequences were discarded as non-target and the fungal ones were not found in any of our samples
we excluded a possible role of contaminants in our diversity estimates

Removal of biological patinas with ESSENZIO
(A) Test treatment with contact times of half an hour (1)
and two hours (4); (B) stucco’s area before treatment; (C) stucco’s area during the application of the biocidal product
and before being covered with film; (D) result after treatment
Further studies using archaeal-specific primers are needed to assess their contribution in the biodeterioration of cultural heritage sites
especially the ones interested by saline incrustations
despite the direct role in biodeterioration was not assessed
we report their occurrence for the first time on stuccoes and we did not find any study implying their involvement in the deterioration of cultural heritage
From the in-depth analysis of the different application methods tested in the studies described above
we identified the most important parameters to take into consideration for the application of essential oils and we were able to remove the biofilms on the surfaces of the laconicum
The treatment with ESSENZIO at 50% in demineralized water with an application exposure of one hour and half was successful
and no biofilms were observed after eleven months from the restoration
as well as the first study integrating -omics approaches as metabarcoding and metabolomics on such fragile cultural heritage object
We confirmed that metabarcoding is a powerful technique to quickly and thoroughly characterise the taxonomic diversity of microorganisms in complex matrices as biofilms in respect to classical
also in fragile and delicate materials as stuccoes
we demonstrated that it is possible to extract and isolate numerous metabolites from very low amount of material and that such untargeted-metabolomics analyses are indicative of metabolic pathways active in the biofilms
we also argued that the paucity of biological material collected from stuccoes or cultural heritage items in general
as well as the scattered distribution of biofilms in the study system could affect the detection of statistically significant correlations between abundance of taxa and metabolites
we have proven that a treatment based on essential oils from thyme and oregano effectively removes both bacterial and eukaryotic biofilms from stuccoes
thus confirming its utility in restoration of cultural heritage
To promote the adoption of such integrative approaches
future efforts should focus on the establishment of standardised strategies for sampling
and statistical analyses of cultural heritage objects
it is important not to overlook the value of culture-based methods in enriching taxonomic and metabolomics reference libraries

the NCAA Tournament has come up short this year
There weren’t a ton of buzzer beaters or upsets
The fan moments in the stands were also lacking
We had a little bit of a moment with Liam McNeeley's mom grabbing the spotlight during a UConn loss
but nothing that went off the charts viral
That changed with a Florida student reporter's interview of Bennett Anderson in the Gators' locker room
Florida had just advanced to the Elite 8 and Talia Baia grabbed a minute-long interview with him and social media ran with it. The interview went viral, she ended up on Nightcaps
and we finally had the March Madness moment we expect heading into the tournament every year
Talia's first locker room interview was in the books and about to make her an internet star
These are the moments we tune in for as much as the action on the court
You have to hand it to this student reporter
She was prepared for the added attention of the tournament and leaned into it right away
Talia leaned into it so much so that on Monday she had a couple of announcements to make. The first is that she and Bennett "have a NIL shirt together now."
The second announcement is that her performance over the weekend was worthy of a trip to the Final Four
her ticket was punched along with the team
She wrote
"Also beyond excited to announce I’ll be heading to San Antonio to cover the Final Four!… let me know what content you want to see while I’m there!"
Talia's viral moment gets extended and there's a $35 t-shirt to forever remember the viral locker room interview with
Alma Mater Design, the maker of the shirt, described the collaboration this way: "Celebrate the viral moment with our latest tee featuring Bennett Andersen and Talia Baia! This fun shirt showcases the iconic 'GatorsBoys Stay Hot' phrase, making it a must-have for fans and followers alike."
The description continues, "Crafted with high-quality materials, this tee combines comfort with style, perfect for showcasing your Gator pride. Whether you're heading to a game, hanging out with friends, or just enjoying some casual wear, this shirt is sure to spark conversation. Get yours today and join the fun!"
We've got an internet star, we've got t-shirts, and we've got the Final Four on the way. It doesn’t get much better than this, even if it's loaded with one seeds.

the southern promontory of the gulf of Baia was the perfect location for the construction of villae maritimae for the Roman élite that decided to spend their summer residences by the sea
One of these residences is now located in the military fortress of the Castello Aragonese di Baia
built in 1495 CE during the Aragonese period (15th century)
the ruins of the residential sector of the villa
which historical sources ascribe to Caesar
The most representative evidence of this is the outstanding in situ remain of mosaics
decorated plasters and finely frescoed surfaces decorated according to the repertoire of the II style
This research aims to investigate the polychromy of a wall decoration representing a perspective depiction of architectural scenes en trompe l'oeil analysed by means of a multi-analytical
non-destructive approach performed in situ
The combined use of spectroscopic techniques (portable X-ray fluorescence
Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) points out the use of a characteristic Roman palette
quantitatively assessed by colorimetric measurements
precious materials such as cinnabar and Egyptian blue
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy also revealed the presence of synthetic resins
likely used for the conservation of mural paintings
Gypsum has been identified as the main weathering product
p-XRF and XRPD analyses to identify the composition of pigments and the techniques used
in particular the one that stood on the promontory
where the Castello Aragonese di Baia now stands
The aim of this research is to analyse the Roman wall painting made during the first building phase of the late Republican villa
The peculiarities of the stratification and conservation of the fresco still in situ are an added value
since many frescoes in this area have disappeared irremediably
The wall painting decoration here characterized
unlike the more famous frescoes in the Vesuvian area
is one of the very few testimonies of decorative apparatus of the late Republican age present in the Phlegraean Fields
because of the transformation of the landscape
the historical stratification of the sites
the southern promontory of the gulf of Baia was the ideal place to build villae
whose prestige was also evidenced by the topographical position
which made them visible at a great distance from the sea and
allowed their owners to enjoy a wide panoramic view
The recovery has provided information about the site plant
the building phases and the decoration techniques
chronologically ranging from the late Roman age (250 – 450 BCE) to the first Imperial era (27 BCE—68 CE)
3D recontruction of wall in opus quasi reticulatum (from [10]) preserving
the perspective depiction of architectural scenes en trompe l'oeil
decorated according the II style repertoire
and details of the areas where non-invasive analyses have been performed
Non-invasive techniques were performed in situ to obtain minero-petrographic and chemical information on the polychromy of wall paintings (Supplementary Table 1)
works are subject to degradation due to aging of materials and possible lack of maintenance
the following parameters were checked by using a thermo-hygrometer: (i) ambient temperature at 10 °C; (ii) humidity at 65%; (iii) distance of 2 m; (iv) emissivity at 0.93
The parameters were evaluated with FLIR T1030sc
Accuracy of ± 1% or ± 1 °C of measurements
Below is the description of each colour hue, visible in Fig. 3.
Images of each colour hue acquired in situ on the frescoed surfaces via digital microscopy
Representative XRF spectra of each colour hue analysed on the wall painting
Representative Raman spectra of analysed pigments
The red colour predominates in the wall painting, both in bright and dark shades (Fig. 3) and
spectroscopic data revealed that the different colours were obtained by using different pigments
b*) obtained on each colour hue by portable colorimetry
were later drawn where a green decoration had been carried out
ER-FTIR spectra of a pink (a) and red area (b) showing spectral evidence of alteration and restoration products (white arrows on image of red area indicate visible efflorescence phenomena)
Black colour was used for the horizontal drape hiding the top of the colonnade depicted in the lateral sides, as well as for three drapes that allowed the sky to filter through (Fig. 3)
The sky was depicted using a unique shade of green, with an average L* value of 51.54, an average a* value of −9.97 and an average b* value of 5.80 (Fig. 6; Supplementary Table 3)
Thermogram and optical images of the rear fresco
Thermogram and optical images of the front fresco
This comprehensive research uses a multi-analytical and non-invasive approach
to provide a complete characterization of the polychromy of frescoed surfaces of the Roman Villa at the Castle of Baia (Naples
which represent depictions of architectural scenes en trompe l'oeil
This multi-analytical approach allowed us to point out the use of a characteristic Roman palette composed of different groups of colour consisting of different ochres
attributed to the use of cinnabar mixed with other pigments;
derived mainly from the use of red ochres and
also from red organic dye mixed with inorganic materials;
blue pigment can be identified on Cu-based pigment
it is a Cu-based pigment probably mixed with Egyptian blue and natural earth pigments to have more brilliant colours
This has been confirmed by the presence of both Cu and Fe in this green
ER-FTIR showed the possible presence of synthetic resins
but damaged by atmospheric humidity as detected by thermography
This study may represent a valuable reference for future restoration projects of the investigated fresco
Future developments should regard a deeper investigation involving the recovery of samples to perform laboratory analysis (e.g.
chemical analysis) or other non-invasive analyses such as multispectral imaging
No datasets were generated or analysed during the current study

and no one knows this better than millennials
they were everywhere—in television laugh tracks for “The Big Bang Theory,” in breathless think pieces about social-media narcissism

we once published more than seventy-five millennial-related listicles per hour
Now no one cares about millennials or thinks about them at all
But what happened to these millennials who once lived large in our hearts and in our online conversations
We’ve hunted them down for old times’ sake
Many of them are dead.Millennials are now very
Although some of them are desperately hanging on to life
trapped in cubicles and still trying to pay off their grad-school loans
lots of millennials are now retired or expired
the oldest living millennial is more than a hundred years old
while everyone else was distracted by pandemics and politics and TikTok
skeletal hand of time pulled the millennials into the abyss
(That’s something millennials used to shout when they were still capable of sassy
A lot of them are stuck in limbo on dating apps.According to our research

It dates back to the end of the Roman Empire
Published: Jul 19, 2024written by Emily Snow
Archaeologists in Italy painstakingly restored an ancient marble floor they discovered underwater
It was built in the town of Baia towards the end of the Roman Empire
it is part of the Archaeological Marine Park of Baia
Last year, archaeologists announced the discovery of an ancient marble floor in a submerged Roman villa. Located in the ancient spa town of Baia (or Baiae), the floor dates back to the final years of the Roman Empire
It spans about 2,700 feet and was built with fragments of used marble
likely due to financial strain befalling even the wealthiest citizens of the declining empire
The archaeologists described the floor as “a very costly and demanding endeavor for the owner of the villa
The colorful and complex marble design is an opus sectile floor—a decorative style comprising carefully cut pieces of stone or marble laid in intricate geometric patterns or even pictorial designs. While mosaics are made with small
opus sectile uses larger pieces in different shapes that fit together
The opus sectile technique incorporates an eye-catching variety of colors and materials and facilitates elaborate detail
it was often used to indicate the wealth and good taste of a building’s inhabitants
The restoration of the ancient marble floor is part of ongoing excavations of the Roman Empire’s underwater relics
It is an ambitious collaboration between CSR Restauro Beni Culturali and Naumacos Underwater Archaeology & Technology
Archaeologists at the site emphasized the unique difficulty of underwater excavations
We are in the Submerged Park of Baiae and this marble floor has been the subject of the latest underwater restoration works: a very complicated new challenge due to the extreme fragmentation of the remains and their large extent.”
The partly submerged ruins of Baia are on the northwest shore of the Gulf of Naples in the modern-day commune of Bacoli, Italy. Once a seaside spa town frequented by Caligula and Nero
Baia slowly sank below sea level due to bradyseism—a type of ground surface deformation caused by volcanic activity
the ruins of Baia are now partially submerged
and statues from Baia have been found underwater in recent years
the Archaeological Marine Park of Baia opened in 2002
the park operates eight archaeological sites that are accessible to snorkelers and scuba divers

A remarkable marble floor in the submerged city of Baiae—dubbed the "Las Vegas" of ancient Rome—has been revealed
and an archaeologist with the team told Newsweek about the process and its significance
The Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields posted underwater images of the multicolored floor to its Facebook page
noting that experts were in the process of restoring the find
The floor is an example of "opus sectile"—a type of mosaic work consisting of materials (such as marble
pearl and glass) that were cut and inlaid to form images or patterns
The pieces used to create opus sectile works are much larger than the ones found in tessellated mosaics and often were shaped to define large parts of the design
the designs of tessellated mosaics consist of numerous
smaller pieces that are generally uniform in size
The opus sectile work in Baia once served as the floor of the reception room of a Roman villa—a type of high-status dwelling—in the city
Baiae was an ancient Roman settlement located on the shore of the Gulf of Pozzuoli
that served as a playground for the elite in its heyday
Rome's rich and powerful built luxurious villas at the site—including the rulers Julius Caesar
and Hadrian—attracted by its beautiful setting and healing natural hot springs
not to mention its reputation for hedonism
wrote in a letter after visiting Baiae that the city had become a resort of "vice" while bemoaning that it was a "place to be avoided."
luxury has claimed it for her own exclusive resort..
To witness persons wandering drunk along the beach
released from the restraints of law not merely sins
but blazons its sins abroad—why must I witness all this?" Seneca wrote
But Baiae's party eventually came to an end thanks to geological processes
The Gulf of Pozzuoli—which itself forms the western part of the much larger Gulf of Naples—lies in the caldera of a super-volcano known as the Phlegraean Fields
such as the movement of magma in subterranean chambers
resulted in the submersion of the lower parts of Baiae over time
as well as other ancient coastal sites dotted along the edge of the Gulf of Pozzuoli
riunite per creare una articolatissima geometria 📐🌊 Siamo nel Parco sommerso di Baia e questo pavimento marmoreo è stato al centro..
The submerged parts of Baiae are now protected as part of a vast underwater archaeological park
villas and beautifully preserved Roman mosaics
The opus sectile work currently undergoing restoration is composed of thousands of marble slabs
which extends across an area of roughly 2,700 square feet
is thought to have been constructed towards the end of the Roman Empire
shortly before geological processes caused the ground to sink to the bottom of the sea
but the difficult condition of the very fragmented remains had not allowed intervention," Enrico Gallocchio with the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields told Newsweek
it was possible to start working on the most exposed parts
but understanding its design was a discovery
because we did not know the geometric shape."
"This discovery tells us about what was going on in [Baiae] a very few years before its sinking."
Do you have a tip on a science story that Newsweek should be covering

Romania have named 38 players in an extended training squad ahead of their upcoming test series against Tonga
Head Coach David Gérard’s squad is almost entirely domestic-based with only two players included from French clubs
Nearly all have suited up for the Romanian Wolves recently in the Rugby Europe Super Cup
Included in the selection are seven uncapped players
Among them are loosehead prop or hooker George Ilincuta
loose forwards Kemal Altinok and Eduard Cioroaba
and 6’4″ (1.92m) Steaua winger Rafael Florea
Young locks Virgil Ghenea and David Trausan are called to help fill in an unusual second row component
Stefan Iancu is the only capped specialist included
with Vlad Neculau and Nicolaas Immelman both typically employed as back row forwards
In a media release
Gérard says the group is likely to change after the Tonga test as he looks towards the Rugby Europe Championship and World Cup qualification
After some doubt as to the location of the tests
Rugby Romania has now confirmed that all three will be played at their traditional home in Bucharest – the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf

tree-shaded courtyard of Pavle Ingorokva Street 19a a cultural resurrection is underway
Behind the doors of Baia Gallery’s space for private collections
Avant-garde and Modernism’ has cracked open a previously unseen archive of Georgia’s artistic DNA
What we are witnessing here is less an exhibition than an aesthetic excavation
known for its deep engagement with Georgian visual culture
has gone subterranean—digging through the treasure vaults of private collectors to present works that have
never before seen the light of public space
sometimes dizzying constellation of masterworks that reframes the narrative of Georgian modernism and boldly reasserts the country’s position within the pan-European avant-garde
Kakabadze’s ‘Abstraction’ anchors the show with scientific detachment and poetic tension
while his lesser-known photographic works underscore his interdisciplinarity—a trait many Georgian avant-gardists shared but were rarely celebrated for
The familiar icon Lado Gudiashvili is present but cleverly defamiliarized
along with those of Shalva Kikodze and Sergo Kobuladze
are not merely nostalgic flourishes of Georgian exoticism
They’re read here as fragments of a broader surrealist and post-symbolist dialogue
closer to Giorgio de Chirico than provincial romanticism
looks less like a folklorist and more like a metaphysical alchemist of the Caucasus
If Kakabadze is the theoretician of Constructivism
Petre Otskheli and Irakli Gamrekeli are its mythmakers
represented here with ‘Choreographic Costume’ and other sketches
remind us that Georgia’s modernism was not only visual but deeply theatrical
Gamrekeli’s architectural severity and Otskheli’s expressive minimalism mark a moment when Georgian scenography was rewriting the visual language of Soviet-era performance
here presented with a pair of hauntingly intimate pieces: ‘Nude’ and ‘Still-life Against Mountains Background.’ They function like meditative pauses in an otherwise intense show
grounding the abstract and performative with a bodily
Zdanevich is the one who reminds us that modernism is not always an explosion—it is sometimes the stillness before the quake
Avto Varazi’s ‘Sleeping Woman’ and ‘Woman with Loose Hair’ offer a radically different but equally metaphysical vision
Painted in tones of melancholy and inward collapse
Varazi paints not just bodies but epochs; disoriented
Baia Gallery’s brilliance lies in assembling not just a canon
The inclusion of foreign artists who worked in Georgia
and Georgian émigrés like Vera Pagava and Felix Varlamishvili
blurs the tidy boundaries of “national art” in favor of a cosmopolitan vision
Take Pagava’s ‘La Rencontre.’ Painted in France
yet steeped in a poetics that feels uncannily Georgian
it bridges her Parisian exile with a lingering homeland sensibility
Varlamishvili’s ‘Harvest’ and ‘View of Toledo’ similarly fuse Iberian landscapes with Caucasian chromatics
subtly articulating the identity crisis of the émigré painter
that the Georgian 20th century was never provincial
It was plugged into a broader European and Russian avant-garde dialogue
but always expressed in a language of its own
The show draws from the Baia Gallery’s own database of over 5,000 works
an archival project in progress that could one day redefine how Georgia writes its cultural history
In a country where artists have often been erased by political agendas or lost to diaspora
exhibitions like this one act as correctives
the exhibition allows us to see how generational echoes ripple through time
decorative lines of Shalva Kikodze reappear in the stylizations of Lado Gudiashvili; the philosophical somberness of Kandinsky finds an unlikely heir in Zdanevich’s sensual yet mystical ‘Still-Life Against Mountains Background.’
but influences born of shared dislocations—of artists moving between cities
‘Collection—XX Century’ shows us that modernism in Georgia was never about isolation; it was about navigation
In an era of rapid digital visibility and algorithmic canonization
‘Collection—XX Century’ reminds us of something more intimate
and more profound: the quiet heroism of remembering
but the fragile traces of modernity’s passage through a small but incandescent nation

During the Roman era, the southern promontory of the Gulf of Baia (in Latin Baiae) was the perfect location for constructing villae maritimae for the Roman elite
who chose to spend their summer residences by the sea
One of these residences is located today in the military fortress of the Castello Aragonese di Baia
built in 1495 AD during the Aragonese period
archaeologists unearthed the ruins of the residential sector of the villa
which historical sources attribute to Julius Caesar
are the exceptional in situ remains of mosaics
decorated in the repertoire of the Second Style
Among the most impressive finds is a monumental fresco adorning a wall in opus quasi reticulatum
a construction technique typical of the late Republican period
depicts an architectural scene in perspective using trompe l’oeil
an illusionistic style that creates the impression of depth and three-dimensionality on a flat surface
The central composition features a round arch framed by intense red drapery
a circular temple supported by twelve majestic columns
a portico with Ionic columns adds depth to the scene
while the background is tinted with green hues evoking an ethereal sky
What has especially intrigued researchers is the detailed analysis of the pigments used in these wall paintings
and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
scientists have identified a palette of colors that is not only diverse but also incredibly expensive by the standards of the time
The most surprising discovery has been the widespread presence of cinnabar
a bright red pigment composed of mercury sulfide
known in antiquity for being more valuable than gold
used extensively in the red draperies and in the monochromatic backgrounds of the lateral decorations
is a testament to the power and wealth of the villa’s owner
The legal price for pigments set cinnabar at 70 sesterces per pound
compared to 6 denarii for minium or 2 denarii for hematite
This is why painters often mixed cinnabar with less expensive pigments like red ochre
other precious pigments have been identified
following the true fresco technique that ensured the durability of the paintings
The technical sophistication of these wall decorations goes beyond the choice of pigments
Analyses have revealed a masterful use of color mixing to create shading and volume effects
as seen in the white columns subtly painted with iron-based pigments to simulate relief
the presence of organic pigments in the pink areas suggests a level of artistic refinement reserved only for the most prestigious residences
Researchers have also detected the presence of synthetic resins
likely applied in modern attempts to preserve the paintings
as well as degradation products such as gypsum
indicating the ongoing challenges in conserving these archaeological treasures
The opulence of the decoration and the choice of iconographic themes reflect not only the personal taste of the owner but also the aspirations and values of a ruling class on the eve of profound social and political changes
is one of the very few testimonies of late Republican decorative apparatus present in the Phlegraean Fields
due to the transformation of the landscape
