inflammation—not fat—was the true culprit behind her struggles Actor Vidya Balan has long been recognised for her talent and on-screen versatility she has also faced criticism and scrutiny over her body weight Balan revealed that after years of battling her weight despite dieting and regular exercise Balan found success by adopting an anti-inflammatory diet transforming her weight loss journey by focusing on her body’s unique response to certain foods and cutting back on exercise The actor explained that a chance meeting with Chennai-based nutritional group Amura Health introduced her to the concept of chronic inflammation as a hidden barrier to weight loss She was advised to follow an elimination diet targeting inflammation which not only brought her noticeable weight loss but also prompted her to rethink her views on exercise and dieting Balan shared how Amura Health helped her identify foods that ‘It is just inflammation; it is not fat’.” which are considered healthy and had previously been included in her vegetarian diet This revelation helped her switch to an anti-inflammatory diet that aligned with her body’s specific needs even without the rigorous workout routines she had maintained for years This shift in her routine was a drastic change from her earlier approach Balan shared that 2024 marked the first year she avoided exercise altogether she admitted that the shift in her body was evident without the need for strenuous workouts you are your slimmest,’ and I have not worked out all year,” she noted Balan’s journey highlights a broader health trend with chronic inflammation emerging as a key factor in weight management Research shows that inflammation can disrupt the body’s metabolic processes making weight loss challenging even for those who maintain a healthy lifestyle Chronic inflammation often leads to insulin resistance and can trigger a cycle where inflammation feeds further weight gain Hyderabad-based endocrinologist Dr Deepti Sahay told South First significantly contributes to internal inflammation.” release cytokines—immune-response chemicals these cytokines are produced in abnormal quantities low-level inflammation throughout the body.” persistent inflammation affects organs and metabolic functions The studies show that elevated levels of specific markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) are frequently observed in individuals with higher body mass indexes (BMIs) indicating a correlation between these inflammatory markers and weight gain “The presence of these markers suggests a vicious cycle where inflammation perpetuates weight gain which in turn exacerbates inflammation,” she said Balan’s revelation about her experience with exercise also sheds light on the often misunderstood role of physical activity in weight management only to find her efforts undermined by chronic inflammation “I would not have believed it if someone had told me last year impairing weight loss and affecting overall health Dr Sahay said that while moderate exercise is beneficial overtraining without adequate recovery can lead to a physiological stress response that triggers inflammation “High-intensity and prolonged exercise can stimulate the body’s stress response resulting in an increase in inflammatory markers excessive exercise can lead to persistent inflammation.” “While moderate exercise supports immune health overtraining can actually weaken the immune system making the body more susceptible to infections and inflammation excessive training disrupts hormone levels can lead to ongoing inflammation,” Dr Sahay added “By shifting focus from intense workouts to dietary adjustments a person can find a way to maintain their health,” she said Balan has long been outspoken about the pressures women face to conform to specific beauty standards and her journey opens up a broader conversation about body positivity and acceptance Balan noted the harsh societal judgments around body image and how they affected her self-esteem people put on weight for various reasons… our bodies express what we are going through emotionally,” she explained urging others to recognize and respect individuality encouraging people to look beyond conventional weight loss advice and consider more holistic Balan advocates for the importance of understanding what works uniquely for one’s body rather than following generalised health trends For those looking to manage inflammation and achieve sustainable weight loss Dr Sahay recommends a comprehensive approach that includes dietary changes Dietary changes: Anti-inflammatory diets rich in fruits and omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation Avoiding processed foods and those high in sugar and saturated fats is crucial Exercise in moderation: While regular exercise is important moderation and recovery are essential to prevent exercise-induced inflammation Lifestyle modifications: Stress management techniques such as To take a pause & catch your breath requires courage … More power to you … Respect! her post quickly sparked controversy when some netizens alleged that the appreciation might have been orchestrated by Rohit's PR team The claims gained traction after Vidya reportedly posted a screenshot of a WhatsApp message purportedly sent by the cricketer’s PR team The incident led to a wave of online trolling with critics accusing her of being part of a publicity stunt overshadowing her original message of admiration The speculations online prompted the actor's team to issue a statement rubbishing the claims "There has been some speculation regarding a tweet Ms.Vidya Balan put out yesterday expressing her admiration for the grace Rohit Sharma exhibited by stepping back as a player and captain from the last test match," the statement read "Let it be unequivocally stated that Ms.Balan posted this completely of her own volition because she was moved by his selfless act but she is a fan of those who show dignity and class under trying circumstances To attribute her actions to anything other than a spontaneous reaction to something she found admirable is completely preposterous," it further said Actor Farhan Akhtar also shared a post in support of Rohit Sharma earlier the same day You know what you’re doing and I know you won’t let the negativity get you down. but just want to say thank you for showing the world that you put team before individual It’s a hard thing to do and only the strongest of mind and heart can do it Many users pointed out that neither Vidya not Farhan follow Rohit Sharma on social media Rohit Sharma's decision to step back as captain from the fifth test has been a topic of debate among fans and cricket experts alike While some view it as a bold and necessary move others question the timing during a critical series against Australia ALSO SEE: Vidya Balan Talks Nepotism In Bollywood And Feeling Bullied By Shah Rukh And Saif Ali Khan: 'I Was Very Alone' ALSO SEE: Vidya Balan (45) Reveals She Was Trolled For 'Looking Older' Than Shahid Kapoor (43) In Film; 'It Was Witch Hunt' Trauthwein has covered the global maritime market for more than 25.. Genoa Design International has been providing production design and 3D modeling services to shipbuilding and offshore industries from Newfoundland and Labrador for nearly 30 years with defense budgets booming around the world and the recently signed Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (“ICE PACT”) between the Canada which is a trilateral arrangement to collaborate on the production of polar icebreakers and other capabilities Can you give us a personal and professional history with insights on your responsibilities today at Genoa Design International That's where we've seen a significant resurgence of ship design and shipbuilding over the last couple of decades I graduated from Memorial University in Newfoundland & Labrador as a mechanical engineer and I thought at the time I was going to spend my career in the offshore oil and gas industry because it was booming at the time I returned to the Atlantic provinces and was introduced to the working world of naval architecture and marine engineering engineering changes for ships in operations so the maintenance of ships in service support programs as the national shipbuilding strategy took off and we started designing and building ships that were desperately needed in Canada all the operations and the business performance of the company from customer delivery where make sure that we execute quality products with constant schedule certainty I really get to touch the entire organization I also get to work really closely with a pretty tight executive team as well as our board of directors to develop the strategy for the company At a time when geopolitical pressures are putting a lot of pressure on the industry it's an exciting time to be here and to be the COO of a company that is thriving and innovative. Can you give us a ‘by the numbers’ look at Genoa Design today I think it's worth looking at Genoa over the last 10 years or so to get a true picture of our growth the industry that had been essentially dormant for a couple of decades meaning there were new and exciting programs to work on and it gave companies like Genoa an opportunity to work on engineering projects that were design-related We were fortunate to have joined forces with Seaspan and other supply chain partners from the early days and that's where we grew and matured as a company We grew from about 20 employees to about 240 across Canada and the US today Our revenues grew exponentially as well over that timeframe “Looking out over the next five to 10 years and that's where the significant backlog of government work resides at the moment in the shipbuilding industry the ICE Pact that's recently been announced between Canada Finland and the US will promote opportunities for companies like Genoa to export our expertise and continue that growth and development in Canada but also outside of Canada.”Laurie Balan Genoa Design InternationalImage Courtesy Genoa Design International with insight on where you see it growing in the coming decade Most of our work today is government and navy contracts We still do commercial work from time to time when it aligns with our strategic direction we work on major large programs in Canada and the US About 75% of that right now is currently in Canada Looking out over the next five to 10 years but also outside of Canada.Image Courtesy Genoa Design International There's a lot of geopolitical conflict right now there's a lot of investment in defense globally I don't know how big I expect it to get people and innovation in one country to develop it and do it all in-house We've been fortunate along the way to have worked successfully with US companies We have all the security requirements and defense requirements to be able to partner there's so many new ships to be designed and to be built that we need expertise from more than just inside the US and more than just inside of Canada Even under the national shipbuilding strategy while the intent of that program was to build up the Canadian industry that too is beyond ourselves and our expertise and we've reached out to other companies with expertise from the likes of Finland to be able to accomplish it all I think there's a lot of opportunity for multiple companies to answer the call and stand up to the challenge and be innovative is there one or two that stand out in terms of showcasing the value that Genoa Design delivers Right now there are two major concurrent projects that we're working on: the icebreakers for Canada and the icebreakers for the US Both countries are replenishing their heavy icebreaker fleet as the current vessels in operation went into service before I was born An opportunity to contribute to the designs of those complex vessels highlights Genoa's expertise in icebreaker design While we typically ramp up our teams later in the functional design phases our designers have to be intimately familiar with ice class rules and detail the design in a way that meets those rule sets as well as the build strategy and processes That really speaks to Genoa's adaptability and agility that we show our clients The Newfoundland & Labrador cluster is unique in how it operates together can you discuss what your company puts into it Newfoundland & Labrador's history is linked to the sea We are uniquely positioned as the gateway to the Arctic as well as to Western Europe Our schools are noteworthy in terms of how they support the industry College of the North Atlantic or other private colleges in the province Graduates are recognized as top in their field and are ready to work anywhere in the world when they graduate and you don't have to look far to find locally grown companies like Genoa Kraken and Virtual Marine – to name a few – at the forefront of innovation simulation and innovation centers here that are developing leading edge solutions that are being used across the globe our province could do a better job of promoting ourselves and maybe we need to toot our own horns a little bit more to share our knowledge and our expertise with the world There's a real sense of cooperation and camaraderie here in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador that I don't think you see everywhere There is something special about Newfoundland and Labrador for sure; there's something special about Genoa Those are some of the reasons that I'm still so passionate about this industry which is typically viewed as a ‘traditional’ industry [Part of my job] is to share those stories and attract younger professionals [to fuel] the next generation of the industry and we apply new tools and technologies to make this industry better and we apply new tools and technologies to make this industry better.”Image Courtesy Genoa Design International Vard has secured a new contract The company’s share price sat at 65.4p per share upon last Thursday’s closing but now sits at just 24.5p per share – dropping by 64.3% in the past five days Mr Balan said he regrets his mistake and revealed the decision he made was based on “minimising distraction” I made an honest oversight with respect to the description of my professional qualification as a chartered accountant instead of a certified practicing accountant “I continue to believe in the long-term potential of the company and its people “My decision is based on minimising distraction at this very pivotal time with our investors and lenders.” Wood appointed Mr Balan to the company’s board as chief financial officer and executive director on April 15 2024 He arrived from the same role at the civil aerospace business of Rolls-Royce and had worked in numerous financial roles for the oil firm Shell whose intention to retire was announced in August 2023 Wood said an announcement on Mr Balan’s successor as well as interim cover will be made in due course Chief executive Ken Gilmartin said: “On behalf of the board and the company I would like to wish Arvind all the best in his future endeavours” Mr Balan’s resignation is more bad news for Wood which had expected a “very strong” trading performance in the final quarter of 2024 This led to the decision to cancel its annual executive and employee bonus for the year. The troubled firm employs 35,000 people and suffered a series of setbacks in 2024 It then saw its share price collapse in August when Sidara walked away from a proposed takeover deal More bad news followed when announcing its half-year results which showed a £756 million loss In November, it saw the collapse of its market value by £500 million when it announced an “urgent” independent review of its books.
