KOLKATA: West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader John Barla on Thursday took a veiled swipe at the party’s Alipurduar MP for mismanaging the organisation ahead of the November 13 bypoll but countered speculation that he was about to cross over to the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), saying he had no such plans at the moment.
Former minister John Barla said the BJP has completely mismanaged its organisation in this region (X/johnbarlabjp) Barla, a former union minister, has been unhappy for months over the party’s decision to field Manoj Tigga for the Lok Sabha elections from the Alipurduar seat in north Bengal rather than repeat him. Barla represented Alipurduar in the Lok Sabha between 2019 and 2024.
But the buzz about his possible exit picked up on Wednesday after he was spotted exchanging pleasantries with Jay Prakash Toppo, the TMC candidate from the Madarihat assembly seat, for the November 13 bypoll.
Barla has adopted a hands-off approach to the bypoll. “I am staying aloof these days because my party has completely mismanaged its organisation in this region. Everything is being controlled by one man these days. I am concentrating on tribal welfare issues, something I was always associated with,” Barla said, indirectly targeting Tigga.
Asked if he plans to join the TMC, Barla said: “There are no such plans at the moment. I was travelling when I heard that the TMC candidate was having tea at a local cafe. He is like my brother. I stopped by and exchanged pleasantries.”
The TMC has not commented on Barla. A local TMC leader, Dwipen Pramanik, did visit Barla at home on Monday evening. “I have known Pramanik for a long time. It was a courtesy call,” Barla said.
BJP leaders confirmed that Barla was not campaigning for Rahul Lohar, the BJP candidate from Madarihat.
Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said: “In the BJP, individuals are never more important than the organisation. We are keeping a watch on the developments.”
Madarihat is one of the seven assembly segments that constitute the Alipurduar Lok Sabha seat. The Madarihat seat fell vacant this year after Manoj Tigga, a two-time MLA, quit following his election to the Lok Sabha.
THE first thing that stood out for me, in the second round of the BARLA National Cup, is that holders Thatto Heath Crusaders and last year’s runners-up Orrell St James both won.
Thatto beat St Helens neighbours Pilkington Recs and Orrell St James prevailed at Westhoughton Lions, both by comfortable margins, in ties played on Thursday evening. That suggests a repeat of the 2024 decider can’t be ruled out when the final takes place in early November.
Who the Crusaders and the Saints will meet in the third round (quarter-finals) on the August Bank Holiday weekend has yet to be determined, the draw having not yet been made (BARLA has, so far, still to announce the date for that) but whoever gets paired with either side will clearly have a job on.
Sadly, there were three ‘walkovers’ in the weekend’s eight ties, with 18-0 results registered against Folly Lane (at Sharlston Rovers), Wigan St Judes (at King Cross Park) and Wigan St Patricks (at Woolston Rovers).
That’s very unfortunate and another indication, perhaps, of the Bank Holiday blues that seem to affect team sports these days, and to which I referred last week. Let’s hope there are no repeats in the quarter-finals.
Those blues appear to have also affected the semi-finals of the Barrow and District League’s Barton Townley Cup, with Ulverston conceding Saturday’s tie against Millom at the Northern Competitions Stadium (aka Craven Park).
The Woolybacks are therefore through to the final (which is also scheduled for Barrow Raiders’ grand old stadium in another August Bank Holiday special), where they will meet Dalton, who edged Hindpool Tigers in the game that actually went ahead in what should have been an enthralling double-header.
There were no such blights surrounding the Oldham and District League’s Standard Cup final, in which Waterhead Warriors eventually saw off St Annes in a pulsating affair played out before a big Boundary Park crowd.
The Barton Townley and Standard Cup finals are, I’d say, the most prestigious of local deciders in the grassroots and I’m very grateful to veteran journos Paddy McAteer and Roger Halstead for sending reports to me.
The President’s Cup got off to a grand start on Wednesday when holders England Universities beat Great Britain Teachers 26-16.
This year’s competition is a three-team affair, with Great Britain Police having not entered this time for procedural reasons and UK Armed Forces due to play the Teachers next month.
The Students’ manager David Butler, who kindly submitted a match report, made the point that his team only beat the Teachers by eight points last year. There’s clearly very little between the two teams, which I suppose is one of the strengths of the President’s Cup in its relatively recent guise.
I’m looking forward the clash between the Armed Forces (who are unable to yet name their squad, given global concerns) and the Teachers, which will be played at Orrell St James on Wednesday, May 14.
And I’m also awaiting with keen anticipation the tri-series’ closing game, when the Students and the Armed Forces will meet in London, at a venue yet to be announced. Let’s hope all the games are as closely contested as last week’s was.
An ongoing issue for as long as I can remember during the decades I’ve covered the grassroots game is the way that professional clubs pillage amateur sides in their pursuit of young talent.
There’s nothing wrong at all, of course, in Betfred Super League outfits (or, for that matter, those in the Championship or League One) giving young players the chance to progress as far as they can in Rugby League.
Indeed, I’d say they have an obligation to do just that. But it doesn’t always quite work out that way, does it?
Let’s nail the situation – which hails back throughout the sport’s history – shall we?
Professional clubs want to sign the best players they can, and for as little outlay as possible. Again, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with that. It’s the nature of business, after all.
At the same time, ambitious young players (not to mention their parents or guardians) want to further their careers as far as they can.
Where it goes wrong, and has done for far too long, is when the professional outfits simply trawl through amateur teams, taking just about every player regardless of whether they genuinely think they will make it or not, leaving a wilderness behind.
Any farmer (or anyone who, as a child, learned at school that land should be nurtured not ravaged) will tell you that’s not only wrong, but plain stupid.
Why the Rugby Football League consistently fail to get a grip on this is absolutely beyond me. After all, even if those at the Etihad don’t give a stuff about the amateur game – which I do not think for a moment is the case – they should appreciate that without the grassroots, there is no professional game.
As such, professional clubs should not be allowed to destroy what ultimately sustains the entire sport in this country.
I was reminded – yet again – of all this when I bumped into a friend of mine last week who has long been involved with a leading National Conference League outfit. He reiterated concerns which have been made to me, by many others, over the years.
And I somehow suspect that if nothing is done to resolve the matter (and on past performance I can’t see that happening) the same worries will be expressed to me 20 years from now, if I’m still alive to listen that is and (more importantly) if we still have a game.
I’m sick and tired of blokes whose views I respect telling of how lads come back to them from Academies ruined (if they come back at all) by, all too often, tick-box coaching.
And don’t get me started on the Scholarships, which were never meant to be ‘playing’ competitions and which have further undermined our amateur clubs which, if those at our governing body were more (or at all) prudent, would be left to get on with a job they generally do very well, which is producing as many players as possible and, perhaps with the help of local professional clubs, making them as good as they can be.
Perhaps this is another issue I can raise with Nigel Wood once he’s got his foot under the table.
Meanwhile a thought occurred when I was watching the cracking televised Super League games on Good Friday, when commentators discussed the dismissal of Hull FC’s Cade Cust in the derby with Hull KR, and the sinbinning of Wigan’s Sam Walters, both for high tackles which, as several rightly said, wouldn’t have been sanctioned at all back in the day.
I know where they were coming from and I agree with the general sentiment, which is that we’re in different times and that’s how it is now.
It’s an issue that mainly affects the professional game, but there could also be an impact at amateur level. My thought is – if the current approach continues, it could very well be possible for so many players to be red or yellow carded that a team could be reduced to eight, and then what? The match would have to be abandoned, I think.
I wonder whether that’s where we are headed? It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility, is it?

THE draw for the quarter-finals of the BARLA National Cup (ties to be played Saturday, August 23) is: Kippax Welfare v Brighouse Rangers; Orrell St James v Wath Brow Hornets; King Cross Park v Thatto Heath Crusaders; Sharlston Rovers v Woolston Rovers.
The final will be played in early November, at a venue to be confirmed.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union minister John Barla attended an administrative meeting of chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, sparking speculation about his plan to join West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. (X) “Mamata Banerjee came here because she wants development of this region. She called me,” Barla told journalists.
Banerjee and Barla exchanged pleasantries before the meeting in North Bengal’s Alipurduar district. Wait and see, Barla said when asked about his plan to join TMC.
TMC leaders, bureaucrats, and locals attended the meeting like all administrative meetings Banerjee holds in districts.
Barla, a tribal leader, represented the Alipurduar Lok Sabha seat from 2019 to 2024. TMC office bearers have been meeting him since the BJP denied him the ticket for last year’s Lok Sabha polls, prompting him to distance himself from the party. He challenged BJP party for not fielding him for the second time from the seat reserved for tribals.
In November, Barla posed with Jay Prakash Toppo, the TMC candidate for the Madarihat assembly by-poll in Alipurduar. Barla did not campaign for Rahul Lohar, the BJP candidate for the by-poll, which Toppo won.
West Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya downplayed Barla’s presence at Banerjee’s meeting. “In BJP individuals are never more important than the party. Barla is still a BJP member. Today’s development has only proved how relevant the BJP is in Bengal politics.”
In the 2021 assembly polls, BJP bagged 30 of the 54 seats in the eight north Bengal districts. TMC overall won 215 of the state’s 294 seats.

Even after 54 years of independence, the brutal massacre of December 13, 1971 still haunts the remote village of Barla in Kendua upazila, Netrokona.
The families of the victims continue to live with unbearable grief and deep emotional scars and yet the massacre is not officially acknowledged or recorded.
Barla was different from other villages of Kendua. It was a quiet, secluded place with no transportation access other than by foot from Netrokona. This geographical isolation made it an ideal stronghold for freedom fighters during the Liberation War.
According to a surviving war hero, Barla was a significant resistance base, housing over a hundred freedom fighters who fought against the Pakistani military. There were three camps at the houses of Rahman Bhuiyan, Khalek Bhuiyan, and Abdur Rashid Bhuiyan.
The story goes that the local freedom fighters had captured a notorious collaborator from the village called Moijja. This enraged the Pakistani forces after another collaborator from Atharbari informed them about the resistance in Barla.
On Thursday, December 13, 1971, most freedom fighters were away on an operation. Taking advantage of their absence, the Pakistani army launched a ruthless attack.
They killed four innocent villagers—Majdhar Miah, Abdul Khalek, Juskam Uddin, and Sujon Miah—by shooting them in cold blood. The entire village was set on fire, and looting followed. Women and children were not spared from the brutal violence.
Laila, a young girl at the time, still vividly recalls the harrowing scenes.
She said, "I saw them killing people right before my eyes. They killed my brother, my father. We were too scared to speak, only trying to save ourselves. Many women and children were tortured. The Pakistanis shot two more villagers. We were hiding, only hearing the screams and cries... Oh, the agony! Everyone was running wherever they could. When the country became free, we returned to find everything gone."
It seemed as though Barla had turned into a land of death that day.
The Barla massacre remains a dark chapter of history. However, despite the passage of so many years, this tragic event has not been officially recognised. The locals demand that the government take necessary steps to preserve this bit of history for future generations.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Imdadul Haque Talukdar said, "The brutal history of Barla village during the Liberation War has not yet been documented, which is truly unfortunate. We will make every effort to bring it under the patronage of the state."
The people of Barla have only one demand—official recognition of the massacre and the construction of a memorial. It is only through this acknowledgment that the sacrifice of the victims can be honored.

Nikhil Barla reflected on his breakthrough season and outlined his goals for the new season in this exclusive interview
Jamshedpur FC winger Nikhil Barla is aiming for big achievements in the Indian Super League (ISL)
The Jharkhand native made his ISL debut against Odisha FC in the 2022-23 season's final league match
but his real breakthrough came in the following season
Barla was shifted to a right-winger position by coach Steve Cooper
and the 21-year-old was given a more attacking role under Khalid Jamil
Barla clocked 954 minutes in 19 ISL appearances
frequently making dangerous crosses from the right flank
He also became a valuable substitute in several matches
racking up four assists throughout the season
"It has been a great experience playing in the ISL
and I would like to thank Jamshedpur FC and the coach for giving me the opportunity,” Barla said in an interview with indiansuperleague.com
“I have gained a lot of confidence playing in the ISL
and I want to achieve even more this season,” he said
Since Jamil’s appointment in December, the Men of Steel delivered several spirited performances, climbing up the table and staying in the playoff race.
However, difficult results in their final phase of the league games saw the 2021-22 ISL Shield winners finish outside the top six for the second consecutive season.
“I’m a local boy from Jamshedpur FC, and we will try to get results and make the fans happy this season,” Barla stated.
Having risen through the ranks at Jamshedpur FC, Barla understands the fans' sentiments and the importance of delivering results.
The upcoming season is pivotal not only for the team but also for Barla, who is determined to make a significant impact. He sees this as a crucial chance to advance his career and move closer to his ultimate goal of representing the national team.
“I was in the Tata Football Academy for four years. Back then, we used to play practice matches against ISL teams, which boosted our motivation and helped us grow as a player. Now that I'm playing in the ISL, it's a great feeling,” he said.
“I want to do well this season and improve further in the seasons to come. My goal is to play for the Indian national team,” Barla commented.

Key global players are expected to surpass a combined market share of 68% by 2020
according to recent research from Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables
‘Global wind turbine OEM market share forecasts H1 2019’
industry witnessed consolidation among the western turbine OEMs
Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables expects consolidation to creep into the Chinese market
as Tier II/III Chinese OEMs begin to lose ground in competitive auctions
Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables principal analyst
said: “We expect Vestas to retain its market leadership position in 2019
the 3 OEMs will capture more than 50% market share this year
are popular due to product reliability and track record
strengthening domestic market share in China to more than 50%
Africa and APAC will see both positioned in the top 5 global OEM list.”
“European pioneers Enercon and Nordex swing back into action with increased order activity over the last 12 months
paving the way for a strong performance in 2020/21 outside of core European markets with cost-optimised platforms
both may face an uphill battle when it comes to competing with their larger western peers.”
SGRE and MHI Vestas control the global offshore sector with more than 60% cumulative share expected by 2023
while GE must focus on commercialising the Halide-X 12MW-220 in forthcoming auctions in order to win market share from competitors
MingYang and Envision – command more than 90% of the market
leaving just under 10% for other turbine OEMs
With a strong regional presence in Guangdong - the largest offshore province in China and responsible for successful positioning of the 5.XMW platform - MingYang now resides among the leading turbine OEMs
“GE’s 3 Haliade 150 turbines became operational in Fujian
China in 2018 and the company’s plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Jieyang
Guangdong indicate serious intentions in a market dominated by domestic OEMs
“Goldwind remains the China’s undisputed leader due to track record
product reliability and supply chain dependability
Envision emerged as a shining star in the Chinese OEM competitive landscape thanks to a focus on low wind and ultra-low wind speed segments,” continued Mr
“SGRE is working to revive its prospects in the U.S
before the federal renewable electricity production tax credit (PTC) fades
while NextEra and Invenergy are maintaining their historical preference for GE as a turbine supplier
Vestas has been successful with utilities and IPPs from both the U.S
which is illustrated in large volumes of turbines being shipped to MidAmerican
“Vestas dominates the EMEARC region due to geographic diversification and a strong presence in emerging market auctions
will strengthen the company’s presence in the region
Nordex has been relatively successful in Germany over the last 5 years
largely attributed to their focus on low wind turbines N117/2400
They are likely to repeat their low wind success story with the new Delta4000/5000 N149 series
“After 2 painful transition years in India
Suzlon and SGRE have captured over 50% of the market auction volume
while a surge in market demand will create room for new players
Vestas returned to India with 1.1GW in orders since 2017
a record for the company’s history in the country
thanks to local blade manufacturing,” added Mr

https://twitter.com/johnbarlabjpKochi: Union minister of state for minority affairs John Barla had an interaction with Syro-Malabar Church major archbishop Cardinal Mar George Alencherry on Tuesday
Barla termed the interaction fruitful and said
“Christians are safe under Narendra Modi’s regime.”
The meet-up was part of the BJP-led Centre’s Christian outreach programme in the state
The meet-up also comes at a time when Cardinal Alencherry faced a setback in Supreme Court
The apex court had dismissed his plea to quash the criminal cases against him in the controversial land deal case
Barla in his three-day visit to Kerala has been visiting many Christian faith leaders
Barla will meet the Rubber Board chairman later in the day
It may be noted that the Rubber Board chairman met Thalassery archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany
who was in limelight for his apparent pro-BJP remarks
Pamplany had stated that the BJP would get a Lok Sabha member from Kerala if it hiked the price of procured rubber to Rs 300 per kg
many church leaders in the state recently made statements hinting at the community’s openness to consider BJP as a political party like any other party despite the anti-minority narrative
The new development comes at this juncture
