SALT LAKE CITY — Aden Batar understands the weight of leaving behind all that you’ve ever known. “It’s not easy to leave your home country and to go to a strange country,” Batar shared Tuesday. Currently the Director of Migration and Refugee Services for Catholic Community Services, Batar and his family fled Somalia during civil war in the early 90s to seek a new life in Utah. “I never thought I was going to leave my home country, but due to the loss of family members and the loss of my own child — I never second guessed,” he said. Batar is now facing another challenge as his organization's refugee resettlement program that helped his own family resettle is cutting back on their services. Catholic Community Services is no longer receiving the federal funding needed and was forced to let go of over 25 of its staff members. They've also had to cancel resettlement flights for people who were all set to come to Utah. “This is the first time I’m seeing such a situation happening to our program,” Batar explained. Utah food banks brace for funding cuts while still being in dark about what's being cut: He said that more than 60 percent of the group's funding comes from the federal government, with the rest through donations and local money. Dan Johnson, the Interim Executive Director of the Cache Refugee Immigrant Connection, said they are seeing similar cuts to staff and grants. Johnson shared how they had to cancel flights for over 10 refugee families who were on their way to Utah. “It’s been one thing after another,” he said. “The thing is, you look at it and go, ‘What’s next?’ There’s such uncertainty.” Batar promises to continue to serve who they can. “Of course, we’re not closing down our doors," he said. "We’re winding down our services.” highly curated editorial content brings attention to hidden gems When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person Share LinkThe Beautiful Cafe Tucked Away In An Indiana Wildlife Refuge Most People Don’t Know AboutBatar Cafe located in Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge offers a unique and elegant dining experience in a beautiful natural setting Batar Cafe is open seasonally from mid-March to mid-December Batar/Facebook This leaves you with plenty of time to plan your adventure; no matter what part of the Hoosier State you find yourself in you're sure to find the wildlife refuge to be lovely even without the added luxury of Batar It doesn't matter which part of the restaurant you sit in; it's all pretty amazing Batar/Facebook Enjoy all sorts of delights from baked goodies to delectable finger foods It's a wonderful option if you're a fan of curling up with a good book.. LOCAL NEWS 10:10 PM | Updated: Apr 2 BY DAN RASCON AND MARY CULBERTSON, KSL TV SALT LAKE CITY — Catholic Community Services in Utah is scrambling to keep its refugee resettlement program running after a federal funding freeze The program leaders say it may be out of money by the end of April “Catholic Community Services is in a dire situation right now for the funding,” said Director of Migration and Refugees Services Aden Batar “Families will lose their housing; they will become homeless We have already lost 25 staff members we had to lay off.” Batar said the program is hoping those funds will be freed up by the Trump administration by April 20 the program will have no way to continue supporting the 300 families it oversees right now “We paid their rent this month, but we don’t know how we will pay their rent next month,” Batar said. “We have not experienced what we are experiencing for 45 years that we have been doing this services.” says he doesn’t know how his family would have made it in Utah without Catholic Community Services really appreciative of the service,” he said to KSL TV you find yourself very hard to deal with life the housing — that really makes a refugee’s life easier.” That’s why Batar is making a plea to the public for any kind of financial or volunteer help with the refugees they have “We ask our community to help us,” he said Catholic Community Services announced its program is now “winding down” — starting now it will be gradually decreasing its caseload into mid-2026 The program called on its community to “stand in solidarity” with refugee neighbors in the transition Donations to help Catholic Community Services continue its support for refugees can be made in any amount online This article was updated with additional reporting after its initial publication Opening the Sadler’s Wells Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival Christian Rizzo’s Sakinan Gӧze Çӧp Batar (An Over-Protective Eye Always Gets Sand in It) is an experimental solo piece from 2012 about journeys and the misdirection that life offers Arriving on a solitary figure seemingly ready to travel away with backpack prepared what unfolds over 50 minutes instead is a man who becomes increasingly encumbered by his life as the clean stage – once full of possibility – becomes cluttered with objects that begin an emotional weighing down There are three distinct phases to Rizzo’s show – performed by Kerem Gelebek – which slowly challenge the central character’s autonomy and feelings of contentment he slowly recognises the limits of both his body and the space that contains him the white square stage that he never moves beyond pushing his feet into the edges and corners of the performance range while not breaching the black border beyond moving his body across the floor at a low level ankles and knees to rotate and fit to find unexpected angles never jaunty but free with movement that is often casual and purposefully unfinished Gelebek leaps and unselfconsciously dances with no purpose it seems than his own introspection the feeling of being out of control and a little woozy begins to take hold as the dancer reacts to the nausea of rotation clutching his head to find a balance once again the beat becomes more intense and dangerous as shadow crosses and dominates the stage more completely and he seems no longer in possession of himself the dance area gradually fills with content items of clothing discarded by Gelebek at intervals carefully positioned around the stage to limit his freedom hemming him in as though the unpacking of his life pinions him in this place with possessions and roots a far cry from the man we thought was free at the start of mechanical clanks and air-based sounds that intrude into the soundscape are intercut with music and at the centre Gelebek deconstructs the box that he once sat on to produce a chair and plant extracting sides used to wall one side of the stage and a scattering of books that look increasingly like a home Unusual work is the substance of the Van Cleef and Arpels Dance Reflections Festival and while this piece is interesting in its unfolding there are perhaps far deeper meanings that never translate to the audience and its stated conclusion on the meaning of exile remains elusive Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" SALT LAKE CITY — Church communities throughout Utah are concerned over the policy changes regarding immigration ordered by President Trump praying the situation changes as they continue following the law The letter sent Tuesday was in response to the Trump administration's directive that will allow federal officers to enforce immigration policies in locations such as schools and other sensitive areas Father Rogelio Felix-Rosas notes the migrant community is significant within his congregation at St “They have a beautiful connection with the history of this church,” said Felix-Rosas He also directs the Hispanic ministry for the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City and said the bishop is working hard to find direction for those affected by the new policies but at the same time we are educating people from our churches Aden Batar came to the United States as a refugee from Somalia “I was resettled here through Catholic Community Services and this is my way of paying back,” said Batar He’s now served for the same organization that helped him find home here for over a quarter-century “This is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had in my career,” Batar said When he heard of changes to immigration policy under the new Trump administration “If the federal agencies are going to those areas where the community is trusted where else are people going to go?” said Batar Batar says they will continue to follow the law and continue to pray over the situation we will do whatever we can to help them,” said Batar Aden Batar had just completed law school when war broke out in Somalia 1990 He and his young family were forced to flee from place to place to escape violence Aden’s decision to leave Somalia resulted from a tragic accident suffered injuries from a spilled pot of boiling water Aden could not access medical care in the war-torn country Determined that nobody else in his family would die Aden and his wife chose to immigrate to the United States Aden and his family were among the first Somalis to be resettled in Utah He and his son Jamal came to StoryCorps to talk about those early days ”NirvanaVEVO” by Chris Zabriskie from the album Undercover Vampire Policeman Jamal Batar (JB) and Aden Batar (AB) Transcript JB: How did you get by when you first arrived Some days I wasn’t seeing you and your brother JB: What were the toughest parts of adjusting to life in Utah but then you come home and you’re another person AB: I lived in this community almost close to half of my life Survivors and friends Thomas Grace and Chic Canfora share memories of May 4 when National Guardsmen opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University Dan Bigley tells his daughter Acacia Bigley about living through a bear attack that blinded him “There was no place to buy food … everything was in chaos.” In addition to a wife and baby to provide for Batar was also caring for his widowed mother and elderly grandparents He and his family would move to one part of the country only for the war to spread to that area — forcing them to flee again Though the war would eventually lead to the displacement of over two million people there were no services for the internally displaced at that time His hometown of Baidoa was known as janaay in Somali — just a letter off from the original Arabic jannah the towers of mosques pointing like fingers towards the sky He’d grown up there among a large extended family of aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews and cousins passing the days playing soccer with his friends burned by an accident in an overcrowded home “There was nothing we could do to save him,” Batar says “There was no adequate medical care at the time None of the hospitals were functioning; they were only taking care of wounds and so forth who knows firsthand how emigration can be like a sort of death a baby boy just a few months old — wouldn’t survive the journey “Let me try the road to see what it looks like you know that I didn’t make it.” But if he reached safety he would get her and their surviving child out of there It took him several weeks to make the journey to Kenya There were military roadblocks and he had to pass through different tribal lands but he knew multiple dialects and pretended to be a local He mostly traveled under the cover of night And so he bribed his way into the country and then rode in on a truck transporting livestock he found a military radio and sent word back to his wife who was waiting anxiously at a relative’s home outside Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu he arranged for a small airplane that was departing from Mogadishu to pluck his wife and their baby son out of the war-town country and bring them to Kenya “That day was the happiest in my life,” says Batar the family was on another plane — this one was headed to Salt Lake City Emigration often means giving up a language Thirty years later and the world continues to struggle with many refugee crises. Somalia, which still grapples with outbreaks of violence, is plagued by drought and hunger; people stream out of the land, which is, itself, home to refugees from Yemen other African countries and the internally displaced The United States’ sudden withdrawal from Afghanistan triggered a governmental and economic collapse that continues to create waves of refugees today where conflict with Russia has spurred millions to leave There’s the Rohingya who have been victims of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar Since 1975, the United States has opened its doors to over three million refugees. Of those who made their way to the Intermountain West, most ended up in Arizona, Colorado and Utah. Today, Utah is home to approximately 60,000 refugees and the state ranks in the top half nationally for refugee resettlement But refugee resettlement plummeted under President Donald Trump and Utah’s numbers reflected the national trend the state took in 1,555 refugees; in the four years that followed In 2021, the Biden administration raised the national cap on refugees to 125,000 The amount of those who have actually managed to resettle in the United States in recent years meaning that 80 percent of the spaces allocated went unaccounted for Experts say that the Trump administration’s policies decimated the country’s immigration infrastructure and continues to impact our nation’s ability to absorb newcomers It was estimated that the state would take in about 300 refugees from Ukraine All of Utah’s refugees pass through Salt Lake County Many refugees end up congregating in West Valley City or western Salt Lake City where they find a sympathetic ear and a helping hand in Batar who knows firsthand how emigration can be like a sort of death — how leaving one’s country isn’t just about leaving the land and the family that sprung from it he’d met some folks from Utah State University who had come to Baidoa to do some agricultural projects with locals Batar had been studying English at the time and was keen to practice with native speakers; he’d spent some time with the USU crew But he was unprepared for what he saw when he got off the plane: a land so different from his own we didn’t come in wintertime,” he jokes today Catholic Community Services helped resettle the family Case manager Lina Smith remembers the first time she saw him in a conference room with his extended family She could tell he was the backbone of the family despite his youth (he was still in his 20s) that he was “the leader of the group.” She also noticed immediately a silent strength about him Batar’s first job in Logan was at a factory no call to prayer setting the rhythm of his day punctuating his worldly concerns and helping him keep his thoughts trained on God “He knew what they needed because he had just gone through it He knew what they needed without them telling him.” He worked hard during the day and took college classes at night Smith asked Batar to serve as an interpreter “He was very confident but had such a kindness imparting this same quiet strength to those around him She soon offered him a job as a case manager Batar accepted and started the job immediately beginning with a group of Somali families who came to the office that very day His deep understanding of what it means to flee one’s home and to find oneself in a new country enabled Batar to meet refugees’ needs “He knew what they needed because he had just gone through it,” says Smith “He knew what they needed without them telling him.” This wasn’t just true of the Somalis whom Batar helped resettle but of the Bosnians Vietnamese and Sudanese who characterized immigration to Utah in the ’90s working with refugees has been part of an attempt to pay back “this community that welcomed me and gave me my life back and provided all the support my kids and my family needed.”  Finding employment is one of the most frustrating aspects of the resettlement process says Kearstin Cantrell of Catholic Community Services Refugees are eager to immediately start reinventing themselves and building a life here but have to jump through many hoops to get authorization to work But Batar and other staff  — many of whom are former clients the organization managed 607 resettlement cases; most of which were families he’s overseen the building of a mosque and the creation of a Muslim cemetery is an engineer who graduated from Columbia University and lives next door to him Batar’s other son has a bachelor’s degree and is working Batar’s two daughters are educated as well and one is becoming a pharmacist — something that would have been impossible had Batar stayed in Somalia about his first home that are irreplaceable Batar lost his father when he was just five years old and there — in his hometown of Baidoa — everyone had known his father The elder Batar was legendary — he’d been one of the city’s first police officers after the Italians left Somalia And everywhere the young Batar went people recognized that he was his father’s son he left behind all those people who knew his family and his history it’s Batar who is legendary — known for his calm This story appears in the March issue of Deseret Magazine. President Biden has raised the cap on annual refugee admissions undoing extensive restrictions put in place under the Trump administration As soon as next month three new refugee families are scheduled to arrive in Utah signaling a change that many in the community have been waiting for Aden Batar is the Director of Migration and Refugee Services for Catholic Community Services of Utah He helps guide refugees with finding a job but recently he’s been having to help people wait “We’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Batar said There are people in Utah who have been waiting for years for their spouse The drop in refugee admissions in the state is significant more than 13,000 refugees resettled in Utah In 2020 that number dropped to less than 200 Batar said the drop has repercussions across the state “Here in Utah our businesses heavily rely on the refugee’s workforce There are a number of employers who are struggling to fill a lot of positions that are available.” Batar said his message to Utahns is to not be afraid of refugees in your neighborhood or in your children’s schools “They appreciate anyone who gives them this opportunity so how can they hurt the country that gives them the opportunity to live again.” Batar knows how important the work is first hand His was the first Somali refugee family to settle in Utah and he hopes to see the whole program grow over the coming months To donate by check, phone, or other method, see our More Ways to Give page. select few ahead of the rest with its PathMaker summer research program aims to diversify the field of biomedical research by adding competent and qualified students from racial and ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged rural and frontier areas across Utah and the West The program just got an official nod from the National Cancer Institute’s Youth Enjoy Science Research Education Program which gave Huntsman and its PathMaker program a $2.5 million award to further engage Utah students and their teachers in cancer research “A lot of these students have really compelling stories, tough circumstances they’ve grown up in,” said Donald Ayer senior director of cancer training and career enhancement at Huntsman Cancer Institute and professor of oncological science at the University of Utah “This provides an opportunity for young students who wouldn’t normally have these types of opportunities.” which Ayer said starts to wane as they leave middle school or junior high whose minds might bring a different perspective,” he said adding that he hopes the experience gets kids used to the idea that research careers can be interesting Following in her older brother and sisters’ footsteps said she wants to do well in school because her parents fled civil war in Somalia and “sacrificed everything for us.” the PathMaker program gave 17-year-old Laila her first-ever chance to work in a functioning research lab and she loved it adding that she learned a lot about the processes of a working lab She was able to participate in adenovirus work at a lab run by renowned neurosurgeons at the U “I went into this thinking I would be in a little lab but it was amazing doing the experiments and seeing the outcome,” Laila said even teens who are not interested in science to give themselves a chance to see what it is like Laila often reflects on the ultimate chance she got after her parents fled to America and said she “probably wouldn’t even be able to go to school” in Somalia “They wanted us to have a better life here,” Laila said “They didn’t want us to grow up with the war there wasn’t an option for an education and the jobs and opportunities that are here.” “I am grateful for my parents sacrificing all they had,” she said “I want to work hard and show them that what they did is really a good thing for us.” the PathMaker program has trained 44 Utah high school students including one who entered medical school this year The other five are still in high school in Utah The program has had students earn scholarships at Duke Ayer said participation in PathMaker “definitely helps their application status.” Students selected for the highly competitive program spend 10 weeks living in supervised dorms on campus at the U They work at various labs and participate in professional development activities as well as attend lectures and talks from researchers from the field of medicine “We’re really trying to prepare these students for careers in some area of biomedicine,” Ayer said He said there’s projected to be “a pretty dramatic shortage” of medical oncologists in the near future the field just isn’t as diverse as it needs to be to represent the demographics of the country and the patients being served “We need to diversify the biomedical research workforce,” Ayer said A recent analysis of 500 Utah medical students indicates that eight identify as Hispanic or Latino none were American Indian or African American and one identified as native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander despite these being significant minority groups in the state “A lot of it is about opportunity and exposure you have a lot of advantages that a lot of other people don’t,” Ayer said adding that PathMaker gives students access to “bona fide projects that are challenging and require them to learn new skills and think analytically.” The online application process for PathMaker opens in December and after extensive statewide outreach the program managers will select 10 students to participate next summer “I wish I had this kind of experience when I was a high school student The recent funding award will allow the program to expand to include more students in different aspects perhaps an abbreviated version of the program as well as extend it to teachers who might have more of an impact on a greater number of students “We want to get them excited about science early hopefully they stay in science for a career,” Ayer said For more information, visit uofuhealth.utah.edu/huntsman/research-areas/cancer-health-equity/programs/pathmaker/ The U.S. State Department recently released a list of 19 “welcoming communities” in the U.S where Afghan citizens fleeing the Taliban are recommended to settle once their paperwork is finalized and visas are granted “We’re still in a planning phase right now,” said Aden Batar director of migration and refugee services for the Catholic Community Services’ Utah branch “But there are a couple cases that we’ve approved and we expect them to arrive in the next few weeks.” Batar said between Catholic Community Services and the International Rescue Committee the Beehive State should expect a “couple hundred” newcomers in the coming weeks or months “The difficulty is we don’t know how many the State Department or Department of Homeland Security are planning to send on their way here to Utah,” Batar said “We’re expecting to see more families start to arrive in the next three to six weeks or so so right now we’re gearing up to welcome (them),” said Natalie El-Deiry executive director of the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City “My understanding is that they’re still processing people on site on the military bases.” The majority of Afghans being resettled in the U.S Those in the first group have been granted a special immigrant visa These people likely meet the qualifications for a special immigrant visa Embassy did not have time to process their paperwork during the chaotic evacuation of Afghanistan The parolees — a term Batar stressed simply means the U.S is interested in giving an individual humanitarian assistance — will be vetted just like refugees and eventually granted asylum The rest are eligible for Priority 2 designation meaning they don’t meet the minimum time or employment requirements for a special immigrant visa but still worked in some capacity with U.S contractor or non-governmental organization there was an initial vetting or screening process for individuals that would be designated into one of those three categories,” El-Deiry said “I don’t imagine there’s a lot of people that are falling through the cracks The State Department estimates 123,000 It remains unclear how many Afghans will be granted visas and be resettled in the U.S “I don’t know exactly what the makeup is of the 120,000 and I think they’re still working on an individual case-by-case basis to see what that looks like,” El-Deiry told the Deseret News The vetting process has come under scrutiny from some elected officials who have expressed concern over where the refugees are coming from and a lack of faith in President Joe Biden’s administration “This is a dangerous part of the world, we know we have a lot of dangerous people who are there that want to do the United States harm,” South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem told Dakota News Now “We do not want them coming here unless we know they are an ally and a friend and that they don’t want to destroy this country.” In his 25 years of working with Catholic Community Services — a span where tens of thousands of refugees have resettled in Utah — Batar said he doesn’t know of a single person his agency has interacted with that had ties to a criminal or terrorist organization anyone who they don’t know who they are .. no one would be able to sneak in through that system,” he said we have over 60,000 refugees living here.” Anyone wishing to participate in the country’s refugee admission program is screened by the FBI we will be sending their info to the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department of Public Safety they will apply for an ID and we will be working with them for a period of time,” he said staff members will be working one-on-one with them telling the Deseret News that “the refugee resettlement process is one of the most robust processing systems that exists “With the evacuations and the expedited scenarios that people were going through that process is a little different right now but the standards are the same,” she said As the chaos in Afghanistan was unfolding, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox penned a letter to Biden expressing the Beehive State’s willingness to accept refugees fleeing the war “When tragedy occurs somewhere on the other side of the world Utahns are always quick to show concern and willingness to help out,” Cox said in a prepared statement adding that his office received “countless calls and emails from individuals businesses and organizations offering to do something to support the efforts to bring Afghan refugees to Utah.” And on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Utah Sen Mitt Romney said the country has a “moral responsibility” to accept refugees from Afghanistan telling Jake Tapper: “I am very pleased that we’re going to have individuals that come to our country that can contribute to America.” “Utah has a long history of welcoming refugees,” El-Deiry said Utah has welcomed around 1,000 individuals a year.” El-Deiry said they will be happy to find an already well-established Afghan community along the Wasatch Front “We’ve actually been welcoming refugees from Afghanistan for some time now and there is a fairly large population of Afghan community members who live here,” she said “It’s just adding to the fabric of an existing community.” Utah — Imam Habib Sarfraz commutes up to three hours a day to perform his duties to Utah's Muslim community he has to be here for five daily prayers," Sarfraz told FOX 13 News in a recent interview at the Khadeeja mosque It's where the religious leader can find affordable housing "The cost of housing as we know is skyrocketing," said Aden Batar the president of the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake So to keep the imam closer to the community Society trustee Ghulam Patel said they came up with an idea: "Let's just build a house." So the community is putting a modular home on property the Islamic of Society of Greater Salt Lake owns near the Khadeeja Islamic Center prefabricated home was placed on a foundation on Friday "Imam plays a major role into our religion and so.. we are building a house for the Islamic Society to use for the imam so that way it’s easier for him to go to the mosque," said Batar "This is a nice gesture from the community to say that 'Hey The Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake has so far raised over $100,000 to help pay for the home. The entire project is expected to cost about $400,000. They are fundraising and asking for community donations to help pay for the remainder of the costs. To donate to the effort, click here Utah's Muslim community is growing in size Patel recalled only 120 Muslims in the state in the 1980s "I would guess we are close to 100,000 now." Batar said they would like to eventually build a community center next to the Khadeeja Islamic Center "We have seen a lot of refugees that are coming from Muslim countries just a lot of international students coming from Middle East and other parts of the world So we want to have a welcome center," he said "Non-Muslims can also come and join us and learn about Islam and we can have that friendship." Somalia for the United States in 1994 lack of health care and myriad other barriers to safety millions of refugees leave home each year seeking a better life in a different country As of 2017, more than 2 million Somalis have been displaced, in one of the world's worst refugee crises, according to the United Nations refugee agency staying in the country became virtually impossible for his young family "We had to flee our home due to heavy artillery fire," Aden says Aden's decision to leave Somalia was ultimately influenced by a family tragedy suffered injuries from a household accident involving boiled water when he was 2 Aden could not take him to a hospital for treatment where he became one of the first Somalis to resettle in the state of Utah "I didn't want anyone else to die," he says In a StoryCorps conversation with his son Jamal Aden remembers the difficulty of starting a new life his son faced his own difficulties — adjusting to a new country Jamal was 2 years old when his family arrived in Utah "It's always just a juggling act," Jamal says but then you come home and you're another person some of Jamal's classmates looked at him with scorn and somebody threw a milk carton at me [and] said the Batar family was determined to make a new life in the U.S Aden became the director of Immigration and Refugee Resettlement at Catholic Community Services of Utah It is the same organization that resettled him and his family 25 years ago Aden hopes to be treated the same as his neighbors "I lived in this community close to half of my life," Aden says to Jamal I want people to look at us as human beings his identity is not just that of a refugee Audio produced for Morning Edition by Von Diaz and Camila Kerwin Become an NPR sponsor Peace is the most important thing you can have a lifelong Muslim who is director of immigration and refugee resettlement for Catholic Community Services of Utah “Please excuse me,” he said as he paused to compose himself one of several times he did so during a recent interview in his Salt Lake City office “These things … are so … important … in my life ….” He was speaking of a Somali woman who came to Utah in 2002 as a refugee along with her six children which coordinates involvement and services from other Utah faith groups and charitable community services the family was provided with a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment and food and was assigned to a case-worker to help them apply for documentation Medicaid and financial assistance while introducing them to educational opportunities for the children and job opportunities for the adults “It can be overwhelming for people who are here to escape war and tragedy,” Batar said the family was finally left to themselves in their new apartment When Batar and others returned to the family the next day they found that they had pulled all of the mattresses from the beds and brought them together in the front room of the apartment “This room is enough for us,” the mother told Batar her voice edged with emotion and filled with appreciation “You can bring someone else to live in the other rooms.” “Unless you have been through what these people have been through you have no idea what a blessing it is to be here,” Batar said He paused and closed his eyes hard against the tears welling up in his eyes “My creator has blessed me,” he said simply “How can I not give back and share those same blessings with others?” The blessings to which Batar refers began 20 years ago when he and his wife were trying to raise their two young sons while civil war swirled dangerously around them in Mogadishu I stayed in my country because I was sure things would get better,” Batar says After four years of hearing bullets being fired and seeing dead people lying in the streets I realized that the only way I could protect my family was for us to flee our country.” But to fly his family there would cost far more money than he had with roaming tribal bands always on the lookout for rivals “I couldn’t take my family with me when I fled to Kenya,” Batar said “I wasn’t sure I could protect them on the journey “That was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life … to tell my wife ….” His voice trailed off again the fingers of one hand pressed to his eyes I’ll find a way to get you and our sons out of here.’ ” With only the clothes he was wearing and $200 hidden and carefully stitched into his trousers He was stopped and searched numerous times His watch and other personal items were taken But thanks to the kindness of others who provided him with food and shelter along the way he arrived in Nairobi three and one-half weeks after he left Mogadishu with his $200 still hidden in his clothing “I was not able to communicate with my wife at all during that time,” he remembers Eventually he was able to use a military radio to contact his wife through a neighbor back in Mogadishu “I promised her that I would find a way to get her and our sons to Kenya,” he said It didn’t take him long to make good on that promise Through circumstances that he insists were completely providential he met a man who was the pilot of a little plane that transported medicine from Nairobi to Mogadishu for the Doctors Without Borders organization Batar told his story to the pilot and then he pressed his much-traveled $200 into the pilot’s hand “I know you could get much more than this from others but this is all I have,” he told the pilot “That was the best day of my life,” Batar says simply it was time to start building a new life somewhere some years earlier as a student at Utah State University and who started working with Catholic Community Services “I didn’t know anything about Utah,” Batar said All I wanted was a place that was safe for my family “Peace is the most important thing you can have,” he continued I’ll give up everything I have for peace.” Arrangements were made for the family to come to Utah where they have sunk in their roots and become “more American than Somali,” Batar says “We have three children who were born here,” he said “Our two boys who were born in Somalia are both students at the University of Utah They don’t remember anything about Somalia But they are more American than anything else.” citizen in 1999 and boasts that he has voted in every election since then we have many friends who are LDS and nobody has a problem with any of that Everyone sees you as a human being regardless of your background.” 20 years after being a refugee from a war-torn country himself he is at the forefront of welcoming other refugees to Utah and introducing them to the peaceful promise of life in America Catholic Community Services settles around 600 refugees in Salt Lake County,” Batar said “This includes a large number of children who are coming without parents — either their parents have been killed or they were neglected or abandoned or trafficked There are only about 10 programs around the United States that will take these children We have about 68 refugee foster care children in our program now.” Batar describes Utah as “a caring community" that is filled with compassion and willing to give and work on behalf of suffering refugees government groups — and lives are blessed as a result,” he said “If we ask each (Catholic) parish to take care of a family the whole parish volunteers to help that family how to get jobs — everything they need to know to survive in a place that is very different from the places they left “We take them to (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Day Saints's) humanitarian center where they learn certain skills and get training We get them into housing subsidized by the state Doctors and dentists from different faith groups volunteer their services with the goal to have each family independent and completely on their own within two years.” Batar draws heavily from his own refugee experience in working with refugees new to this country and he encourages staff members and volunteers with similar experiences to do likewise forget about looking behind you — you can’t do anything about that,” he said I tell them they need to take advantage of that — for themselves and for their children Which sounds a lot like the advice he gives to his children “I tell them every day to remember that journey we took to get here,” he said “I tell them that I took that journey for them there is a tear in his eye when he says that Email: jwalker@deseretnews.com SALT LAKE CITY — When Aden Batar fled war-torn Somalia in 1992 he spent three days riding among cattle in a livestock trailer en route to Kenya where he would eventually reunite with his wife and child in his first trip to his homeland in more than 20 years eventually landing at an airport in Mogadishu That alone represented remarkable progress for a country attempting to rebuild after decades of conflict who along with his young family were the first Somali refugees to be resettled in Utah “It was a blessing and an opportunity to see some of my relatives while I still could,” said Batar who is director of immigration and refugee resettlement for Catholic Community Services of Utah It was also heartening to him that education is considered such a high priority for both boys and girls We didn’t have that many when we had the old country,” Batar said referring to the period before Somalian President Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown in the civil war in the early 1990s But the militias were indiscriminate about laying waste to buildings in Mogadishu It didn’t seem to matter whether a structure was a place of worship “It was unbelievable what the militias did to the city It was like World War II the way the buildings were destroyed,” he said “That whole area needs to be rebuilt from ground zero.” While few landmarks from Batar’s life before the war remain the anguish of the death of his 2-year-old son Batar frequently moved his family about Mogadishu in an attempt to keep them safe from warring factions They were internally displaced “urban refugees” who shared living space with other families Mohamed was severely burned when he tripped into a pot of boiling water He only lived five days after that,” Batar said Batar and his wife made plans to leave Somalia for Kenya telling his wife to remain in Mogadishu until he could contact her With just only a few hundred dollars in his pocket traveling part of the time among cattle loaded in a livestock trailer Batar was stopped by police who threatened to return him to Somalia He pleaded with the officers to let him continue The man who was helping him escape bribed the officers and Batar eventually made his way to Nairobi He went to the airport and introduced himself to a charter pilot and told him his story people would pay thousands of dollars to get their family out He was able to bring my family for $200,” Batar said his wife and two children (their third child was born in Kenya) The family spent two years in Cache County while Batar attended Utah State University and worked nights at a fitness machine manufacturing company Batar had graduated from Somalia National University with a law degree Batar was hired by Catholic Community Services in refugee resettlement Batar said his primary goals are to help refugees successfully adjust into their new lives find meaningful employment and encourage children and adults alike to make the most of educational opportunities Life in Utah is a world away from the violence and destruction that was commonplace in Somalia But Batar was pleased to report that life is improving there That’s not what I saw when I left the country Where before there were few opportunities for women As Utah pauses to observe World Refugee Day on Saturday Batar contemplated the collective path of refugees That status means a person has been displaced from his or her home because of war Those fortunate enough to be resettled face many hurdles learning a new language and adjusting to a vastly different culture and social mores “You have to accept whatever challenge comes your way,” Batar said softly laughing as he described his helm of the almost four-year search for answers into the disappearance of William Tyrrell has made a move on new information received as a part of their renewed investigation of bushland around Kendall All articles from our website & appThe digital version of Today's PaperBreaking news alerts direct to your inboxInteractive Crosswords Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueThe forensic search for evidence into the mysterious disappearance of William Tyrrell is now into its third week back at bushland surrounding Benaroon Drive sent a search team into bushland at Cedars Loggers Lane and Batar Creek Road in Batar Creek on June 27 confirming this was a new specific area of interest outside the perimeter of the original search zone It is just four kilometres from where William vanished which includes a contingent from the Public Order and Riot Squad returned to Kendall on June 13 to execute a renewed search for information into the then three-year-old’s disappearance from his grandmother’s home on Benaroon Drive in September 2014 William would have celebrated his seventh birthday on June 26 View +31 PhotosPhotos: Ivan SajkoDet Ch Insp Jubelin addressed the media on-site at 1pm on June 27 confirming a new area of interest is being looked at as a result of information uncovered through one of their lines of inquiry “Today we commenced a search as a part of our ongoing investigation into the disappearance of William Tyrrell in bushland near the intersection of Batar Creek Road and Cedars Loggers Lane,” he said “This location is approximately four kilometres away from William’s disappearance and where we’ve been conducting a forensic search for the past two and a half weeks “The reason why we are searching this very specific area of bushland is a result of information we’ve uncovered in the course of the investigation Arrest or inquest: Strike Force Rosann will be ready beyond reasonable doubt that William Tyrrell vanished as a result of human intervention.“We are looking for any information any exhibits relating to William’s disappearance.” Det Chief Insp Jubelin went as far as saying they are interested in anyone with information relating to a person or vehicle seen in the area in 2014 or more recently and acting suspiciously or looking out of place to contact the Strike Force via CrimeStoppers Strike Force Rosann takes the search for evidence in relation to the disappearance of William Tyrrell to Batar Creek Road and Cedars Loggers Lane Photo: IVAN SAJKO.He would not disclose exactly what information they had received to shift the focus of the search to the fresh location but indicated the Strike Force has had the lead “for quite some time” The search operation also involves police and emergency services volunteers “The line of inquiry we are pursuing is what has brought us to this specific location We anticipate this search will take approximately two days “We are looking for anything that is foreign to the area Det Ch Insp Jubelin said earlier this week the thoughts of the Strike Force Rosann team were with William Tyrrell’s family “Our focus remains on providing his family with answers along with the search of bushland at Kendall “I want to thank the community for their ongoing support who have been very understanding and accommodating during the forensic search.” NSW SES members gather together equipment to help in the investigation Wingham and other areas on the Mid North Coast have been acknowledged for their assistance in the forensic search  at Benaroon Drive Det Ch Insp Jubelin said the assistance of local emergency services volunteers was imperative to the search operation.  such as the State Emergency Service and the Rural Fire Service provide a wide-range of services to the community and we are thankful for the skills they bring to our search,” Det Ch Insp Jubelin said.  “The volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge of the local area and an understanding of search operations which allow the areas to be cleared professionally without disturbing the underlying areas.” Search continues: Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin said the renewed search for William Tyrrell is deliberate and strategic and will position police with certainty should the matter result in conviction or at an inquest Photo: Tracey Fairhurst.More than 15,000 pieces of information and lines of inquiry over the last three and a half years brought the Strike Force back to where it all started on June 13 The new search is in its third week and has a forensic focus over an area of three square kilometres The investigation is expected to take four weeks.  The Strike Force want absolute certainty they have the investigation
