Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris was a convincing winner of the men’s race at the Dam tot Damloop on Sunday (22)
winning the 10-mile road race between Amsterdam and Zaandam in 44:51
His winning time puts him equal eighth on the world all-time list for the distance
The two-time world 5000m champion finished 27 seconds clear of three-time world 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei
while defending champion Mathew Kimeli was third in 45:44
Asayech Ayichew made it an Ethiopian double
winning the women’s race in 51:15 ahead of Kenya’s Gladys Chepkurui (51:34) and Ethiopia’s Mebrat Gidey (52:14)
Edris made an early break and had a lead of a few seconds over Cheptegei by the time he reached 5km in 14:02
He then increased his pace and hit 10km in 27:49
just 11 seconds shy of his PB for the distance
while Cheptegei trailed seven seconds behind
The pace dropped slightly over the final 6km but Edris continued to pull away from his opponenets
eventually crossing the line in 44:51 with Cheptegei taking second place in 45:18
just three seconds shy of his winning time from 2018
The women’s race was a bit closer throughout the first 10km as Ayichew and Chepkurui passed through 5km in 15:34 and 10km in 31:37
but the Ethiopian started to pull away during the closing stages and eventually crossed the line a comfortable winner in 51:15
Loice Chemnung emerged victorious from a deep and competitive field at the tRUNsylvania International 10K – a World Athletics Elite Label road race – to lead a Kenyan sweep of the top six places in 30:13
Compatriot Daniel Kinyanjui took the men’s title in a close finish in 27:08 as Morocco’s Hicham Amghar and Kenya’s Weldon Lagat finished just one second behind
A large pack of 12 women ran together through the first half in 15:19
but as the pace increased through the second half
Chemnung – who set a PB of 29:57 in Paris back in April – shook off the challenge of her last remaining opponent
Chepngetich was second in 30:19 and fellow Kenyan Judy Kemboi was third in 30:29
The men’s race played out in similar fashion as a pack of 12 men hit the half-way point in 13:38 before speeding up for the second half
Teenager Kinyanjui outkicked Amghar and Langat on the final straight to take victory in 27:08 with Amghar second (27:09) and Langat third (27:09)

Serving the tunnelling industry since 1969
The project upgrades the Apața–Cața railway section
100m tunnel boring machine joining three others for tunnel construction
part of the construction company AKTOR Group
has deployed its fourth tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Brasov-Sighisoara railway project
The project is one of the few in Europe to use four TBMs simultaneously
marking a major milestone in modernising Romania’s railway network
It is part of the vital Rhine-Danube European Corridor
This project upgrades the Apața – Cața section of the railway line
The newly activated TBM weighs 1,500 tonnes and is 100m long
The TBM has started boring through a hillside near Racoș
which has been tunnelling deep into the mountain for three months
The two newly activated TBMs will create two 5.1km tunnels heading toward Homorod
which consists of twin 6.9km tunnels toward Apața
working six days a week with one day set aside for maintenance
Brasov-Sighisoara railway project director Sotirios Koropoulis said: “The installation of a TBM and the start of boring are intricate tasks that require careful planning
and environmental responsibility in tunnel construction compared to traditional methods
“This approach not only opens up new infrastructure possibilities but also reduces the impact on surrounding areas.”
The Restoration of the Brasov – Simeria Railway Line project
The Brasov – Sighisoara section, including the Apata – Cata LOT 2 sub-section, has a budget of €573m and is co-financed by the European Union
This development is said to be AKTOR’s largest ongoing project in Romania
AKTOR Romania is also managing the restoration of two other sub-sections on the same railway line

The Romanian region that inspired Bram Stoker is more fairy tale than horror story
from castles to bike rides to picturesque villages
The 14th-century Bran Castle sits 20 miles south of Brașov
a medieval city with red-tiled roofs and gothic spires.Photograph by Jan Wlodarczyk
2024This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK).Transylvania’s name derives from a Latin term meaning ‘beyond the forest’
but it’s the destination’s gothic links most people have a hard time looking past
Over 125 years after Bram Stoker’s Dracula was first published
this region in central Romania still haunts the imagination as the homeland of the world’s most famous vampire
There are certainly enough impervious woods and forbidding fortresses to persuade the visitor that the whispers might be true; this is a mysterious land
where legends come alive and predators stalk in the darkness
and you’ll soon realise the medieval citadels in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains are more fairytale than horror story
while cultural projects are breathing life back into rural settlements
and some preserve customs that are much as they have been since the Middle Ages
An airport in the local hub of Brașov opened in 2023
making the region more accessible to international travellers
A thrice-weekly direct flight from London soon followed
as Count Dracula famously said to his guests
With its ancient culture and newfound energy
Transylvania is sure to draw anyone under its spell
a medieval hilltop citadel that has even better views of the forest-clad Carpathians
AfternoonReturn to Brașov for a lunch of beef cheek with black truffles at Sub Tâmpa. Afterwards, take a look at the red-capped clock tower of the Black Church
it earned its name from the scorch marks left by a fire that ravaged the town in 1689
including a 4,000-pipe organ and a collection of Ottoman rugs
The drive to Sighișoara takes less than two hours
It’s home to a community of Căldărari coppersmiths — Roma artisans whose handicrafts are displayed at stalls by the roadside
EveningTwilight is an atmospheric time in which to arrive at UNESCO-listed Sighișoara, the citadel believed to be the birthplace of Vlad Țepeș, with its cloud-piercing turrets cutting an ominous silhouette against the rapidly blackening sky. Check into Casa Georgius Krauss
a former nobleman’s residence that’s been turned into a boutique hotel
17th-century Saxon frescoes and painted ceilings were discovered
which have since been restored and are now preserved in the nine opulent guest rooms
Transylvanian dishes such as pork marinated in țuică (a local plum brandy) are served at the restaurant
as well as wines sourced from various local producers

vampire-themed attractions to sink your teeth into some of Sighișoara’s more authentic highlights
Start with a tour of the Clock Tower and History Museum of Sighișoara to learn about the Saxon craft guilds that once controlled the town
Then refuel at any of the colourful cafes lining Piaţa Cetăţii (‘Citadel Square’) — you’ll need a strong dose of caffeine for the leg-busting climb up the 176-step Scholar’s Stairway
It’s worth the walk to check out the Church on the Hill
it won a prize at the 2024 European Heritage Awards for the restoration of its ancient
If you’re visiting between February and November

With over 6,000 bears in Romania — the biggest population in Europe outside of Russia — there’s a high probability that you’ll soon spot the continent’s largest predators

the Saxons were invited to settle in Transylvania by Hungary’s King Géza II
who sought their help in defending his territory against Tatar and Turkish invasions

Bran Castle
The Irish writer Bram Stoker was certainly not far from the mark when he chose this region of endless woodlands
Gothic castles as the setting for his classic novel
In Transylvania, cobblestoned Saxon towns like Braşov, Sighişoara and Sibiu – still partly wrapped in their old defensive walls – emerge on the horizon like oases in a medieval folk tale
attest to a long-held formidable natural boundary
Here, where ruins and old traditions remain
visitors are free to enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery
and take in a corner of the continent that still retains more than a wisp of mystery
We’ve collected the 15 best things to do while in Transylvania.
Thanks to Dracula, Bran Castle reigns as Romania’s best-known tourist attraction – though connections to Stoker’s fictional vampire or the historical Wallachian prince
your first glimpse of this spectacular fortress-castle
rising above the town on a rocky promontory
Climb the conical towers to admire views over thick forest and stroll through creaky-floored rooms furnished with bearskin rugs and 19th-century antiques
take a peek at the small Bran Village Museum
but you’ll find some original items found in the castle on display
Detour: Commonly paired with Bran Castle on day trips from Braşov, nearby Râşnov Fortress (Cetatea Râşnov) is famous for a Hollywood-style “Râşnov” sign that is visible for miles around
Its Saxon-influenced core features colorful old houses straight out of Hansel and Gretel; it has one of Romania’s best restaurant scenes; and a curtain of high mountains on all sides
Braşov is best enjoyed on an aimless stroll
walking the picturesque streets that radiate off the main square
but don’t miss out on The Black Church (Biserica Neagră)
This must-see attraction dates from the late 14th century and is the country’s largest Gothic church (the bell tower stands 64m/213ft high)
Hike or take a cable car to the summit of Mt Tâmpa for the best views of the Old Town.
Planning tip: Leave the map at the hotel and get lost in the quirky backstreets of Braşov’s Old Town
where hidden alleyways reveal whole new parts of the city
The Alba Carolina Citadel (Cetatea Alba Carolina) encompasses many important sites
but the most impressive thing might just be the fortress itself
designed in a star-shaped style popularized by Vauban
the legendary military mastermind for France’s Louis XIV
The best way to appreciate the invincibility of its 3m (9ft)-thick walls is to stroll the perimeter.
Enter the citadel through the beautifully ornate
dominated up top by a horseback statue of the citadel’s namesake
Close by is the Muzeul Principia – archaeologists unearthed the largest fort in Roman Dacia at this site
peek inside Union Hall where the union between Romania and Transylvania was signed and sealed on 1 December 1918
The capital city of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca (often shortened to “Cluj”) is where quaint Transylvania collides with the modern world
Locals will proudly tell you Cluj is Romania’s most livable city.
Visit the Fine Art Museum for Romanian art and stunning interiors, enjoy traditional wooden houses and churches at the Ethnographic Park Romulus Vuia and relax in the sprawling Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden.
Planning tip: Cluj Guided Tours runs free walking tours in English daily at 11am and 6pm
as well as day trips around the region.
You simply can’t come to Transylvania and not visit one of the country’s grandest sights: Peleş Castle
a neo-Renaissance masterpiece commissioned by Romania’s first king in 1873
Beyond Iraqi carpets and alabaster biblical scenes
you’ll enter an Arms Room brimming with armor for men and their horses
Even more elaborate are the weapons in the Oriental Room
while the Portrait Room and Library offer a glimpse into the distinguished life of the royal couple
The latter has a secret passageway (which you will be shown if you opt for a longer tour involving the castle’s upper floor)
Planning tip: Visits are by a 40-minute guided tour
you may have to wait for a tour slot to open.
Head south 30km (19mi) from Cluj to find a secret underworld lurking below the meadowlands and chalky hills surrounding the city of Turda
Walking along 900m (2952ft) of cave corridors
you’ll discover a chapel with a salt-encrusted Jesus and Mary; salt miners used to pray here before their shift
When you see the hefty 1881 extraction apparatus
rent a boat on the salt lake and row around the bottom
Planning tip: Time your visit for a weekday
Combine it with a dip in the nearby salt lakes (Strand Durgău)
Sighişoara is home to an epic Citadel
Spend the day scrambling up the stairs and marveling at the centuries that have passed since the Saxons first constructed this mighty defensive barrier.
Planning tip: The best place for authentic souvenirs in the city is The Spoonman’s Shop near the entryway to the citadel across the street from Casa Vlad Dracul
Romania’s most incredible, jaw-dropping castle is Corvin
Whatever Corvin may lack in Dracula cred it makes up for with its spooky
Corvin was built on the ruins of an ancient stone fortress in the 15th century.
Architectural highlights include the late-Gothic Knights Hall
cannonballs and a bulky bronze of John Hunyadi
Look out for the faint checkerboard design painted on the tower
and lift your gaze to see a bronze of a medieval knight
placed at the top during a 19th-century restoration
operates a bear-rescue reserve: a visit here is an easy half-day trip from Braşov
Planning tip: As bears are driven from habitats by human encroachment and illegal logging
contacts with people have become more frequent
always ask about bear activity before setting out on a hike.
Known as “Transylvania’s pearl,” dainty Băile Tuşnad lies hidden among the volcano-made Harghita Mountains
Its heart is tiny Lake Ciucaş (Lacul Ciucaş)
fringed by tall evergreens with invigorating spas close to its shore.
Legends say in 1842 a shepherd boy’s festering ulcers were cured with a splash of Băile Tuşnad’s water
An industry took off only a few years later
thermally warmed waters and using them to target various ailments
Băile Tuşnad has walking trails in bracing
Detour: Băile Tuşnad is also a good base to visit remote
Sibiu is the coolest Romanian city you’ve maybe never heard of
The formal capital of Saxon-dominated Transylvania (still proudly wearing its Saxon name of Hermannstadt) broke onto the international scene in 2007 when it became the first Romanian city to host the EU’s “Capital of Culture.”
Noble Saxon history emanates from every Art Nouveau facade and gold-embossed church
Sibiu also has a good dose of bohemian flair
Houses with distinctive eyelid-shaped windows (imagine a benign Amityville Horror house) watch over a cast of artists and buskers below
while cafes and bars inhabit brick-walled cellars
Planning tip: The main sights are grouped on three main squares: Piaţa Mare (Large Square)
Piaţa Mică (Small Square) and Piaţa Huet (Huet Square)
The city is best explored one square at a time
The rocky Făgăraş chain runs due west of Brasov for about 50km (31 miles) and is the most rugged and remote of all Romania’s ranges
and marks an important geographic and historic boundary between Transylvania in the north and Wallachia to the south
The mountains are laced with hiking trails of moderate to advanced difficulty and sprinkled with mountain chalets and unstaffed huts to allow hikers to break up journeys over several days
The most popular walks start from Lake Bâlea
Planning tip: Note some higher-elevation trails can be covered in ice as late as June
July and August are the best months for hiking
You’ll generally find free spots to shelter at unstaffed refuges
but book any beds in staffed cabanas or mountain hotels in advance to avoid disappointment.
If you’re a fan of the popular Netflix Addams Family remake Wednesday
you’ll want to pop in to Bușteni’s Cantacuzino Castle
early-20th-century summer residence of the noble Cantacuzino family has been fully restored
Tour the magnificent interiors and have lunch at the in-house restaurant Canta Cuisine – try to snag a terrace table with fabulous views of the Bucegi Mountains
Detour: Take a day trip to the 1695-constructed Sinaia Monastery nearby framed at the back by forested mountains
The main church is a marvel of carved floral decoration; oil paintings are within
The Transfăgărăşan Road (Hwy 7C) is Romania’s most exciting strip of asphalt
Climbing to a height of over 2000m (6561ft)
the drive provides an unforgettable experience behind the wheel
Along stretches you’re hemmed in by sharp cliffs and forest
these give way to breathtaking mountain views.
Start from the northern terminus at Hwy 1/E68 and proceed south
when the road begins a series of jagged turns through the forest
replaced by unfolding views of sheer rock face
you arrive at a point overlooking the Bâlea Waterfalls
The most stunning part is toward the end when the road cuts through a maze of razor-sharp zigzags hanging over precipices
Planning tip: The road is normally accessed from the northern end
though it’s possible to approach from the southern side
while many visitors tackle it as a day drive
it’s more fun to arrange an overnight stay at one of the cabanas on Lake Bâlea.
Bejeweled by 80 glacial lakes and with peaks towering above 2000m (6561ft), the Retezat Mountains are a spectacular stretch of the southern Carpathians. Retezat National Park
as much for its wildlife as its dizzying walking trails.
wolves and bears slink through forests and golden eagles nest on its cliffs
The reserve is spangled with alpine flowers like gentians
Walkers in Retezat National Park are spoiled for choice with 516km (320 miles) of marked trails
most of them substantial five-plus-hour treks
Planning tip: Excellent hikes begin from Râușor

Rick van Riel will be bidding to continue the family tradition at this year’s European Road Mile on Saturday 21 September
following in the footsteps of his older brother Robin who won the inaugural title at last year’s Brasov Running Festival
Robin won a sprint finish in 2023 to defeat several better-known runners and a quick turn of speed clearly runs in the Dutch family’s genes as Rick comes to Brasov in fine form having reduced his 800m personal best to 1:45.77 and his mile best to 3:56.28 in races on the track at the end of August. However
van Riel will face some strong opposition with three runners having run quicker than him over the metric mile
Heading the European Road Mile men’s field on 1500m times is Spain’s Ignacio Fontes
who made the finals of the 2020 Olympic Games
2022 World Athletics Championships and was the 2019 European U23 champion with a personal best of 3:33.27
a 2024 European Athletics Championships finalist who set a personal best of 3:33.98 earlier this summer
has tuned up for Brasov with an outing in New York’s downhill but famous Fifth Avenue Mile in 3:52
Great Britain’s James Gormley could also be in contention for honours
His 1500m best is ‘only’ 3:36.25 but he is the fastest man in the field over a mile on the track having run 3:53.69 last month
Romania’s local hope Cristina Balan finished second in 2023 and will be bidding to go one place be better on Saturday
Gabija Galvydyte heads the women’s field and on paper looks to be the favourite with a 1;59.18 800m personal best set at the Olympic Games in Paris last month
The Lithuanian also has a 1500m best of 4:08.60
which makes her the fastest woman in the field
there are two good Hungarian runners who have made the trip over the border
The leading runners in the European Road Mile (with 1500m personal bests) are:
“After the success of the inaugural European Road Mile last year
and the event’s increasing international popularity
we hope that the runners will be inspired in Brasov
I think a number of national records could be under threat on Saturday,” commented Race Director Daniel Santa
The European Road Mile on Saturday 21 September and tRUNsylvania 10K – a World Athletics Elite Road Race – on Sunday 22 September are part of the Brasov Running Festival 2024
The Festival takes place against the spectacular backdrop of the Carpathian Mountains and close to the centre of the historic and picturesque Transylvanian city which can date its origins back to the 13th century
Both the European Road Mile and tRUNsylvania 10K will be streamed live via the Brasov Running Festival YouTube channel

The new local hub is equipped with sorting technologies for small and medium-sized parcels and serves
primarily in the eastern part of the country
As the volume of deliveries made by the courier company in these counties increased by more than 28% at the end of last year, compared to the same period in 2023, Sameday has invested over RON 21 million in the new operational hub, aiming to streamline logistical processes and enhance the delivery experience.
“The need for efficient and reliable delivery services is growing as customers become more and more careful about how they plan their budget and manage their business and shopping
Whether they operate an e-commerce business or choose person-to-person shipping services
The new logistics center helps us increase productivity and streamline sorting processes to successfully handle increasing parcel volumes and enhance service quality”
The new logistics center has been designed to integrate both automated and manual sorting belts
the facility is equipped with an automated sorter capable of handling up to 7,000 parcels weighing up to 20 kilograms per hour
the center is also equipped with a manual belt for non-standard parcels

The Brasov Running Festival 2024’s European road mile races saw wins for Lithuania’s Gabija Galvydyte and France’s Romain Mornet in course records of 4:36.8 and 4:01.7 respectively on Saturday (Sept 21)
a Paris 2024 Olympian over 800m and the fastest women in the field with a 1500m best of 4:08.60
immediately raced into the lead in the women's race
She was about 30 metres ahead of her nearest rivals at halfway on the course around Brasov’s Coresi business district but was tiring in the final 200m as Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics-Toth closed her down with the line in sight
the Lithuanian held on to win in 4:36.8 with Vindics-Toth just under a second behind in 4:37.7
national records for the two women for the increasingly popular event which gained international recognition last year
I finished university in the USA this summer as well as going to the Olympics and running under two minutes for the 800m so this is a great end to the season,” said Galvydyte
I thought I had finished my season just over a week ago and then this race got offered to me and I thought ‘I have one more race in my legs’ so I’m really glad I came here
"I started fast as I wasn’t sure of the course and expected people to chase me earlier but that didn’t happen,” she added
The men’s race developed in a different fashion as a five-man pack stayed together for much of the race about 30m adrift of the Kenyan pacemaker who had been instructed to tow the leaders towards a sub-four-minute time
with 300m to go Mornet started to increase the pace
In the closing stages of the race only Britain’s James Gormley could stay with the Frenchman as the pair duelled for the win with the line in sight
in the end Mornet had too much in reserve and was able to hold off the Briton with the pair crossing the line in 4:01.7 and 4:02.3 respectively
"I wanted to run faster but the pacermaker went too far ahead so after 200 metres I decided just to plan how I was going to take the victory,” reflected Mornet
I went to the front and started to push then pushed again with maybe 300 metres to go as that's very familiar to me from races on the track
It's what you practice in training and what you do in races
I knew I had the capacity [to hold off his rivals] in the last 100 metres."

The tRUNsylvania 10K at the Brasov Running Festival 2024 saw victories for the Kenyan duo of Daniel Kinyanjui and Loice Chemnung on Sunday
Course records didn’t fall on this occasion at the World Athletics Elite Lable Race
but both contests were still thrilling affairs
with Kinyanjui and Chemnung prevailing after sprint finishes in 27:08 and 30:13 respectively
The 19-year-old Kinyanjui, with just a handful of track credentials to his name, showed what a talent he is in his debut at the distance by pulling away from Morocco’s Hicham Amghar and the tRUNsylvania 10K defending champion Weldon Langat
His surge from a long way out proved to be decisive and he maintained his form in the closing stages of the race to upset the odds
despite Kinyanjui’s two challengers closing with the line approaching
“This has to be the best day of my life,” said the delighted Kinyanjui
“My training had been going well in Kenya and I had some good times over 10km in training
but I still didn’t know what to expect as this was my first race in Europe.”
I knew I wanted to run faster than I had done in training
which meant improving on the 2022 course record of 26:51 by Kenya’s Nicolas Kipkorir was starting to look unlikely) was the pace I wanted
I think I would have even been happy if the pace had been 13:20
“I was still feeling great at the start of the third [of three] lap
I did a little move at 7km as the group was quite big but at 8km I decided to go again because I wasn’t sure my kick was as strong as the others
and I decided to be brave at the front,” he added
Kinyanjui’s bravery paid off and he ended the morning US $5000 richer
Amghar also ran the race of his life and produced a Moroccan record of 27:09
just outkicking Langat who was given the same time
No less than nine men in the top 10 ran personal best times
all finishing inside 27:40; and there was a South African record for Maxime Chaumeton who ran 27:36 in ninth place
with 5km passed in 15:19 meant an anticipated sub-30 finish disappeared from view
However, passing the halfway point was the cue for Janeth Chepngetich to make her move and try to break away from the leading group of 12 women
Her change of pace had the affect of splintering the pack
Seven women were still together at the start of the third lap but only the eventual winner Chemnung went with Chepngetich when the latter surged again with three kilometres to go
Chepngetich, the 2024 All-Africa Games 10,000m champion who just missed out on Olympic selection when she finished fourth in the Kenyan 5000m trial for Paris
continued to force the pace for much of the next two kilometres but with about 300 metres to go Chemnung went through the gears and her compatriot had no response
Behind Chemnung
Chepngetich was six seconds in arrears in 30:19 while Judy Kemboi finished third in a personal best of 30:29 to complete an all-Kenyan podium
No less than 10 women went under 31 minutes with six of them getting personal bests

subsection 2: Apața-Cața after starting the 4th TBM
one of the few projects in Europe where four TBMs are boring four tunnels at the same time
proof of AKTOR’s ability to deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure projects that enhance connectivity across Romania and the wider European region
The entire team is proud to be part of this historical enterprise which will contribute to strengthening the Rhine-Danube Corridor
contributing to the region’s sustainable growth and mobility for generations to come

the TBMs mount around them pre-cast concrete segments 1.5 meters wide each
to create the circular shape of the tunnel
The tunnels will be connected by galleries: 13 connecting galleries, with a total length of 601 linear meters for the Ormeniș tunnel, respectively 10 connecting galleries, with a total length of 417 linear meters for the Homorod tunnel.
The Ormeniș/Homorod underpasses will each consist of two railway tunnels with one railway line each
The distance between the two bored tunnels will be variable and is planned to be between 30m near the entrance areas and 70m near the high overburden area
The four tunnels will have an inner diameter of 8.6 meters (an outer diameter of 9.4 meters
The four TBMs used by Aktor have been built by the HERREKNECHT company

The tRUNsylvania 10km forms part of the fourth edition of the Brasov Running Festival
which will also feature the European Road Mile the previous day on September 21
a former world under-20 1500m record-holder
took the Olympic 5000m silver medal behind Jakob Ingebrigtsen in Paris last month and the Kenyan will look to translate that form to the roads in Brasov
they will be aiming to improve on the tRUNsylvania 10km course record of 26:51 set by another Kenyan
Langat finished second behind Kipkorir Kimeli in that race two years ago in what is still his personal best of 26:55
Kwemoi is a relative novice on the roads despite his accolades on the track
He has only three previous road races to his name
and a more modest best over the distance of 27:16
The tRUNsylvania 10km is a World Athletics Elite Label Race and the only road race of this status in Romania
It takes place over a fast three-lap course in the modern Coresi district of Brasov
The European challenge is led by Swiss marathon record-holder Tadesse Abraham

The Braşov-Ghimbav International Airport reached the milestone of 200,000 passengers on Friday
a moment of assessment during which the airport’s management announced that since its inauguration
100 tons of cargo have also been transported
the airport faces a problem: the lack of a restaurant
The main priority for the upcoming period will be the expansion of the boarding platform and attracting new airlines to the Braşov airport in order to increase the number of destinations
the newly elected President of the Braşov County Council
"Contrary to the skeptics' predictions who claimed that flights would never take off from Braşov (...)
even in ninth place among the 17 airports in Romania
we have reached the figure of 200,000 passengers
and I am confident that in the coming months
we will be on an increasingly positive trend and will be among the top six - perhaps even five - airports in Romania."
"The first objective is the expansion of the platform
and we will ensure that all the current deficiencies we face are resolved
I will instill more confidence in the airlines and assure the people of Braşov that we will have more and more flights from the Braşov airport," stated Veştea
who will resume his position as President of the Braşov County Council
the supervisory body of the Braşov airport
Pasagerul cu numărul 200.000 a aterizat în urmă cu câteva secunde pe Aeroportul Internațional Brașov-Ghimbav și se află..
The increase in the number of passengers is the main long-term objective of the Braşov Airport management
only after reaching a threshold of 700,000 passengers can we talk about achieving a "break-even" point in terms of expenses and revenues
"I estimate that break-even point - where revenues equal operating expenses - will be reached when the threshold of 700,000 passengers is achieved
everything is linked to the expansion of the platform
We need to find the best solution and secure rapid financing so that next year
this new platform can be put into operation," emphasized Mircea Albu
A source of income for the Braşov airport is renting out commercial spaces on the premises; however
currently there is no interest in the space designated for duty-free sales and the 200-square-meter space for a restaurant
While the winning company for the duty-free space withdrew before signing the contract
for which the asking price was 33 euros/square meter
as there are no tenants willing to make the investment
One solution could be to bring a company to Braşov that operates similar food service activities at other airports
The international travel retailer Lagardère already operates at the Braşov airport
having expanded its activities to several Romanian airports in recent years
"We have put commercial spaces up for rent - those for duty-free
Now we are resuming auctions for duty-free and the restaurant
where the starting prices are slightly higher
hence potential tenants have not shown interest
We are in the phase of evaluating the spaces with an expert to find the correct starting price for the auction
we will convene a meeting of the County Council
we will have a new round of auctions," specified Albu
one of them being the arrangement of smoking areas
"We were keen on addressing all the requests from those who write to us
and we have already solved the issue raised by smokers by setting up a smoking area in the non-Schengen area
The smoking issue becomes more pressing when a company is delayed by two to three hours," mentioned the Director of the Braşov airport
Aktor is building two pairs of tunnels on the subsection 2 Apața-Cața of the Brasov – Sighisoara railway line using four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) which have all entered the mountains around Racos
bore 123 meters and installed 87 concrete lining rings
TBM 4 – Konstantina followed mid-December and bore 201 meters of tunnel and installed 104 concrete lining rings
The two TBMs will realize a pair of tunnels long of 5.1 km in the direction of Homorod
This is the northern pair of tunnels AKTOR builds on this future railway segment and is continuing the southern pair of tunnels (Ormenis)
where TBMs 1 – Varvara and 2- Eleni started work in the spring
Despite various unforeseen challenges in the terrain
TBM Eleni began boring at the beginning of March 2024
and is now over 1.15 km deep into the mountain
TBM Varvara started at the end of May last year and topped 0.76 km deep
More than 200 Romanian subcontractors and suppliers of parts and services for the constructions on the subsection 2 Apața-Cața of the Brasov – Sighisoara railway line
providing anything from essential construction materials such as precast concrete elements
to specialized services including geotechnical studies
as well as design and environmental monitoring
They play a key role in the project implementation
with the AKTOR experts ensuring the quality of their deliverables
Subsection 2 Apața-Cața is part of the Brașov-Simeria railway line rehabilitation project
for traffic with a maximum speed of 160 km/h
Brasov is one of the best partners as far as the implementation of projects funded from the first contribution under the Romanian-Swiss Cooperation Program is concerned
ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Romania Massimo Baggi on Friday told city mayor George Scripcaru during his visit to the renowned mountain resort."Before coming here
I looked over the many cooperation arrangements we had with you as part of the first contribution facility
you are one of our best partners for the first contribution
and now we expect you to also be our best partner for the second contribution facility
given the good experience you have," Baggi declared
as cited in a statement by the Brasov City Hall.He announced that the budget package for Romania for the second contribution facility will be between 200 and 300 million euros for 11 programs and invited Brasov to participate in the calls on two financing axes it has experience with: energy efficiency and the development of dual education.According to the diplomat
the financing axes are opening up during this period
as the Swiss side will sign the financing contracts with each ministry in charge."I discussed with Mr
Ambassador new opportunities for projects and co-financing programs
on the same model that we should access in important areas for Brasov: education and energy efficiency
Equally important is that there are funding opportunities for what the highly useful addiction center means
in order to protect children and young people from the scourge of drug use
which get co-financing from Swiss money plus a percentage from the government
We will participate in the next period in discussions in Bucharest and I am sure that we will manage to access these funds for Brasov," mayor George Scripcaru said. The projects of the second Swiss-Romanian cooperation program will be implemented between 2025 and 2028.Brasov received financing through the first stage of the said cooperation program for the modernization and energy efficiency of the Computer Science High School and the Gymnasium School No
but also for the modernization of the heating energy transport network in the Tractorul neighborhood.

Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich broke the women-only world 10km record* at the Trunsylvania 10km
clocking 29:24 at the World Athletics Elite Label road race held on Sunday (10) as part of the Brasov Running Festival in Romania
the 22-year-old showed her intent from the start and covered the first 5km in 14:25 – four seconds faster than the women-only world record for that distance
She had a lead of 10 seconds over her compatriot Catherine Reline at that point
Ngetich went on to pass 6.5km in 18:54 and 8.5km in 24:56 before crossing the finish line in 29:24 to record the fastest ever 10km in a women-only race
improving on the 30:01 set by the late Agnes Tirop in Herzogenaurach in 2021
As well as being the fastest women-only 10km
Ngetich’s time is the third-quickest by a woman in history
behind only the 29:14 run by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in a mixed race in Castellon last year and the 29:19 Yehualaw clocked in Valencia earlier this year
“The world record is a surprise to me,” said Ngetich
who started the 2022 race in Brasov as the pacemaker but went on to finish second in 30:30
“I didn’t expect to get the world record
but a world record is really a surprise.”
The race started at a fast pace right from the gun with Ngetich
Reline and Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek leaving the pacemaker – who had been asked to lead the runners through 5km in 15:00 – quickly behind
The trio sped through 1500m in 4:12 and Cheptoyek started to lose contact with the Kenyan pair a kilometre later
Ngetich and Reline went through 3km in 8:32 but it was only a few hundred metres down the road in the Coresi district on the outskirts of the Transylvanian city that the latter started to drift back
who claimed bronze at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in February and then finished sixth in the 10,000m final at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 last month
set a women-only world 5km record with her split of 14:25
improving on the 14:29 achieved by Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi in Herzogenaurach on the same day that Tirop set her 10km mark
Ngetich had built up an 18-second lead over Reline and the gap just kept on widening
As Ngetich passed the 8.5km checkpoint in 24:56
and the leader continued to fly over the final section of the three-lap course before gaining her second world record of the morning
“I started the year with the World Cross
so I wanted to close the season with a good result,” explained Ngetich
who achieved that aim in sensational style
Weldon Langat wins the Trunsylvania 10km (© Brasov Running Festival)
A group of seven athletes went through 5km in 13:30
with another four just two seconds further back at the halfway point
Surges in the sixth kilometre by Kenya’s Amos Kurgat and Dennis Kibet saw the pair pull away
with Langat being towed along comfortably in their wake
Kibet continued to regularly push the pace over the course of the next three kilometres but with just over one kilometre to go
he started to pay for his service at the front
As Kurgat and Langat embarked on the final kilometre
the latter used that as a signal to change gears and made a decisive move that took him to victory just over two-and-a-half minutes later
while the 2018 world U20 5000m champion Edward Zakayo Pingua came through strongly over the final kilometre
firstly overtaking the tiring Kibet and then almost catching Kurgat to complete an all-Kenyan podium in third place with 27:14
The Trunsylvania 10km took place on the second day of the Brasov Running Festival
with Saturday (9) offering elite mile races
Robin van Riel of the Netherlands and Turkiye’s Emine Hatun Mechaal claimed victories in the European Road Mile
winning in national records of 4:05.5 and 4:41.7
Mechaal was the first across the line as dusk started to fall over the Coresi district
after a well calculated run that saw the 2014 European U20 cross country champion pull away from her nearest rivals over the final 100 metres
Romania’s Cristina Balan finished second in 4:43.0
while Greek 1500m champion Melissa Anastasakis was third in 4:44.0
runners in the leading pack were reluctant to go with pacemaker Stephen Masindet and they passed 1km in an unofficial 2:40.0
which made the anticipated sub-four-minute time and a world record highly unlikely
Van Riel was able to outsprint his younger compatriot Stefan Nillessen in a thrilling duel as the finish line approached
Van Riel clocked 4:05.5 to Nillessen’s 4:05.8
with Italy’s Giovanni Filippi third in 4:07.2
Further elite mile action will be on offer in Riga next month as the World Athletics Road Running Championships hosts mile

the ‘Corona’ is Europe’s quirkiest night train
it hasn’t been named after a deadly virus or a Mexican beer: the Corona night train links Budapest to rural Transylvania and features Soviet-era carriages
Stepping aboard MÁV – Hungarian State Railways’ rather unfortunately named ‘Corona’ sleeper train
and Brasov in Romania and vice-versa – is like going back in time: the carriages are relics from the Soviet era and the staff are dressed in a very formal uniform
I’m struck by the large velvet curtains and wooden panelling in the corridor as well as how roomy my berth is
I’m travelling in the summer and air conditioning isn’t fitted to the carriages but I needn’t worry: the opening windows very much come into their own
Before I even get to see the window though
I spot a lovely bottle of Hungarian sparkling wine waiting for me on the side
the primary purpose isn’t to connect Budapest with Brasov – in the heart of Transylvania – instead
the train is designed to transport people from the Szekely Land in Romania
let’s address the elephant in the room: no
it isn’t named after a Mexican beer or a virus that caused the world to shut its borders for several years
rather ‘Corona’ is the Latin name for the city of Brasov
The train is heavily subsidised by the Hungarian government
and while tourists clearly aren’t the target market
it makes for a cheap and fun experience if you want to go off the beaten track
Fares start from NZ$189 for a single berth and includes a cooked breakfast in the morning
it’s rather spectacular and unlike many sleeper trains in Europe that use microwaves to cook meals
it features an onboard chef and even beer on draught
I travelled between Brasov and Budapest in the summer of 2023 and while the bed was extremely comfortable
the one downside of the trip was being woken twice in the middle of the night by border officials almost bashing down the wooden doors and shouting “PASSPORTS”
owing to Romania (at the time) not being part of the Schengen Area and thus requiring a stamp out of the country
times change and progress is made: as of the start of the year
Romania is now part of the Schengen Area so you should be able to sleep peacefully throughout the night
though it is worth noting the trackwork in Romania isn’t up the standards you’d expect in other more developed countries – hence the lower speeds
That’s not a problem though: if you travel between Hungary and Romania (the preferred direction
in my opinion) it means that when you wake up in the rolling hills of Transylvania
a beautiful part of the world that is rarely explored by tourists
while devouring a fully-cooked breakfast to boot
It’s worth noting if you are planning on travelling between Hungary and Romania (or vice versa) there are not one
not two but four different sleeper train options
so you can do as I did and mix and match: I caught the Vienna – Bucharest ‘Dacia Express’ to the Romanian capital and the ‘Corona’ back to Budapest
the ‘Corona’ is the only train that offers a restaurant carriage – a sign of an excellent train in my mind – and is the cheapest of the four options
the ride might be a bit bumpier than modern trains and a tad noisier than other European night trains
but it makes up for this in spades with its Soviet-era charm
Tickets can be booked via the Hungarian State Railways’ website at jegy.mav.hu
If you are travelling using a Eurrail pass
Several night trains run between Budapest and Brasov: ensure you select Train 407 (for Budapest – Brasov) or Train 406 (for Brasov – Budapest)
