The Romanian government said on Friday it won an arbitrage trial filed by Canada’s Gabriel Resources
which wanted compensation after its plan to build Europe’s largest open cast gold mine in the western Romanian town of Rosia Montana failed
Gabriel Resources had sought at least $4.4 billion in damages from Romania when it filed its claim at the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes in 2015 for losses related to its stalled project
officially withdrew its support for the mine in 2014 after months of country-wide street protests against it
“The Romanian government salutes this decision and thanks everyone involved in defending the interests of the Romanian state,” the cabinet of Socialist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said in a statement
The government had initially expected a negative ruling
Gabriel Resources gained concession rights to the Rosia Montana area in 1999 and fought a decades-long battle with civil rights and environmental groups which argued the project would destroy ancient Roman mine galleries and villages
The project envisioned using cyanides and carving open four quarries which would have destroyed four mountain tops and wiped out three outlying villages of 16 that make up the Rosia Montana municipality
Rosia Montana’s remaining reserves were estimated at 314 tonnes of gold and 1,500 tonnes of silver
Ciolacu wondered whether Romania should revive plans to extract the gold reserves from the area
in 2021 UNESCO added the ancient Roman gold mining area of Rosia Montana in western Romania to its list of protected World Heritage Sites

the overpasses in the Civic Centre will open to traffic
announced Mayor Florin Birta in a press conference held today at the site
The largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Oradea has reached its final stage
with the remaining works to be carried out next spring being the landscaping
as well as the completion of road markings
“These passages that we will open tomorrow are like a gift that the people of Oradea
have lent to the builders and the municipality
we have managed to give these passages and this area back to the people of Oradea so that they can fully enjoy them as they deserve
It means that getting from one end of the city to the other will be much quicker
there will be no more pollution in this area – think of when there were queues of cars standing at the turbo-gas station
at the pedestrian crossing at the Traffic Police
plus the time spent in traffic will be reduced
time that is so important for each of us”
The Mayor of Oradea explained the reasons why traffic in the underpasses will be possible from tomorrow and what these major investments in road infrastructure mean for traffic in the city and for the citizens of Oradea
“These works are due for completion in August 2024
Thanks to the care of the contractors who have mobilized exemplary and all my colleagues in the Oradea City Hall
we have the opportunity to open the traffic through these passages tomorrow at 12:00
There were two reasons that forced us to do this
First of all to reduce traffic jams in the city
because the situation here has certainly created other traffic jams in other areas
everything we have completed by the end of this year is paid for by European funds as an eligible part
being spent from the ineligible part of these projects
was the contribution of the municipality of Oradea”
The network of road crossings is part of the infrastructure investment objective “Sustainable urban mobility corridor in Emanuil Gojdu Square in Oradea – Phase I and Phase II”

Archaeologists have discovered in Arad a fortress that stretches over nearly 90 hectares
which was built about 3,400 years ago in the Bronze Age by a local community in the lower Mures area
according to professor Florin Gogaltan of the Institute of Archeology and Art History of the Romanian Academy in Cluj-Napoca
“The community that built the great citadel of Santana-Cetatea Veche was very likely to possess the important golden
copper and tin deposits that were at the foot of the Zarand Mountains,” Florin Gogaltan told BR
According to aradon.ro, Rudiger Krause, professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt, and professor Florin Gogaltan concluded that the Old Fortress of Santana was built in the 14th century before Christ, about 3,400 years ago. Moreover, they said that the discovery is much larger than the city of Troy, which is said to have been an advanced civilization at the time.
The researchers measured about 55 hectares of the nearly 90. And, as a result of the measurements, they have discovered a huge palace, 100 meters long and 40 meters wide.

Cetate open-pit gold mine (1971-2006) near Ro?ia Montan?
LONDON: Romania has asked the United Nations to make a Transylvanian village boasting 18th century houses and intact Roman mining shafts into a World Heritage site in a surprise 11th hour move that could protect it from a gold mine project
The request to list Rosia Montana was announced as the government of Dacian Ciolos handed over power this week to the incoming Social Democrat Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu
Romania’s outgoing culture minister said in a statement late Thursday that a request had been sent to the U.N
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
This was an unexpected move by the government which last week stated it would not proceed with the UNESCO application that dates back to 2011 and has been caught up in a fight over a gold project
“Protection of national treasures is one of the main responsibilities of the Ministry of Culture,” said an online statement by the government
which sits atop one of Europe’s largest gold deposits
has been at the centre of a battle between villagers and the Canada-listed mining company Gabriel Resources for more than 15 years
Gabriel Resources said the $1.5 billion project to build Europe’s largest gold mine would provide a major boost for Romania’s economy and create hundreds of jobs for the Transylvania region - the legendary home of Dracula
But Rosia Montana’s residents feared the mine would destroy their village and surrounding hills and farming lands as well as pollute the local environment
Campaign groups cautiously welcomed the government’s application to UNESCO
“We have won this battle so many times but the company just kept coming back with new allies and new governments,” Tudor Bradatan
a spokesman for the “Save Rosia Montana” campaign
told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by telephone
No one from Gabriel Resources was immediately available to comment
Opposition to the mine ignited a wave of national protests in 2013 described as the biggest since the early 1990s anti-communist marches
Under pressure from locals and global environmentalists
the then government blocked the mine but last year Gabriel Resources took the fight to the World Bank’s international arbitration tribunal to seek a reported $4 billion in compensation
The tribunal began hearing the case on Sept

unul dintre supraveghetorii sitului arheologic
