The enterprise value of the assets changing hands is estimated at EUR 700 million
The acquisition strengthens the group’s growth strategy in Romania and Southeast Europe
6 MW of operating power in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) segment and 1 MW in photovoltaic capacity
PPC left out the details, but purchases of ripe projects are accelerating in Romania. In addition to a thriving solar power market, wind power investments are picking up and
investors are starting a wave of groundbreaking ceremonies
Of note, Axpo, an energy trading firm headquartered in Switzerland
arranged a seven-year deal in 2021 for 50% of electricity from Fântânele-Cogealac-Gradina
The acquisition is making the Greek company the biggest renewable electricity producer in Romania after Hidroelectrica
Evryo Group still owns Distributie Energie Oltenia
one of the country’s regional electricity distribution system operators
the renewables portfolio that PPC has in operation in Romania will nearly double and the group total reaches 5.3 GW
Currently the installed capacity in the country amounts to 707 MW
the company said today in a presentation of the results from the first half of 2024 that it has secured 80% of the capacity it needs to hit its 2026 renewables target of 8.9 GW
It had 4.7 GW in operation at the end of June and 3.3 GW under construction or ready to build
The company said it has extensive experience in operating green energy projects and a substantial solar pipeline in Greece
The funding structure keeps the leverage ceiling well within the target
PPC Group estimated the added annual earnings before interest
and amortization (EBITDA) at EUR 100 million upon completion
Citigroup Global Markets Europe AG and Euroxx Securities SA are the financial advisors and Clifford Chance is the energy company’s legal advisor for the takeover

CEZ Romania is looking to improve the efficiency of its Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm
with 240 turbines and a total installed capacity of 600 MW
The annual production of a wind turbine is up to 6 GWh
equivalent to an annual electricity consumption of 3,000 households
the total energy production in Fantanele-Cogealac was 143.5 GWh monthly and 12 GWh daily
CEZ wind farm is located 17 km from the Black Sea
and it required a total investment of around 1.1 billion Euro
The entire capacity of the wind farm was put into operation at the end of 2012
four years after the beginning of the works
CEZ Group in Romania recently launched a new service called CEZ Verde
720 residential customers and 30 companies have opted to replace the electricity supply contract from conventional sources with the one that guarantees the supply of green energy
This is part of a long-term strategy for CEZ to build environmentally friendly communities through renewable energy production

A company run by some of the people that installed Europe’s biggest onshore wind park, the Fântânele-Cogealac in Romania, is working on a project that would surpass it in size, Ziarul Financiar reported
Hoopeks International has obtained the technical approval for connecting a 629 MW facility in Galați county in the country’s east, according to data from transmission system operator Transelectrica. The project company is owned by RNV Infrastructure through its subsidiary Electrocentrale Borzeşti, which took over the defunct Borzeşti gas power plant in 2019
A former development chief from CEZ Romania is one of the shareholders of RNV Infrastructure
The Fântânele-Cogealac system has a nameplate capacity of 600 MW. Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) acquired the wind power plant from ČEZ two years ago
Among the shareholders of RNV Infrastructure is Doru Voicu
former state secretary in the Ministry of Economy
He was the development chief in CEZ Romania at the time when the project was under construction
Romania is rushing to boost its wind farm capacity
to meet tight deadlines for European funding
The Romanian media outlet estimated Hoopeks International’s project at EUR 500 million
Electrocentrale Borzeşti recently signaled that it wants to restart the gas power plant
but in a combination with green energy facilities
Of note, a 633 MW wind power project is being developed in neighboring Serbia.

Czech utility CEZ connected the 240th wind turbine to the grid on Thursday
completing the 600MW Fantanele – Cogealac wind farm
which became the largest onshore wind farm in Europe
CEZ has invested EUR 1.1 billion in the Romanian farm
It took less than two and a half years to connect the GE turbines
The farm is located some 17km from the Black Sea, in the Dobrogea region. Foreign and domestic investors alike have developed major renewable projects in this area, due to powerful winds and a generous green certificate support scheme. Energy experts have recently voiced their concern regarding the wind boom in Dobrogea.
The grid operator Transelectrica needs new power lines to transport the wind output from Dobrogea to consumers
but it lacks funding for these critical investments
The lawyers working on these projects say investors have to pay for the grid reinforcement and the set up of new power lines across Romania
CEZ acquired the project for building the Fantanele-Cogeleac wind park from Continental Wind Partners LLC in August 2008
Romania had 1.775MW of incentivized wind capacities by October, according Transelectrica. Wind is currently granted 2 green certificates, which are trading close to the maximum price of EUR 55 per certificate.
CEZ said it will use the Romanian experience for building wind farms with a total installed capacity of 700MW in Poland
The utility acquired a majority stake in the Polish wind developers Eco-Wind Construction
which has fifteen projects in different implementation stages

Investors can express their interest both for the entire bulk
“We have included seven Romanian companies in the market sounding (Energy Distribution Oltenia
The testing of market interest is carried out by CEZ’s exclusive investment advisor
Société Générale,” CEZ said in a press release
The assets up for sale include one of the largest distribution companies in the country (customer portfolio of 1.4 million
6 826 GWh of electricity delivered in 2018)
Europe’s largest on-shore wind park Fantanele-Cogealac (600 MW installed capacity
consisting of four dam reservoirs and four small hydroelectric power stations (22 MW in total
83 GWh produced in 2018) and electricity and gas sales to end customers (3,425 GWh sold in 2018)
CEZ intends to keep its companies engaged in energy services (ESCO) activities and part of the trading business
The divestment of the Romanian assets is in line with CEZ Group’s new strategy
The strategy envisages the gradual sale of assets in Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and partly also in Poland. In June CEZ sold its assets in Bulgaria
The company entered the Romanian energy market in 2005 with the purchase of one of the distribution companies
Wind developer Monsoon Group and Vestas will build a new wind farm in Constanta County
The project totals EUR 250 million and will create 250 new jobs
“Pantelimon wind park will be finalized in the summer of 2012
producing clean energy for 100,000 households
in the same time cutting yearly carbon emissions by 360,000 tons,” said Andrei Muntmark
Vestas will provide the 50 wind turbines necessary for this project. The company has already installed 119 turbines for several wind parks in Romania, with an installed capacity of 320 MW.
Monsson has developed 2,400 MW of wind installations
out of which 750 MW have been sold to Continental Wind Partners
The Group wants to increase its own electricity generation from 25 to 200 MW in the next 3 years
