After the final was over, host IM Dawid Czerw talked to the players (in Polish) for well over an hour.
by coincidence now settled in the same small town of Wieliczka outside Krakow as Duda
talking about how accepting a scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014 had gone:
If we’re talking about getting an education
Yesterday Szymon [Gumularz] said how hard it had been for him to play in the States
The truth is that when I went there at 17 I had a rating of 2470
Drozdowski explained that the studies were tough so that when he played he was exhausted, with young and at the time underrated U.S. stars such as GMs Jeffery Xiong, Sam Sevian, and Awonder Liang preying on “tired students for rating and norms.”
By far the most interesting part of the post-match discussion
was when Duda began to talk about his career and recent crisis
Duda began by talking about the Chess Olympiad that took place in Budapest in September 2024:
I admit that I had a very big crisis of faith after the Olympiad
very unhappy with my play there and generally at some point I decided I’d become an amateur
At some point I decided I'd become an amateur
Duda’s 2794 rating performance for Poland was bettered on top board only by GMs Gukesh Dommaraju, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Magnus Carlsen
I have very little positive feedback from playing chess
What dominates is the negative—won games don’t give me any feeling of satisfaction and wasted opportunities
where I drew with Dragnev like an idiot…
The game he was recalling was one of the most memorable moments of the Olympiad. Duda was completely winning against GM Valentin Dragnev of Austria in round six if he’d played 36.Kxf1!
That forced an almost instant draw by perpetual check
Duda didn’t hide his emotions as the game came to an end
Duda has no choice but to take a draw vs. Dragnev, who stunned him with a brilliant queen sac! https://t.co/OiSr4QmDlZ #ChessOlympiad pic.twitter.com/LGYnt2XWN0
Then against GM Bodgan-Daniel Deac in the next round
Duda walked into what he called an “absurd fork” to lose in one move
Duda explained that wins in no way compensate for the losses:
in the sense that when I won the first three games
all of those games were quite murky and in general I felt nothing
But I already turned down all those tournaments
so now I don’t have anywhere particular to play classical chess
but in the second half [of the year] there will be
The medal Duda refers to is bronze at the World Blitz Championship in New York, which he achieved by finishing in the top-eight and then beating GM Fabiano Caruana 2.5-0.5 in the Quarterfinals before losing 3-0 to Carlsen in the Semifinals
Duda has also twice finished runner-up in Blitz
but even his latest podium finish didn’t bring him too much relief
The problem is that I get almost no positive feedback
and recently I started to feel something similar in all time controls
Earlier it was unthinkable for me that I wouldn’t want to play blitz
Earlier it was unthinkable for me that I wouldn't want to play blitz
Duda said he’d enjoyed playing the online event as he could experiment
but wasn’t hiding his thoughts of quitting professional chess
is that he explained that even in his free-time his favorite relaxation is to read chess books
you don’t need to be a genius to play chess
Duda called his current state “an existential crisis of sorts, a torn soul,” but where did it begin? Surprisingly, perhaps, with a phenomenal achievement—winning the 2021 World Cup, a tournament where he only needed rapid tiebreaks against GM Alexander Grischuk and Carlsen
with all his remaining opponents dispatched in classical chess
“the happiest moment of my career,” and one he struggled to believe
I played very well in terms of quality.” He explained:
I had a mental crisis after winning the World Cup
I’m very proud of it… but from the point of view of my future career
in the sense that the pressure was very big
From the point of view of my future career
—Duda on winning the 2021 FIDE World Cup
What was happening wasn’t immediately visible to outsiders
which he says has always been fueled by ego and rivalry rather than chess per se
The looming event on the horizon, however, was the 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Madrid and a chance to qualify for a world championship match
Asked if Duda was affected by negative comments despite almost all Polish fans being on his side
It wasn’t about haters or something like that
Also those around me put a lot of pressure on me
and also the preparation for the Candidates Tournament was just badly done
in the sense that there was too much pressure
I didn’t have particularly good chances of winning it
Duda said that despite missing a win in the first game against GM Richard Rapport, he’d kept things together for a while, but in the end four losses and one win saw him finish in joint last place, while it was winner GM Ian Nepomniachtchi
and second-placed Ding (after Carlsen decided not to defend his title) who went on to play a world championship match
The Polish number-one can by now see the funny side of his second loss
which effectively knocked him out of contention:
There are those clips of my game with Rapport when I was mega frustrated
because I lost a better position in five moves… All of my wriggling
That wasn’t the low point of 2022, however, with Duda noting the “peak of frustration was the Olympiad in India where for various reasons there was no captain.” He revealed the Polish team had got into arguments, and in the end he only played five games, with a round-seven loss to GM Mark Paragua his last contribution
Duda’s struggles would continue in 2023
In January he withdrew from the Tata Steel Chess Masters before it began
while in November he was forced to break off his appearance in the Sinquefield Cup mid-tournament
and in chess that’s almost all mental
That’s what gives the game it’s meaning
because otherwise it would be pure mathematics and the result would be known in advance
I haven’t had any fun playing classical chess for a long time
but it wasn’t the case that I had negative feedback
it’s almost only been negative feedback from playing chess and I don’t know
maybe looking at too many games with engines
and some unrealistic expectations I’ve given myself
He also reflected on age, despite still only being 26 years old, admitting that the likes of 19-year-old GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and 18-year-old Gukesh are training harder
and now all of these youngsters are mega chess fanatics
I still consider myself the favorite against almost anyone in a match
For Duda, as for eight-years-older Carlsen, opening preparation is a chore. He admits, “I never had the discipline of [GM Radoslaw] Wojtaszek
to memorize everything in turn.” He’s been able to compensate
I have a big bag of tricks that I’ve drawn on in my life
That’s precisely why playing Magnus is so tough
because he’s very objective and often he punishes you
it’s a question of the day and so on
but only against Magnus do I have the feeling that he’s an oracle
Only against Magnus do I have the feeling that he's an oracle
Duda isn’t playing in the 2025 Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam that starts in Germany tomorrow, but he is a member of the Players Club
The rules of Chess960/Fischer Random Chess
with pieces shuffled nearly at random on the back rank
could provide a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his skillset
He didn’t refer to the series directly
That aspect of memory in chess is very sad
and that’s why so many players like to play Fischer Random Chess
that he plans to play normal classical chess this year
at least at the 2025 FIDE World Cup and the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss
The way those events go may have an impact on his future
It’s a question of what kind of feelings I’ll have this year
Let’s hope Duda can recover his relish for the game and still has a long career ahead at the top of world chess

“Our gymnastics program is incredibly thankful for Mary Lee’s generosity,” says Iowa women’s gymnastics head coach Jen Llewellyn
“This facility lifts our program to new heights and will have such a positive impact on our current student-athletes and future Hawkeyes.”
“The support and passion Mary Lee has provided our program over the years is amazing
We are truly grateful for her friendship,” said head cheerleading coach and spirit coordinator Gregg Niemiec
“Having the Marley dance floor and cheer mats permanently installed

President Andrzej Duda has announced his support for Karol Nawrocki, the candidate backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, in next month’s presidential election
the winner of which will succeed Duda when his second and final term ends in August
Although Duda is himself aligned with the national-conservative PiS
until now he has refused to endorse any candidate
it would not be appropriate for him to support anyone standing in the election
Duda made a surprise appearance at a Nawrocki campaign rally in the city of Łódź
who have the same rights as you to go to these elections and vote
will vote for Karol Nawrocki in these elections.”
— #Nawrocki2025 (@Nawrocki25) April 27, 2025
He said that he was doing so because “I believe that he [Nawrocki] is a man who will strive to do everything to make Poland an honest and strong state”
Since PiS lost power in December 2023, Duda, who has served as president since 2015, has been a vocal opponent of the new government, a more liberal coalition led by former European Council President Donald Tusk. He has used his powers as president to block significant parts of Tusk’s agenda
The government hopes that the election of a more friendly president this year – such as Rafał Trzaskowski of Tusk’s centrist Civic Platform (PO) party
who is the current frontrunner – would finally allow it to carry out its planned reforms
a Nawrocki victory would result in a continued stalemate

At his speech today, Duda called on his supporters “to mobilise just like you did in 2015 and 2020” – the years in which Duda won successive presidential election victories, in the latter case in a run-off against Trzaskowski
and not the “cynicism and slyness” of the Tusk government
Duda’s words mark a stark change from his position
expressed in the early stages of campaigning for the election
that as president it would not be appropriate for him to endorse any candidate
“The president of Poland is not in a position to provide official support to any candidate,” he said last November
said that the president “will not help anyone in the election campaign”
"Prezydent Rzeczypospolitej nie jest od udzielania oficjalnego poparcia żadnemu z kandydatów"

— Piotr Leski (@LeskiPiotr) April 27, 2025
Trzaskowski has been the frontrunner in the campaign
with Nawrocki in second place based on polling averages
with Trzaskowski falling from around 36% support in early April to an average of around 32% now
has risen from 22% to 28% over the same period
according to averages compiled by the eWybory website
The first round of the election takes place on 18 May
a candidate needs to secure over 50% of votes
the two most popular candidates will proceed to a second-round run-off on 1 June

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda says he has held a “candid conversation” with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in which he warned that there can be no lasting peace in Ukraine without US involvement and expressed his view that Donald Trump is committed to finding a solution
“I suggested to President Zelensky to remain committed to the course of calm and constructive cooperation with President Donald Trump,” wrote Duda on social media. The Polish president, a conservative, enjoyed close relations with Trump during the US president’s first term in office
“I trust that good will and honesty form the foundation of the US negotiation strategy,” continued Duda
“I have no doubt that President Trump is guided by a deep sense of responsibility for global stability and peace.”
A few minutes ago, President @ZelenskyyUA called me
We had a candid conversation on the heels of the recent meetings with General Kellogg and other developments
I conveyed to him that we consistently believe there is no other way to stop the bloodshed and achieve lasting peace…
— Andrzej Duda (@AndrzejDuda) February 21, 2025
The Polish president added that he had “conveyed to him [Zelensky] that we consistently believe there is no other way to stop the bloodshed and achieve lasting peace in Ukraine except with the support of the United States”
Zelensky himself also wrote on social media that
he had updated Duda on “the ongoing dialogue with the US team” following a visit to Kyiv by Keith Kellogg
Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia
“It is important that the United States stand with us,” added Zelensky
“A strong and lasting peace can only be achieved through unity…Our common goal remains clear – to protect Ukraine and all of Europe from Russia’s war of aggression.”

Duda himself also met with Kellogg in Warsaw earlier this week
after which the Polish president praised the Trump administration for “entering the game very strongly when it comes to ending the war in Ukraine”
saying it had led him to “hope that the war will end”
However, the Polish president – who has been a strong supporter of Ukraine and Zelensky since Russia’s invasion – also warned that “this war cannot end with a Russian victory and a just peace must be established”
Poland’s government – which is often at odds with opposition-aligned President Duda – has been less enthusiastic about Trump’s actions towards Ukraine
Last week, foreign minister Radosław Sikorski called Trump’s decision to hold direct talks with Vladimir Putin a “mistake”
though he also expressed hope that the US president’s “unorthodox” tactics would work
This week, amid concerns that the US was sidelining Europe from negotiations, Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that there “should be no decisions on Ukraine without Ukraine and no decisions – in terms of Europe’s security – without Europe”
Polish PM @donaldtusk has criticised any exclusion of Europe from Ukraine peace talks after a Paris summit with European leaders

Throughout his career he has worked on and built websites using a range of website building tools
He also ran his own marketing agency for several years
Unlike website building giants such as Wix and Squarespace, which target everyone from solopreneurs to business behemoths, Duda knows its audience and is on a mission to become the best website builder for agencies and freelancers.
This new AI-powered tool doesn't deviate from that mission. It has been developed with a clear focus on making the lives of agencies, freelancers, and website designers easier, minimizing the time they need to spend on collecting the assets and information they need to build great websites.I like this tool, as it helps free up time and budget for creatives to do what they do best - create. I hope Duda continues to focus on leveraging the power of AI to the benefit of it's users.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda today flew to the United States to meet with Donald Trump on the sidelines of CPAC, a major conservative conference. The White House said afterwards that the meeting had “reaffirmed our close alliance” and that Trump praised Poland’s high level of defence spending
although the pair were scheduled to speak for an hour
they ended up having just a few minutes together because Trump’s arrival was delayed and he subsequently had to give a speech at CPAC

News of the planned meeting was first reported unofficially by Polish media on Friday and then was officially confirmed on Saturday afternoon
It means Duda became the first European leader to meet in person with Trump during the US president’s second term
Trump will host France’s Emmanuel Macron and the UK’s Keir Starmer – though
Duda and Trump were scheduled to begin their meeting at 7:30 p.m
with the US president then due to address CPAC immediately afterwards
though the Polish president arrived as scheduled
Trump’s departure from the White House was delayed
there were only a few minutes left for them to speak
Duda subsequently sat in the first row for Trump’s speech at CPAC
during which the US president told the audience they were “honoured to be joined” by the Polish president
“who’s a fantastic man and a great friend of mine”

Trump had “confirmed that he envisages strengthening the American presence in Poland” and had “said that we are one of the absolutely best allies”
That echoed the sentiment expressed by Trump’s defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, during a visit to Warsaw last week, where he hailed Poland as a “model ally’
Referring to the brief length of the meeting, Duda – who has long had close relations with Trump – noted that they last year met for a two-and-a-half-hour private meeting in Trump Tower

“I am satisfied with [today’s] conversation because we discussed the topics that mattered to me,” said Duda
adding that Trump had also pledged to visit Poland
The Polish president said that Trump had told him he was determined to bring an end to the war in Ukraine
and that the only way to do this was to talk to Russia’s Vladimir Putin
Duda yesterday spoke by telephone with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, another close ally, whom he urged to “trust” in Trump’s desire and ability to bring peace
Poland’s @AndrzejDuda has urged @ZelenskyyUa to "remain calm and constructive" in dealings with the US

outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda surprised many observers when he appeared at Dr
Karol Nawrocki’s presidential convention in Łódź and endorsed the candidate
Nawrocki is officially an independent political figure—as is traditional in Polish presidential politics—but is largely aligned with the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party
Nawrocki’s primary competitor is Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski
a close ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk
Duda defeated Trzaskowski by a margin of 51.03 percent to 48.97 percent in the second round
‘I will vote for Karol Nawrocki,’ asserted the current President
The endorsement was relatively unexpected, as President Duda has sometimes had a tense relationship with PiS leader and former Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński
The President consistently enjoys higher favorability ratings than Kaczyński and other PiS figures and has maintained a nominally independent image in many quarters
and Nawrocki appeared together on stage at the Łódź convention.
a stronghold of his Civic Coalition (KO) party alliance
The rhetoric at both events was emblematic of the two main camps in fiercely divided Poland
Trzaskowski accused Nawrocki of being a pawn of a scheming Kaczyński
‘[I]t is important to say clearly that we do not agree to have another president who will be a puppet of President Kaczyński,’ asserted the Warsaw mayor
‘[W]e do not agree to another Kaczyński puppet
‘The rhetoric at both events was emblematic of the two main camps in fiercely divided Poland’
Trzaskowski also reiterated the liberal platitudes that have been common in KO campaign rhetoric in recent years. ‘[T]ogether we have managed to build a strong Poland, a European Poland, a tolerant Poland, and no one will take that pride away from us,’ he proclaimed
‘Well, Trzaskowski practically didn’t say a word about the “minor” detail of the country of which he is supposed to be President,’ responded journalist Dawid Wildstein
there was virtually no mention of Poland.’
Over in Łódź, speakers also invoked a puppetry narrative. Nawrocki characterized the race as a contest between ‘the product of a political laboratory made up of briefs and polls
and installed for Donald Tusk,’ and ‘a man of flesh and blood
chosen by Poles and installed for Poles.’ He continued:
‘It matters that one of these candidates has never been and will never be held hostage by any political party
He will be held hostage by the Polish people
The other is held hostage by businessmen and developers in Poland
On Sunday, flags maintained their usual symbolic roles in the two camps. The Nawrocki event in Łódź was a veritable celebration of Poland’s white-red colors, something that assumed additional significance since the event coincided with Divine Mercy Sunday, a Catholic feast day stemming from the life and works of the Polish St. Faustina, and in which the white-red colors represent ‘Blood and Water
which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus
as a fount of mercy for us.’ At the Trzaskowski event
and they were interspersed with the blue-and-yellow of the European Union
Migration, increasingly a key political topic
As Poles of all political persuasions have consistently professed anti-migration views
the issue is a winner for the Nawrocki camp
Nawrocki asserted that the country needs to establish deportation centers
He was referring to the 49 migrant-integration centers the Tusk government has quietly established
The Trzaskowski camp and government allies have sought to limit discussion on this issue until after the election
He will be held hostage by the Polish people’
with Trzaskowski established as the first-round (May 18) front-runner
it is difficult to determine what this portends for the second round (June 1—unless a candidate achieves the statistically unlikely outcome of an outright majority in the first round)
is Sławomir Mentzen of the populist right-wing Confederation (Konfederacja) party
It is not certain whether all of these candidates’ voters would swing to Nawrocki or even turn out in the second round
it is not certain all candidates representing parts of the current government coalition would swing for Trzaskowski or turn out
of the centrist/nonaligned Poland 2050 (Polska 2050) movement
has fared poorly in polls; his voters will be among the most sought-after second-round converts
and it is worth noting that parts of his coalition have clashed with other factions of the government
Even some voters supporting the smattering of left-wing candidates could find more common cause with Nawrocki than the corporate- and establishment-friendly Trzaskowski
Duda famously prevailed under similar circumstances against incumbent President Bronisław Komorowski in 2015, which has led some German journalists (many of whom are openly pro-Trzaskowski) to warn of the ‘Duda scenario’
Momentum seems to be swinging Nawrocki’s way
but the conservative candidate nonetheless still strikes the figure of an underdog

US presidential candidate Donald Trump cancelled his meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda without giving a reason but did post a message of support on social media
Duda “was probably ready [for the meeting]
but Donald Trump decided that he would gain nothing from it,” the private radio station TOK FM speculated
who was known for having friendly relations with Trump during the latter’s presidency (2017-2021)
was due to have an unofficial meeting with his former counterpart on Sunday in Doylestown
a borough with a large Polish diaspora population
with Duda’s visit aimed at unveiling a monument commemorating the so-called “Solidarity” movement
Trump cancelled the visit at the last moment without explaining his decision
according to the sources of public broadcaster Polish Radio
Duda “was probably ready [for the meeting], but Donald Trump decided that he would gain nothing from it,” the private radio station TOK FM speculated
Duda would be breaking an unwritten rule according to which the Polish president should not interfere in a foreign election campaign by supporting one of the candidates
However, Trump did make a post on Truth Social
“This is a wonderful day for our amazing Polish-American community
is at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa
to honour and remember the brave heroes who fought for Poland’s independence after World War II,” he wrote
He recalled the closing words of his speech to the “courageous Polish People” during his visit to Poland as US President on July 6
let us all fight like the Poles — for family
a meeting would certainly be perceived by Poles in the US as Duda's gesture of support for Trump's campaign
which would not necessarily serve the Polish president well
as not all of the Polish diaspora supports Trump
home to some 800,000 people of Polish origin
meaning that both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will be fighting for every vote there
Several Polish analysts criticised Duda’s plans to meet Trump weeks before the US election
with Wojciech Szacki of the weekly Polityka calling it “absurd.”
“It is not that Poland [as a state] supports Trump
[...] I don't even know whether Andrzej Duda is 100% sure that he wants Trump to win the US election,” he said
He suggested that Trump might have learned from the case of Wojciech Kolarski
an MEP candidate in the June European elections who was supported by Duda and failed to win a mandate
decided that Duda's support would not benefit him
Duda will end his second term in 2025 with no constitutional right to run for president again
Asked whether his efforts to maintain good relations with Trump are driven by his desire to obtain an influential international position
Szacki said it would be “a horrible step” as it is far from certain that Trump will win the elections
Polish media have previously reported Duda's alleged ambitions to succeed Germany's Thomas Bach as head of the International Olympic Committee
given the IOC's policy of nominating athletes
a right-wing politician with conservative views
He even wanted to name a permanent US military base in Poland after Trump

CHARLEMONT — Area high-school skiers traded in their pencils for ski poles on Tuesday during the PVIAC Alpine Ski Individual Championships at Berkshire East Mountain Resort.
Skiers spent the day on the slopes instead of the classroom and strived for the fastest combined time across the slalom and giant slalom events.
Seventh-grader Coleton Duda from Hampshire Regional was the second-fastest skier on the boys side, with a combined time of 1 minute, 16.76 seconds, out of the 95 boys skiers that finished both events.
“I did good,” Duda said. “I surprised myself getting first-place in the beginning. Didn’t do the best at slalom, but still finished getting second.”
Duda added he felt the conditions were “grippy” and that there wasn’t much ice to worry about.
Duda was the first of six Raiders skiers to place in the top-25. Cobyn Barry (13th, 1:26.79) , Chad Hockenberry (17th, 1:32.18), Jack Cameron (19th, 1:33.97), Cade Cefalo (24th, 1:37.21) and Logan Lapointe (25th, 1:37.56) made up Hampshire’s fastest six.
The Raiders captured South Division team titles on both the boys and girls squads. Dana Warren (15th, 1:30.92) and G Pica-Smith (20th, 1:36.75) each cracked the top-20 during the girls race as Hampshire’s two best skiers.
“All the kids did really well,” Raiders head coach Jane O'Riordan said. “From the top racer down to the bottom racer… [winning the PVIAC South] is always a sight to go after.”
“It’s very fun,” Duda said on being part of a successful team like Hampshire. “When I came into it, I didn’t expect how much fun it was going to be. Happy that our team did that well overall.”
Other local boys skiers who earned a spot in the top-20 included Keller Mahoney and Henry Fallon from Northampton, and Teddy Scott, James Scott and James Janssen from PVCICS.
Mahoney took sixth place with a time of 1:20.39, Fallon finished in 16th place, while Teddy Scott and James Scott were separated by less than two seconds at 11th and 12th place. Janssen snatched 20th in 1:34.88 for the Dragons.
Amherst’s Wes Dunford and Ravi Fuller were the Hurricanes’ top placers as Dunford concluded in 23rd in 1:36.97 and Fuller took 40th in 1:47.33.
Sarah Fardal had the quickest time among area girls skiers, as the PVCICS senior earned 11th place in 1:27.88 of the 78 skiers who completed each event.
“I think this year we’ve had a lot more competition on the girls side,” Fardal said. “A lot of up-and-coming young racers. In previous years [finishing top 10], that might not have been what felt good, but this year that feels pretty good.”
Fardal was one of five Dragons girls skiers competing and the squad got all five within the top 60. Luo Yi Zhang closely followed Fardal for PVCICS, grabbing 26th in 1:41.38.
“The conditions were awesome today,” Fardal said. “The fresh snow we got on Sunday morning, it made that very nice. The course has held up well.”
Fardal also mentioned she has been involved with the Dragons ski team since sixth grade, making Tuesday’s results extra meaningful.
Fardal should be a lock for the MIAA State Championships later this month, which also happens to be taking place at Berkshire East, and the Dragons star is looking forward to one last race on familiar terrain.
“I’m excited,” Fardal said. “I think it’s going to be a really fun race, a good race to go out on. It’s always fun to ski with people from all over the state. We get all of the kids from eastern Mass. who tend to be really good, so you get to see a lot of good skiing there and that’s exciting.
“It’s good to be ending at home,” Fardal said.
More top-20 girls skiers included Amelia Morse from Amherst, Simone Pagar from Northampton, along with Warren and Pica-Smith from Hampshire.
Morse managed 13th in 1:28.52 for the Hurricanes, while Pagar posted a time of 1:34.59 for 18th for the Blue Devils.
The state championship is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Duda became the outright leader after seven perfect rounds. He only managed half a point in the next two rounds before winning his last two games to emerge on top anyway. The seventh round is where Duda and Tabatabaei matched up, and the Polish 26-year-old extended his perfect start with a victory. Once all the major pieces were captured and each side only had a knight and bishop left
Duda began to take control of the game almost immediately
After Duda lost in the ninth round to GM Christopher Yoo
Tabatabaei tried to take permanent control of the tournament in the 10th round
That put the 24-year-old Iranian into the sole lead with just a round left, a half-point ahead of Yoo, Duda, and GM Minh Le
Playing for a draw isn't something you can do very effectively in freestyle chess
not that that's something Tabatabaei wanted to do anyway in a precarious tiebreak position
And indeed, Tabatabaei's 44-move draw by repetition against Le was just the opening Duda needed, defeating GM Vladimir Fedoseev to catch up with Tabatabaei
