.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Shira Stoll | sstoll@siadvance.comShira Stoll, a Multimedia Specialist for the Advance/SILive.com, is the filmmaker behind the “Where Life Leads You” documentary and the Staten Island Holocaust Survivor series.
– Arnold Aronowitz was six years old when his father was beaten to death by the German army in 1943
In 1941, the Germans passed through Romania to fight the Soviet Union. They took over synagogues where they hosted soldiers and officials
Arnold recalls how nice and friendly the soldiers were to him and his family
He has distinct memories of the officers dancing with him and carrying him on their shoulders
His mother once asked the soldiers why they were nice to them if they were killing Jews in other parts of Europe
because “that’s what a soldier does,” Arnold remembers
someone told the officers that John had been organizing this resistance
This was something Arnold would never forget
I first spoke to Arnold at the Sukkot celebration at the JCC in Seaview in October 2017
I was taken by surprise when he told me that he was an 81-year-old Holocaust survivor
When Arnold and I connected about scheduling an interview
where he goes to escape the Staten Island winters
I flew there to hear how he and his family moved around and hid for three years to avoid being taken away
and how he and his mother would eventually find their way to New York
I invite you to watch the above video and hear Arnold’s story

BETTY LEINBURD (née CALMANOVICI) Betty passed away peacefully in her sleep at home
She was an example of the axiom that what doesn't kill you makes you tougher
to make it through the first 40 years of her life
1922 in a traditional Jewish family in a small town in what had been the border lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
She was the youngest of three children born to Calman and Gitel (née Herman)
Her father owned a grain mill in the town and she had two older brothers
She had the pleasure of living through crazed
right-wing messianic fascists running Romania in the 1930s
Nazi-allied fascists running Romania during the Second World War
the despotic communist government running Romania after the Second World War
There were maybe 10,000 people in Falticeni at the start of the Second World War of whom 7,000 were Jewish
she was exposed to a sophisticated cultural life
towards the end of the war and they were married on January 25
our parents were given permission to emigrate with a month's notice
settling for a few months in Kiryat-Gat and then in Hadera
Life in Israel at that time was very spartan
Betty and Jacob had many close friends living there
but their parents and some other relatives had already made their way to Canada
and they followed eight months after arriving in Israel
with nothing except two children full of attitude
Betty and Jacob got jobs in the garment factories
Betty wasn't cut out for working in factories
and she did whatever she could to earn a living
then working evening shifts as a nurse's aide at the Winnipeg General Hospital
they opened up their wholesale and retail textile business in the Market Square area of Winnipeg
seven or eight years after arriving in Canada
Betty and Jacob bought a bungalow on Forrest Avenue
and moved from North-End Lansdowne Avenue to suburban West Kildonan and Betty became a homemaker
Her cooking was a blend of the rustic culinary flavours of her home country
melding the foods and influences of Romania with the Balkans and Turkey
But her baking was heavily influenced by the hangovers of Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian empire which ruled the area before the First World War
It was Jewish Ashkenazi soul food at its most flavourful
Weekday dinners were never less than a three-course meal
And Friday night dinners were typically open to visiting family or friends marked by a feast consisting of salad
at least one or two vegetable dishes often including ghiveci (a Romanian version of ratatouille)
It brought total joy to Betty's heart to see our friends gorging on her baking
and more than a match for handling two sons who threw everything they had at her
After what she and her husband had been through
or could have been...they were very much rooted in the here and now
with a zest for living and always game for a party
for a night of rummikub or kuluki with friends
Rummikub was the vehicle for getting together with friends
and enjoying the evening of good company and fine food (did we say she liked dessert)
Hawaii was a big favourite of hers; later after her husband passed away
Betty walked every day for at least an hour from the time she was around 50
she needed a brisk daily walk to keep her in a good mood
She would put her head down and march off with determination and speed and was not interested in slowing her pace for the times someone accompanied her
You had to keep up or she would leave you behind
She refused to use a walking stick afterward
Betty went for her daily walk outside on a September day
her inability to have that vigorous daily walk
but her appetite and her gusto never diminished to her final days
we received many phone calls and emails from family and friends around the world
and each noting to us how inspirational our mom had been to them in different ways over the years
Paul (Ceci Kaufman) and Sorèl (Judy)
It was a long journey from the other side of the world to Winnipeg and Betty made the most of almost every day
She is and will be greatly missed by many other family members and friends in Canada

Romanian cyclist Vlad Dascălu has won the gold medal at the 2019 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in the Under 23 category
This is the first gold title for Romania in U23 XCO category
After the win at Mont-Saint-Anne, Canada, this past weekend, Dascălu qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. It will be Romania’s second attendance in a mountain bike race, after cyclist Ovidiu Tudor Oprea finished 37th at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, Prosport.ro reported
Twenty-two-year old Dascălu was a favorite among the 70 starters in the UCI Men Under 23 XCO World Championships race
having won four of the six World Cup rounds so far in 2019
it is an incredible feeling,” the Romanian athlete said
“I have dreamt about this but the race is unpredictable
I am very happy; I cannot describe the feeling I have now.”

A EUR 1 million investment in the expansion of its factory in Falticeni
has doubled the total value of supplement and tea producer Alevia’s complex
The expansion included the office building and production lines
both in the production and sales department
has an area of 2,000 square meters and an annual production capacity of 4,000,000 units
which includes dietary supplements and teas
“It all started from the passion for health, and today we are happy to deliver to Romans a wide range of products they need at affordable prices, with over 4 million customers annually. Expanding the production center was a necessary step in Alevia’s brand development. (…) For the future, we want to export products to countries in the Balkans and beyond,” said Dr. Florin Mitocaru, Alevia general manager.
Alevia produces 120 types of supplements and 50 varieties of teas available in over 4,000 pharmacies and stores in Romania
The Romanian company sells monthly 180,000 boxes of food supplements and 150,000 boxes of teas
Dulcinella is a brand created in 2005 in the Republic of Moldova
and since 2021 it has also entered the Romanian market
The company has a network of 18 confectioners and pastry shops (one of which is franchised) in Bucharest
Over 40% sales growth with a network reduced by 30%
“The year 2024 was a year of transformation
ending with a turnover of €7.1 million for the Dulcinella Romania group
we ended with a significant increase compared to 2023
even though we operated with only 18 confectioners
This result was driven by the change of the business strategy as a result of a new Group management vision
which included the closure of the inherited underperforming confectioners
I believe that the main factor of this result is efficiency”
Among the main business initiatives of Dulcinella in 2025 are the opening of a new factory in Târgu Neamț (to relocate the current one)
increasing the network by opening 32 franchise units – to reach 50 units by the end of the year
an investment of EUR 200,000 in a new ERP system for process optimization
and expanding storage capacity for frozen products
The new factory in Târgu Neamț will employ approximately 100 people, double the number at the current one.
The company acquired a former textile factory in Targu Neamt at the end of 2024 for EUR 750,000
which has an area of 4,700 square meters and is located on a 8,500 square meter plot of land
The entire planned investment in the new factory will be another EUR 3 million
The new factory is planned to open in August and will replace the current one
being more modern and with a production capacity about three times greater than the existing one
Around 100 people will work in the new factory
working in the existing factory and the network of confectioneries and pastry shops
The new factory in Târgu Neamț will open instead of the one scheduled to launch this year in Cernica
Dulcinella’s management aims to build a logistics hub for storing frozen products
which will support both the factory’s operations and the company’s long-term expansion
“The initial planning for the opening of the new factory on the 19,000 square meters acquired in Cernica in 2024 has been modified due to an opportunity that arose at the end of last year
We purchased a former textile factory in Târgu Neamț
which gives us the advantage of retaining the existing team and opening the new factory much faster
saving about two years compared to the original plan
The planned investment for Cernica remains strategic for us but will be redirected towards building a hub that will reinforce our logistical infrastructure and enhance operations in the coming years,” explained the CEO of Dulcinella Romania
Launch of savory pastry products and a campaign with Dubai chocolate
Dulcinella will initially focus on cities located approximately 150 kilometers from Bucharest and on the Moldova area
where production and distribution infrastructure is already well-developed
Dulcinella’s management will launch three new types of savory products this year
in response to growing demand for savory pastries
although general preferences have remained constant over the years
the end of 2024 brought the trend of Dubai chocolate
with the company recently running a sales campaign for this product in all Dulcinella confectioneries
Dulcinella Romania is a brand of confectionery and pastry rooted in Bessarabian cuisine that launched in Romania in 2021
and since 2023 is part of the investment portfolio of the Cornelius H Group LTD investment fund based in London
Products are made in the Dulcinella factory in Târgu Neamț and are sold through a network present in Bucharest
Some of the most appreciated creations include pastries like Cușma lui Guguta
and baked goods like skillet pies or croissants
The brand operates offline and online through a network of confectioneries and pastry shops
