a collection of 86 photographs and one film made in the Romanian village over the course of three weeks
during which time the photographer simply captured what he came across
Hawkesworth’s trip to Floresti had come about by chance while he was working on another film project
but the London-based photographer felt compelled to stay in the small and serene Transylvanian village
it was only when Hawkesworth was in queues at Disneyland Paris
that he thought to exhibit the photographs he took in Floresti
and I was reading this book called Sculpting in Time [by Andrei Tarkovsky] and it made me think about spending time in one place
I should bloody do that.” The resulting show was put together to mimic the feeling Hawkesworth had while spending time in Floresti
from an almost life-size portrait of a man in his bed to a collection of extra-small shots of beautiful wildflowers (“like being hit by a wave of flowers,” he says)
serves to immerse the viewer in his experience of the remote village
Speaking to AnOther ahead of the exhibition’s opening this week
Hawkesworth describes the characters he encountered in Floresti and explains why this work is unlike any he’s made before
“I was planning a short film here in England and I wanted to find an orchestra to do a score
and I contacted a youth orchestra called the LSSO [London Schools Symphony Orchestra]
and the conductor asked if I’d like to go and see them perform in Romania
I always like an excuse to go somewhere new
It is this weird and wonderful place – I had no expectations
It’s nice to have no agenda and just be open to what you come across
and I’ve never really shown that in this way
I got up every morning at sunrise and just walked around
what’s so wonderful is it’s very unedited – there’s a lot of pictures
and it really shows every step along the way
I always bang on about this idea of photographs feeling like building blocks and one photo leads to the next and the next
I’ve always taken the pictures out of context – with A Short Pleasurable Journey
that was showing a journey from Antarctica to Japan to Russia and trying to show how my sensibility moved to all these different places
whereas this time it’s actually just showing how I walked down the road
which I thought was nice and touching in a different way
“It’s funny because everyone felt very approachable
but not many people wanted their portrait taken
and weirdly that makes some of the pictures even more monumental for me
That picture was quite crazy – his wife invited us into their home
and I turned and saw him there and I had to do a double take
I said ‘may I take your portrait?’ and he just nodded
and then when I saw it on the contact sheet
it kind of felt like a picture that I’d never taken before
I did a test of that picture to see how it felt life-size
the way that I experienced taking the picture
and when it was up in the dark room it felt like this weird portal
and the room that I was staying in looked out onto a sort of road
and he was helping his dad collect all this grass
The film that’s in the show is this kid wearing these gold shorts
collecting grass for his dad and putting it in this massive barn
I like that relationship between the youthful kid running around collecting grass and the older man in his bed
of all the people that said yes to having their portrait taken it was these two extremes
“I remember when I first got the contact sheets back
I was like: I want to print every single frame
I guess it just made me incredibly curious
I must have just arrived there at the right time in terms of the way that I was feeling at that particular moment
When I go to a place and I’m commissioned to go
I very much approach it without any agenda and I just see what I come across
but somehow in Floresti that feeling was heightened
truly was just walking around with absolutely no troubles in the world
I find it exciting to be able to show something so naive in also a very naive way – I’m just printing almost all the pictures and shoving them on the wall.”

This year marks Dosco PetroServices’ 25th anniversary of business
Dosco was founded in the Netherlands in 1992 by Mr
John Morees and Dosco PetroServices opened its doors with local partner Mr
To put that into perspective: Google did not exist
The journey of the company can be divided into three major periods
with each period having their own challenges and achievements
Dosco has divided them into the first 10 years
then another 7.5 years and the past 7.5 years
As most of you know The Oil & Gas industry in the 90’s was very different from what it is today
Most Romanian Oil & Gas companies were still owned by the state and because of a rough/difficult economic climate
they were not able to settle their bills with money
basically everything except for cash money
To recover actual money to be able to pay their own bills
all these compensation payments needed to be sold first
it felt like Dosco was a trading company instead of a service provider
Having no experience with some of the materials they were paid with
it meant that sometimes these goods were unfortunately sold with additional losses
the years after the Romanian Oil & Gas Industry went through some positive changes
moved offices (several times) and purchased its operations base in Floresti
Dosco Romania improved and grew into the reliable and high-quality Service Provider it is known for within Eastern Europe’s Oil & Gas industry today
disaster struck the company in 2013 and 2014
Vitalian (at the age of 80) passed away in 2013 and John (at the age of 58) in 2014
It goes without saying that the years after
in combination with the Oil & Gas crisis were very challenging times for everybody at Dosco
They were now being forced to change leadership
their founders proved to have built a professional
a new generation of leadership came in and they turned more into a co-operational family-owned business
Dosco is beyond proud to say that they have managed to survive and are still going strong
It’s not by mere luck that they’ve made it this far
It takes something special for a business to keep its doors open for a quarter century
especially in a rapidly evolving and competitive industry like ours
Twenty-five years of building strategic partnerships
adapting to an ever-changing market and improving processes have transformed Dosco from a start-up in 1997 to the high-quality service provider it is today
“We are infinitely proud and grateful to John and Vitalian for creating Dosco Romania and we will do our outmost best to continue and grow their legacy,” Dosco representatives stated
Jamie Hawkesworth is wandering down a deserted road when he encounters a woman standing in front of her house
“we enter a dark room and there was a man lying in bed”
“He waved at us – I thought ‘bloody hell’ and asked to take his portrait.” The man agreed and Hawkesworth set about taking the photograph
“His wife was telling us about her life while I was shooting; it is amazing that those kinds of exchanges can happen like that.”
The resulting image captures the intimacy of the scene
The framing draws us in; it is as if we are standing there too
which comprise Hawkesworth’s exhibition A Short Pleasurable Journey
Part 2 that went on show at 1–7 Aylesbury Street
The work developed over three weeks in July 2018 as Hawkesworth explored the commune of Floresti in Romania
The photographer found himself in Floresti by chance
He was planning a short film in England and searching for an orchestra to produce the score
“I contacted the London Symphony School Orchestra and the conductor invited me to accompany them on a tour across Romania,” he explains
I loved the place so much that I stayed.” Hawkesworth has travelled extensively; his professional and personal work has taken him around the world – from Preston to Antarctica
there was something about Floresti that captured his attention
which is the hardest thing to do,” he reflects
I stayed curious – every time I went around another corner there was something else that made me want to carry on.”
Hawkesworth awoke each morning at sunrise and set off with no predetermined plan
The routine echoed the nature of his practice at the very start of his career
aimless walks to take pictures; on the weekend
he would pick a place by whim and catch the train there to explore
but Jaunt in the dictionary means a ‘short
pleasurable journey’.” In the text that accompanies the exhibition
Hawkesworth expresses the importance of this creative approach
“Being open to chance felt like an education,” he explains
“[…] The constant rhythm of creative exchange gave me a sense of purpose and faith.”
Last summer, ahead of his exhibition A blue painted fence
which encompassed drawings and photography
Hawkesworth began writing down his feelings about the medium
His time in Floresti allowed him to inhabit these reflections: “When I ended up in Romania it felt like I was living those words.” However
this exhibition is more directly tied to A Short Pleasurable Journey: 51 Photographs
the images conveyed the sense of journey that underlies Hawkesworth’s practice
“It was this idea of going from Russia to Japan to Antarctica,” he explains
and then to another – you really build a sense of rhythm in your work and your way of seeing.”
centring on a journey through a single place
Hawkesworth’s aim: to create a show imbued with movement and discovery; to translate Floresti
“I wanted to give a sense of me exploring: you don’t just have these one-off
but you see every step along the way,” he says
“It goes deeper and deeper into that momentum.”
comprising colour and black-and-white images spanning a range of sizes
The photographs themselves should provoke a visceral response
They are not laden with meaning but exist to communicate the enchantment that Hawkesworth felt
“There were these wildflowers,” he remembers
but I like to think it is still effective despite being so simple.”
The exhibited film encapsulates this straightforward
“I was looking out of the window and I saw this sixteen-year-old kid helping his Dad collect all of the grass in their barn,” says Hawkesworth
which somehow became extremely relevant.” The film takes us full circle
“I love the energy of it compared to the energy of the man in bed,” he continues
“It is sort of two ends of this little universe.”

Hungary is now strong enough “in both body and soul” to take responsibility for ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania as well
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in Floresti (Szászfenes)
Speaking at the inauguration of the town’s Reformed church
Orbán praised the community’s work in building the congregation
help won’t be far behind,” Orbán said
“We are proud that the Hungarian government had the chance to support the completion of this church.”
“We Hungarians will only have a future and we will only be able to protect our community
our buildings and intellectual heritage if we unite,” Orbán said
“We will only have a future if we create the conditions for you to be able to make a living in your homeland,” he added
The prime minister said western Europe — out of negligence or naivety — was hiding its religious symbols and turning its back on its own culture
not realising that by doing so “it is throwing away its own future”
Orbán reminded those in attendance that they
could vote in Hungary’s parliamentary elections and asked them for their support in next year’s election
“I can only help you if you help us,” he said
Reverend István Máté said that the church’s construction had cost 3.5 million lei (EUR 760,700) and was supported by a 160 million forint (EUR 513,000) grant from the Bethlen Gábor Fund Manager
As we wrote yesterday, Orbán had a speech at an event in Cluj/Kolozsvár
marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
