There always used to be a long line of traffic waiting to cross the steel truss Danube Bridge over the river between Giurgiu in Romania and the Bulgarian city of Rousse on the other side
But since both EU countries fully joined Europe’s Schengen open-borders zone this year
drives the 75 kilometres (46 miles) south from the Romanian capital Bucharest to Rousse to stock up on “cheaper” cigarettes or perfumes that save him money
it’s faster: no more queueing to have our papers checked,” he said
a long line of cars with mostly Romanian registration plates crosses the border bridge towards the Bulgarian commercial hub
bringing with them tourists who boost the local economy
According to data from Romania’s road management agency
around 160,000 cars crossed the border at Giurgiu between January and March 2025
compared to 128,000 during the same three-month period last year
Bulgaria’s fifth-largest city has begun catering to its new clientele
with restaurant menus printed in Romanian and bilingual staff highly sought-after
The city of 125,000 people — also called “little Vienna” — is known for its eclectic mix of architecture ranging from neo-baroque to communist-era buildings
In front of a popular restaurant in the city’s central square
a young couple from Giurgiu waited patiently in a long queue
it’s one of our favourites,” said 43-year-old teacher Claudia Badarau
Full integration into the now 29-country Schengen zone has had “a positive impact on the city
because there are many more tourists”
“There are quite a few Romanian tourists
mainly because of easier entry,” he said
adding that “90 percent of his menus” are now in Romanian
senior economist at the Sofia-based Institute for Market Economics think-tank
“the effect is almost exclusively tourism-related”
it will be interesting to assess the impact on turnover of hotels and restaurants
the Schengen zone includes 25 of the 27 European Union member states as well as Switzerland
and allows more than 400 million people to travel freely inside the area
Romania and Bulgaria endured a frustrating 13-year wait for full entry and finally joined on January 1
after Austria dropped its threat to veto membership over migration concerns
Truckers and cross-border workers especially have benefited
“For companies whose lorries cross the border
and lower fuel and personnel costs on the same route compared to last year,” Nikolov explained
According to Romania’s transport federation
each carrier can save “two to three hours on average”
which translates into “extra money and extra freight”
The Basarbovo monastery just outside Rousse — named after a shepherd who once lived there as a hermit and whose relics are venerated in Bucharest — has seen more visitors
the monastery remains a popular destination for Romanian pilgrims — and more recently families on holiday
Father Aleko has noticed a “clear increase” in the number of visitors
they never fail to come and light a candle and pray to the saint,” he told AFP
referring to the shepherd who became Saint Dimitar
Translator Oana Manulescu was visiting the hermit’s cave with her family from Bucharest
And the Bulgarians are a very welcoming people,” she said

Romanian traffic information - IGPR's Infotraffic Centre - has reported that road works on the Giurgiu-Ruse border bridge between Romania and Bulgaria
These will be carried out every day for 10-12 hours a day
in sections of 400 metres,” announces the INFOTRAFFIC Centre of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police
Traffic will not be completely stopped but will move alternately
traffic restrictions will be introduced in the direction of entering Bulgaria
then in the opposite direction of exiting to Romania
Drivers are advised to pay extra attention
and strictly observe the temporary signs set up at the site of the roadworks
The possibility of longer waiting times at border crossings must also be taken into account
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises motorists to use the following border crossings with the Republic of Bulgaria:
The Vama Veche crossing is also very crowded in summer
while other border points – such as Negru Vodă – are less busy
The ferry crossing options have a limited capacity of heavy vehicles that can cross
who have carried out two emergency interventions on the bridge this year
have said that the safety of drivers is more important and therefore the repairs cannot be postponed any longer
the Romanian government approved the decision to establish a new international border crossing point between Romania and Bulgaria
called Giurgiu – Ruse II (in operation until 2005)
based on the Romanian-Bulgarian agreement of 2022
This point will only become operational once the infrastructure has been built
and the necessary personnel and utilities are in place so that border control can take place under the norms and standards in force

CANNES 2024 Special Screenings
by Olivia Popp
23/05/2024 - CANNES 2024: Romania's Tudor Giurgiu
Tudor D Popescu and Cristian Pascariu sign a documentary on Ilie Nǎstase which looks to humanise — and immortalise — a controversial yet beloved tennis icon
The filmmakers put forth a very loosely chronological look at Nǎstase’s tennis career
where he became widely known on the international stage after his US Open men’s singles win in 1972
He then became the first person to be labelled as the number-one tennis player on the computerised ATP (Associations of Tennis Professionals) rankings
Despite being an immensely talented player
he is best known for his polarising personality
and he was suitably nicknamed “Nasty” by his contemporaries
Nǎstase rose to fame during what could be seen as tennis’s coming-of-age era
where player etiquette and conduct were not yet in the official rulebook and the role of the tennis umpire had not yet been professionalised
tennis was no longer a stuck-up sport for wealthy spectators
but a form of entertainment ready for fans to cheer
His on-court behaviour was both infuriating and legendary
leaving audiences roaring and opponents speechless
notably captured by a famous walkout from tennis legend Arthur Ashe
Many of the incidents involving Nǎstase eventually led to the creation of formal rules as well as respected informalities
The film boasts impressive access to tennis greats including Björn Borg
his warm off-court personality was palpable
and he easily won over opponents whom he otherwise bashed while playing
Nǎstase’s tennis doubles partner-turned-businessman Ion Țiriac gives the most personal accounts of their time together
revealing just how he became the pride of the Romanian people
he put Romania on the map as global spectators overcame their Cold War biases to root for such a fascinating character
Nasty – More Than Just Tennis is a Romanian production by Libra Films, co-produced by HBO Max and Televiziunea Română (TVR). International sales are handled by Goodfellas

Major repairs to the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge on the Bulgarian side at Ruse will begin on at 10 a.m
The overhaul will be carried out without traffic stoppages and the facility will not be closed
The repair will be launched in the buffer area of the Danube Bridge Border Checkpoint
Caretaker Cabinet Ministers Violeta Koritarova of Regional Development and Public Works
Deputy Dimitar Nedyalkov of Transport and Communications
Bulgaria's Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaykov
and a representative of the Romanian Embassy in Bulgaria are among those expected to attend the event
Ruse Region PR person Georgi Georgiev told BTA
Vehicles will be let through by stages in the carriageway where work is not carried out
The building works will go through six stages
the trestle of the bridge on Bulgarian territory will be overhauled
A 400 m stretch will be closed to traffic for this purpose
Traffic on the inbound carriageway to Bulgaria will be restricted first
followed by the outbound carriageway to Romania
Repair work in this section is estimated to take approximately four and a half months for each carriageway
traffic will be controlled by traffic lights
The lights can be moved to the portion of the bridge under repair
Because of the width and height of the facility
and the life and health of the road users and the builders is paramount
If some activities can be carried out safely without daylight
"All necessary measures have been taken to prevent traffic jams that could block the traffic on the Danube Bridge during its repair
It is very important to observe the signalization that will be put in place and accordingly drivers should not take hazardous driving manoeuvres in the section in an attempt to avoid waiting at the red traffic lights," Ruse Regional Governor Dragomir Draganov told BTA.
The 1,057 km long Bulgarian section of the Bridge
has not been overhauled since its commissioning in 1954
The joints were reinforced more than 22 years ago
and the waterproofing and asphalt surfacing was replaced in 2011
According to the technical design for the overhaul of the facility
panels and waterproofing will be entirely replaced
The overhaul project has been contracted to the Danube Bridge Civil-Law Company
The contract cost is BGN 44,877,228.68 inclusive of VAT
the construction works must be completed within 730 days
Construction supervision will be performed by anther civil-law company
Caretaker Regional Development and Public Works Minister Violeta Koritarova reported recently that a building permit for the overhaul had been issued
The bridge is in an emergency critical condition and poses a tangible risk to its users
The BGN 45 million repair will take two years
with measures to minimize inconvenience to traffic on the facility
Resumption of the Ruse-Giurgiu ferry line will ease traffic in both directions
In early July, Bulgaria declared its full readiness for a resumption of the operation of the Ruse-Giurgiu ferry link
The project is key to easing traffic between Bulgaria and Romania and cut the crossing time
in view of the forthcoming repair of the Danube Bridge
Bulgarian Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Gvozdeykov said at a meeting with Koritarova and Romania's Ambassador in Sofia Brandusa Predescu
Koritarova said that her Ministry had counted over 200,000 motor vehicles crossing the Ruse-Giurgiu bridge in May
Koritarova commented that the ferry link can handle 20% of the heavy-duty truck traffic
enabling tourists to travel more comfortably
10.8 million vehicles have crossed the Danube Bridge in the last eight years
The Customs Agency told BTA recently that the flow of vehicles passing through the facility is increasing every year
while the number of vehicles crossing the Danube Bridge in 2016 was 1,186,307
A total of 10,808,846 have crossed the bridge in both directions between 2016 and 2023 Of these

both lanes of the single carriageway Ruse-Giurgiu Bridge crossing the Danube River were reopened to traffic
the Regional Administration in Ruse said in a press release
The re-opening of the refitted 400-meter section (in the lane on the viaduct heading toward Bulgaria) took place after the completion of the first stage of the major repairs to the 70-year-old-brigde

Ruse Regional Governor Dragomir Draganov expressed gratitude to the Customs Agency
and other state institutions for ensuring smooth traffic organization during the repair period
The ceremony was also attended by Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Romania
and the first trucks and cars from Romania crossed into Bulgaria using the newly renovated lane
The major repair works on the bridge are scheduled to resume on January 8
when a 413-meter section of the lane heading toward Romania will be closed
the repair works on the Danube Bridge will proceed without a complete closure of the structure
Traffic will be managed so that vehicles can pass alternately in both directions using the lane where no construction is taking place
There is heavy traffic of trucks at the Danube Bridge border checkpoint near Ruse on Thursday
with border officials registering that a total of 2,833 trucks passed through the facility in both directions over the past 24 hours
The queue for outbound trucks is approximately one kilometre long
and there are even more outbound trucks waiting at a parking lot near the checkpoint
as drivers must wait more than 12 hours to cross the bridge in order to enter Romania
told BTA that he has parked his truck at 8 p.m
on Thursday he was still waiting to cross the Danube Bridge on his way to Finland
caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev convened an urgent meeting at the Council of Ministers in connection with the problem with parking lots at Bulgaria's border crossings

road traffic will be carried out on a single lane
The Romanian Border Police recommends the following crossing points open in international regime on the border with the Republic of Bulgaria:
we have an unwavering commitment to global sustainability to create positive impact on the world and contribute to the greater good
ADM supports reforestation and tree planting projects around the world in communities where ADM operates to help rehabilitate degraded areas and support plant and animal biodiversity
Earlier in the year, ADM Romania partnered with the EcoAssist Association through an ADM Cares grant to support the 'We Plant Good Deeds In Romania' reforestation project in Prundu - Giurgiu county
ADM Romania employees volunteered their time to plant over 7,000 red oak
This contributed to an additional 17,160 native saplings across 4.29 hectares of new forest planted with the support of Ocolul Silvic Giurgiu (local forestry authority) and other partners
The act of planting native saplings – trees that are a few years old and have already developed a root system – allows local biodiversity to recover by improving water quality
"The forest does not stop at the planting of the seedling
A complete cycle from the moment the seed sprouts until the mature tree
We are now in the middle of a new planting season
together with volunteers," said Marin Toma
"We get involved in projects to restore the environment and biodiversity with the hope that we can contribute to a better world that we and future generations can all enjoy
this partnership is a way to actively support the communities in which we operate
and compliments ADM's global commitment to non-deforestation
preserving water and biodiversity throughout our supply chain," says Anton Povkhan
the forest will be monitored to ensure the healthy development of the saplings
About ADM RomaniaADM Romania is one of the largest operators in the trade of cereals and oilseeds in Romania and the Danube region
It operates a network of silos on the Danube route
and one of the largest terminals in the port of Constanța
The ADM Romania team currently has 400 employees
About 'We Plant Good Deeds In Romania'From 2011 until now
50,000 volunteers and forestry companies have planted and cared for over 3,495,000 saplings on an area of 825 hectares
mostly on unproductive public lands in localities in 36 counties of Romania
Rețele Electrice Muntenia launched a public tender on SEAP platform
for the design and execution of maintenance and modernization works of the medium and low voltage networks in Ilfov and Giurgiu counties
This approach aims to optimize the energy infrastructure by increasing the safety
resilience and efficiency of distribution networks in these regions
we aim to secure strong partnerships with contractors that meet our needs for safe and efficient construction and operation of electricity networks
Maintenance and modernization works are essential to ensure a stable and efficient grid that is resilient and able to cope with the increasingly complex challenges in the energy sector.” stated Mihai Pește
General Manager of Rețele Electrice companies in Romania
The works included in the projects aim to modernize and extend the overhead and underground low-voltage networks
improve voltage levels in existing networks and modernize transformer substations and other network components
Rețele Electrice companies operate networks with a total length of approximately 134,000 kilometers in three important areas of the country: South Muntenia (including Bucharest)
covering a third of the local distribution market
and are developing an investment program to improve quality services
safety and performance of networks and local implementation of environmental standards of the PPC group
The electrical networks operated by the three companies Rețele Electrice count 289 transformer stations and over 25,000 transformer stations
will undergo rehabilitation on the Bulgarian side
beginning July 9 for a duration of two months
The closure is expected to significantly disrupt both freight and tourist traffic
the Managing Director of the Romanian Road Infrastructure Company (CNAIR)
told Agerpres at a Wednesday press-conference
"The bridge at Giurgiu-Ruse is administered bilaterally
with CNAIR managing the Romanian half and the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Company overseeing the Bulgarian half
We have had numerous discussions with our Bulgarian partners
who deem it necessary to completely close their section starting July 9
causing significant inconvenience for both goods and tourist traffic between Romania and Bulgaria
Despite our efforts to postpone or reschedule the closure
we could reach an agreement with the Bulgarian side," Pistol said
based on information available at the time
He added that on the Romanian side the bridge was rehabilitated
but on this occasion a series of maintenance works will be done there as well
Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu also spoke at the press-conference
"My colleagues tried to have this discussion with their Bulgarian counterparts
they did not accept the delay of the works and did not accept anything else."

New films by Tudor Giurgiu and Marian Crisan are to be shown in RO Days’ Closed Screenings at this week’s Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) in Cluj-Napoca
Transilvania festival president Giurgiu’s documentary Nasty about the legendary Romanian tennis player Ilie Nastase includes interviews with Rafa Nadal
the director had given a sneak preview of around 15 minutes of “work in progress” footage before the festival’s screening of Rex Mliler and Sam Pollard’s documentary Citizen Ashe on the life and career of the late US tennis ace Arthur Ashe
Giurgiu had been joined on stage at Cinema Victoria by Nastase after the footage was shown to speak about being the subject of a documentary and answering some questions from the audience
Giurgiu wrote Nastase “became the first rock star in the history of tennis
How not to make a movie about such a character
involved in all sorts of unfortunate stories in recent years
This industry-only section will present Marian Crisan’s fifth feature Warboy

PENNY Romania announces the start of work on the newest warehouse in the country
this will be the fifth PENNY warehouse in Romania
The new PENNY warehouse in Mihăilești will have a team of approximately 200 employees and will cover an area of 22,000 square meters on the ground
The warehouse will have photovoltaic panels installed
and heating will be provided by heat recovery from the cold (depending on availability)
but also by heat pumps from the industrial cold system
so that the new warehouse will achieve CO2 neutrality at the level of heating
CO2 neutrality will also be achieved at the level of ambient cooling
but only cold water generated by the industrial cold system
“Romania is an important market for us
that’s why we have planned investments of over 1 billion euros until 2029
mainly by expanding the store network to a total of 619 PENNY stores and 6 logistics centers
The start of work on the fifth PENNY warehouse in the country is an important step in this direction
We strategically chose to build the new warehouse in Mihăilești
due to the potential for expansion and the existing road infrastructure
it will serve 70 stores by the end of 2025 and 100 stores by the end of 2027,” said Daniel Gross

FESTIVALS / AWARDS Romania
by Ştefan Dobroiu
30/04/2024 - For the first time in the almost 20-year history of the gala
two films ended up tying for the Best Screenplay Award
the awards gala where more than 800 film professionals and journalists choose their favourite domestic productions released the previous year
In a country where insufficient funding makes directors avoid stories set in the past
there are very few features that dare to explore (and exorcise) Romania’s difficult history
which might explain why Freedom took home as many as ten awards (out of its 14 nods)
Best Screenplay and Best Lead Actor (for Alex Calangiu)
with a Best New Hope Award going to young actor Niko Becker
As many as 107 titles released in 2023 in cinemas and on streaming platforms were considered by a jury before the nominations were announced. As always, an Audience Award went to the most popular domestic release of last year: Jesús del Cerro’s Miami Bici 2
which ended its run in local cinemas with a total of almost 570,000 admissions
Here is the complete list of award winners:

When and how did the idea of a documentary about Ilie Nastase come about
I think it was a case of two minds simultaneously conceiving the same idea
we both met and agreed to undertake the project
I was thinking that there weren’t any significant documentaries about major Romanian sports icons like Gheorghe Hagi
I felt compelled to pursue this endeavour because of my passion for tennis
while having limited knowledge about Ilie due to my youth coinciding with his peak
I became curious and resolved to create something about him
and we agreed to work on the film together
When did your passion for tennis start?
I used to play tennis when I was a child; I took tennis classes in Cluj
You mentioned your collaboration with Cosmin Hodor, who has expertise in marketing and sports management, to which you’ve added your passion for tennis and filmmaking. How did this dynamic function during production?
We worked so well together because I believe we share the same values and vision regarding the film
The approach differed significantly from that of a feature film
and identifying prominent figures who could contribute their recollections and stories about Ilie
This aspect of the process required the involvement of a small number of individuals
However, the most significant challenge on the production side was securing funding. The film ended up being twice as expensive as initially anticipated, making this the biggest challenge. While the artistic and marketing aspects were relatively straightforward, budgetary constraints posed the toughest obstacle.
Was that because you had to pay and negotiate the copyright coverage
Securing the rights for all the footage was a nightmare because we wanted it so badly
if this film were to travel—and I was confident it would travel internationally—it could potentially become a global hit
everything needed to be cleared up legally
We were dealing with more than 30 sources of archives
each with their own set of rules and contract requirements
the rates for some of them were exorbitant
Could you elaborate on the research process
I believe we began with books and articles
our research process became meticulous as we delved deeper
He devised an effective method for compiling all our sources
we had a lot of information and creative ideas on how to approach various individuals
when meeting with individuals like Stan Smith or John McEnroe
it was imperative to understand every phase of their relationships with Nastase
I believe Cristi’s dedication to sifting through our research made the filming process much smoother
How did you handle the logistics of meeting with all the superstars featured in the film
especially for individuals like Nadal or Borg
as it was quite complicated to find an available slot in their schedules
each person we interviewed had a completely different story
as was the case with Stan Smith; we conducted his interview in Paris
But when we finally received confirmation from Phil Knight
I’m ready to meet you on Thursday.” Consequently
we had to purchase tickets for a flight to Los Angeles within two to three days and found ourselves flying across the US
we encountered an issue when the airline lost our equipment
so we had to rent new equipment in Los Angeles
typically requiring less equipment than a fictional production
filming in numerous locations had its challenges
we had difficulty obtaining approval to film
we found creative strategies to gain access
Filming a documentary during prestigious events like the Grand Slam tournaments or major ATP tournaments in cities such as Madrid or Rome presented other significant challenges
Securing suitable interview spots where media and journalists wanted the same proved particularly complicated
I distinctly recall the issues we had during the US Open in obtaining approval to film a few interviews
We struggled to find a quiet spot; eventually
we identified a suitable location at the upper level of the sports arena
a tiny room where we could conduct the interviews
Did Ilie Nastase contribute to the selection of interviewees
the first series of interviews were with him
prompting us to seek out additional interviewees
Despite not having personally seen many of the individuals featured in the documentary in years
Ilie proved very helpful; he served as a valuable resource
How was the collaboration with Ilie Nastase during the filmmaking process
Ilie is very straightforward and opinionated
and conducting interviews with him was tiring and exhausting due to him having the tendency to repeat the same story numerous times
He didn’t intervene during the editing process
I was keen to witness his initial reactions
we held a private screening of the work-in-progress version of the documentary
this was the most significant aspect: the fact that he grasped the essence of the film
that of portraying the multifaceted character of Ilie Nastase
showcasing both his moments of anger as well as his charm and generosity
and I was pleased that he understood and appreciated the portrayal
Despite some potentially embarrassing moments in the film for contemporary viewers
Was there anything that really surprised you during the creation of the documentary
one thing that surprised me was the depth of friendship among those players
We’re talking about the big icons of the 70s and 80s
They didn’t speak highly of Ilie just for the sake of making positive comments in a documentary
it was genuine friendship that had stood for decades
They formed a group of formidable champions who travelled together
and trained alongside each other during tournaments
It was a bonding experience and they had a sense of camaraderie among them
which now seems almost like science fiction considering the significant changes that have occurred in sports as a whole and in tennis specifically
they’re accompanied by large teams; but this wasn’t always the case
is there anything you would do differently
and Tudor—feel that we’ve found the right formula
I’ve come to realise that there is still so much more to uncover
and stories that we may have overlooked because with Ilie
we found footage from NBC in the United States—a discovery we had been researching for two years and that no one knew about
I can’t help but wonder if there’s more out there
While the title of the documentary is self-explanatory
the international title of the film will be “Nasty – More Than Just Tennis.” In Romania
we will just use “Nasty” because it’s simple and for obvious reasons
When I came across this drawing—an illustration in a 1977 Playboy magazine accompanying a feature article on Ilie
“Ilie The Terrible”—I thought it was perfect
It captured Ilie in a simple yet striking manner
depicting both his charming and angry sides
perhaps even the arrogant or nasty aspects of his personality
So we decided it would be ideal to track down the artist
and I was pleased to discover he was still alive
he graciously granted us permission to use his illustration
1 in the ATP rankings and considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time
Boris Becker has won 64 titles throughout his career
He was the youngest player in history to win the Wimbledon trophy (at 17 years old
in 1985) and also holds an Olympic gold medal
Năstase played one of his last matches of his career against a very young Becker at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 1985
Romanian player received a wild card from the Prince of Monaco to compete
which combines archive footage and interviews with prominent figures from the sports world
The documentary tells the story of Năstase’s career and the influence he had on tennis
NASTY will be available in cinemas starting from April 16

PRODUCTION / FUNDING Romania / Hungary
25/02/2022 - The movie explores a lesser-known episode from the events that brought about the end of communism
which is in production until mid-March in provincial Romania
is inspired by real events that happened during the Revolution
Libertate reenacts a lesser-known story about those days of violent civil unrest that led to a bloody confrontation between the army forces and Ceauşescu’s instruments of repression
Following rumours and disinformation about so-called “terrorists” attacking soldiers and civilians
and ordinary people will make decisions that will haunt them forever
The film is being produced by Oana Bujgoi Giurgiu and the director through Libra Films, and co-produced by Jozsef Berger through Mythberg Films (Hungary). The budget amounts to circa €1.7 million, with €170,000 coming from the Romanian National Film Center. The Hungarian National Film Institute has also supported the project
Costel Caşcaval and Mirela Oprişor are part of an ensemble cast
Giurgiu tells Cineuropa that he would never have thought he would direct a film about the Romanian Revolution
but his opinion changed following the film’s extensive research phase
“What happened in Sibiu in those times is quite different from what happened in the rest of the country
There was a true shoot-out between the army
the communist police and the Secret Police
It was a trauma for entire families and survivors
trauma that is as powerful today as it was back then
Working on this project convinced me that hiding that garbage under the carpet […] still has a gigantic impact on our society
on the younger generations,” the director explains
Transilvania Film will release Libertate in December
when the anniversary of the Revolution is usually celebrated throughout the country

The emergency pavement repairs to the Danube Bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu have finished
Traffic has been restored and restrictions lifted
the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) said on Friday
The repairs began on June 11 with the introduction of a temporary traffic arrangement
RIA said that the contractor had completed the planned works ahead of schedule so as not to disrupt traffic
The repairs were necessary to ensure safe travel across the bridge
The Agency noted that an overhaul of the bridge is scheduled to begin in July
adding that traffic flow will not be stopped and will be controlled by traffic lights
Repair works will be carried out daily for 10-12 hours a day
The work process will be organized and carried out in phases so that vehicles pass in a two-way direction in the lane where no construction work is taking place
No major repairs have been carried out since the facility was commissioned 70 years ago
Joint strengthening was done more than 22 years ago
and the waterproofing and asphalt pavement were replaced in 2011
The technical design for the renovation of the facility provides for the complete replacement of the asphalt pavement
The contractor for the major repairs worth some BGN 44.9 million is the Danube Bridge Public Limited Liability Company
The contract period for the repair works is 730 days

Bulgaria has ambitions to launch the ferry line across the Danube between Ruse and Giurgiu (Romania) in September. Given the launched renovation of Danube Bridge 1, the ferry link could relieve heavy traffic by between 20 and 30%. This was indicated in a government press release following a meeting between the transport ministry and transport companies.
In addition to the ferry line, Bulgaria’s acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev gave an idea to separate the flows of heavy goods vehicles into those belonging to EU member states and those of third countries. A week ago, Glavchev proposed a similar idea for the Kulata border checkpoint with Greece, and during his visit there, he added that one way to ease traffic jams at this spot would be to reduce the speed limit on the "Struma" highway between Sofia and the Greek border.
Among the main topics that were discussed between the transport ministry and the transport operators were the easing of traffic flows and congestion at the border checkpoints “Danube Bridge 1 and 2”, "Kulata", "Lesovo" and "Kapitan Andreevo" by setting up additional counters and building modern parking lots and resting areas.
The transport sector also asked for an upgrade of the toll system, as well as a change in the methods of law enforcement, so that it would not serve as an additional reason for delays and traffic jams," says the press release.
On August 8, a meeting initiated by Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeykov will be held again, where all responsible institutions and transport industry representatives will clarify the details. A meeting will also be organized with Romanian Ambassador Brânduşa Ioana Predescu, who will be acquainted with the proposal to separate the flow of heavy goods vehicles.

SARAJEVO 2023 Competition
by Marko Stojiljković
16/08/2023 - Romanian helmer Tudor Giurgiu converts the real-life events of the Romanian Revolution in Sibiu into a thrilling
emotional and narrative-defying experience
The opening info-card informs us that the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu relied on pitting different groups
against one another so that it could have firmer control over each of them
bringing the country to the brink of civil war
suspected Securitate operatives and their contacts
as well as a number of civilians (some of them by mistake) in an empty swimming pool
where it kept them under guard until the captives were questioned
civil war-like events from several perspectives of the people involved in different sides of the conflict
The (sort of) protagonist is police officer Viorel Stanese (Alex Calangiu in his first main big-screen role)
who decides to go to work on the fateful day when his police station is attacked by the angry mob
which soon enough get hold of weapons from the armoury
Viorel and his colleagues then try to escape
but they are swiftly detained by the army and sent to the pool
Notable among the other points of view are those of opportunistic cab driver Leahu (Catalin Herlo)
who may or may not be a secret-service informer
and Lieutenant Colonel Dragoman (Iulian Postelnicu)
although initially on the right side of history
gets intoxicated by his newly acquired power over the life and death of people
shorter episodes include other individuals
some of them civilians who got arrested simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time
while far-fetched theories about the terrorists poisoning water
digging tunnels and preparing counter-revolutionary attacks on the army and the people do the rounds
The approach that Giurgiu adopts is not dissimilar to the one he employed in his previous, fact-heavy political drama-thriller Why Me? [+see also: film reviewtrailerinterview: Tudor Giurgiufilm profile] (2015)
since the source materials of both films were obtained through extensive research into the two occurrences
and Giurgiu and his co-screenwriter Cecilia Stefanescu focus on more than one individual and their stories
The style is also similar in terms of the frequent use of long
single-take sequences with a hand-held camera
but here the camerawork tends to be shakier and more chaotic
which actually fits the material perfectly
especially in the action-packed first half
while both the camerawork by Alexandru Sterian and the editing by Réka Lemhényi get steadier and more predictable once the whole internment situation seems “normalised”
Tudor Giurgiu paints a realistic picture of the revolutionary chaos and turmoil
makes a thrilling film that grabs viewers’ attention
elicits an emotional response and leaves a lasting impression
Libertate is a Romanian-Hungarian co-production between Libra Film and Mythberg Films. Reason8 handles the international sales, while Transilvania Film oversees the domestic distribution
"This particular episode about the chaos of the revolution in the aftermath of Ceaușescu's downfall is not well known in Romania"
The director and the screenwriter discuss their film, in which they explore the civil war-like events that took place in Sibiu during the last days of 1989's Romanian Revolution
Bogdan Mureşanu’s Venice-awarded debut feature exceeded 20,000 admissions during its opening weekend
03/10/2024 | Box Office | Romania
"The films which prevail are the ones which speak to us, which we like and which we want to carry forwards and champion"
The director unpicks the 24th edition of the festival, notably the European competition and the focus sessions, as well as the current state of distribution

Valentine's day is here and it's time to show a little extra love to the people you care about
it's important to pamper yourself with the same kind of love and kindness that you'd shower on anyone else
"We often forget that the most important relationship we have is the one we have with ourselves," says New York-based holistic psychotherapist and life coach, Lucía Garcia-Giurgiu
prioritizing self-compassion and self-care has some serious benefits for our mental and physical health
Being kind to ourselves lowers anxiety and helps foster grit and resilience
"practicing self-compassion during these uncertain times builds an inner sense of safety and strengthens what in psychology is called our 'internal locus of control'—a sense that you have control over aspects of your life," explains Garcia-Giurgiu
"When your brain detects stress it sends stress hormones (cortisol) to your body that triggers the 'fight or flight' response
your breath quickens and your muscles get ready for action
stress can be beneficial to your health because it protects your body in an emergency by preparing you to react quickly
when your stress response stays active for an extended period
The more you refuel and recharge yourself through self-love and self-care practices the more you can step out of the 'fight or flight' response," Goldstein explains
investing time in taking care of yourself isn't just good for you but others around you as well
"A loving relationship with yourself can have a ripple effect on others," says Garcia-Giurgiu
"Research shows that compassion is contagious and that others can pick up on your emotional state through mirror neurons," she adds
by being more attuned to your emotional needs
you'll able to strengthen your emotional intelligence and empathic skills and can read other people’s feelings better and tend to their needs
"These effects can have a huge impact on the quality of both your personal and professional relationships—helping you foster deep meaningful connections with friends and loved ones
They can even help create motivating and productive work environments," she notes

Roma sent a message to the rest of the Europa League competitors with a flatout dominant 4-0 victory over Astra Giurgiu
As we’ve mentioned several times here over the course of the years
as much as we try to stay on top of everything and provide you with at least little snippets on a daily basis
sometimes the real world intervenes and prevents that from happening
waxed Astra Giurgiu 4-0 yesterday afternoon
By now you’ve no doubt seen the highlights and read all the superlatives about Totti’s fantastic 40th birthday celebration
but let’s run in back so we can quickly absorb what this man has accomplished over the past several weeks
Days removed from his 250th career Serie A goal
his sixth goal in his last 13 league matches
contributing five key passes and registering two official assists—three depending on how you view the Fazio tap in that followed Totti’s thunderous free kick
But that may not even be the most impressive stat from his performance yesterday
This wasn’t Totti as a decoy or Totti as a last minute energizer
Totti the engineer and Totti the be all end all
It was simply a magnificent and magnanimous performance from Totti
and sure the level of the opponent was a factor
but you don’t see any other 40-year-olds doing that
Roma received stellar performances from Leandro Paredes
perhaps indicating that things are starting to gel
but this could be the resounding victory the club needed to remove all doubt from the equation
So while we apologize for the late match review
I’ve been penning odes to Totti for nearly five years now
There simply is nothing this man can’t do with a ball at his feet

(Cook County Sheriff's Office)GLENVIEW
IL — A nurse at Glenbrook Hospital sexually assaulted at least two patients in the last year
the Glencoe man is accused of assaulting women after administering them painkillers
raped a 75-year-old woman last November and forced himself on a 53-year-old woman in last month
according to Glenview police and Cook County prosecutors
a judge ordered Giurgiu held without bail at Cook County Jail in connection with felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault
prosecutors said a woman was being treated for a broken leg
She was in extreme pain during the early morning of Nov
when she told her family members to go home
was later transferred to another hospital for surgery
and prosecutors said the victim notified other medical personnel and a family member about the incident
But Giurgiu was only fired after a second woman reported he sexually abused her
a 53-year-old woman arrived at the hospital suffering pains related to an existing health condition
the assistant state's attorney told the judge Friday
After the end of the shift of a nurse familiar to the patient ended
the hospital transferred her care to Giurgiu
who was introduced her to her "Dan," according to prosecutors
Medical personnel decided to give the woman a dose of pain medication and send her home from the hospital
As Giurgiu injected the medication in her arm
He told her to open her mouth and she refused
he wiped off the victim with her hospital gown and told her she was discharged
The patient told hospital administrators when she returned the next day and was admitted to the hospital for further care
Administrators conducted an internal investigation
Authorities said Giurgiu was taken into custody Sept
4 after agreeing to speak to investigators and admitting his involvement in both incidents
NorthShore Public Relations Director Jim Anthony provided a statement on behalf of the organization
"Our patients are our highest priority and we do not tolerate any behavior that threatens their safety or wellbeing," it said
"We have terminated the individual's employment and are cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of the matter
We care deeply about our patients and work diligently to provide a healthy and safe environment."
Anthony declined to say when the allegations were reported
when Giurgiu was suspended or fired and how long he worked for NorthShore or at Glenbrook Hospital
Glenview police said Glenbrook Hospital administrators have cooperated in the investigations and asked anyone who may be a victim or has additional information to contact the Glenview Police Department tip line by phone at 847-901-6055 or by email

a woman in her 50s told police that Giurgiu had also sexually assaulted her while giving her pain medication
He allegedly rubbed his privates against her arm and masturbated

Giurgiu was fired after an internal investigation by the hospital and the police were notified

But Ronnie Deila’s side are in a strong position in group D
five points ahead Zagreb with two games left
Griffiths was adjudged to have nudged a defender but denied the foul
I just stood my ground and the boy jumped into me The ref didn’t even blow straight away
he let me go away and celebrate and then brought it back and started laughing about it
It seemed like every foul he gave against us he started laughing
we dominated large spells of the game and with the chances we created we should have walked away with the three points
It’s just one of those things and in our next game we’ve got to take three points to get through the group stages.”
Celtic had been heading for the last 32 following Stefan Johansen’s brilliant strike after 32 minutes

But after discussions involving the Uefa delegate it was deemed that the game could go ahead

Celtic looked comfortable early on despite the foggy conditions and Johansen forced the first save
Emilio Izaguirre nutmegged an opponent inside the box and drove the ball across for the Norwegian to strike first time from 12 yards but Astra’s goalkeeper Silviu Lung parried his effort
Gordon continued his impressive Europa League form with a stunning save in the 27th minute from Seidou Yahaya’s swerving 20-yard drive that was destined for the top corner
Celtic were ahead five minutes later as Johansen made the most of Mulgrew’s blocked free-kick to score against Astra for the second successive game
The Norwegian won the free-kick after being fouled by Ben Youssef on the edge of the box and stood over the ball before Mulgrew fired into the wall
But a home player sent a very weak clearance straight to Johansen
who responded with a first-time left-footed effort that dipped into the top corner with the aid of a slight deflection
Mulgrew soon saw his bouncing 30-yard effort pushed on to the post by Lung
A precise Astra passing move ended with George Florescu laying the ball off to De Amorim
who curled a first-time effort into the far top corner from wide-left of the box.The former Hibernian striker had the ball in the net seconds later but he was penalised for nudging Cristian Oro as the Romanian defender went to head away after a half-cleared corner was headed back into the box
Gordon had a rare fumble with three minutes left following Florescu’s bouncing long-range strike but Mikael Lustig swept up the danger
There was more drama in injury time when Vincent Laban was sent off for a terrible
with Van Dijk somewhat fortunate to escape with a yellow card for smacking the offender on the back of his head
in the first half we were excellent and scored a nice goal
In the second half we controlled it quite well but they scored a fantastic goal
“There was nothing we could do about it - it was a fantastic shot
We had enough chances to kill the game and to win it - but in the end we have one point and while I am not happy with that
“Maybe we could have played more forward and attacked more
but we seemed quite confident and had control
I am frustrated by that and we have something to work on when we go 1-0 ahead
We have to keep on playing offensively instead of trying to win the game 1-0
