When the idea of filming a segment on the Sunshine Coast for her TV series CARPe diem was suggested, host Carmen Ruiz y Laza needed no coaxing
but the thing that attracts me the most about the Sunshine Coast is the very short ferry ride
That was a weekend well spent,” said Ruiz y Laza
Ruiz y Laza reiterates one of draws of the Coast
is it’s proximity to the City of Vancouver
while that accessibility adds to the area’s appeal
“You have to have a lot of patience with the ferry
But 40 minutes and you're in a whole different world,” said Ruiz y Laza
you really feel like you're away and there's lots of space and it's more rustic.”
Ruiz y Laza says she’d visited the Coast in the past and always enjoyed it
but never truly appreciated all it has to offer until this past visit
the more I want to experience that feeling
what B.C used to be like before concrete took over
“That's really the fundamental reason why I wanted to go back to the Sunshine Coast and bring that to my Canadian viewers.”
Ruiz y Laza is able to do that through VisionTV
which airs her "CARPe diem" episodes across the country
The show also airs on JoyTV and FaithTV — all three shows are part of ZoomerMedia Limited
Ruiz y Laza said the theme of this episode is a wellness weekend
with a second goal to show a visit to the Coast doesn’t have to be restricted to summer
the sun was out and I was using my sunscreen,” said Ruiz y Laza
you can have the peace of the seawall and you can spend more time with the locals than with other tourists
we typically have more liberty on when we travel and how and where
and so I strongly recommend shoulder seasons to everybody
Ruiz y Laza started her weekend in Gibsons and
walked and filmed in and around the harbour before meeting with internationally renowned painter Marleen Vermeulen
to talk about her West Coast land and seascapes and the art scene on the Coast
The crew then headed to Sechelt, where Ruiz y Laza strolled the waterfront with unofficial tourism ambassador Jack Pope, who filled her in on the heralded Sunshine Coast Art Crawl
which in October drew more than 38,000 visitors
Ruiz y Laza also had an opportunity to participate in a Talking Trees Tour in Porpoise Bay with Candace Campo
co-owner of Talaysay Tours and shíshálh Nation member
Campo's ancestral name is xets’emits’a (to always be there)
The Talking Trees nature walk offers an ethnobotany lesson exploring how the shíshálh and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people used
“You learn a lot and I believe that if you did that Talking Trees tour with Candace 20 times
you would learn something new because there's no way that you can learn everything that she can teach in a lifetime,” says Ruiz y Laza
“There are always opportunities to do it again and learn again
Ruiz y Laza also had the opportunity to visit the spa at Painted Boat Resort in Madeira Park, accompanied by Canadian wellness expert Cheryl MacKinnon, who specializes in creating "accessible wellness to transformative travel experiences" through her website WellnessTravelBC.com
Together they enjoyed spa treatments infused with mineral-rich seaweed and salts
the garden is a tranquil oasis with cascading waterfall
I want to be able to go downstairs and get a treatment and enjoy a steam room
“The Painted Boat was selected for me to visit because it stands out for all of that it offers in that regard
And it had a delicious restaurant with a very good wine list
Ruiz y Laza and crew topped off their Coast weekend with visits to Egmont
Princess Louisa Marine Provincial Park and Chatterbox Falls
And while Ruiz y Laza was enjoying spa time, her more adventurous crew member Dean Atwal, enjoyed a guided Zodiac tour on the ocean with the new Egmont Adventure Centre
with a focus on “blue-water therapy.”
“Everything I need for a getaway is on the Sunshine Coast
I've done those shoots as well,” says Ruiz y Laza
“And there’s the packing and what am I going to take and does it fit
you can stick everything in your car and take off.”
The Sunshine Coast episode of CARPe diem airs on FaithTV, Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. The episode previously aired on JoyTV and VisionTV is still available at visiontv.ca/shows/carpe-diem

play iconMatt Laza UNLEASHES on Tory in FURIOUS GB News row over grooming gangs
A heated exchange erupted on GB News between former Labour adviser Matthew Laza and ex-Tory MP Anna Firth over the grooming gangs controversy
Laza accused the Conservative Party of hypocrisy
particularly targeting Kemi Badenoch's record as Minister for Children
and she didn't mention the issue once from the despatch box," Laza said during the fiery debate
"It's outrageous the Tories are jumping on this issue
Labour has defended its position against calls for a national inquiry into grooming gangs
pointing to its support for local investigations
A Labour spokesperson said the party "will welcome and support an independent investigation commissioned by Oldham Council which puts victims' voices at its heart."
The party highlighted its previous backing of inquiries in Telford and Rotherham
as well as the national overarching inquiry into child abuse that reported in 2022
Labour's safeguarding minister Jess Phillips stated it is for local councils to decide on investigations
saying the government will not "intervene" in the Oldham inquiry
Firth attempted to defend Badenoch by citing her "powerful speech" at the recent Conservative conference
suggesting it was absurd to imply grooming gangs weren't an issue a decade ago
The GB News panel spoke about Labour's decision not to vote in favour of a national inquiry
"You might get re-selected because you're parroting the issue," Laza told Firth
The exchange grew more heated when Firth insisted "It's come out now and she has taken the action needed," prompting further criticism from Laza about Badenoch's previous silence on the issue
The row comes amid growing pressure for a national inquiry into grooming gangs across multiple English towns
Conservative shadow ministers Chris Philp and Alicia Kearns have written to the Home Secretary demanding a "time-limited
The scandal saw girls as young as 11 groomed and raped across towns including Oldham
A 2014 report by Professor Alexis Jay revealed approximately 1,400 girls were abused between 1997 and 2013 while authorities failed to intervene
The debate continues as Laza defended Labour's current approach
stating "This government is implementing every single one of the Alexis Jay report."
with Professor Jay herself expressing frustration in late 2023 that none of the probe's 20 recommendations had been implemented more than two years after its conclusion
The controversy has gained renewed attention as Tory leader Kemi Badenoch wrote that a public inquiry is "long overdue," declaring "2025 must be the year that the victims start to get justice."

play iconMatthew Laza says Labour will be a 'one term government'
Labour has been told to "get a grip" of the migrant crisis as figures reveal more than 30,000 small boat migrants have crossed to the UK since Sir Keir Starmer came to power
who suggested the Government's failure to address the issue could limit Labour to just "one term in office"
The comments come as GB News exclusively revealed the grim milestone of migrant arrivals under the current administration
Labour's border security policies face mounting criticism as crossings continue at an alarming rate despite the Government's pledge to "smash the gangs" responsible
Matthew Laza said that Labour could become a "one term" government
Matthew Goodwin said: "These numbers 30,000 since Labour came to power
But people out there are saying this is making a mockery of our claim to be a sovereign
self-governing nation because a nation that cannot control its borders is not a serious nation
What on earth is Yvette Cooper seriously going to do about this?"
Matthew Laza said: "I think the biggest problem with this is the impact it has on democracy
because at the moment just people are saying the same
but they're effectively seeing nothing being done
Nobody is either smashing the gangs or stopping the boats and about to keep coming in the hands of the gangs
"So what it seems is if you're sitting at home watching the program
And that's what pushes people to make sure."
Around 300 small boat migrants crossed illegally to the UK today in six small boats
taking the total number of Channel migrant arrivals since Labour came to power to more than 30,300
Today marked the eighth straight day of crossings
with approximately 1,900 arriving at the Border Force processing centre in Dover since last Thursday
with more than 6,100 Channel boat migrants having made the illegal journey to the UK so far this year
This figure represents a 40 per cent increase compared to the 4,306 who had crossed at the same point last year
The escalating numbers pile more pressure on the Prime Minister to introduce a deterrent scheme
similar to the previous Government's Rwanda policy
Labour created a Border Security Command and diverted millions of pounds
previously allocated for the Rwanda scheme
Maritime security sources have told GB News that law enforcement without a deterrent alongside is "doomed to failure"
One senior source said: "No one expected instant results from the push against the criminal gangs."
"But we're almost nine months down the track
and we'd certainly expect to see even a modest impact on gang activity by now."
Brett Laza of Phelan will serve as a “Guardian of the Flame” as his team carries a torch before the start of the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin
and will then travel through Europe to Germany
Laza will join the Final Leg Torch Run Team as they carry the “Flame of Hope” through Brandenburg
“This is a huge honor to represent Southern California while carrying the Flame of Hope throughout Berlin,” said Laza
part of the Special Olympics Southern California family and a graduate of Serrano High School
The final leg by the “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics” team is considered the organization’s largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle in the world
the Special Olympics event in Europe is expected to be one of the largest sporting and humanitarian events of its kind this year
Chosen to carry the torchAfter the opening ceremony
an estimated 7,000 athletes from over 170 nations will compete in 24 sports across Berlin’s state-of-the-art competition venues
They will be supported by 3,000 coaches and an estimated 20,000 volunteers
The games are expected to attract 6,000 family members
more than 2,000 national and international media
Laza is one of eight International Special Olympics athletes chosen out of a pool of nearly 30 nominees to participate in the final torch run
Laza will not participate in the sporting events
but will support athletes from the sidelines
who also coach with Special Olympics in the city of Fontana
said they are proud of their son’s hard work and accomplishments over the years
“Brett is also the first Special Olympics athlete to participate on the planning committee for the final torch run,” Kim Laza told the Daily Press
he’s been a part of several Zoom conference meetings with people from the U.S
Brett Laza was selected as the Bill Shumard Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Hall of Fame Gala Athlete of the Year in Tustin
Law enforcement teamThe Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg is made up of 109 members
eight International Special Olympics athletes
and up to 32 German Special Olympics athletes and logistics personnel
Over 100,000 law enforcement members in all 50 U.S
and 44 countries contribute to law enforcement torch-run efforts annually as Guardians of the Flame
The flame honors the spirit of the Special Olympics global movement and delivers a message of hope to communities where people with intellectual disabilities continue to fight for acceptance and inclusion
Laza is no stranger to the Special Olympic World Games
having the honor of traveling to Athens in 2011 for the Torch Lighting Ceremony and participating in the Final Leg Torch Run in 2015 in Los Angeles
Brett Laza said when he ran with the torch in Greece
with most of the weight coming from the fuel used to light the flame
Laza has been involved with Special Olympics for 19 years
He has also been involved with law enforcement teams for over nine years

play iconEmma Woolfe in furious debate
A heated debate took place on GB News between Emma Woolfe and Matthew Laza regarding Prime Minister Keir Starmer's acceptance of gifts and hospitality
The discussion centred on the estimated £107,145 in tickets
benefits and hospitality Starmer has received since becoming Labour leader in 2020
"He doesn't need thousands of pounds of clothing for his wife
he doesn't need accommodation paid for
but I was kind of expecting a bit better from them."
Woolfe interjected: "Can you save the hypocrisy
Laza said: "I think all these things were taken before he was Prime Minister
Woolfe asked: "What is Lord Ali getting in return
he's been a Labour supporter for 30 years
He's a very actively involved with all levels of the Labour Party
he's very close to an MP called Chevron McDonough
The controversy surrounding Starmer's gifts has intensified amidst Labour's plans to cut winter fuel payments for pensioners
Keir Starmer was gifted Taylor Swift tickets
Notable donations included Taylor Swift tickets
Political commentator Emily Hewertson criticised Starmer
stating: "Whilst he's snatching the Winter Fuel Allowance from pensioners
it seems the only difficult decisions he's been making is which £2,000 pair of designer sunglasses to nab from one of his mates."
The Prime Minister defended accepting the gifts
He told reporters: "If I don't accept a gift of hospitality
never going to an Arsenal game again because I can't accept hospitality is pushing it a bit far."
telling Sky News: "I have to say nobody has mentioned it to me and I haven't had a single email about it."
the opposition Conservative party has accused Starmer of hypocrisy
particularly as Labour asks ordinary people to tighten their belts
Rayner and Reeves are all understood to have decided they will not take donations to pay for clothes in future

but taught me love and being attentive to others,” says photographer Anna Laza to The Phoblographer in an interview
“She was a doctor in a small village of Romania and had a talent for feeling the body and its needs
There’re more meanings in my photography
which I let the viewers read themselves.” Anna’s work is prime conceptual photography
This is a creative project that moves beyond simply capturing a scene
It catapults itself into the surreal and develops a symbiotic relationship within a sea of emotions and feelings

It’s easy to be fascinated with Anna’s work
She leans into black and white with her Metaphysical Body Landscapes project and finds ways to make the body resemble the land around us
She uses very specific lighting and contrasts to make us consider what parts of nature these photos resemble
At times you feel as if you’re looking at a photo straight from a drone and converted to monochrome
you’re transported to some hills in the desert
Anna does a fantastic job of keeping us aware of the idea that these are landscapes
It ultimately reminds us of our own connection to nature
It made me wonder how this series would’ve and could’ve worked in color with body paint
“One level of perception is aesthetical
The curves of a woman’s body remind the landscapes
“I was using a Canon 7D with 50mm lenses and a set of 3 to 5 impulse lamps for the series
This camera has been with me for many years and I know its possibilities.”
Anna Laza: My way into photography started as being a model
The world of professional photographers is small even in a big city
I had and still have good friends among them
So that’s how approximately 15 years ago I got introduced to photography
But I always had more interest in the technical side and shooting process than modeling
So I got my first camera and started to search for my style in the universe of photography
Anna Laza: In the project “Metaphysical Body Landscapes” there are several messages I wanted to reveal
So the conceptual art style suited the best
it is very strong and very fragile at the same time
It is giving support and matures you from the first days of your life
but some part of you knows the comfort of a mother’s body
You were very small and the body was like a huge unknown but gracious landscape for you
We are small in comparison to the landscapes as we were when we were born
Our human and our natural landscapes can be easily damaged
So both of them should be treated with care.
this project is homage to my grandmother who wasn’t into art but taught me love and to be attentive to others
She was a doctor in a small village of Romania and had a talent for feeling the body and its needs. There’re more meanings in my photography
These give a greater variety of interpretations
Anna Laza: The concept of the series best-suited women with pale skin
I was searching for thin models with an exact body type
Specific angles also helped in reinforcing an angularity I sought.
Anna Laza: The series “Metaphysical Body Landscapes” is about nature and our deep connection with it
My wish was to take images from my mind to the world and challenge myself with this task
There are no concrete artists who inspired me
it came as a deep wish to show the beautiful landscapes of beloved Romania in a metaphysical and fresh way
The landscape photographers I like most are Sebastiao Salgado and Ansel Adams
What I like in their work and what I tried to put in my project is the sublimity of nature.
I saw my body of work in monochrome as it represents eternity and the imperishability of landscapes
And slowly they transform into another shape of the body
The black here symbolizes the deep sky of outer space.
Anna Laza: The series consists of 120 images
It was a challenge shooting and searching for specific individual peculiarities of the model
With intuition to see what landscape is hidden in her body and try to make it visible on the camera
Now I can say with certainty that each body has something unique.
Anna Laza: As I’m doing intellectual photography that is more about reflection than connecting to many people
so the pandemic didn’t really affect me in an artistic way
Now I’m shooting several projects for which I carefully search models and build trustful relations
I think limits boost creativity and can be good for an artist
“As I’m doing intellectual photography that is more about reflexion than connecting to many people
so the pandemic didn’t really affect me in an artistic way.”
My childhood I’ve spent at my grandmother’s house in Romania
Seeing human’s strong bond with the earth
landscapes around influenced my understanding of earth beauty and men’s connection with it.
night- all merge together and flow into each other
And landscapes of the earth are seen in body curves.
my grandmother passed away and I felt loss of spiritual connection with nature.
To reconnect I start to search the Landscapes in body in my photography

PHELAN — Local athlete Brett Laza brought home the gold during the recent Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, where he competed alongside some 4,000 athletes.
A resident of Phelan, the 26-year-old Laza participated in the 2018 edition of the weeklong Special Olympics in July, where athletes from across the country competed in 16 sports ranging from volleyball to swimming to powerlifting.
Laza kicked off the opening ceremonies of the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics by carrying a sign representing Southern California into Husky Stadium at the University of Washington.
During the competition, Laza won gold in the 200-meter race and the shot put. He also earned a silver medal in the 400, where he set a new personal record with a time of 58.71 seconds.
“Brett did a fantastic job training for his first major Special Olympics,” said his mother, Kim Laza. “Mike and I are proud of all that he has accomplished at the games and in life.”
Brett Laza, who has "intellectual disabilities" and was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy, has been involved with Special Olympics Western San Bernardino since 2004. He has competed in tennis, floor hockey, volleyball and other sports at various levels, including the Southern California championships, his mother said.
He is considered a veteran in track and field, as well as a “Global Messenger for Special Olympics,” where he promotes disability awareness and the importance of acceptance and inclusion.
In 2015, Brett Laza traveled to Athens, Greece, for the Torch Lighting Ceremony for the Special Olympics World Games,
He was also a part of the Final Leg Torch Run Team preceding the games that finished at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Daily Press previously reported.
Brett Laza and nine law enforcement officers on his team carried the torch across California until they arrived at the opening ceremonies in Los Angeles.
The young athlete keeps a strict training regimen, with his Saturdays spent in the Rialto area working out with his friends who are part of Special Olympics Inland Empire.
During the week, he keeps fit by training with his father. He also does a bit of motivational speaking when time allows, Kim Laza said.
When he’s not competing, Brett Laza works as a production trainee at VIP, Inc. in Hesperia, helps at his father’s welding business and takes classes at Victor Valley College. He also volunteers the High Desert Church campus in Phelan.
Brett Laza will sit out the next Special Olympics World Summer Games, which will be held in March 2019 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
“The athletes are pre-chosen and only four athletes from Southern California will participate,” Kim Laza said. “Despite Brett not making the cut, he loves to compete and there are all sorts of athletic activities for him to participate in.”
On August 18, Brett Laza will test his strength, stamina and endurance during the Special Olympics Southern California's Plane Pull and fundraiser at the Long Beach Airport, where teams will compete in pulling a 124,000-pound FedEx jet aircraft.
“Brett is a busy guy and there’s no sign of him slowing him down,” Kim Laza said. “We love Brett’s drive and we support him all the way.”

we rank Rage Against The Machine’s hardest hitters
As revolutionary in their genre-smashing sound as their inflammatory politics, few (if any) outfits have had the game-changing impact Rage Against The Machine delivered across the space of three explosive LPs
Bringing together New York-born guitarist (and Harvard graduate) Tom Morello
vocalist Zack de la Rocha (whose paternal grandfather was a Mexican revolutionary)
bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk in the political powder keg of early ’90s Los Angeles
Somehow taking agitprop into the mainstream
their unequivocal message and eye-catching activism – from 1993’s naked protest against kitchen-sink censors the Parents Music Resource Center to starting a riot at the 2000 Democratic National Convention – won over a legion of fans that somehow only continued to swell after their initial disbandment in 2000
Although the band reunited for live shows, and its constituent members have been prolific in their output with projects as diverse as Audioslave, One Day As A Lion, WAKRAT, Prophets Of Rage
The Nightwatchman and The Last Internationale
our Top 20 focuses only on RATM compositions from that golden period between 1992 and 1999
Maybe – just maybe – there’ll be more to follow in the years to come
Born Of A Broken Man is a peculiarly personal reckoning from Zack on the fractured legacy left by his father: trailblazing Chicano artist Roberto "Beto" de la Rocha
A member of hugely influential collective Los Four
Beto would divorce Zack's mother and subsequently suffer a mental breakdown where he destroyed many of his own paintings before retreating into shadowy solitude with only his dog-eared bible for company
Transitioning from downbeat despondency through seething resentment to an ultimate no-fate-but-what-you-make defiance ('Born of a broken man
but not a broken man!') there's real power in its portrayal of the internal struggle against hereditary self-destruction and the unquenchable thirst to be better than those who came before
Revolver finds the band tapping into their resentment for the 'festering' dynamic between husband and wife at the heart of so many traditional western households
and the brutal domestic abuse that is its consequence
Zack's near-whisper on the verses ('A-he's a prize-fighter / And he bought rings and he owns kin / And now he's swinging / And now he's the champion') pokes at the pathetic notions of behind-closed-doors privacy that so often allows this injustice to go unpunished
The explosive chorus – hinting at a mother reaching breaking point and murdering her husband with the titular pistol – lands with equal measures of catharsis and tragedy
This was Rage at their most confrontationally audacious: taking the opportunity to stand atop the music industry mountain and preach a radical message to the entitled consumers most in need of hearing it
Showcasing a rhythm-section unlike any other in rock and metal
Take The Power Back felt like a real showcase of the depth of sound
atmosphere and concussive impact Rage could summon from their ostensibly stripped-back three-instrument setup
educational system – and the inherent links between blind conformism and the American dream – it was a powerful early statement
even name-checking 1970s militant organisation The Weathermen
The image of 'complacent students' listening to their teacher reeling-off the same 'bullshit that he learned in school' still feels like a powerful call to break systemic cycles of ignorance
Starting with a riff that could've been nicked from Smashing Pumpkins
Down Rodeo shapeshifts into one of the band's funkiest
most lyrically powerful blends of hip-hop and punk rock
Referring to the uber-affluent Rodeo Drive community in Beverley Hills
these people ain’t seen a brown skin man since their grandparents bought one’ highlight the historic racial inequality ingrained into the fabric of America
Although there remains plenty of seething anger at its heart
there's also an element of playful fantasy fulfilment to this banger – and a subversive challenge for California's wealthy liberal elite to match words with actions
it remains brilliantly unapologetic in its real-world delineation of right and wrong
If the through-line of Rage's third album is the dynamic specific to Los Angeles – where black
white and hispanic communities collide in the city's patchwork of neighbourhoods
and the contrast between the impoverished and super-rich is visibly at its starkest – Born As Ghosts lays bare the implications that being born a couple of hundred yards down the street can have for an individual's future prospects
Debunking the old American dream that all are welcome
and anyone can be what they want to be if they're willing to work for it
guns and alarms' keeping immigrants at arm's length
and the school system as the 'tomb' keeping their U.S.-born children from climbing the social ladder
Smouldering away with a treacly bassline before fully catching fire
it stresses that such inequity will prove to be the burning fuse on a powder keg soon to explode
Originally featuring on the soundtrack to Boys N The Hood director John Singleton's powerfully politicised 1995 college drama Higher Learning (with a heavier hip-hop feel and a titular 'the' in place of its eventual 'tha'), Year Of Tha Boomerang had its guitars brought up in the mix and was featured as an Evil Empire prime cut
Particularly high-minded in its reference to Jean-Paul Sartre's advocacy for the use of violence by colonised peoples against their colonisers in his preface to the 1961 edition of Frantz Fanon's seminal critique The Wretched Of The Earth
the song examines issues of minority representation
institutionalised racism and sexism as hurdles to be overcome to reach true societal balance
With instruments twisted into primal dissonance and Zack in full swagger
Tied, inextricably in many fans' minds, to the Wall Street-crashing stunt recorded in its Michael Moore-directed music video
Sleep Now In The Fire is often regarded as emblematic of stock
late-era RATM where the catchy rap-rock was more clearly defined than the actual message at hand
although the anti-capitalist sentiment of their managing to get the New York Stock Exchange closed for those few minutes on January 26
it distracts somewhat from the actual lyrical content
Dealing with the United States' systemic oppression of non-white indigenous peoples
The Santa Maria' and the conquest of Native Americans through the 19th Century African slave trade right
through to one-sided military action against Japanese and Vietnamese civilians
the song was a challenge for everyday Americans to step back and reconsider their own history
most couldn't resist banging along to a tune that's catchier than a noose
Confidently referencing complimentary hip-hop slang in its title
there was a clear double-meaning to the opening track of Rage's self-titled debut: the song that would light the fuse on the most volatile of catalogues in all of popular music
With Tim's iconic bassline eventually setting off Brad's concussive beat
the song is a scattergun attack on 'landlords and power whores' perpetuating a cycle of social inequality
The accompanying artwork was far more direct
with a video expressly supporting Peruvian revolutionary/terrorist Maoist militia Sendero Luminoso and their leader Abimael Guzman
while the single artwork featured Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick's iconic two-tone interpretation of legendary Marxist guerrilla leader Che Guevara
If listeners didn't know what they were in for
Originally conceived as a tribute to California's Chicano natives
Evil Empire standout People Of The Sun evolved into a song about the Zapatista movement: an army of indigenous farmers (the EZLN) who rose up against the Mexican state and drug cartels in the country's southernmost Chiapas state
Coming in at a concise 150-seconds and featuring some of Tom Morello's most innovative guitarwork – pencils and wrenches reportedly dragged across his strings – it cuts through five centuries of colonialism and straight to the point
firestarter lyrics ('That vulture came to try and steal your name
this is for the people of the sun!') pop with militant power
The penultimate track on Rage's last collection of original material to date
Ashes In The Fall finds Zack at his bleakest and most evocatively abstract
imagining a society collapsed beneath the greed and hypocrisy of money men
at the oasis that hides the graves beneath the master's hill / Buried for drinking the river's water while shackled to the the line at the empty well.') The urgency of Tom's guitarwork – nails-on-a-chalkboard screech swelling into a hurricane of sound – coupled with Zack's predictions of traditional industrial decline and the rise of an American prison industrial complex make clear that this is a final-straw warning for society on the brink
controls the future: who controls the present
controls the past.' Repurposing the party slogan of the Oceania government from George Orwell's horribly prophetic masterpiece 1984
Testify highlights the modern truth that control of information – and public perception – is tangible currency for crooked political leaders
Hammering home that the mass media's corrupt power brokers are tools of the superpowers they should be holding to account
Zack's indictment of intoxicating Hollywood glamour and tabloid mudslinging rings ever truer in the era of fake news
Tom's rampant deployment of particularly OTT distortion can even be read as another layer of metaphorical commentary on a world where playing straight and clean is nowhere near as ear-catching as muddling things up
almost 30 years' overexposure to what's unquestionably Rage's biggest song has led many to forget why its one of their best
A feast of unforgettably stripped back riffs and atmospheric percussion
I won't do what you tell me!') might've become almost comically synonymous with idle adolescent rebellion (and breaking the reign of talent show The X-Factor over the UK's Christmas Chart) in the years since
but take away that baggage and there's still real power burning in there
A jagged anti-authoritarian warcry against the badge-wearing 'chosen whites' that openly highlights the history of collaboration between law enforcement and white supremacism
its message still has more relevance to contemporary America than many "fans" would like to admit
Another track that rails against the blinkered worldview peddled by mass media outlets
Bullet In The Head is all the more powerful for its invitation to listeners to seek out the facts and form opinions for themselves
would people be truly prepared to tackle the constrictive machinery of society – whether on a tribal level in relation to religious or gang affiliations
Inspired by triumphalist American coverage of the fallout of the first Iraq War
where the deaths of thousands of innocent citizens were whitewashed out of the picture
they reasoned that passive audiences blindly consuming this skewed portrayal intellectually might as well be the ones with bullets in their heads
The lead single from The Battle Of Los Angeles felt like a bridge between the bombastic rap-metal sound of old and a rockier
and would go on to become one of Rage's most popular releases
Pessimistically outlining the futility of the United States two-party political system (three years after Kang & Kodos had more gently lampooned the same ideas in The Simpsons) they pre-empted the beige chaos of the 2000 presidential election between George W
while giving broader focus to the more historic use of that 'low intensity warfare.' The song would also achieve immortality as the recipient of a GRAMMY for Best Hard Rock Performance and – more importantly – on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 soundtrack
Dropping curtain on Rage's 1992 debut and remaining
Freedom still feels like a powerful distillation of the righteous anger at the heart of their music
mass media and all-powerful corporations to lull the masses into a sense of "freedom" while curtailing that same liberty in many more meaningful senses
we're throttled by one of Tom's most bombastic riffs before Zack's emphatic howl and a climactic clatter of feedback drop us back to earth
The powerful music video tells the story of Leonard Peltier
the American Indian Movement leader who many believe was framed for the murder of two FBI agents at Pine Ridge Reservation
contributing his 'I've got no patience now...' refrain every bit as seamlessly
Rage mightn't have been the inventors of many of the ideas they espoused
spreading that fire amongst a self-satisfied Western youth

This new advance could pave the way for smaller
and more effective micro flying robots for environmental monitoring
and other complex transmission systems to achieve the up-and-down motion of the wings
Taking inspiration from bees and other flying insects
researchers from Bristol’s Faculty of Engineering
led by Professor of Robotics Jonathan Rossiter
have successfully demonstrated a direct-drive artificial muscle system
called the Liquid-Amplified Zipping Actuator (LAZA)
that achieves wing motion using no rotating parts or gears
The LAZA system greatly simplifies the flapping mechanism
enabling future miniaturization of flapping robots down to the size of insects
Their paper in the journal Science Robotics
shows how a pair of LAZA-powered flapping wings can provide more power compared with insect muscle of the same weight
enough to fly a robot across a room at 18 body lengths per second
They also demonstrated how the LAZA can deliver consistent flapping over more than one million cycles
important for making flapping robots that can undertake long-haul flights
The team expects the LAZA to be adopted as a fundamental building block for a range of autonomous insect-like flying robots
lead author and developer of the LAZA system said: “With the LAZA
we apply electrostatic forces directly on the wing
lightweight flapping micro-air vehicles for future applications
like autonomous inspection of off-shore wind turbines.”

and the bell had just rung to end second period at Dunnellon High School
Isaiah Valcius stepped into the hallway and looked for his classmate Eleazar Quetant
So close that they refer to each other as “brother” or “cousin”
instead of “friend,” Valcius wanted to hear how the weekend had gone and just catch up with some small talk before each rushed off to his next class
called “Yaza” and “Laza” by those closest to him
Valcius looked around before finding Laza near an empty classroom
After motioning his DHS football teammate inside
Laza asked Valcius if he had heard the news
“They’re gone,” Laza said
Someone shot and killed them last night.”
Laza broke down in front of someone.
“He was devastated,” Valcius said
“I got out of my class and just sat with him
And he’ll do the same for me.”
Valcius’ voice then trailed off
“It was really rough,” he said
“I’d never seen him like that.”
and that was very much by Quetant’s parents’ design
The youngest of five children to Jean Phillippe-Quetant and Erna Plancher-Quetant
Laza was told early in his life that those who were focused
regimented and professional got the best results
sister Tabitha (22) and Laza (18) – were taught to plan out to the minute time to do chores
Kevin said they were expected to accomplish “49 or 50 tasks before we went to sleep at night.” All plates were to be finished at meals because “you should be grateful for all you have,” Nehemy said his mother often repeated
Laza wore a suit every day of his freshman year at DHS and he memorizes phone numbers like everyone had to do before cells existed
evident by their jobs – he was a pastor
she was a nurse – service to others was very important to them
They raised their children with love and discipline
Erna was known to quietly wake her kids and husband at 2 a.m
to gather around the bed of a sleeping child so six voices could serenade him or her with “Happy Birthday.” The children also had days where they were awakened at 4 a.m
to help clean their home or listen to lectures from their father
“We didn’t grow up like a normal family,” Laza said
traveling around the world as a missionary to help create better lives for those less fortunate
meaning the children spent a lot of time with a babysitter or by themselves
They bonded through the serious moments and created their own fun
Tabitha said she grew up scared to sleep alone
he would cover her with teddy bears for protection and ask for storytime
but when he’d pick a scary story and then would be knocked out right away
that didn’t help me,” Tabitha said with a laugh
she would have to end the arrangement when Laza was 11 or 12
“He was too messy,” Tabitha said
She added that some of her favorite childhood memories involved watching movies or playing games with her brothers while they’d all share a pot of Ramen noodles that Kevin would make
Laza bonded with his brothers through basketball and video games
Dan said the triplets used to take turns beating Laza at “Halo”
“Kung Fu Panda” and “Super Smash Bros.” and then would talk trash for hours
That brought out the competitive side of Laza for perhaps the first time
as he practiced whenever he got the chance
“We would pummel him and would make him give up,” Dan said
Laza also followed his brothers onto the football field
They all played at West Port with Valcius’ older brother
was considered the best player of the bunch prior to Laza
190-pound defensive end who leads the Tigers (9-0) with six sacks heading into Friday night’s FHSAA Class 5A
During the summer Laza knew his senior season was going to be different than he initially imagined
there was the coronavirus and all of the changes it brought
he found out his parents would be moving to Croix-des-Broquets
to build a church and orphanage for the Haitian people they grew up with
who stayed home to work and raise the children when her husband went on earlier missions
“I saw the rich side and the poor side of Haiti,” Laza said
“The cultures are very different for each
My father got a huge truck and filled it with mattresses
computers and other things the people there would need.”
But there were ominous indicators their parents also had personal concerns
they made out living wills for the first time and talked openly that if anything were to happen to them
They left in August but had frequent Zoom chats with their kids
“Everything seemed to be going OK,” Laza said
“My mom joked that I needed to call her more.”
He answered and was shot once in the head by two intruders
went to check on it and was shot twice in the head before their place was robbed
Nehemy got a call from someone who worked with his parents saying an accident had happened
who was skeptical because the family would get “scam calls from Haiti” on occasion seeking money
Kevin called the person in Haiti back and asked to speak to his parents
he called the person again and asked what was going on
He was then told his parents had been killed
“I wish I had never done that,” Kevin said
he looked at the photo and threw his phone to the ground
who had both fallen asleep in the living room
They looked at each other and said “Kevin” before racing up the stairs
Tabitha followed him and asked if he was OK
“He just went into the bathroom and took a really long shower,” said Tabitha
who lives in Clearwater but was visiting Kevin
Nehemy and Laza for the weekend (Dan lives in St
“His eyes were puffy and red when he came out
but he wasn’t going to do that in front of us.”
It took weeks before the family got clarity on what happened
Kevin said he believes his parents knew the two men who killed them
thinking they may have done odd jobs or tended to the cows on the property
Police told Kevin the men had gone to their gang leader to get approval to rob the Quetants
The men explained they thought there was money at the house and that there had been talk of putting up another building to help others.
but when they came back and reported they had murdered the couple
the gang leader killed them because they had only been given permission to steal
people in the neighborhood killed the gang leader
“I don’t know why they had to harm my parents,” Tabitha said
“If they had come in and said they were robbing the house
my mother and father would have let them and prayed for them while they did it
They weren’t concerned with material things
my father told me that if anyone ever robbed it while I was working to let them
the news devastated the rest of the family
“He even went to practice,” Tigers’ coach Price Harris said
“I couldn’t imagine … .”
Later in the week Laza did take a couple of days off
but he’s been more intense this year,” Valcius said
“He’s hitting a little bit harder in games and practice.”
Laza had a big sack in DHS’s 30-28 regular-season defeat of VHS on Oct
He added three more in Dunnellon’s 13-7 playoff victory at North Marion
a game that happened six days after he buried his parents in Fort Myers (and simultaneously with the Tigers’ 50-0 opening-round win at Eastside
though Kevin’s bank account has taken a hit
“I promise him $50 for every sack and $20 for every tackle,” Kevin said
“I told him after the North Marion game that I needed to pay him in installments.”
The family also has tried to do things together like go to Disney World for the first time a few weeks ago (Laza did cut the trip short after about three rides because he needed to get back for practice)
Each sibling said that if they were going to lose their parents
they are glad the deaths were quick and painless
They also take solace and comfort in knowing their mom and dad died together
Laza has tried to deal with his emotions mostly solo
Each of his siblings describe him as introverted until you get to know him and then
saying “football is my counselor,” much like his parents were his teachers
“I’m very thankful for all I learned from them,” Laza said
“And I don’t know if they could have lived without each other
so it means a lot that they don’t have to

Brett Laza said he doesn’t have a special eating plan when he trains
but did say that he’s fond of the Grande Burrito from Baja Taco
"I don't have any major plans for the future," Brett Laza said
"I just want to do my best in what ever I do."

MIAMI SPRINGS
– There was a small tribute on Tuesday at a gas station in Miami-Dade County after a 56-year-old man who worked there died
who worked as a mechanic at the Westar gas station at North Royal Poinciana Boulevard and Curtiss Parkway in Miami Springs
said he had served customers there for more than a decade and was loved by all
The memorial started after learning of Laza’s death in a car crash Friday
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Laza lost control of his minivan while trying to avoid another driver on the Florida Turnpike at Southwest Eighth Street
Laza and a passenger ended up underwater in an alligator-infested retention pond
Snipers stood guard ready to shoot and kill alligators
The passenger was Laza’s 80-year-old mother who survived the crash and remained hospitalized at the HCA Florida Kendall Hospital
formerly known as the Kendall Regional Medical Center

RUTHERFORD — The Rutherford girls volleyball team was able to get the upper hand against powerhouse Bogota on its floor in the first game of the Group 1 state semifinals
And the Lady Bulldogs were looking to go for the kill in the second game
But Rutherford let the Bucs off the hook in the second game and could never recover fully
The Lady Bulldogs had one of their best chances of making a group final in recent years go up in smoke as they fell
Rutherford got some great fire power from its top hitters Jenna Rogers and Catherine Laza
and Emilia McCarthy and Anna DeCesare added eight each
DeCesare served up 30 assists for the night
"I'm very proud of this team and how they played hard and fought," said Rutherford coach Helen Antzoulides
But in the second and third game Rogers and Laza did not get enough of their chances
"We never got the ball to Jenna (Rogers) as much as we wanted," said Antzoulides
And Bogota's hard hitters like Nylene Mateo and Jaelyn Grullon would be able to get their hits against the Rutherford defense
Antzoulides was telling her charges to stay focused
"When you have an intense game you want them to keep their focus," said the Rutherford coach
In the first game it was toe-to-toe for most of the game until Rutherford notched four out of five points to give it the advantage at 23-20
But the Bucs would tie it up at 23 in the blink of the eye before Laza decided it with two powerful shots and the 25-23 victory
Bogota came storming out in the second game and took leads of 11-5
Rutherford regrouped in the deciding third game and even took a 13-12 lead after a Laza kill
But the momentum changed at that point as the Bucs scored nine straight points to grab a 21-13 advantage before Rodgers registered a kill to cut the Bogota lead to 21-14
Rutherford would never get closer as it fell
Despite being knocked out of the state tournament Rutherford finished with a 26-4 record
including going undefeated in winning the NJIC Colonial Division title
It was the third year in a row of having at least a share of the Colonial championship

called the Liquid-Amplified Zipping Actuator (Laza)
which achieves wing motion using no rotating parts or gears.
The Laza system greatly simplifies the flapping mechanism
enabling future miniaturisation of flapping robots down to the size of insects.
the team showed how a pair of Laza-powered flapping wings could provide more power than insect muscle of the same weight
enough to fly a robot across a room at a speed of 18 body lengths per second.
They also demonstrated how the system can deliver consistent flapping over more than one million cycles
important for making flapping robots that can undertake long flights.
The researchers said they expect Laza to be adopted as a fundamental building block for a range of autonomous insect-like flying robots

Professor Rossiter said: “Making smaller and better-performing flapping wing micro-robots is a huge challenge
Laza is an important step toward autonomous flying robots that could be as small as insects and perform environmentally critical tasks such as plant pollination
and exciting emerging roles such as finding people in collapsed buildings.”

Flexible spaces at our head office in Westminster
Every year, the Royal Society of Chemistry welcomes a selection of leading figures from our community as Honorary Fellows
we have welcomed renowned and influential people with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences
from recent additions like Nobel Laureates Professors Frances Arnold and John B
Goodenough to long-standing members of our community and supporters of science communication
Our 2020 intake of candidates invited and accepted to become Honorary Fellows are:
Iwuoha CSci CChem FRSC is an electrochemist and Professor in South Africa
His academic achievements are exceptional given the transformational landscape in South Africa that he has worked in over the last 20 years
He has published over 250 papers and graduated over 60 PhD and 70 MSc students and established a world-leading sensor laboratory at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town (this was the University for people of colour during the Apartheid era)
a Fellow of the African Academy of Science in 2018 and in addition to being on the Editorial board of journals such as Analytical Chemistry and Bioelectrochemistry he has advised South African and international Governments and organisations on a wide range of topics including energy storage and smart sensors
He has won several awards in South Africa and as stated is one of the highest ranked researchers in South Africa
He has given many invited and plenary talks and is without doubt an outstanding scientist and strong advocate for the chemical sciences
what distinguishes Iwuoha and makes his case for HonFRSC compelling is his training and support of African scientists at all levels in particular female scientists
Establishing world-class research facilities in a country emerging from Apartheid is no small achievement but the number of students who have gone on to take prominent positions in African institutes and companies is incredible
Their impact as role models and their contribution to scientific development and literacy is a huge legacy
Some examples of Professor Iwuoha’s impact on the chemical sciences are presented
In January 2001 when Professor Iwuoha started work at UWC as the Professor and Chair of Physical Chemistry
physical chemistry was the most challenging of all the branches of chemistry
which was taken for granted as being the norm
He reformed and modernised the way the course was presented
by linking the practical to the lectures and introducing computational and modelling algorithms that enabled the students to relate properly with hitter-to abstract concepts of physical chemistry and chemical physics
Students with problems were quickly identified and supported by tutors
The consequence was the turnaround of the pass rate in physical chemistry and a significant increase in the number of students who passed BSc III and registered for the BSc Honours programme
particularly with respect to providing early intervention for identified learning and course challenges
It resulted in an improvement in the student throughput and an increase in the number of highly motivated and high self-concept BSc III graduates continuing to BSc Honours programme and later to MSc and PhD studies
The high retention rate and success rate of PhD training in UWC Chemistry Department is traceable to the creation of smart learning accessibility paradigms
Professor Pilar Goya Laza continues to be an inspiration in her work for EuChemS and promotion of chemistry worldwide
Medicinal chemist Pilar Goya Laza has published over 150 articles and books in the general area of pain relief
Her particular research interest concerns cannabinoids
It is as a towering figure on the International stage that she is being nominated

Laza Rakotondravohitra will pursue his Ph.D
as part of the MINERvA experiment at Fermilab
Laza Rakotondravohitra has already been a part of a couple of firsts in particle physics
He attended the first African School of Physics
He is also setting the bar high as the first international student from Madagascar to conduct research at Fermilab
Rakotondravohitra (pictured below) will study under the supervision of Fermilab scientist Jorge Morfin as he works toward his doctorate in physics
which he will earn from Madagascar’s primary public university
Rakotondravohitra arrived at Fermilab this August
Two years ago, Rakotondravohitra was one of 59 students who attended the first African School of Physics
an intense three-week program where leading international scientists discussed cutting-edge theoretical and experimental physics with students well-versed in theoretical physics
but most of whom were from African countries that lack the facilities to teach experimental particle physics first-hand
By the end of the program, professors ranked Rakotondravohitra as one of their top students, and with encouragement from Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim and Fermilab scientist Christine Darve, the head school organizer, Rakotondravohitra applied for and was eventually awarded a Fermilab International Fellowship to study at Fermilab and earn a degree as an experimental physicist
The next step was finding him a supervisor
Enter Jorge Morfin, co-spokesperson of the MINERvA collaboration at the time
He had recruited five Latin American universities to the collaboration so their students could learn experimental techniques and earn their degrees on the experiment
And when Morfin looked to expand his established program to include students from other countries
“Various professors of universities in Africa were contacted
and they agreed that Laza was a great person to initiate the expansion,” Morfin said
Rakotondravohitra is working closely with Morfin and Debbie Harris on MINERvA and is familiarizing himself with the mechanics of experimental particle physics—knowledge he will bring with him when he returns to his home country
“In Madagascar we don’t have experimental physics
so I’m going to try to use my future knowledge to help my country and students interested in experimental physics,” he said
Rakotondravohitra thanks his academic supervisor in Madagascar
professor Randriamanantany Zely Arivelo at University of Antananarivo
professor Stephan Narison a scientist at CNRS in Montpellier
the first African School of Physics team and the MINERvA team
He is also thankful for the support of his family
His wife will be joining him in Batavia this December
so I will do as best as I can,” Rakotondravohitra said

Having trained around 5,000 elite-level soccer players in the last 15 years – several hundred of whom have gone on to college scholarships and pro careers
including Scarborough’s Jonathon de Guzman – Patrick (Laza) Lowe is passionate about unearthing soccer talent and growing the game in Toronto
The former Jamaican national team member who emigrated to Toronto’s Regent Park community in 1975 isn’t going to rest on the coaching achievements of his past
has seen some of the talent that goes unidentified in some of Toronto’s most disadvantaged areas
and he wants to provide more exposure and opportunity to those athletes
the Ontario Soccer Association coach of the year recipient in 2001 was once one of them
myself know how talented some kids are in some of these areas
Cabbagetown contained some of the best untapped talent in the province
At that time he was competing with Cabbagetown and Toronto Jets soccer clubs
Eventually he went on to play pro locally in the National Soccer League and Canadian Professional Soccer League before moving on to a coaching career
which houses Lowe’s newly installed Sanjaxx Soccer School development academy
are teaming up to encourage youth soccer clubs in Toronto to participate in an equipment drive on Sunday
It will go to kids ages eight to 18 participating in free grassroots camps delivered this summer by Sanjaxx Soccer School
according to the drive’s co-organizer Andrea Dawber
Soccer talent will be identified during these camp sessions and will be subsequently offered the opportunity to train with Lowe’s academy at St
Organizing equipment drives and providing free training for the betterment of the game and its players isn’t something new to Lowe
though this will be the first equipment drive for Sanjaxx
“I just sent 300 soccer balls and other soccer equipment back to the Clarendon soccer club for kids in Jamaica
To afford some of these programs the academy is seeking donations to its Sanjaxx Scholarship Fund for Players of Merit
is $30,000 “to provide six youth from priority neighbourhoods with full year scholarships at Sanjaxx.”
To donate to the scholarship fund send cheques with the name and address of the contributor
Lowe has high hopes for the scholarship and development initiatives
“I’m hoping that it gets more kids from priority neighbourhoods off the streets and playing the game
I’m trying to take the guns and drugs out of their hands and I’m trying to give them a ball.”

A new drive system for flapping wing autonomous robots has been developed by a University of Bristol team
using a new method of electromechanical zipping that does away with the need for conventional motors and gears
This new advance, published today in the journal Science Robotics
Taking inspiration from bees and other flying insects, researchers from Bristol’s Faculty of Engineering, led by Professor of Robotics Jonathan Rossiter
called the Liquid-amplified Zipping Actuator (LAZA)
the team show how a pair of LAZA-powered flapping wings can provide more power compared with insect muscle of the same weight
The team expect the LAZA to be adopted as a fundamental building block for a range of autonomous insect-like flying robots
