All the food and dessert is made in house, so there’s really no wrong choices. Turkish Lazuri Cafe’s signature baked kunefe—a dessert with gooey cheese sandwiched between homemade sweet crispy pastry dough, baked and drizzled with simple syrup— tantalizes all the textures.

Kazandibi a burnt milk pudding is another delicacy we recommend for dessert
Imagine a sunny corner cafe with tiny outdoor tables
where there are always people milling about and chatting
A place that is open until 3 in the morning six days a week
the menu is full of items you won't find anywhere else
and the bakery cases are full of colorful treats
Is the smell of falafel drifting from a Mediterranean cafe
and this trip is courtesy of Turkish Lazuri Café
whose menu is a true culinary passport to Turkey
The menu showcases Lazuri's dedication to using only the freshest ingredients
that deciding what to order was not easy (if you are vegan
Some items were incorrectly flagged as vegan)
we ordered two Turkish teas ($1.95 - the first cup is free)
Portions here are commensurate with the prices; this was enough food for two lunches for each of us
This is the part of the review where we usually describe the ambience that we took in while we waited
aromatic steam rising from the traditional tulip-shaped tea mugs and curling prettily in the wash of sunlight
Turkish tea is brewed over heat for an extended period of time
and as a result is generally rich in tannins
Many drinkers offset the astringency by adding sugar
Since we were served a lighter concentration
and its warmth was extremely welcome after coming in from the cold
We ordered the orange flavored Turkish soda
which ended up being pretty much a standard orange soda
though at least one of us thought it tasted more truly orange‑y than some
which might be due to it containing a small amount of actual orange juice
The Lazuri veggie bowl arrived within minutes of the tea
we were enveloped in the tantalizing aroma of fresh herbs and spices
a symphony of flavors we were only too happy to experience
and the falafel was crispy on the outside and still tender within
accentuating the flavors of each ingredient instead of masking them
The veggie casserole and shepherd salad were vibrant with that freshness
making us sip our tea and then drawing us back in for more
The baba ghanoush could not have been a more perfect balance of eggplant and sesame
you can have different flavors and textures in every bite you take
The roasted vegetables on top were well seasoned
with just enough cheese sprinkled over to add richness and saltiness
It had us saying all kinds of things as we tried to put our enjoyment into words
Consider; "pizza could never" and "this is food that makes you reconsider whether or not you've ever had it before."
Lazuri is located in the heart of Allston Village
surrounded by restaurants where you can get types of food that you cannot get anywhere else
It is so nice to see Lazuri carrying on with that tradition
From the mouth-watering freshness of our meal
to the quiet music that plays over the speakers
our visit to Turkish Lazuri Café truly left us feeling transported

We didn’t have a full meal - just had coffee and shared a dessert - but we were both impressed by the comfortable seating
interesting ambiance and the sincere hospitality

Justice for Lazuri: Killer sentenced for murdering Covington mother in 2017by WKRC
(WKRC) - The man convicted of fatally shooting a woman and wounding her father in their car was sentenced Friday to 70 years in prison
Investigators believed Jermaine Beamon killed Lazuri Collins because of a dispute he had with her boyfriend
Despite a number of people in the area at the time of the shooting, Kenton Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders said no one admitted to witnessing it.
They always suspected Beamon because of that dispute but without a witness placing him at the scene, they couldn't prosecute.
That changed, when a man who detectives knew was there at the time of the shooting got arrested and cooperated with police. That man identified Beamon as the shooter.
Another person, a federal inmate, testified Beamon admitted to him to being the shooter and asked him for money while he hid from police
Sanders expressed his frustration that it took so long for an arrest and conviction in the case involving the mother of three.
Collins, 24, got her GED and was going to Gateway to try to provide for her family.
"Justice for Lazuri would have come a lot sooner if we'd had more cooperation from the start," said Sanders in a news release. "The Covington Police stood up for Lazuri when others wouldn't and it's their dedication that put her killer in prison!"

there was a kingdom stretching from the west of what is today Georgia all the way to Russia's Sochi and Turkey's Rize
a subdivision of the central administrative structure ruled by the Sultan
In 1982, all minority languages were forbidden from being taught at Turkish schools. In 2009, UNESCO reported that Lazuri was among Turkey's 15 languages in danger of becoming extinct
In 2010, Anita McNaught visited Rize's villages and noted that Lazuri was mostly spoken by the elderly and was rarely used in its written form
Also in 2010, Laz scholar İsmail Bucaklişi, who had co-authored the first-ever Lazuli dictionary, told Al Jazeera that the decline of the Laz language was tied to how people see the language itself
“Turkish is perceived as a language of modernity and commercial success,” he said
Indeed, UNESCO points out that the lack of intergenerational language transmission and community members’ own attitudes towards their language are key factors contributing to language extinction
The lack of documentation or use in the media
as well as unsupportive governmental attitudes
But Lazuri has experienced a slow revival from 1999 when Turkey began talks to accede to the European Union, a process that requires implementing protections for ethnic minorities
As a result, a series of reforms have since been passed, including in education. In 2002, the Law on Teaching and Education of Foreign Languages was amended to enable “learning of different languages and dialects traditionally used by Turkish citizens in their daily lives.”
there has been a range of local initiatives and passionate individuals who have strived to preserve the Laz culture and language
Despite a court decision that later ruled in favor of the magazine, internal disagreements prevented the publication to continue, according to the Wikipedia entry about Ogni
In 2000, some of the former editorial team of Ogni launched the magazine Mjora (“Sun”), but that was also short-lived
became the author of the first-ever novel published in Lazuri
which means “fire,” follows the life of a 7-year-old boy after he loses his parents in a car crash
Murğulişi is a native of Rize and began writing in Lazuri during his university years
In an interview with Sabah newspaper in 2011
he argued Lazuri was “also a literary language
with its unique vocabulary and grammar.”
A more recent initiative was the creation, in 2013, of the Laz Insitute in İstanbul, with 37 founders and many supporters and volunteers. In the institute's inauguration ceremony, co-founder Prof. Mehmet Bekaroğlu explained what they had in store:
We will collect all cultural activities under one umbrella
We will work on the Lazuri language and will be preparing school books
We are planning to contact universities to educate Laz teachers
we would like to organize a Lazuri Congress
we are planning to contact Ankara for a Lazuri TV station
In 2014, the Institute cooperated with the Ministry of Education to create a suitable syllabus for teaching Lazuri in secondary schools in addition to textbooks for middle school students. Turkey introduced minority languages as an elective subject in public schools in 2012
The first schools to teach Lazuri were in Vitze (Fındıklı), a district in Rize, and Arkabi (Artvin), on the coast of the Black Sea. These two public school courses started with 65 students at the start, reaching 214 in total over time
In 2018, the institute also created a Lazuri teaching program
Students all over Turkey can request Lazuri classes at their school
there are still very few Lazuri teachers available
and many schools discourage students from pursuing studies in this language
An academic article published in 2018 said:
When students choose an elective course in Laz
the administration in many schools tries to persuade them to change their minds by claiming that the school cannot find a teacher or that an insufficient number of students will enroll the course
As one Non-Governmental Organization working on the subject of the Laz language has noted
“local education authorities advise students and their families not to choose the Living Languages and Dialects elective language courses.”
In 2020, Laz Institute launched the EU-funded project Network of Laz and Circassian Civil Societies. The project's coordinator Eylem Bostanci told Global Voices in an interview that the institute “will be producing practical
and learning materials enriched by graphics and music so that children and the young people can learn their mother language.”
One of the most famous musicians in Turkey and a supporter of the preservation of Lazuri was singer Kazım Koyuncu
His rock band Zuğaşi Berepe sang lyrics in Lazuri
he continued to sing in both Turkish and Lazuri
The beauty of the Laz language can be heard in his song “Didou Nena” about a lover who left

It's no secret that it's been a difficult year for business
his ability to refocus and bank on the silver lining of every dark cloud has kept his company afloat
a garment factory at 147 Eastern Main Road
and unemployment," Roach told Business Day during a recent interview
But I can't let that affect what I'm doing in my business.”
Automated embroidery machines allow Lazuri Apparel to customise brands and logos for customers
he had no experience in garment manufacturing and he had never sat behind a sewing machine
He did have a background in management and experience in his family’s business which was enough to help him build the business from the ground up
into what is now one of the top garment factories in the country
Roach began as a management trainee and worked his way up to CEO at Langston Roach Industries
one of the Caribbean's leading consumer goods manufacturers and distributor of household
He earned degrees in economics and management at the University of the West Indies in Barbados and a master’s in business administration as well as a postgraduate diploma in corporate and commercial law
He then worked at Ansa McAl as managing director of Ansa Coatings Ltd for about four years before leaving to establish Lazuri in 2017
Roach got an opportunity to buy part of the licence for the Van Heusen brand in the Caribbean
The licence was up for sale by Mico Garment Factory Ltd in Barbados
He'd already had Van Heusen retail stores at Price Plaza
Lazuri imported garments and resold them in TT and throughout the Caribbean
realised the potential in garment manufacturing
“We decided to enter the garment manufacturing business because we wanted to expand the business and we also wanted to manufacture some of the items locally because
Upon doing research we realise many garments we important
we could have manufactured a number of them locally.”
This encouraged him to introduce a corporate wear
Lazuri's export business had been thriving until the covid19 pandemic was declared and TT had its first confirmed case
“It (the pandemic) really affected our export market because we sell to major department stores and major retail chains as far as Jamaica to Suriname and once those businesses are adversely affected it also negatively affects our business as well
“We ended up with a lot of stock on hand and we literally had to sell those items out at very low margins just to get the inventory out and bring the cash back in the system
some of our other family businesses did well during the covid19 and we were able to lean on them…and it allowed us to pivot the business.”
Lazuri Apparel CEO Roger Roach at the factory in Barataria where a range of corporate
including the Van Heusen fashion line is made
The negative effects of the pandemic and consequent restrictions on the global economy affected businesses the world over and Lazuri wasn’t spared
Roach said its export market almost disappeared making 2020 extremely challenging
"We are already invested in the garment factory plant
and we needed to do something with the facility without closing it
There was a growing and immediate demand for face masks
He said they have since expanded and started manufacturing branded face masks using sublimation printing for companies and in the last quarter of 2020
they introduced face masks in pouches now sold at major retail outlets stores across TT
Since then Lazuri has been able to build an inventory
look at new markets while recovering from the millions in losses suffered in 2020
and pivot the business to a position where we have an opportunity to rebuild,” Roach said
at their seamstress' stations on the factory floor
Lazuri started with 15 employees; now they have 45
Roach predicts the company will add at least 50 per cent to its production capacity within the next three to six months
He said there are plans to not only hire more people in 2021 but also create an internship programme for young fashion designers
and those interested in gaining experience in the industry
How is Lazuri growing in a deteriorating business environment
Roach remained optimistic and spotted windows of opportunity with each obstacle
Natasha Kennedy at the garment ironing station on the factory floor
This brought sustainable growth which allowed Lazuri to expand
Lazuri saw a niche in manufacturing personal protective equipment
"Early this year we decided to go into mass production
and we invested in our polo production line
We made sure we have all the correct machines and equipment to manufacture polo shirts at the highest quality
This (manufacturing) saves a lot of foreign exchange
And we would have done it and marketed it at a competitive price.”
Lazuri is also manufacturing dry-fit polos with high-visibility tape
useful for workers in the construction industry and businesses with factories using forklift machinery
According to mosterprints.com dry-fit material is a high-performance
polyester fabric that moves sweat away from the body and to the fabric surface
Roger Roach discusses design with Stacey Moses at the pattern cutting station
Roach said he expects this item to do extremely well on both the local and export markets
After the closure of his two Van Heusen outlets
Roach has since found creative ways to cushion the unforgiving blows brought on by restrictions
The Van Heusen line will be available in five JK Signature Styles stores across TT
In less than five years operating in the garment industry
Roach already feels he has what it takes to move it from being a stagnant sector to one that is viable and competitive on the international market
“The garment industry has enormous potential
There are many items imported into Trinidad and Tobago
And we have been able to structure space with our long-term plan
Roger Roach shows a polo shirt made under the Lazuri brand
"We can attract the skilled labour to the point where we also have a list of persons waiting to be employed at our facility
The future is very simple for us right now
the biggest item we're going to be manufacturing is polo shirts
The next item we are going into would be male/ female cotton polos
and these items are going to be mass-produced for the local unexposed market
Face masks are among the new range of PPEs made by Lazuri Apparel
“And then the next step for us will be shirts
So we're going into big categories mass production
huge facility and we expect that within a couple of years we will have to move out of this facility
interested in going into the garment manufacturing industry to make “Start small
think big and then quickly scale up” their mantra for guaranteed success
A Butler County inmate was indicted on Friday in connection to the 2017 shooting death of Lazuri Collins
according to a release from the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Office
said Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders
"We've been telling folks for a long time that we wouldn't stop until we get justice for Lazuri," Sanders said
"This is a big step in the right direction
Police responded to the area of 13th and Wheeler streets in the Eastside community on Saturday
Lazuri Collins was found in the driver's seat of a Toyota Camry and her father

Police said numerous witnesses spoke of a hooded gunman they saw flee the area on foot
a grand jury indicted Beamon on murder and first-degree assault
He is currently being held in Butler County Jail on unrelated charges
A warrant was issued for Beamon upon the indictment and he will be extradited back to Kentucky once his Ohio sentence is completed in early December
Sanders said the arrest took more than two years due to the lack of cooperative witnesses
"I grew up in this city and it pains me when a woman gets gunned down in cold blood before dozens of witnesses on a crowded street corner
But the Covington Police stood up for Lazuri when others wouldn't
so hopefully we'll get more cooperation in the future!"
He commended Chief Rob Nader and the Covington Police Crime Bureau for their commitment to the case and all the hours spent on the investigation
which carries a possible punishment of 20-50 years or life in prison
carries a possible punishment of 10-20 years in prison if convicted
Tell police anonymously who the cowards are!"
The handwritten plea is on a green poster underneath a tangle of heart-shaped balloons at the bottom of a telephone pole. It's a memorial for Lazuri Collins
shot to death a few feet away on Saturday.
two people have died in two separate shootings within sight of the pole at 13th and Wheeler streets in Covington's Eastside neighborhood
Residents and police pleaded on Wednesday for the public's help to find the killers
Lazuri Collins died from her injuries while her father was treated and released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Police were called to the same block Tuesday evening at 7:36 p.m
was still being treated as of Wednesday morning at the UC hospital.
Police and city officials held a news conference Wednesday asking for witnesses to step forward
They don't know whether the shootings are related nor do they know the motives.
But there are witnesses who saw both incidents
This small group of people have yet to identify the shooters
"I don't know if the right people are stepping forward," Sanders said
"We've got a lot of well-intentioned neighbors that are stepping forward and helping police
if we had someone that would go on the record and ID the shooters
fear has spread through Covington's Eastside neighborhood

His weary eyes gazed beneath a University of Kentucky ballcap
"Twenty-five years old and he's gone," Lewis said.
Lewis and other residents of the Eastside said a bunch of young people hang out in front of a convenience store at the corner of Wheeler and 13th streets.
were unrelated to each other and shouldn't reflect on the community as a whole.
"You got some of these younger cats that want to take things in their own hand."
The shootings have left Covington City Commissioner Michelle Williams shocked
"Everybody is trying to figure out what's going on," she said
High crime plagued the neighborhood in the late 1990s
An increased police presence and making 13th Street one way reduced traffic and crime
Police will increase patrols at 13th and Wheeler in the wake of the two shootings
"Please understand that the police cannot just stop a group of individuals for hanging out on a street corner," Carter said
"We really need the members of the community to call us and let us know when something doesn't seem right."
Authorities encouraged anyone with information to call the Kenton County Emergency Communications Center at 859-356-3191 or Covington Police at 859-292-2234
