A jury has found a 73-year-old Illinois landlord guilty in a hate crime attack that left a Palestinian American boy dead and injured his mother
Joseph Czuba, 73, was charged in the fatal stabbing of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of his mother, Hanan Shaheen on Oct. 14, 2023 in Plainfield, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) from Chicago. Authorities alleged the family was targeted because of their Islamic faith and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas that erupted on Oct
Jurors deliberated less than 90 minutes before returning with the verdict
“I don’t know if I should be pleased or upset
if I should be crying or laughing,” Wadee's father
but I’m the father of the child and I’ve lost the child
And I feel like this decision came to a little too late.”
the national civil rights attorney representing Shaheen
released a statement calling the verdict a “measure of justice.”
“Wadee was an innocent six-year-old child whose life was stolen in an act of unimaginable violence fueled by hatred,” the statement added
“While we are relieved that his killer has been held accountable
we must continue to stand against the rising tide of hate that led to this senseless act
We must honor Wadee’s memory by continuing to fight against hate in all its forms and working toward a future where every child is safe
Crump asked that the media continue respecting Shaheen's privacy as she honors her son’s memory
Shaheen did not speak at a press conference following the jury decision
executive director of the civil rights group Council on American-Islamic Relations
said it was too difficult for her and added that she “only prays for peace and love.”
The trial featured detailed testimony from police officers
who described how Czuba attacked her with a knife before going after her son in a different room
Prosecutors say that the child had been stabbed 26 times
He was found naked with a knife still in his side
Graphic photos of the murder, a knife holder Czuba allegedly used that day, along with police video footage were central to the Will County prosecutors’ case
At times video screens showing explicit footage were turned away from the public viewing audience where members of Wadee’s family sat during the trial
“If it wasn’t enough that this defendant killed that little boy
he left the knife in the little boy’s body,” Michael Fitzgerald
aggravated battery and hate crime charges in an eight-count indictment
Czuba is scheduled for sentencing on May 2
according to the Will County Circuit Clerk’s office
Defense attorneys insisted pieces of evidence tying Czuba to the crimes were missing
could only describe one outburst during their 30 years of marriage and said he carried knives often because he was handy around the house
“Go beyond the emotions to carefully examine the evidence,” said Kylie Blatti
“It is easy to get lost in the horror of those images.”
One of the critical parts of the trial was Shaheen’s testimony and the 911 call she made to report the crime that happened just days after the war started
She said they had not previously had any issues in the two years they rented from the Czubas
They shared a kitchen and living room with the Czubas
Czuba told her that they had to move out because Muslims were not welcome
stabbing her and trying to break her teeth
who testified in English and Arabic though a translator
Shaheen had more than a dozen stab wounds and it took her weeks to recover. The boy was later pronounced dead
Police testified that officers found Czuba outside the house sitting on the ground with blood on his body and hands
civil lawsuits have been filed over the boy’s death
who is divorced from Shaheen and was not living with them
The case generated headlines around the world and struck deeply for the Chicago area’s large and established Palestinian community
Department of Justice also launched a federal hate crimes investigation
who are Arab or Palestinian … who are Muslim
we all saw our children die in Wadee Alfayoumi
because this could have been any one of our boys
any one of our girls,” CAIR-Chicago's Rehab said
“It just so happened that it was Wadee Alfayoumi
Every Muslim was targeted when he (Czuba) yelled
And Murders Anti-Hamas Protester"They dragged him and tortured him to death with all kinds of hard tools," his family said
a 22-year-Gazan who has been involved in anti-Hamas protests
and murdered by terrorists before being returned to his family home
Graphic images of al-Rabei’s mutilated body went viral on social media showing the extent of the torture by Hamas’s al-Qassam brigades terrorists
Odai’s family was seen in a video accusing a “sinful
rogue group affiliated with the Qassem Brigades” of the act
adding that “they dragged him and tortured him to death with all kinds of hard tools.”
The family added that the “unjust criminals” should face an “iron fist.”
“We call on all human rights organizations and institutions to stand in support of the people of Gaza against these criminals
At his funeral procession, thousands of participants voiced their rage chanting, “In spirit and blood we’ll redeem you, Odai,” and “Out, out, out! Hamas out!” according to the Jerusalem Post
According to Palestinian activist Hamza Howidy
in Odai’s last video posted to social media
he spoke about Hamas terrorizing his family and shooting his brother
Gazans took to the streets three days last week all around the strip
in a rare display of opposition to the terrorist group
Protesters marched through Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza carrying white flags
and calling for the Israeli hostages to be released
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the rare anti-Hamas protests in the streets of Gaza over the past two days are proof that Israel’s policies are working
“In recent days, we have seen something we have never seen before — public protests against Hamas rule in Gaza,” Netanyahu said in the Knesset, Jewish News Syndicate reported
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the protesters and encouraged others to join in
calling it the “only way to stop the war.”
you should also demand the removal of Hamas from Gaza and the immediate release of all Israeli hostages,” Katz said
He added that military operations will soon spread in Gaza
which may require more evacuations from combat zones
Hamas is risking your life and will make you lose your homes and more and more land that will be added to the Israeli defense array,” Katz said
The protests marked the first time Gazans had taken to the streets to call for peace since January 2024
In recent weeks, Israel eliminated more than a dozen Hamas leaders
many of whom were key to maintaining Hamas’ control over Gaza’s population
IDF troops have begun ground activities in central and southern Gaza to create a buffer zone between the north and south of the strip
“We eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists and senior murderers,” Netanyahu said while speaking during a debate in the Knesset
which his political opposition is able to call once a month
“As long as Hamas persists in refusing to release our hostages
the pressure we apply will become stronger and stronger
This includes capturing territories and other moves I will not elaborate on here.”
Netanyahu’s comments build on Katz’s threat to annex part of the Gaza Strip if Hamas continues to refuse to release the 59 hostages held by the terror group
“I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population, and expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers,” Katz said, according to The Jerusalem Post
“The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release the hostages

Stephen Pollard
To many activists marching every weekend in London
it appears the deaths of Gazans killed by Hamas are an irrelevance
3 min readWe’ve all seen videos from last week’s demonstrations in Gaza against Hamas
Doubtless you will have had the same reaction that I had: a sense of awe at their bravery
along with fear of what might befall those who dared take on the terrorists that have held the people of Gaza in thrall since 2007
news emerged that Hamas had murdered at least six of the demonstrators
who recorded a statement on video after his funeral – bravery appears to be in the family’s DNA – members of Hamas’s Al-Qassam wing kidnapped him
tortured him for hours on end and then murdered him
His body was dumped in front of his family’s home
with the message: “This is the price for those who criticise Hamas.” In response
vowing that they will not be cowed into silence by Hamas
This weekend his brother released a video recorded by Odai just before his death in which he said he was being hunted down by Hamas
that they were trying to shoot him and that he knew he now had nowhere to hide after they had ransacked his home looking for him
(See what I mean about the family’s DNA: the brother was surely placing a target on his own back by releasing the video.)
footage has been posted on social media of a family injured in an Israeli airstrike yelling as they leave an ambulance at the entrance to a hospital that Hamas terrorists were to blame for the strike because they were hiding among them
because it is Hamas’ most successful strategy for having their fellow Palestinians killed
Gazans know they are simply fodder to Hamas
and that their status as human shields is not a tactic to prevent Israeli strikes but the means by which Hamas can ensure higher civilian casualties as Israel targets the terrorists
It's been well remarked that last week’s protests mean there have now been more pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Hamas inside Gaza than anywhere else in the world
the so-called pro-Palestinian marches have rightly been labelled hate marches
2023 in front of the Israeli embassy and the first big march a few days later – planned as the October 7 massacres were still unfolding
and the routine description of Hamas as “freedom fighters” and “resistance”
has been concern with the human rights of Palestinians in the face of Israeli military action
But the reaction to the murder of Odai Naser Saadi by Hamas from many of the most prominent supporters of the marches – indeed of the Palestinian cause more generally – should pull the rug from under the feet of anyone who might have been taken in by the marches
who has seen them as a valiant call for peace
Because there has been no reaction that I have been able to trace
The murder of a Palestinian for no reason other than his objection to being ruled by Hamas has been met with utter silence from the usual suspects of Palestinian human rights defenders
they somehow managed to keep it out of the news
The social media accounts of the likes of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign
Francesca Albanese and – of course – Gary Lineker are full of tirades against Israel over the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza
Some “pro-Palestinian” accounts have even posted statements from clan and tribal elders in Gaza against the anti-Hamas demonstrations
statements that come across as just one step removed from those of captives forced by their captors to say how well they are being treated
of the death of any of those murdered in recent days by Hamas for taking part in demonstrations against its rule and you will search in vain
it appears the deaths of Palestinians killed by Hamas are an irrelevance because they do not comply with the ideology that Israel is the evil imperialist coloniser and that those who “resist” Israel are "freedom fighters." The only dead Palestinians that matter to them are those who have been killed by Israel
To anyone who has been studying the pro-Palestinian movement this will be one of the least surprising revelations ever
Palestinians have never been anything other than a tool with which to attack Israel as part of a wider campaign
based on the vague idea promoted relentlessly across the media that the Palestinians are the victims of Israeli aggression
this obvious indifference to the murder of Palestinians by Hamas might prompt some re-thinking

2018—A 15-year-old Palestinian succumbed to his wounds Wednesday after Israeli forces shot him during a May 15 protest in the central West Bank city of Ramallah
Odai Akram Mohammad Abu Khalil died May 23 in a Nablus hospital from wounds sustained when he was shot by Israeli forces during protests commemorating the Nakba and in opposition to the U.S
according to initial reports by Defense for Children International - Palestine
“Blanket impunity given to Israeli soldiers enables the disproportionate and excessive use of force,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish
“Palestinian children will remain vulnerable to the unwarranted use of lethal force until Israeli soldiers are held accountable for their actions.”
Israeli forces shot and seriously injured Odai in the abdomen with live ammunition near a military checkpoint at the northern entrance to Ramallah on May 15
Confrontations between protesters and Israeli forces were taking place at the time of his injury
He underwent treatment at Ramallah’s Palestine Medical Complex and Al-Najah University Hospital in Nablus
He remained in critical condition for eight days and was pronounced dead on May 23
Some 27 Palestinians were injured during protests across the West Bank on May 15, according to the Ramallah Health Ministry, local news outlets reported
An Israeli military spokesperson told Ma’an News Agency that rubber-coated metal bullets and 0.22 caliber live bullets were used on demonstrators during the protests at the Ramallah-area checkpoint
which constitutes a lethal amount of force
may only be used when a direct threat to life or of serious injury exists
Four years ago to the day that Israeli forces shot Odai, Israeli forces fatally shot Nadeem Nawara
Despite video, spatial, and audio forensic analysis showing an Israeli border police officer targeting and killing Nadeem, the officer received a light sentence for "accidentally" causing the child’s death

Executive Secretary of Lands Commission
Odai Alfayoumi still looked stunned as he sat across from me
Pictures of a young boy surrounded us on the shelves
I received a call from the sheriff,” he said
‘Are you Wadee Alfayoumi’s father?’ I said yes
Alfayoumi hadn’t been talking to reporters
He’d made a few public appearances since his son was murdered
He told me he keeps thinking about that call
“You shouldn’t inform someone of such news in this way,” he said
and I couldn’t grasp what he was saying,” he said
I could go to the police station so they can explain
They gave him bits of information piece by piece
it was becoming national news out of Chicago that his son had been killed
“I cried nonstop until that evening,” Odai said
“He left this world and he took our hearts with him.”
The man owned the house where his ex-wife and son lived; he lived just outside their door
He would even sometimes greet them with the standard Arabic greeting
Now the man was alleged to have stabbed his son 26 times
Alfayoumi never intended to live in America
where he was a successful interior designer
he met a young Palestinian in a Facebook group for Arab Americans in the Chicago area
He says she encouraged him to stay in the States
“I was supposed to stay a short period and go back home
Though the divorce process took three or four years
he said they maintained a strong friendship rooted in mutual love for their son
The custody was divided in a way that left Wadee with Odai only two days out of every two weeks
“His mother usually brought him to me at 9 in the morning,” he remembered
“I would be sitting here on the chair looking outside the window to see him when he arrives.” The long periods in between visits took a toll: “Longing increases
When I drive him back to his mother on Sunday
You become like a charger; today you miss him a bit
I am totally out of charge; I must see him
Alfayoumi stayed in Chicago in part because he wanted his son to have more opportunities later in life
it wouldn’t be surprising to find that your taxi driver has earned a high academic degree
but there are few jobs and low salaries,” he said
“My life perspectives have changed drastically
His future is what made me stay in America when I came as a tourist.”
Having a son named Wadee had been Alfayoumi’s dream since he was a child
His nickname growing up was Abu Wadee (“father of Wadee”)
because he wished his name had been Wadee instead of Odai
he committed to giving that name to a son if he were to one day have one
it felt like fulfilling his lifelong dream
“It is killing me knowing that my dream has come to an end,” he said
I got the sense that Alfayoumi was still living in some kind of in-between—a dream state where he hadn’t yet processed exactly what had happened
His olive-green eyes were haloed by dark circles of exhaustion
he held back tears as he scrolled through his phone
showing me the last photos he took of his son Wadee
including one of him wearing a sparkling blue birthday hat on his 6th birthday
as he showed me one of his son kneeling on an adult-sized prayer rug that showed just how small he was
My son would have been 17 years old,” he said
It’s even more surreal that he knows the man who killed his son
When Wadee and his mother moved into the apartment where he would be killed
Odai went to inspect it and met the landlord
“He’s the one who let me in and showed me around
I didn’t like the house because it’s hard to get in the driveway
My biggest fear was she gets into an accident on her way in or out
or the boy runs out into the street,” he said
He said the landlord looked rough and disheveled
but he came to feel at ease with him: “He would collect scrap wood and create a table or chair for the boy to play with
He made a treehouse and created a swing between two trees out of strings and ropes
He put in tremendous effort into these projects and when I asked him why
“I only saw him when I came to pick up or drop off Wadee
I’d ask him if the boy was keeping him up or bothering him
Now that he knows what happened in that house
Odai can’t get one detail of that day out of his head
This is the kind of question that has no answer
How did he feel being stabbed by someone who he might have thought was playing with him?”
This is completely understandable: She too was stabbed repeatedly
and had to spend a week in the hospital due to her wounds
She couldn’t go back home after her release—the carnage remained—so she lived out of a hotel for several weeks before finding a new apartment in a nearby town
people close to the family put us in touch
“How beautiful it was to have these six years and eight days filled with prayer and kisses and warm hugs and a happy creative boy that was so smart and singing
whose friends knew his name before they learned their name
He was an angel we had for six years and eight days,” she said with a bright smile
We talked about how her son mimicked the way she prayed
mouthing syllables to copy the way she quietly recited Quran
he would bring a scarf and skirt!” she said
Her new apartment was still only sparsely furnished
with bare walls that echoed and emphasized the sound of her laughter
We both laughed as she recalled how Wadee would dress himself
‘You’re wearing your clothes on the wrong side.’ They would laugh at us at the park,” she said
Hanan served Arabic desserts on her coffee table
an assortment of bite-sized baklava and Bird’s Nest Kunafa
which I had picked up from a Palestinian dessert shop
I asked her why she said yes to my interview request when she had turned down many others
pointing to the several small bandages on her lip and chin
“I was hesitant to do that first press conference
waiting for me to report that I’m still good
I wondered if this was how Hanan’s grief had manifested: the beaming conversation
the obvious joy in her memories of her child
her focus on the present and refusal to dwell on what happened
When I gently asked what she remembered from that day
but a representative for her provided a written timeline
That statement says Wadee and Hanan lived in Czuba’s house for two years
which they needed to pass through to access their “private space,” including two small bedrooms
Wadee would refer to Czuba and his wife as Grandpa and Grandma
Everything changed after the start of the war in Gaza in October
it started Saturday morning with Wadee undressed and about to take a shower
and Czuba knocking on the door in his living room leading to his tenants’ space
and was surprised to find Czuba yelling at her
demanding to know why she wasn’t doing anything to “stop the war” in Gaza
She was stabbed 12 times with a 12-inch knife with a 7-inch serrated blade
and quietly called 911 from her bathroom so as not to alert Czuba
he had already broken back into the space she was renting and stabbed her son 26 times
the police said she found her son on the ground with the knife still lodged in his abdomen
Police arrived at the scene quickly and found Czuba sitting on the ground outside the house.Paramedics transported everyone to the hospital
Wadee was still alive but in critical condition
she gave the nurse Czuba’s wife’s phone number
and asked her to call her to explain what happened so that she wouldn’t come home to the bloody scene and be surprised
She explained to the nurse how to take care of her son in case she didn’t survive
the sheriff’s office released a statement that announced Czuba was charged with first-degree murder
She said she was born and raised in Beitunia
to a huge family with nine siblings on an idyllic farm
Neighbors came to the farm to buy from her family
“It was beautiful nature; we were surrounded by green.”
After finishing high school down the road from her family’s farm
“I can’t even remember the number of people who came
My mom and dad told them I was young and they didn’t want to say goodbye to me so early
a Palestinian American suitor from Chicago got her family’s blessing
She hadn’t considered coming to America before
the way we handled this marriage made it impossible to continue it,” she said
The boys went to live with their father and she sees them on the weekends
It was during this process that she met Odai on Facebook and moved quickly into that marriage
where she would have Wadee and then get divorced again
We couldn’t continue at all in this marriage
I felt it wasn’t written for us to continue as wife and husband
So I filed for divorce just three months after delivering Wadee
that she could finally focus on living her own life
She found work as a caregiver for senior citizens
always looking for more affordable living situations
It was a real estate agent she was speaking to who suggested the rooms for rent at his brother Joseph Czuba’s home
but was much more attracted to the price tag: $300 a month
She had mixed feelings about her new landlord/housemate
But I didn’t expect he would judge me for these things happening overseas,” she said
“He was listening to the news and judging me for what he was hearing
‘I told you about the war between your people
and you’re not doing anything about it.’ He wanted me to do something about it?” she asked
a moderately sized village 45 minutes outside of Chicago that’s known locally as Little Palestine
It’s immediately noticeable on the main strip
with its various Arabic-language storefronts
some of which make direct reference to Palestine
plazas here were like 50 percent occupancy
Khattab recently celebrated 30 years of living in the area
He had hoped to one day go back to raise his family in Damascus
but made his roots in Bridgeview permanent after the Syrian civil war made it impossible to go back home
He said the Arab diaspora is attracted by the Islamic schools and established mosques in the area
He watched the community develop from a small
almost entirely white town into what it is today
when the Mosque Foundation was just one small room
and the dawn prayer would have between five and 10 people
the mosque is full nine rows deep for prayer
The community is populated around the mosque
but they don’t know what’s going on beyond it sometimes,” he said
He remembers hearing from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison
Ellison told him that a white supremacist terrorist organization that attacked a mosque in Minnesota with explosives was based in southern Illinois
we usually have three of four entrances open for the prayers,” he said
“I know five or six people carry when they go to the morning prayer,” he said
“I had a discussion with the chief of police of the village
‘Be careful when your guys go to the mosque
you’re more likely to get shot by friendly fire than the bad guys.’ ”
the executive director of the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
said there’s no denying the link between the violence and how Americans perceive the war in Gaza in an atmosphere that he said often ignores the suffering of Palestinians
“People will take matters in their own hands
And you see what happened to Wadee and his mother
It was a man who was radicalized by the mainstream media.” Rehab shared with me a handwritten death threat he received at his office a few days ago
called him “a dead man,” and threatened violence
Us crusaders will behead you Muslim rats,” the letter read
It added: “The lousy Muslim hyena boy was only the beginning.”
Rehab has been meeting with political figures behind the scenes and urging them to take this threat more seriously
the longtime senator from Illinois—“he wasn’t radicalized by some right-wing blog
He wasn’t a member of some underground white supremacist group
He wasn’t a member of some illegal militia
who the kid liked and called him grandfather
we got ahead of it early with a big press conference with national and global news
The president responded and the governor came to the funeral
The president called the family and sent a letter
We helped the whole world move in the right direction about it
I stopped by to look at the house where Wadee had lived
with a small memorial on the street with sports balls and teddy bears laid out and a small Palestinian scarf wrapped around a flagpole flying an American flag
Czuba’s truck is still parked next to the house
The back of it is covered in Christian bumper stickers with calls to support children
One is a quote from Pope John Paul II: “A nation that hurts its own children is a nation without hope.” Another sticker says “Children
She threw her hands up in the air and shouted
“Can I help you?” I asked if I could talk to her
she told me that news trucks have been parked outside of her home nonstop
“The whole country needs to calm down,” she said
Odai arrived early the morning of his son’s funeral to conduct the ritual washing of the body himself
“I was the one who washed him when he was born
and I was the one who washed him when he died,” he said
For many people who attended the funeral in Little Palestine—“it was the largest the town had ever seen,” Khattab said—Odai noticed that it seemed to bring closure
The support he’s had so far has both heartened and frustrated him—the latter happening more when it comes from people outside of his community: “Big names reached out
He said he sympathized with me and felt for me.” But he didn’t see the losses as the same
and said he can “smell hypocrisy” when it came to American policies in Gaza and elsewhere
but he plans to be there in court as Czuba’s trial unfolds
smiled as she talked about all of the support and love she received after what happened
“I think this hate happened to show me after it the whole love from everyone
And I will continue to wish for all of us to have peace and happy days
Alhamdulilah.” When I went to take her photograph for this article
she carefully turned her head to avoid showing most of her wounds
she told me that she wanted people to see she is OK
The Nii Odai Ntow Family in Accra has warned people and other families about the lands that belong to them
which was addressed by the Finance Head of Customary Lands
the family reminded the people and families of the legal tussle they have gone through to get their lands
Nii Ayidzaku narrated in detail the rulings from the legal battles
some of which travel through almost all levels of the legal system in Ghana
some of these families have flouted the judgement of the courts and gone to develop the land even when the courts barred them from doing so
He reminded the public that documents available to them prove that the Nii Odai Ntow family are legitimate owners of such lands in Kwabenya
Again, Nii Ayidzaku called on law enforcement agencies, especially the police, Land Commission
to ensure that the other families comply with the judgement of the courts
he called on the land minister to look into the activities of the land commission
which he claims some people have turned into gold mines
He also asked the developers on their lands to come and acquire tenancy from them

The Nii Odai Ntow Family of Ashongman in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region has appealed to the Lands Commission to revisit the 1904 judgement of the Supreme Court on the Nii Odai Ntow Family Lands to ascertain the exact boundaries before proceeding with its intended demarcation exercise
there was no dispute about the true ownership of their land
the boundaries which had become an issue of dispute could be resolved effectively if the Commission referred to the Supreme Court Judgement on the case titled Bosumpim and Ors Vs
Addressing a news conference at the Nii Odai Ntow Family House at Ashongman on Saturday
Hislord Tettey Anang said the 1904 Supreme Court judgment titled Bosumpim and Ors vs
SCT.2/4/32 affirmed that their family was the rightful and legitimate owners of the 12,690 acres of land in the Ashongman Kwabenya enclave
the Supreme Court affirmed that the 12,690 acres of land belonging to their family shared boundaries with Akwapem to the north
Awura Dede and Abloradjei to the north-east through to Onyina Tia located at the present day Legon Botanical Gardens
the 12,690 acres shared boundaries with the La Stool Lands through Dome and parts of the St Johns Grammar School along the Pokuase road to Nsawam Prisons through to Brekusu and the Adjongote Hills
the then family head of the Nii Odai Ntow Family and the Chief of Ashongman
relying on the 1904 judgment made the necessary declaration and same was plotted by the Lands Commission
These records he noted still remained with the Commission and was surprised that same commission would purport a redemarcation exercise on their land
He said the Nii Odai Ntow Family had not extended the boundaries of their land beyond the established 12,690 acres and would plead with the Lands Commission to assess their own records before seeking to alter the existing demarcation
Mr Anang said there was enough evidence to show that the family was the one that released portions of their land to Ghana’s first President
for the purposes of the establishment of the Atomic Energy Commission project
He said any attempt by the Lands Commission to delete either a part or all of their land entries would be unlawful and baseless
Mr Anang therefore asked the general public to disregard the news circulating that a high court has instructed the Lands Commission to delete Nii Odai Ntow family lands in their records as false
“We are ready to legally deal with the Secretary of the Lands Commission if he goes ahead and fraudulently adhered to the report,” Mr Anang emphasised
says he is poised to win the Krowor seat in the upcoming December 7 general elections
He is optimistic to beat the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP)
Agnes Naa Momo Lartey with an overwhelming vote margin to secure the seat for NPP
The Krowor constituency remains a notable political battleground in the country’s electoral history as both New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress compete fearlessly to win the people’s mandate
The NDC has won four out of seven elections since Ghana returned to constitutional rule in 1992
Madam Agnes Naa Momo Lartey of the NDC garnered 41
850 votes representing 55.80 percent to defeat Mrs
Elizabeth Afoley Quaye of the NPP with 32,604 representing 43.47%
The upcoming December 7 polls promises to be a fascinating showdown in Krowor as the two main political parties have adopted diverse tactics to win the seat
is poised to win the seat for the NPP and has adopted a door-to-door campaign to engage the constituents
Odai Laryea touted the role he has played to see to it that the road network in Nungua receives facelift
stressing he is in to develop Krowor and make Nungua hospitable
“We civil engineers make the world hospitable
and I have started and the road development alone in the area tells you a lot
I think nobody will come and even challenge me because I have done massive work for Nungua,” he claimed
He similarly highlighted other programmes he has rolled out to touch many lives including skills training
giving out start up tools to artisans as well as giving job opportunities for hundreds of the youth
He is optimistic yet prayed the people will reflect on his benevolence and give him the mandate to serve

Odai Salah befriended Rosemary Windle and Maurece Smith
by claiming he could put them in touch with business contacts in the Middle East
But in January he armed himself with a knife and went to their flat in Torquay
where he strangled Windle and stabbed and suffocated Smith
returned at least twice to the murder scene to create the impression the couple were alive
giving himself more time to use the cheques and credit cards he stole
Mr Justice Jack said: "I am satisfied the reason for your killing Maurece Smith and Rosemary Windle was to get at their money." The judge told Salah: "Lying is in your blood." He described him as cool and calculated and devoid of any moral sense; he was a clever man but with a "warped intelligence"
had told the jury: "This was a cold-blooded execution by the defendant of an elderly couple in order to get money from them
He saw Rosemary Windle and Maurece Smith as an opportunity to get money
He murdered them and then stole from them.He took their cheque books and credit cards and used them."
He studied at the school of law and social sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University
He set up a business distributing Lebanese food and wine but it failed in 2009
Dunkels said: "The defendant had been in financial difficulties for some time
He had resorted to various deceptions to get money or credit
banks and other organisations that had lent money to him were pressing him for repayment or for arrears of monies due to be paid
Dunkels said Salah met the couple late in 2009
with Windle running a successful business selling linen and other goods to wealthy clients in the Middle East
Smith suffered problems with his hips and knees and walked with crutches
Dunkels said: "[Salah] was falsely representing himself to the victims as someone who could put valuable business their way
His purpose must have been to convince them that he had financial standing so as to win their confidence and to then somehow persuade them to advance money to him."
It was not clear what triggered the attack
"Perhaps he realised that he could not sustain the story of taking them all to Lebanon for big business any longer and that they could not be persuaded to hand over money to him willingly."
he went to a bank and tried to pay a forged cheque for £27,000 into his own account
Nine minutes later he went into another bank and tried to pay in another forged cheque
Next day he posed over the phone as Smith to try to pay off a £4,658 debt
When police went to the flat they found Smith's body in an armchair covered with blankets and pillows and a cushion over his face
A broken knife blade was found under his body
Windle's body was found in the garage lying on the floor covered by a blanket
Salah had told the jury that he did not kill the couple
He admitted his finances at the time were "horrible" but said his future finances were looking excellent
Detective Superintendent Steve Carey said: "Salah is an arrogant and practised liar
He was a desperate man who had run out of money and who was looking for any way to fund his lifestyle."

How can the collective exist in a country torn apart by civil war
In Jamhara/Assemblage Syrian artist Mohamad Omran and writer Odai al-Zoubi use ink drawings and words to envision unity in the midst of fragmentation
Jamhara moves from a bus stop outside Hama to a poet of the Chinese Communist Revolution
This ease with the worldly is reflected in the text’s bilingual publication
fluidly readable in two directions: one for English
Jamhara thus seems to resolve what Syrian novelist Rosa Yassin Hassan dubs the “tightrope” walked by Syrian writers today
between “particularity and worldliness (al-khususiyya wa al-‘alamiyya)”
Many of Syria’s cultural producers (including Omran and al-Zoubi) live abroad
and what Hassan calls a worldly movement of “creativity”
Thanks to spikes of academic and popular interest in the 2011 uprising and the war that followed
more Syrian literature dealing with revolution and violence is being translated into European languages
Hassan’s pull of the worldly tugs on writers and works alike
using literal and cultural-political translations to make Syrian’s recent past and contemporary struggles globally intelligible
anglophone readers might parse Hassan’s claim on the particularities of Syrian literature (and art) through identity
I read instead across the spaces Jamhara opens between text and image to address a different kind of particularity: a restraint that marks a certain privacy
a refusal to put the particular (al-khass) into figurative circulation
and trauma that Jamhara identifies in nine paradigmatic scenes
I use it to underscore a theme that has animated Omran’s work for years and that preoccupies many Syrian activists and thinkers today: the troubled relation between individuals and political collectives
Jamhara breaks contemporary lexical conventions for thinking politics
jamhara titled works that assembled not events
The Gathering (Jamharat) of the Arabs’ Verse by Abu Zayd al-Qarashi) and dictionaries (e.g.
The Comprehensive Lexicon (al-Jamhara fi al-Lugha) by Abbasid grammarian Ibn Durayd)
Jamhara is the gerund of a verb derived from jumhur
More orderly than the mob (it yielded the Arabic for “republic”)
jumhur’s political immanence pales next to al-sha’b—the people—the noun politicians use to interpellate the nation and in whose name the 2011 uprisings spoke their most famous slogan
jamhara names assembly and its formation: becoming-assembly
pre-print translation for Omran and al-Zoubi’s project suggests this dual process
as well as the semantic novelty their approach invites: “the huddle”
Jamhara loosens the representational grip of dictatorship
and ISIS on the Syrian society terrorized by them
Omran and al-Zoubi use jamhara to re-frame stock memories of the Assad regime and the post-2011 decade
These include being forced to march as adoring crowds; the spectacle of ISIS; imprisonment; demonstrations; forced displacement
These experiences are categorized anew as instances of Syrians (and Syrian-Palestinians) becoming assemblies
this inventory levels the ground between assemblies formed voluntarily—paradigmatically 2011—and those born passively
Its gathering is thus an anthologizing gesture
an introduction to taking stock of Syrian collectivities past and present
yet the vitality of the non-human is out of frame
in a work relentlessly focused on the human
including men who stand apart to record two contrasting funerals: one for Hafez al-Assad (president 1970-2000)
Before them lie metonyms of Hafez’s reign: Hama
Omran’s drawings of security officials and motorcades here tend to the ironic
but the state apparatus is no less ominous for being ridiculous
After the uprising lies the post-2011 contemporary: overcrowded prison cells
Omran’s faces and bodies are wracked with new torments
stripped nearly naked in the prison scene; eyes closed or absent in exodus from a sagging urban warscape
as though the artist wishes to ward off horrors sensed ahead
the risk of death is constitutive of 2011’s becoming-assembly: not for nation (or Caliphate)
It becomes in so many decisions to face death
A worse fate is letting these others down; letting the protests die; and “then,” writes al-Zoubi
being “alone again.” One wonders what language beyond the religious might have let protestors articulate such becoming-assembly; recalling Hassan’s particularities
what theory of uprising could embrace the frictions in translating Jamhara’s unruly immanence into global terms of neoliberalism and precaritization
When its authors do draw a translational line
it is not between locals and globals or different languages
They are different sizes; an outstretched hand dwarves a man’s body
The most visually unified assembly in Jamhara is the state’s: security agents
They are marked by their robes and sunglasses
their uniformly calm faces and closed mouths
Jamhara does not give “the individual” a content
but chooses to leave representational space open—between media and in what I am describing as restraint
opting for smaller groups and visible faces over the horizon-filling expanse of revolutionary masses
mourning crowds are indistinguishable from joyous ones
Yet Omran’s closeness does not yield intimate portraits
his figures frequently lower or close their eyes
thematize surfaces and silences as constitutive of communication
he recalls: “the country was deeply divided
with no evidence or results: nothing on the surface at all”
This might be dismissed as an effect of censorship
Yet restraint characterizes ordinary relationships in Jamhara: fearing social unrest
relatives offer one another reassurance while packing to flee
imprisoned for protesting in 2012 and now living in Paris
writes “I lie to [my family] constantly,” and they to her
but communication is not hindered: “I understand very well what they are experiencing [in Syria],” and they her in Paris
Her father wrote her letters every day of her imprisonment
but she did not read them until she was on a plane to Paris
She doesn’t need to explain why she didn’t read this evidence of her father’s grief
an intimate reflection of the imprisonment she survived
Jamhara suggests a task facing Syrians who take stock of becoming-assembly since 1970: a mourning at once collective and deeply private
writer and artist abdicate their media to depict ISIS in a becoming-assembly that
conjures the absent gaze of Syrians on their violence: a mediatized assembly
This is why Omran’s drawing reproduces the iconic shot of an ISIS member about to behead a prisoner while bearded men brandish weapons and black flags in the background
ISIS is not un-representable but excessively so
al-Zoubi inserts Wat’s poem on the ceaselessness of evil
refusing to offer a Syrian voice on the spectacle in a parallel gesture to S.S.: some letters are not yet (ever?) to be opened
It would be convoluted at best to suggest that the restraint traversing Jamhara is attributable to the Assad regime’s censorship
The work is part of a new drive in Syrian cultural work to remember the past without erecting new sacred monuments: sites of mourning
but also of fetishization and exclusion that can foreclose transformation in the present
historically and critically reflective current of intellectual production that has followed the 2011 uprisings
writers and activists are acknowledging the trauma and despair accumulated over years while fiercely scrutinizing the politics of narrative and commemoration
“How,” to borrow Egyptian journalist Lina Attalah’s words
the immanence of 2011 is no lodestar for the present
Children play; adults smoke nargileh; a woman has taken off her shoes to eat a banana
Omran’s black background may even be read as a screen
evoking the relevance of digital connections for scattered communities
the image offers a narrative arc: of the fragmented present as time for mourning

Iraq — Saddam Hussein's sons Odai and Qusai died in a blaze of gunfire and rockets yesterday when U.S
military claimed their deaths will blunt Iraqi resistance to the American occupation
The six-hour raid was the most successful American operation since the war and comes as a much-needed tonic for U.S
who recently have suffered a dozen attacks a day by Saddam loyalists and other anti-American groups
News of the sons' deaths touched off celebratory gunfire in Baghdad and at least one southern city
cautioned "there will be some people who will be pretty unhappy that we killed these two guys."
Four coalition soldiers were wounded and two other Iraqis were killed in the raid
The house belonged to Nawaf al-Zaydan Muhhamad
a Saddam cousin and tribal leader in the region
"We are certain that Odai and Qusai were killed today," Lt
"The bodies were in such a condition where you could identify them."
The identifying marks included Odai's scars from a 1996 assassination attempt
The soldiers removed four bodies and did not let photographers take pictures
The other two bodies were tentatively identified as that of a bodyguard and a teenager
The teen may have been a son of Qusai and grandson of Saddam
occupation troops are thought to be the work of former military officers and Baath Party leaders loyal to Saddam and his family — especially the sons
who played primary roles in the military and feared security services
with the Florida Army National Guard in Baghdad
He clapped his hands and said: "One step closer to getting home."
Both Odai (pronounced oh-DEYE) and Qusai (pronounced koh-SEYE) ranked second only to their father in the deposed regime
The United States had offered a $25 million reward for information leading to Saddam's capture and $15 million each for his sons
these two individuals were responsible for countless atrocities committed against the Iraqi people and they can no longer cast a shadow of hate on Iraq," it said in a statement
We will pursue the other members of his murderous regime wherever they might be hiding."
Sanchez said he thought the security situation now would improve
"I believe very firmly this will have an effect
This will prove to the Iraqi people that these two members of the Iraqi regime will never come to power again," the general said
a delegate from Iraq's new Governing Council
"This will contribute significantly to reducing attacks on coalition soldiers," he said
about 1,000 people gathered outside the smoldering villa
"How can they do this?" shouted a man in the crowd
apparently more concerned with the property damage than the death of two of the cruelest men in Saddam's regime
"What are the Americans doing destroying a house like this?"
The shooting was believed to be celebratory as news spread of the sons' deaths
