If you’re thinking about making the leap from Romania to Spain
After more than two decades living in Spain – mostly in northern Burgos – Ovidiu recently moved again
“I’ve been living in Spain for 23 years,” he says
adding that “I spent the longest time in Burgos.” But a year and a half ago
he decided to relocate to be near his loved ones
“I moved here [Manilva] to be closer to family,” he explains
Now working in renovations and general home maintenance
Ovidiu says his job keeps him busy with “both interior and exterior” work
he does miss some aspects of life back home
“The working conditions and the salary” in Romania
“I like the climate and the culture,” Ovidiu shares
highlighting two things that often top the list for many expats who move to Spain
Being surrounded by family again has also made a big difference: “I like that we have family nearby and get to see each other more often.”
Ovidiu finds it manageable: “Very good,” he says simply
He has friends “from different nationalities,” and while learning Spanish came with its challenges
but working all the time with Spanish people made it much easier and quicker to learn.”
Interestingly, both Spanish and Romanian are part of a family of languages known as ‘romance languages’ – their Latin origin means they have a lot of similarities. My husband is Romanian
and he has picked up Spanish far easier than I have
unsealed toilet in our rental apartment and did a great job

Study to focus on tropical forests and carbon storage capacity
Wake Forest researcher and remote sensing expert Ovidiu Csillik will serve as a co-investigator on a new NASA-funded project to get a more accurate and detailed picture of what is happening with carbon storage over time in tropical forests
$1 million NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science (ROSES) grant will fund the study
“Aboveground Carbon Stock Changes in Dynamic Tropical Forests.” The project is led by the U.S
Forest Service and includes researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at California Institute of Technology and UCLA
With remote sensing technology called lidar
scientists can gather detailed 3D aerial and satellite data on trees and other plant material that make up the forest to estimate carbon storage capacity
“Satellite biomass monitoring will be critical in tropical forests
The researchers will develop benchmark data to quantify tropical forest aboveground biomass change and associated uncertainties with airborne lidar combined with a ground-based forest inventory of the same area at the same time.
“If we want to quantify carbon through time
this is the most accurate way to get a 3D model of the forest,” he said.
Accurately measuring carbon losses and gains over time is important for effective climate mitigation strategies
“These results will have immediate value to stakeholders to participate in carbon markets because they need both estimates of forest changes and estimates of the associated uncertainties,” Csillik said
The data and tools they develop will be made publicly available at the end of the project
Csillik is an assistant professor in remote sensing who teaches courses in the environment and sustainability studies program. He recently published a PNAS study showing that forest degradation drives carbon loss more than deforestation in the Amazon

elected officials welcomed victims of communist regimes
which turned communist and totalitarian after World War II
came to America in search of freedom and was welcomed
Those denied freedom often cherish it the most
“I grew up with that missing spirit of liberty and freedom,” said Ovidiu Colea in Congressional testimony (Senate Judiciary Committee
“I spent time together with my father night after night and year after year enjoying the only liberty
we got together in the house with the lights turned off and listened to our only hope
This was the only freedom we could afford.” (Note: I met Mr
Colea when I worked on the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee.)
he tried to leave Romania and make it to the United States
I decided to cross the border to swim over the Danube River,” said Colea
“I hid myself in the cornfields for many hours near the river
When I felt the cold metal of the guard’s gun pointing at my head
my way to freedom and liberty was closed.”
Colea was arrested and sent to a prison labor camp
long hours of labor in hot and cold weather
eating the roots of the plants and digging for growing seeds in the soil and being punished for trying to learn a foreign language
None of this changed my determination of trying to come to America.”
In an interview for a documentary on Romanian immigrants
he described the first sight he saw in America and his father’s words to him as a child
since I was a child I started to wish to go and see the Statue of Liberty,” he said
I had to wait for a further 15 years [after prison] before I could fly away
I was on a plane with New York as my destination
What most impressed me during the flight was from the plane I saw the Statue of Liberty
Shortly after arriving in the United States
including in a casting factory and driving a New York City taxicab
he entered into a partnership to start a foundry company
The company’s big break came in 1982 when it won a contract to create commemorative replicas for the Los Angeles Olympics
a more significant break came when his company received a license from the Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to create replicas of the Statue of Liberty
Colea received a patent for new techniques for acrylic sculptures
which started with five workers and grew to 30 employees
the company produced hundreds of thousands of replicas of the Statue of Liberty each year
“What does it mean to you to be an American?” Ovidiu Colea responded
“It is something which we cannot put a price on
It is something more than any other country in the world can have—freedom
and we can help somebody else.” Colea added

Ovidiu Eftimie’s career was heading in a different direction
After working at a startup and then 8 years in a French/Romanian company
he was looking to move out of out of the country to look for new opportunities
“Adobe was just beginning in Romania and I got an interview
I immediately loved the people and the entrepreneurial spirit I found here
I decided to join the team and after a couple of months
I was amazed—I had found a place where we could work on cool ideas
I delayed my decision to leave the country—and this delay is now 14 years old.”
Ovidiu is a Director of Engineering and leads the Adobe Analytics and Adobe Primetime teams in Romania
When asked what he’s most proud of after 14 years at Adobe Romania
Learn more about his incredible career and accomplishments
and how people are the key ingredients in his recipe for leading high-performing teams
When Ovidiu describes his current role as the Director of Engineering
he says it’s all about being a “rock lifter.” He adds
“I’m often faced with different types of ‘rocks’ I need to clear out of my teams’ paths
Some of these ‘rocks’ represent technology
or people challenges.” And while all this rock lifting sounds tiring
his emphasis on supporting his team is exactly what makes Adobe a great place to work for him
“That’s what’s kept me here for 14 years—the people
I have colleagues from all over the world and together we’ve built great teams
and discovered the best way to solve challenges.”
as Ovidiu’s career has taken off over the years
he mentions the variety of learning opportunities that have made his job exciting
This includes working on the latest technologies
and learning from some of the greatest minds in the world
“You have an entire spectrum of opportunities here at Adobe—it’s up to you to leverage them” he says
Although he already has countless achievements under his belt
And it’s all because of the impact he can make
“Adobe is a special place because many teams have the power to influence how an entire market segment moves
or you can work on projects that influence how millions of users are experiencing an Adobe solution.” Take the accomplishment he’s most proud of for example: The Emmy-award winning Adobe Primetime authentication project
user-friendly system for unlocking pay-TV content on any device
“I would probably mention the Adobe Primetime Authentication project as something I’m most proud of
This product helped define an entire market segment and won an Engineering Emmy Award Plaque in 2012.”
And behind the innovation is always the people
which is why hiring the best talent is always top of mind for Ovidiu’s team
When asked what his recipe is for hiring the right candidate
“Passion coupled with the right attitude towards learning
We’re always looking for great skills in a certain area
so your ability and desire to learn is much more important than excelling in a certain technical topic.”

the anxious explorations of the “different” something inside your bra
and the question mark that hovered above your head
had just been replaced with the four words
“Positive for Breast Cancer.” No question mark now
A new identity was assigned to you and the old one became slightly ephemeral
giving way to this new person who carried within her a tumor with an agenda of its own
*
may indeed be the worst of it — that period of being alone with your thoughts
as if sitting in the back seat is a stranger whose face you cannot see
You know that other women have succumbed to such an intruder
During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
the Tallahassee Democrat is sharing conversations with doctors and patients
It is our hope to bring readers new information and shed light on what services are available in Tallahassee
in this case through Tallahassee Memorial’s unique Cancer Center and from the breast cancer specialists working there
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare radiation oncologist
and the realization on the part of women and their families who are just beginning the journey with breast cancer as a new reality
He knows that the learning curve will be steep
“But the good news is that these women are not alone
Marina’s expertise is in one part of the triad of modalities that are used to treat breast cancer
and radiation are still the accepted means of treating breast cancers,” he says
the techniques have been refined and expanded.”
who was born in Romania and educated at Case Western Reserve and William Beaumont Hospital in the U.S
notes a number of these changes in method and understanding
for many years efforts were toward conserving the breast by removing the tumor and its clear edges
women have looked more favorably at having total mastectomies
Marina says that unless there is clear evidence of the BRCA 1 and 2 genes that occur in a very small percentage of the population
there is new evidence that breast conservation surgeries may lead to a slight increase in survival rates for early stage patients
Other advances which are incorporated into therapies offered at Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center
accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
“There are a number of new chemotherapeutic agents as well as adjuvant therapies,” says Marina
on an estrogen modulation regimen for five years and sometimes 10 years following initial treatment has been shown to decrease relapse or reappearance of new tumor activity.”
Marina says that while focused radiation for reducing disease recurrence remains much the same as in the past
“We are now able to better control dosages and reduce toxicity and side effects
Superficial skin burns or radiation of uninvolved organs
like the heart’s receiving unwanted radiation
are now able to be controlled with image guidance
more carefully controlled dosing and breathing techniques during treatment.”
whose own father died of lung cancer when the boy was 9 in Communist-controlled Romania
says that that event ultimately led to a career that combined both the science of radiation oncology and the ability to work with people and see them regain health
But he knows that that process can feel overwhelming
It is one reason he finds the TMH Patient Navigator program an essential part of the treatment process
“From the moment a patient enters treatment
Help is given in areas of treatment explanations
coordinating doctors’ appointments and treatment times
Even help with family matters that may be impacting their lives.” Marina says that
“Just like the other services that the Cancer Center offers that see the patient as a “whole” — animal therapy
support groups — our goal is to restore health to the entire individual and not just treat a tumor.”
Marina and the team at the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center want patients to know that the “stranger in the backseat” won’t have to be ousted alone
All 5 Releases
Ovidiu Marina joined the practice at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s Cancer Center this summer after completing his residency at William Beaumont Hospital outside of Detroit
he went to medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland
He said he chose TMH because of the other physicians and partners at the cancer center and because he liked Tallahassee and the surrounding region
Marina has a personal connection with cancer; his father died of lung cancer
He also was drawn to radiation oncology because of his technical abilities and the ability to spend time with patients
“You have a chance to really sit down with a patient and get to know them in radiation oncology and that’s what I really like about it,” he said
He explained his role as part of a breast cancer patient’s team of doctors this way:
“What I do for a patient is try to understand what their routine of care is going to be and how radiation is going to fit into that treatment.”
Different types and stages of breast cancer determine if radiation is needed
with a mastectomy where the breast is removed or a lumpectomy
followed by radiation to the entire or a part of the breast
“Radiation allows patients to have what is called ‘breast conserving therapy’ where you still keep you breast and still treat the cancer,” he said
“The improvements that have come about over the years is how we do the treatment planning so we can avoid parts of the body that don’t need radiation
and at the same time still allow coverage of the breast and lymphoid areas which are important in keeping the cancer from coming back.”
Marina’s advice to breast cancer patients is to meet and get to know all the doctors who might play a role in treatment
“It’s always best to get to know your entire treatment team so you have a good understanding of what your treatment options are,” he said
so I would take every step as it comes rather than having a lot of anxiety about what is going to come down the line,” Marina added
the majority of patients will have a good outcome.”
Ovidiu Moldovan was employed as a support worker by Search Consultancy Limited at the time of the incidents.
On March 26, 2023, it was alleged that he allowed the teenage girl to drive the service’s car in a public car park and used company funds to purchase a vape for her.
The support worker also reportedly communicated inappropriately with the service user on a number of occasions.
Following Moldovan’s termination of employment with Search Consultancy Limited, he continued to message the girl.
The man later failed to disclose to his new employers, Local Lanarkshire Care Ltd, that he was the subject of an Scottish Social Services Council investigation.
The report read: “You failed to maintain professional boundaries by sending [the girl] inappropriate messages and emojis.
“This caused [the girl] to question your motives and put [the girl] in the difficult position of having to report yourbehaviour to the service.
“[The girl] was a vulnerable young person who required support from agencies to keep her safe. Your behaviour put [the girl]’s residential placement at risk and had the potential to negatively affect her future engagement with social service workers.”
Moldovan was struck from the register after his behaviour was deemed “serious” and displayed “dishonesty”.

Computational Methods in Chemical Engineering
Volume 4 - 2022 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fceng.2022.900096
This paper presents an artificial intelligence (AI) based edge processing real-time maintenance system for the purposes of industrial manufacturing control and diagnostics
The system is evaluated in a soybean processing manufacturing facility to identify abnormalities and possible breakdown situations
The system can be used in any other manufacturing or chemical processing facility that make use of motors rotating equipment in different process phases
and diagnosis using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms
These algorithms are used with data resulting from the continuous monitoring of relevant production equipment and motor parameters
The condition monitoring integrates intelligent Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices with multiple sensors combined with AI-based techniques and edge processing
This is done to identify the parameter modifications and distinctive patterns that occur before a failure and predict forthcoming failure modes before they arise
The data from production equipment/motors is collected wirelessly using different communication protocols - such as Bluetooth low energy (BLE)
and Wi-Fi - and aggregated into an edge computing processing unit via several gateways
The AI-based algorithms are embedded in the processing unit at the edge
allowing the prediction and intelligent control of the production equipment/motor parameters
and sound/ultrasound detection are used with embedded signal processing that runs on an ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller
These devices are connected through either wired or wireless protocols
The system described addresses the components necessary for implementing the predictive maintenance (PdM) strategy in soybean industrial processing manufacturing environments
it includes new elements that broaden the possibilities for prescriptive maintenance (PsM) developments to be made
The type of ML or DL techniques and algorithms used in maintenance modeling is dictated by the application and available data
The approach presented combines multiple data sources that improve the accuracy of condition monitoring and prediction
DL methods further increase the accuracy and require interpretable and efficient methods as well as the availability of significant amounts of (labeled) data
The soybean chemical processing involves equipment/motors used in different production phases
One of the most critical equipment to monitor is the motor running the hammer mill located in the crushing area of the production line
Two parallel hammer mills are used for crushing the lumps in the soybean meal
the vibration and sound parameters are changing that can indicate an imminent accident
Measuring the parameters of motors/equipment (e.g.
etc.) in soybean production lines requires monitoring and acquisition devices as data sources for analysis and maintenance
two essential maintenance strategies are applied in the food manufacturing processes
Corrective maintenance considers all maintenance actions that are allocated and completed after a failure (e.g.
reacting to a system failure and correcting it)
Proactive maintenance addresses the routine functionality checks to identify upcoming faults and predict failures before their occurrence
Predictive and prescriptive maintenance approaches are part of the proactive maintenance strategies that take advantage of the latest technological developments in edge computing, AI, and IIoT. PdM (Hashemian, 2011) focuses on extending degradation mechanism knowledge and expanding the degradation propagation into the future to forecast system failures
This approach utilizes the knowledge and pattern discovery methodology
It also combines insights from degradation in past events with foreseen operating conditions in the future
and this supports a maintenance decision-making process
PsM applies degradation prediction information and extends the scope of the maintenance decision-making process beyond the motor/equipment itself
One data source for maintenance operations is represented by IIoT devices that monitors the vibration of the motors and equipment
The vibration analysis techniques include the vibration measurement and its interpretation
Vibration signals are measured using 3-axis microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based accelerometer sensors in the time domain
These signals are subsequently converted into the frequency domain through fast Fourier transform (FFT) processing
and the information is passed to the AI-based algorithms
When the motors and equipment are operating correctly
vibration is constant with a relatively small amplitude
When faults develop and the dynamic processes in the motors and equipment change
triggering the AI-based model to detect the deviations
The data-driven methods are using signal processing techniques to analyze the signal for data modeling
such as the Fourier-based analysis is used as an additional method for analyzing the vibration signals
The system development includes a learning process (i.e.
model training) that is based on historical raw sensor signals as well as an inference process where the trained AI-based model is exposed to real-time data to predict targets and make decisions
such as IIoT data acquisition and pre-processing feature engineering (e.g.
and selection) and AI-based model training and prediction
The data-driven PdM system is applied to industrial soybean processing manufacturing facilities
Different algorithms (Artificial Neural Network (ANN)
and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)) have been considered
This paper is organized into six main sections
The evolution of the PdM and PsM and the description of data-
model- and knowledge-driven predictive methods are presented in Section 2
Section 3 describes the intelligent real-time edge processing maintenance system architecture and design
The integration at the edge of the different ML and DL algorithms is described in Section 4
Section 5 addresses the experimental setup
Section 6 discusses future research challenges and presents the key open issues related to AI techniques and methods in implementing industrial PdM and PsM systems
The goal of maintenance for soybean production is to improve the performance
Motor failure may occur for a range of reasons such as loose bearings
such as reactive maintenance (RM) and preventive maintenance (PvM)
are gradually being replaced by PdM solutions
which is based on continuous monitoring of the condition of equipment using IIoT devices to collect real-time signals and to identify trends in motor/equipment behavior
It is then possible to predict failures using prediction tools
This paper presents an AI-based edge processing real-time maintenance system for controlling and diagnosing industrial manufacturing equipment
This approach reduces unscheduled downtime of motors in the production line via early detection of potential motor faults
The system can be further tuned to improve energy efficiency by monitoring and controlling loads and operating conditions
There are several approaches to PdM solutions for industrial processes (Jimenez et al., 2020)
knowledge-based models are built on experience and reflect in rules
or cases that have been collected during previous operation and maintenance of the motors or equipment
This approach is mainly used in diagnostic systems that use rule-
and fuzzy knowledge-based models for prognosis
Data-driven models use historical data and real-time data collected by sensors, IIoT devices, etc., to develop a model of normal system behavior. Data-driven approaches implement statistical (Carden and Fanning, 2004), stochastic, and ML or DL. Managing the uncertainty inherent in these collected data is a challenge for data-driven (Dai and Gao, 2013) models; however
this uncertainty can be mitigated by probability calculations
Physics or model-based approaches uses the laws of physics to assess component degradation
This approach incorporates a physical understanding of the target equipment and develops models to represent the system’s behavior
This approach models the physical behavior of the equipment and relies on the accuracy of simulations to measure degradation in specific components
Hybrid models combine different approaches in a multi-model solution
These models address complex PdM tasks by optimizing the type and amount of information and/or data sources and the number of targeted diagnostics and predictive elements
Electric motors and equipment are sources of noise and vibration
This noise and vibration can be used as a diagnostic tool in industrial maintenance
Noise and vibration associated with electrical issues are caused primarily by the action of unequal electromagnetic forces on the motor’s stator or rotor
Common causes of unequal magnetic forces include open or shorted rotor and stator windings and other inter-turn winding faults
static and/or dynamic air gap eccentricity
Vibration and noise in electric motors may occur due to mechanical
Mechanical problems typically involve defective bearings
or end winding damage due to mechanical shock
Aerodynamic problems typically involve ventilation fans and may include discrete blade passing frequencies (BPF)
The electromagnetic content of a noise or a vibration signal can be determined if the signal disappears immediately when the machine is switched off. A low-frequency narrowband analysis of the bearing vibration signal (Jin et al., 2014) can identify the shaft rotational frequency
The 50 Hz discrete frequency corresponds to the frequency of the electrical supply and the harmonic of the shaft rotational frequency
The discrete low-frequency component (around 3 Hz) is associated with base motion
specifically the induction motor unit and a centrifugal pump that is mounted on a steel mezzanine floor over a cooling pond
load) to collect data from industrial equipment/motors
Three types of accelerometers are used to measure vibrations: piezoelectric
Piezoelectric accelerometers usually use lead zirconate titanate (PZT) to sense vibrations and produce an electric charge that is converted to an electrical output under acceleration
Piezoelectric accelerometers have very low noise and can be used on a three-axis or single axis measurement setup
Piezoelectric accelerometers are AC coupled and cannot measure the gravity vector or sustained acceleration
A three-axis piezoelectric sensor that measures vibration in the x
and z directions can be used to measure tangential motion or vibration in the axis of rotation
Several mechanical forces in rotating machines (e.g.
soft footing) produce tangential motions in the casing that need to be measured and analyzed
Piezoelectric accelerometers are used extensively in applications that require broad temperature tolerance or that vibrate above 50 g
Piezoelectric accelerometers require external analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and pre-processing hardware
which increases the cost and the size of these sensors
Piezoresistive accelerometers use a strain gauge to measure changes to resistance under acceleration
The piezoresistive strain gauge requires amplification and temperature compensation
The sensors are DC coupled and have an extensive bandwidth (0 Hz to several thousand hertz)
The signal output can be integrated to calculate velocity and displacement during shock events
MEMS accelerometers are micromachined components that measure capacitive changes under acceleration
The MEMS based sensors are DC coupled and have low-power consumption
Advances in the performance of capacitive MEMS accelerometer sensors make them comparable to piezoelectric accelerometer sensors while retaining their advantages of lower costs
These advances include the integration of ADCs
and embedded processing building blocks for ML
Vibration can be used to monitor and diagnose the condition of industrial equipment for PdM
and detect problems such as load imbalance
New approaches can use the amplitude and frequency of a vibration to determine the type of failure
It defines a vibration severity standard that uses the Root Mean Square (RMS) velocity in Hz of the installed motor’s housing as a condition indicator
The measured vibration from the machine is classified based on machine size
The draft standard ISO/DIS 20816-3 (ISO/DIS 20816-3, 2022) document defines the general requirements for evaluating the vibration of various coupled industrial motor classes with a power above 15 kW and operating speeds (revolutions per minute (rpm) between 120 rpm and 30,000 rpm when measurements are made stationary
The non-rotating and rotating parts of industrial motors are measured under normal operating conditions
and the standard provides guidelines for evaluating these measurements
The guidelines call for steady vibration and define acceptable changes in vibration amplitude during use
ISO/DIS 20816–3 Guidelines for vibration monitoring
The PdM system presented in this paper uses different approaches that include statistical calculations
ML and DL techniques for vibration signals processing
The vibrations indicate motors unbalance, eccentricity, turbulence, resonance problems, misalignment of couplings and bearings, worn gears or bearings, rubbing, bent/cracked shafts, fan blade defects, defective/misadjusted drive belts/chains, sleeve-bearing problems, and mechanical looseness/weakness (Selcuk, 2016)
Vibration analysis can be used for detecting and identifying problems by having vibration pattern of the normal operating motor/equipment used as reference and then comparing and sorting subsequent patterns
Statistical time domain parameters such as peak, velocity and acceleration RMS, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, crest-, factor are used for describing the vibration signals (Wang et al., 2020)
Frequency-domain parameters offer additional information for fault diagnosis (Javed et al., 2015)
The vibration signals are transformed by applying the FFT
decomposing the signal into its different frequencies
Approaches such as time dependent frequency analysis
continuous and discrete wavelet transform are used for analyzing the vibration signals
AI systems use data, knowledge, and algorithms to simulate cognitive functions and learn and solve problems independently. Different clasifications and definitions of AI and machine intelligence are presented in Vermesan (2020)
fine-tuning the ML model on industrial edge devices is challenging
This process requires several iterations and checks to ensure that the edge devices have the computing and local storage capabilities to run the model training process in a reasonable amount of time
DL uses a complex structure of algorithms modelled on neural networks (NNs)
DL algorithms are seen as the mathematically complex evolution of ML algorithms
DL describes algorithms that analyze data with a logic structure through supervised and unsupervised learning using a layered topology of artificial NNs
DL requires large amounts of data and computing power
The development of transfer learning techniques—for example
using pre-trained models—can reduce the amount of data that are required
Feature extraction and classification in the DL algorithm are done in the same phase because the features are extracted automatically
The communication networks provide data transfer using different wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LoRaWAN. The wireless protocol stack IEEE 802.15.1 (IEEE 802.15.1, 2005) is used for Bluetooth communication by deploying IIoT sensors connected to a gateway via Bluetooth
The raw condition data from the IIoT sensors is transmitted to a secure server to be processed and analyzed
The Bluetooth IIoT devices operate within the 2.4 GHz radio range and use frequency hopping to enable the sensor devices to transmit RF signals in industrial environments where motors under monitoring are located
The IIoT devices integrate the sensors (vibration
etc.) and a system-on-chip processing unit that combines an Arm® processor with a floating-point unit (FPU)
with a 2.4 GHz multiprotocol radio (supporting Bluetooth software)
The Bluetooth IIoT devices are connected to an industrial-grade Bluetooth gateway with communication backhaul options for Wi-Fi and Ethernet
The wireless protocol stack IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, point-to-point/star/cluster-tree (IEEE 802.11ax, 2021)
in the ISM 2.4 GHz band is used for the Wi-Fi IIoT sensors and gateway
The Wi-Fi IIoT sensors are optimized to boost the radio link quality in industrial environments subject to random and diverse disturbances using two omnidirectional antennas that can assure a line-of-sight (LOS) maximum radio range of tens of meters
As the IIoT sensor nodes are operated in industrial environments (soybean production facility)
the radio range is extended by adding Wi-Fi bridges/repeaters
Wide Area (LPWA) networking protocol is used to enable several battery-operated IIoT sensors to connect wirelessly
forming a network architecture deployed in a star-of-stars topology where the gateways dispatch messages between IIoT devices and a central network server
The LoRaWAN platform has a layered topology comprising five layers: an IIoT device layer
The IIoT device layer is part of the micro-edge implementation and includes the sensors (three-axis vibration
and the embedded software and/or operating system
The gateway layer is part of the deep-edge implementation and includes the LoRa concentrator and the host microcontroller unit (MCU)
The LoRa concentrator entitles the gateway to receive and transmit LoRa messages and contains a LoRa baseband processor and two front-end chips
The LoRaWAN frequency band used is EU868 (863–870 Mhz)
Different options were evaluated for LoRaWAN system communication backhaul
The evaluation process has included LoRaWAN gateways connected online using a network server deployed by a third party or integrated into the gateway
An integrated LoRaWAN gateway solution stacked on a single-board computer is under evaluation
the network layer ensures communication between devices and gateways
and between gateways and network servers and application servers
The application layer includes the application server
which provides the information related to the gateways/devices profiles
categorizes the types of data based on properties of sensors
The processing/analysis layer can be used for applying AI/ML techniques for situation analysis
This layer utilizes all the information provided by the network and information layers by synthesizing information from multiple sources over time and identifying the events
ML and other AI techniques can learn and identify abnormal situations using the data collected
The PdM architecture deployed considers that the IIoT sub-systems are connected to different edge gateways. The information collected from the various IIoT devices is aggregated to an on-premises edge server, as presented in Figure 3
The proposed edge computing solution improves the performance
and reliability of IIoT and AI-based platform
An intelligent real-time edge processing maintenance system for industrial manufacturing
The system design is based on a heterogeneous wireless sensor network that consists of sensor nodes and IIoT devices with different communication interfaces
In industrial environments using real-time communication
and the reliability of the data may suffer from noise
and interferences from other devices using ISM bands
The signal strength may be severely affected by the reflections from the walls (multi-path propagation)
interferences from other devices using ISM bands (863–870 MHz or 2.4–2.5 GHz)
and the noise generated from the equipment or heavy machinery
It is essential to maintain data integrity under these conditions
The implementation solution presented in this paper addresses the wireless network performance requirements
and design as part of an edge processing concept to leverage the computing and storage capabilities of edge IIoT wireless devices
IIoT edge devices are optimally deployed to locations across the factory floor and placed on the motors/equipment
with several gateways and wireless repeaters implemented to address network overload
The gateway placement for protocols such as Bluetooth
Wi-Fi and LoRaWAN considers different characteristics of industrial systems
The traffic for monitoring IIoT devices and gateways in this implementation is characterized by small packets and relatively small communication distances that ensure the latency
and throughput to reliably collect and monitor the parameters for the motors/equipment
three gateways collect data from 32 IIoT nodes spread across the production facility for Bluetooth communication
Adopting edge processing using several IIoT devices associated with maintenance tasks that may have various latency and reliability requirements was part of the design
The optimal assignment of wireless gateways was adapted to the dynamic environment of intelligent soybean manufacturing systems to reduce interference
improve the monitoring and control of IIoT devices
a preliminary inspection of the site was performed for Wi-Fi connectivity
and an analysis of the load on different channels was conducted
the channel with a lower load was selected for each IIoT device
The PdM implementation performs maintenance based on the motors/equipment health status indicators
The edge computing approach is integrated and interfaced with industrial supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) infrastructure and linked through the historian component
The processing at the edge and the AI deployment use the data stored in the historian unit linked to the industrial SCADA system
The implementation and integration of data-driven PdM and edge intelligence follow the phases of the design methodology framework presented in Figure 4:
• Operational analysis and assessment
Design methodology framework for PdM edge intelligence integration
The operational analysis and evaluation include the operating conditions of the motors/equipment
environmental restrictions on data acquisition
The data collection and acquisition include the conversion and processing the signals from the IIoT sensors into data and information to be modeled by AI-based techniques
The PdM system performance depends on the efficient design and implementation of the components covered by the functions integrated in this phase
The feature engineering phase implements the signal functions by implementing functional module for time-
frequency- and time-frequency domain analysis
The AI modelling phase includes the AI model selection (based on the model complexity
labeled/unlabeled data) and the model prediction (with requirements such as time-efficiency
An essential feature of the proposed solution is that the model training is carried out at the edge (micro-
and the computing power and energy requirements are aligned with the computing power and storage capacity of the edge devices
For the model to be deployed on edge devices
the model is developed to optimize computing resources
Activating AI processing loads at the micro-edge (sensors/actuators and chips/microcontrollers) level makes various data collection processes faster and more data rich
The transition to the AI-embedded circuit technologies allows for offloading of network-data-carrying loads while providing edge real-time information
Activating AI processing loads at the micro-edge level system on a chip (SoC) allows implementation of intelligent distributed IIoT device architectures that distribute
and offload data-processing loads to different layers of application architecture across the edge continuum
improving data management and processing and optimizing communication bandwidth
Manufacturing processes powered by AI-enabled decisions at the edge
use edge AI circuits as part of the more extensive industrial system integrated into upstream and downstream operations
Integrating AI software and hardware stacks into industrial processes has many challenges
programming AI-based SoCs and deploying these systems to various industrial applications
Edge IIoT architecture integrates AI methods/algorithms to pre-process information in real-time at the edge and transfer relevant and valuable data to industrial processes
The PdM design methodology framework is used as the basis for the AI-based edge processing real-time maintenance system for industrial manufacturing control and diagnostics
which will be integrated into several layers that map to the functional domains of the high-level reference hybrid system’s architecture
The AI-based edge processing real-time maintenance system layers are:
rotating speed) are monitored as input signals to represent the performance of the motor/equipment
By using the vibration signal to perceive the status of the motor/equipment
vibration monitoring is considered appropriate for identifying failure
the vibration information can precisely identify defects in the motor or equipment operations
The accelerometer signals are pre-processed
and time-frequency domains are applied to acceleration and velocity signals to extract valuable intelligence about the motor condition
Signal data analysis and engineering processing includes data processing in the time, frequency, and wavelet domains as illustrated in Figure 5
engineering processing and AI-based model building flow
Time series forecasting refers to the estimation of parameters that change over time
These parameters are measured until instant t and the value that will be predicted is instant t + dt
variable of interest measurements can be obtained at regular intervals
making it possible to predict future values
• Trends or long-term increase/decrease in values
or phenomena that determine changes in values over time
which push fluctuating increase/decrease in values
that do not always have the same duration (i.e.
One of the most important things to understand when analyzing data is the relationship between the measured quantities
The time-domain analysis of the signals measured by the IIoT devices on motors/equipment makes use of several statistical time-domain features
The time domain statistical parameters, equations and description is presented in Table 1
The vibration RMS velocity technique determines the vibration signal’s trends over time
and monitoring RMS velocity trends provides an indicator of wear that is compared to pre-determined thresholds
Acceleration is compared to pre-determined thresholds to detect bending or breakage in mechanisms for motors
Many defects typically display periodic “spikes” in the signal
such as increasing acceleration or instability in the acceleration profile over time
Because these features examine the probability density function (PDF) of the signal
which changes when the condition of the motor/equipment changes
the skewness and kurtosis can be affected accordingly
Skewness measures whether the signal is negatively or positively skewed
and kurtosis measures the peak value of the PDF and indicates whether the signal is an impulse in nature (e.g.
Normal operation motor vibration signals have a normal distribution and a skewness value of zero
While kurtosis is calculated from the peak of the PDF of the vibration signal
skewness is obtained from the mean value of the PDF of the vibration signal
The kurtosis value of the normal motor’s vibration signal is around three
and the skewness value is approximately zero
When the PDF of the vibration signal changes due to faults/failures
the kurtosis increases to a value greater than three
and the skewness shifts to a negative or positive value
The entropy of the vibration signal can be calculated as the histogram of the PDF, and it measures the degree of randomness in the vibration signal. Based on the features mentioned above, several of the following non-dimensional features can be calculated (Caesarendra and Tjahjowidodo, 2017):
represents a value affected by an object’s shape but independent of its dimensions
defined as the standard deviation divided by the RMS
calculates how much impact happens during the rolling element and tread contact
Using a FFT to convert the acceleration and velocity data from the time domain to the frequency domain offers more detailed insights into motor conditions
a strong signal at a single frequency related to the rotation rate can indicate an imbalance or bent shaft in motors
General looseness or a broken gear tooth can be impacted by introducing different harmonic content
A strong signal amplitude modulated by a lower frequency is a diagnostic tool for gear mesh analysis and can be identified by examining the frequency domain
and F (ω) the frequency-dependent Fourier transform and t representing time
The FFT is an algorithm that computes the discrete Fourier transform (Heckbert, 1998; Seryasat et al., 2010). In order to deal with large amount of sampling vibration data, short time Fourier transform (STFT) analysis that combines time domain with frequency domain to analyze the vibration characteristics of the target points in a long period and wavelet transform (WT) is used (Zhu et al., 2014)
the sensor bandwidth of the vibration accelerometers ranges from 0.1 Hz to 5–10 kHz for synchronous AC motors with speeds up to 3,600 rpm and DC motors with speeds from 10 to 7,000 rpm or more
As changes in the acceleration reading or temperature accumulate throughout the velocity data integration
vibration monitoring sensors must have good stability over time and across temperatures
The vibration sensor should be as small as possible to maximize the options for placement on the monitored motors/equipment
The vibration sensor’s mass should be low to prevent it from affecting the motors’ vibration characteristics
The experimental set-up comprises the physical/field part
and the IIoT devices mounted on the motors
The system is intended to monitor electric motors such as such as AEG AM 225 MX4 (hammer mill/crushing) with the following characteristics: 45 kW power
and ∼1,500 rpm; and ABB HXR 315 4 B3/HXUR 638G2 B3 (preparation/conditioning) with the following characteristics: 200 kW power
smaller motors with lower vibration frequency characteristics have been installed on the lab bench
The PdM demonstrator performs maintenance based on the health status indicators of the motors and equipment
The IIoT-based sensors are used to measure unusual patterns of the motors’ parameters
such distinctive patterns can precede potential failures
The sensor integrated into the IIoT device (Sensor Tile Wireless Industrial Node, 2022) used in the experiments is a three-axis MEMS accelerometer that contains three ultrawide bandwidth (DC to 6 kHz) acceleration sensors
The MEMS accelerometer sensor operates from 2.1 to 3.6 V with a low current consumption of 1.1 mA
The operating temperature ranges from −40°C to +105°C
and the MEMS vibration sensor has a selectable sensitivity (±2
or ±16 g) that can be tailored to a range of application requirements
There is another three-axis MEMS accelerometer in the same IIoT device and a three-axis gyrometer for six degrees of motion sensing
including an inter-integrated circuit interface
a programmable finite state machine for data processing
STWIN sensor tile wireless industrial node
STM32 ARM Cortex M-based boards allow AI/ML to integrate easily and cost effectively
They can run autonomously at the edge with no cloud connection
which provides privacy data security and optimizes latency
the PdM application was described using statistical and predictive modeling techniques to identify patterns in historical data and capture the relationships among the relevant parameters and factors
This process allowed to assess the capabilities and risks associated with PdM
In this section, the process is extended by applying ML to real-time measurements of selected key parameters to assess the current and future functioning. The fusing of the PdM application with ML/DL is shown in Figure 7
The fusing encompasses all the steps in the pipeline generation based on the sensor data
including feature extraction and selection
The ML solution creates untrained ML models to be embedded in MCUs
running unsupervised learning algorithms directly on the target microcontroller
Given that the training process is integrated within the device
Several optimizing and configuration features are therefore available
such as limiting random access memory (RAM) and flash memory
generation of alternative candidates and selection of the best model candidate
A microcontroller emulator can be used to test and debug the model before deployment on the device
The DL solution creates pretrained NN models with frameworks such as Tensorflow
or ONNX and converts them into optimized code for the MCUs
It can also optimize memory usage during runtime and run large NNs by storing weights and activation buffers in external flash memory and RAM
end-to-end solutions for anomaly detection and classification tasks
but they are complementary rather than mutually exclusive
The ML solution is based on unsupervised algorithms and is completely automated
As it skips the complexity of full pipeline generation based on the data
it is intended as a rapid prototyping system
Both solutions generate optimized code to be included in the microcontroller application
and both run on-device inference and display output
anomaly detection with ML solution provides a dynamic model to detect anomalies in the PdM system
Based on the sensor data representing both normal and abnormal behavior
a set of model candidates is generated using various ML algorithms
Accuracy reflects the candidate’s ability to correctly identify normal signals as normal behavior and abnormal signals as abnormal behavior
whereas confidence reflects the candidate’s ability to separate the two
The generation process for the best candidates can be stopped any time after achieving satisfactory results; however
it is recommended that the process runs as long as the accuracy and confidence are lower than 80%
the selected candidate for the PdM application has an accuracy of 98.95%
RAM 5.7kB + Buffer 6.2kB and Flash 13.2 kB
The selected model can be installed on multiple systems mounted on different motors
Each model will learn its motor’s behavior and create a distinct trained model
the models take the vibrations coming from the motors as input and are able to identify and report anomalies correctly
The models will function based on a state machine, as shown in Figure 8
The model functions for the “init,” “learning” and “detection” states are called in the main loop
the model runs a predefined number of training cycles
it switches to inference mode and is ready to detect anomalies as required by the PdM application
either periodically or with a user interrupt callback
The ML model was implemented with NanoEdge AI Studio (https://www.st.com/en/development-tools/nanoedgeaistudio.html), following the flowchart as shown in Figure 9
Flow chart for implementation of an AI-based model with NanoEdge AI Studio
The flow steps in the chart are detailed in the following text:
the maximum amount of RAM and flash can be set
a simple datalogger code was generated that reads and logs the raw sensor data directly on the serial port of the processing device
so that logs can be retrieved from a computer using serial tools such as Tera Term or from the console of the integrated development environment (IDE)
The signals for normal and abnormal behavior can be imported from different sources, and all settings can be configured in the graphical user interface (GUI); no code writing is required at this stage. Different configurations exist in terms of data format, sensor inputs and using a serial interface or secure digital (SD) card to store the data. The signals can be visualized as shown in Figure 10
in both temporal and frequency plots for the accelerometer Z-axis
Visualization of normal (A) and abnormal (B) signals
a collection of 100 signals was acquired for each normal and abnormal behavior
at a baud rate at 115,200 bps and with a buffer size of 512 samples on each axis
With a sampling frequency of 1,667 Hz
each buffer represents a temporal signal of ∼300 ms
which is sufficient to capture the essence of motor vibration patterns
Filter settings were activated in the signal pre-processing steps
only the frequencies that represent the characteristics of the motor vibration are kept
Filtering techniques also help eliminate high-frequency noise that interferes with the vibration signal
the signals can be visualized in both the temporal and frequency plots for the accelerometer Z-axis
The graph’s x-axis corresponds to the number of samples (512)
while the y-values contain an indication of the mean value of each sample across all 100 signals
The abnormal signal was acquired by applying a variation to the load of the motor
leading to the similarity dropping instantly while an anomaly occurs as expected
It is important to note that these signals mainly provide context for the automatic search for the most efficient algorithms and optimization for target AI-based embedded systems during benchmarking
The model is trained on the target directly
where only the “normal” behaviors are learned
the benchmarking process starts searching through a pool of ML algorithms and tests combinations of three elements: preprocessing
Each combination is a library that is evaluated for balanced accuracy
and the results provide a ranking of these libraries
Each library has its own emulator, which allows for easy testing with real data to determine if it provides acceptable results, without the need to download, link or compile. If the library functions as expected, it can be deployed and downloaded in the form of a library and header file. The firmware wrapped with the generated files is then compiled and flashed onto the microcontroller target. A snapshot from the anomaly detection is shown in Figure 11
Model benchmarking and snapshot from the inference state
anomaly detection with a DL solution entails a model generated and trained using a ML framework being input into a model converter or code generator in order to deploy it on the embedded device
Various converters are available to reduce the size and other resource requirements so that models developed using high-end APIs can be deployed on boards
For the implementation of the AI/DL solution
code generation was chosen in which the model is translated into a low-level programming language more suitable for embedded devices in terms of performance
Inferences can be made with high accuracy while also accounting for limited resources; the generated files and NN library are then merged with the firmware
and flashed onto the target microcontroller
The CNN architecture for the PdM proof-of-concept is a sequential model, with one input and output layer and four hidden layers: one convolution layer, one pooling layer, and two dense layers (Figure 12)
CNN architecture and the overview of the NN model
The input layer is a one-dimensional time series sensor data
comprising of motor vibrations along the X,Y,Z axis
the appropriate number and size of the convolution kernel performs one dimensional convolution operations
vanishing gradient problem is avoided and better computation performance is obtained
The max-pooling layer is appended to the convolutional layer and carries out a 2 × 1 max-pooling operation
the extracted features from output of the max-pooling convolution layer are extended to a one-dimensional vector
A dropout operation with a ratio set to 0.3 is executed after the first dense layer
It randomly selects and deletes neurons from the model in order to form a random subset of the neurons
and enhanced the generalization ability of the NN model
one normal behavior and three types of abnormal behavior are identified after training
The model was implemented in Python using Keras
with the layers designed and added one-by-one
the sensor data was classified with one normal behavior and three types of abnormal behavior
The trained model was saved in an open-source HDF5/H5.h5 file (Hierarchical Data Format version 5)
The conversion into optimized C code was implemented with STM32 Cube AI
which offers simple and efficient interoperability with ML frameworks
The state machine consists mainly of two states with two functions “init” and “process”
with the former initializing the NN model and the latter being a continuously running function for collecting raw data from the sensors on board and making inferences in real-time
The fusion of PdM application with AI/DL solution is shown in Figure 13
The fusion of PdM application with AI/DL solution
An overview of the NN model is given in Figure 12
showing the required memory needed to store the model and how many multiply-and-accumulate (MAC) operations are required
Various experiments were conducted with both TensorFlow Lite and Cube. AI on the same model as described above. The results show that the latter is faster and requires less flash and RAM than the former (Figure 14)
Comparison of results using a model converter (TensorFlow Lite) and code generator (Cube.AI)
for anomaly detection based on sensor measurements
current consumption and temperature variations
SVM) are very efficient and easy to configure
and they can be trained on the target directly
minimal amount of data input is needed to select the proper algorithm
The results also showed that the combination of CNN with the optimization outperformed traditional ML techniques (RF
The model created by the AI/DL solution achieved accuracy rates as high as 98% for one of the datasets and 95% for the other
the DL solution for PdM requires more investment than ML solutions
The ML solution was implemented with NanoEdge AI Studio
whereas the DL solution was implemented with CUBE
The former is a useful toolkit to test the ML solution and using proper input signal capturing and formatting and correctly selecting the generated libraries
it is possible to obtain useful results for the PdM application
The latter has proven to be a useful toolkit for implementing the DL solution
due to interoperability with various ML frameworks
more features have been considered: classification
which enables automatic identification of a machine state among many different possible states and extrapolation
which uses mathematical regression models in order to estimate a target value using other known features
The classification library can be used on top of the anomaly detection library to determine the source of the problem after an anomaly has been detected
The extrapolation library can be used to predict future behavior
The insight and results will be valuable for the DL solution
It is important to note that the above frameworks
although designed for the food processing industry
can be applied to other manufacturing sectors
or similar facilities involving motors and equipment that are in need of PdM
This section discusses various current open research and innovation topics and provides recommendations for future research directions on different issues related to intelligent maintenance systems for industrial manufacturing
Continued research on developing new algorithms for multi-sensors and multi-protocol techniques for data analytics using ML and DL is needed especially for PdM solutions that require considerable amounts of data to train extensive neural networks
This implies that the development of robust algorithms that use small-scale datasets that can provide similar accuracy as those that rely on more comprehensive datasets is necessary
Developing techniques to enhance the scalability and model migration across devices in the edge continuum from micro-
These features are essential for a trained model to ensure enhanced applicability when applied to other devices at the edge
Another future research area is related to the dataset structure and the requirement to balance the feature of datasets used in PdM solutions using ML and DL algorithms
This issue is important because many challenges need to be addressed when handling mechanical and electrical data that are measured from the motors/equipment
the balance between the observed data volume for normal operations of the motors/equipment that far exceeds the practical data volume for an anomalous operation is a critical issue
This imbalance between the two creates problems in model training
which requires more data under fault status scenarios to construct a more balanced complete dataset
The significance of data to AI-based algorithm’s performance is self-evident
further research is needed to implement less complex acquisition systems based on IIoT devices at the edge using datasets originating from the actual industrial operating motors/equipment in addition to the public datasets provided by a few open-source platforms
The use of in situ datasets improves the fine-tuning of the AI-based model and helps solve practical problems in industrial manufacturing more efficiently
Unsupervised learning based on training the AI-based model with unlabeled data in PdM implementations is another significant research direction in the future
The existing AI solutions mainly focus on supervised learning that requires datasets to be uniquely labeled
Further research is needed to study the efficiency of the AI-based models used in PdM applications
the benchmarking tools for evaluating these models
The misdiagnosis and mitigation actions that address a certain degree of loss or breakdown of the system under maintenance are essential elements that must be evaluated to provide safe and reliable industrial PdM systems

The Netherlands captain has opened up about why he embraced the official after his side's 2-2 draw with Germany
Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has explained why he consoled the referee after his side's 2-2 draw with Germany
The Liverpool star scored late on as Oranje recovered from 2-0 down to earn a point which secured their place in the finals of the UEFA Nations League
Once the full-time whistle sounded at the Veltins Arena on Monday evening
Van Dijk consoled Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan
And Van Dijk has since revealed the reason for the beautiful gesture was because the official had learned of his mother's passing, with Digi Sport reporting that Hategan heard the news at half-time of the match after asking his family to be kept informed.
In quotes reported by Voetbal International
he said: "He told me his mum recently passed away
"I consoled him and told him he refereed well
Van Dijk has emerged as a true leader in what has been a remarkable revival of the Netherlands' fortunes of late
The Dutch were in a state of disarray after missing out on qualification for the World Cup
leading to Ronald Koeman's arrival as manager
Koeman quickly installed Van Dijk as the Netherlands' new captain and also introduced a number of talented young stars into the national team
And the 1988 European Championship winners confirmed that they are well and truly on the up after beating France 2-0 before drawing with Germany in the space of three days

There is a thin thread connecting Long Island City and the Greek capital
It is a story of expertise in the transformation of materials that speaks the language of design
is their production workshop: an 800-square-metre factory producing design objects made of resin
They are Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis
which has recently been joined by a production space
a Romanian artisan who ran a workshop on Long Island dedicated to the production of resin objects
Ovidiu then produced objects on commission from artists
and small reproductions of the Statue of Liberty that tourists raved about
the man had come up with innovative and secret recipes
developing techniques that had never been used before
“Since Ovidiu was nearing retirement and his sons would not take over his business,” Petaloti explains
“we took Colea’s laboratory and transported it to Piraeus
an area of Athens that used to be home to many factories.” This move gave the Objects of Common Interest the possibility to control their production
only two years before moving to New York together
and the dream of returning to their homeland to give back what they had learned elsewhere was an idea that always animated their imaginations
The first project to come out of the Piraeus factory was Chronos
an installation curated by Milan-based studio Mr.Lawrence for the latest edition of Design Miami in December 2022
it consisted of three new resin lighting designs: the Polymorph Cast Aluminum lounge chair and two Metamorphic Rocks
reminiscent of the organic shapes of a rock
which has since been incorporated into many of their projects
not least the large public installation Light On
conceived for Piazza della Libertà in Bergamo
as the winner of an international competition for the symbolic installation of the Italian Capital of Culture 2023
The intervention on the imposing fascist-era Casa della Libertà consists of a serpentine light installation to connect the public to the building
and equipped the square with public seating made of marble cutouts
“Public installations have the power to transform
even for their short duration when temporary
beyond the initial aesthetic perception,” the designers explain
“They disrupt known norms and established habits
they challenge preconceptions of a place that has been familiar for years or decades
as in the case of Piazza de la Libertà in Bergamo”
“With each public installation we add a pool of ideas that builds our collective experience for future projects
The one in Bergamo is the largest and longest we have made to date and is a continuous and active source of inspiration and information for us as designers in relation to the reaction of the people who interact with it.”
Translucency is another hallmark of the work of the two designers

Two years ago in Alicante Romania’s Ovidiu IONESCU reached the final of the individual European Championships
He has lost to Timo BOLL but the success achieved by IONESCU meant that he became only the second ever Romanian to reach the final of a Men’s Singles event at a European Championships; the one other was Radu NEGULESCU in 1960 in Zagreb
Radu was beaten in the final by the Hungary’s Zoltan BERCZIK
We hope that he will have the chance to try to go one step further this year in Poland’s Warsaw where the ITTF European individual Championships will take place
However the break in tournaments we used to talk about the past
IONESCU revealed that his starts were “accidental”
“I remember that my brother was not allowed by his classmates to play table tennis in the school yard so he asked Santa to bring us two rackets
As soon as we received it we started to play on my father desk all day long
Initially it was funny for my parents but after a while it got a little bit annoying
I had a lot of energy so they brought me to the table tennis club in my hometown ” said IONESCU
When you realize will become your professional call
“When I first moved to Germany in my youth I knew I was going to do everything in power to become a professional table tennis player.”
Have you ever felt you had enough and wanted to stop
I love this sport too much with all its ups and downs.”
I was 10 years old and I had won the top 10 for the first time
My parents were with me and they even bought me a water machine gun as a present.”
“I think both when I won silver at European and World Championships are the happiest moments for me
You want to believe you can make it and when you actually do it you cannot compare it with anything else in the sport
Place that made greatest impression on you
Being surrounded by all the great athletes proved to me that it is always good to chase your dreams.”
“For me Roger FEDERER is the best role model inside and outside the court.”
“A more recent one would be in European games in mixed doubles final
The winner would get directly the Olympic ticket
Our opponents Petrissa SOLJA and Patrick FRANZISKA played perfectly and we did not stand a chance.”
“I hope people in Romania will start to follow more and more table tennis and that table tennis will become a more recognized sport countrywide.”
“As the Olympics postponed for a year the next goal is to get a gold medal at European Championships doesn’t matter the event.”
The European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) is the governing body of the sport of table tennis in Europe
and is the only authority recognized for this purpose by the International Table Tennis Federation
The ETTU deals with all matters relating to table tennis at a European level
including the development and promotion of the sport in the territories controlled by its 58 member associations
and the organization of continental table tennis competitions
The Bucharest court sentenced Ovidiu Tender to 11 years and 4 months of jail time on Tuesday
Marian Iancu was sentenced to 13 years and opt months of prison for the same charges
The court’s decision is not final and can be appealed
The two business men were trialed for the same file in 2006, with Alina Bica as the main prosecutor. Bica was recently indicted for a case involving real estate fraud.
Tender and Iancu were found guilty of illegal taking over Carom SA Onesti where they caused damages of RON 140 million
Carom SA was part of the Onest Petrochemical Platform
The two business men drained Carom’s resources through a complicated financial system

Ovidiu Anton won Romania’s Selectia Nationala 2016 with “Moment Of Silence” on Sunday
but the song’s echo is still fresh in our mind
Backed by a symphonic rock melody and a voice to silence all competition
the Moment of Silence lyrics also helped Ovidiu gather enough support from both the jury and televoters
It was a fifth time lucky for Ovidiu Anton, who placed third last year with “Still Alive”. The singer penned the song and lyrics for “Moment Of Silence” in the aftermath of the Colectiv club fire. After three days of national mourning
thousands took to the streets of Bucharest in the following nights and eventually toppled the corrupt government
ultimately considered to be responsible for the death of 63 people and crippling many others
rather than being a tribute to the victims — Ovidiu made it quite clear from the start that he didn’t want to use that national tragedy for winning Selectia Nationala — Romania’s song is a rallying cry to fight for the truth and against the political and religious establishment

art enthusiasts are to encounter an extraordinary fusion of art heritage
as “Brancusi Reimagined” unveils an unprecedented exhibition in Timisoara
a key part of the Capital of Culture’s official programme
iconic sculptures from Constantin Brancusi’s transformative period
sourced from prestigious global institutions like the Pompidou Centre and Tate Gallery
will converge with works from his early years
drawn from Romania’s diverse array of museum and private collections
Business Review sat down with Ovidiu Sandor
the Commissioner of the Exhibition titled “Brancusi: Romanian Sources and Universal Perspectives,” as well as the President of the Art Encounters Foundation
to delve into the intricacies of this remarkable exhibition
How does the exhibition showcase and honour Constantin Brancusi’s heritage and what significance does this hold for Romania as his country of origin?
The exhibition is a well-deserved symbolic Brancusi homecoming
since the last Romanian exhibition dedicated to the great sculptor happened over 50 years ago
It will be a good opportunity for Romanians to see important works
there is also an exhibition debunking many of the associated myths and distorted images of Brancusi
and the catalogue complementing the exhibition are even more arguments to come and (re)discover Brancusi
this exhibition recovers and addresses Brancusi’s Romanian origins and presents the different stages of his artistic journey
I think the exhibition is about Brancusi’s importance for Romanian culture and
Timisoara is not only the European Capital of Culture but also the country’s cultural capital this year
We should link Timisoara to Brancusi through multiculturalism and respect for tradition
healthy continuity in the evolution of a society
We are happy to be able to exhibit in Timisoara one of the great values of universal culture and art
as we did with Victor Brauner earlier this year
thus promoting two of the great artists who lived in France and contributed to the excellent relationship between the two countries
How did the curators manage to gather sculptures from major museums like the Pompidou Centre and Tate Gallery for this exhibition in Romania?
securing the loans was one of the most complicated aspects
Owners of such works are usually very selective when it comes to lending them
The Art Encounters Foundation had partnered up with Centre Pompidou in previous collaborative projects
I am involved in the work of both Tate and Pompidou
Doina Lemny also ran the Brancusi Studio in Paris for many years and had access to the fabulous Brancusi archives
and her experience preparing Brancusi exhibitions is invaluable
these factors built the trust needed for these loans to be granted
proving that we can have high-standard exhibitions in Romania
What role does Doina Lemny play as the curator of the exhibition and how has her expertise in Brancusi’s art contributed to the curation process?
Doina has certainly played a decisive role
She is a renowned international expert on the work and life of Constantin Brancusi
having signed the curatorial concept for many other exhibitions dedicated to the Romanian sculptor
both at the Atelier Brancusi in Pompidou as well as in Brussels
She lives and breathes Brancusi and she’s dedicated her life as a researcher to the many layers of this fascinating figure
I couldn’t think of anyone better to curate such an exhibition in Timisoara because this exhibition and its proposed concept are at a standard that Doina Lemny masters very well
the exhibition’s curator will stage in Timisoara the most truthful
and well-informed Brancusi event you’ll ever see
How does this exhibition compare to previous ones curated by Doina Lemny in terms of scale and significance
It is the first exhibition in several decades in which Brancusi is placed in a Romanian context
Doina’s expertise and her relationships with the owners of these works and many other people around the phenomenon were essential
“Romanian sources and universal perspectives” is an exhibition that presents in a balanced way the Romanian influences in Brancusi’s work
the successive refinement of specific themes
and their conversion into universal forms and artworks that are recognisable everywhere
The exhibition will present over 100 works
The scale of the exhibition is aligned with the available space and budget constraints
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in organising an exhibition of this magnitude and level of international collaboration
the biggest challenge was securing the loans for the works
the Timisoara National Museum of Art had to undergo a crucial technical upgrade with the unconditional support of the Timis County Council
Organising transport and insurance for such works was an essential and sensitive management element
But there is also a lot about harmonising the way of working between Romanian public institutions (the Timis County Council
institutions from other countries (the French Institute
the Museums from which we’ve borrowed pieces
and a private institution (Art Encounters)
But the team we’ve built is diverse and professional and it had a good learning-by-doing stage in preparing the Victor Brauner exhibition
even if sometimes we encounter challenges in organising the flow of visitors
How does the exhibition contribute to promoting Brancusi’s heritage and Romanian cultural identity on a global stage
it is the first Brancusi exhibition set in a Romanian context
The international press has shown interest in coming to the grand opening
It’s great that this retrospective is taking place in Timisoara
to be followed by an extensive retrospective at the Pompidou during the Olympic Games in 2024
Centre Pompidou will close for renovation for 4-5 years
the Brancusi Studio will be located at the heart of the refurbished building
What challenges have you been facing during the planning phase and how do you overcome them
Are there any specific technological or multimedia elements incorporated into the exhibition
While Brancusi doesn’t need bling to be interesting
the exhibition aims to present Brancusi’s works in their physical shape
just as the artist intended and designed them
the video images he filmed (something quite avant-garde at the time)
and so on do not need technology to entertain a faithful and spectacular image of the great sculptor
We feel that Brancusi needs to be presented in a pure form
What are your expectations in terms of the public’s response and what impact do you hope the exhibition will have on visitors’ understanding and appreciation of Brancusi’s art
We hope it will be an occasion for it to be noticed by audiences in the city and from across the country
It will also be interesting for an international audience
We believe it is essential to present Brancusi in his country
in a balanced display of the Romanian influences on his work
but in the dynamics of the evolution of his oeuvre towards the universal masterpieces that made him famous
It is an exhibition that had to be done and I don’t think there’s a better context than “Timisoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture.” We are aware of a number of cultural initiatives that will take place in the context of this exhibition
From young artists entering a dialogue with Brancusi to theatre plays and other events prepared by various NGOs or cultural organisations
these complementary projects prove the importance of Brancusi for Romanian culture as well as his present-day relevance
What value do you believe this exhibition brings to the art community and the public
How does it contribute to the broader cultural landscape
We all think we know who Brancusi is and that we know his work
This exhibition is also an excellent opportunity to discover new things
means something completely different when witnessed in public
Revisiting the pillars of Romanian culture is necessary
the Brancusi exhibition will leave behind a critical legacy and set up a bar for the Museum’s future projects
We believe this kind of landmark event somehow changes the entire cultural landscape and forces this art community into much-needed questions and discussions about Brancusi’s artistic legacy
He may not have represented Romania at Eurovision last year, but the awards keep coming for Ovidiu Anton. After winning Selectia Nationala 2016 with “Moment Of Silence”
the same single has now brought him victory in the Best Pop-Rock Song category at the Romanian Radio Music Awards
The rock singer, who was denied the chance to perform in Stockholm just weeks ahead of the rehearsals because broadcaster TVR had not paid its debts to the EBU
got his revenge one year later by winning the coveted award with “Moment Of Silence”
Ovidiu addressed the hard road that rock music has to take in order to get to its audience
“Since I was little and throughout my music career
‘It’s hard to be a rocker.’ I got my own band and people said
‘It’s hard to be a rocker.’ I went to Eurovision and everyone said
‘It’s hard to be a rocker.’ But [my band and I] have grown up and we don’t listen to them
And manage he did: not only did he win Selectia Nationala 2016 with “Moment Of Silence”
but also one of the most prestigious awards for the same song
We hope that this new triumph gives Ovidiu closure and new strength to rock on
Sharing a photo of the trophy via Facebook
Ovidiu thanked Radio Romania and his country
as well as “those who believed in this song in the most beautiful but also in the hardest moments”
the singer is still haunted by the fact that he won Selectia Nationala after trying five times
only to be denied to perform on the Eurovision stage in the eleventh hour
last night he also took the time to praise the physique of Suzanne — the skin-tillating sister of wiwibloggs’ founder William
Ovidiu says: “I will take a moment of… admiration.” We love that he stays in such close contact with his fans
We’re certainly glad that the singer is in good spirits! We wholeheartedly congratulate him and hope that he will one day change his mind about returning to the Eurovision arena
And how well do you think Ovidiu would have fared in Stockholm last year

Leiden Centre for Continental Philosophy is pleased to announce a talk by Ovidiu Stanciu
Director del Programa de Doctorado Instituto de Filosofía
My talk aims to propose a phenomenological approach to the questions of the world and alienness
by drawing on the analyses put forth by Bernhard Waldenfels and Maurice Merleau-Ponty
I will start out by reconstructing the outlines of the experience of the alien
this experience can function as a powerful impetus enabling us to call into question some of the most deeply held commitments of Western philosophical tradition: the sovereignty of the ego
I will maintain that a patient analysis of this experience compels us to undertake an inquiry concerning the “inter-world,” understood as the place of the encounter and the threshold of separation between the self and the alien
drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s alternative description of the “inter-world,” I will claim that Waldenfels’s account is insufficiently radical and show that the in-between realm cannot be assimilated to an interstice lodged between two insulated spheres
the “inter-world” should be conceived of as a shared dimension
subtending the partition between the spheres of ownness and alienness

A helicopter pilot who made an emergency landing Wednesday on Milwaukee Avenue in Prospect Heights before the craft flipped onto its side credited his flight instructor and God for his survival and minimal property damage
"I did the best I could in that situation," said 35-year-old Niles resident Ovidiu Astalus
who walked away from the wreck with a dislocated shoulder and minor injuries
The emergency occurred about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, shortly after Astalus took off from the nearby Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling
Astalus' company, Crown Point Truck & Trailer Repair, owns the Robinson R44 Raven II aircraft
and he was headed to a helipad at the firm's Morton Grove headquarters
The helicopter was built earlier this year, federal aviation records indicate
Astalus was the craft's only occupant Wednesday
When the helicopter, which is black and emblazoned with the company logo and website address, was 200 to 300 feet over the Dam No. 1 Woods forest preserve
its engine began racing and slowing uncontrollably
Whereas an airplane in trouble sometimes can glide to an emergency landing
a helicopter that loses engine power typically has only a few rotor spins before it plummets to the ground
Astalus chose a spot on Milwaukee Avenue at Apple Drive to land
later saying he tried to land far ahead of oncoming cars so they could see him in time and avoid hitting the aircraft
the helicopter's overhead rotor blades struck a nearby light pole
knocking down the pole and forcing the aircraft onto its right side
Wheeling Deputy Fire Chief Steve Mella was on his way to fire station No
which is on Milwaukee Avenue about one mile from the airport
but that's not terribly unusual," Mella said
firefighters were heading to the landing site
Mella activated his vehicle's emergency lights and joined them
The helicopter came down about 15 or 20 feet from a concrete barrier separating the road from the forest preserve and the Des Plaines River
"Whether it was luck or skill I don't know
"He ended up in an open intersection and didn't end up in the river or hit any of the businesses (in the area)."
who said he got his pilot's license earlier this year and has about 150 hours of flight experience
got out of the craft on his own before emergency crews arrived
Prospect Heights and Des Plaines responded with trucks and equipment specially designed for aircraft-related disasters
Astalus was taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview and released later in the day
"Thanks to God and thanks to the instructor I had," he said
A section of Milwaukee Avenue was closed for about three hours until the helicopter could be loaded onto a flatbed truck and taken back to the airport
The airport was closed for eight minutes after the landing Wednesday
The runway closest to the landing site remained closed for more than three hours as a precaution
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating
A tweet from the airport's official account thanked local police and fire departments for their quick response
"They work hard at drills and training year-round to be ready for these kinds of events
and it shows on days like this," the tweet reads
The last aircraft-related emergency at Chicago Executive occurred in February
when a small business jet slid off a runway during a snowstorm
• Daily Herald staff writer Jake Griffin contributed to this report
the controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vintu launched his personal blog at the end of 2014 and started posting short video messages on his own Facebook page
practically building his own community of fans from scratch
Vintu’s Facebook page has close to 125,000 followers and his blog posts constantly got over 1 million views
From the former head of a media empire that spanned TV, online and print media called Realitatea-Catavencu, Vintu ended being a vlogger that filmed himself while smoking in his own house. Sometimes, he made videos outside the house, while sitting in the garden or while he was driving a boat on a lake.
in the videos posted on Facebook and through the articles posted online
Vintu looked like a preacher who was telling his followers what to do
Most of Vintu’s comments online was related to the political games in the country and in a video he concluded that all the political parties are the same and “they have the same number and quality of crooks”
He also liked to talk a lot about the intelligence services and their involvement in media and politics
Although he was the mastermind of the financial pyramid scheme FNI, for which he got could to jail, Vintu had started a new business venture recently called “InvestMarket”. He wrote on this blog that this was a “simple way to connect more than 5,600 investors and a network of investors, offering a centralized network based on a verified platform, with a transparent investment portfolio.”
“It is preferable to have 1 percent of something that is palpable
instead of 100 percent of nothing,” wrote Vintu on the blog
He was also giving investment advices to his followers. For instance, he said that if a person had up to EUR 5,000 for investments, he or she should buy virtual coins.
he got out after having served a one year jail sentence for blackmailing the controversial businessman and politician Sebastian Ghita
in which he was accused of having favored Nicolae Popa
which also included National Investment Fund (FNI)
Popa is currently in jail for the collapse of the fund
which saw tens of thousands of Romanians that invested in FNI lose all their money
On Friday, Vintu received a sentence of 6 years and two months in the Petromservice file
He also got 6 years and four months of jail in the FNI case
The businessman was also jailed during the communist rule of Nicolae Ceausescu for dilapidation
He bragged on his blog about the time he spent in jail before 1989
The coming into force of the debt discharge law
and concerns about the future of the government-guaranteed mortgage lending program Prima Casa will force bankers and developers alike to become creative
Romanian real estate investor Ovidiu Sandor tells BR
The businessman is preparing to kick start a residential project of his own in Timisoara this autumn
“All that Prima Casa has been is a financing tool available to a wider audience than what had previously been offered
I think we all remember that back in 2005 or 2006 one could hardly get a conventional mortgage at all
They need to circulate money and there obviously are people whom banks can lend that money to,” he said
This means that banks and developers will look for ways to replace Prima Casa with similarly accessible tools
although the debt discharge law complicates matters
There has been a desire to take revenge on the banking system
but this is a misconstrued revenge as the target should have been the abusive clauses in some lending agreements
What is happening now is a fool’s revenge which will prevent the next generation of young people taking out a loan under simpler terms,” added the businessman
banks and developers will have to work together and come up with financing solutions to support the existing demand in the market
“I expect both banks and developers to be creative
This is also what I have set out as an objective for our residential project in Timisoara
We want to come up with our own financing solutions for our prospective buyers which we would negotiate with a bank,” said Sandor
Customized financial plans already exist on more developed markets and they can be a source of inspiration for local players as well
We only need to choose and introduce such tools and make sure the market understands them
The need for this is certainly there,” he commented
“My experience so far has to do with office developments
one must look at what the market’s needs are
What we have been seeing for over a year is an increased appetite for residential acquisitions
whether because of financial strains or a lot of reluctance
people preferred to wait and see,” he outlined
The first apartments can be bought off plan this autumn and the actual construction will start early next year
In early 2018 the developer plans to finish the first apartments as well as about 16,000 to 18,000 sqm of office space
While competition in the office segment has been tightening in recent years in the main regional cities
Sandor says the market has the capacity to absorb that
are sought after and Sandor plans to build on his experience in Cluj-Napoca where he is developing The Office
the Romanian entrepreneur is betting on a similar strategy
“We want to redefine what quality living means
I strongly believe that when it comes to a block of flats
this means much more than the quality of its fittings
The quality of life an apartment offers has to do with everything that surrounds it
from the natural setting to easy access to work
shopping and entertainment such as restaurants and culture venues,” he said
The residential project in Timisoara boasts a central location close to the city’s downtown
It is also located on the banks of the Bega river
which Sandor says he wants to make the most of
“We are targeting young professionals who are part of what I like to call the ‘creative class’
meaning they are working in industries that include IT
advertising or who are freelancers or entrepreneurs
They are young people who maybe don’t yet have a family and who want to enjoy everything city life has to offer,” he outlined
There is also interest coming from middle-aged potential buyers who may already own a property in the suburbs
but who want to relocate downtown due to the advantages city life offers
the project will feature several types of housing units that can accommodate various needs as well as budgets
Prices will start “in the range of Prima Casa”
“What we have set out to do is to start from the average market price
to which we will add a premium since it has an outstanding position and it will be an outstanding project
this will not be a high premium,” concluded the businessman
Controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vintu
has been sentenced on Tuesday by the Court of Appeal in Bucharest to eight years in prison for money laundry for the collapse of the ponzi scheme fund FNI
The judges approved the appeal of the General Court and increased the punishment of Vintu from six years and four months as the Bucharest High Court ruled in February 2015 to eight years of prison

it ruled the special confiscation from Vintu of the amounts of RON 13.74 million and USD 7.28 million equivalent in RON and BNR exchange rate
and the insurance distraint until obtaining these amounts
after receiving a jail sentence of six years and four months in another file regarding the bankruptcy of Petromservice
On September 24 2012, Vintu was prosecuted by the General Court near the High Court of Justice for money laundering and instigation to embezzlement in the National Investments Fund (FNI) file.
The file started from the researches of the legal institutions in the crime files regarding the National Investments Fund
Bank for Investments and Development and Romanian Bank Rate
The prosecutors say that as a result of the analysis of the crimes, part of which are finished by definitive law decisions, some convergence points have been established.
The General Court said that the analysis of these files emphasized that the crimes were judged in separate files
leading to “the passing by of some temporal aspects and their reasons.”
The evidences revealed that Vintu determined on purpose Nicolae Popa
president-general director of SC Gelsor SA and executive director SC SOV Invest SA
to embezzle for FNI RON 112.28 billion and RON 25.11 billion difference from the unreal time growth of unit fund
Th General Court showed that Vintu acted on purpose to use the amounts in his own interest
the evidence results from the temporal development of acts and from his actions
The amounts redempted from Popa’s investor card were used entirely by Vintu to acquire some properties
for cash withdrawal or current activities of the companies under his coordination
Despite being denied the chance to perform his Selectia Nationala winning song “Moment of Silence” in Stockholm this year
Ovidiu Anton still believes in it and has dropped the official video to prove it
And with the big reveal he is taking the opportunity to introduce his new rock band
the visuals are the sum of all things 80s rock
complete with inexplicably windswept white sheets
The only thing that’s missing is a white horse running wild in the fog
although that would be out of place in an attic
