Angie Pontani is ready to get back to the stage
The Trenton-native and Brooklyn-based neo-classical burlesque queen will be making her long-awaited return to the Garden State on Saturday
when her Burlesque-A-Pades troupe visits the intimate confines of the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick
the longtime producer and star of Bulesque-A-Pades
took a break from performing earlier this year when she and her husband
celebrated the September birth of their daughter
After making comeback appearances in New York City and Philadelphia this December
shows which she described as “like therapeutic medicine,” Pontani is coming back to the stagelights of her home state
being a new mom and the mom of such a little tiny baby
that make it difficult to find time in the day for anything else,” Pontani said
my husband and I spoke and we both agreed that this is really what I love to do and I want to continue to do it — obviously modified
but that just makes it that much more exciting to do these shows.”
Pontani said she and Newman work together so she can find the time to put in the necessary work for production
(“I’m spending a lot of time at home bedazzling and rhinestoning while the baby is sleeping,” she noted with a laugh.)
Pontai is returning to the world of burlesque refocused
“I want it to be bigger and more exciting.”
she is bringing in some heavy-hitters to deliver some serious shimmy and shake to the George Street Playhouse stage
Along with a handful of performers familiar to local audiences — the Maine Attraction
Calamity Chang and host Albert Cadabra — Pontani is enlisting the services of Dallas-based Missy Lisa and members of her Ruby Revue
including Ginger Valentine and Renee Holiday
While Burlesque-A-Pades’ regular New Jersey home was the now-closed Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park
for their New Brunswick appearance the troupe will be in the seating setting of George Street
it’s the same show and it’s the same kind of experience
and we really do get the same reaction,” Pontani said
when you’re in a bar or some place like the Lanes
but we really encourage that in the theater shows as well
so you’re still sitting in the theater and maybe you’re feeling like you’re having a more grown-up experience but the audience is still hooting and hollering and yelling and being an active and fun part of the show.”

Metrics details
Potential adverse drug event (PADE) is a medication error with the potential to cause associate degree injury however that does not cause any injury
or as a result of the error being intercepted and corrected
and preventability of PADEs among hospitalized adult patients at Jimma Medical Center
A prospective observational study was conducted among hospitalized adult patients at a tertiary hospital in Ethiopia
Logistic regression was performed to identify factors predicting PADE occurrence
P-value < 0.05 was considered for statistical significance
The mean ± SD age of the participants was 43 ± 17.6 years
Number of medications (adjusted OR = 5.12; 95% CI: 2.01–13.05; p = 0.001)
anticoagulants (adjusted OR = 2.51; 95% CI: 1.22–5.19; p = 0.013)
anti-seizures (adjusted OR = 21.96; 95% CI: 6.57–73.39; p < 0.0001)
anti-tuberculosis (adjusted OR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.002–4.59
and Elixhauser comorbidity Index ≤ 15 (adjusted OR = 6.24; 95% CI: 1.48–26.25
p = 0.013) were independent predictors of PADEs occurrence
About one-third of patients admitted to the hospital experienced PADEs
Hospitalized patients are more likely exposed to polypharmacy
Patients who have PADEs are likely to have a longer hospital stay
and an increased risk of morbidity and mortality
there is no prospective observational study that followed patients admitted in the ward to identity the incidence
this study aimed to determine the incidence
A prospective observational study was conducted among adult patients admitted to inpatient medical wards or units
PADEs during/before admission were not included in the calculated incidence
they have occurred as prescribing (ordering)
The training was given to data collectors on the data collection procedure and research objectives
data was checked and cleared in EpiData to exclude ambiguous
comorbidity (Charlson’s comorbidity index)
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 and Microsoft Excel (2010) were used for analysis
Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors of PADE occurrence
A p-value of < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant
The outcome of the study was reported as PADEs incidence per 100 admissions
and per 100 medication orders; severity of PADEs; the percentage of PADEs in stages of medication use (ordering/prescribing
“PADEs incidence per 100 admissions: The total number of PADEs identified
divided by the total number of admissions; multiplied by 100”
“PADEs incidence per 1000 patient-days: The total number of PADEs identified
divided by the total number of patient- days multiplied by 1,000”
“PADEs incidence per 100 medication orders: The total number of PADEs identified
divided by the sum of medications ordered multiplied by 100”
Ethical clearance & approval was obtained from the institutional review board (IRB) of Jimma University with the reference number of IHRPGD/550/19
It was based on the 1964 Helsinki declaration and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards
written informed consent was requested and received from the patient
Informed consent was obtained from all individual participants included in the study
Among the patients involved in the study, 171 (53.6%) had a previous medical condition. Diseases of the circulatory system 88 (51.46%), infectious and parasitic diseases 48 (28.07%), and endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases 25 (14.62%) were the common previous medical condition of the patients (Table 3)
Based on documented and available data, 166 (52%) patients had a history of medication use in the 3 months before the study period. One hundred eight patients were on medication during admission. Most of the patients were on cardiovascular medicines 79 (73.15%), antibiotics 28 (25.93%), and antiviral agents 28 (25.93%) (Table 5)
Severity of PADEs. Microsoft Excel (2010) https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/previous-versions/microsoft-excel-2010 was used to generate the figure
factors associated with PADEs were analgesics
ECI ≤ 15 and previous hospitalization in the past 3 months
and anticoagulants were independent predictors of PADEs
Area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) = 80.2% (95%CI: 74.9%- 85.4%) (Fig. 3).
Receiver operating characteristic curve for the PADE occurrence. The area under the curve was 0.802 (95% CI: 0.749–0.854). The straight diagonal line represents reference (no discriminative ability). IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24.0. Armonk, https://www.ibm.com/analytics/spss-statistics-software was used to generate the figure
Multivariate analysis indicated that the number of medications the patient was receiving
and anticoagulants were independent predictors of PADE occurrence
The ability of these variables to predict PADE occurrence was assessed using AUROC
which is 80.2% (95% CI: 74.9–85.4%); thus the model demonstrated excellent performance
The incidence of PADEs was 29.47 per 100 admissions
The most common stage of the medication use process at which PADEs occurred was at the prescribing stage
and anticoagulants were independent predictors of the occurrence of PADEs
The data sets generated during and/or analyzed during the current study are available from the corresponding authors on reasonable request

Padres reliever Alex Torres made MLB history
When he was summoned to replace Tyson Ross in the 8th inning against the Dodgers
Torres took the mound wearing an IsoBlox protective pitching hat
becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to do so
Ever since then-Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy was struck in the head with a line drive and suffered life-threatening brain injuries
Major League Baseball studied and tested multiple prototypes for padded caps in order to provide provide head protection against line-drives and comeback shots
In late January MLB informed all 30 teams that protective caps had been approved for use in games starting in 2014. Although Blue Jays pitcher Todd Redmond was seen earlier in the year sporting one of the caps in the dugout
Torres is the first player to wear one during a game
According to San Diego Union-Tribune writer Dennis Lin
a scare in spring training prompted Torres to order one of the caps
The internet was abuzz with jokes about the size and look of Torres cap
with comparisons made to Mario & Luigi
But should we really be joking about something that can help prevent serious brain injuries

“I bring a queer element to the show,” says Murray Hill
drag king host of the variety show Burlesque-A-Pades In Loveland
through my material but also by interacting with people in the audience.”
Hill was one of the first drag kings to gain visibility
Hill — who keeps his real identity a secret — transitioned from photographer and visual artist to drag entertainer
“I noticed there were all these drag queens everywhere
but few drag kings in New York at that point
and it wasn’t about comedy,” he says
“I wanted to bring that same camp sensibility that drag queens had into drag king performances.”
Though Hill’s resulting look and sensibility is chiefly inspired by lounge lizards from ’70s-era Las Vegas — “Mr
Showbiz” is his nickname — there’s also some undeniable familial influence at play
“I recently looked at some old pictures
and Murray looks a lot like my uncle and my grandfather,” Hill says
chubby Italian guys that like to joke around a lot.”
Though Hill has had cameos in cult films and on cable TV — including John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus
HBO’s Bored to Death and STARZ’s Gravity — his main work has been on stage
performing improv and emceeing touring shows for neo-burlesque stars
including Dita Von Teese and Angie Pontani
Hill is eager to rejoin Pontani and the “amazing burlesque dancers” in Burlesque-A-Pades
playing the “schmuck” in the Valentine’s Day variety show
It will also feature burlesque artists Maine Attraction
and musical duo Sunny Sighed & Bal’d Lightening
“The Birchmere is actually one of my favorite venues,” Hill says
noting that “the crowd is always up for it.” But it’s not just the crowd that gets him going: It’s Pontani herself
“She’s my showbiz partner in crime,” Hill says

There's a lot more to burlesque than some scantily-clad shimmy and shake
it's an art form built on a potent foundation of escapism and empowerment
as vital and necessary in 2019 as it was at any point in its centuries-long history
It's as much performance art as strip tease
tear-away gowns and pasties are still there — burlesque has never experienced a shortage of va-va-voom. But these days
a performer could be disrobing to reveal a body covered in political messaging
or transforming from an insecure prey into a being of provocative power
And artist and audience alike find a refreshing realness in that
"It’s a tense political climate that we live in
It’s a world that is sad and can be very depressing and very divided
and sometimes it's depressing," said Trenton native burlesque producer and performer Angie Pontani
it just kind of takes all of that away," Pontaini said. "And you’ll be in a room with so many different people — people who have different political views
people who lead completely different lives — and a good burlesque show has the power to bring all of those people together in that moment
And I think that that is just a beautiful thing.”
Tracing its origins to the Victorian era of the 19th Century
burlesque boomed as a bawdy form of entertainment on the American vaudeville circuit in the pre-World War II years
It began to see a contemporary resurgence starting in the 1990s via retro counter-culture shows such as Dutch Weismann's Follies in New York City
brings her Burlesque-A-Pades troupe to the House of Independents in Asbury Park on Friday
It marks the company's return to Asbury Park after years performing at the former incarnation of the Asbury Lanes, prior to that venue's closure in 2015. (It re-opened in 2018 under new management.)
ON STAGE: "Drag Race" winner Jinkx Monsoon unveils NYC dates
Pontani said the old Asbury Lanes served an essential function as a home base for the then-nascent New Jersey burlesque scene of a decade or so ago
"It was really one of our favorite places to play in all of the United States because everybody would have this party vibe and this great
great energy and was just so excited to be there," Pontani said of the Lanes. "And it was so rock 'n' roll and so punk
but also so sweet and loving at the same time."
"Burlesque has grown so much in terms of what falls under that umbrella," Pontani said
"that it’s almost just become a giant umbrella with all of these little sub-genres underneath
Take Attica Wilde of Middlesex, co-producer of the New Jersey Burlesque Festival
In her upcoming performance in Asbury Park with the NJ Burlesque Valentine's Show
she'll be delivering a routine that involves the disembowelment of a giant teddy bear
COMING SOON: Meet the Cherry Hill drag queen coming to VH1
“I don’t want to give too much away," Wilde said
Wilde's Asbury Park show boasts an eclectic cast of both male- and female-identifying performers specializing in a vast array of styles
from the industrial music ballerina MasoKiss to the vocal stylings of Melodie The Showgirl Songstress to Wilde's own protege
During nearly a decade of performing burlesque
Wilde saw her personal performance style evolve away from the neo-classical tradition to something more experimental and politically-charged
Comparisons come easily between modern American burlesque of Wilde's sort and the German pre-war Weimar cabaret scene of the 1920s
which combined stinging political satire with crowd-pleasing nightclub entertainment
“There was a lot more artsy stuff going on in Jersey (at the time)
it didn’t quite engage me the way that I wanted
and more recently I’ve embraced a lot of political (themes) in my act.”
she disrobes to reveal her body painted with words that have been used to demean and attack women
“I really want to make art for me and people like me," Wilde said. "Someone in the industry said
you make art for people paying you.’ Well
It just took one burlesque show six years ago to draw in Hattie Harlowe of Collingswood
who performs in and produces shows in Philadelphia
"It really made a big impact on my life and is now my biggest hobby," said Harlowe. "The two things that I do the most are spend time with my kids and do burlesque.”
Harlowe co-produces the Philadelphia-based Bi+ Visibility Burlesque
dedicated to staging variety shows in the city in June for LGBTQ Pride Month
Last month, on her 30th birthday, Harlowe event presented the quirky "Story and Thong" burlesque tribute to the hit podcast "The Adventure Zone."
being able to put on that show," Harlowe said
Harlowe is set to take the stage with Ginger Leigh and Violet Outburst at Royal Boucherie as part of the pre-Valentine's show Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder on Wednesday
amusing and weird," Harlowe said. "I don’t think of myself as a particularly sexy person
but I know that I am very cute and I can pull that off well. But my performances always have some kind of twist to them
so I kind of come at things from an odd angle.”
Like Harlowe's signature "wolf in sheep's clothing" number: The performer starts in an adorable sheep costume
and gradually transforms from a sheep uncomfortable in its own skin into the Big Bad Wolf
It's easy to see Harlowe using burlesque to deliver a message about steeping into one's own power
CALLING HER SHOT: Becky Lynch tells us she wants to headline WrestleMania
“It’s a transformational number," Harlowe said
but it’s cute and weird because I’m stripping as two animals.”
But Harlowe remains ever-cognizant of the reason why audiences are there
“It’s first and foremost entertainment," Harlowe said. "As a producer
I want to make sure no matter what we’re doing people are paying us to entertain them
and I want to make sure they have a great time
but depending on the kind of show that you can find it’s the kind of thing where you can see bodies that look just like yours or bodies that look totally different than yours
It’s the kind of thing where you can find a bunch of nerds who are paying tribute to something that you also love
whether it’s movies or comics or video games
the conversation has been about ‘Why is it empowering?’ And I think it’s empowering because as a woman you come in and you’re doing this sexy performance
but it’s also kind of fun and tongue-in-cheek," said Pontani. "But you’re dictating what sexy is
You’re deciding what you want to do and how you want to present it."
naked realness to the world of burlesque — and its male-identifying performer counterpart
boylesque — that resonates particularly loudly in our current cultural climate
"It’s kind of this eye-opening experience for the audience to realize that sexy is a state of mind
sexy is what you project when you’re on stage," said Pontani. "And I think that that’s a big sigh of relief to a lot of women in the world
because you know boylesque is huge right now
So it kind of defies these constraints that the media tries to force-feed you and even social media
It’s like everybody wants to look perfect all the time but guess what: perfect ain’t that fun.”

===== My Thursday theme for May is Face Cards from a playing deck ==========
>>>>>>This diary is about the Ace playing card
Words below from this Wiki: Ace
Another wiki: French-suited playing cards
An Ace is a playing card with a single pip
an Ace has a single suit symbol (a Heart, Diamond, Spade
or a Club) located in the middle of the card
especially in the case of the Ace of Spades
This embellishment on the Ace of Spades started when King James I of England required an insignia of the printing house to be printed on the Ace of Spades
Although this requirement was abolished in 1960
the tradition has been kept by many card makers
In other countries the stamp and embellishments are usually found on Ace cards; Clubs in France
the Ace had a low value and this still holds in many popular European games. Many games
allow the player to choose whether the Ace is used as a high or low card

Before such things became taboo, Camel cigarettes were advertised with the slogan, “I’d walk a mile for a Camel.”
At the Webster County Fair this week, visitors don’t have to go that far for an actual camel. They only have to walk from their vehicle to the east side of the 4-H Building.
The camels are among the entertainment options this year and are part of the Hot Diggity Dogs & More Show, which also features a nine year-old 700 pound pig named Shelton.
The entire performing menagerie is owned by Hans Klose and Colleen Pades, of Arcadia, Florida.
“I started with dogs, I got the dogs from my parents when they decided to retire, it was sort of the family business.” he said. “Then we got the pig. She brought her camels along. It adds to the show, it’s not just a regular dog show.”
Combining families and family pets is pretty common. Six camels — not so much.
They have a combined total of six camels. Two are Bactrian camels, which have two humps. Four are dromedary, which have a single hump. It’s an even split between males and females.
Klose said the animals have a diet similar to a horse or cattle. The humps contain fatty deposits, not water. The camels are also included in the performance and after the show, rides on the animals are available.
“A lot of people have never seen a camel, much less ridden one.” he said.
During the show, viewers can expect to see the dogs performing and one lucky volunteer gets to sing with Shelton the Pig.
“I hope they enjoy the dogs,” he said. “They can see how much love and respect we give to our performers.”
Nichol Kleespies, youth program coordinator with the Iowa State University Extension Service, had tried the camel ride Wednesday.
“They’re much smoother than an elephant.” she said.
If camels, dogs and pigs aren’t just the ticket, another show at the fair offers audience volunteers a chance to learn about firefighting.
The Fire Fighter Show is the work of Neal Snyder, of Port Charlotte, Florida. He spends about nine months of the year traveling with it.
The inspiration came from his brother who was a working firefighter. After a guest injured themselves at a fire station open house, effectively ending the event, Snyder thought it would make a good fair show.
“All the things we do at the show,” he said. “They used to do.”
He begins by “recruiting” a group of junior firefighters from the audience.
“They’re looking like our new generation of heroes.” he said.
He then puts them in child-sized turnout gear and helmets. Then gives them their first assignment – polishing his miniature fire truck.
“I built it,” he said. “It’s an electric car, I turned it into a pumper.”
The recruits get to put out a “fire” with a fire extinguisher, unroll a length of hose, attach a nozzle and then roll it back up in a timed race.
Their final fire academy lesson is getting to use the water cannon atop a very realistic miniature aerial bucket.
The water cannon does actually work and it does actually spray water. However, Snyder keeps it turned off out of concern for the audience members’ cell phones. When the three count gets to zero, instead of water, a streamer goes off, sending a long strip of paper flying towards the audience.
The show includes a pretty good sprinkling of fire safety: “In case of fire, don’t hide, get outside, look at your hands on the floor, look down where there’s no smoke.”
He said both children and parents enjoy the show.
“They learn,” he said. “They come back again till they get pulled from the audience.”
Snyder has been doing the Fire Fighter Show for about 16 years.
Prior to that, he worked with a different show.
“I did an alligator show for 14 years.” he said.
Yes, he still has all his limbs and fingers.
In addition to the Fire Fighter Show and the Hot Diggity Dogs & More Show, fair attendees can also experience the Cow Town Show, which educates about agriculture and features a chance to milk a cow. They can take a helicopter ride, enjoy the Larry Dunbar Magic Show, experience the Dragonfire Dancing Horses today at 1 and 5:45 p.m. and cruise the midway at the carnival.
