Qantas has announced a cabin upgrade programme for more than half of its Boeing 737-800s
as part of wider fleet renewal plans that will also see the return to service of the airline’s last pair of stored Airbus A380s
The airline says 42 of its fleet of 75 737s will undergo a cabin overhaul
which will see new seats in business and economy classes
as well as larger overhead storage compartments
Qantas will upgrade the cabins of more than half of its 737s
The 737s with refreshed cabins will enter service in 2027 and will be deployed across its domestic and short-haul networks
The announcement – made alongside the release of its half-year financial results – comes as the airline prepares to take delivery of its first A321XLR which will eventually replace the 737s
The first A321XLR (to be registered VH-OGA) will be delivered in June
two months later than previously disclosed
Qantas notes that the 42 737s picked for the cabin overhaul are “scheduled to leave the Qantas fleet towards the end” of its ongoing fleet renewal programme
“As we bring more new aircraft into our fleet
we are also making our existing aircraft look and feel like new,” adds Qantas chief Vanessa Hudson

Qantas also expects its last two stored A380s to return to service by end-2025
The first A350-1000 for ultra-long-haul Project Sunrise flights will enter final assembly in September this year and be delivered by the second half of 2026
Also set to kick off this year are economy cabin upgrades for 10 Qantas A330-200s
The upgrades will see the installation of new economy seats – the same as those to be used on Project Sunrise flights
Qantas Group improved its financial performance for the six months to 31 December 2024
reporting an 11% increase in underlying pre-tax profit to A$1.39 billion ($875 million)
This was on the back of a 9% rise in revenue to A$12.1 billion
Passenger volume across the two airline brands was up 8.8%

More than 270 patients have been able to have their surgery closer to home in the last year following the introduction of a robotic assisted surgery system to Lincolnshire’s hospitals
United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) invested more than £3.2 million into the service behind the state-of-the-art system
which was used with the first patients in February 2022
The introduction of this equipment to operating theatres at Lincoln County Hospital has meant that urology and colorectal cancer patients needing complex robotic surgery as part of their treatment have been able to stay in the county for their care
The robotic surgery system in an operating theatre at Lincoln County Hospital
Robotic assisted procedures are carried out by a surgeon sat at a special console connected to a robot which is designed to mimic the surgeon’s hand movements
enabling them to perform delicate procedures through the smallest of incisions
The robotic assisted procedures are less invasive
which reduces risks during surgery and post-operative complications
The average patient who has robotic surgery will be expected to go home earlier and have a faster recovery
Previously there was no such robotic system in Lincolnshire

we have offered robotic surgery to more than 270 patients
which exceeds our predictions for the first operational year
Patients with complex urological and colorectal conditions did not have to travel to other sites for their robotic procedures
our patients have been able to access their care in a more timely manner and closer to home
and the level of training of our surgeons and theatre staff
“In this year we managed to train our staff to superior standards
but also appoint and incorporate new surgeons
already experienced in minimally invasive surgery
have been able to transition from open and laparoscopic surgery to robotic surgery
we will have four urological and three colorectal robotically trained surgeons.”
Mr Alevizopoulos added: “Over the next year we hope to offer robotic procedures to a bigger group of patients by introducing more specialised procedures and increasing the scale of patients who will benefit from robotic surgery
“This is fantastic news for our patients and the NHS in Lincolnshire.”

Mr Periam was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2022 and had a robotic prostatectomy in December 2022
He explained: “A close relative was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 18 months ago and he had his prostate removed by robotic surgery
I had no symptoms but I was advised to get checked as soon as possible
“I visited my local GP and gave a blood sample and was found to have a high PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) level
I had an MRI scan and biopsy and was diagnosed in September
My surgery was scheduled in November and it happened in December
“The care I have received has been excellent
I stayed in hospital in Lincoln for one night after surgery and the after care has also been great
I also went to A&E with a concern and someone from Urology came to review me within the hour
It was really reassuring that my relative had undergone the same robotic surgery but the staff also explained everything to me.”
was able to return to work about six weeks after his surgery
Mr Periam added: “I would encourage others to get tested if they have symptoms or are identified as being at risk
I was symptom-free and had no idea until my relative had symptoms and got tested.”
