Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors Eternal anomalies in the inconstant business of music The Innocence Mission are that rare type of band able to faithfully occupy their own niche without ever coming close to feeling stale Each of their albums is like a world in miniature where even the smallest of tonal shifts is enough to create a sense of evolution and renewal When it hits perfectly it’s nothing short of a superpower – a modest one – amped up on demureness and poetic observation The sense of wonder inherent to Karen Peris’ luminous voice deserves much of the credit for that earthed as it is by dewy and spacious arrangements that bloom in unhurried and quietly elegant ways: Karen’s flowing piano chords meeting the exceptional guitar work of high school sweetheart turned husband Don and the sympathetic basslines of Mike Bitts a core member of the band since they formed in ‘86 is one of their most spectacularly beautiful deserving of mention in the same breath as the classic Befriended (2003) and reminiscent Arriving almost five years on from their last album See You Tomorrow which found them judiciously indulging in a slightly grander sound Midwinter Swimmers finds them mostly deviating back to the mean luxuriating in familiar sonic spaces made new with greater insight and deepened affection Birthed partly during the intense early years of the pandemic Peris says she was obliged to write the songs for Midwinter Swimmers in unusual places so as not to interrupt their Zoom classes: in the garage sitting cross-legged on the floor of her bedroom like she was a teenager again but it did make the experience of writing those songs memorable in a new way,” she says “Just being in a different physical space than usual was interesting.” 2024 marks 35 years since the release of their self-titled debut album – the first of two LPs to be produced by Larry Klein Joni Mitchell at the time – and 25 years since their fourth and perhaps best-known album Birds of My Neighborhood which is where Peris picks up when asked to choose the five songs she’s most proud of Listen any earlier than that and she starts to get a little self-conscious about the naivety of the songs “I’m really touched and grateful if people have felt a connection with those earlier songs but I do wish that I’d been able to write better at the time,” she says softly I was barely out of my teens when I wrote a lot of that The Innocence Mission first hit their stride with 1995’s third album Glow, with the soaring single “Bright As Yellow” bringing them as close to a mainstream moment as the band have ever come but it was their shift to home recording for Birds of My Neighborhood that came to define the trio’s unmistakably intimate sound but for whatever reason I have felt closer to our songs since then,” says Peris While "Bright As Yellow" didn't make Peris' cut here the five songs that did are all important milestones in her journey as a songwriter each one digging into the marrow of important themes of community and friendship making the minor feel major and charged with meaning KAREN PERIS: I think this was the first song that I wrote for the Birds of My Neighborhood album and the last part of that tour was going around Canada opening for Emmylou Harris I had read that there are so many beautiful lakes in Canada but we didn’t get to see any of them because we always had to keep moving on to the next place So I was imagining these lakes and seeing them in my mind’s eye and that’s why I ended up writing them into the landscape of this song I felt like the song took on a sort of lakeside atmosphere feeling like I was surrounded by woods and the glimmering water to feel like those people are singing with me We really loved getting to hear her singing every night The big thing on my mind during that time was that I was longing to be transformed into the mother of a child we were already years into our sadness about not having been able to have children That longing is more implicit in some of the other songs on Birds of My Neighborhood than in “The Lakes of Canada” but I guess that’s a part of it when I am singing about change I’d say it’s more about wanting to be better at talking and communicating and the line “I feel that I could change” probably has more in common with other songs that explore that idea including songs from Midwinter Swimmers – like “A Different Day” “Orange of the Westering Sun” and even underlying the buoyancy of the song “John Williams” – which have more to do with ideas of trusting of striving against fearfulness and not letting anxiety get in the way of acting on good intentions Songs about not being afraid of conversation I don’t want to impose too much on this song the longing for children but I can say that the word “change” has itself changed so much for me over the years When our kids finally were able to be born and then they started to get to school age I just wanted for everything to stay the same and to be able to hold the present moment and I find it interesting how some words can change so much in their meaning I never want to disagree with how someone else hears a song because I feel like the listener is a really important part of any song and that how someone completes it in their mind is the right way for it to be for them I would add that the image in the song of feeling a sudden joy at spotting a fish moving through the water is very real to me and I think it must be common to many people to perceive the gift of a sudden stronger-than-usual joy that is momentary but sustaining and helpful I don’t remember exactly what transpired to allow me to put those parts together I think there were 5 years between Glow and when Birds of My Neighborhood finally came out… and then our son was born in ‘98 so that was a pretty big deal and brought a lot of changes I definitely remember recording “The Lakes of Canada” up in our attic with a small studio setup before Don and my dad built a studio space downstairs in the basement of our house I think that being able to work on music at home was really good for us and really gave us a sense of exploration in what we were doing It was such a gift just to be able to take our time and try to get things sounding in a way that seemed right Being able to just sing by myself in a room with no one else around I think probably led to a more personal kind of singing so even in her death it was natural to think of her as being like a beacon like the image in the song of someone waving around lights on an airport runway signalling a place to land she worked in a hospice and in people’s homes caring for them and talking with their families She always talked to me how it was such a privilege for her to be with people in the last weeks of their lives and that she’d get a real sense of someone crossing a threshold when they were passing away She’d talk about there being such a peace about them so all of that was helpful to me in my being without her There was a comfort in thinking about all of that and that’s where this song comes from and why it’s an important one for me I can’t remember if it was a year or two years after she died that I wrote the song but I think any time that I could think about her and talk about her was comforting I should say that those particular words from that song are actually borrowed from the author E.M either from an essay he wrote or a talk that he gave where he said I do not want my voice to go out into the air.” If you look at the lyrics in a physical copy of the record that part should be in quotation marks and his name in the credits I felt like I understood what he was saying so it feels good to keep writing about her She and my dad really enjoyed travelling there We were in London one time for work and tried to walk around as much as possible because it was just so beautiful As a family I think we all have loved Maine so much which is at the very top of the northeast of our country We’ve had some really memorable trips up there together which I also think is a very beautiful city The Boston Public Library is really amazing The artist John Singer Sargent painted all these murals on the walls there and then when you go into the huge children’s book room everything is decorated with paintings of Curious George because I think the creators Margret and H.A Rey were from Massachusetts or had some other connection with Boston We haven’t travelled a great deal other than touring but it's been such a privilege to get to travel around the country and meet a lot of wonderful people and to get to experience a real sense of community through music That’s one of the most affecting things we’ve ever experienced and we are so I just have to figure out how to be able to do it again but that’s really different from singing in a concert I’ve taken a really long break from touring to be able to stay home with our kids and I didn’t realise that being able to sing for a long time was something that I probably needed to stay in practice about in order to have the kind of rhythm of breathing that goes along with that Maybe if we’re able to start with shorter shows It’s something we’re working on and still trying to figure out I do miss the community of the mind people we met KAREN PERIS: I knew I wanted to choose a song from this album and “The Brothers Williams Said” is one that do feel really close to I actually started writing it about 10 years before that but I could never get further with the lyrics than the first few lines or so and then something – I don’t remember what – prompted me to start playing it on piano instead and that opened up something in the song for me and then the rest of it unfolded pretty quickly I was glad when the words were able to resolve in a hopeful way Before that I didn’t have those parts like “See you tomorrow / Maybe tomorrow I’ll see you tomorrow,” and I think there’s a suggested hopefulness to those lines about there being a better understanding between people in the situation that the song is describing I felt like the piano chords left a lot of space around the melody and the words and that seemed to make sense to me because the song itself is about quietness It’s about the experience of shyness and of introversion that so many people have and it’s especially about the concern that shyness can be misunderstood for unfriendliness Even if maybe half the world would maybe consider themselves to be introverted I think there can still be this misperception that shyness is the opposite of friendliness to be talking about that misperception in this song People who have a quiet nature might feel very warmly towards other people they just maybe take a longer time before having the courage to express it or maybe their voices are sometimes drowned out by the noise around them We actually recorded this song – at the least the piano and the timpani parts – in the band room of our old high school which is the same room where I first met Don all those years ago It was so nice to be able to play their grand piano because I just have a smaller upright piano at home and this song just seemed to want to have a deeper and richer sound which I think really adding something lovely to the song I’m really glad that you could feel that because that’s kind of what I was hoping that the song could convey I bet it can be hard to be in your situation but I am sure that your kindness really comes through to the people around you So much can be conveyed just through a person’s face and that’s what I was hoping to say in this song as well I don’t really have a good answer as to why I don’t even really know many people named William I think it’s more about the sound of the word and the feeling of it when it becomes joined together with a melody but it’s a nice thing that just keeps happening KAREN PERIS: I wasn’t sure which song to pick from A Song is Way Above the Lawn so I just picked the first song that I wrote for it because I think all the other songs that followed really did come out of this one This song showed me that I seemed to want to be writing from the perspective of childhood and that’s such a vast expanse to be travelling because there’s an endless amount of wonder that’s felt in everyday moments and in the life of the imagination Even the thought of entering a library can feel like entering a world of doorways to other places and especially the friendships found in books I think I needed to give myself permission to keep working on songs from these countries of childhood maybe because I was worried that it would seem strange to someone else I felt like calling it a children’s album would maybe make sense of it to other people but in the end it was received as just a regular album that anyone could enjoy People didn’t seem to think it was strange I liked that it could be a way to extend the childhood of our own children and even for me to be in conversation with my childhood self which I think it probably always a good thing We had a set of World Book encyclopedias that one of my brothers had won in a contest and a set of child craft encyclopedias that went along with that I remember there were some really interesting stories and poems in those and some of the story fragments had been illustrated by Maurice Sendak [author of Where the Wild Things Are] We didn’t have many books other than those but my parents would often take us to the library I would take the bus downtown after activities were done and just sit there doing my homework until my dad was done with his work He worked just down the street from the library and we’d ride the bus home together we would go to the library downtown every week – the same library – and it looked identical to the way it did when I was little All those hours spent reading with my kids… I will probably always think of that as the highlight of my life I loved that we could feel like we were on all these adventures together and still be completely safe at the library or at home They really liked to be read to up until they were in middle school and we still read together sometimes just because we enjoy it Partly I was just thinking of all these big lion statues that are outside of some of our really stately libraries like the New York City Public Library and the Boston Public Library and I liked the feeling of these lions being really gentle characters like someone you could talk to as a friend in childhood I wanted to convey that finding a sense of friendship because of the characters we might meet there and feel something kindred with The world of the imagination is extended in all directions to encompass the people and the landscapes you meet in books I like the mystery of how even the weather in a book or a poem can override the actual weather where you are Jane Eyre is a vivid example of that for me It’s also a lessening of loneliness to feel some kind of understanding with an author or an extended idea of friendship with other people who have liked the same book there would be a card in a pocket in the back of every library book where you would sign your name and the librarian would stamp the date You could see the names of all the people who had read the same book which in itself could feel like a sort of community The other part of my answer is that our kids just always loved animals Our son is really allergic to dogs and cats but the kids liked any story or picture book that had to do with animals We were drawing animals together all the time So that’s really why I put them in these songs because I liked the idea of the songs extending our memories of all those animal stories we’d read together KAREN PERIS: I think I choose it mostly because it was a real comfort to work on because I was missing our kids so much when they were away at university It’s a song about how love can transcend distance I was trying to map out pictures of connectedness and thinking about all these different kinds of lines that run through the world and even my wonky way of mending a green cardigan that I was trying to do at the time and I was trying to criss-cross them all with some green thread It kind of looked like a street map when it was finished I remember thinking about how all these different kinds of lines are really just visible and audible signals of our deeper connections with each other and I’m often walking the same blocks that I walked with our kids when they were little so it can feel sometimes like the landscape is full of doorways to those memories and like doorways to possibility and just the joy of being alive I also think that the way a certain kind of weather looks can be a portal in the mind’s eye I guess I just went down all these different side streets of thoughts and they all sort of merged together in this song which is trying to get at something having to do with crossing over the distance to someone that I really missed maybe I am kind of a broken record about that [laughs] But I have always loved the idea of doorways in landscapes and other places I loved finding trees that looked like they could have doors in them trees with knots in the bark that seemed like they could open I’d imagine different animals visiting each other in the trees and a whole storybook world would appear I still like the idea of these portals but that’s taken on a different kind of meaning I think of them now in regards to memories and ways to hold on to these really dear people that I’m missing in that there can be a lot of trying of different ways and at different times to find the sound that it seems like a song wants to have We’re always searching for the right ingredients for a song to be able to have an atmosphere that one could enter into It took us a little while to arrive at the right version of “This Thread is a Green Street” The song seemed to want to have a little bit more of singing in unison than we’ve tried before so I tried singing to my own voice a couple of times It gave the song an atmosphere that seemed to fit what we’d been thinking of so we just kept going forward with that until it was done When I listen to other people’s music and when I think about all the different albums I hold in my head of things that I’ve loved it can feel really mysterious how someone has arrived at the sounds that they’ve used it’s really a case of just trying to go forward and to listen and pay attention to what might be affecting us as we’re recording because often that can be the right thing to go with but I found that one in an anthology and I really loved it right away It’s so striking that I feel like I was responding just to that one line – is it a street or years – on a couple of the songs from the new album [like “The Camera Divides the State of Maine”] and all that question was communicating to me Midwinter Swimmers is supportive housing executive director of the PERIS Foundation the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness participates in a nationwide Point-in-Time count of people experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness The 2024 report published in October found that in Minnesota “9,182 persons were counted overall a 9.4% increase from the previous year.” The report further noted that the number of people in families experiencing homelessness increased by 41% over two years and that racial disparities in homelessness persist While a 9.4% increase in Minnesota is problematic, it is approximately half the national increase of 18.1% the count quantifies a visible and felt tragedy unfolding for Minnesotans across our state that compels response and demands that we ask hard questions and move toward action What would it take to solve homelessness in Minnesota  To create humane solutions to encampments  To provide effective and comprehensive housing support to Minnesotans who need it most To lead on effective solutions that could impact homelessness nationwide These questions came into sharp focus for me three years ago when I took on the executive director role at a start-up housing non-profit called the PERIS Foundation PERIS is dedicated to creating effective housing models for youth aging out of foster care I see first hand the obstacles to housing stability young people encounter and I navigate the challenges of creating responsive and sufficient solutions to those obstacles everyday I’ve participated in a coalition of Minnesota housing providers—developers and funders—that have met to discuss a mounting sense of desperation in the sector and the need for an effective response I also participate in a sub-coalition of supportive housing providers focused specifically on issues impacting permanent supportive housing and the tenants it serves It’s worth pausing here to briefly define affordable housing and supportive housing. Affordable housing is meant to serve those with incomes below the area median income, by providing homes with below market rents. Supportive housing provides access in the form of case management, healthcare, or substance use support. Supportive housing pairs deeply affordable minimal barrier housing with support services and has proven to be one of the most effective interventions to homelessness I’ve listened as providers articulate challenges like staffing shortages high acuity in tenant mental health and addiction Housing providers across Minnesota are facing strapped operating budgets and insufficient reserves that threaten the existence of essential affordable homes in Minnesota The coalitions have worked together to propose legislative and policy solutions to these sector-wide  challenges We’ve noted the need to evaluate and evolve longstanding underwriting assumptions to address current societal pain points and financial demands Solutions have focused on recapitalization with expanded uses to include preservation of existing buildings and services funding Yet even while the housing sector fights to preserve essential homes the 2024 homelessness count demonstrates an increase in people falling through gaps in our housing system While the steps we’re taking to preserve current housing and develop new housing are essential we must also move to address gaps in our system and continuum The report begins to illuminate these gaps stating,“unsheltered homelessness grew more than  sheltered homelessness across the state.” “This data suggests this population may not be adequately served by shelter, raising an urgent concern about how the State and local jurisdictional partners can support their housing and service needs,” according to the Interagency Council on Homelessness These compounding conditions have led to cities that are less safe not only for the homeless community identified through the Point-in-Time count Residential owners and tenants and local business communities also bear the harsh brunt of unsheltered homelessness and are seeking relief through new policies or actions We need effective and compassionate solutions for all Minnesotans and providers over hours of meetings and collaborative conversations I’ve begun to wonder if a primary point of both potential impact and strain on the system can be found in the current permanent support housing model through which we hope to house Minnesotans who face the highest obstacles to housing stability Permanent support housing is a highly effective tool to create stability and address homelessness but it is often underfunded and inadequately staffed which creates a gap in our housing continuum It is that gap into which people facing homelessness often fall, sometimes refusing shelter beds and transitional housing for the sake of community – in whatever form they have built it on the streets – despite evidence that shows that  “people who are unsheltered are more likely to be exposed to violence and trauma and to be engaged more often by police and emergency services than persons who are in shelter.” Hennepin County’s Single Room Occupancy housing strategy, Minnesota Department of Human Services Housing Stabilization Services and other efforts have sought to address that gap but a coordinated and systemic approach is needed Finland began a nationally coordinated shift in 2008 from a shelter system to a robust permanent supportive housing first approach to homelessness becoming globally known as a leader in solving long-term homelessness I became curious about their model because it addresses the very niche of the housing continuum to which we’re seeking solutions Through the PERIS Foundation, I have begun a conversation with the Y Foundation the largest non-profit housing provider and landlord in Finland and a key partner in that successful transition They are committed to connecting visitors with local sector professionals to share strategies and learnings and are excited to welcome a delegation from Minnesota Minnesota has long led the nation in housing solutions Hennepin County’s Continuum of Care and Heading Home Hennepin investments in the Adult Representation Services department are held up as examples nationally for their outreach work and efforts to fund permanent supportive housing This same innovative thinking has been activated by the current escalation of need and has led housing leaders to wonder if a rethinking of the systemic fragility of current permanent supportive housing and shelter models will have the most significant impact on stabilizing the housing sector as a whole and creating homes for all Minnesotans a small group of Minnesota housing professionals and I are travelling to Helsinki We hope to forge strong relationships with inspirational organizations like the Y Foundation uncover new methods and strategies for developing more sustainable permanent supportive housing models and generally inspire new thinking about housing solutions for the most vulnerable Minnesotans so that our approach to affordable and permanent supportive housing and shelter can evolve to meet the moment Our initial delegation will be actively learning and sharing what we learn both in articles here and in a final report with the hope of inspiring new thinking and an enthusiasm for a larger more representative delegation to return to Finland Not only to strengthen our collective understanding of what it would take to really solve homelessness in Minneapolis but also to fuel our optimism for the future and He remained alive and obliviously living his life in The City until the second book Tally and Peris found common ground and worked together again despite being her childhood best friend and a motivator for Tally to get her surgery and move into the City His character only becomes significant in the second and third books Movie: This is the largest deviation from the source material The creators wrote a more important role for Peris in the film where he’s put through additional surgery to become a ‘Special’ which supposedly severed all emotional attachment to Tully As a Special being used to hunt down Tally Peris’ character had a reason to be in the first film and his character in any potential sequels will have to be completely changed The surgery is the plot device that changed the trajectory of his character entirely and ultimately led to his (supposed) death Book: Peris had nothing to do with The Smoke and its inhabitants in the book and he had even less to do with David’s father Peris’ empathy levels were completely dulled and he snapped Az’s neck in front of Tally and the others Book: In the book series Peris and Tally are childhood friends with Peris turning 16 just two months before Tally The besties share a matching scar on their hands which they promise to keep through their surgery to become ‘Pretty’ Readers don’t even meet Peris until Tally sneaks into 'The City' to meet him and he’s not like she remembers Peris' entire personality changed and he didn’t keep his scar like promised This symbolised that he had completely let go of his past life he helped Tally get out of the City without getting caught so she wouldn't jeopardise her upcoming surgery the creators introduced us to Peris earlier so we could see his friendship with Tally We met him before his surgery and the film heavily implied that there were romantic feelings between the two When Tally snuck into the City to visit him as she’s tried to avoid getting caught whilst she left Peris didn't lift a finger to help her has heavily implied that Peris did not die after his fall In an interview as reported by ScreenRant, the director said: "Then he falls to — I’m not going to say it was his death I want [viewers to wonder] is he or isn’t he alive in there So we’re going to go out on a limb and say that Peris with all his enhanced abilities from his ‘Special’ surgery managed to survive the fall But with the huge changes made to his character it looks like if any future films are made they will deviate further from the books than Uglies did McG also explained the point of Peris' character arc and why he was made a Special in the film adaptation: "The whole point of that is I love this romantic idea of how hard the system tries to change him His will and his love for Tally is so powerful that it transcends surgery "I’m just romantic in that way that I want love to win in the end Peris can’t even bring himself to speak to Tally until he’s hanging off the edge of the building and he calls her by her nickname Love Island Rihanna One Direction News Dua Lipa See more Featured Artists The fourth RIBA International Prize has been awarded to the Modulus Matrix: 85 Social Housing complex in Cornellà The design arranges five to six modules worth approximately 139 square feet apiece into 85 homes inspired by Japanese design with 18 on each floor Circulation cores are placed in each corner of the structure for easier access to the building and units receive an ample amount of sunlight and are easily cross-ventilated This "loose fit architecture" (as RIBA's president Muyiwa Oki calls it) is the key that helps the project stand out over more conventional forms of housing Setting its grid-like layout around a central courtyard facilitates easy movement and social exchange creating in the end "a democratic house" that is sensitive to multigenerational households and other dynamics thought of by architect Marta Peris during her research into the films of Yasujirō Ozu Barcelona’s Metropolitan Institute of Land Development and Property Management (IMPSOL) was the client, expanding on its critically well-received housing development model that has produced over 5,000 homes to date in the region The project was completed in 2021 and stands as Spain’s largest timber frame structure Peris was joined by her fellow co-founder Jose Toral in saying: "We are very proud of the positive feedback from residents of Modulus Matrix Some were unsure about features like entering through a terrace having an open kitchen at the centre of the home but their perspectives changed after living in the space Now they feel this way of living better adapts to their needs Their first-hand experiences provide valuable insights into how housing around the world can evolve." commented finally: "Through this innovative approach to social housing Peris + Toral Arquitectes has responded to the shifting demands of societal groupings by crafting a housing project that is adaptive Not defined by stereotypes or fixed assumptions of what constitutes 'family' the intelligent organization of space encourages lively interaction and connection within the community ensuring that the architecture functions on different scales – from the discrete dwelling to the collective space This building has set a precedent for future developments in Barcelona and beyond." Architecture Zhang Yuxing + Han Jing, ARCity Office explained the inspiration from the fusion of the modernist plan and spontaneous growth in the existing urban village. 'This fusion gives rise to a “contradictory unity” composed of various elements such as old and new, heritage and life, poverty and prosperity, ruins and construction, wilderness and artificiality, everyday life and monumentality.  'In this project, we strive to demonstrate that this “contradictory unity,” actively designed by architects, not only creates delightful mixed-use spaces and civic public realm but also possesses the greatest potential for sustainable growth from the very beginning. Perhaps this represents a new paradigm for future cities and architecture - what we call “Bricolage Architecture”.'  Latest articlesRIBAJ Spec: Architecture for Housing and Residential Development Webinar20 May 2025SpecRIBAJ Spec: Architecture for Housing and Residential Development Webinar Chelsea Waterfront integrates public realm and affordable housing to hold out the possibility of an inclusive future Baillie Baillie Architects used contemporary techniques while drawing inspiration from local traditions Sign up to receive regular briefings, updates and our weekly newsletter – all designed to bring you the best stories from RIBAJ.com Sign up to receive regular briefings, updates and our weekly newsletter – all designed to bring you the best stories from RIBAJ.com updates and our weekly newsletter – all designed to bring you the best stories from RIBAJ.com 85 social housing units in Cornellá de Llobregat, by Peris+Toral The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named 85 Social Housing in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona) an 85-unit timber-framed social housing development designed by Peris + Toral Arquitectes as the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024 Lu Wenyu said: “Through this innovative approach to social housing Not defined by stereotypes or fixed assumptions of what constitutes ‘family’ ensuring that the architecture functions on different scales – from the discrete dwelling to the collective space This building has set a precedent for future developments in Barcelona and beyond and is a worthy winner of the RIBA International Prize 2024.” The units of a five-story apartment block in Cornellà form a matrix that ensures maximum use of floor area as well as an optimal bay for the structure made of zero-kilometer timber The construction is organized around a courtyard at whose four corners the vertical circulation cores are located and out to which the private terraces giving access to the dwellings look All the home units are composed of square-shaped modules with undifferentiated sizes and uses arranged enfilade by means of large openings that omit corridors and let users enjoy double orientations Book: Housing, 50 Works in Spain Arquitectura Viva 263: Peris + Toral AV Monografías 243-244: España 2022 RIBA has also announced the winner of the International Emerging Architect Award 2024 ARCity has been named the winner for their project Six Bricolage Houses The award is given in recognition of those making a significant contribution to the field of architecture who have been practicing for 10 years or less is a curated series of six self-built homes built as a pioneering and innovative model for urban renewal in order to meet community needs for housing whilst integrating sensitively with the ancient streets of the historic heart of the city Six Bricolage Houses in Shenzhen by ARCity Office there arent any match using your search terms the husband-and-wife duo and original bassist Mike Bitts are approaching the end of middle age on Midwinter Swimmers a sharp contrast to the jaded stances permeating modern life “In five o’ clock raindrops/You stop to take a picture/Of you and me,” she sings in “Cloud to Cloud.” “We’re carrying guitars and flowers/Everything is light.” Illustrating the tender moment in full color Don leans heavier into his drumkit and electric guitar while Karen answers with melodica Much like the way Sufjan Stevens’ most prevailing love songs double as hymns the Innocence Mission have consistently turned to Catholicism to better understand the world and their place within it “Oh I’m grateful for you/And oh I am afraid/of many things I should not fear if I believe,” Peris sings on “Orange of the Westering Sun.” Over plodding piano in “We Would Meet in Center City,” she coos on any wave?” It’s an emotionally walloping chorus and she answers those questions with a wordless Midwinter Swimmers doles out discreet edification; Peris is no preacher or proselytizer She’s instead like a solicitous follower who does her part by keeping the sacristy tidy or straightening bibles in hymnal racks: creating a welcoming space for those seeking comfort However, it might not be as “right” as Netflix and fans would have hoped, considering the film sports a mere 14 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Where did Netflix go wrong? Was it the classic struggle to stay faithful to its source material—or something else entirely While there’s no definitive answer to the latter question Below is a breakdown of the most significant differences and similarities between Netflix’s adaptation and Westerfeld’s beloved book One of the film’s most fundamental changes involves Peris (Chase Stokes) He is one of the most integral characters in Uglies the character is nowhere to be found after chapter 15 of 50—but because he is one of the driving factors behind every decision that protagonist Tally (Joey King) makes but even as a “Pretty”—the term for adolescents who have received cosmetic surgery to become “pretty” when they turn 16 as opposed to “Uglies,” who still haven’t undergone this society’s coming-of-age procedure—he is still kind whenever he does appear Book Peris isn’t entirely dismissive of his and Tally’s friendship; instead he begs Tally to not jeopardize their future friendship as Pretties by doing anything ill-advised “In three months,” when Tally is scheduled to have the operation that will make her a Pretty Peris’ matching best-friend scar he has with Tally was removed looking down on Tally when she ambushes him at the party When she brings up their promise to remain “best friends forever,” he responds: “Maybe we will be … in two months?” His snide remarks continue with another small change: His matching best-friend scar with Tally is removed involuntarily in the book he realized he “just didn’t really want it anymore.” The film adaptation’s decision to make Peris more callous lays the groundwork for what may be the biggest change between the two versions: While Book Peris is absent for most of the book but he becomes a “Special”—a modified superhuman version of a Pretty that essentially acts as an indestructible weapon—and is mentally programmed to attack Tally and the “Smokies,” the community of city defectors who refused the surgery and left to live off the lush land far beyond the city borders (called the Smoke) Peris plummets off a very precarious ledge but Specials are known to be somewhat indestructible so it’s likely he survives and might come back for a potential sequel One of the better changes the movie makes involves the character Shay (Brianne Tju) Tally’s mischief-loving best friend who convinces her to join the Smoke Their humble beginnings are mostly the same in both versions—they have fun breaking the rules but there’s a subtext of deep angst while Shay struggles to explain to Pretty-pilled Tally that she doesn’t want the operation The change comes when the story moves to the Smoke Tally forms a romance with David (Keith Powers) Shay also harbors feelings for David and resents Tally for capturing his attention and his heart This is a starting factor in Shay’s eventual distrust of Tally culminating in the former bestie convincing herself that Tally had betrayed them of course.) But it also leaves Book Shay uttering some fairly ridiculous lines during moments of peril You had to betray the whole Smoke!” (Let the record show that David hadn’t returned Shay’s feelings in any real There was no “boyfriend” to “steal”!) Having Shay become so uncharacteristically petty over a boy What matters more to this Shay than what Tally chooses to do with David is rather for Tally to simply make a definitive choice: stay with the Smoke Shay trusts Tally until the protagonist’s dirty little secret is revealed childish love triangle enhances the greater story There’s more apocalypse-level drama to worry about SpagBol—the phrase known far and wide by Westerfeld fans Cable (Laverne Cox) gives Tally as rations for her journey to spy on the Smoke Tally is disappointed to find that every food pouch she was sent away with (two weeks’ worth) is all the same: SpagBol for breakfast But the packets become an important element in the story trading and bartering is an important foundation of their economy and dehydrated food—which is hard to come by out in the wilderness—is highly valuable Tally realizes that the timeline of her trek to find the hidden society in the wilds doesn’t make sense—that Cable into starting her traitorous journey a Smokie who remains skeptical of Tally’s intentions and the timing of her arrival notices she has a lot of pasta left for someone who was out in the elements for as long as she claims to have been So there you have it: SpagBol isn’t just a fun word to say—and one that appears in the book 34 times if I’m counting my e-book search results correctly—it actually plays a role in the plot it shows up with a quick cameo during a montage of Tally’s hellish journey braving the elements to find the Smoke world-building on screen is never going to match up to world-building on the page the adaptation of Uglies cuts a lot of interesting bits out One omission is the book character called “The Boss,” who is in charge of the library but a great link to showing readers how our actual society compares to this fictional dystopian one He provides the characters with access to resources like magazines through which Shay and Tally realize that being pretty used to be a job one that came along with eating disorders and more the film’s other big change from the source material is the climax in which Tally’s secret is revealed they’re detained together for a little while It isn’t until David and Tally set out to rescue the others that they find out that David’s father died due to some unsafe tests that were forcibly run on him even after being stranded together during a hurricane on their way to free the Smokies that Tally tells David the truth about her initial traitorous intentions for joining the Smoke It’s how she gets him to agree to let her be the test subject for the cure by letting herself get captured to undergo the Pretty operation she rounds everyone up to watch—like spectators at a 1600s Salem witch trial—as she orders Special Peris to murder David’s father The entire community then learns of Tally’s deception Then Tally and David’s rescue mission happens—and Tally’s willingness to help the Smokies gets her back in their good graces When it comes to the entire crux of the film—revealing that the Pretty operation also alters people’s brains silly little fools—the movie is fairly faithful the movie details that there are lesions in the brain that dull your thoughts and emotions and sedate you “into a false sense of happiness.” In this real-world era of people rendering themselves nearly unrecognizable via cosmetic surgery it shouldn’t be hard to recreate the book’s notion of changing people’s faces to the point where they don’t look like themselves Joey King just looks like a blonde version of herself with a face filter on and Chase Stokes just looks like a yassified version of himself though Uglies are supposed to be average people I wouldn’t say that Keith Powers is of average looks The uncanny-valley nature of a world in which everyone receives cosmetic surgery to look the same isn’t brought to the screen It doesn’t feel eerie enough—maybe more CGI was needed Both versions portray Tally’s final decision to undergo the Pretty operation so she can be the first to try the cure The book ends with the line “I’m Tally Youngblood Make me pretty.” We don’t get to see the reveal or what comes after The movie goes further in signaling that even though Tally underwent the operation but we’re also privy to the knowledge that she chose to keep her scar It’s an understandable change for a movie that needs to relay this information from a fairly introspective book even if the whole “choosing to keep an imperfection in a society that forces everyone to rid themselves of imperfections” thing doesn’t make the most sense add depth and authenticity to the storytelling becoming an essential element in bringing this epic universe to life The Wheel of Time Season 3 is available on Prime Video starting March 13 McG tells TheWrap that author Scott Westerfeld was incredibly supportive while crafting the Netflix sci-fi film Warning: This article contains spoilers for “Uglies” there are almost inevitably going to be changes; sometimes they’re major he “felt very safe” in all his decisions because author Scott Westerfeld understood why they were being made “You always want to be very respectful of something that precedes the filmic expression,” McG told TheWrap when there’s a book and there are a great many fans you want to do right by the fans because you have to make sure they’re satisfied first and foremost — and then obviously you want to take it far beyond the book fan base — but the first thing you got to do is secure everybody that put this thing on the map and made it the success that it is today.” Now streaming on Netflix, “Uglies” is based on Westerfeld’s 2005 book of the same name It tells the story of a dystopian society where people are divided into two castes: The Uglies and The Pretties every resident undergoes plastic surgery to become a Pretty they live in a compound across the bridge and are largely ignored At the center of the story is Tally Youngblood (Joey King) an almost-16-year-old who desperately wants to receive her surgery Cable (Laverne Cox) and Special Circumstances track down and infiltrate a group known as The Smoke; they live off the grid and choose to age naturally ‘Wild’ sort of self discovery journey The film just couldn’t tolerate that much time spent on that journey,” he explained to TheWrap “You have to service the other characters as this character is picking herself up from her bootstraps discovering the natural world and seeing that there’s so much more out there in the screens was tricky!” many of the big changes came with Chase Stokes’ character Peris is Tally’s best friend throughout childhood but he turned 16 just a few months before her That means he got his surgery first and left for the city He promises that they’ll stay friends in the meantime and even sets a date to meet up with Tally at their spot by the bridge so he can tell her all about what life is like as a Pretty When Tally tracks him down to find out why he’s clearly different and almost perturbed to see her But when Tally needs a bit of persuading to infiltrate The Smoke Being with her back in the Uglies’ compound again brings up some old feelings though turning him into what’s known as a Special he ends up falling off the side of a building seemingly to his death (we’re not convinced as we didn’t see a body and there’s definitely room for sequels) None of this happens in the book; he’s never made a Special and in fact Tally and Peris even end up working together again though their relationship is forever changed because we had the protective umbrella of the tutelage of Scott Westerfeld,” he said of the changes to Peris Westerfeld served as an executive producer on the film and even had a small came he “could not have been a better partner.” He understands there’s a fundamental difference in the medium of a 350-page book as compared to a 100- or 110-minute film,” the director explained very flexible and very supportive that we captured the essence of what he put forward in the first book of the series.” There’s one major piece of the first book that remains the same in the film — specifically Tally realizes that she has to be the first test subject for a cure to the Pretty operation That means she has to get the operation first So she bravely calls out the Special Circumstances agents hunting her: “My name is Tally Youngblood Fans of the novel will of course recognize that that’s the final line of dialogue in the book and one the filmmaker absolutely wanted to preserve that’s the line that propels you into what we’re certainly [hoping] are the second and third films.” “Uglies” is now streaming on Netflix explores the complex personal and artistic life of Luigi Pirandello through the figures of his wife is now in cinemas in Italy. It immerses us in the relationship between Pirandello and the women who marked his life: his wife whose fragile mental health profoundly affected his existence the young actress who became his artistic companion and inspiration With costume design created by Andrea Cavalleto the Peris Costumes team has worked closely together to help recreate the era and capture the essence of each character through garments that reflect both early 20th century Italy and the intensity of the emotional bonds At Peris Costumes we are proud to be part of ‘The Legend of the Titanic’ an immersive exhibition that relives one of the most transcendental events of the 20th century Madrid Artes Digitales presents this innovative proposal at the Matadero de Madrid where the staging will questions
