During his multi-day visit to the Zlín region
Ambassador to the Czech Republic Bijan Sabet visited the facility of U.S
semiconductor manufacturer onsemi in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm
the company announced a planned multi-year investment totaling up to $2 billion (around 44 billion CZK) to expand its chip production and establish a state-of-the-art vertically integrated silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility at the Rožnov plant
One of the largest planned foreign investments in Czech history
this expansion would position Czechia and the Zlín region as a European hub for chip production and high-tech industry
Onsemi has operated in the town beneath the Beskydy Mountains for almost three decades
Following his visit to the Rožnov facility
Ambassador Sabet stated: “Onsemi is a great example of a U.S
company making a real and positive impact on Czechia
This investment would help realize the economic potential of this region and also strengthen the U.S.-Czechia relationship.” Ambassador Sabet further praised the company’s development efforts
leveraging brownfield investments in the existing industrial complex to bring additional high-tech manufacturing
“Silicon carbide is becoming increasingly fundamental as global demands for power and energy-efficient solutions continue to rise
This strategic investment would underscore the Czech Republic’s commitment to innovation and position the broader European region at the forefront of critical technologies enabling advancements in electrification and artificial intelligence
We are thankful for Ambassador Sabet’s support of our planned investment
which is crucial in driving these transformative global megatrends forward,” said Aleš Cáb

Allegro rose 21% to $26.90 at 9:43 a.m. in New York trading Monday, giving the Manchester, New Hampshire-based company a market value of about $5 billion. ON Semi fell 0.7% to $46.71, for a market value of $19.7 billion.
Allegro’s biggest shareholder is Japan’s Sanken Electric Co., with a stake of about 32%, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Sanken Electric jumped 17% in Tokyo trading Monday, their biggest daily gain since November 2015.
Last week, Allegro announced it was replacing its chief executive officer of almost three years, Vineet Nargolwala, with longtime executive Mike Doogue.
Allegro develops advanced semiconductors, describing itself as a leader in power and sensing solutions for motion control and energy-efficient systems. The products are used in car engines and safety systems, as well as data centers and factories. On Semi also develops power and sensing technologies used in automotive, industrial and cloud-computing sectors.
Analysts have warned that automotive chipmakers could face sales pressure as the electric-vehicle market in the US slows under Donald Trump’s administration.

Largest one-off direct foreign investment in the country
US chipmaker Onsemi has announced it will invest up to $2 billion to establish a silicon carbide manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic
The project would represent the largest one-off direct foreign investment in the country
Described by Onsemi as a “state-of-the-art
vertically integrated silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility,” the investment would expand on the company’s current operations in Roznov pod Radhostem – a town in the east of the country – which includes silicon crystal growth
silicon and silicon carbide wafer manufacturing (polished and EPI) and a silicon wafer fab
Silicon carbide is a synthetically produced crystalline compound of silicon and carbon
The material provides several advantages over conventional silicon for power applications
making it particularly suitable for the manufacturing of high-voltage power devices
The chips produced at Onsemi’s plant would be used to improve the energy efficiency of applications in electric vehicles
The news comes in the same month that STMicroelectronics announced it would invest $5.43bn to build a high volume 200mm silicon carbide (SiC) chip manufacturing facility in Catania
"Our brownfield investment would establish a Central European supply chain to better service our customers’ rapidly increasing demand for innovative technologies that improve the energy efficiency in their applications,” said Hassane El-Khoury
Information about any financial incentives provided to Onsemi under the EU Chips Act has not been disclosed
although the company is looking to expand its European operations
last week Onsemi announced it would be cutting 1,000 jobs globally whilst consolidating nine sites and reassigning or relocating a further 300 employees in order to streamline operations and reduce costs
the company cut 1,900 jobs citing similar cost-saving reasons

The Czech Republic experienced its first tropical day of 2024 yesterday
with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius at least
the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU) announced on Facebook
the earliest tropical day of the year ever recorded was on 17 April
meteorologists reported that more than half of the stations had recorded a summer day with a maximum temperature of 25°C or higher
it got much warmer at many stations; at the Prague-Komorany station they measured 30.6 degrees Celsius,” the CHMU said after 3pm
The Prague-Komorany station was eventually overtaken by the one in Ceske Budejovice
where the temperature hit 30.9°C at around 3:30pm in the area of Roznov
The previous record for 7 April at this station was six degrees lower
A tropical day was also registered today in Caslav
Temperature records were beaten yesterday at almost all stations that have been measuring for 30 years or more
Records had already fallen at most stations on Saturday
with the warmest temperature measured in Doksany
The unusually hot weather for April will last in the Czech Republic until Tuesday
A cold front will move across the country from the west from Tuesday to Wednesday
Temperatures will fall by more than ten degrees to below 15°C

manufacturing company onsemi has announced it will invest USD 2 billion (CZK 46.3 billion) in expanding production at its plant in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm
This marks the highest company-related investment in the modern history of the Czech Republic
The new plant will focus on producing intelligent power semiconductors
and data centers with artificial intelligence
as it works with onsemi in providing car parts
UniCredit Bank analyst Pavel Sobíšek believes that Rožnov and its surroundings have the potential to become the "Silicon Valley of Central Europe," with the onsemi investment potentially attracting more high-tech fields to the Czech Republic
Deloitte analyst David Marek also sees the investment as a potential inspiration for other technology companies from abroad
"The benefit of this investment is not only the extraordinary amount
but also the production with high added value
which is exactly what the Czech Republic has needed for a long time," said Marek
Town mayor Jan Kučera stated: "We are very happy because it is a type of production that has a high added value
and is built by a partner who has been active here for a long time and is one of the best."
onsemi's current production in Rožnov is at 10 million chips per day
it is expected to increase by hundreds of percent
This will also have a positive impact on the labor market
with the company planning to increase the number of jobs at the plant from 1,700 to roughly 3,000
With the expected influx of new workers and residents
the city of Rožnov has prepared a plan for roughly CZK 2 billion and 42 projects
These projects will focus on improving transportation
"This is an extraordinary opportunity for the city," said Kučera
The new plant is expected to contribute more than CZK 6 billion per year to the Czech Republic's GDP
as it will also help with European self-sufficiency in chip production
It could also serve as a catalyst for other companies considering investing in the country
company’s expansion into Czechia is good news for the Czech economy and industry
although analysts are keeping a watchful eye on the outcome of the U.S

Česká spořitelna economist Michal Skořepa says that a victory for Donald Trump would reduce the likelihood of more U.S
companies moving branches to Europe due to his isolationism and “America-first” approach
is less opposed to moving American business abroad
“Biden's policies encourage broader international cooperation and investment in technology,” agrees Helena Horská
a member of the government's National Economic Council
Horská affirms that “pragmatism always wins in business,” and a business relationship that would benefit both Czechia and the U.S
– especially against foreign powers such as China – would be something that Trump utilizes.
