The Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory
has recognised the Spanish Athenaeum as the first Place of Memory outside our borders
is a benchmark for Spanish education and culture in the US
This recognition is part of the programme of events to mark the 85th anniversary of the arrival in Mexico of the 'Sinaia'
the first Republican refugee ship to leave Spain during the Civil War
"The Spanish Athenaeum sought a space for coexistence between the exiles themselves and Mexican culture," the minister said
including the exiles themselves and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren
making it a repository of both the memory of exile and the newly created Spanish culture," he added
The Ateneo Español de México was founded in 1949 by Spanish exiles and Mexican intellectuals
with the aim of preserving and disseminating the democratic memory of the Republican exiles

who for many became the "big mama" of Republican exile," Minister Torres said
The delegation also visited the Colegio Madrid
a centre created in 1941 that has worked from then to the present day
at first educating the children of Spanish exiles and later other young Mexicans
with a pedagogical model that is related to the educational policy of the Second Republic

I’m guessing you haven’t heard of the Sinaia Concours d’Elegance
Lately it seems like any town with a traffic light is hosting their own concours
so unless you’re marking up your calendar with Romanian car shows it likely passed by you unnoticed
2017 marked only the seventh iteration since the event’s rejuvenation in 2011 (its history extends back to the ‘30s
but it was mostly dormant following those early versions)
so nobody’s losing any cred for not being up-to-date on the automotive happenings in the town of Sinaia
The point I’m attempting to make is it’s a smaller affair than the big shows
and its cachet understandably has some catching up to do
Here is where I might say something about how you’re missing out on a great weekend and why it should be “on your bucket list,” but the reality is that you’re going to see a far better selection of cars at the established Villa d’Estes and Pebble Beaches of the world
A plane ticket to Lake Como or Monterey will give you all the multi-million-dollar metal you can handle
but what you won’t get at those big brand name shows is the spirit and gumption that I found at this one
The location—Peles Castle—can contest any visage of opulence outside of Monaco
so in that regard Sinaia was similar to other celebrated concours venues
but it was the people in attendance that created the kind of atmosphere conspicuously missing elsewhere
because there is certainly a lot of it swirling around the cars and stories that compel us
but I’ve rarely seen such an unfiltered amount of it
Rather than throngs of people who might prefer being seen to being a spectator
the crowd here was predominantly made up of families; parents and children in matching smiles surrounded every car that rolled in
from humble Dacias to pristine V16 Cadillacs
The owners hovered around their prides and joys in the typical fashion too
but engaging with them led to agendaless conversations about their cars
and often their interest in your opinions instead of the all too common barely-veiled game of oneupmanship that you never intended to play in the first place
so the absence of these weird “come talk to me about my car
but be ready to be condescended to about it” attitudes was not only refreshing
but energizing; I think I made a few people’s days by being the interested American wanting to know what compelled them to import an Impala or Corvette into Romania
but I know for certain that their responses made mine
All of my questions were met with massive smiles and that kind of flustered jumble of stories that excitement tries to spit out all at once
and to just share the nebulous joy of spending a sunny summer Sunday bullshitting about cars
the show didn’t disappoint in that regard either
I won’t pretend the entry list could contest the likes of Amelia Island’s
but let’s reconsider what the metrics are for a moment
What’s more important: monetary value or emotional
Is a Ferrari 250 decidedly better than a panel van made by a communist-controlled company borrowing plans from the French
but which one would you want to talk to the owner about
but when it comes to these legends their stories have been told time and time again
and seeing them at a concours can sometimes feel more like checking items off a list than any kind of deity-meeting experience it’s chalked up to be
I’d rather bend my steps toward the Eldorado and its cowboy-hatted owner who’s working on his English
Its presence in Sinaia was noteworthy beyond the machine’s rarity and pedigree
The reason for this is a 98-year-old Romanian race car driver named Marin Dumitrescu
Here is an interesting man: he was a multi-time moto
and circuit racing champion who was more or less stuck in his country for the majority of his career behind the Iron Curtain
That didn’t prevent him from getting some seat time in the 328 in period though
reunited with the machine he was so successful with in his youth was touching
and a reaffirmation that these shows and events and gatherings and meetings and whatever else you want to call them should be judged on their character and not their exclusivity

Day 1a of the 2019 Unibet Open Sinaia €1,100 Main Event is in the books and the ski-edition of the popular mid-stakes live poker tournament circuit is off to a good start thanks to 120 entries on the first of three starting days for the festival highlight
Only half the field made it through the eight levels of 60 minutes each
The UK's Nikolay Ponomarev bagged up the lead at the New Montana Hotel
while two-time Unibet Open champion and Unibet Poker ambassador Dan Murariu is on track for another deep run on home soil
Ponomarev topped the 56 survivors with a stack of 141,200
Finland's Johannes Vaeisaenen follows close behind with 139,500
Best local player on the first starting day is Andrei Jambor
who scored a dramatic late knockout with queens versus aces when he rivered the flush against top set and soared up all the way to 135,500
Other big stacks and notables who already punched their ticket for Day 2 include Razvan Bizera (120,300)
The sole Unibet ambassador who bagged and tagged was Dan Murariu
who advanced with an above-average stack of 77,700
Less fortunate were David Lappin and Quentin Lecomte
who both ran out of chips and will have to re-enter in the turbo heat 1c in order to join Murariu for Day 2
The list of Day 1a casualties also contains Tomasz Kozub
The day started with around 80 players in their seats and the only two-time champions Moolhuizen and Murariu were battling for another chance to make it three Unibet Open titles
the first attempt came to an end in level six when his queen-high flush draw didn't get there
Sandor Hadnagy called in a battle of the blinds with ace-ten for the second pair and further improved to two pair on the river
Adrian "NMPfan" Nica was the first player to boast a six-figure stack after a double knockout with ace-king suited versus king-queen and a short stack with nine-seven suited
Andrei Spataru flopped best with top two pair when the bigger side pot emerged
but Nica spiked an ace on the river to make the best hand
The second half of the day wasn't as kind to the Romanian
2017 Unibet Open Bucharest runner-up Robert Vukovic lost a flip with queens against the ace-king of Tymur Kasilov
more than half of the field bowed out and can take another shot the following day in the turbo heat
A bumper field is expected for Day 1b and the action will be streamed on the Unibet Poker Twitch channel
Two of the popular Side Events took place on Wedenesday and claimed the spotlight of the feature table
the Tag Team Championship crowned a champion and it was the team of Alexandre Reard and John "Swifty" Pyle who claimed the bragging rights and a deluxe treatment at the spa
all nine esports streamers were back in action with Pyle right back at it
He seemingly couldn't lose an all in showdown on the way to back-to-back victories
his bid came short by one spot as Kevin "Rotterdam" van der Kooi took the lion's share of the €10,000 prize pool
The top three were supposed to be paid and the final four contenders made a bubble deal to ensure €300 to the fourth-place finisher
That happened to be Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller
and he was followed by Radu "Rdu" Dima
van der Kooi was the overwhelming chip leader and reduced the field from three to one in consecutive hands
First he sent Dima to the rail with J♦8♥ versus A♣K♦ as the board came Q♣9♦8♣2♠J♥ to give the Dutchman two pair
Pyle held Q♣9♦ and two live cards against the K♠8♣ of van der Kooi
the esports Battle Royale XII champion was crowned in van der Kooi
Most of the esports streamers will join the action on Day 1b of the €1,100 Main Event
The third and final heat with 20-minute levels then starts at 10 p.m
Both starting days will feature eight levels and six levels of late registration
only players that busted in the previous two flights can re-enter and entirely new participants can also enter and re-enter once on Day 1c

Hasdeu was interested in the history of language and became involved in a debate over whether Romanian was Latinate (as it is considered today). His conclusion was that Romanian was in fact of Slavic origin, but that Slavic words were displaced by the frequent use of Latin ones in what linguists call the “theory of words’ circulation”. In 1876 Hasdeu was appointed head of the State Archives in Bucharest, and in 1878 he became a professor of philology at the University of Bucharest.
While the idea behind the plates was fascinating, few believed that they were authentic, even in the 1870s. They had no provenance, having conveniently been “discovered” in a museum warehouse, and they also looked new. A story emerged after their discovery by Hasdeu that they had been made as copies in 1875 from gold originals that had gone missing. That explained their discovery and new appearance, but there was no sign of the gold originals, nor any historical reference to them.
It then came to light that the lead in the plates had been made from recycled nails at a factory in Sinaia, Romania, which did not help the argument for authenticity. The 19th-century origin of the lead plates was confirmed by a recent study of the 35 surviving plates (the others have since gone missing), which are made of printing lead used in the second half of the 19th century. But they still could conceivably have been cast from lost ancient gold originals.
A single word in the text of the plates renders them suspect. The plates include the Greek name for Comidava, a town in Dacia that was described by the ancient author Ptolemy. However, in 1942 it was discovered that Ptolemy had miswritten the name of the town, which was actually called Cumidava.
Hasdeu is credited with the discovery of the plates, and most skeptical scholars now believe that he also designed them. It would have required extraordinary knowledge and patience to prepare the remarkably consistent and detailed text and the perhaps still more impressive images. Hasdeu was one of the few scholars in Romania with both the knowledge and interest to pull it off.
The one thing that all scholars agree on is that the lead plates, if they are indeed inauthentic, represent a truly brilliant forgery by a scholar of the highest order, with a vast knowledge of archaeology, linguistics, history and ancient art. Circa 1875, Hasdeu fits the profile.

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone
and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience
we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level
These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities
Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people
This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times
We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs
the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly
This application remediates the website’s HTML
adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users
and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments
If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement
You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique
alongside various different behavioral changes
to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read
As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site
they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively
Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements
alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom
to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website
we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes
we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons
etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons
the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described
It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image
using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology
To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time
users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination
Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML
and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard
This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys
trigger buttons and links using the Enter key
navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys
and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally
keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus
or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard
The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear
and not allow the focus drift outside of it
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus)
and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible
so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them
we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs
there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible
or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible
we are continually improving our accessibility
updating and improving its options and features
and developing and adopting new technologies
All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility

Eight levels were scheduled for Day 2 of the 2019 Unibet Open Sinaia €1,100 Main Event
local time for the day to wrap up after an extensive bubble period
only 199 hopefuls had returned to the poker tables in the New Montana Hotel and the end of the day turned into a roller coaster of emotions
With just two spots away from the elusive min-cash of €2,085 at the end of the eighth level
tournament staff decided to continue playing until the bubble burst and one full level passed with several players being at risk forced all in and surviving under miraculous circumstances
Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney did so twice while fellow Irishman Padraig O'Neill found himself forced all in from the big blind and he came out on top of a six-way limped and checked down pot
it was Oleksandr Sharov that fell short of the money when his ace-six was bested by Razvan Sabau and his queen-jack
A jack-high straight on the board gave Sabau the best hand and right after
all 47 survivors bagged and tagged for the night
They will be aiming to take home as much of the €366,000 prize pool as possible on the remaining two tournament days
Sabau leads the field after Day 2 with 741,000
only a smidge ahead of Ran Shahar (735,000)
Cristian Grecu follows in third place with 711,000
Further notables include Silviu Baltateanu (612,000)
Aku Joentausta (172,000) and Toni Judet (172,000)
Three former Unibet champions are aiming for a repeat victory
Traian Bostan (pictured above) advanced with 330,000
Martin Soukup bagged up 227,000 and Unibet Poker ambassador Dan Murariu has 132,000
Fellow ambassadors Espen Uhlen Jorstad (240,000)
Daiva Byrne (23,000) and the master of short stack grind Dara O'Kearney (3,000) are joined by Alan "Hotted89" Widmann (72,000)
Esports Battle Royale XII champion Kevin "Rotterdam" van der Kooi was among those that fell agonizingly close of the money with a chip and a chair story to tell and fellow esport streamers John "Swifty" Pyle and Andrey "reynad" Yanyuk also bowed out before the money
it was a disappointing day at the poker tables for David Lappin
Lappin ran with king-jack suited into the pocket aces of Yanyuk while Simpson was haunted by his nemesis hand once more
Simpson busted with queens and ran with queens into kings mid-way through the day
Plenty of other notables came short in their bid for a payday in Sinaia as Alexandru Papazian
Carmen Zainescu and Andrei Boghean all ran out of chips much sooner than they had hoped for
While the electric pace of the eliminations before the dinner break halved the field in the first four levels
the action thereafter slowed down and culminated in the frantic bubble period
many players advanced with very short stacks for Day 3 and will be under immediate pressure on resuming blinds of 4,000/8,000 and a big blind ante of 8,000
local time and will aim to play down to a final table
The action of the feature table will be streamed on a security delay of 30 minutes on the Unibet Poker Twitch channel
PokerNews will be your one-stop-shop on the way to crowning another champion of the popular mid-stakes circuit
Tune back in then to find out who makes the cut and will fight another day on the way to crowning the next Unibet Open champion in the snowy mountains of Romania
The live stream action of the feature table will run on a security delay of 30 minutes on the Unibet Poker Twitch channel and the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action
racking up 341.2 million hours of watch time across the world

Brown bear protecting three cubs closes Poenari Castle used by Romania’s Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century
While Dracula’s legend usually fails to scare tourists away from the blood-sucking vampire’s 15th century castle, a large, furry and protective mother bear has had more success.
Romanian authorities have declared Poenari castle off limits after visitors climbing the 1,480 steps up to the ruins had close shaves with the animal and her three cubs.
Read more“The environment ministry has given us the green light for the four bears to be captured and moved elsewhere,” local official Emilian Dragnea said in a statement
“But we still have to decide where to remove them to,” he said
Police blamed tourists for leaving food which attracts the animals
Poenari Castle was used by Prince Vlad the Impaler Tepes, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel “Dracula”. The bigger tourist attraction however is Bran Castle in Transylvania, which has tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler
In 2014 a senior politician from the Transylvanian region called for the army to be brought in to deal with the growing number of bears
following a string of cases involving damage to private property
“The [bear] problem needs the involvement of specialised state institutions such as the police
the paramilitary and even the army,” Csaba Borboly said
Romania is home to around 6,000 brown bears
They represent 60% of the European bear population
Brown bears are amongst the largest living carnivores and can grow to an enormous size
The largest brown bear on record was caught in Romania and weighed 480kg
We love classic cars here at Drivemag so when BMW invited us to the 2016 edition of the Sinaia Concours d’Elegance in Romania we naturally said yes
Held in the picturesque town of Sinaia in the Carpathian Mountains on June 25
the event has reached the sixth consecutive year of gathering beautiful classic cars around the Peles Palace
the Neo-Renaissance building is the main attraction of a beautiful estate that used to serve as a summer retreat for Romania’s former royal family
29 cars from 4 countries entered the FIVA-sanctioned contest
divided into six categories: Pre-WW2 Cabriolets
The variety of cars on display was surprising
Seeing a single-cylinder 1907 REO Model G next to a stunning 1936 Packard Super Eight or a 1958 GAZ M21-01 in mint condition is like being in three different eras at the same time
That feeling became even stronger when each of the cars had to be driven at low speed in front of the jury
which was strategically placed in front of the palace’s main entrance
We loved all the cars that we saw in Sinaia
but if we had to choose a favorite it would be the 1936 Packard Super Eight — the car that eventually won the grand prize
It’s a gorgeous convertible and it’s so well-maintained that you’d think it just came out the Packard Automotive Plant in Detroit
The Packard also won its Pre-WW2 Cabriolet class
with other class winners including a 1931 Ford A Town Sedan (Pre-WW2 Sedan)
a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 220 B (Post-WW2 Sedan)
a 1952 Triumph Renown 2000 (Post-WW2 Cabriolet)
a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette (Post-WW2 Coupé)
and a squeaky clean 1969 Dacia 1300 (Made in Romania)
there was more classic metal to see in Sinaia
the most attractive of which you can admire in the video and photo gallery attached to this article
we loved the 2016 Sinaia Concours d’Elegance
and we’ll definitely return next year
time travel doesn’t get any cheaper than this
After an extensive bubble period at the end of Day 2
the 2019 Unibet Open Sinaia €1,100 Main Event special ski-edition has seen a field of 366 whittled down to the last 47 hopefuls at the New Montana Hotel and all of them are guaranteed at least €2,085 for their efforts
All eyes are set on the top prize of €71,000 and the bragging rights that come along with it
and three former champions remain in contention
Leading the field into Day 3 is Razvan Sabau with 741,000
closely followed by Ran Shahar (735,000) and Cristian Grecu (711,000)
Further notables with big stacks include Silviu Baltateanu (612,000)
Gilles Huet (343,000) and Jean-Serge Baril (318,000)
Aku Joentausta (172,000) and Toni Judet (172,000) are also in the mix
Team Unibet will be represented by the ambassadors Espen Uhlen Jorstad (240,000)
Dara O'Kearney (3,000) as well as popular streamer Alan "Hotted89" Widmann (72,000)
who triumphed in Varna in 2010 and Sint Maarten in 2012
is one of three former Unibet Open winners in contention
Traian Bostan (330,000) emerged victorious on home soil in Bucharest in 2016 and 2013 Malta champion Martin Soukup (227,000) will also aim to add a second title to his poker resume
local time with blinds of 4,000/8,000 and a big blind ante of 8,000
Due to the longer bubble in the early morning hours
the early action is expected to be fast-paced and the penultimate tournament day aims to reduce the field to the final table for the big showdown on Sunday
Three other Side Events will run throughout the day with Alexandre Reard leading the field into Day 2 of the €2,200 High Roller
the start of the €550 DeepStack Open Cup and the €80+10 QUEENSRULES Ladies Event hosted by Daiva Byrne
the PokerNews team will be on the floor to cover all the Main Event action and the live stream on the Unibet Poker Twitch channel runs on a security delay of 30 minutes with hole cards displayed

is making significant progress in its renovation and consolidation works started in the middle of last year
One of the most special works is the completion of the stained glass windows portraying the architects of Peles Castle
which will be installed in the future Gallery of Peles Architects
Among the main objectives of the restoration project is the opening of the Peles Architects Gallery within Vila Sipot
a unique exhibition space dedicated to the architects who built and developed the Peles Royal Domain in Sinaia
from the initial plans of Peles Castle to the entire architectural and landscape ensemble that exists today
“By rehabilitating Vila Sipot and reintegrating it into the touristic circuit
we are undertaking the greatest effort to conserve
and natural heritage of the Peles Royal Domain over the past 60 years
We extend an open invitation to all those who understand the importance of this project for Romania – individuals or companies – to contribute through donations or sponsorships
thus joining the efforts to protect Romania’s architectural and historical heritage
I thank all those who have already chosen to partner with us in this endeavor,” declared Ion Tuca

the construction consolidation works have been completed
as well as the replacement of thermal and electrical sanitary installations
and the reconstruction of the structural elements of the space that will be dedicated to the Peles Architects Gallery
Following the model of great historical monuments worldwide, Vila Sipot will subsequently be valorized by opening it as a tourist attraction, a multifunctional space for events, an inspirational workspace for young architects, or other creative professions.
Vila Sipot served as the workspace and residence of the Czech architect of the Royal House
during the activities of designing the extensions and arrangements of Peles Castle
King Carol I himself made frequent visits to the architectural office to oversee the design and implementation of his requirements
The building is located in the Peles Stream valley and constitutes
together with the access path to Pelisor Castle
All renovation works are carried out by specialists authorized by the Ministry of Culture for historical monuments
The team of coordinating specialists for the project includes Eng
as well as specialists from UAU “Ion Mincu,” USAMV Bucharest
The Peles Royal Heritage Association is the only non-governmental and non-profit entity created with the mission of protecting
and landscape heritage of the Peles Royal Domain as a key element of Romania’s culture
APRP promotes the historical culture and values of Romania both domestically and internationally
Tucked away in the forests surrounding the Romanian mountain town of Sinaia
Peles Castle is a one-of-a-kind piece of local history
BR takes a look at what this tourist attraction has to offer visitors and the events taking place there this fall
“The Royal Castle stands amongst other monuments
in an extremely pretty landscape with gardens built on terraces
The castle itself is very impressive owing to the riches it has accumulated: old and new canvases
and with everything arranged with good taste
We took a long hike in the mountains; afterwards we picnicked on the green grass
and the atmosphere was extremely pleasant.” So wrote Kaiser Franz Joseph I of Austria in a letter on 2 October 1896
People from all around the world come to see the beautiful Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains
Most of them share the same opinion as the Austro-Hungarian emperor
which many voice in online reviews on the most popular travel websites
Peles Castle was built at the initiative of Romania’s King Carol I, to serve as a summer residence. The most important event hosted by Peles Castle up until the abdication of King Michael I, in December 1947, was the celebration of the semi-centenary of the castle in 1933, according to museum officials.
the castle was closed at the order of the communist authorities and its historical assets were inventoried
decorative artworks and books were transferred to the National Art Museum in Bucharest
other assets were handed over to various cultural institutions around Romania
while the other estates making up the Peles domain became boarding houses for writers
artists and musicians approved by the communist regime
the private residence of the second royal couple
the former hunting lodge belonging to the first King of Romania and the residence of Kings Carol II and Michael I
French violinist Jacques Thibaud and Romanian writer Vasile Alecsandri visited often as guests of Queen Elizabeth of Romania
also known by the pen name of Carmen Sylva for her writing
many foreign notables such as US presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford
Libya’s Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat were welcomed to the castle
Peles Castle has a 3,200-sqm (34,000 sq ft) floor plan with over 170 rooms
many with dedicated themes inspired by world cultures
All the rooms are lavishly furnished and decorated to the slightest detail
The Gustav Klimt and Kunstlerkompanie expo will open at Peles Castle on September 15. The exhibition, which includes works by the young Viennese artists Gustav Klimt, Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch, done at the request of King Carol I, will be open to the public until December 15. The works currently hosted at the castle were completed between 1883 and 1886 at Kunstler-Compagnie.
Kunstler-Compagnie was a painting studio active between 1879 and 1892
It produced decorative works for private and public buildings inside and outside the Austro-Hungarian Empire
Peles Castle is the most important host of Gustav Klimt’s works in Romania
These can be grouped into three categories: the King’s Ancestors Gallery
including ancestors from the Hohenzollern House; copies of well known works; and original works which are on display in the castle’s Theater Hall or on the ceiling of the Honor Stairs
The story of this monastery starts in the 17th century
impressed by the beauty of an Orthodox monastery in the holy lands
decided to build a monastery named after Mount Sinai
One of the aims of its location was to offer protection to those who traveled the commercial route on the Prahova River Valley
which became the first electrically-lit place of worship in Romania
who made contemporary Romanian music famous worldwide with his amazing Romanian Rhapsodies
The artist enjoyed the support of Queen Elizabeth
recognizing the talent of the young musician
put a room at his disposal at Peles Castle
The artist was so impressed by the beauty of Sinaia that after a tour of the United States he decided to build a house here
until 1946 when Enescu left Romania for good
the musician constantly returned to Sinaia
to spend a least one month a year in the town
between his tours of Europe and North America
Enescu’s “Glade” Villa in Sinaia ensured him the calm and peace required to create
the great composer donated the mansion to the Romanian state
so it could be used as a place for artists to relax and work

On September 3, at the local hour 14:20, the most famous train in Europe, the Orient Express, will arrive in Bucharest central station Gara de Nord. The legendary train’s stop is part of its Paris – Istanbul route. The train is on its second stop in Romania, after a short pause in Sinaia, where travelers visited the Peles castle
The story of Orient Express started 125 years ago
Its main purpose was to connect Europe from West to East
Vienna and Bucharest were all part of its early network of stations
revolutions and the Cold War were to affect these routes: while new cities were added
After big changes transformed Europe in 1989 with the fall of the Iron Curtain
train returned to some of its earliest routes
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express has now added Prague
Krakow and Dresden to its list of destinations
The original Orient Express was originally launched in October 1883
Budapest and Bucharest to Constantinople (Istanbul)
celebrities and shady characters between great European cities up until the 1920s
Oana Vasiliu
Our fifth (and last) night in Transylvania was spent in the town of Sinaia. Below Tiffany will share why she chose this property
in plotting out our activities and the distances between them
it made more sense to break up our trip with a stay in the mountain/resort town of Sinaia
This would put us a bit closer to Bucharest
and weather-permitting allow us to do some hiking in the surrounding mountains (though sadly the weather did not permit)
and (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) at least in terms of lodging options seems like a more popular weekend destination for Romanians looking for a break from the city than a place necessarily catering to international tourists
There are some smaller bed and breakfasts in town as well
but nothing that stood out as incredibly charming
to see the look on Ben’s face when I told him we were staying at a place called “Vila Economat,” which paid off spectacularly
and staying here would have 1000% been worth it for that alone
because the hotel is on the grounds of the Peles Castle
“Economat” for those concerned
doesn’t have any relation to either price points or laundromats — rather it comes from French
and the association here is more with a steward or bursar
The building was originally used by palace staff and officials
When I made the reservation through booking.com there was only one double room and two suites available (which is odd
as the hotel didn’t seem that occupied)
but as you’ll see in the review the premium for the “suite” wasn’t really worth it
so if you can book one or multiples of the “superior double” that would be my recommendation
Vila Economat was one of the only hotels we arrived at after dark
and the entire arrival experience felt a bit eery
In the towns leading up to Sinaia Tiffany and I couldn’t help but continuously comment on how just about everything looked haunted
and I think Vila Economat was the culmination of that
At first we had trouble finding the property
which seemed to be a common complaint based on online reviews
There was plentiful free parking out in front of the hotel
there was no one at the reception desk — as it turns out the front desk agent was eating her dinner in the restaurant
and the whole thing just reminded me of Tower of Terror
I swear every employee working at this hotel had a uniform that looked like a Halloween costume version of a hotel uniform
The check-in experience — and the service in general
The front desk agent brought us to our rooms
as the rooms were in a separate wing of the building
though sometimes places seem to me like they have bad “energy,” and this was definitely one of those places
Frankly it may have partly been because the carpets were disgusting and the floors squeaked with every step
I feel like they could have made some less harsh lighting choices
Our rooms were both on the second floor and to the right
There was a living area with a couch and two chairs
and then a desk and TV deeper into the room
I can’t emphasize enough the extent to which the floor squeaked with every step
and the tootsie-roll shaped bed accessory looked like it hadn’t been replaced in a decade
which was back towards the entrance and featured a walk-in shower
The room also had a balcony with a couple of seats
and the speeds were better than one might assume
I think Tiffany’s superior room may have had the all around better layout (though her toilet setup was a bit weird)
The hotel had a restaurant located right next to reception
We had dinner in the hotel’s restaurant
The menu read as follows (one dollar is about four lei):
while Tiffany had the chicken with cream and mushrooms
while Tiffany had the vanilla and chocolate parfait
The service was exceedingly unfriendly and inattentive
Perhaps the highlight of the dining experience (other than Tiffany’s company) was that they had a TV on the wall playing music videos quite loudly
including of Shawn Mendes (there’s just something about the Señorita music video
Service at breakfast was friendlier than in the evening
The “bread” we were offered with breakfast turned out to just be hamburger buns that were a couple of days old
The reason to stay here is because of the proximity to Peles Castle
The grounds of the property were pretty as well
In the morning we checked out after touring the castle
There’s something charming about Vila Economat
the reason you stay here is because of the property’s proximity to Peles Castle
If I were to do this trip again I’d probably just stop at Peles Castle enroute to Bucharest
since it’s only about 90 minutes away
unless I really wanted to spend a lot of time in Sinaia

You'll have to excuse the receptionist (she's from Barcelona)
On this evening we'd been sitting in traffic for two hours
and since we'd had a fantastic lunch in Brasov
and getting to the hotel had been a challenge
which sure was… cream-colored." - lol wow they sure went all in on that cream color
I'm admittedly not the least bit skilled in design
but I know this and allow those who are handle those decisions for me
Clearly whomever was in charge here had my aptitude for design choices but lacked the self awareness required to know they should outsource these decisions
I really hate it when having to read negative whining stuff - I guess that I should just stop checking in and leave it to the snowflakes to read
Where were all the people since you had troubles with reservations
I'm actually planning a trip to Romania next year
@Tiffany - any comments on the quality of the rest of the food (other than the omelette)
I have also never been warmly welcomed by a hotel in Romania..
among the few "services" where I felt they couldn't care less about my business
@Aaron - playing a music video channel in restaurants is (sadly) also common in Romania
but hotel restaurants there aren't usually viewed as "fancy," they're just there to serve the hotel guests
your dinners with those you went to see are at a place in town
The only exceptions are certain classic hotels downtown..
as many of the classic hotel-and-restaurants are now just hotels or just restaurants; among the rest
as many are severely lacking in quality in one or the other
@ George -- I had an omelette in the morning as well; it was fine
but tasty in that "my grandmother would have made this" kind of way
Playing Shawn Mendes on a public TV would be reason enough to skip this hotel
Too bad the rooms and service don't live up the charming exterior of the hotel
I knew French and Romanian are linguistically similar
So thoughtful that the menu tells you the weight of the egg (40g) and the exact 250ml you will get for your coffee
They really went all in on the monochrome color theme in that room
The photos almost look like they're taken with a yellow filter

As Romania’s capital city, it makes sense that Bucharest is where most people head to when traveling to the country. Bucharest is a fun place to spend several days exploring as it’s a city with loads going on
But it’s important to know that there are many other great destinations to be found throughout Romania
What’s nice is that many of these places can be comfortably visited as a day trip while you’re based in the capital
To show you the great potential that comes with the best day trips from Bucharest
here are some of the best places to visit from Bucharest
an aggregation site that searches and displays prices and availability from hundreds of car rental companies
helping you find the best possible car for your budget
Don’t want to drive or deal with the hassle of public transport
We’ve listed the best tour for each day trip (where available)
Easily one of the most well known attractions in Romania
Bran Castle has its own history and charms but still is best known for its connection to the famous fictional character Dracula
The connection between Dracula and Bran Castle has made this one of the most popular day tours from Bucharest
even though the connection is only that this Transylvanian castle most closely matches the description of Dracula’s castle in the novel
It’s hard to deny though that Bran Castle is a beautiful sight and an entertaining attraction to explore
and the former royal residence rooms to visit
not to mention a rather fitting secret passageway which links the first and third floors
Getting there: Getting from Bucharest to Bran Castle by train or bus takes at least 4 ½ hours which is not really worth it. A much better use of your time is to go with a guided tour which will show you other attractions in the area as well
Book Tour to Bran Castle
Brasov is one of the best side trips from Bucharest because it’s one of Transylvania’s most interesting and atmospheric cities
Begin your visit in the city’s main square of Piaţa Sfatului
home to some really pretty baroque buildings
walk over to the imposing and Gothic Black Church
exactly the kind of landmark you’d imagine is in Transylvania
Continue to explore the historic center of the city
taking in the medieval walls and various towers which once protected Brasov
Be sure not to miss out on a trip up on the cable car to the top of Mt
Tâmpa where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city and the surrounding forest-covered mountains
Getting there: There are regular trains that travel from Bucharest to Brasov, with the trip taking around 3 hours, plus or minus 20 minutes. To combine Brasov with other Transylvanian destinations, you should look at taking a guided tour
Book Tour to Brasov
One of the best places to visit in Romania
a visit to Peles Castle should not be missed
this castle looks like something taken straight out of a fairytale
The castle was built by 1883 for King Carol I of Romania as a royal summer residence
Visitors will get the classic view of the castle as they walk up through the castle grounds and admire the terrace gardens
Inside you can tour both floors of the castle or just the first floor and see the interior which is just as exquisite as the exterior
from the Indian-inspired Music Room to the Turkish Salon
Book Tour to Peles Castle
When it comes to things to see in Romania outside of Bucharest
the charming city of Sibiu is one not to be missed
Sibiu is an important city in Transylvania
with a Saxon heritage that lends it an appealing old-fashioned atmosphere perfect for sightseeing
Start by finding the city’s Great Square at the heart of the old town which is surrounded by notable landmarks like the City Hall and Brukenthal Palace
A short walk away is the Little Square where you can find the picture-perfect Bridge of Lies
Definitely take the time to climb up the tower of the Lutheran Cathedral as you’ll not only get to see its gorgeous tiled roof but also the Sibiu cityscape
you’ll want to take a walk down the Passage of Steps
a scenic staircase which runs between the two halves of the Old Town
Getting there: Possibly the furthest place you’d want to visit for the day
getting to Sibiu by public transport will take too long
For a day out in the glorious nature of Transylvania
it’s hard to beat Piatra Craiului National Park
On a visit to this stunning protected outdoor area in the southern Carpathian Mountains you’ll have plenty to see
Hiking is probably the most straightforward activity you can do during your day trip
but it is also possible to go horseback riding and rock climbing in certain areas
The national park boasts all sorts of landscapes
from forests and canyons to high mountain ridges and glacial lakes
One of the easiest hiking trails takes you through a canyon blanketed in forest
while longer hikes will take you higher and you can even visit some of the traditional villages found around the park
Getting there: Taking public transport to reach Piatra Craiului National Park from Bucharest is too long and complicated to really be a viable option
That means your best option is to drive there
but the Transfagarasan Highway is one of the most popular spots to see in Romania
Once you see photos of the views from there you’ll understand why all the fuss is being made over a road
the Transfagarasan Highway is only fully open during the summer but it makes for one heck of a scenic drive
The classic view of the highway is found once you reach Lake Balea; this is where the road endlessly snakes down the valley and dramatic mountains surround you
the drive provides a great range of scenery
with several lakes and plenty of forest to stop at and enjoy.
Book Tour to Transfagarasan Highway
Another of the classic Bucharest day trips that further showcases Transylvania
is the town of Rasnov and the citadel there
Above what is a fairly typical town for this part of Romania you’ll find the imposing sight of the hilltop Rasnov Citadel
this fortress built by the Teutonic Knights was intended as a refuge for the town’s people during times of war
Roaming the grounds of the citadel you’ll see houses and other important buildings which show this wasn’t just a place for the local elite
It’s hard not to appreciate the impressive walls which surround the citadel
and the museum here does a good job of adding context to all you’re seeing
Plus the views of the forests over the Carpathian Mountains aren’t half bad
Book Tour to Rasnov Citadel
If you have a fascination with underground attractions
the Slanic Prahova Salt Mine is the place for you
Delving 208 meters down into this historic mine you’ll be able to see some surprising sights inside Europe’s largest salt mine
One of the most impressive rooms is known as the Genesis Hall
inside of which are salt sculptures of famous Romanian cultural and historical personalities
the mine is also home to things like playgrounds
Because the air in the mine is said to have therapeutic qualities
To fully understand the significance of the mine
it’s best to visit the on-site Salt Museum and learn more about its history
Getting there: It’s possible to reach the town of Slanic from Bucharest by train, the trip takes around 2 ½ hours with limited connections. Alternatively, go with a guided tour and you’ll have everything handled for you
Book Tour to Slanic Salt Mine
Often overlooked for the many preserved castles throughout Romania
the ruins of Poenari Castle are still well worth the day trip
The ruins of this castle from the 15th century are found on Mount Cetatea and are another site in Romania connected with the infamous figure Vlad the Impaler
but there are parts of the castle walls and towers still standing
The hard part about visiting Poenari Castle is the 1,462 step stairway which visitors need to climb to reach it
there are plans to introduce a rack railway to make the trip up easier
Positioned up by the Carpathian Mountains and overlooking the Arges River
Getting there: Visiting the castle with public transport is awkward because of its remote location, so your best bet is to combine this spot with the Transfagarasan Highway in a single guided tour
Book Tour to Poenari Castle
Comana Nature Park is a great idea for a day out in nature
this nature reserve is particularly known for its wetland environments
Visitors can spend their time walking through the surrounding forest or along the shore of the lake
Bird watchers will definitely want to visit the nature park due to its biodiversity
with over 140 different species of birds calling Comana home
Close to the nature park you’ll find Comana Adventure Park
with outdoor activities like zip-lining and kayaking out on the Neajlov Delta
Over in town there’s also the Comana Monastery which
Getting there: At one time there were minibuses that connected CFR Progresu at the southern end of Bucharest with Comana
It is possible to get regular buses to Gostinari or Mihai Bravu from either side of the park and then get a taxi the rest of the way
The trip should take no longer than 1 ½ hours
Since Bulgaria isn’t very far from Bucharest
you may want to consider jumping over the border and visiting the stunning city of Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is a city that lives and breathes history
It’s best to begin here with a walk through the Old Town
find a viewpoint that lets you look out at the rows of Ottoman houses which cling to the hillside above the Yantra River
Gradually meander down the hillside through the houses and visit the Monument to the Asen Dynasty by the river
a huge medieval stronghold with walls that run a circle around its hilltop
Don’t miss the Patriarchal Cathedral and the highly unusual murals which cover its walls
Getting there: Again, a destination that is too far to get to by public transport, your choices are either to drive to Veliko Tarnovo or visit with a guided tour
Book Tour to Veliko Tarnovo
the city of Constanța offers travelers yet another type of day trip getaway
so jump straight to the city’s most iconic landmark
It may be an abandoned relic of a previous era
but the sight of this worn art nouveau building by the waterfront is still quite moving
head over to the Old Town for the rest of the city’s sights
Peter & Paul Orthodox Cathedral and the Great Mahmudiye Mosque to get different sides of the city’s religious history
before absorbing the broader picture with the National History and Archaeology Museum and the extensive Roman Mosaics complex
Getting there: One of the easy train trips from Bucharest, it takes just 2 hours to reach Constanta by train and 3 hours by bus. However, a more stress-free option is to have a guided tour take you and handle all the transportation
Book Tour to Constanta
The Danube River may be more closely associated with Vienna and Budapest
but Romania is home to the river’s incredible delta
Just shy of where the Danube meets the Black Sea
the Danube Delta is a place of incredible natural beauty
important wildlife diversity and a UNESCO world heritage site to boot
it’s understandable that much of the delta’s wildlife is made up of birds
One way travelers can explore the delta is to take a boat ride through the vast reed marshes which fill the habitat
If you’re after a relaxing time in a truly special environment
Book Tour to Danube Delta
A great combination of attractions to visit in one day is the pairing of Snagov Monastery and Mogosoaia Palace
Neither are far from Bucharest and together they create quite a pleasant
where you’ll find Snagov Monastery alone on an island in the lake there
is fabled to be where Vlad the Impaler was laid to rest
Then it’s across to the 17th-century mansion that is Mogosoaia Palace
Admire the complex design of the palace and take a stroll through the enchanting grounds that envelop it
Getting there: Difficult to reach from Bucharest by public transport and harder to get between, you’re probably going to want to take the easy way out and hop aboard a guided tour for these ones
Book Tour to Snagov Monastery & Mogosoaia Palace
In order to reach many of the places listed in this article
you first need to travel through the scenic Prahova Valley
it’s possible to spend a day in the Prahova Valley seeing what it and the nearby Bucegi Mountains have in store for you
Peles Castle is the most popular attraction in the valley
But there are also towns like Bușteni with its beautiful monastery and Cantacuzino Castle
The big draw of the valley though is the chance to take a cable car ride up into the mountains to see the incredible scenery and maybe go for a hike
a huge rock formation that looks like the mythical creature
Getting there: Many organized tours will take you through the Prahova Valley from Bucharest
your best approach is to take the train to somewhere like Bușteni
Those are many of the places around Bucharest you’ll want to consider when thinking about making a day trip
the hard part will be deciding how many days you want to set aside for day trips and which you’ll prioritize
