Bogdan Suceavă recently visited the town in southern Romania where he grew up and the grammar school where he studied math.
he was encouraged to pursue mathematics as a promising career
he won a prize at the Romanian National Mathematical Olympiad
where it crossed my mind for the first time
that I could study mathematics,” said Suceavă

“I am very grateful to the Cal State Fullerton academic community for recognizing the values I stand for and to the intellectual environment at Cal State Fullerton for making my career possible,” Suceavă said
encouraged and understood all the way — in all the moments of my career.”
The award is presented to a faculty member in recognition of “outstanding scholarship and/or creative work that is demonstrated through a variety of activities.” The award’s namesake served from 1970-80 as the university’s second president
Suceavă since he joined the faculty in 2002
I was involved in the hiring process and recall how much potential he had to do great things for the department and its students — particularly in scholarly and creative work,” said Alfonso Agnew
“He has far exceeded my wildest expectations
and he has managed to be humble throughout by always seeking to involve and elevate his students and colleagues as part of his efforts.”
As a researcher in pure mathematics, particularly his expertise in differential geometry and the foundations of geometry, Suceavă has produced 82 highly cited mathematics articles in top-tier
Euclidean geometry and the history of mathematics
I can assure you that this rate of publication in high-impact journals is incredible,” said Scott Annin
professor of mathematics and the university’s 2015 Outstanding Professor
“Pure mathematics generally does not get produced that quickly
Suceavă is able to manage it in an environment that demands much in the areas of teaching and service
Many of Suceavă’s articles are co-authored with his students after extensive training outside the classroom
he earned the Outstanding Contributions to Student Success award from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Suceavă spends a tremendous amount of time nurturing and mentoring students
and then makes sure that they have the maximum number of opportunities to present their work,” Dean Marie Johnson noted
“The quality of work that has been produced is extremely impressive.”
Beyond his extensive scholarship in mathematics, Suceavă is an award-winning writer and is highly respected in the literary community both in Europe and the United States
He is the author of 19 literary volumes in Romanian
Suceavă has earned several literary awards
including the Romanian Literary Fund Fiction Award and Association of Bucharest Writers Fiction Award
and is invited to speak at literary festivals in New York
Over a decade ago, Suceavă founded the Fullerton Mathematical Circle that brings highly gifted young mathematicians — middle school and high school students — to campus on Saturday mornings to improve their problem-solving abilities and participate in math competitions
More than 300 students from Orange County and the region have been involved with the enrichment program
facilitated by CSUF math students interested in teaching careers
The award recognized the department’s “excellent record of mentoring and graduating students from underrepresented groups.”
“I am very happy that our CSUF brand will forever stand proud on that list of winners next to UC Berkeley and MIT
for the work we do and for what we represent,” he said.
In spring 2020, Suceavă’s scholarship with fellow faculty members Adam Glesser and Matthew Rathbun and former student Isabel Serrano was recognized with the national George Pólya Award from the Mathematical Association of America
The committee noted: “This paper is truly a jewel.”
Other notable accolades include three essays, co-authored with his peers and former students, published in 2016, 2018 and 2021 in the high-status Princeton University Press anthology on Best Writings on Mathematics.

I want to say a special thank you to County Council President Gheorghe Flutur for hosting our reception in this impressive building
and to Mayor Ion Lungu for providing the outdoor venue for our display
We’re here today for the opening of our exhibition
which honors over a quarter of a century of the U.S.-Romania Strategic Partnership
To say that we in Embassy Bucharest are proud of this exhibit would be an understatement
The exhibit has toured throughout Romania
this display is a celebration of the good things and the great accomplishments that our bilateral partnership brings our people
This exhibit is structured on the pillars of the Strategic Partnership itself and the diplomatic
The title and the panels celebrate the human element
the people-to-people bridges that link us all
We the People – the venerated first words of the preamble to our Constitution – sets the tone for our most cherished document
We felt this title captures the sentiment of the foundation upon which all of our collaboration is based – the people of Romania and the United States working together to further our shared interests and values
The reference to the Constitution also reminds us of liberty
and other values that Romanians and Americans hold dear – values that our partnership and our Alliance seek to preserve and expand
This is especially relevant in these times when
the world faces the gravest threat to these values since World War II
In turbulent times people tend to most appreciate the blessings of freedom and democracy
I am saddened when I think about the atrocities committed against Ukrainians through Russia’s violent aggression –people forced from their homes
Russia’s war against Ukraine is a violent manifestation of Putin’s disregard for the international order based on rule of law premised on international cooperation
It is all the more important now to highlight and celebrate what we can achieve working together to build a safer
We do that by supporting essential principles: protecting and honoring human rights while ensuring collective liberty
enforcing the rule of law and caring for those most vulnerable
And so I am moved and inspired by the example Romanians
set for us all by generously supporting their neighbors
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all in this community who helped others in need and commend the local leaders here for the extraordinary outpouring of support for Ukraine and Ukrainians
I also commend the work of the Romanian government and the people of Romania in responding to this refugee crisis
We are excited about the Sister Cities program with Lansing
which speaks volumes about Suceava’s commitment to promoting peace and supporting community development
Bucovina is a land of cultural treasures and long kept traditions and has so many values all of us can learn from
This agreement bears mute testimony to the pledges of our Strategic Partnership: mutual respect
and cooperation through business and trade
as well as people-to-people exchanges in arts and culture
I look forward to seeing how this initiative contributes to further strengthening our bilateral relations
Please be assured you will always have a partner in the United States
Your presence here today is evidence of the continued partnership between our nations and peoples
Thank you all and each of you for over 25 years of friendship and partnership
I look forward to the next 25 years and hope you enjoy the exhibit

‘Notorious corruption’ and ‘Destruction of last virgin forests’
News articles about Romanian forests and their management are dominated by headlines like these or with a likewise tendency
But we were wondering: Is that really the only thing we should know about Romanian forests
Or are there also examples of good and sustainable forest management – as well as protection of primary forests?
As the Wageningen University & Research team of the SUPERB Project
which aims at upscaling forest restoration
we were eager to explore Romanian forests and to get in touch with its foresters
Although we heard the stories of the impressive untouched forests
After our SUPERB conference in Sibiu ended
we headed north-east to Suceava for an introduction to the last remnants of Europe’s primeval forest
but also curious about regular forest management in the productive spruce and beech stands of the Suceava district
The journey from Sibiu to Suceava was an adventure on itself: zigzagging between horse drawn hay carts and putting our rental car and our driving skills to the test on unpaved forest roads
Unscathed and in awe of the Transylvanian landscape we arrived at our hotel in a suburb of Suceava
as we all knew we had a great hike scheduled for tomorrow
The next morning appeared to be a beautiful hiking day and we were excited to meet the famous forest professors couple Laura and Olivier Bouriaud
we went off to pick up a local forester from ROMSILVA as seventh companion
He is an active forest manager in the Suceava forest district and knows his way through the vast Carpathian forests
when we realised how essential it was to be guided around by someone with the knowledge and skills for wandering around
Around 40% of Romanian forests are FSC-certified
which means that wood is harvested in a sustainable manner in these areas
respecting wildlife and other ecosystem services
We visited a recently thinned certified forest stand
with imposing spruce trees on fertile calcareous soils
Gaps that were created earlier by selective thinning or smaller clear-cuts were quickly claimed by regeneration from primarily spruce
but also gave way to species like Paris quadrifolia
which is in decline in Europe due to loss of habitat and might soon be on red lists
What we saw in this forest stand very much contrasted with the harsh media stories
the volume of removed wood and the exact planning
We walked through the stand discussing the measures and the related communication to stakeholders
The other side of the spectrum – and of our exploration of Romanian forests – was formed by our visit to the Codrul Secular Slătioara Forest Reserve
This reserve is under strict protection but is still open for visitors to enjoy the tranquillity of the ancient forest and admire the rugged landscape
stretching over 600 hectares with trees exceeding 50 meters of height
but the slippery rocks and steep slope made for a spectacular hike not without risks
We pulled each other upwards and managed to get on top of the canyon
There we rested on the remains of a large beech tree
looking down on the trail and wondering how we were supposed to get back
After a few minutes we were urged to get back on our feet and follow our guide
as he still had some unique viewpoints that he wanted to show us
clutching the stems and branches from large beech trees for support
we reached a ridge that pointed out above the canopy
Here we had a great and rather humbling view on the surrounding forest area and the outskirts of the Slatioara town
After this highlight and catching our breath
The first few meters were so steep that we agreed to slide down from a seated position
until we were able to stand up again and walk carefully over the old trail
We descended to the creek running through the reserve
where we washed our hands and drank some ice-cold water
Laura and Olivier took us to their home for a fantastic BBQ
after which we returned to our hotel for a well-deserved rest
we were invited to give a lecture about our work and projects on the Ştefan cel Mare University of Suceava
Silke presented the SUPERB project to an enthusiastic group of students from the forestry department
Gert-Jan backed that up with a lecture on his IPCC work
while Sara and Bas spoke about their projects related to climate smart forestry
After an interesting discussion with the audience
it was time for us to leave the university and prepare for our return journey to the Netherlands with our own impressions of the Romanian forests or at least part of it

or by the consolation brought in the philanthropic settlements established by the Church and placed under its care.’
