The PUMA Speedcat is trending – we’ve seen the sneaker topping the Lyst Index as the 3rd hottest sneaker of Q3 2024. What do you personally think is so cool about this style?
The PUMA Speedcat has now been officially launched globally after being available in limited capacities. What does this mean for PUMA in terms of market strategy and brand presence?
Can you share some figures regarding the Speedcat’s expected performance? What have we reached so far? What are PUMA’s targets for this sneaker?
Lionel: In the select space, it’s tricky to provide exact figures, but we know that Speedcat quickly entered the top rankings with our key customers, becoming one of our best-selling products. Based on this, we anticipate Speedcat will soon be one of the best sellers in the whole marketplace, which has also been confirmed by our early data from the US launch.
Initially, we thought Speedcat would be strongly led by women, but we’ve seen a more balanced split, with 60% of sales coming from women and 40% by men rather than the 80-20 split we anticipated. So, this shift means the opportunity for us is much bigger than we initially thought.
This is really interesting! How can we measure that we are in the top rankings?
Lionel: It’s based on data. We measure our top rankings through our key industry partner, Circana, which collects sales information from most retailers. They define market shares and top sellers. Additionally, we have strong relationships with major partners like Footlocker, JD, Snipes, and department stores, giving us access to their top sales data as well. This helps us know if we’re in the top rankings.
With Speedcat, we hope to enter the top rankings quickly. The global launch was on December 5th, and we’ve all been eagerly waiting for this moment. It’s expected to drive interest for Christmas and the coming months. We’ll have drops in December, February, and additional colors in March and April. Time will tell, but we’re optimistic about our position.
I see, so all all the drop dates are planned very strategicly!
Lionel: Yes, all the dates and moments are strategic for both product and marketing. This is crucial for our go-to-market journey.
When and how did you identify that low-profile sneakers would become a major trend?
Lionel: The fashion and sports industries can be very subjective, but I’ll focus on the facts. When I took over the Sportstyle BU 18 months ago, Gregor Abenstein, our Senior Director Select, his team and I, we started discussions with the Korean team. Korea is a trendsetter globally, especially through K-pop, K-music, K-food, and K-beauty.
Eighteen months ago, our global select team and Korean teams noticed the resurgence of low-profile sneakers. They worked together to define the best way to respond to this trend and claim our place in the market. We quickly identified Speedcat as the best opportunity.
I want to take the opportunity to thank the Korean team for their insights and all the product, go-to-market, and marketing teams for their hard work. The success of the Speedcat is due to their great plan and collaboration. And for me, this is a benchmark for teamwork.
The key is PUMA's willingness to create trends rather than follow them, and the necessity to bring something authentic to us, which brings me back to the first question, the Speedcat is cool because it's so true to PUMA. You won't find any other product like it; you can't copy it.
How do current trends in accessories and apparel silhouettes contribute to the success of the Speedcat? What other trends are you observing in the market right now?
Regarding other trends, we see court classics and progressive technologies like vis-tech – visible tech – rising and running in general. Our products in these areas will benefit from the halo effect created by Speedcat too.
How does the PUMA Speedcat fit into PUMA’s overall brand elevation strategy?
Lionel: That’s a great question. It’s about balancing all the elements of the mix. First, the product is right— premium suede material and Ortholite sock for comfort in a low-profile silhouette. The price is right at €110, slightly above our usual points, which helps elevating the brand. We’re working with the best distribution plan to be in the right place at the right time.
Most importantly, we ensure consumers want to wear PUMA. Our strong influencer strategy, developed by our global and local marketing teams, has been key.
Brand elevation comes from building franchises as brands. The Speedcat isn’t just a product; it’s a brand. The campaigns with Dua Lipa and Rosie show how strong the name is.
This also goes back to our strategy of focusing on fewer products but doing them very well. The entire consumer journey, from seeing Speedcat to buying and wearing it, is crucial. I’ve heard from accounts that Speedcat is in fact a best practice in go-to-market strategy, with the right colors, quantities, distribution, and marketing. We’re very optimistic that this journey will lead to strong sales in the coming months.
Our best ambassadors: PUMA employees sharing how they style their favorite pair of Speedcats!
So, would it be possible to replicate that best practice for future products?
Lionel: In our industry, you don’t have a crystal ball, so you never know. I’ve been in the industry for 20 years, and there are no rules. One day you duplicate something, and it works; the next day, it doesn’t. So, we need to trust the experts.
Our product people are very talented, as are our marketing and sales teams. They know what to do and how to read the market. I trust their expertise more than just duplicating a plan from one product to another.
I can’t be more honest when I say the reason why it’s working and why it’s cool is because of our people. They did the job, and we have very good people internally. That’s why I’m confident not only for Speedcat but also for what’s coming in the next months and future seasons.
What are the next steps for the Speedcat? Are there any upcoming iterations or special editions that you are particularly excited about?
Lionel: We product people are always excited to bring more. For the next month, we’ll focus on a limited number of colors to keep the momentum going for the next 4-5 months. As of Q2 next year, we’ll add color updates, material updates, and general execution updates to keep interest high.
In select, we’ll maintain high interest with strong partners coming up also next month. I can’t reveal more, but they’ll support Speedcat and keep it hot, balancing brand heat and commercialization. And especially for women, we’re working on franchise extensions like Speedcat Ballerina, Speedcat Ballet, and Speedcat Go, launching in spring/summer next year.
We’re confident we’re bringing the right level of newness to maintain interest. Speedcat is a key pillar of our strategy, opening doors for more to come in the next few weeks.

Sports company PUMA has appointed Lionel Telega (43) as the new General Manager of the Business Unit Sportstyle with immediate effect
has been with PUMA since 2004 and most recently worked as Global Director Go-To-Market
He takes over the role of General Manager BU Sportstyle from Maria Valdes
who became Chief Product Officer and a Member of the Board of Management in January 2023
“We are fully convinced that Lionel’s strong commercial background and valuable experience will contribute to further enhance Sportstyle as our largest growing Business Unit,” said PUMA CPO Maria Valdes
“I wish him all the best in his new position.”
The Lincoln County News
Serving Maine and Lincoln County for over 140 years
Rebecca Telega is the new marketing and membership coordinator at the Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce
The new marketing and membership coordinator at the Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce aims to connect with members and help inject new energy into the chamber
becoming the first full-time employee of the chamber since the resignation of Executive Director Stephanie Gallagher in October 2018
Telega’s hiring is part of an effort to rebrand and reenergize the chamber that includes a new logo
Much of Telega’s focus will be on social media and outreach to both existing members and potential new ones
president of the chamber’s board of directors
he believes the chamber found the right candidate
“We’re excited to have her on board and look forward to the renewed energy for the businesses in the area,” Roberts said of Telega
holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Thomas College in Waterville and has past experience with a chamber of commerce
she had a work-study position with the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce
“Basically what I was doing was updating the events calendar
and just being that greeter and administrative assistant-type person
Telega next scored an internship with the Maine Republican Party
She proceeded to work on various Republican campaigns over the next five years
Paul LePage’s 2014 reelection campaign and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign
said she saw the chamber’s help wanted ad in The Lincoln County News and thought the job looked like a perfect fit
“Lincoln County has always had a special place in my heart and I absolutely love seeing all the new businesses pop up,” she said
“Watching the community members interact with one another is something that really
and it makes me want to be a part of that and be a resource for them to connect and come together and make things happen.”
She said her background and experience with social media promotion and volunteer management also made her feel she could excel as the chamber’s marketing and membership coordinator
“I am excited about this opportunity because it’s a mixture of what I was doing in the past as well as a little bit of new stuff,” she said
The first major task for Telega in her new position was helping to set up and successfully execute the chamber’s annual meeting May 17
She was proud of how the event turned out
The food was really good and as I looked around the room
That really just made me realize that I was where I was supposed to be,” Telega said
Next on the horizon is a lunch-and-learn event that will focus on showing members how to make the most out of their chamber membership
Telega put together an email reminder and planned to call members to remind them about the event
I want to put the time in my schedule to personally call the members or visit the members to let them know that these events are happening,” Telega said
Telega is also in charge of the chamber’s biweekly newsletter
She includes various events and promotions from member businesses in the email
of any type of event that they have going on throughout the region
so I can place that in the newsletter,” Telega said
Telega said her favorite part of the job so far has been having conversations with chamber members
She looks forward to doing much more of that after the board’s next meeting on June 7
as soon as we finish up this board meeting
getting out there and meeting our members and asking them what they would like to see us do,” Telega said
Eventually she wants to take the time to personally call or visit each of the 261 establishments that belong to the chamber
“I really like watching the business owners that have been here in the area for so long be so welcoming
They are very welcoming and very supportive
and that is something you don’t see across the whole state,” said Telega

The following letter was sent to the Amherst Town Council on February 26
I am writing to ask for your help in reopening the Take It or Leave It (TILI) tables at the Town Transfer Station
I believe the TILI area is a real part of our town’s uniqueness
when the landfill/transfer station was opened after the previous landfill site was closed
It serves (along with the Book Shed) as a place for residents (who purchase a yearly “sticker”-currently $100.00) to leave household items that others might take if they find them useful
It has also been a place for residents to meet
discuss town affairs and gather signatures for nomination papers and petitions
It was closed 2 years ago as part of the response to the pandemic
Steve Telega is the manager of the Transfer Station and has shared with me some of his concerns about the TILI area and why he would prefer not to reopen it
I believe his concerns are real and can and should be addressed
I would be willing to be part of a group that meets to resolve these issues so that this special place can be reopened
Norman BrownNorman Brown is a resident of Amherst
I would be more than willing to be part of a group to discuss this as well
but it should not make work for a lot of other people in the process

Joseph David has treated patients at his private practice in Mt
Clair and University of Pittsburgh graduate opened his physical therapy and sports medicine center on Castle Shannon Boulevard in 1994
Joe David (far right) looks over the building of his physical therapy facility while his two young sons
Jeremy graduated from Virginia Tech with a business and marketing degree then earned his doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh
He has worked with his father now for three years

“Oh my,” Paul Telega thought when Joe David was assigned to be his lab partner as the two prepared for their careers in physical therapy
Both attended the University of Pittsburgh in the1980s and eventually earned their doctorate degrees
a standout on the Panthers’ basketball team
“All I could think of was I got to work on this guy?” Telega said of the manipulations
stretching exercises and other lessons each had to perform on the other during classes
you are going to have to deal with it because you’re going to be working (professionally) on all kinds of shapes and sizes,” Telega said of the conversation
You could tell that he would be a great physical therapist.”
David has served the South Hills and Pittsburgh as one of its premier therapists
he celebrated 25 years of private practice after opening the David Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center in Mt
He has direct hands in here and is very involved in people’s lives,” said Telega
a person is more than a broken bone or a torn ligament
That has always been David’s goal since entering the profession
when he excelled at basketball for Upper St
David became interested in the medical profession
was one reason why he accepted a scholarship to play for Pitt
Mulling over a chance to play basketball in Europe
David settled on physical therapy upon the suggestion of his athletic trainer
‘you ought to think about physical therapy,’ and in my infinite wisdom
‘what’s physical therapy?’ Once he explained it to me
I really felt it was something that really clicked with me because I wanted a good quality life
I did not want to be at the beck and call of people in the middle of the night and things of that nature
“I have no regrets whatsoever about not being a (medical) doctor
but it’s actually been a blessing in disguise because I love what I do.”
David served as the director at the South Hills Sports Medicine Clinic
located on Vanadium Road and owned by a physicians group
He also was the director of physical therapy for the visiting nurses association of Allegheny County
His practice began in a small space on Cochran Road before he built the facility on Castle Shannon Boulevard in 1997
Before his staff blossomed to 15 employees
do the billing and transcriptions all while treating patients
Starting a business was even more complicated as David was both a newlywed and a young father
She is now a member of the University of Pittsburgh’s dance team
“I wouldn’t trade those days for the world,” David said
David did not enjoy hearing discouraging words from his colleagues
They said it was a “bad time” to go into private practice because Universal Health Care was on the horizon
especially when everybody was telling me not to do this
but I knew I had to take that chance because it’s my personality
David’s physical therapy and sports medicine center has treated “thousands of thousands of people” in southwestern Pennsylvania
David has managed the care and recovery of such prominent people as two-time Olympic gold-medalist Suzie McConnell-Serio
former Chicago Cub third baseman Kevin Orie
former Pittsburgh Pirates like Steve Blass and Dave Giusti
and announcers such as Myron Cope and Ron Jaye as well as some Pittsburgh Penguins and other professional athletes from visiting teams
He has also treated actors and actresses and even had his own trailer on the sets of motion pictures being filmed in the region
Jones back to making her sauce as much as I am getting those guys back on the field
but there is a little more pressure with those guys because they make a lot more money
and you want to make sure you get those guys better,” he admitted
That person that you are treating is a celebrity to somebody
started working part-time in the practice in 1997 and gradually built up to full-time by 2000
noting how David came to the hospital and prayed with him when his father was sick and dying
“He provides excellent care for his patients.”
The 53-year-old Peters Township resident started working with David at South Hills Sports Medicine in 1989
who was “looking for a change” at the time
and it’s nice when we are all working well together
It’s nice to see when everybody is all at the top of their game
The teamwork and making patients a priority and trying to make sure the people are well-taken care of all of the time and not neglected or left along
The best thing about working here is hearing patients say that they had a good experience.”
The past three years have been a great experience for David because his son
the 27-year-old Scott Township resident earned a marketing and business finance degree from Virginia Tech before attending physical therapy school at the University of Pittsburgh
Better than I could have imagined,” said Jeremy
I wanted to learn from him because who better to do that with than someone who has the most successful private practice in the South Hills
“I feel weird saying this because he is my dad
I get to see it everyday and how he interacts with patients and how kind good-hearted he is and how much he cares for people
He cares for every one of those players that come through.”
David has served as the basketball coach at Mt
three WPIAL championships and one PIAA runner-up title
both of whom went on to play at the Division I level
Both are in the process of becoming physical therapists
Justin will be joining the practice in May
“it really isn’t my dream to have all my children working with me
is that they do things that make them happy
Noting all three siblings and their sister get along “wonderfully,” Dr
David admits a goal for sure would be to “maybe let them run the place” once retires
This is something that I could do until I’m pretty old because I haven’t found that one thing to occupy my time.”
When he is not at the rehab center or coaching the Blue Devils boys basketball team
David instructs at the NCAA College Basketball Academy
The developmental program gives prospective student-athletes a sample of the college basketball experience
David works at Tim Grgurich’s NBA Camps during the summer
“Physical therapy and basketball are my passions
But David also finds time to maintain his fitness level
His go-to piece of equipment is the elliptical machine
where he will spend 50 minutes on the strider at a Level 8 pace
Every workout that is documented to the step and regards to how he felt during the session
Our vacations are built around hotels that have those machines
and my kids know that not until I get off that elliptical can I or them relax.”
If David does overdo it and needs physical therapy
works at the facility and is his “right arm” as he trained under him at South Hills before going to physical therapy school
David enjoys the relationships he develops with his patients
He takes pride in seeing them get back on their feet
It could be a new patient with a unique personality
every day when you walk in and try to make their lives better and improve their lives
Or get them on a bike and ride without pain
David says that most people tell him they enjoyed their therapy sessions and they had a great time but
but the joys of my business are that I do get to see people and spend time with them
Where else am I able to sit down and talk to people and get to know them
and I will spend six weeks with them and listen to their stories and learn about their families and concerns
We want to get them back as quickly as possible to doing what they do
We are going to do the best we possibly can
It won’t be for lack of effort or lack of thought that you don’t get better.”
Telega agrees that David exhausts all efforts
That’s one reason why the rehab center is always busy
People who have been to other places and come here say it’s not like this everywhere else
or I’m recommending this place to my friends.”
“When you see them at the supermarket or on the streets
or I can move my arm,’ then you can see how your work has paid off
we don’t want you to get hurt in the first place
“Our philosophy is always the patients are first
You care for them just like you would a family member
They are in pain and you want to help that person
For those resolution-makers embarking on fitness and weight-loss goals
Joseph David and his employees at David Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Center offer some helpful hints
both recommend adopting the approach employed by the tortoise in beating the hare in Aesop’s Fable
“Don’t be too ambitious and don’t make goals too ambiguous,” said Jeremy
Start small and let it blossom into something bigger.”
He suggested that instead of going to the gym for an hour shoot for 10 to 15 minutes
David agreed because he says that will leave the person thirsting for more
He cited a female patient that recently lost 150 pounds by heeding his suggestions of starting slowly
Little by little she increased her workouts to the point that now she loves going to the gym
“you should enjoy what you are doing and whatever it is that you decide to do
But you want to make sure that you have a good time and enjoy every minute of what you do
If you don’t do that then usually you will push too hard
David used the example of the novice who hopes on a bike and rides for three hours on a welcoming warm day
He noted how someone who has never ridden before for that distance would get off the bike with a sore “butt” and aching leg muscles
“Your motivation to get back on that bike is no longer there,” he said
“but if you gradually worked into it and built up a tolerance for it
then you aren’t doing it for a while or a long time.”
David also said that people need to be “compassionate” with themselves
Gradually working into an activity and enjoying it will not only improve fitness it will also “cut down” on injuries
recommends being “reasonable” in your approach because then you will be more likely to stick with a program over the long term
“You need to keep in mind your age and your fitness level,” he said
“Seek advice from people who are experienced in fitness.” Above all
“don’t quit when you are just tired and don’t feel like doing it anymore.”
“Sometimes you just need to change things up,” Dr
Not only do you keep your body healthy that way you also break up the monotony of doing the same things all the time.”
Any time individuals embark on a lifestyle change that includes exercise
While soreness from underused muscles can be expected
David said that remaining active and being smart are the first steps anyone can take in staying injury free
He said that one shouldn’t always try pushing himself to the next level
“People start working out and that’s wonderful but then they want to lift 30 pounds and then 40 and 50 and 60 and by the time they hit 70
“So there is a certain point when you are going to have to take it easy and exercise and keep your muscles strong but you don’t have to keep pushing beyond the your limits.”
He said to “listen to your body” because it doesn’t send pain signals for no reason
‘what have I done’ or ‘what am I doing to cause this?’ and not just pop an Advil and keep on going because sooner or later you will end up coming to me.”
Paul Telega recommends a tried and true formula to preventing injuries and staying out of the physical therapy cycle
He went to physical therapy school at the University of Pittsburgh with Dr
David and has worked with him since he opened his facility 25 years ago
In addition to sleep “because you need your rest” and drinking lots of water
Telega advises finding something that you love to do and tap your soul
“You need to find something that you are passionate about because that doesn’t make it like work then and you need to find a spiritual thing as well because we are not alone
You need friends and family for support and you need a little spiritual guidance.”
While additional tips and guidance can be found at davidphysicaltherapy.com
the Davids continue to preach that slow and steady wins the race
“Everybody wants instant gratification but it doesn’t happen that way,” said Dr
“So I think it’s managing expectations and making sure you understand that this process is going to pay dividends down the road and not only
when we talk about strength and range of motion
we can’t see your respiratory system or your cardiovascular system
This is going to be wonderful benefit to exercise
the season poses particular hazards for those negotiating slippery slopes
Whether they be at ski resorts like Seven Springs or just outside the front door on icy steps and driveways
David Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Center offer these helpful hints for staying safe and out of emergency rooms
which in turn eventually land patients in physical therapy
rehab facilities see a spike during the early spring because that’s when patients have recovered from broken bones caused from spills on the ice or falls from skiing
in four weeks physical therapy businesses will be booming
“It only takes a second to have an accident but it takes many weeks
sometimes months to recover,” said Joe Wolk
who has worked at David’s center for more than 20 years
Don’t be in a hurry and always be aware of your surroundings.”
He notes that everybody has experienced that ice that cannot be seen so that when you walk outside you need to be extra careful
“Don’t try to lift too much and bend at the knees,” he recommended
“If it’s too much snow out there and you think that this might be too daunting a task
If it’s too cold and it’s a lot of snow and you are worried about your health go out for a few minutes
There’s no point in overdoing it and no shame in breaking it up.”
He said anybody dealing with the winter elements should wear warm clothes and good shoes outdoors
“If I am a little old lady and not used to getting out
then I may not want to go out because I am not used to it
If you do venture outside and disaster happens
then David Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Center gets two thumbs as the place for recovery

Doftana Penitentiary, dubbed the “Bastille of Romania,” is among the most enticing of the country’s ruins
and three wings had cells with no natural light whatsoever—these were reserved for those sentenced to more severe punishments
fascists and communists were jailed within the complex alongside petty criminals
communists used to write articles on toilet paper
swing them on a wire from one cell to the other
and smuggle them out for a weekly leaflet that would then be distributed among factory and railroad workers
Among the future communist leaders serving sentences within the prison were Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and Nicolae Ceaușescu
Both would eventually rule Romania: Gheorghiu-Dej from 1948 through 1965 and Ceaușescu 1965 through 1989
Gheorghiu-Dej transformed the prison into a museum for propaganda reasons
using it to show the entire nation where the bourgeois regime used to lock up those who fought for the rights of proletarians. A miniature of the compound was placed in the first hall at the entrance
statues of Dej and later of Ceaușescu were on exhibition
and the cell of the latter could be seen preserved as it had appeared 30 years before
and soldiers arrived here every day on a continuous pilgrimage
This prison was chosen because of the scenery and imposing structure
and Ceaușescu had only been there for petty crime in his youth
awaiting his penalty before he was sent away
the museum was abandoned and left to decay
water leaks have begun to chip away at floors and walls
The miniature of the compound and the statues have been smashed beyond recognition
probably as payback after 45 years of poverty and terror
Plans to sell the old prison to a real estate developer or a hotel operator have failed
and the fate of the building is now uncertain
The building is not officially open for tours and it is dangerous to visit without proper protective equipment
so you must stick to admiring it from the outside
Mexico's largest collection of masks is found in the ruins of an abandoned convent
This maximum-security prison was abandoned to make way for a national park
The ruins of a Massachusetts prison farm can still be found crumbling the woods of a state park
World's first "penitentiary," meant to be humane
This abandoned prison is now a museum chronicling the oppression of political prisoners in the not-so-distant past

Russian journalist Konstantin Dolgov said on Thursday that he had been fired from his job at a pro-Kremlin outlet following his lengthy interview with Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin
a blogger who also identifies himself as a political consultant and media technologist
said he was told his termination was related to the interview
During Dolgov's interview, Prigozhin harshly criticized Russia's top military officials—especially Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu—and said that Moscow's plans to "demilitarize" Ukraine had not only failed but Russia had "turned Ukraine's army into one of the most powerful in the world."
After Russia's formal military suffered multiple battlefield defeats in Ukraine
Prigozhin's mercenary troops began turning the tide somewhat for Russia in the latter months of 2022
Among Prigozhin's triumphs in Ukraine was Russia's victory in Soledar
but he later became angry after the Kremlin didn't properly credit his men for taking the Ukrainian city
who was once said to be supportive of Prigozhin
Dolgov's 77-minute interview with Prigozhin was shared on both men's Telegram channels Tuesday night
The talk soon made international headlines for Prigozhin's critique of how Moscow is conducting the war
as well as for his claim that 20,000 Wagner mercenaries—half of whom he said were recruited from prisons—have been killed in Ukraine
Dolgov said he learned he was fired from his position at Telega Online
the morning after the interview was posted
"I was fired for an interview with Prigozhin," Dolgov wrote Thursday
the senior producer of the Telega Online streaming show informed me that the project no longer needed my services...And they said in plain text: I was fired because of the interview with Prigozhin."
He said that producers at Telega told him that the decision to dismiss him "was made after calls 'from above.'"
"Who is who on top—I do not know and do not want to know," he said
Newsweek reached out to Telega Online via Telegram for comment
Dolgov also wrote of freedom of speech in Russia and said he did not think Putin would approve of his firing
"I don't think that Vladimir Putin will be happy to learn that the presenter of Telega Online was fired for an interview with the triumphant Bakmhut [commander] and the Hero of the Russian Federation," Dolgov said
and I am sure that he is a principled opponent of any lawlessness
There is nothing to fire me for...You step on the throat of your own song
Telega Online later pushed back against Dolgov's claims in a message posted on its Telegram Channel
The note said that Dolgov's departure from the company was "not at all as spontaneous as he claims" and that he didn't renew an employment contract that had expired in April
Telega also wrote that the company considers Dolgov's "accusations of bias and biased editorial policy" to be "inappropriate."
a political adviser on post-Soviet and international politics
told Newsweek that "the firing of the pro-Kremlin journalist who interviewed Prigozhin is a telling sign that the Kremlin's anger with Prigozhin is real."
"The Wagner Boss' emotional appeal to the Russian military leadership—to urgently change course before Russia's invasion of Ukraine fails
something that could cause Russia to collapse—is striking too close to home and is posing a significant threat to Russian state security," Smart said
Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground

Telegram has become one of the main platforms for the spread of Russian propaganda and disinformation – primarily due to the lack of censorship and weak content moderation
Although this service is popular mainly in Ukraine and the Russian Federation
pro-Russian channels that broadcast narratives favorable to the Kremlin are waiting for foreigners in Telegram
Civil Network OPORA investigated pro-Russian Telegram channels that work for the Western audience and the connections between them
According to the results of a study commissioned by OPORA
Telegram is the most popular source of information for Ukrainians – 71.3% of respondents use it to read news
This messenger has overtaken all other social networks and even television in terms of popularity
one of the main problems of Telegram is that it hardly moderates content
the local authorities of the occupied territories
“military correspondents” and journalists
whom other social networks are trying to block
Sometimes mouthpieces of Russian propaganda even disguise themselves as Ukrainian news resources
The activities of propagandists also extend to the international audience
Despite the fact that Telegram is not very actively used abroad
it remains a platform for finding like-minded people and forming communities among the minority who adhere to “unofficial” views on the modern world order
The 50 largest pro-Russian foreign language Telegram channels became the basis of the research base
The next step was to analyze messages published there from January 1 to April 30
2023 and reposts from other channels that spread Russian narratives to a foreign audience
This process was repeated several times until the author recreated an extensive network of interconnected channels
We have found a total of 1,005 pro-Russian media
which distribute content in various languages
the main attention in this article will be paid to the Telegram resources that publish posts in English and Italian – there were the most of them
English-language channels are mostly focused on North America
but some of them address their content to Europe
Italian-language channels are expected to work for users from Italy
A total of 1,005 pro-Russian media were found
but some of them direct their content to Europe
These Telegram channels began to appear actively in October-March 2021-2022 – before the start and in the first months of the full-scale invasion
there was also a big jump in November-January 2021
when former US President Donald Trump was blocked on Twitter
A noticeable increase in the number of Telegram channels also took place in October 2022
when the Russian Federation began actively shelling the critical infrastructure of Ukrainian cities
this is how the Russians tried to justify their army in the eyes of the Western audience
See: Dynamics of Telegram channels creation
not all Telegram channels that we found are equally popular
the reach of English-language channels is at least five times higher than that of Italian-language channels
the Disclose.tv channel is the most popular
the former national security adviser of former US President Donald Trump
Flynn is known for his anti-Ukrainian stance and fondness for conspiracy theories
he recently stated that Putin’s invasion allegedly disrupted the plans of the “new world order”
See: The number of subscribers to pro-Russian Telegram channels
The graph below shows which of the channels the audience has read the most since the beginning of 2023
the author calculated the arithmetic average of the number of views on each message for the period under study
The top ten most popular channels included news resources
It should be added that the reach of the channel does not always correlate with the number of subscribers
General Flynn has the second most followers
This means that his readers are inactive and probably were created by bot farms
See: Top-10 Telegram channels by coverage
The Russian military news aggregator “Intel Slava Z”
Its administrators publish news and pseudo-analytics aimed at the Western audience
but the channel itself is most likely run by Russians – at the beginning of the channel’s existence
it published news about protests in France and the war in Iran
the channel was called “Intel Slava”
and the letter “Z” was added to the name already after a full-scale invasion
The channel has been publishing anti-Ukrainian content for a long time
The first messages with references to Ukraine appeared a few years after the creation of the channel
They inform about the situation with COVID-19 in our state in a mocking tone:
The previously mentioned German news resource “Disclose.tv” is in second place in terms of popularity
the media’s team tries to hide its German origin
Disclose.tv now positions itself as a reliable source of news
but the channel began as a forum devoted to conspiracy theories and UFOs
The published news often lacks references and citations
there is a constant anti-vaccination narrative
and recently the channel was accused of hate speech and Holocaust denial
News from the channel is distributed by far right and conspiracy channels
“ULTRA Pepe Lives Matter” is rounding out the top three channels
It was created in 2021 in the midst of the US presidential campaign and after Trump was blocked on other social networks
Publications supporting Russian offensive actions appear on the channel
its authors promote conspiracy theories and the QAnon movement – one of the initiators of the infamous storming of the Capitol
the first mentions of Ukraine began to appear on the channel
the authors claimed that the reasons for the war were unclear
and that the current US administration was hiding something from citizens
The authors of the channel have repeatedly emphasized that they do not understand why American officials support Ukraine
and looked for reasons to support the hidden secrets and conspiracies of the “global government”
Forwarded messages from other pro-QAnon channels often appear on the resource
They also publish identical texts or refer to each other
All these channels can be conditionally divided into two groups
Some of the resources engage in propaganda openly and cover the war from the Russian point of view
These are English- or Italian-language channels of Russian “military correspondents” or foreign “journalists” and even official channels of the Russian media
An example is “Donbass Devushka”
a pro-Russian channel that publishes news about the war
and its description even states that it conducts “Russian-style information warfare”
the leaked Pentagon documents were distributed by “Donbass Devushka”
do not openly declare their pro-Russian position and disguise themselves as Western media or socio-political movements or organizations
the Italian AASIB.ORG channel is run on behalf of the organization of the same name
which allegedly helps children in the Russian Federation and in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories
this organization tells the Italians about Ukraine’s alleged war crimes against children and actively spreads other Russian disinformation
“Both hands of the 16-year-old girl were torn off
This is a consequence of the barbaric shooting by Ukrainian nationalists of a temporary reception point for refugees in the Kherson region
with the Western “peaceful” weapons...”
“L’AntiDiplomatico” (“The Anti-Diplomat”) is an ordinary Italian political news resource
The media nowhere indicates that it supports the Russian Federation and the war against Ukraine
The website of the resource mentions that it is “one of the standard voices of the multipolar world
which has established itself on the bloody unilateralism led by the United States”
which is already reminiscent of the main narratives of the Kremlin
the messages broadcast by the channel’s authors contain both propaganda and disinformation
The official website of the media contains articles about the “fascist Kyiv regime” and criticism of Volodymyr Zelenskyi
Channels like L’AntiDiplomatico and AASIB.ORG cloak themselves in claims of “real journalism” and “the search for truth”
These resources claim that “not everything is so clear-cut”
the vast majority of them adhere to conservative Christian views on the family
The channels often feature posts against the ensuring and expanding rights of the LGBTQ community
The authors also criticize the implementation of modern sex education in schools
Almost all English-language channels support former US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party
They publish Trump’s quotes from his speeches – for example
about the image of God and biblical stories
Most of these channels are conspiratorial – they believe in an evil conspiracy of political elites
Their authors spread narratives that the coronavirus was invented by Bill Gates in a secret laboratory
and that the US government specifically blew up the twin towers on September 11
After the beginning of the full-scale invasion
these channels proved the presence of biolaboratories in Ukraine and supported the war
They believe that the Russian government knew about bioweapons and thus tried to stop the further development of the pandemic
but an attempt by global elites to subjugate humanity
conservatism and a distorted view of Christian values are characteristic not only of foreign-language telegram channels
the official Russian media supported and spread similar conspiracy narratives – for example
about the already mentioned US biolaboratories in Ukraine
politicians and journalists have been spreading delusions about biolaboratories since around 2007
the Kremlin argued for the invasion of Ukraine and emphasized that Russia is not attacking but defending itself
Russia even changed its own concept of foreign policy
adding to it a clause about the need to investigate the presence of biolaboratories in the neighboring states
Another well-known fiction of Russian politicians is the idea of the golden billion (a conspiracy theory that the world is ruled by a privileged group of people)
which the government has been feeding its citizens for decades
the authorities are trying to justify the outbreak of the war by the eternal efforts of Western politicians to implement this theory
and thereby restrain the development of the Russian Federation
many of the Telegram channels we discovered refer to each other or use shared texts
We divided all these channels into three language groups (English-speaking
Italian-speaking and Russian-speaking) and investigated the connections between them
the groups appear as three separate nodes of different colors
Details: Network of pro-Russian Telegram channels
There are several channels between the English and Russian groups that connect them
These are resources that both groups refer to
They create a peculiar path from one language group to another
the channel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation
which is popular among all propaganda resources
Italian-language channels and Russian-language channels are connected
by the channel of the Russian Embassy in Italy
They repost it to inform and confirm some official information
If on the Russian side the Russian Embassy in Italy often refers to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (on the graph they are connected by a line that illustrates their connection)
then in the Italian node the embassy is most often referred to by pro-Russian news resources – for example
the “Bologna Anti-Fascist Ukrainian Committee” (“Comitato Ucraina Antifascista Bologna”) and “LR
but the Italian-language media forwards news from the embassy channel to confirm their own assumptions and share “official” information with their audience
At the beginning of the research (before the data cleaning stage)
as well as ordinary Italian or English media
were among the entire array of found channels
this may be due to the fact that there are many more channels in Russian language than in Ukrainian
Another possible explanation is that pro-Russian resources hardly refer to pro-Ukrainian media and vice versa
all the found channels are tied into a common node of mutual references
“breakthrough” there quite rarely
Given the shortcomings of the chosen methodological approach
we can assume that certain pro-Russian channels were not included in the database
the data collected and presented in the study are sufficient to delineate the interconnections between the channels and identify the narratives shared by them all
Each English- or Italian-language channel included in the network is informationally connected with Russian propaganda media
and channels of official state institutions of the Russian Federation through mutual forwarding of messages
Russians use the channels of their official institutions to spread (dis)information to foreigners and Russians abroad
All found channels have some other common features
Most of them were created in the same time frames – in the winter of 2021 and 2022 (the US presidential election and the start of a full-scale invasion
The existence of such telegram channels is harmful to our state
Together with similar information sources in other social networks
spoiling the international image of Ukraine
and trying to reduce military aid to our state
they create an information noise that forces one to get lost between facts and fiction
as was once the case with the downing of the MH17 plane near Donetsk
Given the fact that Russia is carrying out information warfare
there may be more and more such channels over time
It is also important that the disinformation campaign continues even in those social networks that seem unpopular in the West
two possible “truths” and the illusion that “not everything is so clear-cut” are created in the mind of the audience
This illusion makes people hesitate: who is really to blame for the war
Ukraine needs to create and distribute its own information resources
continue to talk about the real causes of the war and show the true face of Russia to the Western world
