triathletes came from all over the country to participate in the 2024 Cranberry Trifest Triathlon held at Ted Williams Camp in Lakeville on Sunday
Athletes started off the morning with a swim in Loon Pond
then pedaled along a route that snaked through Lakeville
Rochester and Freetown and finished the day with a run through the neighborhoods surrounding Ted Williams Camp
The races included a Sprint distance triathlon
Athletes also had the option to participate in a “splash and dash” event
or an “aquabike,” which included just the swim and bike portions
Sprint triathlon participant Melanie Diamanti conquered the final meters of the race in style
flexing the muscles of her herculean arms as she crossed the finish line
Evidenced by the gesture she made as she passed beneath the inflatable arc marking the competition’s end
finished third overall in the Sprint triathlon with a time of 1:29:22
Labriola noted how she loved how fast and flat the bike route was
adding that “any day you can get out of bed and do a triathlon,” is a good day
The key to getting that third podium spot for her was focusing on the present
This was the second year Lakeville resident David Lamoureux did the race after a 10-year hiatus from endurance competition
who completed the Olympic course in just over 2 hours
said that when the going gets tough during a competition
The regret is worse than the pain [you experience] while you’re doing it.”

and their supporters around the nation rallied around an important cause: encouraging the multiple sclerosis (MS) community

funds raised from this event help advance the research of Brian J
scientific director of MS and Neuroimmunology and the William Frederick Windle Professor of Neurology at Feinberg
MS is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system and the most common chronic neurological disorder to affect young adults

The generous funding from the Rampy MS Research Foundation has facilitated all aspects of Dr
access to state-of-the-art technologies and equipment
and conference attendance for scientists in the Popko Laboratory
“The Rampy funds have been a great resource for furthering our MS research efforts
the enthusiasm and commitment of the triathlon organizers and participants for the cause of MS research have been inspiring,” shared Dr
Trifest for MS is hailed as one of the top five triathlons in the nation by Triathlon Business International and was initially inspired by Scott and Jo Rampy
president and CEO (chief encouragement officer) of the Rampy MS Research Foundation
it became a community event that has now brought together thousands of triathletes and encouragers over the years
and competition with a family atmosphere where participants of all ages and fitness levels (kids ages 5-18
and para-athletes) can compete in four different events
Rampy tells the triathletes: “Today all of you will cross the finish line
Our research doctors’ finish line is ahead of them and not in sight until a cure is upon them—you are helping them today to reach their finish line.”

The inaugural Digicel Bermuda TriFest and ITU Continental Cup, a sprint triathlon for elite male and female athletes as well as age group races
are busy preparing through rigorous training schedules and recently competed in the ITU Junior Caribbean and Central American Championships in Costa Rica
where they placed second and third in their group respectively
Tyler is currently abroad at the University of Leeds and juggles a dedicated training regime with a busy study schedule
Tyler pushes himself to the limit during his stringent daily workouts
The young athlete explained a typical day starts with a high intensity 5,000 meter swim
he will also do a run right after the bike to get the “feeling of tired legs before heading to the gym for strength and conditioning at the end of the day”
When asked about the Digicel Bermuda TriFest
Tyler said he “can’t wait for the fast paced ITU draft-legal style racing”
Erica is following an intense training schedule in Colorado
where she braves the temperamental weather as she prepares for the race
“One day it will be high 60’s and I’ll be running outside in shorts then the next week it’s snowing.”
The upcoming junior athlete cites Flora Duffy as her inspiration
saying she feels “really inspired seeing someone from a small island like Bermuda win so many races in the world circuit
that I started to believe that I could be a pro.”
Erica stated she is “looking forward to returning to a home crowd and showing my sponsors
peers and family who I am and what I can do”
The race is part of the worldwide Continental Cup race series
which is the first level of professional racing for triathletes with only World Cup and World Triathlon Series the levels above this
As the race is also a part of the CAMTRI region
the race will attract professionals and elite juniors from throughout the region
The hope is to welcome many neighboring athletes to the island for this event
“It has been over 20 years since Bermuda has hosted an ITU elite level event and a few of us on the BTA thought it was time for us to showcase Bermuda again
especially given the visibility of some of our athletes on the international circuit
“We were thrilled to be awarded the race and we have some great partners like Digicel and the Bermuda Tourism Authority to help bring it to life.”
Racing will take place in Hamilton starting early on the morning of April 9th
The race course will be very similar to the planned course for the recently awarded World Triathlon Series races set to be in Bermuda in 2018-2020
The event will include Junior races over shorter distances for 7 to 10 year-olds
11 to 12 year-olds and 13 to 15 year-old age groups
Adult Age Group and Elite races will be held over the regular sprint distances of a 750m swim 20km bike and 5 km run
The Bermuda Triathlon Association welcomes any triathlete either locally or abroad to participate in the Age Group race. Entries close on April 7th at race packet pickup. For more information visit here or contact bdatrifest@gmail.com. Sign up is on racedayworld.com

Race director Aaron Smith has hailed last weekend’s Digicel Trifest and Camtri Sprint Triathlon American Cup in Hamilton as a huge success
Some 35 elite athletes joined more than 100 local participants in the race
the first ITU-sanctioned triathlon in Bermuda in 20 years
Sunday’s event was a resounding success,” Smith wrote yesterday on the Bermuda Triathlon News website
“With over 100 local participants and 35 elite athletes we exceeded expectations for this inaugural event
“I couldn’t be prouder of what we were able to accomplish
especially given the challenges of limited resources and experience with events of this calibre
Nothing would have been possible without our sponsors
The Bermuda Tourism Authority have proved to be an invaluable supporter of our sport
“The fact that we were able to provide more than just a race but a Trifest experience that included training camps
officials’ clinics and an expo in addition to junior
fits their vision and ours for growing Bermuda as a sports tourism destination
hopefully with triathlon as a key element.”
Smith praised Digicel who stepped in at the last minute to be the lead corporate sponsor
providing not only funding but several valuable prizes
Other sponsors included Oakley Capital Investments
there were several businesses along our route who were impacted by road closures but for whom we are grateful for their co-operation and contributions including BUEI
Flanagan’s and the Pickled Onion,” Smith added
“We had over 50 volunteers sign up to help with the Trifest
many of whom put in long hours not just on race day but leading up to the race with planning and preparation
Smith also praised members of the local organising committee — Julia Hawley
“As well as everyone who served as a technical official
road marshals and all of the other roles,” Smith said
“It was my honour and privilege to be the Race Director for Bermuda’s first Continental Cup
My greatest reward has been the accolades and commendations we have received from the elite athletes thanking us for everything from their transportation and homestays
to the course layout and volunteer assistance … a true community effort
said that the hospitality was overwhelming and it was one of the best run events that she has ever attended … This was her 63rd ITU event!”
n Flora Duffy has decided to delay her comeback to competition in order to full recover from an injury
Duffy told Bermuda Triathlon News that she could have got her ITU World Series campaign under way last week in the Gold Coast leg of the series but opted to sit out to ensure she fully recovers from injury
