TechSteps To Gold: VAMA, a new motion capture tool, helps world-class athletes use biomechanics to fine-tune performanceBy Joe Lemire04.28.2025 Gabby Thomas
uses new VAMA technology to improve her starts and her overall performance
sprinter Gabby Thomas was shaking her head while recounting her block starts
describing them as “arguably some of the worst in track and field.” She is
a five-time Olympic medalist and reigning champion in the 200 meters
“but it really frustrates me because I am a perfectionist
USA Track & Field — in collaboration with the USOPC and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) — is able to offer its athletes a markerless motion capture tool called VAMA (Video Automatic Motion Analysis) to analyze athletes’ biomechanics
Small changes can have big impacts at the boundaries of performance
VAMA has become part of many American sprinters’ weekly routines over the past few years and
directly contributed to nine Olympic medals in Paris — not only by Thomas
but also by men’s 100-meter medalists Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley
women’s long jump winner Tara Davis-Woodhall and more
Spearheading VAMA’s implementation is Tyler Noble
USATF’s lead sport science and data analyst
who visited Thomas at her final training session before heading to the Paris Olympics
Thomas said her starts had been “a little wonky.” Noble can use an off-the-shelf GoPro camera that costs about $200 and shoots at 240 frames per second
then run the video through the VAMA algorithms and receive biomechanical feedback
focused on her stride length and the number of steps it took her to reach 10 meters
a measurable cue that helped Thomas focus on performing
and when you’re trying to be the best and get better by such small margins
“Working with Tyler and their program is so helpful
because I can see in real time what I’m actually doing
and then take that feedback and make corrections immediately.”
Among the metrics VAMA — a finalist for Best in Athlete Performance Technology at the Sports Business Awards: Tech — is able to collect are joint angles
ground contact times and vertical force production
Essentially every elite American sprinter has undergone at least one assessment
helping build a library to improve the algorithms and the understanding of what matters
we’ve got this very rich data set of our best starters
and so we can actually model where the first seven steps for any athlete should really be relative to
their height or their leg length,” Noble said
“We take a holistic approach to the demands of the race
because you’ve got to be able to get to those insights quickly.”
The technological origins of VAMA reside in diving — where Phil Cheetham
former USOPC director of sport technology and innovation
first applied motion capture with the SwRI — and also in the expertise of Ralph Mann
a former world record-holding hurdler who later earned his Ph.D
and pioneered biomechanical analysis in sprinting
as “the grandfather of USATF sports science” and added
book smarts with ‘I won a silver medal at the Olympic Games.’ He could speak the science and coach the athlete.”
USATF used Mann’s CompuSport technology for years
The analysis helps inform the conversations that “each coach-athlete pairing needs,” Noble said
USOPC Performance Innovation lead Elliot Schwartz praised Noble’s combined expertise in data analytics and sport sciences — not to mention that he’s a former college runner — to steer the project
Noble travels regularly to visit coaches and runners
but they can also upload videos for VAMA analysis on their own
“Having an analysis tool like VAMA means that
but also you can support so many more athletes,” Schwartz said
“A big part of what this technology is doing is it’s really democratizing who receives performance support.”
Sometimes that support can be a little inadvertent
Noble had two cameras set up to capture data on Olympic silver medal-winning hurdler Daniel Roberts prior to the Games
long jumper Davis-Woodhall had an absolutely perfect jump that her coach
a couple of inches longer than her eventual gold medal-winning distance in Paris
the last eight steps of her approach to the jump were captured by the second GoPro camera
That enabled him to share her step lengths and pattern as a final reinforcement of what Davis-Woodhall should do in competition
off-the-cuff [analysis] that would have been very difficult and time-consuming to do in the past,” Noble said
Lyles and Kerley won gold and silver in the Olympic 100
but their predictive modeling needed to take into account that Lyles
is four inches shorter than the 6-3 Kerley
When Noble assessed them shortly before the Games
he knew Kerley would reach 10 meters first
but Lyles would get there while moving at a faster speed
Noble projected Lyles as a slight favorite — and indeed he won in a photo finish
edging Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by five-thousandths of a second and Kerley by two-hundredths
“There’s not much you can really tweak or change a week before the 100 final,” Noble said
“but you can go up and you can show Noah the iPad
directly contributed to nine Olympic medals in Paris — not only by five-time Olympic medalist Gabby Thomas

The startup provides a 360-degree spiritual experience online through e-darshan
e-donation and astrology consultation and ensures maximum authenticity
It has onboarded 250 temples for e-puja services and 300+ astrologers to expand its user base and services in Tier I and II cities
VAMA aims to reach a Paying Monthly User Base of 100,000 Users per month
the country has witnessed a remarkable resurgence in spiritual interest
has found its online niche and given rise to a roaring business
A new genre of entrepreneurs now leverages technology to connect people with temples
rituals and traditional practices like astrology to offer a seamless spiritual experience with the help of a few clicks
astrology consultations on digital platforms should not be considered as the spread of superstition and pseudoscience
These are mere spiritual guidelines and cannot be used for fructifying purposes
When VAMA (short for Virtual Astrology & Mandir App) was set up in late 2020 by telco professional Manu Jain and a third-generation astrologer
who was a consultant at the company where Jain worked
Jain had observed the consistent popularity of astrology among all content offerings provided by telecom operators
But most of the content lacked authenticity as the professionals concerned were not curated by the platforms promoting them
several businesses used to offer e-darshan (virtual darshan) of temples and deities and online puja bookings
and devotees could not determine if a full-fledged puja/yajna had been conducted satisfactorily
Realising India’s booming digital ecosystem could transform how millions of people follow their religious and spiritual pursuits
VAMA founders developed an intuitive platform for e-darshan
The aim was to cater to the growing demand for a 360-degree spiritual experience online and ensure maximum authenticity
The founders’ complementary skills – Jain’s strong background in business strategy and operations and the other’s deep insights into rites
rituals and user requirements – turned out to be an excellent combination for starting a venture like VAMA
“We recognised that the modern and the tech-savvy
value convenience that aligns with their fast-paced lifestyle
we aimed to make our offerings more accessible
authentic and relevant to the younger generation,” said Jain
VAMA has raised INR 28 Cr from a clutch of VCs and angel investors and adopted a marketplace model
It has onboarded 250 temples for e-puja services and more than 300 astrologers
It has already conducted 2,00,000 e-pujas and expanded its services to 20+ Tier I and II cities across northern and central India
Users pay for its astrology services and the e-pujas they want to perform
Most of VAMA’s earnings come from revenue-sharing with temples conducting e-pujas; the rest comes from astrology and other services
The startup handles marketing and technology
enables live darshans and validates e-puja processes through live streaming (more on its tech stack later)
the temples do what they do best: Conduct pujas
which help them generate additional income by serving a vast pool of e-users.
It is eyeing INR 30 Cr in revenue in the current financial year
A key challenge faced by spiritual tech startups like VAMA is to overcome doubts and scepticism surrounding e-puja services
People who cannot travel in person and attend these pujas are unsure whether the rituals have been done as per the scriptures
preserving their sanctity and authenticity
VAMA uses digital tech and a high degree of curation so that the essence of these traditional rituals is never diluted
Here is a quick look at its five pillars that guarantee trust and qualified guidance
curation and curation: Nothing is left to chance
whether partnering with temples for remote pujas or building a network of highly qualified astrologers
VAMA has tied up with some of India’s biggest and best temples for e-puja services and only listed the best astrologers through a rigorous vetting process
Building trust & convenience through tech: “Before VAMA
some devotees used to watch e-puja services via WhatsApp video calls
But those were not well organised or followed a strict set of rules
users can perform any puja of their choice in any registered temple with complete transparency and proper guidelines,” said Jain
Apart from educating people about the authenticity and benefits of digital puja services
VAMA has built a seamless technology platform capable of hosting live pujas and high-definition consulting for astrology services
Service personalisation through data analytics: Another standout feature is VAMA’s commitment to service personalisation
The platform uses data analytics to match astrology consultants with users based on the latter’s specific requirements and past preferences
This helps people connect with astrologers best suited to address their concerns
allowing users to specify their ritual preferences
Effective customer interactions and greater reach: VAMA has built a proactive customer service team to address concerns promptly
offer alternative solutions and enable refunds when necessary
It also collects user feedback to improve its services and continuously enhance customer satisfaction
Its customer acquisition strategy combines digital and traditional marketing channels to ensure a wider reach
content marketing and partnerships with spiritual influencers are also leveraged for better brand recall
word-of-mouth promotion and offline collaborations with temples/religious organisations are critical in driving credibility
the app has seen 2 Mn downloads since its rollout
It is also pertinent to note that VAMA has managed to scale while keeping its operating costs low
“We have always been CM double digit positive (contribution margin is total sales revenue minus variable costs) and have consistently achieved more than 10%
The platform claims 2 Lakh transacting users but aims to reach 10 Lakh within two years
This will be driven by increasing its temple network from 250 to 500
It will also enter the rapidly rising NRI market to serve millions of Indians living abroad
If VAMA (and its ilk) remain committed to making spiritual services accessible
authentic and transparent in a digital-first world
Catering to the diaspora will be a lucrative opportunity if the startup and its peers are at the forefront of a new-age spirituality where technology helps the devout celebrate their faith and rituals despite the physical distance and the demands of a fast-paced life

12,064 locally-assembled cars were sold in the month
Deliveries of completely-built units (CBUs) also dropped by 13% to 13,132 over a month earlier
During the eight-month span, VAMA members sold a total of 188,997 autos, a year-on-year rise of 2%, with the sales of domestically produced units falling 11% and imported vehicles rising 21% year-on-year
and special purpose vehicles respectively increased 2%
Many brands which are not VAMA members are also present in the Vietnamese market
but they do not reveal their business results
the Vietnamese market will have a more positive outlook in the coming months as the Government's preferential policy of halving registration fees takes effect for three months starting from September
car dealers are offering promotion programmes to attract buyers
The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) has decided to shift a proposed semiconductor manufacturing facility by Vama Sundari Investments
a joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn
Yeida said that the relocation was unavoidable due to delays in acquiring land and infrastructure development in Sector 10
(Archive) Yeida had previously reserved 48 acres of land in Sector 10 for the manufacturing facility but has been unable to acquire the land so far
So it will allocate 48 acres in Sector 28 instead for the facility
Yeida officials and Vama executives said that Sector 28 also has better infrastructure
making it a more suitable location for the semiconductor manufacturing facility
“We issued a fresh Letter of Intent (LOI) on Thursday to Vama Sundari Investments
allotting 48 acres in Sector 28 for a semiconductor manufacturing facility
The representatives from Vama Sundari Investments and Foxconn met Yeida officials on Thursday to sign the revised agreement
The company plans to invest ₹3,706 crore in an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (Osat) facility
We have assured the company of Yeida’s support in obtaining necessary approvals
during which the company must complete formalities
including lease agreements and environmental clearances,” Singh added
the company cited Yeida’s proposal to shift the project to Sector 28
where land has mostly been acquired with only a few small portions still pending
Vama Sundari’s chief financial officer and company secretary
“The Sector 28 land is more suitable due to its existing infrastructure and connectivity
After visiting the proposed land in Sector 28
we find it ideal for establishing the Osat facility.”
The Osat facility will manufacture small panel driver and display driver integrated circuits
with an annual production capacity of 240,000 units
The project is expected to generate 3,780 direct and indirect jobs
Yeida initially issued an LOI to Vama Sundari in May last year for 50 acres in Sector 10
the state cabinet granted in-principle approval for the allotment
followed by the state government approving incentives of ₹8,500 crore in November for semiconductor projects
including Vama Sundari and Hiranandani’s Tarq Semiconductors
investing ₹28,440 crore in a 125-acre Sector 28 facility
Both projects received Letters of Comfort from the state government
Their applications are pending central government approval
HÀ NỘI — Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers (VAMA) has proposed changes in the special consumption tax rates (SCT) to better reflect the environmental benefits of different types of vehicles
VAMA suggests that the tax on HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles)
should remain at 70 per cent of the rate applied to conventional petrol or diesel cars
This is because HEVs offer a 30-40 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions compared to internal combustion engine vehicles
VAMA also has proposed reducing the tax on PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) to 50 per cent of the rate applied to petrol or diesel cars
saving over 50 per cent in fuel compared to conventional vehicles and thus should be incentivised
Under the current special consumption tax rates
vehicles running on petrol and electric power
where fuel use does not exceed 70 per cent of the total energy used
are taxed at 70 per cent of the rate applied to purely internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles
HEVs and PHEVs are less prevalent in Việt Nam compared to other countries
The existing special consumption tax rates in Việt Nam make HEVs and PHEVs 10-20 per cent more expensive than comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles
VAMA said it will make HEVs and PHEVs more financially attractive to consumers
would support Việt Nam’s Net Zero commitment by reducing overall emissions by 2050
highlighted how preferential tax policies have been successful in boosting the adoption of HEVs and PHEVs in other countries
One example is that Thailand offers preferential tax rates ranging from 17-27 per cent lower than those for internal combustion engine vehicles
Indonesia provides a significant tax reduction
with rates ranging from 8-40 per cent lower
the sales of PHEVs and HEVs surged by 86.58 per cent in 2022 in Thailand and the market share of PHEVs and HEVs in Indonesia grew from 2 per cent in 2018 to 15 per cent in 2023
reflecting a substantial increase in adoption driven by the tax incentives
VAMA's calculations indicate that the special consumption tax rates incentives for PHEVs and HEVs are set at 50 per cent and 70 per cent respectively
compared to internal combustion engine vehicles
this will result in a decrease in State budget revenue in the short term
Việt Nam is making a significant effort to improve its energy efficiency and reduce its reliance on imported crude oil
By cutting fuel consumption by over one million litre annually
the country is not only saving a substantial amount of money – about VNĐ27 trillion (over US$1 billion)
but also lessening the need to import over 14 million barrels of crude oil
This move will help ease the pressure on the Vietnamese trade balance
The special consumption tax incentives for PHEVs and HEVs would be a strategic move to make these eco-friendly options more affordable for consumers
This approach not only encourages the adoption of cleaner vehicles
but also helps in significantly reducing CO2 emissions by over 2.6 million tonnes
Such reductions are crucial for meeting carbon emission reduction goals in the transport sector
the trend of adjusting tax policies to favour indirect taxes
like value-added tax (VAT) and special consumption tax
over direct taxes aligns with broader global practices
which are levied on goods and services rather than income
can be adjusted to encourage sustainable behavior and generate revenue without directly impacting personal income
This shift is part of a broader strategy to balance tax systems while promoting environmental sustainability and economic efficiency
An expert from the General Department of Taxation Nguyễn Văn Phụng observed that Việt Nam
is adapting its tax policies by shifting from direct to indirect taxes
This strategic approach is being adopted to better align with current economic needs and international practices
Phụng emphasised that while shifting tax policies towards indirect taxes aligns with global trends and economic needs
it is crucial to design these policies carefully to avoid unintended negative effects
HÀ NỘI — Total car sales in January 2025 reached 18,893 vehicles
a significant drop from the previous month
according to the latest report from the Việt Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA)
Local experts attributed a sharp decrease in sales in January due to the Tết (Lunar New Year) holidays
Typically consumers tend to wait for new models and releases at this time of year
contributing to lower sales during this period
The report shows that January 2025 sales fell significantly with passenger car sales dropped 42 per cent month-on-month to 14,201 units
commercial vehicles decreased 33 per cent to 4,354 units
And specialised vehicles were down 40 per cent to 338 units
sales of domestically-assembled vehicles reached 9,120 vehicles
down 29 per cent compared to the previous month
and sales of imported vehicles stood at 9,773 vehicles
dropped 48 per cent against previous month
The overall market saw a modest decline of 1.8 per cent year-over-year by the end of January
Sales of passenger cars dropped by four per cent
Commercial vehicles decreased by one per cent and sales of specialised vehicles surged by 213 per cent
sales of domestically assembled vehicles decreased by 7 per cent while imported vehicles increased by 3 per cent compared to the same period last year
December sales of 31,598 vehicles featured 24,575 passenger cars
6,461 commercial vehicles and 562 special-purpose vehicles
The total figure went down 29 percent from a month earlier and 18 percent year-on-year
Total market sales until the end of December 2024
Passenger cars up by 12 per cent while commercial vehicles increased by 15 per cent and specialised vehicles increased by 32 per cent compared to 2023
Local experts predict that the market recover as consumer interest increases

HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) announced on December 10 that its member companies sold 44,200 vehicles in November, marking a month-on-month increase of 14 per cent.
Leading the charge were passenger cars, with 34,835 units sold, marking a 15 per cent increase. Commercial vehicles followed closely with 9,017 units, up 9 per cent, while special-purpose vehicles saw a staggering 54 per cent surge compared to the previous month with 348 units sold.
Breaking down the figures by origin, domestically assembled vehicles saw sales of 25,114 units, a 19 per cent growth. Meanwhile, fully imported vehicles also saw an uptick, reaching 19,086, an 8 per cent increase.
According to VAMA, the November sales boom can be largely attributed to the Government's policy in effect from September-November, which offered a 50 per cent reduction in registration fees for domestically manufactured and assembled vehicles.
From January-November, VAMA members reported total sales of 308,544 units, a 17 per cent increase compared to 2023. Passenger car sales rose by 18 per cent, commercial vehicles 16 per cent, and special-purpose vehicles 17 per cent year on year.
Domestically assembled vehicles reached 159,868 units, a modest 1.6 per cent growth, while fully imported units surged to 148,676, a striking 40 per cent yearly hike.
Experts view the even growth across all segments and vehicle origins in November as a clear sign of revival in Việt Nam's automotive market. The rising consumption demand, particularly during the year-end season, signals a positive outlook for the industry as it closes out 2024 and steams ahead into 2025. — VNA/VNS

On Jan. 29, students and faculty gathered in the MacEwan Student Centre for the President’s Town Hall, where President Dr. Ed McCauley, Provost Dr. Sandra Davidson, and the rest of the executive leadership team discussed the university’s Ahead of Tomorrow strategic plan for 2030
The executive team addressed some of the 77 pre-submitted questions which covered mental health
space utilization and community on campus.
Davidson stated that the university has experienced a decrease in the number of international students, which heavily impacts budgets. The U of C faces an $11-million hit due to the international enrollment drop
“We’re working very closely with our recruiters
with our registrar and with all of our teams to really think about how we can repair
rebuild and sustain the relationships with our international communities,” said Davisdon.
McCauley briefly mentioned his conversation with the Premier Danielle Smith
suggesting that a significant investment in research could be a promising path for Alberta
“A big investment in research for the province of Alberta might be the way to go,” said McCauley
Mike Van Hee — vice president of Services and Operations — discussed the university’s plans to prioritize space
such as the development of a new science building on U of C’s main campus as well as a new building at U of C’s Spyhill campus.
“[The university] will also see a prioritization towards adapting the existing space,” he said
referring to findings that the university had lower utilization of classroom space than previously assumed
When answering a question about the future of Equity
Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the university
McCauley emphasized the institution’s commitment to its strategic goals.
accessibility and a sense of belonging where we can all thrive,” said McCauley.
“We have renewed our mental health and wellbeing strategy to have that wider focus on wellbeing and support,” stated Davidson
“We continue to invest in our mental health [since] student mental health funding hasn’t changed since 2017.”
After the executive team finished answering the pre-submitted questions
where members of the audience were able to ask the executive leadership team their own questions
Questions were related to program suspensions and safe spaces at the university
an undergraduate student in the Department of Classics and Religion (CLARE)
raised concerns about the pausing of CLARE programs
His question was directed towards McCauley
asking why students have not been provided information on the closure and what the future of his education and that of the CLARE department looks like.
“There is a website on the faculty of arts that highlights the changes and steps that are being taken,” Davidson responded
While the Gauntlet was able to find the website that includes information on the curriculum renewal and its impact on current students
the website does not contain a plan that would answer the question posed by Bailey regarding the future of the CLARE department.
“We want to make sure that the programming that we deliver is contemporary so that we can attract students that want to come here and invest their time and intellect into those areas,” Davidson added
suggesting that the renewal of these programs is necessary and for quality purposes.
Davidson did not clarify in what ways the programs under review are outdated or lacking in quality
raised concerns regarding the suspension of programs within the School of Languages
“This process was very rushed … there was no consultation,” said Montes.
Montes also mentioned that three students were consulted on the suspension of the Spanish language program
and they all wrote a letter to Davidson but failed to receive an answer
she raised the question of whether this suspension is serving the “community” that McCauley has emphasized.
Davidson responded by stating that this curriculum renewal is to ensure that the needs of future students are met
“The pause to renew is very different from the pause to closure,” Davidson added.
Montes responded by expressing concern over the unusual nature of this current curriculum renewal process
stating that previous renewals had not required such drastic measures
“We have gone through a curriculum renewal before
and we never had to pause any programs,” said Montes.
Davidson said that students who are currently enrolled in the programs being suspended will not be affected

the programs are being suspended [because] of the work of the renewal and our commitment to languages,” Davidson responded
not only for those who are seeing that as their pathway
those who want to become educators of the future of languages
We want to centre the community in the future needs
making sure that what we are doing is meeting the future needs going forward.”
a counsellor at the Student Wellness Services
asked how the leadership team plans to create a more inviting space at the university
He expressed concern about speaking out on contentious issues
citing the university’s response to pro-Palestinian encampments
Ambrozaitis also voiced fears of potential repercussions
general counsel and vice-president of People and Culture
emphasized the importance of fostering an open and communicative workplace culture
stressing that meaningful change can only happen through deliberate action from leadership
“The only way we are going to actually do this and make this an environment where people can speak up is if we start doing it and if managers and leaders actually make the time and space for that to happen,” said Lacasse
When asked by the Gauntlet if there were any verbal assurances given to faculty
staff and students of affected programs that their programs would be reinstated after curriculum renewal
Davidson stressed that the programs were not being permanently shut down
“I went to the Faculty of Arts Council within the last month
One of the very vocal concerns was ‘You’re going to close these programs,’ and the answer is we’re not closing — we are pausing to do the renewal of the curriculum so that these programs can continue to be vibrant,” said Davidson.
She addressed concerns about potential job losses
stating that no such decisions had been made at this time
because the whole idea is we want these programs to have more students to be accessible and vibrant,” said Davidson
“That means we’re going to have more students coming in
we can hire more professors in those areas
you can never communicate enough and anytime there is change
The Gauntlet asked Bailey how he felt about the response he got from the executive leadership team
He expressed skepticism about the administration’s transparency.
“I feel like they didn’t give us the full story
What I’ve heard from professors is that [the response he received] is kind of what I should have expected to hear — but that the actual plan is to close down a good chunk of these programs
They said that they’re renewing them
We will have to wait and see,” he said

After a strong surge in sales in September when the Vietnamese automobile market saw a 45% increase
Hanoi (VNA) - After a strong surge in sales in September when the Vietnamese automobile market saw a 45% increase
This continued expansion was largely attributed to the Government's decision to cut registration fees by 50% for domestically manufactured and assembled vehicles
a policy set to last from September to November 2024
This initiative has significantly boosted consumer purchasing power
According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA)
sales of vehicles by VAMA members reached 38,761 units in October 2024
marking a 6% increase from the previous month and a 53% rise compared to October 2023
While the growth in October was more subdued compared to the explosive rise in September
it reflects the sustained attractiveness of Vietnam's market
particularly when compared to the same period last year
Passenger vehicles remain the dominant segment
popular for their flexibility and suitability for personal use
Commercial vehicle sales saw a notable 13% increase compared to the previous month
This segment is primarily driven by the demand for goods transport and passenger services
One key trend in the October 2024 market was the difference in sales between domestically assembled vehicles and imported ones
VAMA's report indicated that sales of locally assembled vehicles reached 21,113 units
This suggests that Vietnamese consumers are continuing to favour locally produced cars
attracted by lower prices and government incentives
particularly the registration fee reduction for domestic vehicles
reflecting intense competition in the market
Each brand is striving to maintain and expand its market share by improving models
the Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer
reported a significant milestone in October
This brought the total number of vehicles sold in 2024 to more than 51,000
making it the best-selling car brand in Vietnam for the first 10 months of the year
the total number of cars sold in Vietnam in October 2024 reached 57,400 units
the total sales across these groups amounted to 363,890 units
signalling positive growth despite ongoing challenges
Experts agree that October marked a small but significant step forward for the Vietnamese car market
driven by the reduction in registration fees and various promotional efforts by companies
While the growth rate was slower than in September
the continued stability is seen as a positive sign for the industry
the Vietnamese automobile market remains highly attractive
and with strong competition and flexible strategies from car manufacturers
the market is expected to experience more exciting developments in the coming months./
has announced it delivered more than 9,300 cars to customers in September
securing the leading position in the Vietnamese automobile market in the month
The Vietnam trade mission in Germany coordinated with the Berlin – Brandenburg automotive association (aBB) and authorities of the Vietnamese province of Nam Dinh to hold a roundtable on cooperation in the automobile industry
Car sales in August by members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) fell by 13% from the previous month to 25,196 units

the University of Calgary hosted its annual President’s Stampede BBQ on the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) quad from 11:30 a.m
Participants were encouraged to dress in Western attire as they engaged in line dancing
Various booths were set up around the quad and participants had the chance to take a photo with Rodeo Rex and Calgary Stampede mascot Harry the Horse
Lunch was provided to the first 1,575 people to line up and vegetarian
gluten-free and halal options were also offered
participants were encouraged to contribute to the Students’ Union (SU) Campus Food Bank via monetary donation or by bringing a non-perishable food item to a booth by the UCalgary sign on the MacEwan Hall stairs.
The event began with an opening prayer led by Elder Reg Crowshoe – former chief and current cultural and spiritual leader of the Piikuni First Nation in Southern Alberta
Crowshoe was recently appointed a member of the University of Calgary Senate and was offered tobacco in exchange for his blessing in the opening prayer.
Line dancing performed by the Chinook Country Line Dancers — a Calgary-based group known for their performances at the Calgary Stampede — succeeded the prayer
and Albertan country singer Travis Dolter performed.
During the event, the Calgary Student Movement (CSM) – known on Instagram as @UofC_divest4pal – held a protest on the MacEwan Hall stairs and in front of the stage
They held up signs addressing the ongoing war in Gaza
They also condemned the alleged actions committed against student protesters by Calgary police on May 9
They also called for the resignation of President Dr
Members of the CSM also held a die-in demonstration – lying on a bloodied cloth to symbolize the violence and oppression faced by Palestinians from the state of Israel.
The U of C administration provided the following statement in regards to the protest
the University of Calgary is committed to free speech and free expression
a group of about 20 people held a protest at the university’s annual Stampede barbecue
Our university supports free expression and peaceful protest as long as it remains safe
and this gathering caused no disruption to an event enjoyed by hundreds of students
CSM explained their reasons for protesting the event and detailed the specific actions and decisions by McCauley that were targeted in their protest.
University of Calgary President Ed McCauley brazenly called the Calgary police to silence student protesters at the [TFDL] quad on campus
These students were brutally assaulted by riot shields
rubber bullets and explosive pepper balls as they peacefully protested against the university’s complicity in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians,” reads the statement.
The statement continued to criticize the university for what it described as ignorance and disregard for global humanitarian crises
faculty and staff members were angered by the administration’s decision to host an event on the same grounds where police allegedly attacked students
President McCauley hosted a celebratory Stampede BBQ with food
music and dancing on the very grounds where the May 9th anti-genocide protestors were met with violence.” The CSM statement claims
“[The CSM] directly rejected [President McCauley]’s behaviour and demanded his resignation because someone who openly displays insensitivity towards a genocide and permits the brutalization of the university’s own students is clearly unfit to be President,” the statement continued
The statement called on the university to cease its complicity in the alleged Palestinian genocide by divesting from Israel
listening to student demands and concerns and respecting their right to protest.

Vietnam’s car sales improve by 12.6 per cent in December 2024 compared to the same period last year. Overall, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) recorded 340,142 units sold for the year 2024
These results are an improvement from 2023’s overall sales of 301,989 units sold
Majority of the overall units sold were of passenger cars
Passenger cars comprised 257,900 units of the total figure
while 79,332 units were commercial vehicles
Both categories increased by 12 and 15 per cent respectively
comprised 2,910 of the total sales figures
While total market sales have improved on-year
Passenger cars comprised most of these sales once more with 24,575 units sold
Commercial vehicles follow with 6,461 units and 562 of these sales were special-purpose vehicles
December 2023’s sales were also significantly higher
with a difference of 18 per cent from December 2024
Toyota remains the top-selling brand according to VAMA’s report
which excludes local brand VinFast and Hyundai
The Japanese automaker sold 66,576 units last December
Toyota currently holds 31.5 per cent share of Vietnam’s current vehicle market
While the Vios is Toyota’s top-selling car in Vietnam
the Mitsubishi XPander topped the list with 1677 units sold
Mitsubishi currently has 13.9 per cent market share
selling 3,808 units for the month of December
The third largest market share belongs to Ford
The Ford Ranger CKD comprised majority of Ford’s sales with 1,207 units sold
Hyundai recorded 67,168 units sold for the year and 8,316 units sold in December
The Hyundai Accent comprised majority of the Korean carmaker’s sales with 1,861 units sold
The Accent follows the XPander as the second top-selling car of December 2024
Vietnam’s overall car sales for the year amount to an estimate of 500,000 units sold
This figure does not include sales from Mercedes-Benz
While December sales decreased significantly compared to November, VietnamNet Global wrote that it was “predictable.” Buyers took advantage of 50 per cent tax cuts that were implemented from September to November of 2024
it should be noted that the tax cut was only applicable to locally assembled vehicles
Low-emission vehicles are becoming a trend among vehicle buyers
VinFast’s sales in combination with VAMA’s record of 10,000 hybrid units sold imply that Vietnamese citizens are keen on making the shift
Vietnam’s total sales performance for the year 2024 is seen as a positive change after sluggish sales recorded from 2023
CSM held a press conference outside of MacEwan Hall to address the university administration’s decision to reject their terms for a meeting
This development comes after the controversial response to a May 9 encampment on campus
which resulted in a significant backlash from students and allegations of police brutality
nor were our encampments confronted by counter-protestors
U of C administration is solely responsible for escalating the student encampment,” said Keegan Colwell
CSM’s demands included allowing adequate time to secure legal representation and a preliminary discussion of the meeting’s agenda with its members.
“We were just seeking to have someone advise us before — to make sure that the university is accountable
We see what they have done as just a PR move and have expressed already that they are not acting in good faith [and] do not engage with our demands,” said Colwell.
were aimed at ensuring fair and transparent dialogue
The university’s refusal to accommodate these conditions led CSM to boycott a scheduled meeting between student groups and university officials.
Contrary to official statements from the university and CPS that no injuries occurred on May 9
CSM claims to have testimonies and evidence of student injuries allegedly caused by police actions.
“We have testimonies from several students
We have records of hospitalizations as well,” said Colwell.
U of C student Erin Novakowski expressed disappointment with the university’s response to the encampments.
I have learned that this institution is comfortable calling violent police on students as soon as our peaceful
collective action is no longer favourable to the administration
I’ve also learned that this institution is comfortable staying silent and complicit while tens of thousands of Palestinians are murdered,” said Novakowski
UCalgary students will never be able to feel safe or proud of this institution.”
a Clinical Associate Professor with the Cumming School of Medicine
recounted his attempt to provide medical aid to injured students
which was reportedly obstructed by police.
“I told them ‘I’m the official medic for the protest and that children would get harmed
and I need to treat them.’ I was not allowed to come to the students
and I was told I would be arrested if I walked through,” said Zaidi.
and this was done by police brutality,” Zaidi continued.
a former faculty member and member of Independent Jewish Voices (IJV)
voiced her support for the students and criticized the university’s stance on the protests and divestment issues
“Other universities have also taken a stand
where they’ve agreed to students demands to investigate divestment
It’s shameful that the U of C refuses to take a stand against genocide despite all the talk about Indigenous rights
Four social work students — Lindsay Bodrug
and Rubina Zaman — were present in the crowd during the press conference
They shared their perspectives on the university’s response and the broader implications for student activism with the Gauntlet.
“The response from administration on May 9 was a complete failure of leadership
I think it also broke down further trust between students and administration and shut down any streams of communication to further discuss and have some critical conversation around the very reasonable requests,” said Bodrug.
The students emphasized the ethical implications of the university’s stance and the perceived inconsistency between academic values and administrative practices
so our profession and schooling is all about social justice and liberation
and we believe that extends to the people of Palestine and also beyond to Sudan and Congo
We agree with the [CSM’s demands] for disclosure and divestment
We don’t want our student dollars to be funding apartheid
“There is so much hypocrisy in what we are taught and asked to practice
We don’t want to be just writing or reading things and then not acting on them,” said Zaiman.
it inherently is an act of lateral violence on other marginalized communities and opens up the for things like this to continue,” said Feldmann
and we don’t have the infrastructure to be supporting folks at the capacity that we like to say that we do.”
When asked what changes or actions they would like to see from the university administration in response to the CSM’s demands
the students emphasized the need for transparency
and genuine student representation in policy-making.
“Disclose and divest is number one,” said Pettigrew
“Disclose the positions in faculty that are being funded by Israeli universities
disclose any investment in the use of weapons and AI that is being conducted by the U of C
and then make movements to divest from these systems of aggression.”
“More transparency and an apology for the way that students were violently shut down during the encampment
In a statement to the Gauntlet regarding the claims made during the press conference
the university claimed that they have received no reports of injuries from May 9 and have not refused to meet with the CSM
“The Calgary Police said they’ve received no reports of injuries from May 9
The University of Calgary has not had any injuries reported directly to us
We encourage anyone with injuries to report them to the police
or to ASIRT as part of their investigation
on June 6 University of Calgary leadership held a meeting with student groups who sent the demands on May 7 (PAC UCalgary)
The University has not refused to meet with anyone
nor has it rejected any demands related to the initial meeting.”

the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) announced on August 13
Hanoi (VNA) – Auto sales in Vietnam in July increased 9% from the previous month to 28,920 units
13,788 locally-assembled cars were sold in the month
Deliveries of completely-built units (CBUs) expanded 11% to 15,132 over a month earlier
VAMA members sold a total of 163,804 autos
with the sales of domestically produced units falling 12% to 81,637 units and imported vehicles rising 19% year-on-year to 82,167 units
Car dealers are offering huge incentives for customers to promote sales in the 7th lunar month which started on August 4
The month is traditionally considered taboo by most Vietnamese for activities concerning large sums of money such as purchasing real estate and cars./
Vietnam’s auto sales in May increased 6% from the previous month to 25,794 units
as dealers rolled out stimulus measures to spur consumption
according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA)
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has forecast that Vietnam's automobile market could grow by approximately 12% in 2025
with sales expected to reach 600,000 units
Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Industry and Trade has forecast that Vietnam's automobile market could grow by approximately 12% in 2025
the influx of completely built-up (CBU) imported vehicles is likely to exert significant pressure on the domestic automobile industry
the market recorded sales of 340,142 units
according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA)
sales of domestically assembled vehicles dropped by 5%
while imported vehicle sales soared by 39%
despite a three-month period of 50% registration fee incentives for locally assembled cars
Toyota reported sales of 8,642 vehicles in 2024
with only 2,790 units domestically assembled and 5,852 imported as CBUs
This represents a significant departure from the earlier dominance of locally assembled models
the Vietnamese market saw a growing presence of international brands
This trend is expected to continue this year
domestic manufacturers like VinFast have contributed to diversifying the market and offering consumers a wider range of choices
The adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles is also gaining momentum
driven by an increasing preference for environmentally friendly options among consumers
High bank interest rates and the sluggish performance of other economic sectors
have negatively impacted automobile purchasing power
many auto companies have reduced profits by offering incentives to stimulate consumer demand
Experts predict that 2025 will be a transformative year for Vietnam's automobile market
While automakers are expected to face challenges such as intense competition from imported vehicles and increasingly diverse consumer demands
these difficulties also present opportunities for innovation to meet modern consumption trends
The Vietnamese automobile market experienced substantial growth in 2024
driven by the government’s 50% registration fee reduction policy and aggressive promotional campaigns by dealerships
Including non-VAMA brands like TC Motor’s Hyundai and VinFast
total market sales reached approximately 510,000 vehicles
although they did not disclose their sales figures
achieving record-breaking sales of 87,000 vehicles
This exceeded its targets and surpassed the annual sales of many other automakers
securing its position as the best-selling car brand in Vietnam
The remarkable performance was bolstered by government policies
including a 100% registration fee waiver for electric vehicles and a 50% fee reduction for locally manufactured and assembled cars between September and November 2024
These policies triggered a short-term surge in sales as automakers
introduced discounts to retain market share
once the registration fee incentives expired
sales in December 2024 dropped to 31,598 units—a significant 29% decline compared to the previous month
2025 promises to be a pivotal year for Vietnam’s automobile market
Kim Long Motor Hue Joint Stock Company and Changan Automobile Group (China) on January 14 signed a cooperation agreement to build a passenger car factory at an industrial park in the central city of Hue that will be capable of producing 50,000 vehicles per year
Only 9% of households in Vietnam own a car
data from a mid-term population and housing survey for 2024 from the General Statistics Office (GSO) shows
Domestic car production in Vietnam is estimated at 388,500 units in 2024
according to the General Statistics Office
the sales of passenger cars rose 6% against April to reach 18,235 while commercial vehicle deliveries grew 7% to 7,292
those of special-purpose vehicles contracted 4% to 267 autos
VAMA members sold a total of 108,309 autos
with the sales of domestically produced units falling 14% and imported vehicles rising 8% year-on-year
Haval and many more refused to disclose their figures
There were also no sale results from Vinfast as the Vietnamese automaker has announced its quarterly from August 2023 as required by the U.S
Experts said the sales of CBUs had a better growth than those of domestic ones since the imported vehicles with a localisation rate of 40% or more are entitled to a 0% tariff under several free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed
Vietnamese dealers ran various promotional campaigns
supporting registration fees and offering gift packs
helping imported units attract more buyers
The Elbow River Camp stands as a testament to the enduring relationship between the Stampede and the Treaty 7 Nations
This year marks another chapter in the camp’s storied history
offering visitors a unique glimpse into Indigenous culture and traditions
Amber Big Plume – interpretive program manager at Elbow River Camp – shared the camp’s rich history
The camp has been part of the Calgary Stampede since its inception in 1912
wanted to establish a relationship with the five tribes of Treaty 7,” said Big Plume
Tsuut’ina and Stoney Nakoda Nations.”
During a time when Indigenous people were restricted from leaving their reserves without a pass
Wiedick worked with the federal government to allow them to participate in the Stampede
“The Calgary Stampede was the 10 days of the year that you didn’t need a pass to get off the reserve,” explained Big Plume
This unique arrangement fostered a long-standing relationship and showcased Indigenous culture to a broader audience
Big Plume said the Elbow River Camp is more than just a historical landmark — it is a living celebration of Indigenous heritage
“We pitch our tipis and live traditionally
sharing our culture with visitors,” said Big Plume
The camp features daily events – including tipi openings
dance demonstrations and tribe days – during which each community hosts dancers
Visitors can also explore Indigenous crafts and cuisine
with 36 local vendors offering everything from beadwork to bannock
The camp introduced a hand games competition this year
adding a new dimension to the cultural festivities
“Hand games are similar to gambling but are traditional Indigenous games,” explained Big Plume
“It’s a way for us to engage with each other and share our traditions with the public.”
One significant milestone for the camp was its relocation in 2016 to its current site from the original location where the five communities gathered in 1912
“It was a huge milestone for us,” said Big Plume
our interpretive program includes public tours at 2 p.m
The future of Elbow River Camp looks bright
with plans for continued growth and development
“The Calgary Stampede consults with our 26 tipi owners every year for suggestions on how to improve the camp,” said Big Plume
“We’ll be planning for next year as soon as the Stampede ends.”
