Greater emphasis was placed on the "Job Market" category as WalletHub says that its factors play the most significant role in influencing job seekers' decisions about relocating for employment Claiming the top spot in the analysis was Scottsdale retaining its position from WalletHub's last report WalletHub said this was largely due to the city having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the U.S It also ranked first in terms of paid internship opportunities the city had one of the highest median household incomes Scottsdale was also noted for its low crime rate and being one of the best cities for families Pittsburgh boasts the highest number of job opportunities per capita and ranks third in full-time job opportunities per capita at companies with 4.5+ star ratings on Glassdoor a website where current and former employees can review different workplaces WalletHub also said the city's residents had the ninth-highest level of job satisfaction in the county as well as jobs in the city offering good benefits It had the fourth-highest percentage of workers with access to an employer-based retirement program Pittsburgh also offered convenience for workers with the 11th-best public transit system The report said that at $124,000 adjusted for the cost of living Columbia had the highest median household income in the country It ranked fourth in terms of employment outlook—the quarterly percentage of employers who expect to add employees minus the percentage who expect to have fewer of them—as well Columbia was noted for having one of the most affordable rental markets in the U.S. as well as one of the lowest shares of jobs at risk from automation in the coming years The cities that made it into the top 10 were: City of Scottsdale Economic Development Department director Teri Killgore told Newsweek: "It's exciting to see Scottsdale recognized for the second year in a row as the nation's best city for jobs In addition to being a world-renowned tourism destination Scottsdale has prioritized attracting top quality companies with high wage jobs for decades This validates the ongoing work of our business community and city leadership to ensure Scottsdale remains a premier location for business." WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told Newsweek: "Memphis TN ranked last in this study because it faces significant challenges in both the job market and its socio-economic environment The city placed last in the socio-economics category which includes metrics such as low average salaries it struggled with broader factors ranging from quality of life to economic stability making it harder for residents to find fulfilling and stable employment." Lupo said in the report: "It's important to look at more than just the number of jobs available or the unemployment rate when determining the best place to find employment from the average salaries and benefits to job security and overall satisfaction "There are plenty of secondary factors to take into account as well from how easy a city makes commuting to jobs to whether it's a good place for raising a family or engaging in recreational activities outside of work." still unknown and the cause of the incident remains unclear at this time Amazon has revealed new technology that it says will help delivery drivers avoid organizing packages at stops or manually check to see if they have the right parcel for each delivery The technology – called Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval or VAPR – is intended to cut down on the time and effort it takes drivers to retrieve packages Amazon’s retail chief Doug Herrington said at a company event in Nashville on Wednesday Amazon expects to put 1,000 delivery vans that contain the technology on the road by early next year The company says VAPR essentially works like this: Once an Amazon delivery van arrives at a customer’s location it will project a green “0” on packages that need to be dropped off and a red “X” on those that should remain in the van The technology will also use audio and visual cues to let drivers know they have found the right package It said early tests have showed the technology helped reduce “perceived physical and mental effort” for drivers and saved them more than 30 minutes per route Writing about the Goo Goo Dolls got me thinking about the Replacements I recently interviewed Robby Takac of Goo Goo Dolls for a preview of the band’s show at PNC Pavilion on August 3 I connect Goo Goo Dolls to the Replacements because the first time I saw the former band This was several years before Goo Goo Dolls became modern-rock hit-makers and balladeers Goo Goo Dolls came across like a knockoff version of early-era Replacements by the time of that show at the University of Illinois essentially a vehicle for singer Paul Westerberg’s solo career that was just around the corner The Replacements were one of my favorite bands back then so I went to see them again a few months later when they played Chicago’s Grant Park on the Fourth of July for what would end up being their final performance (until they reunited for a series of reunion shows a few years ago) a band whose records I’ll probably never stop playing In celebration of the band’s “real” final show 25 years ago this month here’s a list of my five favorite Replacements albums it’s ranked on any number of ‘80s best-of lists Stylistically scattershot with hard rock (a cover of Kiss’ “Black Diamond”) a slow existential song (“Unsatisfied”) and various shades of punk And it has aged well: Westerberg’s “Androgynous” is a postgender anthem 30 years ahead of its time.“Pleased to Meet Me” (1987) This could be the best collection of Westerberg original compositions on a studio album – a great balance of incredible songwriting and tough rock-and-roll backing music “Alex Chilton” and “Can’t Hardly Wait” are classics of the ‘80s college-rock era.“Tim” (1985) I could flip-flop this one on the list with “Pleased to Meet Me.” “Tim” is also full of great Westerberg originals like “Hold My Life,” “Kiss Me on the Bus” and “Bastards of Young,” to name three But I prefer the relative polish of “Pleased” slightly more than the thunder and fury of “Tim.”“Hootenanny” (1983) This set the template for “Let It Be” the following year: a collection of songs that didn’t necessarily fit together style-wise but bound by a carefree attitude and strangeness – like a tune that recites classified ads in an alt-weekly newspaper.“Don’t Tell a Soul” (1989) “Pleased to Meet Me” was a move away from the band’s punk roots but still retained plenty of fire The follow-up is even more mature-sounding led by “Asking Me Lies” and “I’ll Be You.” But it was different than the four albums on the lists that chronologically preceded it as well as the 1991 debut Forgot to Take Out the Trash.” But it was bound to happen It’s even easier to see after 25 years have passed Paolo is a registered nurse who is contemporary jazz players among the event listings of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra  But the CCO is bringing saxophonist James Carter to town next weekend to perform the world premiere of “Caribbean Rhapsody,” a commissioned piece by composer Roberto Sierra August 27 at the School for Creative & Performing Arts a versatile player who over the course of a 25-year recording career has delved into various shades of jazz and beyond with positive results I like him because he can make the standards fresh as he did on 1995’s “The Real Quietstorm.” but on “The Real Quietstorm,” Carter attempted to show that jazz had beaten R&B to the punch when it came to romantic musical stirrings warm sound of Carter’s baritone sax on the Thelonious Monk classic “Round Midnight” kicks things off to set the tone and from there he plays tenor and alto plus flute and clarinet through titles by Sun Ra “Eventide,” which the keyboard player originally cut for Cincinnati’s King Records in 1958  I don’t know if there will be any time at the CCO show for Carter to display what he can do with a piece of classic American jazz it’s a great price to watch Carter play anything Is there a line in a song that bugs you as much as a line in the Lou Reed song “Down at the Arcade” bugs me I’m listening to one of my favorite records I’m pretty sure that it’s my favorite album of his which might be considered an uninformed opinion by some who look at Reed’s 1970s post-Velvet Underground work as his most important The songs are funny and fun in his typically dark way and the band that Reed assembled – pushed and pulled by the incredible bass player Fernando Saunders – rocks I turned to “New Sensations” because the Four Tops are in town tonight In “Down at the Arcade” Reed sings: “I called my disc jockey to dedicate a song to Blair / It’s the Temps singing ‘I’ll Be There.’” and so is “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” The only problem is “Reach Out I’ll Be There” is a Four Tops song  Reed could be singing “Tops,” not “Temps,” and it could be his Long Island accent lost upon my Midwest ears to quote Reed in another “New Sensations” lyric “end this mystery / answer my mystery?” If so I never had a Beach Boys-Buffalo Killers association in my head but I did have a Black Crowes-Buffalo Killers one When the Black Crowes played the Taft Theatre three years ago lead singer Chris Robinson dedicated a song to the Cincinnati band and gave a shout-out to them from center stage: “one of the best (expletive) rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world.” providing an occasion for me to get him on the phone for an interview and sneak in a question about the Buffalo Killers whom the now-disbanded Black Crowes brought out on the road with them as a show opener During our conversation Robinson gave another glowing Buffalo Killers testimonial It made me curious about what the Buffalo Killers are up to these days according to the front page of their website I still think of the Buffalo Killers as a newish band brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard’s heavy ‘70s-styled follow-up project to their previous garage-rock outfit A new record would be the Buffalo Killers’ eighth Then I went to the Buffalo Killers Facebook page and found more praise from another well-known rock ‘n’ roll front man But this front man is much better known than Robinson and the praise was specifically directed at Andrew Gabbard The Buffalo Killers shared a post made by Brian Wilson in August that reads: “My buddy Andy from the Buffalo Killers just dropped this little 5-song (sic) today.” It’s followed by a link to Gabbard’s Bandcamp post of a five-song collection titled “Andy Butchers The Beach Boys.” It’s Andy Gabbard solo covering five Beach Boys songs: “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder),” “Girl Don’t Tell Me,” “He Gives Speeches,” “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” and “You’re So Good To Me.” Gabbard’s renditions aren’t too far removed from the originals The production is rawer compared to the Beach Boys’ pristineness but there’s a mischievous nature in his voice in contrast to Wilson’s inherent melancholy I’m curious about how Wilson came to hear the recordings signing onto Facebook to share his thoughts I also like that Gabbard would do an exercise in music-making like this Gabbard’s bands demonstrate his admiration for classic rock while making something new out of it his influence is on the surface for all to see Go to andygabbard.bandcamp.com to hear “Andy Butchers The Beach Boys.” There are many natures, after all. There is room for invention, strangeness and, naturally, sorrow. Cohabitation is required. can be found in a variety of circumstances up to and including whether a given player competing against a given set of opponents is having a good or bad day It was by no means a ‘sure bet’ that Jayson Shaw surely one of the better pool players on the planet at the moment was going to win the Dynaspheres Cup 10-Ball Open 14-15) at Bank Shot Bar & Grill in Laurel but the notion that it was a ‘sure bet’ got a jolt from a well-known pool-reality button when Shaw lost the event’s hot seat match to a mid-Atlantic competitor though he’s cashed in many events over the past eight years has never actually won a major tournament (recorded by us here at AZBilliards) Jimmy Varias has been runner-up at two stops on that tour taking the same path of claiming the hot seat and then being defeated in the finals by Shaun Wilkie in 2014 and Brian Deska in 2016 the competition in this $1,500-added event that drew 48 entrants seemed to underperform None of the event’s final four competitors managed to tally a game-winning average above 68% the final four played most of their games on the winners’ side of the bracket the four of them played only seven matches on the loss side the final four recorded only three shutouts (third-place finisher Grai “Pookie” Rasmechai was involved in two of them a win and a loss) and were involved in only two double hill matches that there were junior competitors on hand fresh from competition at the BEF Junior Nationals Silver Medalist Skylar Hess (14 and Under Girls) lost her first match in this event won her first match on the loss side and then fought Europe A new analysis of the broken mandible reveals that it has nothing in common with other Neanderthal remains since it's dated to between 45,000 to 66,000 years ago might be the oldest known piece of our species' anatomy on the European continent led scientists to the conclusion that Banyoles in fact belonged to a Neanderthal "The mandible has been studied throughout the past century and was long considered to be a Neandertal based on its age and location, and the fact that it lacks one of the diagnostic features of Homo sapiens: a chin," says palaeoanthropologist Brian Keeling of Binghamton University in the US Keeling and his colleagues undertook a thorough investigation of the bone using a process called three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis This is a non-invasive protocol that involves going over the shape of a bone in exhaustive detail mapping its features and comparing them to other remains Then they compared Banyoles to the mandibles of Neanderthals and modern humans "Our results found something quite surprising," Keeling says "Banyoles shared no distinct Neanderthal traits and did not overlap with Neanderthals in its overall shape." It seemed more consistent with the jawbones of our own branch of the family tree Since a chin is considered a defining feature of Homo sapiens compared to other archaic humans Banyoles also shared features with ancient hominins that inhabited Europe hundreds of thousands of years ago The researchers compared the bone to one from an early modern human from around 37,000 to 42,000 years ago whose remains were found in Romania It's known for having Neanderthal features DNA analysis of that jawbone showed the DNA included sequences from a single Neanderthal ancestor who lived four or six generations prior – which likely explains its mixed features Since Banyoles doesn't have Neanderthal features the team concluded that its strange shape is unlikely to be because the individual was a hybrid Comparison with earlier Homo sapiens bones from Africa showed that these individuals had less pronounced chins than we do now So there are two possibilities. Either Banyoles was a Homo sapiens from a previously unknown group that coexisted with Neanderthals in Late Pleistocene Europe. Or it was a hybrid between Homo sapiens of this unknown group and a yet-to-be-identified ancient human Only one thing is known for sure: that Banyoles was not a Neanderthal the researchers say – try to extract some DNA from the bone or one of the teeth "If Banyoles is really a member of our species, this prehistoric human would represent the earliest Homo sapiens ever documented in Europe," Keeling says The research has been published in the Journal of Human Evolution own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment Queen's University, Ontario provides funding as a founding partner of The Conversation CA Queen's University, Ontario provides funding as a member of The Conversation CA-FR View all partners The concept of a vampire predates Bram Stoker’s tales of Count Dracula — probably by several centuries In 1819, 80 years before the publication of Dracula, John Polidori, an Anglo-Italian physician, published a novel called The Vampire became the benchmark for our descriptions of vampires But how and where did this concept develop It appears that the folklore surrounding the vampire phenomenon originated in that Balkan area where Stoker located his tale of Count Dracula Stoker never travelled to Transylvania or any other part of Eastern Europe (The lands held by the fictional count would be in modern-day Romania and Hungary.) a bloodthirsty prince born in Transylvania in 1431 But where did the myth of vampires come from? Like many myths, it is based partly in fact. A blood disorder called porphyria became prevalent among the nobility and royalty of Eastern Europe Porphyria is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to produce less heme — a critical component of hemoglobin the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues It seems likely that this disorder is the origin of the vampire myth porphyria is sometimes referred to as the “vampyre disease.” Consider the symptoms of patients with porphyria: Sensitivity to sunlight: Extreme sensitivity to sunlight Fangs: In addition to facial disfigurement repeated attacks of the disease causes the gums to recede Blood drinking: Because the urine of persons with porphyria is dark red folklore surmised that they were drinking blood some physicians had recommended that these patients drink blood to compensate for the defect in their red blood cells — but this recommendation was for animal blood and their fangs led to folk tales about vampires Aversion to garlic: The sulfur content of garlic could lead to an attack of porphyria Reflections not seen in mirrors: In the mythology The facial disfigurement caused by porphyria becomes worse with time Poor oxygenation leads to destruction of facial tissues Fear of the crucifix: During the Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834) 600 “vampires” were reportedly burned at the stake Some of these accused vampires were innocent sufferers of porphyria Porphyria patients had good reason to fear the Christian faith and Christian symbols Acute attacks of the disease are associated with considerable pain, and both mental and physical disturbance. This condition has been ascribed to the English King George III, although subsequent analysis has shed some doubt on porphyria as the cause of his “madness.” Nowadays, with our scientific knowledge of porphyria, instead of fearing these folks, we can love and care for them and treatment is mainly supportive: pain control fluids and avoidance of drugs and chemicals that provoke acute attacks Some success has been achieved with stem cell transplants Could Stoker have known of the existence of porphyria, and/or its link to vampire folklore? It was only in 1911, eight years before Stoker’s book appeared, that the diseases of porphyria (there are several types) were classified by H. Gunther researcher and author George Harley had described a patient with porphyria a few years earlier Stoker surely wins the prize for the best example of myth entangled with medicine This story is an edited excerpt from the book Of Plagues and Vampires: Believable Myths and Unbelievable Facts from Medical Practice by Michael Hefferon Your support helps make our show possible and unlocks access to our sponsor-free feed Native American protestors gather at a construction site for the Dakota Access pipeline to perform a daily prayer ceremony have gathered at two prayer camps along the Cannonball River near its confluence with the Missouri in North Dakota to protest the Dakota Access pipeline The Camp of the Sacred Stone is full of all manner of people — kids and representatives of several Native American tribes — all gathered alongside the Standing Rock Sioux Nation to resist construction of a controversial oil pipeline that would cut across the American heartland Since construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline brought protesters to the encampment in April organizers say nearly 200 tribes have offered support leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement and other activists have joined together to create one of the more unusual coalitions to back a cause Their efforts hit a roadblock on Friday when a federal judge denied the Standing Rock Sioux's request to stop construction of the 1,172-mile pipeline which would stretch from North Dakota to Illinois the Department of the Army and the Interior Department then blocked construction in the most contested areas of the planned pipeline No matter what the government or courts ultimately decide many of the people who call themselves "water protectors" coming together at the camp near Cannon Ball have said they're prepared to continue the resistance despite the bulldozers "The spirit out there is incredible," said Ruth Hopkins who was born on the Standing Rock Reservation The camp was started in early April by Ladonna Brave Bull Allard who was joined back then by a handful of other tribal members the movement — branded #NoDAPL — has rallied support across racial Native tribes have coalesced around this issue like none in recent history "Tribal leaders don't often get involved at the level they're getting involved in this resistance," said Kim Tallbear a professor of Native Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and an enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate in South Dakota "But then you've got all these activists on the ground who are looking to resist and critique through other channels." “Set Him Free” in 1959; (“I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too” in 1960; “My Last Date (With You),” “The Hand You’re Holding Now” and “Optimistic” in 1961; “Where I Ought To Be,” “Something Precious” and “The Little Music Box” in 1962 “The End of the World” was a top-three hit on both the country and pop charts and charted in England as well and it exemplifies her sound: double-tracked lead vocals – as if the sound of her voice wasn’t sweet enough single-tracked – backed by that smooth country-pop Atkins production which became known as the Nashville sound or countrypolitan I once again turned to “The End of the World” after I recently interviewed Terry Adams of NRBQ coming to the Southgate House Revival on September 16 She was married to NRBQ bassist Joey Spampinato and she cut an album with the band in 1988 called “She Sings said he had been a fan of Skeeter’s since the Davis Sisters days and first met her in 1970 when I interviewed him a couple months ago before his band Guided By Voices came to town The younger Bare didn’t have any Skeeter stories to tell If Davis’ memory is fading from the son of one of her most famous duet partners it’s no wonder that nobody around here is honoring her memory I’d like to make a suggestion: There should be a statue of Skeeter Davis outside the front doors of her alma mater It could take the form of her image on the cover of the album “Skeeter Davis Sings The End of The World” – a smile on her face in contrast to the record’s foreboding title as if to welcome the happy children of the future to the hallowed halls of Dixie Heights The world – or at least the part of the world where Skeeter Davis’ fan base resides – is watching but there are signs of links to pro-Beijing figures one speaker made a disconcerting proposal for disciplining Hong Kong’s young protesters a co-founder of the Economic Times newspaper We can still go to a hardware shop to buy a 20mm PVC pipe.” The next day, dozens of men in white T-shirts and masks descended on a railway station in Yuen Long where they beat commuters with long bamboo rods and pipes Footage showed several men punching and kneeing demonstrators returning from an anti-government march Photos showed commuters with bloodied faces and blood smeared on the station floor Shek has since apologised for his comment made in jest but it is one of several details linking the attack to pro-government camps Protesters and opposition politicians have not only accused the government of looking the other way when the attacks took place – police arrived well after the assailants had left – but of facilitating them was among those injured when he attempted to help a female journalist who was being beaten He was taken to hospital and suffered bruises on his back and arms An injury to his face may require plastic surgery Cheng said it was common knowledge that organised crime societies were active in areas such as Yuen Long in the outskirts of Hong Kong they won’t attack local citizens,” he said threatening them to withdraw from the social movement is a common tactic used by the Communist party qunzhong dou qunzhong” – ‘the masses fighting the masses’ It seems the government has no way to stop the protests.” A video showed the pro-Beijing legislator Junius Ho meeting the men in white in Yuen Long In response to accusations that he had hired the men to go after protesters Ho said in a press briefing on Monday that he had nothing to do with the attack and only warned residents to be safe and avoid violent protesters When a journalist pointed out that the men had attacked protesters first and the police chief have vehemently denied any connection with the attack Sunday’s violence in some ways mirrors similar attacks in 2014 during Hong Kong’s pro-democracy Umbrella movement. After demonstrators occupied the city centre for weeks, men with mainland Chinese accents began assaulting protesters. Now that the latest protests are in their seventh week officials may again be desperate to put them down “This is not the first time thugs have been sent in to beat up protesters,” said Lynette Ong a political scientist at the University of Toronto who has been studying organised crime in China and the Hong Kong government or pro-Beijing officials are becoming more desperate to put the protests to rest.” The method has precedent in mainland China where local authorities are known to hire thugs to intimidate residents unwilling to give up their land “The underlying motive is quite similar … Sending in thugs is an option to evade responsibility,” said Ong the assailants appeared to be from Hong Kong who enjoy privileges related to their clans in their respective areas may not necessarily have been paid or ordered to attack commuters and protesters “These thugs … terrorise the protesters so fewer people will come out to protest,” said the pro-democracy legislator Ray Chan “Some opportunists among them may even want to get political credit for their actions so they will be in a better position to demand more influence in government policies that favour them,” he said The attacks may not have served their intended purpose Demonstrators have been called on fellow protesters to “prepare to fight” and some are planning to apply for a permit to hold the next rally in Yuen Long Burtell and Kedia split top two prizes at concurrent 575 & Under Fargo event B & L Tournaments held its inaugural Senior Open at Bank Shot Bar & Grill in Laurel Potential competitors were ‘carded’ to determine whether they had reached the qualifying age of 50 and according to Brian Kilgore (the ‘B’ in B & L) there was at least one person who was turned away because he would not be 50 until days after the start of the tournament The event drew 46 entrants and requests for more of them as well as requests to arrange for a similar Super Seniors event in the future Joseph Wright, Jr. joined the AZBilliards database for the first time as the undefeated winner of the inaugural event. Politicians from rival parties, the Catholic church, farmers movements and NGOs have all spoken out against mining as a route to development. Polls suggest that more than 60% of the population (pdf – in Spanish) is against metal mining in the country Salvador Sánchez Cerén – now president-elect – followed the example of his recent predecessors by publicly vowing not to allow metal mining in the country "The threat of metal extraction is a threat to life," the Salvadoran daily La Prensa Gráfica reported him saying in February "Everyone says that El Salvador has underground wealth – golden valleys and basins of silver – but what does it mean if we allow it to be removed The national round-table against metallic mining in El Salvador a network of environmental and community organisations is now pushing for a law that would make permanent what is a de facto moratorium on metal mining in the country deputy attorney at the Salvadoran state's human rights office says the country must move towards a definitive end to mining where an old gold mine has allegedly left behind vast environmental damage including severe water contamination "We don't think the country has the institutional structures to regulate these companies … and even if we did In rural Chalatenango, communities have begun adopting municipal bylaws with strict and wide-ranging environmental protections. There is also a campaign for towns and villages to declare themselves mining-free "[Mining companies] see El Salvador as a place for exploitation – not a place where there are people," says José Raimendo Alas "Even though we are a small country we have the same rights to life." 'People would rather die fighting than let the companies in,' says the mayor of Nueva Trinidad Photograph: Claire Provost for The GuardianAlthough Nueva Trinidad has adopted a bylaw that prohibits mining permits some residents – many of whom are ex-guerrillas – are also prepared to take matters into their own hands if the government fails to keep companies at bay "People [here] would rather die fighting than let the companies in because they know this is a matter of life or death for the next generation," the mayor says "Our struggle starts at the community level … [but] even if we kick mining out of El Salvador it could still happen in Honduras and that would still affect our water," Alas says "We don't just care about Chalatenango The myth of El Dorado, a lost city of gold, drew legions of explorers to the Americas in search of its legendary but elusive treasure is at the centre of the fight to keep the country's gold and other metals in the ground has filed a $301m (£179m) claim against the Salvadoran government at a little-known World Bank tribunal claiming the country violated its own investment law by not giving it a permit to start operations The government argues that the company lacked necessary permissions to apply for a concession and that it did not supply a final feasibility study for the project The case, which began in 2009, has cost El Salvador millions of dollars. On Thursday, more than 300 NGOs, trade unions, and civil society groups denounced it as a "direct assault on democratic governance" in El Salvador have come under increasing attack since 2009 "Even during the war I wasn't so afraid of being killed," said anti-mining campaigner Hector Berrios Take 19-year-old Rigoberto de Jesús Flores The teenager is taking free computer classes at the Pacific Rim site and says he wants to see the mine opened "It's the only opportunity we have for jobs here," he says.
