The discovery was announced at an online press conference on Thursday 29 April that was streamed by more than 1,300 people
A member of the public contacted the County Administrative Board after they happened on around 10 artefacts which had been uncovered by some kind of animal
“Once it became apparent that this might be a hoard
the decision was taken to carry out an archaeological dig,” says Pernilla Morner
Curator at the Cultural Environment unit of the Västra Götaland County Administrative Board
an archaeologist working at the Cultural Affairs Committee within Region Västra Götaland
accompanied the member of the public who found the objects to the site and noted that the artefacts were of fantastic quality
“Initially I thought these might be recent copies
but that turned out not to be the case,” he says
During the subsequent archaeological dig which has now concluded
About 80 per cent of these were found outside a burrow
while the remainder were found under a large boulder inside the burrow
The area in which the objects were found is not near to any previously known settlements
What has fascinated researchers and conservators the most is not only the quantity of objects
“All the artefacts were essentially intact
For them to be so well preserved is unique
and it is likely they would have remained there unless an animal had decided to build its nest there,” says Madelene Skogberg
conservator at the Cultural Affairs Committee within Region Västra Götaland
The coming process to preserve these artefacts will seek to bring out the ornamentation
“There are several interesting dimensions to this from a research perspective
This find poses whole new questions,” says Johan Ling
Professor of Archaeology at the University of Gothenburg
The dig utilised contemporary archaeological methods
which offer a significant advantage in comparison with Bronze Age finds discovered 100-200 years ago
the team used laser scanning and analysed the soil they had lain in
Half of the artefacts would not have been found without metal detectors
“The artefacts are from the Late Nordic Bronze Age
this is in the top three of the best finds ever
They are extremely exclusive objects,” says Johan Ling
“They have also been in extremely good conditions for their preservation
It is very rare to see quality of this kind.”
The objects were worn by one or more high-status women in the Bronze Age and were used to signal their social position
“They would have worn them from head to toe
spiral brooches (fibulae) and clasps which were used for textiles
essentially intact anklets that would have been worn by the women,” says Johan Ling
chains and a tutulus (another type of brooch worn ornamentally by women on their clothing or belt)
a celt (a hollow axe) was found along with residue from castings in bronze
Also uncovered was a goad that it is believed was used to spur horses
This type of artefact has been previously found in Denmark
These types of artefacts are common finds in northern Germany and Poland
“This demonstrates that there was some degree of contact with these groups,” says Johan Ling
There now remains a significant volume of analyses to be carried out
and Johan Ling believes it is important to carry out a more targeted investigation of the area to see whether there may be other hoards
The artefacts that have been found are part of what is known as a “hoard”
which means the artefacts were intentionally placed there
“This may have been in connection with a burial in order to facilitate their use in the afterlife
But more likely as a way of signalling their status: “I can afford to sacrifice some of my affluence!”
The conservation of the finds will be a fairly lengthy process and their future after that process remains undetermined
That decision will be up to the Swedish National Heritage Board to make
but it is likely they will end up in a history museum
This means that they will now be valued in order to determine their market value
and it will then be the responsibility of the Swedish National Heritage Board to address the matter of remuneration for the man who found them in the woods south of Alingsås

the small Swedish town of Alingsås transformed itself into a walkable lighting art installation
More than 70,000 visitors strolled along the three-kilometre-long light trail at the Lights in Alingsås outdoor festival
and they were enchanted by the many lighting art installations created by international designers
As part of the Lights in Alingsås organisation team, the German company Irrlicht Veranstaltungstechnik was responsible for the festival’s equipment management. One of the key pieces of equipment the company used was the ZENIT P40 LED-PAR outdoor spotlight by Cameo
and created by US lighting designer Jessica Krometis – 36 ZENIT P40 IP65 outdoor PAR lights (including an elliptical 60° by 10° diffuser) were used to illuminate trees around a pond with uplights
“We receive the designers’ concepts in the spring and try to implement them in the best way possible using the available spotlights,” explained Dierk Hartmann
only outdoor spotlights are suitable for Lights in Alingsås
We chose the Cameo ZENIT P40 for Jessica Krometis’s installation because its power
LED configuration and beam angle correspond very closely to her specifications.”
lighting installations are created that come in many different sizes and forms
The Lights in Alingsås team makes every effort to implement even the most unusual wishes in the shortest possible time
At the core of the entire project is a one-week workshop
during which lighting designers work day and night with their teams in order to bring their lighting art designs to fruition
there is a never-ending stream of new ideas and suggestions for changes,” explained Hartmann
Hartmann is now working with the lighting designers for the ninth time
“It’s important to react quickly and find effective solutions
Cameo’s ZENIT P40 was perfect in this regard
All of the spotlights could be put into operation immediately
without external drivers and controls – this is the norm in the event technology world
but not necessarily in the architectural sector
withstanding five weeks of Swedish autumn weather is certainly not a bad reference for any outdoor spotlight…”

It is one of the largest finds of Late Bronze Age objects ever recovered in Sweden
Analyses have now shown that the copper in the objects originates from Spain.
“We’ve taken samples from some of the objects and sent them for analysis in a laboratory in the Basque region
The results indicate quite unequivocally that the copper is actually from the Iberian peninsula
professor of archaeology at the University of Gothenburg
The documentary Bronsskattens hemlighet (Secret of the bronze hoard) is now available on SVTplay
and invites viewers to follow the University of Gothenburg archaeologists in their quest for answers
Who could have deposited these objects here
and what was the social positions of these people in the Bronze Age society
And perhaps the most important question of all: Did these objects belong to one person or a certain group in society
Anyone attempting to make bronze requires copper and tin
tin does not exist in Sweden and copper was not mined here during the Bronze Age
last autumn archaeologist Johan Ling and his team of researchers travelled to Spain and Galicia
to one of areas in Europe that are richest in copper and tin
to examine the rock carvings (called petroglyphs) in the region
The team found petroglyphs in Spain that were similar to those in Sweden
there are petroglyphs in Galicia that depict Scandinavian ships characteristic of the period
and exactly the same period that the Alingsås find is from,” Johan Ling explains
“There is much that indicates that groups from Scandinavia could have been here to make these carvings
but also in the carving technique and how they are depicted on flat rocks.”
But a question we cannot answer with these analyses is why these objects were deposited just here
The terrain slopes steeply and access is difficult.
“The location has nothing to do with any settlements
What is interesting is that on the other side of this hilly area
another major hoard of bronze objects was discovered
So perhaps this hill was used as a space for sacrifices in different phases of the Bronze Age
and that it can be seen as a ritual landscape,” says Johan Ling.
but there were no spruce forests in Sweden during the Bronze Age
the archaeologists now believe that the place was a man-made stone construction that may have been highly visible in the Bronze Age landscape
have acquired a special significance and may have been used for depositions and associated rituals
You might almost think of it like a bronze statue.”
Bronsskattens hemlighet (Secret of the bronze hoard), was created by documentary filmmaker Mikael Agaton and was broadcast on the program Vetenskapen värld (World of Science) on Monday, 6 February at 8 p.m. It is also available on SVTplay.
The documentary features archaeologists Johan Ling
Magnus Artursson and Kristian Kristiansen from the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg
and Jonathan Westin from the Gothenburg Research Infrastructure in Digital Humanities (GRIDH)
along with Faculty of Humanities’ honorary doctor and cultural geographer Pär Connelid
and Marta Díaz-Guardamino (Durham University) are featured

A large deposit of Bronze Age artifacts thought to originate between 750 and 500 BC have been excavated in the Swedish town of Alingsås by Archaeologists from the Administration for Cultural Development
various bronze objects were discovered by members of the public
who notified the Administrative Board of Västra Götaland county about the findings
The county dispatched a team comprised of members from the Administration for Cultural Development and researchers from the University of Gothenburg to conduct an archaeological survey
A significant number of the findings consisted of decorative objects
and needles and hoops that were used to fix various articles of clothing
Alongside these findings also included a rod
which were also sent off for preservation along with the items as mentioned earlier
“Most of the finds are made up of bronze items that can be associated with a woman of high status from the Bronze Age,” explained Johan Ling
Renewable energy firm RES and battery storage developer SCR have partnered to deploy another grid-scale battery storage project in Sweden
The firms will deliver the 17MW/17MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for local distribution network operator (DNO) and utility Alingsås Energi
which runs the electricity system in Alingsås municipality and is owned by the municipal authority
The project is set to reach commercial operation date (COD) in mid-2024
It is RES (Renewable Energy Solutions) and SCR’s (Scandinavian Capacity Reserve) second BESS project in Sweden, after a 20MW one launched recently for another DNO
The project in Alingsås will be located close to one of the DNO’s substations and will help the operator manage the supply and demand of electricity on the grid
Commercial Manager at RES – Nordics commented: “The need for energy storage is heavily increasing in Sweden and projects such as this one in Alingsås and Elektra in Landskrona are game changers for smarter energy systems.”
added: “We are extremely happy to be able to attract this type of investment to Alingsås
We see ourselves as enablers in creating the conditions for the green transition that is underway
A battery storage of this size becomes an important resource in the local grid
It contributes to secure the stability for the residents of Alingsås municipality in terms of energy supply and that is one of our main missions.”
The energy storage market in Sweden has become very active over the past 12 months as developers seek to capitalise on high ancillary services revenues today and future opportunities in energy trading and capacity markets
saw another DNO Nybro Energi order a 12MW BESS from Soltech Energy Solutions for a COD before the end of 2023
However, projects which are not directly for a DNO have tended not to give a firm COD in their announcements, including Axpo’s SENS project as well as those from developer Ingrid Capacity, which recently raised US$100 million for its substantial but early-stage pipeline of BESS
Alingsås HK and Nærbø IL lost in the first leg of their EHF European Cup Men semi-finals against CS Minaur Baia Mare and Drammen HK
both of last weekend's defeated Nordic teams will look to do better at home
as they are aware that a strong comeback will put them through to the final
The four semi-finalists are hardly in the same league if we look at their history
While Baia Mare won the IHF Cup in 1985 and 1988
and Drammen triumphed in the Challenge Cup in 1996
Nærbø are playing in their debut season in a European club competition

two-time Swedish champions Alingsås sit somewhere in between

From jogging in a nature reserve to joining in the Scandi ritual of fika
a new initiative in west Sweden gives visitors the chance to connect with the inhabitants
Leah HarperSat 28 Oct 2017 10.00 CESTLast modified on Wed 29 Nov 2017 17.20 CETShareWithin a couple of hours of landing in Gothenburg
I am having lunch at street food truck Jinx with a local named Jonte
who particularly recommends the steamed buns with tofu
I also make hallongrottor (jam cookies) at the home of Scottish ex-pat Rob
But I am not a regular visitor to Sweden – in fact it’s my first trip – nor am I unusually talented at making new friends and persuading them to let me in on the secrets of local life
I have been introduced to a variety of Gothenburg residents via Meet the Locals
an initiative recently launched by the West Sweden Tourist Board
the project has already been compared to the early days of Airbnb
when the appeal of staying in a stranger’s home lay not only in cut-price accommodation
but also the opportunity to meet someone who might offer insight into the local area
there are 20 “locals” to connect with in the Gothenburg area
View image in fullscreenCycle tours are one of the Meet the Locals opportunitiesActivities range from jogging in the Änggårdsbergen nature reserve with Johan
to experiencing the fika tradition of coffee and cake in the nearby town of Alingsås (with enthusiast Gunilla
as well as the best spots in town to do it)
Locals' insider knowledge of the region is key to experiencing the city but avoiding tourist hotspotsLess formal than a tour guide but more decorous than the average Tinder date
it feels more akin to an exchange programme
with those we meet eager to demonstrate the best of their city (and many experiences are free)
The only requirement of locals is that they are individuals
rather than businesses (visitors simply look online to see what’s on offer and the tourist board puts them in touch)
I go with a friend – although the scheme is perfect for solo travellers eager not to spend an entire trip alone – and on our first night we meet up with Erik
We’re in luck: it’s Gothenburg’s Culture Night
and there are plenty of bands to choose from
Erik is happy to tailor his live music suggestions to visitors’ tastes (and also offers to take people on a bike ride along the scenic Göta Älv river)

we head to the Sockerbruket Arena for more music

The plan is to walk around Lillelången lake
but rain drives us inside and we bake cinnamon buns at her nearby home – a former sanatorium where she lives in a modern collective with seven other families
We’re joined by her young daughter for a lunch of homemade split pea soup
followed by pancakes (a Thursday tradition in Sweden) and learn about life in the house: chores are shared between residents and one apartment functions as a kindergarten
we pick raspberries from her allotment and check out her “floating sauna” tethered on the lake
The amount of time spent with any one local varies depending on what you plan to do together
but their insider knowledge of the region is key to experiencing the city but avoiding tourist hotspots

a snug restaurant and night spot that he heartily recommends (we are not disappointed – the basement bar’s ice cold slushis prove delicious)
It’s also Jonte who escorts us to one of my favourite discoveries of our visit: Klädoteket
a “fashion library” which aims to combat excessive clothing consumption by allowing customers to rent (or buy) a range of vintage items
as well as new garments from small-scale Swedish designers
My friend borrows a silk skirt and a bracelet
while I pick up a chiffon top for the evening
before falling in love with a pair of high-waisted trousers that I can’t bear to return and end up buying
the option to borrow clothes seems ideal for visitors restricted to a hand-luggage wardrobe
