and costumes filled the room for May’s fourth annual “Boo Bash” Trunk or Treat
an early Halloween celebration that’s more than just spooky fun
The proceeds of the event support a young girl's battle with cancer
The bash usually held outside as a traditional trunk-or-treat was moved indoors due to rainy weather
“It gives families a second chance to utilize their costumes
They’re very expensive and to be able to have a second chance to wear them in warmer weather," said Janiece
This year’s bash carries a deeper meaning — dedicated to 9-year-old Evelyn
recently diagnosed with lymphoma on Christmas Eve
She’s not only the inspiration for the event
She loves to draw and even through treatment her spirit has not died down
She’s still very bright and very bubbly personality that has not left her," said Janiece
To help Evelyn and her family with medical expenses
proceeds from raffle baskets and donations will go directly to support her care
where funds helped others in the community
Her fight is our fight," said Karen Casanova
People can come in and get new costumes if they don’t have the income for it — or they can get food
and just have a good time," said Janyah
Costumes were also available at the Boo Bash or could be donated

'I Was Honey Boo Boo' premieres Saturday
I was first introduced to the phrase "boo basket" in September
when I saw women I know sharing posts to their Instagram stories
"I wish someone would make me a boo basket." I find the over-commodification of fall extremely annoying and tend to begrudge anyone who wants to rush through the final weeks of summer to get to "sweater weather" and "cozy season" or whatever
so I instantly knew this was not going to be something I enjoyed
Boo baskets started appearing on TikTok and Reels—and sure enough
people I know in real life started to talk about receiving them
If you have yet to be inundated by the "boo basket" craze
And here I thought Halloween couldn't get more saccharine
there's a note attached saying you have to give one to someone else
I remember my mom getting suckered into things like that when I was younger; the ladies at church would not have looked kindly on her breaking the chain
She always paid those forward and I don't know if it's because she enjoyed doing it or didn't want to jeopardize the social order
So if it's easy for you to whip something up and you don't want to find out what will happen if you don't
Halloween is just straight-up not a gift-giving holiday and we are two months away from the actual gift-giving holidays
I've reviewed dozens of videos about the creation of boo baskets
If you must make a boo basket or simply want to
What are you going to do at Christmas to top it
maybe some cute seasonal decor from the dollar section at Target
and it's not as life-or-death as people online are making it seem
like taking your loved one to a fall fair or picking some apples
We don't have to hop onto every trend just because the algorithms are shoving them in our faces

When I was growing up, my dad would go all out for Valentine’s Day for me and my four siblings: a pancake breakfast
each plate hosting some combination of a little teddy bear holding a heart
really — what people would call an OTT (over the top) parent
it was clear the teddy bear had been repurposed from last year’s forgotten yield
the card had the part someone else had written on cut off
and to a kid who was in no way deprived but not
to experience that sweet “treat your kids” moment without the intrusion of the digital gaze

Reading some of the comments on the Reddit threads and Facebook groups where the contents or validity of boo baskets is being discussed
you would think we were talking politics or participating in a senior seminar on feminist ethics
Some commenters are aghast at the idea of one more parental act (let’s be honest
as most things child-related do these days
involves buying a bunch of crap (“Utterly needless consumerism!” fumed a Reddit-head)
“Again I’m thrilled to not be parenting small children in this era.” In this light
the practice is a reminder of how we have become accustomed as parents (again
read: mothers) to maximizing every childhood moment and signaling to others that we have done so
Others want to be left alone to enjoy their OTT ways. What if you just love Halloween or come from, as one Reddit poster said, “a very spooky family”? Kids are only young once; next year, they’ll be having sex and growing facial hair and won’t give a damn about jack-o’-lantern pajamas. After all, care is a sacred act
and if filling spider-shaped bags with popcorn for your little ones feels sacred to you
The part of my father’s parenting brain that prepped for holidays was free from many things mine is not — social-media influencers sharing reels of their happy children
the Target Dollar Spot calling to me with its seasonal siren song of absolute garbage I am momentarily convinced will make my kids feel loved and ameliorate some of the effects of what the ambient soundtrack of the internet tells me is likely terrible parenting
and what we can cast off because it doesn’t serve us
having actual fun isn’t as simple as making heart-shaped pancakes — it’s sifting the bullshit from the delight
It’s trying to listen to ourselves and our children amid a level of noise that is

So when Helen said she was going to a wedding in Australia and would I look after Little Boo for a week
saying yes felt like slipping my head back into a favourite noose
He is part chihuahua and part something smaller
He arrived with a bag of accoutrements: there’s a tiny coat he’s supposed to wear when it’s chilly; his brush is little bigger than a toothbrush; his treats were made for cats; and his pretty little leash is no more substantial than a length of string
I am to feed him 50g of dog roll in the morning and 50g in the evening
Inside his skull is an ancestral self-image of something between a jackal and a wolf
When Little Boo looks in a mirror – a mirror stood at ankle height – he sees White Fang
Little Boo is into his teens and the teens for a dog are the years of reduction
Time has sucked the colour from his muzzle
It’s rotted some of his teeth which then had to come out
giving him a grin that caves in on one side
It’s dimmed his eyes and it’s all but deafened him
Little Boo sleeps deep for nine-tenths of the day
Twice today I have stolen out of a room while he’s been sleeping and he has not noticed
But I have only stolen out to make a coffee and return
When he thinks something good is about to happen
he flings himself in circles with the thrill of it
I don’t recall when I last threw myself in circles with the thrill of it
a spaniel tried to befriend both him and me
sniffing around Little Boo and then dropping a ball at my feet for me to throw
his nose remains as sharp as a pen and a nose is everything to a dog
Later on that walk he stopped and sniffed the air like any foxhound
He went scrabbling up through scrub and I whistled him but I might as well have whistled Jesus
The call of the ancestors rang in his skull
batting aside the vegetation he passed under
nose to the soil like a hound on the scent
and then he stopped and sniffed the air once more and doubled back and there
Curled in its coat of spines it was about half his size
The television showed ranks of cardinals all dressed in capes and hats
I looked at Little Boo asleep beside me and couldn’t see much point in being pope

Wanting to play on both sides of the football and being able to play on both sides of the football are two very different things
Tennessee sophomore Boo Carter continues to take productive steps to that rare college accomplishment
who starred at Chattanooga Christian as a sophomore and junior and at Bradley Central as a senior
made an impressive splash last season with the Volunteers
He started each of the last six games at the "star" position in the secondary and also took over as his team's primary punt returner
after Tennessee had been eliminated by eventual national champion Ohio State in the first round of the inaugural 12-team playoff
Carter went to Vols coach Josh Heupel with the desire to play on offense as well moving forward
Carter was spotted at slot receiver on the second day of spring workouts
and he is continuing to manage this sizable balancing act as the Vols prepare for Saturday afternoon's Orange & White spring game inside Neyland Stadium
"When you do this, there is a whole other workload that you've got to take on," Heupel said Monday in a news conference. "Because you've got to understand what's going on with both sides of the football. He's done a really good job, and he's spent a lot of time in here learning what we're doing offensively and being able to handle the structure of the offense
"We're intentional in terms of what positions we're putting him in through the course of practice and today during the scrimmage and trying to manage that side of it."
Monday's closed scrimmage was the second of the spring for the Vols
who will practice again Wednesday and Friday before their annual April showcase
The Orange & White contest is scheduled to start at 2
with the capacity being limited to 45,000 due to construction in Neyland
Carter racked up 38 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack last season, and he returned his one interception for 9 yards in the 33-14 win over Mississippi State. He also had 12 punt returns for 198 yards
a 16.5-yard average which would have ranked among the top five nationally had he reached the minimum number of returns to qualify
is widely regarded as the Southeastern Conference's most versatile player of the modern era
Bailey had 47 receptions for 744 yards (15.8 yards per catch) and five touchdowns
four punt returns for 49 yards (12.3) and three interceptions
343 offensive snaps and 120 snaps on special teams for a total of 1,070 snaps
Bailey finished seventh in the balloting for the 1998 Heisman Trophy
was the seventh overall pick of the 1999 NFL draft and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019
"You've got to have a guy who has the durability and the training to keep his body in shape to play that many snaps
especially if you're going to use him for more than 10 or 15 snaps on offense," Jim Donnan
"You've got to have the intelligence to understand the offense
You can't just have a couple of plays for him
because everybody else will figure it out pretty quickly
I got the idea when I was at Marshall and had Troy Brown
who played 15 years with the Patriots and played some both ways there
"The biggest thing is that you've got to have the athletic ability and the football intel
because you want to get your best players on the field and give you the chance to win."
What may be best aiding Carter in this difficult quest isn't the fact he earned a spot on the SEC all-freshman team but also on the SEC's academic honor roll for the fall semester
"You can look at him as a punt returner as far as seeing his skill set when he has the ball in his hands that he's got a chance to be a dynamic playmaker."

Hearts have melted online over a bird's priceless reaction to seeing his previous owner for the first time since life-changing surgery
Boo, a 40-year-old cockatoo
and was rescued during a police raid nearly 25 years ago
made Boo unadoptable as an animal companion
However, despite his past, a woman, Nedra, decided to adopt the bird anyway. During her five years with Boo, she learned that he was the furthest thing from being the horrible creature that people labeled him
causing him to become stressed and lose weight
Nedra wanted him to be in a better home where he could thrive
"He had no muscle mass and couldn't fly … he couldn't sit on a perch because he didn't have strong-enough muscles."
Hurst began helping Boo regain his strength and confidence, which came with "a lot of hand feeding." When Boo started feeling and looking better, she began exploring the idea of surgery to help with his cataracts.
Boo received "life-changing surgery" in March at NC State College Veterinary Hospital in North Carolina that helped restore his vision
Boo has been acting like a kid again instead of a 40-year-old bird
and Hurst wanted Nedra to see him in his new state
Thankfully, Nedra lives only 20 minutes away, and she recently made the drive to see her old pet, as she does from time to time. Hurst calls Boo their "joint custody" bird and filmed the animal's reaction to seeing his previous owner for the first time in his life. The video was shared to the TikTok account @birdsinthedoghouse on March 29
Boo immediately started jumping up and down on his perch
His beak stayed open with his feathers sticking straight up
The two looked at each other in amazement as he could finally see the woman who gave him a second chance
Boo's progress since surgery has blown Hurst away
but she said he flew from his perch down 4 feet for the first time
Hurst is looking forward to Boo joining her again in animal-assisted therapy programs
the bird works with residents at assisted living homes
"He's not just a bird who got his sight back
but he's a poster child of resilience," Hurst said
TikTok users immediately fell in love with Boo
cheering for the heartwarming reunion between him and his previous owner
Such a beautiful thing," commented one person
A third user wrote: "This is beyond precious

It feels like Halloween has become a monthlong affair and an ever-growing expense and burden for parents
On top of that, there's a growing trend of parents giving kids "boo baskets" full of Halloween-themed gifts and trinkets
They can include less-expensive treats like candy
and stuffed animals to bigger-ticket items like clothes
My kids already have too much stuff
or try to sell things on Facebook Marketplace to try to clear out clutter
With both their birthdays and Christmas in the coming months
I already know we're going to be inundated with new things we don't particularly need
Doing a boo basket would mean I'd deliberately be adding more knickknacks into the mix
I could use a similar strategy that I use for the Easter Bunny
where I focus on things that my kids actually need
such as a new bathing suit for summer instead of the seasonally themed tchotchkes I've seen in most boo baskets on social media
I want to create lasting traditions so that my girls can look back on their childhoods and reminisce about the things we did every year to celebrate various holidays. For something to be a tradition, it needs to be repeated consistently, and I want to be mindful of what those things are and what they cost.
While I want to create magic for them, I don't think that means I need to spend a ton of money.
Going on a spooky walk to see all the decorations in the neighborhood, counting and sorting Halloween candy together, or picking up pumpkins from the farmers market and carving them as a family are traditions that will be just as meaningful as spending money on a boo basket every year. If I were to put together Halloween presents one year, I worry I'd feel trapped into continuing each year.
Every family is different, and for some, boo baskets are a staple Halloween tradition that brings both moms and kids a lot of joy. For me, though, it's not something we'll ever do.
As a child not having my favorite sports in my hometown stung
but the Expos move to DC perfectly aligned with the emotional rollercoaster of being a young kid
it was right when the Nationals were getting good
The pain of growing up as a Nationals fan was unmatched
As a 12-year-old playing Little League baseball in Northern Virginia, every single kid wanted to be 19-year-old Bryce Harper. The play with your hair on fire montra, his violent swing, and his passion for the game, Bryce Harper could do no wrong in the eyes of a Nationals fan
Today in 2012, a 19 year old @Nationals rookie named Bryce Harper made his debut. pic.twitter.com/HrTIWAGmrr
As a 19-year-old he spearheaded an improbable Nationals run to the playoffs
and remarkably the ability to play all three outfield positions well
even though he was still getting used to the position as he grew up playing catcher
This resulted in him running away with the Rookie of the Year Award
setting expectations sky-high heading into his age 20 season in 2013
Random Nationals Highlight Day #27:Rookie Bryce Harper Steals Home on Sunday Night Baseball- 05/06/2012In his 8th game as a pro after being intentionally plunked by Cole Hamels, Bryce Harper steals home to take the 1-0 lead. The game the Phillies became afraid of the Nats. pic.twitter.com/OQy2eJdNtx
Although his career was off to an amazing start
it is not crazy to say he was a slight disappointment
since he was one of the most hyped prospects of all time
Harper being my favorite player did not stop my belief in him
The best season I have ever seen in my lifetime
For another season of high expectations in DC
Harper put it all together in 153 games in 2015
Harper led the league in on-base percentage
finishing the season with a 198 wRC+ and 9.3 fWAR
Harper became the 5th youngest Unanimous MVP of All Time as a 23-year-old
with his perfect season allowing Bryce to live up to the hype as one of the greatest prospects of all time
The sky was the limit for Bryce Harper in DC
Little did we know at the time, that 2016 season became the beginning of the end. After starting off the season hot, Bryce and the Nationals headed into Chicago for a three-game series against Joe Madden and the up-and-coming Cubs. No one could have predicted this series would live in infamy. With a struggling Ryan Zimmerman batting in the cleanup spot between Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy
breaking a record in the final game of the series
Madden caught a lot of flack for it at the time
especially in the Nationals clubhouse with comments from Tanner Roark and manager Dusty Baker
7 years ago, Bryce Harper WALKED a record-tying six times and was hit by a pitch in a 13-inning game. pic.twitter.com/qg7nlxuFa2
What happened after that series is something weird that I still cannot explain
After slashing .286/.406/.714 with 9 home runs over his first 22 games
being a below average bat in the second half of the season hovering around a .700 OPS
always leaving everything he could on the ballfield
Harper seemingly was on his way out over the last few seasons in DC
and the talks of staying in Washington for the rest of his career quickly subsided
it was all but certain he would not be in a Washington Nationals uniform for Opening Day of 2019
He gave me moments that I will never forget
His rookie year and MVP seasons may never be seen again from a Washington Nationals prospect
The Nationals allegedly never gave him the offer that he wanted
Because I have some information that most people do not know
I was friends with someone that I will not give their name away
but their dad was someone very notable in the DC sports world
As high school aligned with the Bryce Harper free agency discourse
I was always told one thing: Bryce Harper was waiting for the day to become a Philadelphia Phillie
I had the thought in the back of my mind for years heading into his free agency
and after a dramatic drawn out process (that I am sure Bryce hated getting attention for) what do you know
and wanted to be a part of an iconic franchise for the rest of his career
After first hating Bryce for going to the "enemy" the 2019 World Series run
I would always hate matching up against him over ten times per season
but at least we had the ring to cover for it
But my biggest problem with Bryce is what came in the years after
Bryce Harper in Games 6-7 of the NLCS after wearing all black for the Diamondbacks “funeral”:0-7 🥶3 strikeouts 💔“When the lights are the brightest, Bryce shows up.”144 years and 2 World Series victories for the Philadelphia Phillies.Goodnight, MVBryce. Maybe next year. pic.twitter.com/FzZ3jbhzZe
albeit with less AAV than what Washington offered
he was quickly embraced after a down first season
before going on attack vs the Nationals again
saying "I wish I began my career in Philadelphia"
The young teenager that I felt like I grew up with and came to love as a player
disappointing hitter that the Nationals could never win in the playoffs
after plotting for years to become a Philly
and then continually bases Washington any chance he can get
I have no interest in rooting for Bryce Harper
nothing will change the way how I view Bryce Harper
I will never root for a traitor like that for the rest of my life
here is what a true Nationals legend looks like:
“They created something that was their own.” Jayson Werth is pumped for his former team. pic.twitter.com/oS99oi4Enw

\"Why do Nats fans boo Bryce Harper\" conversation
I might as well weigh in with some information not everyone is considering
Why this newer holiday tradition is more burdensome than bewitching
Home / Holidays / Halloween
the little basket of Halloween goodies parents are giving to their children
sometimes under the auspices of a friendly family witch
I had an immediate knee-jerk negative reaction
But as spooky season progressed, I counted the ways we were celebrating Halloween
Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to have one big dump of all the Halloween bric-a-brac at once rather than spreading it throughout the season as our defenses gradually lower
After all, if it were a one-time occasion, we could anticipate its arrival, calculate the cost and have a snappy “You already got your Halloween treats for the year” comeback in the checkout line. Think about it: Americans spend literally billions on Halloween
And if everything was accounted for before the season and all of its celebrations
it is culturally appropriate to hang skeletons from the front door and wear costumes to school
But just because I’m on board with the idea of Boo Baskets
Here’s how I plan on implementing our family’s Boo Basket this year
Start with a list of what you expect to spend money on this spooky season. For us, that includes real pumpkins on the front porch, trick-or-treat candy, costumes and some seasonal extras like themed coloring books
Come up with a general budget and stick to it
Decide what items you have strong opinions about
Want to give out something other than candy this year
How can your Halloween purchases reflect your family’s goals and priorities
so I tend to assemble higher quality purchases into costumes
the year both of my daughters were Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service
a big bow and a dark dress to make a great costume that now enjoys a robust post-Halloween life as wardrobe staples
Mark a date on the calendar for your Halloween kick off
playing a spooky playlist and maybe even finishing with a spooky movie
But you can make that date any day that works for your calendar because there isn’t one culturally mandated “start of Halloween” (yet)
Maybe you want to make your start tied to a day of the week
rather than a date that may fall on a busy work day
give it a day and then lean hard into Halloween
Let your kids know when your spooky season kickoff will be
Create a tradition that celebrates more than just the stuff
Ritualizing seasonal gifts takes pressure off the gifts themselves as the tradition itself takes center stage
Maybe that looks like Boo Baskets in your family or maybe it’s a special family trip to the pumpkin patch or making costumes together or just giving everyone $5 and heading to the dollar store together
Our family will not be creating a witch who drops stuff off because
it’s hard enough to keep one mythical gift-giving lie going and Santa has precedence
Keep the focus on your family and be flexible
Don’t worry about what Boo Baskets or traditions the neighbor kids (or Instagram moms) have
The point of your family traditions is that they are for your family and they are fun

MONTREAL — Fans in Montreal loudly booed the U.S
national anthem prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off game between the Americans and Canada on Saturday night
It's the second time "The Star-Spangled Banner" drew that reaction in two games the United States has played at the NHL-run international tournament
And it came after public address announcer Michel Lacroix asked the crowd
"In the spirit of this great game that unites everyone that you kindly respect the anthems and the players that represent each country."
far more of the fans at Bell Centre booed than Thursday night before the U.S
The booing began when warrant officer David Grenon of the Royal Canadian Air Force Band started singing and lasted the entire length of the song
defenseman Zach Werenski said after beating Canada 3-1 and quieting the crowd of over 21,000
it's been happening in the NHL before this and we knew tonight was going to be the same way
goaltender Connor Hellebuyck said he "paid no attention to" the booing
we sing it for the troops that protected our freedom
Werenski said it provided some fuel with the U.S
We used it as motivation the best we could and found a way to get a win
who fought Canada's Brandon Hagel off the opening faceoff
setting off a series of three bouts in nine seconds
said it had nothing to do with the anthem booing
players felt it added to the fun of the night
that was pretty cool for all of us I think," said winger Jake Guentzel
"There's a lot of excitement from our team coming out for warmups and just seeing how packed it was
anthem at NHL and NBA games since President Donald Trump began making repeated references to the country becoming "the 51st state." Trump also threatened tariffs against the country
prompting backlash from a close neighbor and longtime ally
Asked Friday at practice about fans booing the U.S
veteran Canada defenseman Drew Doughty voiced opposition to it
and I understand the Canadians' frustration
but I think we should respect the anthems and stuff like that," Doughty said

Boo Carter began his journey as a two-way player for Tennessee football on Monday
alternating from defensive back to wide receiver during practice
He's not just doing an impression of Travis Hunter
who won the Heisman Trophy as a two-way player at Colorado last season
Playing offense and defense is something Carter did as a Tennessee Titans Class 6A Mr
And it’s what he wanted to continue doing when he came to UT a year ago
Carter is now getting his wish in his second spring practice
Carter earned SEC All-Freshman honors as a defensive back and punt returner
the first half of practice was open to media
providing of glimpse of how Carter is juggling multiple positions
Carter was at his usual starting position at Star
and a manager put a white vest over his orange jersey
He rotated in at slot receiver and caught two passes from quarterback Nico Iamaleava
where his open-field skills could be a weapon
Then he made a diving catch on a short pass
How Boo Carter talks trash from both sidesThe transition looked seamless
Then Iamaleava joined the conversation with a few instructions
Carter re-entered the lineup at slot receiver
returned to the defensive side and immediately stepped in at nickelback
with whom he had just been discussing receiving routes a few minutes earlier
he wasn’t fooled when Staley tried to get open on the ensuing play
But the double duty produced a funny moment
when Carter's playful trash-talking extended to both sides of the football
his chatter toward the receivers kept going
and he was chirping," freshman wide receiver Travis Smith said
Boo has a bright future on both sides of the ball because he knows (defensive) keys that us receivers don't know."
GEORGE MACINTYRE Why freshman QB wanted to run Josh Heupel's offense
Juggling two positions will be a work in progress for Carter
Coaches don't want his defensive play to slip while he moonlights on offense
Coach Josh Heupel will determine how much Carter plays on offense
But defensive coordinator Tim Banks said defense is still Carter's primary role
"Boo understands that he's a defensive back for us," Banks said
"The goal every year is to be the last man standing
so we're doing anything we can to give everybody an opportunity to grow
His role on offense will be dictated by (Heupel)
(Carter) seems to be handling it very well."
Carter was accustomed to playing both ways in high school
he racked up 1,795 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns
That included 55 receptions for 911 receiving yards and 12 TDs
He also had 102 tackles and two interceptions on defense and two returns TDs on special teams that season
Carter did the same at Chattanooga Christian as a junior in 2022
780 receiving yards and 28 total TDs while earning all-state honors as a two-way player
As a recruit, Carter was listed as an athlete rather than receiver or defensive back. He was ranked the No. 4 athlete in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports Composite
And he could've signed at virtually any school as either a receiver or defensive back
He was a starter by midseason and a difference-maker not long after that
one interception and three quarterback hurries in 2024
Carter was even a quicker study at punt returner
which would’ve led the SEC and ranked fourth nationally if he had enough return attempts to qualify
Now Carter will try to expand his role to all three phases of the game
He’s got the rest of spring practice and the fall to learn how to juggle everything on his plate for his sophomore season

It started off with what sounded like a single “Booo!!” — one that that nevertheless empowered hundreds of fans to open their mouths and jump right in
Before you knew it, Bridgestone Arena was experiencing one of the stranger moments in its history: a solid segment of Nashville supporters loudly booing during the playing of the Canadian national anthem
which was sung by Cathy Mullins prior to Monday’s game between the Predators and Ottawa Senators
But it was noisy and noticeable enough to leave a mark
“I kind of just caught the tail end of it,” Predators coach Andrew Brunette said
I don’t think we should boo any anthem either way.”
Why in the world would Predators fans be booing the Canadian national anthem
which is customarily played before games — along with the U.S
national anthem — when NHL teams from the two countries meet
The first shot in "Anthem-gate" was fired over the weekend in Canadian cities, when fans in Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto (at an NBA game) booed the U.S. national anthem
likely in response to President Donald Trump announcing significant tariffs on imports from Canada
Monday’s game between the Predators and the Senators — the only contest on the NHL schedule that night and a 5-2 loss for the hosts — apparently offered an opportunity for some Nashville fans to deliver vocal retaliation
The fact that Trump earlier in the day had pressed pause on the tariffs
granting a 30-day reprieve to Canada and Mexico
“I don’t really think there’s a place to be booing the anthem
“You can have your political views and your ideas
But I just think both countries have been amicable for so long
They’ve been partners in this great game of hockey
and I just don’t think it’s the right thing to do
Country singer Luke Bryan delivered the U.S
with nary a sound coming from the few Senators supporters scattered around the building
During a brief instant of silence in the song
Predators fans took to cheering on their team
features a Canadian-born general manager (Barry Trotz)
Canadian-born coach in Brunette and nine Canadian players — including top talents like Steven Stamkos
saying anthems shouldn’t be turned into political statements by either side
to remember those who have served their respective nations
“The anthem is not made for political views,” Marchessault said
“It’s made for respecting the veterans in both countries
That’s something that everybody — same thing in Canada
we’re respecting the veterans and the people that defend our countries
It’s bigger than just trying to give a shot to the other country
People need to think a little further than that.”
If there was any silver lining to the anthem controversy in Nashville
perhaps it was that it took some attention away from the Predators’ on-ice product
suffering their fifth straight defeat in a stretch that has seen them outscored 20-8
Nashville fans have trudged out of Bridgestone following plenty of losses this season
But this one came with an added — and unusual — memory
“I thought it was a little weird,” O’Reilly said of the anthem booing
“Don’t think you should be booing for that.”

the Phillies are hosting the Miami Marlins for a three-game series
after putting up six runs in thirst two innings
Saturday's game gave the home crowd a little bit more excitement
Philadelphia started the scoring by putting up four runs in the third inning
The team entered the ninth with a comfortable 11-4 lead
manager Rob Thompson decided to hand the ball to their big-name signing
Romano entered the game with 9.00 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched. He has not been himself this season, and the Philly faithful have been getting more and more impatient
Saturday put the fans over the edge and made them turn on the right-hander
allowed six hits and he gave up six earned runs
Dane Myers and Liam Hicks both hit their first home runs of the season off the reliever
Hicks' homer happened to be the first of his career
When the 31-year-old was relieved from the game
it was the first time in his career that Romano allowed more than three runs in an outing
Jordan Romano is showered with boos as he leaves the game in the ninth inning
He allowed six runs in 2/3 inning. He had never allowed more than three runs in a game in his career
He had three scoreless outings in a row heading into this game
but he took two steps back with this appearance
Teams are now hitting .382 off Romano with three home runs
On the season as a whole, Romano is in just the eighth percentile in chase rate and 20th percentile in walk rate.
His stats do suggest he is getting a bit unlucky, though.
The former 10th-round pick has an expected opponent batting average of just .225, and an expected ERA of 4.07. Both of those numbers are significantly lower than his real stats. Additionally, Romano has allowed a low average exit velocity, a low hard-hit percentage and a low barrel percentage.
Still, he is not having a great season, and he seems to be in trouble every time he takes the mound. In fact, he has allowed at least one baserunner in seven of his nine outings. He has also allowed runs in four of his nine appearances.
Romano has shown signs of improvement this year, but he remains inconsistent. If he can find some consistency, Philadelphia will have a shutdown bullpen arm they can turn to. For now, that is not the case.

he doesn’t so much ‘roll away’ as he simply ‘keeps going’
It is bizarre and impressive and follows in a long line of DGK skaters who value style as much as complexity; who don’t just do hard tricks

As exciting as Tennessee basketball is right now
forget not that spring football is resuming
Dynamic athlete Boo Carter has stirred up some what-if
Danny hasn’t yet moved the drills to the stadium and tried for three sellouts each week
Boo is campaigning for triple duty – defensive back
He told Vol recruiters that was what he wanted to continue doing
Travis Hunter gathered fame and fortune as a two-way player at Colorado
He might be able to sometime sell Bush’s beans as does Peyton Manning
There were unsettling Boo days early in this off-season
a rumor in the wind that another school had offered a larger NIL payday
He had earned Southeastern Conference all-freshman recognition
He took over the Star position at midseason and made a difference for the defense – 38 tackles
one interception and three quarterback hurries
Boo and his guidance council didn’t issue a public threat of transferring but he did receive a raise
Some in the great Vol Nation don’t realize college football used to be an iron-man game
a vigorous test of endurance and willpower
Players earned positions based on versatility
There were no 330-pound offensive linemen because they couldn’t play chase-and-catch defense
Great quarterbacks were also safeties who broke up enemy pass plays and tried to tackle breakaway runners when there was no other choice
Jim Thorpe was an all-time great running back and defensive back for Carlisle
1911-12 and other years at his convenience
He was good enough that eligibility wasn’t a factor
fullback and defensive tackle at Minnesota
won the only Heisman Trophy ever awarded to a player from a losing team
There are many great athletes now doing only what they do best
good enough for Boo to use as measuring sticks:
Hunter won the big award as a wide receiver and defensive back
AP and Sporting News national player of the year awards
the Bednarik and Lott IMPACT Trophy for defensive player of the year
the Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player and the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver
He had 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns
Hunter’s other measurables were four interceptions and 15 passes defended
The NFL will tell us what is his top talent
He became a five-star recruit who said he was going to Florida State but flipped on signing day to Jackson State “to learn and grow under one of the greatest football players and most versatile athletes in history
three interceptions and seven pass breakups plus 47 catches
744 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 1998
had seven interceptions and 11 catches for 231 yards and three touchdowns (two receiving and one rushing) in a unanimous All-American
picked off a pass in the end zone and had a 37-yard reception
As a favored son and Heisman promotional beneficiary of ESPN
Closing thought (a deliberate distraction): Woodson’s “Heistman” was more than a million or so Tennessee fans could tolerate
Peyton was not a two-way player but he was the No
was the fact that 110 trophy voters left Manning off their 1-2-3 ballots
My best Michigan friend has several times said “get over it.” Not yet
Note to Boo: No Vol has won the Heisman Trophy but two-way might help your chances
Personal reminder: Basketball resumes on Friday
Marvin West welcomes comments or questions from readers. His address is marvinwest75@gmail.com
Did Carl Pickens contribute as a two-way player at Tennessee
West’s westwords were right on target about bias voting by Big 10-ESPN voting block in the north and northeastern part of USA
This bias has been around for a long time
I am not a Tide fan-am a Tennessee graduate and “Vol for Life”
Good luck to the football Vols and Boo Carter
Peyton Manning was Left off 110 voters’ 1-2-3 Ballots
I’d really like to know the names of those voters
A gentle reminder that it was “that way” longer than it has been “this way.” IF Boo can do
A Heisman would be fine; ten wins would be better
since Spring Practice must be carried out in secrecy
Don’t want Alabama to hear how we scheme against blocking sleds
