Russian tyre maker JSC Cordiant announced completing rebranding of the former Continental tyre plant in Kaluga
The facility is now producing Gislaved tyres
thanks to a brand rights deal negotiated with Continental in May 2023
It appears the Gislaved name will also take centre stage when tyre production at the ex-Bridgestone factory in Ulyanovsk restarts

facility resumes manufacturing after two years of inactivity
Russia – Russian tire maker JSC Cordiant has resumed commercial production at the former Bridgestone factory in Ulyanovsk
The official launch was held during a 19 March ceremony attended by Cordiant CEO Vadim Volodin and Alexey Mordashov
Cordian started the trial runs at the plant in November last year after being idle for two and a half years
the unit currently has the capacity to produce 2.4 million units of passenger car tires
the unit is claimed to be "one of the most modern full-cycle tire enterprises in the Russian federation” and has an overall capacity of 5,000 units/day
Producing Gislaved-branded tires, its product portfolio includes tires with standard sizes ranging from 13" to 19" - for cars
as well as tires homologated for supply to automakers as OE
Cordiant acquired the facility from Bridgestone in December 2023
following the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine
The launch "is important both for the sustainable development of the Cordiant holding and for the entire tire industry in Russia,” said Alexey Mordashov
The start-up will have stabilising effect on the market and will enable Cordian to meet the growing domestic demand
whose Severgroup acquired Cordiant last November

Cooper strives to make tires that outperform its status as a mid-range brand
Here we’ve selected two of its Discoverer winter products
and smaller SUVs) and Snow Claw (for light trucks)
Both are aimed at city driving and highway commutes
The True North features Cooper’s patented ‘Snow-Groove Technology’
scalloped sipes are designed to trap snow in the surface of the tire for greater traction
the compound has been built to stay flexible even in extreme cold
Both features helped True North to #1 in Consumer Reports’ winter tire rankings
The studdable Snow Claw was launched last winter as a complement to the True North
The SUV and pickup tire were snow-tested in four countries across three continents and also boasts the Snow-Groove tech
Cooper claims it has top-level braking performance on snow and ice
Proven technology from a winter tire specialist
If you spend a lot of time driving on ice then you’ll be best served by a studded winter tire
We suggest another Scandinavian entry to our list
the Nordman 7 from Finnish winter tire specialist
it employs technologies from previous generations of Nokian’s flagship Hakkapeliitta products but at a lower price
Road noise can be a concern with all winter tires but especially so with studded products
Nokian’s Air Claw Technology combines drop-shaped air dampers on the front edges of the tread blocks with an anchor stud
The result is claimed to be a reliable winter grip but with good stud durability
which keeps the stud upright by optimally tensioning the tread block during braking
The Nordman 7 has been on the market since 2017. As of 2023
Nokian has turned Nordman into a standalone brand
which is available in the US and Canada this fall
The studdable Nord Frost 200 generates grip on snow and ice with a combination of two different types of sipe (the small grooves in the tread of winter tires): 3D stepped sipes on the inside and 3D sinusoidal sipes on the outside
The combination is also said to improve wear performance
which is a common concern in low-cost winter tires
Meanwhile Gislaved notes an asymmetric pattern that combines an adjusted outer shoulder for better handling performance with a V-shaped inner area for better aquaplaning resistance and water flow
The Gislaved Nord Frost 200 is available in Canada exclusively at OK Tire
it’s a great option for only a small premium over an entry-level
Cold-weather performance at a budget price
Silica-reinforced compound enhances traction and flexibility in cold temperatures
Sailun is quickly establishing a track record of providing some of the best tires at affordable prices
this top pick was the IceBlazer WST1 (cars) studdable winter tire — the company’s biggest-selling winter product
with more than a million customers in Canada alone
The complementary WST 2 covered larger truck and SUV applications
the Sailun IceBlazer WST1 was replaced by the Sailun IceBlazer WSTX
The WSTX is the latest addition to Sailun’s Ice Blazer line and continues the tradition of being a studdable winter tire
It’s designed to offer improved performance over the WST1
featuring a silica-reinforced compound for better flexibility and stability in various winter conditions
making it a versatile choice for different vehicles
Sailun is part of Mesnac, one of the world’s leading tire technology companies. It has also invested in cutting-edge tire materials and environmental technology, including the EcoPoint3 technology
which should eventually find its way into Sailun’s winter products as well
There you have it: five cheaper winter tires to conquer Canadian winters without breaking the bank
before you hit the tire shop to buy a new set
below we outline some helpful tips to keep in mind before spending your hard-earned money
Bear in mind that not all tires will be available in the right size for your vehicle
so try to have a Plan B beyond your first choice.
think about the type of winter driving you do – urban
– and look for tires that suit the application
Some tires are better in slush or wet snow
Impartial tests such as those conducted by Consumer Reports are a great source of information
and look for recommendations from friends or colleagues who drive in similar conditions
Most cars, trucks, and SUVs sold in North America come with all-season tires that are designed to keep you moving in most conditions. Many are designated M+S (mud + snow) but will not perform at their best in temperatures below 7°C/45°F.
For regions of the US and Canada that experience these low temperatures for more than a few weeks a year
which carry the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) mark

Double SGP2 champion Mateusz Cierniak returns to Swedish champions Lejonen for 2025
Cierniak won league titles with Polish club Lublin and the Gislaved team this year
and he returns to join forces with Speedway GP star Dominik Kubera
Lions boss Anders Frojd said: “Mateusz is a fantastic guy
“He has now raced on all the tracks in the Bauhaus league one or more times and this experience is the next step for him to improve his away average
2024 SGP2 bronze medallist Mathias Pollestad is on his way to Smederna in the Bauhaus Elitserien
The Norwegian shooting star won the final round of the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship series in Torun to claim third place overall and hopes to build on his fine progress with Gorzow in the Polish leagues
Smederna boss Jerker Eriksson said: “We had contact with Mathias' management already last year
but for various reasons we did not come to an agreement then.
“When we were going to start building the team for 2025
we made early contact again and then it went quickly
He is a real tough guy who is also good from the tapes
We believe he will continue to make great strides and are happy to have him in the team for next season.”
Swedish international Timo Lahti has extended his stay with Dackarna into 2025
He joins forces with Danish racer Rasmus Jensen at the host club for the FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla
Dackarna team manager Rikard Kling said: “Of course we wanted to extend with Timo
and he immediately showed an ambition to stay
Timo and his team are also very popular among the other riders and the entire Dackarna organisation
“Timo really showed high class towards the end of the season where he had some real peaks
A fast-starting rider who can beat just about anyone
he was also the rider who raced the most matches at No.1 during 2024.”

Kaluga facility manufactured 2.7 million units of tires last year
Russia – Cordiant Group has progressed the ramping up of production at the former Continental tire plant in Kaluga which has been renamed as Gislaved
The facility produced 2.7 million units of passenger car tires
said deputy governor of Kaluga Vladimir Popov in a social media post 4 Feb
"operates efficiently and has integrated a new structure following its rebranding."
Cordiant acquired the facility in May 2023 as Continental existed Russia following the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine
the plant is “steadily increasing production volumes and expanding its product line.”
The unit ‘overfulfilled’ its production ramp-up by 23%
adding that 220 new tire sizes were also launched last year
set a ‘record shipment’ of 31,000 tires per day during 2024
the Kaluga facility has a nameplate capacity to produce 3.5 million units per year of passenger car and light truck tires
The Cordiant Group of Companies reports that the former Bridgestone tyre plant in Ulyanovsk
Russia – now rebranded as a Gislaved facility – has resumed operations
Cordiant shares that the relaunch of the Ulyanovsk facility begins with the production of a new Cordiant-branded summer tyre model
The plant’s product range will gradually expand in 2025
including the introduction of premium models under the Gislaved brand name
Winter tyre production is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2025

The Quebec winter tire law is already 10 years old
making it mandatory to have winter tires mounted from December 15 to March 15
at least 60% of drivers in the Prairies and 93% of drivers in New Brunswick equip their vehicles with winter tires
we have tested and compared hundreds of products
ranking the best… and the worst in the business
Tires have come a long way since the turn of the millennium
they grip much more on all kinds of icy and snowy surfaces and they are more comfortable
There are still products out there we would not recommend
as we prefer to mention the best in this new and updated 2018-19 Top 10 list
These products are meant for vehicles from small sedans and vans up to intermediate SUVs
We took about thirty tire models to our test area
Tests were conducted with an on-board computer and a dB meter
The program is thoroughly the same for each product: acceleration and braking
counting for a small percentage in the final standings
Readers may think the products remain the same from one test to another
but there are new products every year that can earn more points and find a berth in the final standings
There were a few contenders for the last spot in this list
General Altimax Arctic 12 or even Cooper WSC
the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT (Winter Reactive Technology) earned the last place because of its overall winter characteristics
Goodyear has a huge expertise in terms of winter products
with a catalogue of more than 14 sizes for cars
And Goodyear shares technology with its Dunlop division that also offers 15 more winter tire models
the Ultra Grip Ice WRT provides very good dry weather
but lacks grip in deep snow and slushy conditions
the Yokohama iceGUARD iG52c hit the target from day one and was always in our Top 10 list
The iG52c is designed for cars and small SUVs while its more aggressive iG52v sibling can supply large SUVs and pickups
The tread pattern shows a soft compound and largely siped blocks with plenty of void areas that can stop any vehicle on ice and hard-packed snow within reasonable distances while permitting a safe drive in deep snow and slush
this Yoko could provide more bite in curves
Consumers can expect good durability and the cost/value of this product is probably the best in our Top 10 list
The Pirelli Ice Zero FR was presented three years ago and can be compared to some extent to what Continental and Michelin offers
The tread pattern of the Ice Zero is directional and the rubber compound provides safe braking distances on ice and hard-packed snow
Road handling is predictable and also very smooth with a low sound level in the vehicle
the Pirelli Icecontrol model can be considered for consumers driving mostly in remote areas
Better would be the Ice Zero option with factory installed studs: there are only 20 sizes and the W-shaped tread pattern is different but grip on icy surfaces is maximized
The Pirelli exclusive studs are patented with a tungsten double-tip
the Toyo Observe GSi5 is the one-model-fits-all winter product
its prices are still affordable for a Japanese tire
The Observe GSi5 is an above-average performer on any kind of cold winter surface due to crushed walnut shells added to the compound
but could do better on wet and slushy tarmac
The sound level entering the passenger compartment could be reduced on bumpy roads
long-lasting product that addresses all type of vehicles
Toyo added the entry-level Observe G3-ICE (friction or factory studded) and the all new Observe GSi-6 HP
but the factory studded option should be considered
The new GSi-6 HP was developed for sport and luxury vehicles with low profile and higher speed index requirements
Continental is the biggest German tire manufacturer
Its winter tire line-up includes nine models
with the Winter Contact SI as top of the line for the last three years
after replacing the Extreme Winter Contact model
The Winter Contact SI features a directional v-shaped tread pattern with blocks filled with a compound—Polar Plus technology—that allows shorter braking distances
Numerous sipes absorb water and slush and provide a sound grip on hard-packed surfaces
they quickly get filled in deep snow and driving requires more attention
The Winter Contact SI allows a very smooth ride
and filters out noise from the passenger compartment
The brand’s retail network is also very wide
While many manufacturers are developing new products
the X-Ice Xi3 has seen better days since it was first presented in 2012: in fact
Bibendum`s winter proposal delivers the smoothest ride and durability
The Flex-Ice compound combined with the tread block design and the Micro Pump technology provides short braking distances on ice and hard-packed snow
but lacks grip in fresh snow and evacuating features in slush
Its retail network is the largest in the country
Originally a Swedish manufacturer and a long-time competitor to Nokian
Gislaved became a subsidiary of tire giant Continental AG
Gislaved’s footprint in Canada relies on the excellent Nord*Frost 200
successor to the previous Nord*Frost 100 and formerly Nord*Frost 3 and 5
but the product would benefit from better visibility
The Nord*Frost 200 deserves our attention: on dry or wet tarmac
road handling on a dry winter road is above average
The Nord*Frost 200 shows good value for retail index and it is available factory studded for only a few more loonies
The former Nord*Frost 100 is now manufactured as the General Tire Arctic Altimax 12
the Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 fares well and is still one of the top winter products on the market
Road handling on ice and snow remains a benchmark for its competitors
Considered as an ice tire because it cannot be studded
the WS80 provides strong road handling on snow
A long-standing rumour stating the Blizzak does not deliver longevity is totally false
Some sizes offers XL format and Run Flat characteristics
Blizzak products are available in almost every tire shop and car dealer
The Hakkapeliitta 9 came close to finishing on top
but lost a few points to the R3 in terms of comfort and ride smoothness
Both Nokian products came out strong in braking on icy surfaces and the Hakka 9 offers the best drive in deep snow
Consumers are still ambiguous about mounting studded tires
since they’re noisier and less comfortable; they can be mounted from October 15 to May 1st in Quebec
but are banned for people living in Southern Ontario and many indoor or residential parking facilities forbid them
Please note that all Hakka 9 sizes are XL certified
Another Nokian product worth putting on your shopping list is the Nordman 7
offered at lower prices and available with or without studs
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 is a friction (non-studdable) tire replacing the former R2
Not as grippy as its Hakkapeliitta 9 sibling in deep snow
the R3 is a knockout on icy and hard-packed surfaces
due to the design of its tread pattern and a bio ingredient called Cryo Crystal added to its compound that acts like mini studs
The R3 earned more points for its road handling and daily commuting drive characteristics
this is the best overall winter product and best balanced in this match
offers a few run-flat options and most sizes are XL format

Latvian racer Andzejs Lebedevs knows only perfection will do as he bids to realise his Speedway GP dream at the FIM GP Challenge in Gislaved on Saturday
Lebedevs is serving as this season’s first substitute rider for Speedway GP
He scored eight championship points at the Holmgrens Bil FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla on July 15 and six at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga last Saturday
Now the Daugavpils-born racer would like to become a full-time member of the Speedway GP series and could book his place in the line-up for 2024 with a top-three finish in Gislaved
He faces some stiff competition for qualification from current Speedway GP stars Jason Doyle
a former Lejonen rider who has accepted a late call-up for the FIM GP Challenge on his former Bauhaus Elitserien home track
The FIM GP Challenge gives 16 riders five races to potentially change their lives as they battle it out over a hard-fought 20 heats with only the top three scorers earning spots in Speedway GP for next season
One mistake or mechanical mishap could cost riders the chance of a lifetime
and Lebedevs is determined to strive for perfection in Sweden
He said: “Speedway GP qualification is my goal for this season
and I want to show a good result and good speedway
The GP Challenge is a one-day meeting and everything must be perfect – your luck
You can’t have any bad luck like a broken chain or something like this.”
Even if the starts in Gislaved do not go to plan
Lebedevs believes a top racetrack offers him a plan B
where it is not crucial just to make the start
“I raced there in a league meeting not long ago and I had a really good result – I scored 13 paid 14 points
That result gives me some more confidence for this meeting.
“Hopefully it will be my day and I come home with a big smile
and I can start my preparations for next season with big ideas.”
While Lebedevs will start among the favourites along with Doyle
the event features a host of former Speedway GP riders
bidding to regain their World Championship status
including former FIM Speedway World Cup winner Michael Jepsen Jensen of Denmark
Polish brothers Przemyslaw and Piotr Pawlicki and German ace Martin Smolinski
with hometown favourite Oliver Berntzon named at reserve on his home track
French racer Dimitri Bergé is bidding to build on a fine Monster Energy FIM SWC in Wroclaw last month and become his nation’s first Speedway GP rider
while former Polish champion Szymon Wozniak
current Speedway GP second substitute Jan Kvech and Danish star Frederik Jakobsen will also fancy their chances
Double Swedish champion Jacob Thorssell is the host nation’s sole representative in Gislaved and will be determined to follow compatriot and 2022 FIM GP Challenge winner Kim Nilsson in earning his place in Speedway GP
American racer Luke Becker hopes to start a new era for the USA in Speedway GP following his mentor Greg Hancock’s retirement
and Nicolas Covatti and Paco Castagna are vying to become Italy’s first full-time Speedway GP rider since Paco’s father and FIM Track Racing Commission director Armando Castagna competed in the 1998 series

OK Tire Kingston owner Erik Fielding explains what’s hot in winter tires this season
Join the conversation You can save this article by registering for free here. Or sign-in if you have an account
Selecting the right set of winter tires for your vehicle can be a daunting task — especially if you’re a first-time winter-tire user with minimal real-world experience on which to draw for your decision
winter tires exist across a wide range of prices
with some better-suited to certain conditions and vehicles than others
It tends to be that the right set of winter tires for you are the ones that
deliver the highest levels of performance and confidence in the specific winter driving conditions you’ll tackle regularly
Some winter tires are better for crossovers
Others still are better if your priorities include a quiet drive
or if you live in a northern locale and plan to add studs
Many variables affect how a winter tire will work for you and your family in the real world
Talking to an expert before making a decision
perhaps after reading through some owner reviews
is a great way to find a set that’s right for you
Erik Fielding is the owner of OK Tire in Kingston
I asked Erik which winter tires are the most popular with his customers this season
and whether he sees any differences in tire selection between customers that live in city and rural areas
you want to have a responsive tire that brakes when you need it
you get what you pay for when it comes to tires
When shopping for the best tire for your driving habits
look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol located on the tire sidewall
This symbol means the tires meet Transport Canada’s specific snow traction performance requirements and are designed for use in snow and cold conditions”
Get your instant cash offer in under 2 minutes
we’ll look at the five most popular winter tires at his store this season
as well as some of the differences between city and rural drivers
The Blizzak WS90 is the latest generation of one of the most popular winter tires on the road
An updated silica-enhanced rubber compound dials up the grip and enables supporting tweaks to the construction and tread of the tires
which capitalize on the modern compound for enhanced performance
“These are an excellent winter tire that perform well in both dry conditions and heavy snow,” Fielding says
noting these are the tires he personally runs on his family’s own vehicles
The Blizzak WS90 tires are one of the top-rated tires in North America
and are noted for strong stopping power and handling
Owner reviews tend to see these tires earning excellent scores across the board – even relating to treadwear – though dry-road performance typically lags slightly behind the other scores
After very recently test-driving a Subaru Crosstrek on these tires for eight hours
I can confirm the bare-pavement highway ride is quieter than I normally expect of a car equipped with winter tires
Fielding says the GSi 6 is a hot pick this season in a studless performance winter tire
this line of winter tire is ideal for sportier cars
Performance ratings see the GSi 6 tires earning top marks for ice traction and winter handling
with high scores for traction in wet or snowy conditions
Various advancements in tread design and rubber compound allowed engineers to improve both performance and treadwear
“These have similar characteristics to the Bridgestone [Blizzak]” says Fielding
“Both are premium tires and are comparable in price
Tread life is excellent; they wear out less and can potentially last an additional season
the Toyo GSi 6 tires feature several design elements that enhance the stiffness and bite from the tire sidewall and shoulder
I asked Fielding about some of the key differences in tire selection between shoppers in city and rural areas
one of the main differences is the use of studs
He sees increased use of studded tires in rural areas
but notes that results vary based on climate
but they’re not useful in the city,” he comments
When Erik’s rural shoppers want a studded tire
they tend to choose the NordFrost 200 from Gislaved
This is a Swedish manufacturer specializing in tires that excel in Nordic conditions
With both non-studded and pre-studded options available
NordFrost 200 tires are known for exceptional performance and grip in icy conditions
as well as short stopping distances on icy roads
Though scores for noise levels and dry-pavement performance scores lag slightly
and come with maximum marks for handing on snow and ice
Another hot-selling winter tire is the studdable Winterforce 2
With similar benefits to the Gislaved NordFrost 200’s
the Winterforce 2’s are designed for long-lasting all-condition performance for your coupe
Owner reviews give strongest marks for winter driving performance in snowy and wet conditions
The Toyo Celsius is one of Fielding’s top-selling all-weather tires
designed to be a year-round tire with enhanced wintertime capability
All-weather tires are intended for shoppers who choose to run a single tire all year round
with added confidence during mild winter driving conditions
“All-weather tires are seeing increased popularity over the last three years” says Fielding
“They’re wildly popular with snowbirds who may deal with varying conditions on their trip south or need increased traction for a short period — as they are mainly gone during the harsher months
They are convenient as they don’t require seasonal tire switch overs.”
Fielding notes all-weather tires like the Toyo Celsius are also popular among city dwellers who may not have extra space available to store their off-season tires
an all-weather tire will perform better than an all-season tire in light winter road conditions
though a dedicated winter tire will tend to deliver superior grip in more severe conditions
An all-weather tire may or may not be ideal for what you drive
“It’s always best to ask your tire expert if all-weather tires are a good fit for your vehicle and driving habits,” says Fielding
To Erik Fielding’s top-selling winter tires
I’ll add my personal favourite: the Michelin X-Ice Xi3
I run these tires on my own vehicles — including a Subaru Forester and a Volkswagen AllTrack
In the sort of winter conditions I face regularly
as well as polished hard-packed snow on the highway
I find the Xi3 tires turn in solid all-around performance
with one key attribute that stands out: braking bite
X-Ice tires have consistently impressed me with braking performance on these surfaces
an above-average braking “bite” on slippery surfaces when using these tires
This helps add confidence and control for drivers who frequent the highway in the dead of winter
It’s the key reason I’ve selected these tires as my personal favourite
Strong scores for performance and overall satisfaction across many owner reviews on these tires adds further peace of mind

Tetra Pak and Axjo Group are starting a feasibility study to build a new recycling plant for PolyAl from used beverage cartons in Gislaved
with a joint investment of up to Euro 24 million
The non-fibre component of carton packages
designates the layers of polymers and aluminium being used as a barrier against oxygen and humidity to protect food in beverage cartons
Axjo uses recycled PolyAl components from used Tetra Pak packages to create new packaging solutions for the wire and cable industry
The PolyAl recycling plant is planned to become operational during 2025
“This marks the start of implementing a completely circular economy for beverage cartons in Sweden
and shows that beverage cartons are a valuable resource that can be utilized over and over again in many applications,” says Alex Henriksen
Featuring an annual recycling capacity of 10.000 tonnes
the state-of-the-art plant will recycle and incorporate PolyAl into injection molded plastic products made by Axjo
Recycled „Greenology“ materials
“We are proud and excited to collaborate with Tetra Pak on this circular innovation project
The PolyAl raw material will be a crucial component in our new procurement strategy
Having access to large quantities of this raw material in our local area opens new opportunities for us to create recycled Greenology®* materials
This will provide our customers with something truly unique and sustainable
We also foresee that this will create new job opportunities in the municipality of Gislaved moving forward,” says Jacob Nilsson
The new plant is set to ramp up recycling of PolyAl for Sweden
Denmark and Norway to meet the circularity goals of the proposed EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
and showcases the pivotal role of recycling in helping the green transition of the food packaging sector
The industry has already invested approximately €200 million to increase the capacity for beverage carton recycling in the EU and plans to invest a further €120 million by 2027
Axjo identified the potential to use plastic for packaging purposes and is today the leader in producing spools
reels and drums in environmentally friendly plastics
Axjo has established a long-term collaboration with a number of global companies that use their solutions in their production
solutions that not only improve cost efficiency but also a secure transition to a new era and new technology
The former Continental tyre factory in Kaluga, Russia is taking on the Gislaved name and will operate under the management of Cordiant Joint Stock Company
Of the three brands the previous owner produced within the Kaluga plant
Gislaved is the only one for which S8 Capital gained usage rights when acquiring Continental’s Russian assets
The newly renamed Gislaved plant in Kaluga holds the capacity to produce 4 million tyres per year and currently produces Gislaved passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres in 13- to 21-inch rim diameters
Plans are in place to introduce new premium and mid-range brands in the near future
The Kaluga site employs more than 1,000 people and also includes a facility engaged in the production of automotive parts
shopping for snow tires is no less complicated than shopping for a new car
There are so many products out there that consumers don't know which way to turn
we’ve compiled our top 10 picks of the best winter tires on the market
Most of the manufacturers in our ranking are popular
Others like Gislaved and Vredestein are coming to the fore this year with new products and so we’ve added them to our winter comparison
we evaluated each tire on different winter surfaces (ice
A special thanks goes out to Autodrome Saint-Eustache
which made this possible by making a part of its facilities available to us last winter for computer measurements and several specific exercises
The tests also took place on side roads and sections of highways – in particular for our noise meter measurements – in order to corroborate all the data
The classic tests included accelerating and braking
a subjective score that accounted for a minuscule part of the overall evaluation added a personal touch and helped us finalize the ranking
The differences between certain products are minimal
# 1. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8
This tire is equally fantastic in snow and on ice
it is also available with studs installed directly at the plant
Drivers who prefer a smoother ride will appreciate its kid brother
which competes more directly with the Japanese and European ice tires
# 2. Bridgestone Blizzak WS80
The Bridgestone WS80 is the most recent addition to the Blizzak lineup
Its handling on ice is exemplary and the tread and shoulder block design make it extremely efficient in the snow
Its poor reputation for faster wear than its closest competitors is now ancient history
# 3. Michelin X-Ice Xi3
The technological improvements made by its rivals Hakka and Blizzak over the last few years have relegated Michelin X-Ice Xi3 from first to third place
it remains a yardstick in the category for its smooth ride and longevity
It offers very short braking distances and good handling on ice and hard snow
but loses a few points in heavy snow since the shoulder blocks of its treads are tightly woven and do not evacuate snow terribly quickly
# 4. Toyo Observe GSi5
The Observe GSi5 is a versatile ice tire that offers very good traction in all types of snow and slush
It’s a little less dynamic than the GSi5 on ice but you can get it with studs for improved grip on slippery surfaces
# 5. Continental Winter Contact Si
The Continental Winter Contact Si is a newcomer for 2015-2016
It picks up the torch from the Extreme Winter Contact whose asymmetrical tread suited performance cars but was a fish out of water when fitted on economical vehicles
the Winter Contact Si can handle itself on ice
V-shaped shoulder blocks are very quiet and good at filtering the road’s imperfections
# 6. Pirelli Ice Zero
Just like its rival the Continental Winter Contact Si
the Pirelli Ice Zero is a new winter tire this year
The tread features an asymmetrical design and a tread compound that makes braking distances short on ice
it has excellent handling and a quiet ride comparable to that of the Michelin X-Ice Xi3
Another version of the Ice Zero will also be available with factory-installed studs
The tread design is very different and there aren’t many sizes for the time being
The studs made with a tungsten tip are exclusive and their W shape is supposed to improve grip on slippery surfaces
# 7. Gislaved Nord Frost 100
Gislaved winter tires were long compared to Nokian products
but its Finnish rival’s technology left it behind over time
the Nord Frost 100 has an enviable reputation and rivals the efficiency of Hakkapeliitta tires in snow
it doesn’t come close to the Hakka family’s dexterity on ice
One powerful argument in its favour is its more affordable price
# 8. Yokohama iceGUARD iG52c
Yokohama winter tires are ranked among the best on the market and the iG52c is a worthy successor to the renowned iceGUARD iG20
its capabilities on ice and in slush are superior
Handling on dry surfaces is flawless and the smooth ride is exemplary
# 9. Vredestein SnowTrac 5
The Vredestein name is as evocative as Nokian and Gislaved in the world of winter tires
the Netherlands-based manufacturer was not able to match the pace set by Nokian
Bridgestone and the other big manufacturers
the SnowTrac 5 offers good handling on dry surfaces and good performance when braking and in curves on icy surfaces
Its distribution is very limited but it guarantees its user a certain amount of exclusivity
which will impress your friends and colleagues to no end
# 10. Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT
The Ultra Grip Ice WRT managed to squeeze into our top 10
but it could have been overtaken by one or many lesser known tires had we not taken its durability or large distribution network into account
it offers excellent handling on dry surfaces in very cold temperatures and a very comfortable ride
it also stood out during braking tests on icy surfaces
like many other ice tires that perform in good weather
Had we extended our list to a top 15 or 20
we could have found other good products such as the Hercules Avalanche R G2
Hankook i*Pike RS (W419) and BF Goodrich Winter Slalom KSI
a trio of products made in China that offer decent performance are the acclaimed GT Radial Champiro Icepro and the Maxtrek Trek M7 and Eskay Winter X
Portfolio includes former Continental and Bridgestone tire factories
has recently acquired Russian tire and automotive parts manufacturer Cordiant Group from private equity investor S8 Capital
The purchase includes Russia-based: Cordiant
Torrero and Gislaved passenger car tire brands; Cordiant Professional and Tyrex truck tire brands; and Meteor brands Auto
Severgroup said it sees potential for further development in the tire and automotive components markets using Cordiant as a platform
employs 8,000 people across four production plants
including the former Bridgestone and Continental tire factories in Ulyanovsk and Kaluga
respectively and two previously owned plants in Omsk and Yaroslavl
Cordiant Group also acquired the Russian assets of Germany's Bosch in Engels
"The assets of Cordiant became part of Severgroup during a very important period of transformation for the market,” said Severgroup in a recent blog post
The post stressed the importance of ‘effective management’ to help “localise” the Russian tires
auto components and equipment industry to satisfy the growing demand both in the mass and premium segments
“has vast experience in managing industrial companies that are recognised leaders in their industries.”
Severgroup aims to expand of the product line of tires and auto components with a focus on “a high level of product quality”

Five-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik returns to Swedish Bauhaus Elitserien champions Lejonen for 2025
Zmarzlik led the Gislaved team to its first league title since 2009 this year and sporting director Anders Frojd admits bringing back the record 26-time Speedway GP winner was always a major goal
He said: “The No.1 priority for us was to keep Bartosz
Already around the Bauhaus Elitserien final against Dackarna on September 17
we agreed with Bartosz on an extension.
“Bartosz wanted to stay with us and have an early announcement about an extension
Bartosz enjoys the club very much and likes his home track in Gislaved.
who in the pits gets involved with everyone in the team and shares his knowledge and tips.
“I am very proud that we at the Lions have managed to keep Bartosz over the 2025 season.”
Zmarzlik joins forces with the likes of Speedway GP rival Dominik Kubera
Speedway European Championship bronze medallist Kacper Woryna
Great Britain international Adam Ellis makes the move to Rospiggarna for 2025
having appeared for Vargarna during the 2024 season
Rospiggarna boss Mikael Teurnberg said: "Adam is a technical rider who has extensive experience on small
just like our home track in Hallstavik.
"We have been looking for a rider who can strengthen our performance on home soil
and Adam fits perfectly with what we are looking for
I hope he can take the next step in his development with us."
Four-time world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik will lead Lejonen’s bid for Bauhaus Elitserien glory in 2024 as Lions bosses build a flexible squad
Zmarzlik has become a big favourite at the Gislaved club in recent years and joins the likes of Speedway GP newcomer Dominik Kubera
2020 World Under-21 champion Jaimon Lidsey
former Speedway GP star Oliver Berntzon and FIM SGP2 rider Casper Henriksson in a star-studded squad
Lions chiefs Anders Fröjd and Mikael Holmstrand insists there was never a question of bringing Zmarzlik back
Bartosz and his team have agreed since the end of the season that we want to continue working together.
“But it's always good to let a little time pass and decide on how many matches the biggest stars think they have time to race in other leagues and what team structure and budget we see ahead of us in the coming years
We have agreed on a plan for some time and after a few weeks of vacation
Bartosz's signature has now also landed on a contract
With four individual World Championship golds already at the age of 28
he is already one of the world's best riders of all time.”
building a deep squad to ensure they are covered in the event Zmarzlik or Kubera’s international commitments force them to sit out any Swedish matches
Fröjd and Holmstrand added: “Next year's squad has two main line-up possibilities
where we have fewer points to spend on the reserve side and a wider one where we are very even right through the team.
“Since both Zmarzlik and Kubera will race in the GP next year and both are also part of the Polish national team with all the commitments that means
we need to have a broad alternative when one or both of them is not available and we are very happy to have created these conditions for ourselves with a squad that has great potential to raise its average.”
FIM SGP2 bronze medallist Bartlomiej Kowalski has extended his contract with Indianerna
Finnish international Timo Lahti is the latest star to join champions Dackarna and triple British champion Chris Harris is back in Sweden after joining Bauhaus Elitserien newcomers Vargarna
Lejonen bosses dubbed double FIM SGP2 champion Mateusz Cierniak “one of the best newcomers in the Bauhaus league this year
if not the very best” as he extended his stay in Gislaved into 2024
Cierniak made his Swedish league debut in 2023 and made a big impression in the season he won his second straight FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship in the FIM SGP2 series
He joins forces with Speedway GP newcomer Dominik Kubera
Jaimon Lidsey and former FIM SGP2 rival Casper Henriksson in Lejonen colours
team leaders Anders Fröjd and Mikael Holmstrand confirmed he was a popular addition to the club in 2023
They wrote: “As the reigning world junior champion
he came to Lejonen to race his first season in the Swedish league
Despite his inexperience on the Swedish tracks
he quickly became a leading rider in the team and chased the life out of superstar after superstar with offensive and fearless riding.
“The crowd in Gislaved quickly took him to their hearts and had he not been injured at the end of the season – he both raced in great pain and had to miss a match – he would probably have raised his average even more
it was obvious to build on the relationship with Mateusz and just like several riders that we previously presented
he is in an average category that allows us to build a very even team with several variants where riders can replace each other in case of injuries or obstacles.
“Despite the large average increase last year
we still see great development potential in Mateusz who
who masters all types of tracks and surfaces
and it is only a matter of time before he establishes himself at the very highest level in the world
Our tradition of connecting with young riders with great development potential has been very successful over the years and we look forward to continuing the journey together with Mateusz and his team.”
Przemyslaw Pawlicki has joined his younger brother Piotr in Piraterna’s squad for 2024
They team up with Czech international Vaclav Milik
And Vastervik has completed its squad with Swedish trio Theo Bergqvist
They link up with Speedway GP riders Robert Lambert and Tai Woffinden
Czech racer Jan Kvech says he approaches his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut season with “peace of mind” as he faces the biggest campaign of his career so far in 2024
Kvech finished fifth at the FIM SGP Challenge in Gislaved last August to book his place among the sport’s elite for the very first time
The Zielona Gora star raced to SGP2 FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship silver in 2022 and is now getting ready to take on the likes of world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik
Fredrik Lindgren and Martin Vaculik on a regular basis
With his full-time debut on the Speedway GP stage just under two months away
Kvech admits he has changed a few things as he prepares to chase World Championship points over 11 tough rounds
And he is happy with his build-up to the SGP season
He told Ekstraliga.pl: “A lot of things have changed in my preparation and technique
There are also a few changes in my team.
I know that I will approach each meeting with full commitment
and I will want to achieve the best results possible.”
Kvech’s 2023 season was brought to a premature end after he suffered multiple fractures to his left wrist in a training crash in his homeland
he is stepping up his pre-season preparations
He added: “I can say that the winter passed very quickly
and I recovered from the injury I had at the end of last season
I returned to training and now I feel very good

Russia into the structure of the Cordiant holding company

While Zmarzlik largely occupied the spotlight in Gislaved
more will be expected of Miskowiak as he joins the Wolves
lining up alongside the likes of former Speedway GP star Chris Harris
Polish young gun Kacper Pludra has agreed terms with Rospiggarna
as he departs Gislaved’s Allsvenskan League team for pastures new and steps up into Sweden’s top flight in 2024
Speaking to the Hallstavik club’s official website
the Grudziadz star said: “I am looking forward to the coming season.
“It feels exciting to take a place in the Swedish top league and I am happy that it is happening in Rospiggarna
I need to compete against the best riders in the world and not just in the Ekstraliga
Riding in Sweden gives me the opportunities to do that.”

Slovak star Martin Vaculik took a giant stride closer towards sealing a 2024 FIM Speedway Grand Prix spot by booking his place at the FIM GP Challenge
Vaculik topped the podium on 14 points at the qualifying round in his home city Zarnovica on Saturday to secure his passage to the FIM GP Challenge at Swedish track Gislaved on August 19
The top three riders in the Challenge will be the first riders to qualify for the 2024 Speedway GP series
meaning Vaculik is just five good rides away from securing a return ticket for next season’s World Championship
He’s joined in Gislaved by former Polish champion Szymon Wozniak
A run-off took place to decide the final two qualifiers after Speedway GP rider Robert Lambert tied on 12 points with Denmark’s Frederik Jakobsen and American racer Luke Becker
both Becker and Jakobsen overhauled Lambert in the run-off to knock the world No.5 out of the qualifiers
But another top-six finish in this season’s Speedway GP series will also guarantee Lambert’s place in the 2024 SGP line-up
Triple Australian champion Max Fricke was also a surprise casualty in Zarnovica
while former World Under-21 champion Bartosz Smektala fell short on nine
Prague FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic wild card Vaclav Milik missed the cut on five
former world No.6 Piotr Pawlicki edged closer to securing a Speedway GP return by winning his qualifier at Italian track Lonigo
The Wroclaw man won the meeting on 13 points on what turned out to be a special day for Italian speedway
Both home heroes Nicolas Covatti and Paco Castagna blazed through to the FIM GP Challenge on 12 points apiece
The trio took part in a run-off for second place on the day
with Covatti taking victory ahead of Kvech and Castagna
Sweden’s Oliver Berntzon just missed out on 11 points
falling just short of taking his place at the FIM GP Challenge on his home track in Gislaved.
But if no Swedish riders make it through the qualifiers at German track Abensberg or Hungarian circuit Debrecen on Monday
Berntzon could yet receive a wild card for the Challenge as the host nation is guaranteed a representative in the event
Former world No.3 Niels-Kristian Iversen also missed the cut in Lonigo on 10 points
while Finnish international Timo Lahti and former World Under-21 champion Jaimon Lidsey exited on nine and Great Britain star Tom Brennan fell short on eight
Three more Speedway GP riders bid for FIM GP Challenge places at the remaining qualifiers
with Jason Doyle and Kim Nilsson contesting the Abensberg round and Jack Holder heading to Debrecen

About 30 of JTH master's engineering students participated in "Industriresan"
about 30 of JTH master's engineering students visited four industries in Värnamo and Gislaved's municipalities through an initiative called "Industriresan"
which was organised by JTH and Campus Värnamo
Ida Lund and Frida Larsen says that "Industriresan" was two fun and rewarding days
“It is good that students get to come out and see modern industries in real life
we hope that Industriresan will make them interested in working in the manufacturing industry
here or somewhere else,” says Erik Forsberg
which was one of the companies in this year’s Industriresa
who are studying the second year of the master’s programme Industrial Product Realisation at JTH
TrioWorld in Smålandsstenar and Hylténs Industrimuseum in Gnosjö
The Students also performed technology-related challenges with high school students at Gummifabriken in Värnamo
which gets the opportunity to meet and connect with future graduate engineers
Ida Lund and Frida Larsen were two of the students who participated in Industriresan and think it was two fun and rewarding days
“It was interesting to see the entire production chain at the companies and how digitized they are
We were made to feel welcome and they made a good impression on us
Both students found it motivating to visit the companies since they may very well work in the manufacturing industry in the future
“You get a clearer picture of the companies when you get to visit them and see their production. It is also a good way for us to see which companies we are interested in for future internships and jobs,” says Ida Lund
The companies' great focus on sustainability made an impression on Frida and Ida
"It feels good to us that they have an extensive idea of sustainability
That makes them attractive as employers,” says Frida Larsen
The students were allowed to follow the production at the companies

a lofty status they shared with fourth-placed finisher
It seems Klipp and Möller searched in vain for weaknesses amongst the top four; the test report only lists their strengths
including “stable handling qualities in all weather conditions
best efficiency” (Dunlop); “good winter characteristics
high steering precision and dynamic handling on snowy and wet surfaces
low rolling resistance” (Continental); good value for money
best driving characteristics on packed snow
short stopping distance and low rolling noise (Kleber); balance
low rolling noise and rolling resistance (Fulda)
Weaknesses were identified in the tyres finishing behind the top four: The Hankook I*Cept RS² displayed slightly elevated rolling resistance and undistinguished curved aquaplaning results
the Goodyear UltraGrip 9 an extended dry braking distance
and the Debica Frigo HP2 and Falken Eurowinter HS01 issues with lateral control
They delivered positive results for handling
short braking distances (Debica) as well as snow and dry handling
The next ten tyres were rated ‘satisfactory’
“Modest wet qualities” held the Nokian WR D4 back from a better result
while the Uniroyal MS Plus 7 was marked down for extended braking distances as well as its handling characteristics on dry road surfaces
Ranked eight places beneath its mid-brand stablemate from Kleber
the Michelin Alpin 5 was handicapped by limited performance on snow and highish rolling resistance
The Semperit Master Grip 2 displayed a lengthy braking distance and lukewarm handling in the dry
and the latter also plagued the Cinturato Winter
The Pirelli tyre was also deemed to have “limited mileage performance.” The Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 Evo was found wanting in lateral control and took too long to stop in the snow
while the Yokohama BluEarth Winter (V905) displayed “only average grip levels” on snow-covered roads
limited mileage” were criticisms levelled against the Barum Polaris 3
Testers Klipp and Möller found the Vredestein Snowtrac 5 to have restricted wet grip levels and only average mileage and efficiency
Rounding out the crop of tyres with a ‘satisfactory’ rating was the Matador MP92 Sibir Snow
which lost points for delayed steering response
lengthy braking distances in the dry and limited mileage
the second round of testing resulted in a ‘conditionally recommended’ rating
The first of these was the Firestone Winterhawk 3
whose grip was notably limited and its steering response in the wet delayed
displayed lengthy wet and dry braking distances and only moderate comfort levels
that the both Firestone and Gislaved tyres performed well enough to progress to the second round of testing
This wasn’t the case for 31 of the 51 tyres evaluated by Auto Bild
“All budget tyres and no-names were already eliminated through our safety check in the preliminary round,” noted Henning Klipp and Dierk Möller in their concluding comments
the low-priced candidates from the Kleber and Fulda second brands presented themselves as affordable and without blemish.”
Shortlisting has taken place for the Auto Bild 2019 summer tyre test
with a starting field of 53 candidates reduced to 20 finalists in the initial round
The size 225/45 R17 91/94 W/Y tyres selected for further testing mainly come from the premium and mid-range segments
while the budget segment was well-represented in the group of 33 tyres eliminated from proceedings
the group also included two tyre brands belonging to leading manufacturers – both delivered ‘bottom ten’ results
Finalists were selected using the same process seen in prior Auto Bild tests
testers from the German motoring magazine observed how long each tyre took to stop on wet (from 80 km/h) and dry (from 100 km/h) road surfaces
The aggregate results were then compared and the 20 best performers earmarked for further
These are the finalists progressing to the next round:
Toyo Proxes Sport and the Maxxis Premitra 5
Milestone Green Sport and Star Performer UHP 1
Some of the budget candidates took five metres longer to stop from 100 km/h in dry conditions than the best in test
and in the wet the Milestone and Star Performer tyres needed an additional ten metres when coming to a standstill from 80 km/h
The testers also highlighted a particularly disturbing result: A couple of manufacturers
companies who know how to make a grippy tyre
“The braking performance of the Viking and Laufenn summer tyres was surprisingly poor
their total braking distances pushed them down to 44th (Laufenn) and 46th (Viking) place
We’d expected more from brands that belong to major manufacturers such as Continental (Viking) and Hankook (Laufenn),” commented Auto Bild
