The town of Götene
located about 200 miles southwest of Stockholm
went viral last month after announcing it would sell plots of land at prices starting at less than 10 cents per square meter
The promotion aims to lure new residents to the rural region amid a national housing crisis, mounting interest rates, and declining birth rates, Götene Mayor Johan Månsson told CNN
Götene offers residents a quiet slice of rural Sweden
with about 5,000 full-time residents and 13,000 people living in the surrounding municipality
The lakeside locale sits beside the largest lake in the EU and is a stone's throw away from a nearby mountain town
The local government in Götene is selling 30 plots of land that have been on the market for "many
and the only requirement as of last week was that the lucky buyers start building a home on the site within two years of purchase
The current rules permit people to build a full-time residence or a dream vacation home on the land
Månsson told CNN that only about 30 interested buyers initially reached out
and "thousands and thousands" of prospective new buyers started ringing Götene city hall
"We have two people in our phone exchange in city hall
and they have been very sweaty over the past few days," Månsson told the outlet
The land program has quickly become a sensation, with calls coming in from around the world
Local authorities ultimately decided to pause the program until early August in order to develop a plan to handle the incoming requests
Four buyers managed to snatch up four of the ultracheap plots before chaos broke out
the program will most likely transition to a bidding process for the remaining land when applications reopen next month
More and more Americans are turning to Europe in hopes of finding affordable homes

When The Local spoke to Götene's mayor Johan Månsson on June 24th
the municipality was happy with the results of its campaign
selling three plots since April after receiving 20 expressions of interest
it had gone viral and the municipality had been inundated with thousands of requests
to the extent that they've had to pause sales until August 7th to catch up
anyone is allowed to buy a plot – there are no restrictions as far as nationality or residency is concerned
there are a few things you should bear in mind if you are looking to snap up one of the plots
Buying a plot won’t grant you the right to live in Sweden
You can’t get residency in Sweden just by buying land here
which means that if you want to relocate to Sweden from abroad for the long term
you’ll either need a residence permit if you’re a non-EU citizen
or you’ll need EU right of residence if you’re from the EU
The only group of people who can move to Sweden without needing to meet any requirements are Nordic citizens – that’s citizens of Iceland
You need a Swedish bank account to pay for the plot
You’ll also need a Swedish bank account to pay for the plot
so you’ll need to sort that out before you buy
which can offer Swedish bank details to people based outside of Sweden
but you may need to meet other requirements with them
You need to build a permanent residence on it
you should be aware that you’re committing to building a permanent home on it within two years from the purchase date
but you’ll need to be able to afford to build a house there
as well as cover any additional fees for connecting electricity
Here’s a breakdown of the estimated fees provided by the municipality
and this doesn’t afford the cost of actually building the house:
If you’re planning on taking out a mortgage to finance the home build
you should contact Swedish banks in advance in order to prove that you have the means to build a house
you should be aware that some banks require you to have permanent residence or even citizenship in Sweden in order to qualify for a mortgage
so make sure to carry out these checks before you commit to buying land
You have two years to build a home on the plot
not only will the plot of land return to the municipality
but you’ll have to pay a 100,000 kronor fine
You won’t be reimbursed for any work you’ve done on the plot
You can buy a prefabricated home from a number of different suppliers – check sites like hustillverkare.nu, byggahus.se or hus.se for more information on this (in Swedish) – but be aware that even if you do this it can take longer than you expect for your home to be ready
If you don’t want to do any work on the house yourself, then the absolute cheapest option available, according to hustillverkare.nu
costs just under 1.4 million kronor (around 132,750 dollars)
which will get you a one-bedroom home with an open-plan living room and kitchen
you can pay as low as 300,000 kronor (28,500 dollars) for a simple shell of a home
There are rules about what you can and can’t do yourself – electrics and plumbing will need to be carried out by a professional
and the cost of labour is expensive in Sweden – so bear that in mind when calculating the cost

High interest in plots could push up prices
International interest in the plots has been “crazy” since The Local was first to report the story in English
The municipality has had so many applications to buy plots that it has paused sales until August 7th in order to catch up with demand
It’s also worth noting that the one krona per square metre price is a starting price
and if there are multiple people interested in a plot

You can contact the municipality if you have any questions regarding the campaign or to express interest in a plot here: miljo-ochbygglovnamnden@gotene.se
Be aware that it’s summer in Sweden and many Swedes will be on holiday until the end of July at least
so you may not get a response until August
Götene isn't the first municipality to offer plots of land at such a discount
Hylte municipality, around three hours to the south, launched a similar campaign earlier this year, offering 54 plots of land for just one kronor per square metre
Hylte, like Götene, is a small municipality in need of new residents. Ronny Löfquist, chairman of Hylte municipality, described their campaign to public broadcaster SVT as a "great success"

After an effort to revitalize its community and entice new residents, a Swedish town has gone viral — it’s selling plots of land for less than 10 cents per square meter
The campaign has garnered so much attention that it has temporarily halted sales due to the overwhelming response
Gotene, a quaint town in western Sweden, has a population of about 5,000 residents and is beside the largest lake in the EU
The town’s initiative to sell 30 abandoned plots of land for one Swedish krona ($0.095) per square meter was initially seen as a whimsical marketing stunt by Mayor Johan Mansson
Gotene’s land sale aimed to attract new residents and stimulate local growth
Buyers must construct a house on the land within two years
This requirement ensures that the land contributes to the town’s development rather than remaining idle
the costs do not end with the purchase price
Potential buyers must also cover additional expenses
The costs include a building permit (30,000 kronor)
and internet connection fees (30,000 kronor)
What began as a modest campaign quickly spiraled into a global phenomenon after a local television report and viral TikTok video brought Gotene’s offer to the world’s attention
The town hall received inquiries from around the globe
including Europe and Asia — particularly India and Pakistan — the United States
Because of the sudden increase in interest, the government of Gotene had to temporarily halt sales to properly handle the situation. “It went viral and we’ve had thousands and thousands of requests to our telephone exchange,” Mayor Johan Månsson told CNN
The unprecedented interest has sparked various reactions within Gotene
Some locals are excited about the prospect of new neighbors and the potential economic boost
while others are concerned about the town’s capacity to accommodate the sudden influx of new residents
The land sales will resume on August 7 with an auction format
allowing the city to manage the high demand more effectively
This pause also gives the local government time to refine its strategy and ensure that the growth is sustainable and beneficial for the community

Nordic energy company Gasum is starting the construction work on its latest biogas plant in Götene
as the first in a line of strategic investments into increasing biogas availability
the new plant will be producing 120 gigawatt hours (GWh) worth of liquefied biogas (LBG) per year from early 2025 onwards
The company said that the Götene plant will utilise mainly manure as feedstock from the agriculture sector in the surrounding area
processing approximately 400,000 tons of feedstock yearly
the plant will produce 350,000 tons of environmentally friendly fertilizers
which are returned to the farmers providing the feedstock
Gasum is investing nearly €54 million in the plant
of which €15 million has been provided as a grant from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet investment program
“We are extremely happy to be proceeding with this project in Götene
we have seen interest in biogas intensify in the Nordic countries as well as across the whole of Europe
The Götene biogas plant will be the first step in Gasum’s ambitious plan for increasing the availability of renewable energy to our customers whether they are in the traffic
Head of Project Development & Execution at Gasum
The Götene plant is the first one in a series of five large-scale biogas plants that Gasum plans to construct in Sweden during the next few years
The company is also working on a biogas plant near Trondheim in Norway as part of its renewed strategy to invest strongly in increasing Nordic biogas availability in the coming years
Gasum’s strategic goal is that by 2027 a significant portion of its profits will come from green energy sources
This means increasing the role of biogas and trade in renewable electricity

Arla Foods is in talks to acquire a factory Switzerland’s Hero Group plans to close in Sweden
parts of the equipment and the land itself
Arla has a cheese and spreadable butter factory in Götene
In August, Hero sold its Semper gluten-free business in the Nordics to Dr
That deal involved Hero’s gluten-free crisp bread factory in the Swedish town of Korsnäs but not the site in Götene
and gluten-free mixes for the group’s different companies
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
The company’s decision to cease production at the site “follows changing market conditions”
It pointed to a fall in consumption of baby milk
reduced demand from China and a lower birth rate that has led to a decreasing demand for baby and toddler milk
“The group has also shifted its strategic focus away from this category
prioritising a smaller number of core categories,” it added
the general manager of Hero’s northern European business
said the company has launched talks with unions because “changing market forces and strategic focus have resulted in far lower than expected production at [the] Götene plant
meaning that we are not able to operate efficiently and competitively”
Arla is interested in “buying the equipment needed to produce milk powder for the industrial markets”
the company already has two powdered milk facilities in Sweden and exports the product to markets including the Middle East and China
The spokesperson told Just Food Arla has surplus milk and the “opportunity” to buy the assets has “arisen”
“Hero Group was thinking of closing the plants down and we already share lots of facilities,” the spokesperson added
Arla would have three milk powder sites and increased [production] capacity would “smooth [its] operations within the powder production sites”
as well in other European countries we have a surplus of milk
we would be able to increase our capacity to produce powder,” he said
The employees at Arla and Semper were informed of the plans yesterday (23 January) and negotiations with union officials have begun

Located in a beautiful part of Sweden on the southern shore of Lake Vänern
Götene municipality has a lot going for it
But it is struggling with an ageing population and low birth figures
which allows buyers to pay just one krona per square metre of land
is an attempt to give it a nudge in the right direction
and the price of land isn’t the be all and end all
but it’s an important part of that,” Månsson said
has the courage to build a house here despite the current economic situation
Interest rates are starting to drop in Sweden
families are still being cautious when it comes to the property market
“Extraordinary times call for extraordinary solutions
The campaign has been in place for roughly one month
“I can’t describe it as anything other than a success,” Månsson said
adding that estate agents responsible for selling the plots of land have seen a lot of interest
despite the fact that some of the plots in question had already been on the market for a long time - up to 40 years in some cases
“Some of these plots have been on sale for many years
as they’ve more or less been forgotten about.”
He added that they have had almost 20 expressions of interest
selling three plots in the last month or so
then we’ve recouped the cost of this campaign many times over
Every new taxpayer is an important economic asset for a small municipality like Götene.”
Far from all the municipality’s plots are for sale
rather those included in this campaign are what Månsson refers to as strötomter
single plots which are scattered all over the municipality and are primarily located in built-up areas
“They’re not whole housing estates or plots on new housing estates,” he said
“Most of them are in smaller areas where there hasn’t been a great deal built in recent decades.”
You can take a look at available plots in Götene municipality here, with many selling at a 98 or 99 percent discount

Götene municipality is a popular area for tourists from Sweden and elsewhere
and there are no barriers for foreigners interested in moving to the area
“Absolutely anyone is welcome to buy one of the plots,” Månsson said
“There are no rules or requirements as to who is allowed to buy one
It would be absolutely fantastic if we could get people from abroad interested in buying plots here
The only requirement for interested buyers is that they must begin construction on their plot within two years of the purchase date
otherwise it will be given back to the municipality
The campaign will be running throughout 2024 and 2025
“After that it probably won’t be continued
as the economy will most likely go back to normal

Technology group Wärtsilä will deliver the know-how and equipment for a significant Swedish bioLNG project. The Wärtsilä solution will upgrade the biogas from agricultural waste and then liquefy it into high quality bioLNG
The installation has been ordered by Gasum AB and it will be located at the company’s facility near Götene
The order was booked by Wärtsilä in May 2023
the Wärtsilä offering will be capable of producing 25 tons of bioLNG per day
BioLNG is formed by purifying biogas by removing hydrogen sulphide (H2S)
carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour before it’s liquefied at -160 °C
It has the same calorific value and other properties making it usable as an environmentally sustainable fuel fully compatible with fossil LNG
“Götene biogas plant project is very important to us
It is the first of our five large biogas plant projects in Sweden in the coming years
After thorough and extensive procurement phase we were happy to conclude the deal with Wärtsilä
We have high expectations on the equipment and service
and are confident that Wärtsilä will meet those,” stated Eero Lallukka
“Wärtsilä’s corporate strategy is focused on decarbonising our customers’ operations
Our biogas upgrading and liquefaction capabilities in support of this bioLNG facility are fully in line with this commitment
We look forward to supporting Gasum as they work to expand their operations in promoting green fuel alternatives,” commented Rolf Håkansson
The full Wärtsilä scope of supply includes the delivery
installation and commissioning of the upgrading and liquefaction equipment
and the facility is expected to be fully operational at the beginning of 2025

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) began supporting asylum seekers in Götene municipality in Sweden with mental health and psycho-social activities
The project comes following an assessment of asylum seekers’ needs in Sweden and uses an innovative and culturally sensitive model of care that prioritises early intervention
Working alongside an existing network of volunteers
the project seeks to highlight the need for mental health services for asylum seekers in the country and prove MSF’s model of mental health care in Europe
“Many asylum seekers in Sweden are suffering from mental health problems simply because they’ve suffered too much
In many cases they’ve lived in constant fear for months or years before making it to safety
they’ve risked their lives at sea and they’ve put up with an undignified welcome here in Europe,” said Jenny Gustafsson
“Their symptoms are completely normal reactions to the abnormal situation they find themselves in but there are clear gaps in mental health services for them in Sweden
we have the expertise and resources required to provide the care they need
so we’ve decided to jump in alongside Swedish civil society groups
the local municipality and health care authorities to contribute.”
MSF has increasingly focused on mental health care and in 2015 offered psychosocial support to more than 220,000 patients all over the world
including in many of the countries those seeking asylum in Sweden originally fled or passed through on their journey north through Europe
Mental health needs among asylum seekers are higher than in the general population
mainly due to the trauma and uncertainty they’ve experienced
women and children fleeing to Sweden last year
Sweden is one of the top destinations for asylum seekers in Europe and has been struggling to meet the mental health needs of new arrivals
One of the main aims of MSF’s project in Götene is to demonstrate that there is a way to provide mental health care to asylum seekers
including vulnerable groups like unaccompanied minors
that doesn’t over burden the local health system or lead to long waiting times for specialised care
The MSF model of care in Sweden focuses on early intervention
including group counselling and individual sessions and has already proven successful in other countries
made up of counsellors and cultural mediators (who speak the languages and understand the culture of the countries the asylum seekers have fled)
will complement their psycho-social activities by building a network of volunteers to help asylum seekers access other services and to feel more at home in the local community
The team will be led by a psychologist who will be in charge of assessing people in need of more specialised care and referring them to local mental health services
“MSF works with refugees and other migrants all over the world and we see the real difference that early intervention and psychological first aid can make in the lives of people going through immense challenges,” Gustafsson explains
“Our staff will give the asylum seekers the tools they need to deal with their experiences and help them get on with their lives here in Sweden.”
The project in Götene will run until next April in close collaboration with local health authorities
MSF is currently working with asylum seekers
Serbia and France and has teams on board three rescue boats in the Mediterranean Sea
MSF teams will continue to assess mental and physical health needs for new arrivals elsewhere in Europe and intervene as appropriate

that was just the beginning of a story Månsson described as “completely surrealistic”
then not much happened after that,” Månsson told The Local when we spoke to him again a week later
“We managed to sell two more just before all of this blew up.”
“All of this started last Monday, when SVT Väst [the Swedish public broadcaster's western Sweden station] picked up the story,” Månsson said. “Then TT [the main Swedish newswire] picked it up, and Aftonbladet did a TikTok thing about it
Employees at Götene municipality could already see an “explosion” in the number of interested people after that
although up until this point it had only gone viral within Sweden
“After that came your article in The Local
which I think made this explode on a global level,” Månsson said
we could see it spreading in Europe and then globally
set off a viral media snowball which rolled across the world
“You could see it rolling over Europe, to Asia – mainly India and Pakistan, with it all culminating later in the week when CNN got in touch with me
I just spoke to The Washington Post yesterday
“I think I can safely say we’ve reached all the corners of the earth by now.”
All the media attention has put Götene municipality into “crisis mode”
while describing the situation as “like winning the lottery”
There are only one or two people manning the phone lines
which have been ringing constantly for the past week
we’ve had to pause the campaign until August 7th so we can catch up with all the expressions of interest.”
'I'm convinced there will be more than enough potential buyers'
It’s not entirely clear how many of the thousands of interested potential buyers will culminate in a sale
as buying property doesn’t give you the right to live in Sweden
so many buyers will need to find another way to stay in the country
“It’s hard to see exactly what the situation will look like [after August 7th]
very strange if we don’t break a new record in the number of plots sold
I’m convinced there will be more than enough potential buyers left over.”
The municipality itself is still open to selling the plots to anyone
whether they currently live in Sweden or not
but Månsson underlined the fact that buyers should make sure that their immigration documents are in order before committing to a plot
“We can check that the house is being built – that’s our rule
you need to have the right to stay in Sweden
And we’ve had to explain that to a few people
The municipality has also introduced a new rule
that anyone interested in buying a property needs to have a Swedish bank account
although this isn’t in order to limit the plots to people already living in Sweden
“Anyone from abroad who wants to come here
contribute and enrich our community is more than welcome.”
'Every family is worth their weight in gold to us'
how much would it mean to Götene municipality if all 30 plots of land are sold to families who build homes and settle in the region
“Every family is worth their weight in gold to us
and it would also make a huge difference to our tax income as such a small municipality,” Månsson said
while adding that schools in particular would benefit from more children in the area
every family is worth its weight in gold.”
The equivalent of 'millions of kronor worth of marketing'
The media interest has also resulted in “millions of kronor worth of marketing” for Götene
with CNN describing the lakeside region as “idyllic” and “rural Sweden at its finest”
“I’m not convinced that those of us working in the region or the people living here have really taken in what’s happening and what has happened,” he said
“I think it will take a while before we do
The municipality isn’t sure yet what the next steps for the campaign will be once sales reopen in August
although they’re in discussion about whether more plots could be included
“We’ll have to see what happens,” Månsson said
Dreaming of living a quiet life in Europe
Sweden is selling plots of land one krona (P5.59) per square meter (sqm) as part of their effort to boost the population numbers of the idyllic locale.
Johan Månsson, the mayor of Götene told CNN that the said initiative is the local authorities’ response to economic decline and slow population growth over the years.
”The housing market is currently very slow in our region and Sweden in general because of high interest rates and a bit of a recession
so we wanted to give an injection into the market,” he told the outlet.
”We’re also seeing low birth rates and an aging population so we have to do something
the municipality has 5,000 residents in the main town and 13,000 in the wider area
Månsson said they put 30 plots for sale in May
which have been “on the market for many many years” without selling
Four have already bought plots at the one krona (P5.59) price
with the sizes ranging from 700-1,200 square meters.
Månsson added that the cost of building a house usually costs around 3 to 4 million krona (P16 million to P21 million)
While the plots of land cost around 500,000 krona (P2 million).
buying a plot is open to everyone—they don’t have to be residents of Sweden or commit to residing there permanently
The only specific requirement is that the building of the house must start within two years of purchase
The visa rules will also be decided by the Swedish government.
local authorities received thousands of requests from across the world
which made them decide to pause the selling until early August.
”We have two people in our phone exchange in city hall and they have been very sweaty over the past few days
We’re basically in crisis mode,” the mayor said.
the authorities will implement a bidding process for the land instead of following the selling price of one krona per sqm
The lower price will be given only if nobody wants the land
the mayor also said that they are looking at doing a cheap house sale similar to “one euro” houses in Italy.
and we’ll have to sit down and see if we can do something to make something more of it other than just these 30 plots
We need something to offer the callers,” he said.
