One of Sweden’s DNOs Ellevio Group is investing in four new battery storage projects totalling 70MW
the latest in a series of large-scale projects
two battery energy storage units of 15MW each will be deployed in Kungsbacka and Lindome with construction expected to finish in spring this year
A further 40MW of battery storage will be deployed at a yet-to-be-determined site in central Sweden
The storage systems will help to balance and optimise the grid as more renewables come online
or electricity network company as it describes itself
is launching the projects through its energy service division Ellevio Energy Solutions
The new projects add to an existing 10MW system in Grums that Ellevio ordered from Netherlands-based system integrator Alfen in May last year
and Ellevio indicated the firm would be the supplier for the new projects too
Electricity demand in Sweden is set to double over the next 20 years to around 300TWh by 2025
and the country’s substantial pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) capacity is starting to be saturated by demand for flexibility services
This has meant a substantial pick-up in battery storage projects being launched in the past 12 months
“Battery storage is an exciting technology with many different benefits for the electricity system
A doubling of electricity use within just over 20 years means that we have to develop an entire ecosystem with digital solutions
support services and more,” said Kristofer Fröjd
head of strategy and business development within the Ellevio Group
The firm is one of Sweden’s three main DNOs along with division of state-owned power company Vattenfall and Germany-based international utility E.ON. Vattenfall made an earlier move in the battery storage space in 2020 and operates the largest operational battery unit today by capacity at 5MW/20MWh, also built by Alfen
using batteries from automotive OEM BMW’s i3 EV model
E.ON has not announced any battery storage projects in Sweden that Energy-Storage.news is aware of
will be built adjacent to a substation run by E.ON
Energy-Storage.news’ publisher Solar Media will host the eighth annual Energy Storage Summit EU in London, 22-23 February 2023. This year it is moving to a larger venue, bringing together Europe’s leading investors, policymakers, developers, utilities, energy buyers and service providers all in one place. Lynn Alexander discusses Harry’s Trees by Jon Cohen in her column
“Of all the glorious enchantments of this world—spring
It’s hard to think that a story of a two grieving adults and a grieving child could be heartwarming
But that is exactly the case with “Harry’s Trees” by Jon Cohen
love and a quirky librarian that combines for a great story
Harry Crane works for the US Forest Service office
He longs to be among the trees but just can’t see himself leaving the comforts of his four walls
Harry is overwhelmed with sadness and guilt
He spends one gloomy year wallowing in misery and sadness until he decides to leave the constricting confines of his office for the forest with the intent of fading to nothingness
Amanda and Oriana Jeffers are dealing with their own tragedy
Their strong-as-a-redwood husband/father dies suddenly
an act so off-base neither can understand it
Amanda wonders what she could have done to prevent the untimely death of her husband
While Amanda deals with the practical matters of running the household and trying to stay afloat
Oriana retreats to the woods and the wonderful treehouse her father built for her
Oriana buries her sadness in between the pages of books
searching for answers to questions no nine-year-old should have to consider
Olive is the pipe-smoking town librarian who is desperately trying to save the town’s library
but to change the reader?” Olive helps Oriana with her grief by keeping a fresh supply of books for Oriana to read (no easy task
as Oriana borrowed 112 books the year after her dad died)
Then Olive gives Oriana “The Grum’s Ledger,” a book that infuses Olive with hope and magic
“The Grum’s Ledger” is a story within a story that brings meaning and closure to many
Rounding out the story are a few other notable characters: Wolfe is Harry’s brutish brother and aptly named
Ronnie is the town drunk who is looking for redemption
If you are not interested in learning a lot about trees you will probably skip past that part
I loved the descriptions as I often miss the forests of my youth
see the blue sky through the green branches and hear the leaves crunch under my feet
All of these people and elements combine for a truly enjoyable story
I was happy reading “Harry’s Trees.” There was enough tension to make it interesting and enough hope to make it redemptive
except that every morning the sun will rise

There’s a lot of differences between Niclas Andersen’s hometown of Grums
But Andersen has noticed one similarity during his time in Wilkes-Barre that makes the area feel like home – a town with 5,200 people where the town is flanked by the Swedish countryside dotted with barns and mills
Andersen makes Grums sound like a pretty picturesque place
and he’s thankful for having grown up in a small town
Tell us about Grums: A really small town but a great place to grow up
A big hockey town as well and there were a lot of guys from there that played in the NHL
Is a small town in Sweden similar to a small town here
“I guess its the same as a small town here
There are farm areas and a big paper mill in Grums
What did you like about growing up in a small town in Sweden
You could walk everywhere and I lived close to the rink
Even if you don’t have practice you could walk over there and skate
We were close to the school and you could walk there
“Almost the same thing in Sweden as over here
The only thing a little bit different is the food we eat
It’s a big holiday in Sweden too and everyone looks forward to it.”
What kind of food do you eat for Christmas
When Janne Pesonen played here he said reindeer with lingonberries was a popular dish in Finland
They’re Finns so they’re strange
Perhaps in the northern part of Sweden they have reindeer
Any similarities between Wilkes-Barre and Grums
You have to take a car everywhere over here
One similarity is its close to the woods like we had in Grums
You can take a walk and go out in the forest and hike
If you don’t want to be around all the cars and downtown every day
20 minutes away you’re out in the woods and can relax.”

As Duke and Duchess of Värmland, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden often visit their duchy. On 25 October, the two began an official two-day visit to the region, which is centrally located in western Sweden and functions as a border region with neighbouring Norway.
The Prince and Princess were welcomed by regional political leaders in Karlstad before the journey went west towards the municipality and the town of Säffle. There, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia saw the new facilities for the production of electricity with wind turbines and were able to talk to local businesses.
It was Prince Carl Philip who had the honour of officially opening the wind facility, which is an important contribution to Swedish energy production. The wind turbines can supply 26,000 households with electricity each year.

the Prince gave a speech in which he said: “Our own access to energy from various sources is crucial for Sweden’s future prospects – and for our independence
today’s inauguration is an important step
Not just for Säffle municipality and Värmland
After a lunch at one of the town’s older houses
Their Royal Highnesses visited the library in the village of Grums
where they heard about a project where young people read to the elderly
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia concluded their hectic day in Värmland with a luxurious dinner at the official residence in Karlstad – the duchy’s largest city
Carl Philip and Sofia did not spend the first evening at the residence alone
as they were hosted by Governor Georg Andren and his wife
The official visit continued on 26 October with a visit to the Swedish Agency for Community Preparedness and the company Ballograf
Developers OX2 and Ingrid Capacity have started work on two battery storage projects totalling 60MW of power in Sweden
Renewable energy firm OX2 has started work on the Bredhälla BESS (battery energy storage system) project in the village of the same name
directly adjacent to a substation run by utility E.ON
Construction will start this month for commissioning in spring of 2024
The BESS will deliver ancillary services to Svenska Kraftnät
the state-owned transmission system operator (TSO)
while also providing load shifting to help balance the grid
It will be located near two of OX2’s ongoing wind power projects although it did not indicate these would be co-located or share any infrastructure
“The Bredhälla project provides increased security and flexibility for the electricity supply in southern Sweden,” said Michiel van Asseldonk
responsible for system services and energy storage
Intermittency is growing on the Swedish grid as more renewable energy sources come online
and the capacity of the country’s existing large pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) portfolio to balance this is being exhausted
Battery storage projects are being launched to make up the shortfall as the country seeks net zero by 2045
OX2’s announcement comes a few weeks after energy storage-focused firm Ingrid Capacity announced its latest BESS project
It didn’t provide many details but its last BESS project used lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells
society’s transition to renewable energy is enabled
Our systems act on call to even out the difference between production and consumption in the electricity grid at the second level
the battery can discharge to the grid to compensate
and in the same way charge from the grid when there is a temporary surplus,” said Nicklas Bäcker
Ingrid Capacity has around 500MW of energy storage projects under development in Sweden
It was formed in early 2022 and counts Swedish firms Engelbrekt Utveckling
Springbacka and Neptunia amongst its main shareholders
The Nordic country is also home to Northvolt, the lithium-ion gigafactory firm which has raised around US$8 billion to manufacture sustainable battery cells in Sweden and Germany and BESS equipment in Poland
Chicago’s North Coast Music Festival has become one of the summer’s elite festivals

The electricity network company Ellevio is diversifying its business to help industry and companies become fossil-free through electrification
The first investment is Sweden's largest Battery Energy Storge Solution (BESS) that enables more renewable energy in the electricity system and a better electricity network balance
Electricity is a prerequisite for societal development and achieving climate policy goals
Sweden will consume more than twice as much electricity in the next 25 years
from the current 140 TWh to approximately 310 TWh in 2045
The most important energy source for new electricity generation capacity during this time is wind power
But the amount of electricity supplied to the electricity grid depends on how much the wind blows
It creates a kind of yo-yo effect in the electricity flow that makes it more difficult to maintain the all-important frequency of 50 Hz in the electricity system
there is a risk of disturbance that can both be costly and have dangerous consequences
- If we are to transition to a more sustainable society
we must try to ensure that the electricity flow in the network is stable
This is why we are now building Sweden’s largest Battery Energy Storge Solution (BESS) of 10 MW
The main function of the system is to better balance the national grid networks
It is an important and exciting step in our journey to create energy solutions that help to transition our energy system
Head of Business Development and Strategy at Ellevio
The storage solution is the first step in a completely new business area for Ellevio – Sweden’s largest pure electricity network company
which has until now focused only on electricity networks
The idea of the diversified offering is to provide comprehensive support to companies that need to switch to electrified
With the help of a toolbox that now extends beyond electricity network services
Ellevio will offer complete solutions within industry networks
- We see great market demand when it comes to support in the electrification process
the transport sector and industry are switching from fossil fuels to electricity
but their core competence is in their own operations and industry and not necessarily in energy solutions
we can offer solutions that suit their individual needs

Kid Cudi and STS9 top the bill of the annual Labor Day weekend bash
Future Islands and more also hit Union Park
This morning, North Coast Music Festival—the annual Labor Day weekend concert event produced by local independent promoters React Presents
Kingtello and Metronome—announced the lineup to its fifth anniversary edition
The other big festival in Union Park (the one that doesn't rhyme with Itchpork) leans heavy on EDM, jam and rap. The 2014 lineup especially runs up a large electric bill—Bassnectar, Snoop Dogg, Kid Cudi and STS9 headline. Three-day passes are $149.99
and single-day tickets will go on sale at a later date
The rest of the bill looks a lot like a year's subscription to Mayhem at the Mid, with big name DJs Alesso, Zeds Dead, Dada Life, Wolfgang Gartner and more. We look forward to Swedish dance-pop darlings Little Dragon, foodie MC Action Bronson, posh micro-R&B singer Chet Faker
local roots-reggae pop act Wild Belle and the sort of lo-fi Pearl Jam
Heavy rains hit last year (as it did at most festivals), but that didn't stop the fans from slopping through the mud in crazy costumes
Though let's hope the weather is better this summer

Topping the UK charts in June 2013, this song by Naughty Boy is about running away from one’s problems. It features then up-and-coming artist Sam Smith
Although the rhythm and beat of the song are light and catchy
the underlying meaning is disturbing: that of emotional abuse
The video is even more disturbing, a story that may remind many readers of the Wizard of Oz but is, in fact, based on an old Bolivian legend about an abused deaf boy who learns he can chase away demons by screaming
taking with him mismatched friends and a beautiful dog
lively production is contrasted with a deep and complex and uneasy tale
The song became popular on the social video sharing platform TikTok in mid-June 2020

The Grum botnet has been one of the most prominent distributors of spam for years
ranking third in terms of world spam volume
network security corporation FireEye reported that all of Grum’s command and control servers (or CnC’s) had been taken down after a weeks-long effort
Thanks to the work of a number of individuals who contributed to the takedown
we may see a significant decrease in the volume of the world’s spam in the coming months
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term “botnet” and how it relates to spam-distribution
here’s a brief summary: A botnet is a network of computers infected with a type of malware that allows one central computer to control the actions of the entire botnet
Spammers then use the botnet to distribute spam
It’s basically computer mind-control
has been distributing pharmaceutical spam-emails since roughly 2008
it was estimated that 33.3% of the world’s spam volume could be attributed to Grum
That percentage has since fallen to 17.4% as of early July
making it the world’s third largest botnet (behind the Cutwail and Lethic botnets)
FireEye, a company that assisted with the takedowns of botnets such as Rustock and Mega-D, released a great deal of information they had gathered about Grum on the company’s blog last Monday, July 9. This post detailed multiple aspects of the botnet’s infrastructure
and the strong and weak points in its security strategy
there were two “master” command and control servers in Panama and Russia
as well as five “secondary” CnC’s located in the Netherlands
These nations are known for their lax attitude toward botnets
making it difficult to shut down the servers
There were also a number of key weaknesses in the botnet
“If I were to rank Grum’s takedown difficulty level from one to five where five is the most difficult
I would give Grum a two,” says Atif Mushtaq in the post
He goes on to deliver this hopeful statement:
“Can we dream of a junk-free mailbox
Guess what—it’s just a few takedowns away
taking down the top three spam botnets—Lethic
and Grum—is enough for a rapid and permanent decline in worldwide spam level
after seeing the big players being knocked down
On Monday the 16th, Mushtaq made another post titled
“Grum CnC’s–Just a Few More to Go.” Authorities in the Netherlands shut down two servers responsible for giving instructions to the “bot” computers comprising the botnet
There remained the two active “master” servers in Panama and Russia
Mushtaq vowed that FireEye was “monitoring Grum’s activities on a 24/7 basis.” The team at FireEye was working tirelessly to bring down the botnet giant
Yesterday, it was confirmed that Grum had been taken down for good in another post by Mushtaq
he received confirmation that Grum’s Panamanian Internet service provider had blocked the IP address of one of the two master servers
This piece of good news was followed by some bad news
Grum moved its remaining master server to Ukraine and set up an additional six servers to compensate for the botnet’s losses
FireEye shared all its information regarding Grum with Carel Van Straten and Thomas Morrison of Spamhaus
and an independent researcher who goes by “Nova7.” The team led an overnight operation to eradicate the remaining servers
all seven of Grum’s servers were confirmed dead
Mushtaq leaves us with this message to spammers:
We don’t need your cheap Viagra or fake Rolex
just one drop in the ocean of botnets and spammers; it’s a big drop
There are many more botnets waiting to take Grum’s place and keep filling our inboxes with all manner of things we don’t want
We need to send a message to spammers the world over that we don’t want their irritating advertisements
We need to send them a message by refusing to submit to their schemes and refusing to support them with our credit cards
