First Western Bank & Trust employees presented a check for $2,500 to Kalix, a local nonprofit that offers services to adults with disabilities. First Western gives back to the community by supporting local nonprofits, and the Charitable Giving Committee selected Kalix for the gift. Sabrina Herrmann, Marketing specialist officer for First Western, noted that employees chose to support local nonprofits that lack access to resources such as dedicated fund-raising offices or national fund drives. First Western and Kalix have a long-standing business relationship, collaborating on employment initiatives and financial services for people with disabilities. “Partnering with businesses and people in the communities we live in is so important to First Western Bank & Trust. Helping our local partners thrive is one of the most rewarding things to witness: If they succeed, our communities succeed,” said Herrmann. “We were pleasantly surprised by the donation, and appreciate First Western Bank & Trust’s support for Kalix services. In addition to financial support, the bank has purchased Kalix cookies, recycled with Kalix, employed people enrolled in Kalix training programs and offered outstanding personalized customer service to meet our unique banking needs. We are very grateful to their talented and conscientious staff,” said Borgi Beeler, president/CEO for Kalix. Kalix announced its recent accreditation in Person-Centered Excellence through 2022 received from the Council on Quality and Leadership. Kalix has a history in Minot as an incorporated agency since the 1960’s and currently serves adults with disabilities 18 years and older both residentially and vocationally in five North Dakota locations including Minot, Belcourt, Rolla, Langdon, and Grand Forks. Employment opportunities offered by Kalix include The Recycling Center in Minot, a commercial laundry facility in Minot, a Thrift Store in Belcourt, and various federal contracts. Most recently, Kalix expanded the Kalix Employee/Employer Partnership (K.E.E.P.) program, dedicated to supporting people to obtain competitive employment in integrated environments in Minot and surrounding communities. “Over the last thirty years, the industry and accreditation standards have changed exponentially. Our partnership with CQL has contributed to our success, and we remain committed to continuous improvement,” said Borgi Beeler, president/CEO of Kalix. Other unauthorized withdrawals were allegedly made by York at First Western Bank on Aug. 3 and Aug. 6 and at Kohl’s on Aug. 4. Kalix serves adults with developmental disabilities. Now on par with Champagne, Parmesan cheese or Gorgonzola - last year it was the first Swedish product to receive European Union 'Protected Geographical Status'.  That the deep reddish-gold caviar from Kalix, the so-called Kalixlöjrom, is a delicacy is nothing new. What is new, is that the delectable caviar now can boast to be in the same company as Champagne and Parmesan cheese: Kalixlöjrom is the first Swedish product to be protected under the so-called Protected Geographical Status, defined in European Union law to protect the names of regional foods. Foods such as Gorgonzola and Champagne can only be labeled as such if they come from the designated region. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that fishermen started fishing for löjrom in Kalix, and it wasn’t until a decade later that well-known restaurateur Tore Wretman made it famous by using it in the dish he created known as Toast Skagen. “Our main role is to help people live their daily life like everyone else,” said Borgi Beeler, CEO of Kalix, a nonprofit organization supporting the developmentally disabled. Headquartered in Minot, the organization was formerly known as Minot Vocational Adjustment Workshop. Kalix started in the 1960s as the Minot School for the Mentally Handicapped, offering daily services to adolescents. A decade later, the focus shifted toward adults, and a residential program was started. By the 1980s, the organization began manufacturing buttons and baking cookies. At that time, they became a licensed North Dakota provider, a federal contractor at Minot Air Force Base and gained accreditation by the Council on Quality and Leadership. This past decade, Kalix expanded its residential options in Minot and Belcourt. Kalix offers a community program in which staff members visit developmentally disabled people in their apartments and provide assistance with whatever each person needs. “We help with daily living skills, such as reminders to take a shower and get ready for the day. We also help with transportation to and from work and help them pay bills,” said Kari Merkel, Direct Support staff member for the Kalix Community Program. There are also those in the program who function independently and do things on their own. “In those situations, we are just in the background,” Merkel said. Kalix provides residential group homes, where up to 12 individuals live at a time. While living in the home, they are supported with everything they need to continue functioning in everyday life. Kalix resident Brian Marcil sings karaoke in the backyard. “We work on meal preparation and staying in contact with friends and family, but community activities are probably our biggest thing. We organize trips, whether it’s going to concerts, golfing or bowling. We do a lot of fun things,” said Lane Banister, residential coordinator for Kalix. Each person in the program has an individualized plan. The team leader decides what kind of support each individual person needs to live the life they want to live. “We just make it happen. Whatever goes on in the person’s life, we’re here to help them out,” Beeler said. Kalix helps these individuals find employment as well. The organization has several work sites at which individuals can be employed working for Kalix, and it provides assistance in finding jobs in the community. The type of job depends on each person’s interests and skills. “Our entire program is based around what a person is interested in. We’re not here to impose our will on them. We try to adapt to each individual,” Beeler said. Kalix has a kitchen where cookies of all different flavors are created. For 30 years now, Kalix has employed two or three of the residents at a time in the kitchen to help make the cookies to sell to the public. Many of the residents also volunteer in the community with organizations such as the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels. “They like to volunteer for causes that they feel are important to them,” Banister said. “Some of the people I support make blankets and dog toys. Others volunteer at their church, the Special Olympics and the soup kitchen. One of our residents packages bread for food pantries.” The program is also involved in shredding used classified documents in Minot. “We had a full service recycling center open from 1994-2020. But at this time we only do shredding. We have a number of locations around Minot where we pick up recycling bins once or twice a week, depending on the volume,” Beeler said. Kalix accepts materials for shredding that are dropped off at its Minot location every Wednesday afternoon. nice horses in this maiden hurdle Kaid D’authie was going well when he fell at Navan and we think he’s a very nice sort as we do Kalix Delabarriere beating Seo Linn who has won a Listed race at Cheltenham since We think he’s very good too and it’s a pity they have to take each other on but that’s the way it’s fallen Two very good horses and we’ll have to see which one is the best on the day Kaid D’authie also has the experience of a run over hurdles in Auteuil and it can be a huge advantage to have that French experience under your belt A small but good field for this beginners’ chase Quai De Bourbon would look to be the best of ours and Paul has gone for him He won three out of four over hurdles last season and is a horse who looks a chaser in the making I’m looking forward to getting him out there Chapeau De Soleil won a handicap hurdle at Punchestown in May but took a while to reach his best form last season and we’d have to bear that in mind going into Saturday Captain Cody would probably have to run a career best to beat some of these but he’s sure to make his presence felt over fences later on in the season It’s going to be a big ask for him on his first run of the campaign but he was second in the race last season and if he could get in the money again that would be a good result This is going to be a tip-top renewal of the Savills Chase with our top two in there Fact To File ran a cracker coming back to win the John Durkan at Punchestown however Galopin Des Champs wouldn’t be seen at his best over that trip This distance will suit him better and it will be up to Fact To File to prove himself the young pretender there’s a lot in his favour on Saturday and it’s to the other horse to prove he is the up-and-coming force I Am Maximus starts on the road to his Randox Grand National defence and Aintree will be his aim this year Grangeclare West and Minella Cocooner would have to improve considerably to trouble the main contenders Grangeclare West will be a lot better for his comeback run in the John Durkan though A nice type of horse that has come over from England This race will give us an indication of where we’re going with him for the rest of the season He’s State Man’s half-brother and ran into a very good horse of Gordon Elliott’s when second to Kalypso'chance at Punchestown on his first run for us Whether there’s something of a similar ability in here we don’t know but our fellow will have improved a lot for that run and I expect him to be there or thereabouts Danny has elected to go down to ride at Limerick which I think is quite significant This horse is a good sort and sure to be involved down there Trip and ground shouldn’t be a problem for him This fellow came to us with a great reputation from the point-to-point field and is one I’m really looking forward to seeing out on the track The trip of two miles five will suit as will the ground and he’s certainly a horse to keep an eye on and hopefully he will fulfil the potential he showed in the point-to-point sphere Impaire Et Passe was very impressive on his chasing debut at Fairyhouse and goes down to Limerick with a favourite’s chance Mirazur West is a good sort and conditions will suit him too while Sa Majeste was a course winner last season That was on much softer ground but he’s not out of this however I’d imagine Impaire Et Passe is the one of ours in this He was second in this race last season – and in the Thyestes Chases too He’s five pounds higher than in 2023 on Saturday so has a stiffer task but likes the track and has his chance We are but subject to change Down in trip and with a double helping of headgear KALIX DELABARRIERE should deliver now on his third start over hurdles Walk On The Beach and Withabitofluk won bumpers on better going than this who was handling soft going when running out here recently Son Of Anarchy has yet to live up to the promise of his point-to-point win A 4lb penalty may not be enough to prevent the experienced BACCHANALIAN from upholding Limerick form with Shoda who rates a serious threat Debut winner Good To Be Alive is hard to assess but is unlikely to be out of place in a race of this standard Tom Mullins holds a strong hand here with Kimi and San Aer though very testing ground is an unknown for the former Captains Nephew could go well off his lower hurdles mark and the consistent Balko D’ange has claims but preference is for the last time out C&D winner DUKE OF LEGGAGH His 7lb rise is negated by his jockey’s claim he relishes heavy ground and there could be more to come from him in this sphere if he jumps better The 11yo Waittillitellyou won as he liked at Navan but the veteran will need a big career best if he is to follow up Senior Chief is rated 13lb higher over fences and could go well and the hat-trick-seeking Bridie’s Beau a chance is taken on the bottom weight JERIKO DE BAUNE he’ll handle the ground and if he repeats his staying on sixth at Navan he should be thereabouts Very testing conditions have to be a concern for Black Heather so the most likely winners look to be SPINNINGAYARN and I’ll Sort That with narrow preference for the former He won his point-to-point on heavy ground and he showed a good attitude when winning at Navan last month Conor Stone-Walsh’s claim can help to compensate for the fact that THEONEWEDREAMOF (NAP) is 2lb wrong The mare can add to her Punchestown win in receipt of almost two stone from Shannon Royale dropped in class after making her handicap debut in the Thyestes It’s hard to know what to make of No Flies On Him but it would be risky to dismiss his chance in his first handicap This looks like an excellent opportunity for BLOOD DESTINY He will be suited by the return to 2m and the heavy ground and he has rock solid novice form in the book The trip looks too sharp for last year’s third Espanito Bello so the 2023 winner and 2024 runner-up Rebel Gold is taken to chase the selection home while odds in AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style took the reins of a horse for his Halloween costume to become Link a hero in the video game The Legend of Zelda A fire truck is the chosen vehicle for another boy who is 5 while a 3-year-old girl has a magic carpet ride as Jasmine Sonic the Hedgehog and a range of other characters – all created by Eastern Washington University students Fifty-eight EWU occupational therapy and physical therapy students on the Riverpoint Campus worked in teams with 12 children and one young adult to adapt Halloween costumes around their wheelchairs The costume recipients range in age from 2 to 23 “Emmett was really excited when he heard that they were going to do this program again and he wanted them to build him a horse,” said his mom has had spinal muscular atrophy since birth He enjoys playing the Zelda game with his brothers “Our church puts on a trunk-or-treat event on Saturday night and he’ll be excited to drive around in the parking lot to show all his friends,” she said this past week Emmett first got a glimpse of his steed for a final fitting Thursday night He wore a green tunic the students created while holding a shield they made He talked nonstop to the crew as they applied the finishing touches I’m going to play in my costume,” he told them “You guys must have done a lot of work on this.” EWU’s adapted-wheelchair costume program ran for two years before COVID-19 it partnered with Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane which donated funds toward the costume materials and the others are part of various Spokane pediatric therapy services Lowe’s also donated $500 in products for making the costumes The EWU students applied the kids’ ideas and plenty of cardboard an assistant professor and interim program director for EWU Occupational Therapy This EWU project fits what the students will do in their future jobs playing is what we call the occupation of childhood “A lot of the kids aren’t necessarily included in Halloween; it’s hard to include them how do we include them so people see the kids and not the chair?” including how to take the costume idea but still ensure the wheelchairs are functional the children need to be able to access communication devices All in the costumed group have a disability that requires use of a wheelchair with conditions ranging from cerebral palsy to spina bifida The eldest costume recipient at 23 was included at a request after family heard about the program and she’ll be sporting a Buzz Lightyear costume and rocket ship was all smiles at his fitting for Sonic the Hedgehog as five students worked around him A giant papier-mâché head of Sonic floated above his chair said the group had to problem solve around Anderson’s needs so he uses his right arm to stabilize himself,” Feldman said we wanted to be cognizant of that to make sure we weren’t creating something that was going to get in his way so we wanted to design something that wasn’t going to get in his way.” occupational and physical therapists often create adaptations and modifications and we decided to look at Halloween as a good inclusive activity,” Berg said “The students are using things like PVC pipe other materials and putting that together to create costumes “It’s things they would do because we use PVC pipe a lot as pediatric clinicians to help kids with whatever they need It’s just a way for the students to do something fun.” The job of an occupational therapist is to help patients be as independent as possible in daily life Shriners rehabilitation service manager and an occupational therapist She often speaks to the EWU students and attended an early costume-planning session when the young children told students what they wanted to be for Halloween “They met just to get ideas from the kids on what they wanted to dress up like “The wheelchair becomes part of the costumes “We’re always working on community involvement and inclusion This is a way to include kids who might be in a wheelchair or walker to be part of Halloween.” The groups also scheduled a parade 11 a.m.-noon Saturday on the first floor of Riverpark Square where the children could trick-or-treat at participating stores Between the costumed crowd and EWU students Berg couldn’t pick which one was more excited “One of the kids wanted his chair to be a fire truck so one of the students happens to be a firefighter and he’s bringing two of his buddies,” she said “They’re all dressing up in firefighter gear and they got this little guy a fireman’s hat “All the costumes turned out quite clever.” Give directly to The Spokesman-Review's Northwest Passages community forums series -- which helps to offset the costs of several He'll probably make his way to Cheltenham for the Triumph Hurdle, while Classic Getaway was very good in the Red Mills Chase I'm not quite sure yet where we'll go with him next Further support and information can be found at begambleaware.org and gamblingtherapy.org.
