Company working with GEH on deployment of BWRX-300 reactor technology
Sweden-based small modular reactor (SMR) project development company Kärnfull Next has signed cooperation agreements with landowners to conduct feasibility studies on two properties in Karlshamn municipality in southern Sweden
Kärnfull Next said that over the past year
Karlshamn has been recognised as a strategically important site for new nuclear power in Sweden
received funding from the Swedish environmental protection agency Naturvårdsverket to investigate the possibilities for new nuclear energy production
Analysis by the region of Blekinge – of which Karlshamn is a part – concluded the area as one of the most promising in the country for establishing SMRs
The national coordinator for new nuclear power
said recently that Karlshamn could rank among the top 10 potential locations for future reactor projects
“Karlshamn has several advantages that make it a strong candidate for new nuclear power,” said John Ahlberg
and the regional industry’s need for a stable power supply are factors that make Elleholm and Guo-Kopagarda [two areas in Karlshamn] particularly interesting for further analysis.”
Kärnfull Next said last week it was moving ahead with plans to develop an SMR park with four to six nuclear plants in the southeast of the country
The company said it has secured land rights for the project in the municipality of Valdemarsvik in Ostergotland county
The decision is based on a new cooperation agreement with landowner Latona Group
securing permanent land rights for the project
Kärnfull Next has been carrying out site selection and feasibility studies in several municipalities in Sweden since 2022
The company is working with reactor companies and utilities including GE Hitachi (GEH)
and Finnish state energy company Fortum to develop and package ready-to-build projects
In 2022 Kärnfull Next said it had signed an agreement to work with GEH on the deployment of its BWRX-300 SMR technology in Scandinavia
It also signed a memorandum of understanding with Fortum to jointly explore opportunities for developing SMRs in Sweden
Kärnfull Next said it offers “versatile energy hubs” that can be sited either on or offshore
For offshore delivery the hub will be delivered as a barge assembled in shipyards
The company is aiming to bundle SMRs with solid oxide electrolysers to provide electricity and clean hydrogen
Swedish project developer Kärnfull Next is progressing plans to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) in Blekinge region by signing cooperation agreements with landowners to conduct feasibility studies on two properties in Elleholm and Guö-Köpegårda in Karlshamn Municipality
on an extensive siting study carried out by Blekinge region
Kärnfull Next contributed its expertise and data to the study to identify suitable sites for new nuclear power production
As part of the feasibility study process, Karlshamn has emerged as a new candidate location within Kärnfull Next’s Re:Firm South SMR programme for southern Sweden. They join previously announced projects in Valdemarsvik
The municipality has received funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) to investigate the possibilities for new nuclear energy production
Blekinge Region’s analysis identified the area as one of the most promising for establishing SMRs
recently stated that Karlshamn could rank among the top 10 potential locations for future reactor projects
“Karlshamn has several advantages that make it a strong candidate for new nuclear power
and the regional industry’s need for a stable power supply are factors that make Elleholm and Guö-Köpegårda particularly interesting for further analysis,” said John Eliasson
Head of Business Development at Kärnfull Next
The feasibility studies under Re:Firm South include technical
societal and economic evaluations of the two properties – both of which have been rated as prime locations in the Blekinge Region’s location analysis
The process is being conducted in dialogue with Karlshamn Municipality and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the project aligns with both local and national energy goals
“We look forward to deepening our analyses and exploring how SMRs can contribute to a sustainable and stable energy supply in Blekinge,” Eliasson added
we are creating the conditions for Karlshamn to become an important part of Sweden’s future fossil-free energy system.”
In March 2022, Kärnfull Next signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based GE Hitachi regarding the BWRX-300
a 300MWe water-cooled SMR with passive safety systems
The design and licensing is based on larger boiling water reactors

A battery storage subsidiary of maritime company BW Group has committed to investing in Swedish energy storage developer Ingrid Capacity
Ingrid Capacity said this morning it had secured “around SEK1 billion (US$96.7 million)” of investment from Singapore-headquartered shipping and maritime player BW Group’s BW Energy Storage Systems (BW ESS)
The funding will go towards the execution of a 400MW pipeline of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects
as well as supporting the developer’s growth
Ingrid Capacity was founded in 2021 with chief strategy officer (CSO) Nicklas Bäcker quoted in Swedish media as saying that the company will aim to deploy around 2GW of energy storage in the Nordic region of Europe
with backing from shareholders including a property developer and investment firms
There was around 70MW online in total by the end of 2022
Sweden’s electricity system balancing has traditionally been done with hydroelectric power plants
demand for electricity is increasing with growing electrification in transport
Meanwhile at the same time many of the hydroelectric turbines
“are old and are not built or optimised for some of the fast response services needed in today’s system,” he said
Founded on the premise that the Swedish grid “isn’t very smart,” Ingrid Capacity has a 500MW pipeline of opportunities it is targeting in Sweden
Bäcker said in the interview that the developer wants to go for much bigger projects in the range of 100MW or more
but the lack of available grid capacity may be a chief limiting factor on how quickly those can happen
Investor BW ESS has so far been active in the UK’s already-booming BESS market through a partnership with and investment into UK developer Penso Power, formed in 2021. BW and Penso Power will be joint shareholders in projects developed from a 3GWh pipeline aiming to go into service in the next three to five years
BW Group is fully funding the pair’s UK projects, and a Penso Power joint venture (JV) was given planning permission in May 2022 for a 350MW grid-connected project in England that could host up to 1,750MWh capacity
while parent company BW Group is the main shareholder in Corvus Energy
a provider of battery technologies for maritime applications

Southern Sweden’s open air baths in Karlshamn took home first prize in the category of Urban Planning
a newly established award by the Municipality of Karlshamn
White Arkitekter’s design is open to all
blending with the landscape while standing out
The new cold baths in Karlshamn are an example of the revival of a tradition with historic roots
The city has been the previous home to several open-air baths — none of which exist today
White received the commission by the association “Karlbadhusets vänner” with the brief to design a new bath accessible to everyone
“I already knew that the bathhouse was appreciated by the residents. Now we have this official recognition, which is very rewarding. I have a strong feeling that the bath house in Karlshamn will inspire other Swedish cities”, says architect Sven Gustafsson from White’s office in Malmö
White’s design results in a structure that blends magnificently into the landscape and at the same time stands out with a bold symmetrical elegance
The bath house is constructed entirely of wood and accommodates two dressing rooms
Together with the adjacent “Väggabadet”
outdoor and cold baths and optimally located boasting magnificent views of the Bay of Hanö
which is an excellent example of good Scandinavian architecture
connects to the local history and helps to bring back a long-awaited feature which previously existed in the area”

Some 100-200MW of grid-scale battery storage could come online in Sweden this year
local developer Ingrid Capacity told Energy-Storage.news
In an interview conducted at the Energy Storage Summit a fortnight ago
chief strategy officer (CSO) Nicklas Backer of local developer Ingrid Capacity said there was around 70MW online by the end of last year
meaning the market could as much as quadruple in size this year
The country’s balancing needs have historically been provided by its hydroelectric capacity
“But due to a number of factors including electrification of society you now have big problems
especially in the south of Sweden,” Backer said
“A lot of the turbines for hydro in Sweden are old and are not built or optimised for some of the fast response services needed in today’s system
Overall the relative amount of hydro is decreasing too – the absolute amount is flat
Some small-scale hydro are getting stopped because of environmental permitting,” he added
Finland-based system integrator Merus Power pointed to a similar driver for the battery storage market there during an interview also done at the two-day event in London
Ingrid Capacity is a much newer company having been founded just last year
But it has already grown to have the “leading project pipeline within the Nordics as far as we know”
The company was born from the idea that the “grid isn’t very smart,” as he explained
you have a binary situation where you have DSOs (distribution system operators) that are more or less doing fine on capacity and then you have just one or two industrial users all of a sudden causing capacity constraints.”
“There are so few hours when there are problems so you don’t need more baseload in the system – maybe in 10 years
Storage can do the fast balancing but also the long-term balancing stuff.”
A big part of Bäcker’s role as CSO is to look at the long-term revenue picture for battery storage in Sweden
“The frequency markets are paying quite well right now though it is clearly a saturable market
and we have been looking at long-term profitable markets and how to help the Swedish market develop along those lines
Ancillary services prices have increased around 200% since 2020.”
“We have one site online and it does mostly ancillary services
It’s a pilot size project so we’re experimenting
but if we optimised purely on price it would just do ancillary services
The prices on Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) will have to drop for arbitrage to become as profitable.”
“Long-term the revenue stack will move to arbitrage
capacity markets and optimisation for grid owners and industrial processes
The ancillary services market in Sweden is around 600MW for FCR-up and FCR-down
Ingrid is deploying a 70MW project in Karlshamn and a 20MW system in Vimmerby
Various reports said the Karlshamn project is due for completion in 2024 but Ingrid Capacity has not yet given a fixed date for its operation
The market in Sweden is picking up in pace as Energy-Storage.news recently wrote, with DSO Ellevio Group ordering 70MW of projects from Alfen announced at the start of 2023
are set to be completed as early as this Spring
and typically uses the biggest European system integrators for its projects which are taking about 12 months to get to the ready-to-build stage
“The market structure here is relatively fragmented so the projects are quite small for now
meaning we pay a bit more per MWh compared to UK for example,” he added
The firm has projects over 100MW in size but Bäcker said they will be several years before being ready-to-build
Grid connectivity issues were a huge talking point at the Energy Storage Summit, as reported by our sister site Current± in its rolling coverage of the event’s second day
huge grid fees for storage are holding the market back while in Sweden it’s a bit better
“Grid fees as a percentage of opex are in the low single-digit figure range
but it’s complex and depends on where the storage asset is
Ingrid Capacity claims an overall energy storage project pipeline of 500MW in Sweden and a total target for the Nordics of 2GW
Its shareholders include property developer Engelbrekt Utveckling and investment firms Springbacka and Neptunia
Russia’s increasing boldness in Swedish waters and NATO’s growing activity in the Baltic Sea Region again underscore the strategic importance of Gotland
the Swedish media has learned of serious problems surrounding the second proposed Russian-German Nord Stream gas pipeline
the media mostly complained about the pipeline’s environmental impact
editors became aware of its potential political implications
including the potentially negative impact on Ukrainian economy and independence
the security climate in the Baltic Sea region has become extremely complicated
The major concern surrounds Slite Harbor on eastern Gotland
which the Kremlin wants to lease and expand
The Kremlin has also expressed a wish to expand Russian presence in the harbor of Karlshamn in southeastern Sweden
sensitive to Åland island’s strategic position between Finland and Sweden
have reopened discussion about re-arming those islands – which were demilitarized after the Crimean War (in 1856) by international accord
From Åland any powerful nation could dominate the sea and airspace over middle and northern Finland and Sweden
When the traditionally restrained media in Sweden and Finland express openly skeptical positions about Russia’s intentions
it is evident that the security climate in the Baltic Sea region has become extremely complicated
the Swedish (Latvian born) General Karlis Neretnieks effectively articulated the central
strategic role of Gotland for all modern military and political players in the central and southern Baltic region
His warnings were ignored for years by all Swedish political parties
Only recently has his professional perspective gained reasonable traction inside the government and parliament: namely that the nation that controls Gotland will also dominate the entire region’s airspace and naval defense
be able to deny anyone access into the Baltic Sea
In response Sweden has slowly begun rearming
Some hundred and fifty soldiers have been re-stationed on Gotland
Swedish defense spending is still less than half of tiny Estonia’s – just below 1% of GDP- compared with Estonia’s 2+%
Sweden’s major political parties (including the right-center Moderates
while their Prime Minister Reinfeldt was in charge)
downgraded defense to a lowly “special interest”
Now they optimistically want to jump on the NATO bandwagon in a single leap – without paying the required membership fee
which would require a doubling of the Swedish defense spending to 2% GDP
Largely overlooked in the Swedish debate is the fact that Gotland
In the evolving regional security situation – and to anticipate Putin – they could
Anything else would be a breach of duty for NATO
it may be useful to recall a few historical parallels
when the panic-stricken British began to lay mines off the coast of Norway
the much better prepared Germans quickly neutralized the move
they surprised everybody with their well-rehearsed “Operation Weserübung”
and in one strategic blow occupied all of Norway
We can also compare with the outbreak of the Seven Day War in the Middle East in the summer of 1967
The surrounding Arab states armed themselves
joined forces and vociferously threatened Israel with war
with its far superior strategic military intelligence and planning
wiped out the Arab air forces and took control the skies – a move that cemented the outcome of the war
What does this have to do with the island of Gotland
we can assume that the Kremlin has prepared its Operation Gotland far better than the long-winding
will ignore all existing conventions and declarations of neutrality
Always well-informed Kremlin will repel all NATO approaches on Gotland and act
Anything else would be a breach of duty for the Kremlin
with its “feministic foreign policy” and weak defenses
will not be difficult for a decisive Kremlin
Putin and his generals need not resort to provocation as they did in the Georgia war in 2008
it may simply suffice to call Sweden’s ambassador in Moscow to the Kremlin
mumble something about well-known Russian heavy bomber inflights over central Sweden
some pilot by mere accident could drop one or two tactical charges in the waters outside Stockholm

A ferry that ran aground last month off southeastern Sweden and started leaking oil into the Baltic Sea, arrived Thursday at a Swedish harbor where its tanks will be emptied
No new leaks were reported as the Marco Polo was towed into Karlshamn, public broadcaster SVT said. SVT quoted a Coast Guard spokesperson as saying the move was “undramatic and has gone completely according to plan.”
Separately, German shipping company TT-Line said “the remaining 300+ tons of heavy fuel oil from the unbreached tanks and unloading the cargo on board” the ferry would take place in the Swedish harbor and there would be “a more in-depth investigation into the damage sustained to the vessel.”
Authorities and volunteers continued to clean up the shores of southeastern Sweden where more than 500 birds are estimated to have been affected by oil that washed up there. An estimated 50 cubic meters (almost 1,800 cubic feet) of oil and oil waste have been removed so far.
The oil was reported along the shores of Pukavik Bay and in the gulf itself. Pukavik sits near Solvesborg, around 110 kilometers (70 miles) northeast of Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city.
The Swedish Coast Guard said it did not yet have an overview of how much oil spilled from the ferry.
The ferry was sailing along Sweden’s coast between the cities of Trelleborg and Karlshamn when it ran aground on Oct. 22 and started leaking oil. It continued traveling under its own power but got stuck a second time.
On Sunday, severe weather dislodged it, and the ferry drifted further out before getting stranded a third time. Each time the ferry stranded, leaks were reported.
On Wednesday, the ferry was pulled free and anchored in the bay off Karlshamn.

Stockholm: Sweden's coast guard said Wednesday that a salvage operation had been started for a passenger ferry that ran aground in October causing a large oil spill
ran aground south of the southern city of Karlshamn on October 22
with the vessel's 75 passengers safely evacuated
It stayed still for days but then drifted off due to strong winds on Sunday and once again ran aground
Around 7:00 am (0600 GMT) on Wednesday a salvage operation was initiated after the inital plan had to be revised due to the ship moving
"Shortly after 7:00 the ship was dislodged and floated by itself but was connected to two towing vessels," Valdemar Lindekrantz
During the morning the ship was slowly towed out to deeper water
"The plan right now is to freeze the situation by anchoring the ship in deeper water to get a view of the hull and determining what damage the ship has sustained," Lindekrantz said
An analysis would also be carried out to determine which oil tanks that would be needed to be emptied before the ship could be towed to port in Karlshamn
"We want it to happen as quickly as possible
but with the right conditions," Lindekrantz explained
Sweden on Friday fined two crew members for "recklessness in maritime traffic"
the coastguard said some 50 cubic metres (50,000 litres or 13,000 gallons) of oil and oil waste had been collected
Swedish authorities said last week it could take as long as a year to completely clean up the spill

A nice way to spend the day is to start with a walk around the medieval Lilla Torg
walk through the Gamla Väster district and then through the Slottsparken park
where there's the relaxed Slottsträdgårdens Kafé
to the Malmö Museum and/or Technical Museum
and then walk down to the beach at Ribersborg and along to the Kallbadhuset

you can either take a sauna or just enjoy a coffee
In the summer Ribersborg has a lot of other activities on offer

A ferry ran aground in southern Sweden on Sunday
but the vessel's 75 passengers were taken to safety
The Marco Polo TT-Line ferry got stuck south of Karlshamn early in the day
The ferry "leaked diesel fuel for several kilometres before running aground"
adding that thick fog in area and made it difficult to work out the extent of the spill
Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident and whether maritime law was breached
senior coastguard investigator Jonatan Orn told public radio P4
The ferry was operating between the ports of Trelleborg and Karlshamn
but Orn said the ferry had strayed from its usual route when it ran aground
The oil slick had reached land by late afternoon on a coastal strip in the municipality of Solvesborg
The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency has been called in to help and will begin decontaminating the site on Monday
The ship's hull had been holed in the bow and middle of its hull
but a senior official at the Swedish Transport Agency told the TT news agency there was no risk of it sinking

“We promptly responded to the changed requirements and from March 9
DFDS passengers sailing from Sweden to Lithuania will be offered conditions to be privately tested right before the journey
This service is particularly pertinent because some people were surprised by this requirement
with many arriving at the ferry unprepared
It is our duty to ensure that all passengers would be tested and so
alongside a private laboratory in Karlshamn
located 1.9 km from the terminal where our ferries dock
we established a testing space,” Vaidas Klumbys DFDS communications head for the Baltic States says
while passenger volumes are currently reduced
there remains a stable flow of individuals travelling to Sweden and Germany for work purposes: “Even under current conditions
but not all passengers are able to keep up with the new requirements
Many passengers had their trips planned before the requirement was established
and perhaps not everyone checks for the newest public information or don’t have time to be tested ahead of time
this service is important not only for those headed for Lithuania and Estonia but also for those travelling abroad.”
the ferry operator DFDS arranged for two testing zones to be set up in the ports of Klaipėda and Paldiski (Estonia)
passengers were offered the option to take coronavirus antigen tests prior to their journey and receive a certificate
“We see that this service is popular in both Lithuania and Estonia
with testing being performed for several weeks now
we made the decision to extend the testing team’s working time
with it operating 2.5 hours prior to departure at the Klaipėda central terminal.”
Sales and marketing head for the private laboratory SYNLAB
Viktorija Lapė spoke positively regarding the experience and results of the past few weeks of work at the Klaipėda central terminal: “We are very close to travelling individuals
we hear of their concerns prior to the journey and their happiness upon testing negative
this is not just an obligation in order to enter a different country
We present the test result within under an hour
It is those who remember the test with very little time left to the trip who are particularly happy – this offers them salvation because you cannot board the ferry without being tested.”
all passengers are tested prior to journeys on DFDS ships
while those lacking a certificate in line with requirements and those not included in the exemption list are not permitted to board: “Our ferries travel between four countries – Lithuania
Germany and Estonia and each of them has different requirements
if we sail to places where testing is required before the journey begins
we ensure that all passengers are tested.”
Qualitative SARS-CoV-2 antigen testing from the nasopharynx or saliva samples is performed at the central terminal in Klaipėda
special preparations are needed – the patient cannot eat
smoke or consume medication for around half an hour prior to the testing
Such requirements do not apply when taking samples from the nasopharynx
Qualitative antigen testing and issuing a certificate in three languages (Lithuanian
Klumbys emphasises that when organising the service for DFDS passengers
pricing the service appropriately was made a priority
