Satcube has moved to its new facility for mass-production of satellite terminals
both for existing product verticals and new ventures for on-the-move applications
Due to an increased demand for Satcube products
the company reached maximum production capacity in its former manufacturing facility
The new facility was finished during the summer and the move was executed in August
Full production capacity was reached by the end of September
With an almost threefold increase in production area to 1500m2
Satcube will have the possibility to recruit 50 new colleagues and increase production volumes drastically
The new automated production line will also enable the company to shorten the time between order and delivery
As part of Satcube’s manufacturing approach
the new facility will have automated and semi-automated production based on Green Lean Digital and Agile philosophies
Combining those forward-leaning standards with the higher grade of automation in the production line
Satcube will have the possibility to quickly scale up manufacturing for high-volume orders while keeping production costs low
as well as adapt to customer-specific requirements
all the Satcube employees were trained to understand the approach and methodology
An action group was then appointed and carried out several projects in production within the 5S methodology with very good results both in terms of the working environment but also the reduction of waste in production
which increased production capacity.
The new manufacturing premises are perfectly adapted to Satcube’s production needs
which will allow the company to improve and bring the lean work to new levels
quality and provide increased flexibility in the production process
this will increase the customer value of our products while minimizing the use of resources (materials)
which is something Satcube strives for from a sustainability perspective
As a further step, Satcube is also working with the ISO-9001 quality management system within the organization
to be able to meet and exceed our customers’ needs and expectations and improve our internal operations and processes
The work is ongoing and hope to lead to a certification during 2025
The new factory also displays a dedicated testing facility
making it possible to test up to 8 terminals simultaneously
thanks to unobstructed visibility for transmission in all directions
Satcube terminals are IP65 or IP67 certified and thoroughly tested before delivery
“When manufacturing complex high-tech products that require expert engineering
it is without a doubt a major advantage to offer close proximity between development and manufacturing departments,” said Henrik Strandén
Chief Operations Officer & Production Manager at Satcube
close approach and focus on teamwork leads to higher quality products and shorter time to market for new products
There are far more benefits to having in-house manufacturing
including full control of supply chain stability
we are able to realize a cost-efficient and reliable supply chain for our customers.”
“Satcube achieved strong year-on-year growth in revenue for two years in a row and is already serving major NGO’s
Due to significantly increased demand for Satcube products
we had reached maximum production capacity in existing facilities,” said Jakob Kallmér
“With a nearly three-fold increase in production available at our new facility
Satcube will be able to deliver substantial new volumes while tapping a highly automated production line to shorten time between order and delivery
highly agile setup will enable Satcube to both rapidly and seamlessly establish production of new products and deliver on custom orders with specialized requirements in a winning scenario for customers and the company’s long-term strategy.”

then his father brought the family west to farm
The Converses raised dairy cows and Allen fell in love with the animals
He graduated from Karlstad High School in 1981
Allen stayed on: he knew he had been called to be a farmer
Allen met a beautiful lady at the Pizza Factory in Karlstad
Allen was united in marriage to Susan Kazmierczak on October 25
in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church of Florian
Allen and Sue made their home near the Converse farm before settling into their present farm in Halma
In those early years he worked for area farmers and both Foerster and Loeffler gravel companies
What Allen truly enjoyed was farming and being his own boss
He had a knack for quietly observing a problem- then going out and fixing it
when a new calf came into the world by his hand, and watching his crops come up
Allen was so good with his nephews and nieces
giving them rides on his toys and teaching them many things
He loved his wife and they enjoyed 38 years of marriage side-by-side
He was given the nickname “Smiley” for he was always quiet and observant
He loved to hang out with others who were hardworking men like himself
He was a good man who will be deeply missed by all those who benefited from his wisdom
and Jon Converse; many nieces and nephews; and his relatives on the Kazmierczak side

— How long is considered to be a "long" hike
That's not even a warmup for one Kittson County man
David Johnson recently hiked the Continental Divide Trail
"It's the official end of my through-hike from New Mexico to Canada," Johnson said
especially now that I've gotten home and have gotten a good night's sleep
just taking my truck for a drive this morning
it's like being in a different world," Johnson said
Johnson had lived off water through his filter
"You can't carry 30 pounds of food with you; I mean
but you aren't going to make it very far up the mountains
go down a mile and then back up two again and then do that all day," he said
Johnson's interest in hiking only started a few years ago
but he decided to make the Continental Divide Trail his first big trek
"Most people do the Appalachian Trail and then the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) to get prepped to do the Continental Divide trail
These long hikes are tests of will and strength
and it was vital to make the right connections along the way
"There was a lot more people I met out there
sitting on a log because you ran into each other or something
they really open up to you when you're 40-50 miles out in a national forest or something and haven't saw anybody for three days," he said
While Johnson recommends others discover hiking
"I had a good outlook on hiking before this
but it's even better now that I've completed it," he said
Johnson lost about 70 pounds on the journey
He now plans to take some time to get reacquainted with life
— When Matt Brazier started doodling in class one day as an 11-year-old who was “bored in school,” it would have been hard to imagine that his sketch of a pickup truck with tracks would blaze the trail for one of the most successful companies in northwest Minnesota
the Karlstad-based company that specializes in manufacturing rubber track conversion systems for vehicles
and Mattracks has probably made tracks for it
The company also makes non-driven tracks for trailers and similar implements
Mattracks this year marks its 30th anniversary
they don’t get much more colorful than that
and my dad was always building things,” Matt Brazier
who owned and operated National Transmission stores in Thief River Falls and Bemidji at the time
spent the next few years engineering and developing prototypes before gaining a patent
after Matt — went on sale to the public in 1994
before moving to a small shop in Greenbush
“My dad was a mechanic and fixed transmissions,” Brazier said
The first Mattracks products targeted the recreation market
but the company today has expanded its product line to more commercial and even military applications
Mattracks is “constantly innovating new products” to stay ahead of the competition
“Some of our newest tracks are for tractors
we’ve got some new row crop tracks — so whatever innovations have been on the ag side,” she said
“But we do have some new tracks for ATVs and UTVs that are in prototype mode right now.”
Mattracks products can be installed on most vehicles in an hour
compared with up to 15 man-hours to install some of the competitors’ products on large farm implements
“Ours is designed to be as easy as changing a tire,” she said
The sheer number of products also sets Mattracks apart
“Most of the competitors have two models,” he said
Brazier’s doodling has taken him on quite a ride over the past three decades
After graduating from Greenbush High School in 1999
to learn how to mold and ply rubber before going to work in the family business
“What I learned in those years I don’t know if I would have ever learned in school,” Brazier said
I was 17-18 years old and went to California to trade shows
Mattracks today employs about 50 people between the 150,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Karlstad and another facility a few hundred yards to the north where the rubber tracks are made
a process that was off-limits to a Herald reporter during a recent visit
A third building even farther north is used for maintenance
As the company’s Field Operations Coordinator
Matt Brazier has traveled the world to places such as China
“We were just in Oman in August (2023) doing some stuff for the border patrol over there
“I would say 40% of our sales are overseas,” Brazier said
We just shipped a bunch of stuff to Greenland and New Zealand
Mattracks also has a small sales force that works out of an office in Shanghai
built a new 300,000 square-foot factory in China to build Mattracks Powerboards — basically snowboards with tracks
Glen Brazier sold the factory to his partner but kept his best people and started an office in downtown Shanghai
from which Mattracks sells its product across China
they put them on their vehicles,” Matt Brazier said
“They can do that out of there versus me flying over there doing a show or something
Mattracks products have also been featured on the big screen
The company designed the lower drive unit of the T-1 Robot featured in 2003’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” under contract with Stan Winston
is known for his work on such movies as “Aliens,” “Jurassic Park” and “Predator 2,” in addition to the “Terminator” series
Five of the robot units were made for “Terminator 3,” and one is on display in the Mattracks museum in Karlstad
a work in progress featuring some of Glen Brazier’s inventions and products the company has made over the years
ranging from military vehicles to a 7-Up machine on tracks
Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage from the TV series “Mythbusters” built two Mattracks-equipped 7-Up machines for a commercial that aired nationally during the Super Bowl and throughout the year in 2003
The museum is open to the public by appointment
“It excites me when I get to go into the museum and think back and remember what we did back then,” Matt Brazier said
the company rented three limos and took all of its employees to see the movie in Grand Forks
They did the same thing when “Fast & Furious 8,” a 2017 film starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
That film also included Mattracks products
things change so fast that I bet most people in town here don’t know that we’re making stuff for movies,” Brazier said
“And we do so much of it you can’t even enjoy what you’re doing
“We have the coolest products there are to market,” he added
“We have so many different products that we can just go crazy with marketing
And a lot of our customers do that for us – they put all kinds of cool videos online.”
the company has developed “sort of a cult-like following,” said Gjerde
“We’ll see things on YouTube or something all the time,” Gjerde said
“The sky’s the limit on visualizing applications and hearing about things
advertising and graphic design is done in-house
Glen Brazier owns Wagon Wheel Ridge and Kick’n Up Country
Wagon Wheel Ridge hosts an annual “Max’s Bash Biker Rally,” weddings and other special events
as well,” Matt Brazier said of Kick’n Up Country
the company doesn’t have any special plans to mark Mattracks’ 30th anniversary
“A huge celebration” isn’t beyond the realm of possibility sometime down the road
and we’re more focused on the business right now,” Brazier said
We’ve got lots and lots of stuff in the works.”
FARGO — A house built by Fargo students at South High School is starting a nearly 150-mile journey to its permanent home
It was built by students in construction classes during the school year
It's one of two houses that are being taken up to Karlstad
after being purchased by Greenway Environmental
Greenway Companies owner Troy Peterson says he's been bringing houses to Karlstad for around 20 years to create more housing in the city
"It's just been a great partnership between the City of Karlstad and me
20 houses over the last few years — moving them into town
fixing them up — and it's a win-win for everybody," Peterson said
Fargo Public Schools has three construction programs in the district at Fargo South High School
They use floor plans chosen by buyers or designed by students in family and consumer sciences (FACS) and interior design classes
Director of career and technical education Dr
Denise Jonas says the program gives students important skills and pride in their accomplishments
"If the student becomes a worker of the trades
It is a life skill and a career skill when it's all said and done," Jonas said
The district is relocating five projects from the last few school years this summer
Most of them are crossing the river into Minnesota
As time goes by, things seem to be getting better for Färjestad Karlstad who have continued to improve their Champions Hockey League results these past few campaigns
The Swedes followed up their Round of 16 exit in 2022/23 by advancing to the Quarter-Finals in 2023/24 and have now progressed further once again as they prepare for their first-ever Champions Hockey League Final appearance - join us for a look back at their Road to the Final
As one of three Swedish clubs vying for the European Trophy
Färjestad elevated themselves to the top of the contenders from the early going as they put together a pair of convincing wins to kick off their seventh CHL season where they outscored their opponents 11-2 in that span
Game Days 3 and 4 saw Färjestad back on the road as they went up against Hungarian challengers Fehérvár AV19 before travelling to Finland to take on 2023 CHL Champions Tappara Tampere
A goal so spectacular that is was shortlisted and nominated for Best Goal of 2024/25
One point that's often made about the pan-European competition is the quality of the competitors that have battled for the European Trophy for the past ten years
After staying undefeated through the first four contests
Färjestad's next two challengers would put that perfection to the test
Storhamar Hamar didn't break easy either as they managed to stay neck-and-neck with the Swedes until midway through the second when Färjestad's offence netted two tucks five minutes apart
Shot totals for that contest were 21-19 in favour of the Swedes
but Färjestad survived to claim their sixth victory and take the top spot in the Standings
the Swedes were matched up against a Tappara team that barely squeaked into the Playoffs
the Finns pushed the top team to the brink
conceding defeat by a one-goal margin as Färjestad claimed the series 6-5 on aggregate
Axel Bergkvist converted on the powerplay in the third period to make it 3-2 as Färjestad would eventually take the one-goal edge back home following the First Game
Tappara came prepared in their next meeting
as they put on a much better effort that nearly cost the Swedes their season
Tappara's Tanus found twine with just under two minutes to go to tie things at 5-5 on aggregate
but it was Lodin's goal three minutes into the extra session that helped propel Färjestad to the next leg
Up until this point, the Swedish side had yet to leave a game on the losing side of things. But events changed in their Quarter-Finals match-up against Red Bull Salzburg as Färjestad found themselves with their first deficit of the season in a 3-1 loss to the Austrians in the First Game
Salzburg's Peter Schneider led his team with three points on the night, including the primary assist on Nash Nienhuis' eventual game-winner in a game where the Swedes were unable to create any kind of offence as they fired just 19 shots on net
a quick return to form was in order for Färjestad in the Return Game as they dominated the play from start to finish resulting in a 6-0 defeat that showcased their lethal mix of offence and defence and gave them a 7-3 aggregate victory
The Swedes followed up one six-goal showing with another, claiming their First Game against Sparta Prague 6-2 as their solid play continued into the Semi-Finals
What was a close contest between the two clubs quickly changed in the third when Steen and company exploded to produce three goals and secure the aggregate advantage
Events didn't go much better for the Czechs in the Return Game in Sweden as Färjestad's powerplay struck twice to secure the first two goals before the Swedes found the net two more times to make it 10-4 on aggregate
Lagacé continued to be a force between the pipes as he finished the series having stopped 47 of 51 shots over 120 minutes of hockey
Not many weaknesses exist in Färjestad's game
How will the best offence in the CHL stack up against the best defence

Red Bull Salzburg faced off against Färjestad Karlstad in their first-ever encounter in the Champions Hockey League
as the two teams battled it out in their Quarter-Finals First Game
Both teams came into the game in top form and full of energy
having cruised through the earlier stages of the Playoffs with relative ease
ending in a hard-fought victory for Salzburg
The opening period was a closely contested affair, with plenty of chances at both ends of the ice. Salzburg broke the deadlock at 16:29 when Ryan Murphy capitalised on an opportunity at the right circle
However, their lead was short-lived. Just 33 seconds later, Marian Studenič equalised for Färjestad with a brilliant backhand shot under the crossbar
No more goals followed and the first 20 minutes concluded with the score locked
The second period saw Salzburg take control of the game once again. Nash Nienhuis delivered the go-ahead goal at 28:24
pouncing on a turnover to score while short-handed
Färjestad thought they had levelled the score in the 34th minute
but their goal was disallowed due to a call for a foul that occurred just before the goal was scored
Salzburg lit the lamp on the powerplay that followed
extending their lead to 3-1 by the end of the period
The final frame was an emotional and physical battle
A series of roughing calls and even an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty reflected the rising tensions
neither team managed to add to the scoreboard in the third period
earning a crucial two-goal cushion heading into the Return Game in Sweden in two weeks' time
the Austrians couldn’t prevent the Swedes from dominating on the scoreboard
The second period saw fast-paced play as both teams rushed up and down the ice, though fewer risks were taken as they settled into the game. Penalties were frequent, with physical post-whistle play resulting in roughing calls on both sides. Once again, Färjestad capitalised on a powerplay after a tripping call, with Axel Bergkvist firing a shot from the blue line just over the goalie’s shoulder to restore their comfortable lead
increasing their advantage to a whopping 6-1
Klagenfurt managed to score a late consolation goal
ending the game 6-2 in favour of Färjestad
while Klagenfurt will want to forget this game as soon as possible

CLINTON – Russell Karlstad has “no regrets” about his three years as facilities director
I made a lot of good friends over there,” he said from his new office in Fitchburg City Hall
But as Clinton finalizes the process of hiring a new facilities director
Karlstad reflected on pulling together a new department designed to consolidate resources
a substantial change in a town like Clinton
“There’s no magic to it,” Karlstad said of the process
He spent months observing how things worked and learning people’s capabilities before making adjustments
“getting the departments to buy in was not as difficult as was first assumed.” He said that “most of the pushback was from the boards
With a goal of finding the top performers and putting them into place
since the department used workers that had been under different departments
Although there were some “fiefdoms,” he said
“Once everyone was a real team player and bought into that aspect
But starting with a clean slate meant “it’s all on you to get it done.”
Karlstad said he was able to improve efficiencies
but weren’t connecting,” but benefited from the change as they became part of a larger team that could share work and get help as needed
with people going to him if they wanted something rather than individual workers
Karlstad said the building needing the most work is the senior center
While the renovated Foster Mansion is a show piece
the renovation that turned it into the senior center did not solve all the building’s issues
The previous $2 million investment “didn’t go far enough,” Karlstad said
much of which is being detailed in a plan being drafted
“It’s beyond where it needs to be painted,” he said
predicting five years before major problems such as the front porch collapsing
He sees an investment needed of $2.5 million to $3 million
Karlstad said he supports the idea of fixing and keeping it for the next 50 years
“in which case it’s a bargain.”
the cupola is leaking and needs work as well
And he praised the program work being at the senior center
noting the building could not be used for much else other than housing
its previous use as the Clinton Home for the Aged
And it anchors the center along with other iconic buildings
“That corner helps make Central Park what it is today.”
He noted the state has an unfunded bill that would contribute $465,000 to the project
something he has discussed with Clinton’s new state senator (for Precincts 1 and 2)
who has an office near Karlstad’s in City Hall
“I’m still a cheerleader for the town,” Karlstad admitted
he had helped out on a part-time interim basis
“They made a great thing when they made Central Park,” he said. And that includes Town Hall
But he said that “the library is probably the best building in the town center,” referencing its scale and design
Having gotten familiar with all the buildings
which “does a great job using space and providing services to the town,” should only be used as a library
Noting some still see libraries as holding books
an addition would be the best use of funds
“Clinton doesn’t need a huge library
Karlstad has some general advice for his successor
My future was not secure” in Clinton
with a lack of support from some officials
“We fixed a lot of problems.” He hasn’t entirely stopped
He said four weeks ago he reviewed a capital plan
“I’m happy to meet with whoever they hire to move forward,” he added
he said Fitchburg was “a good landing place
— The legacy of a fallen Marine from Karlstad will live on in a unique way
Through man's best friend who was this Marine's best friend
it was somebody that he could hang out with
He always slept with them when he was home," explained his mother Markelle Kuznia
He even got his mother a German Shepherd to keep to keep her company when he left for camp
"The first female Marines were called Mollys
and so he wanted to name it Molly," she said
Riley Kuznia's time with Molly was cut short. He was shot and killed New Year's Day 2019 in the locker room at the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington
Another Marine pointed a gun at his head and pulled the trigger
"I'm constantly trying to keep Riley's memory alive
and can help people remember they great person he was," said Markelle Kuznia
a friend told her about Semper K9 Assistance Dogs
It is a Virginia-based organization that provides service dogs for vets and was founded by a Marine
The service dogs are trained by volunteer K-9 coaches
"I was hearing a lot of veterans that were having to wait two
$30,000 of their own money to train the dog to be their service dog," said executive director Christopher Baity
The organization has graduated 70 service dogs since it started back in 2013
the Kuznia family called with an unique idea
"(W)e don't get the opportunity to do this special of a tribute on a regular basis," said Baity
They offered to breed Molly with the hopes that one of the puppies in the litter could be trained as a service dog to help a vet in need
gets to go out there and gets to continue his name
gets to continue his mission and hopefully spread the love that Riley and his family have for veterans and for this country," said Baity
Baity traveled from Virginia to Karlstad to pick out "Riley."
and I can give back to the vets," said Markella Kuznia
Riley the German Shepherd appears to be carrying on his namesake's legacy
but he's performing at the level of a 10 or 11-month-old dog," said Baity
Riley the service dog will likely be paired with a veteran sometime in the Spring
and I just think it's a great way to honor Marines
To help his brothers out," said Markella Kuznia

The EU legal framework on personal data protection is key in an effort to better control the processing of personal data while ensuring an adequate level of protection
Even the best legislative efforts cannot keep up to speed with the pace of innovative technology and business models that challenge the way personal data is processed and privacy is protected across the EU and beyond; therefore
examining what is at stake and where threats thereto originate from becomes of paramount importance

is celebrating 75 years in fast-changing and transformative industry
television and internet services for towns in northwestern Minnesota
his son Curtiss Wikstrom serves as the president and general manager of the Wikstrom Telephone Company
and takes pride in the service his family provides in the region
“You can’t go anywhere and get better service than what we have,” said Curtiss
purchased the Northwestern Minnesota Telephone Company for $4,500
They took possession of the company on Jan
Curtiss was just 3 when his family purchased Wiktel
who at the time ranged in ages from 3 months old to 9 years old
and another brother was born in 1948 and another sister in 1951
All of the children were involved in the family business early on
climbing telephone poles and operating the switchboard
Most of his siblings still serve on the company’s board of directors
telephone technology has evolved from operator-controlled switchboards
“I have lived through the majority of the technical progress in the world - in the millions of years it’s been here
I’ve lived through most of it,” said Curtiss
“That’s especially true of the telephone.”
all phone lines in the company switched to dial service
the company started installing fiber optic cable for the internet
While customers can still get telephone and television service through Wiktel
the bulk of the company’s business is broadband internet
but we still have telephones and we still are operating to try to keep our service available throughout the area,” said Curtiss
most Wiktel customers will be connected to broadband internet via fiber optic cables
says this achievement is the result of the Wikstrom family’s dedication to customers
“A lot of what Wikstrom’s has done hasn’t been because they had to — it’s because they wanted to
even the fiber into the homes in all of our small towns,” she said
“This wasn’t anything the FCC has provided assistance for or anything like that
They just knew that’s what they wanted to see.”
Wiktel also provides mobile communications companies with a backbone network for data
Taggart explained that companies like AT&T and Verizon used to just rent out cell towers
but now more heavily rely on Wikstrom’s fiber technology to provide service to the area
Wiktel’s area of service stretches from East Grand Forks to Angle Inlet in the Northwest Angle
there are four main systems that operate independently of each other
people in Roseau could still call each other
decentralized system will keep emergency communications working in northwestern Minnesota
“Our philosophy is to continue to make sure that everybody can call each other in our local area
Curtiss served in the Air Force in the late 1960s and early '70s
His experiences in the Air Force have made him aware of the threat of nuclear war
and he is especially wary since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022
I actually rode on top of nuclear weapons,” he said
I was within a few minutes of dropping bombs somewhere else in the world
the decentralization and redundancy of Wiktel’s network would allow emergency communications to continue in the area
Having seen firsthand the advances in communication technology in the last 75 years
Curtiss expects the technology to continue to change in the future
He's optimistic that technology will change the way people live for the better
go to the doctor and attend school through the internet has cut down the need to travel
which he believes could help save energy and cut costs for people
“As long as we don’t have excessive government regulation and control
and let people be free to innovate and make things work
the world’s not going to come to an end,” he said
“It’s going to just get better if we leave it alone and let people be free.”
Wiktel plans to formally celebrate its 75th anniversary during Karlstad’s annual Moosefest
