Megan Kinna’s lacrosse career was in jeopardy until she found her passion again Megan Kinna was one decision away from leaving lacrosse for good until her support system urged her to keep playing where her lacrosse journey started with playing box lacrosse The only option for 4-year-old Kinna was to play on a boys’ team She quickly learned physicality and developed a hard shot Canada slowly built up its field lacrosse youth system Kinna made the switch just before she was a teenager The adjustment period was met with frustration because she had to relearn fundamental skills to use with shallow pockets and different-sized sticks “It was a frustrating process because of the pocket and having nothing to work with,” Kinna said so I personally didn’t love the girls' side so not being able to hit or go in for a check meant I really had to tone everything down.” The forward refused to make excuses for her struggles and embraced the creativity aspect of the new playing style She transferred her powerful shot from box to the field which made her a threat from long distance Kinna relied on the strength she learned from the boys’ team to pick up ground balls and get transition goals the more she realized a collegiate or professional pathway was attainable Kinna’s recruiting process landed her at Northwestern She played with the likes of Erin Coykendall and Izzy Scane Kinna underwent even more adjustments since the American and Canadian styles of lacrosse have slight differences Kinna was no stranger to tweaking her game She adapted some of her skillset to match the Americans while staying true to herself “Everyone has their own little ways of doing things and cradling,” Kinna said “Canadians play a little lower because of box lacrosse and cradle differently.” but then suffered mental health setbacks that affected her passion for lacrosse It got to a point where she considered giving up the sport and prioritized ensuring her body was in the right condition “At times I remember talking to my parents and they pushed me to keep going,” Kinna said The moments where I’ve had mental health struggles Kinna’s Northwestern teammates wrote her letters of strength and encouragement She stuck with the game and rediscovered her passion for the sport She credits the lacrosse community for helping her especially becoming a coach and role model to the next generation of athletes Kinna didn’t have many female lacrosse role models to look up to so she wants to give young girls someone to emulate “Lacrosse literally lifted me out of it,” Kinna said and that was the most heartbreaking thing.” Kinna will join the WLL All-Stars for their trip to Japan which will be her second time playing there Kinna participated in a tournament in Japan last fall She believes having the opportunity to compete again is a privilege which might not have been possible without her perseverance Kinna believes it’s important to express both sides of life “It was a very isolating time,” Kinna said “Being able to showcase that and be honest to show the real me We’re all human and we’re all very similar.” Tickets PLL Shop Careers Where to Watch Media Credentials year's international tournament was a special one because it was the first time that there was a World Lacrosse Women's Box Championship with 10 teams travelling to New York to compete for the inaugural title Team Canada included a handful of B.C with Megan Kinna representing Maple Ridge as part of the 23-woman roster it was such an honour to be named to the team alongside some Canadian legends and incredible new talent to the international stage," said Kinna The women's team had a particularly electric start to the tournament with Kinna netting herself four goals and two assists Every aspect of Team Canada's game play was firing on all cylinders with them only giving up their first goal during their fifth game of the tournament But even after their shutout streak was broken remaining undefeated as they entered the gold medal match against Team USA "We had a lot of confidence and energy heading into the gold," said Kinna This was by far the closest match of the tournament for the Canadians with the Americans opening up the scoring with a couple of unanswered goals.  and the scoring continued to go back and forth throughout most of the game Team USA unleashed a streak of scoring in the final eight minutes of the match that allowed them to pull ahead and snag the 10-7 victory "Unfortunately couldn’t bring home the gold but I hope we still did our country proud," said Kinna.  Kinna wasn't the only Maple Ridge player who got to experience the thrill of competing in the inaugural World Lacrosse Women's Box Championship Darya Saed also participated in the tournament except she didn't represent the Maple Leaf which she said made for an interesting challenge ahead of the first tourney "It was such an amazing experience to be a part of the inaugural women’s championships," said Saed.  with all of the training and practices I had to do to be able to perform my best especially since I could not practice with my team because they were so far away." When she finally got to don the Netherlands jersey for the first match against Team USA "We knew we had all of our fans supporting us which made the vibes in the arena so amazing," she said. "Our coaches had a few rules that we had to follow during each game The two Maple Ridge athletes faced off against each other on Sept which Kinna said was one of her favourite moments in the entire tournament "They had fantastic energy and made the game really fun and enjoyable," said Kinna. "Their fans were a blast I Feel Like A Woman!' started playing over the speakers especially because women haven’t been allowed into the box world championships before." Saed managed to cast aside 32 of the 43 shots she faced from Team Canada her fellow Maple Ridge athlete managed to sneak a couple of shots past her "I loved playing against all of the other teams "My teammates are people I will never forget The men's team also had a Maple Ridge connection with former player and now coach Curt Malawsky joining the men's team in their quest for gold at the World Lacrosse Box Championship who currently serves as the head coach of the Vancouver Warriors in the National Lacrosse League was named an assistant coach for Team Canada ahead of the 2024 Worlds The men's team had a similarly successful start to the women's going undefeated through the entire tournament and also finding themselves facing Team USA in the final match It was a close competition up until the third quarter when the Canadians went on a scoring rampage and netted themselves seven unanswered goals within the span of 10 minutes They closed out the match with a 13-7 victory Dialogue and debate are integral to a free society and we welcome and encourage you to share your views on the issues of the day. Scroll through to read our conversation and explore her new collection with McGee & Co "I often find myself inspired by the things around me that carry beauty." I had always dreamed of being a freelance artist but never dreamt of it exploding quite the way it has so far I loved drawing and creating and all throughout school I loved my art classes When I went to university to study art I was mostly focused on the medium of drawing until I had to take an abstract painting course That dread quickly changed to a complete love for abstract painting I first started selling my work at university to family and friends and once that faded it continued to grow into acquaintances I adored painting and didn’t want to stop exploring that medium and then enough to quit my other job to be a full-time artist I have just naturally continued to grow my business (mainly through Instagram) and sell my work privately through my website joykinna.com It has been a gift to be able to do that and I am often reminded of my humble beginnings I want the viewer to be able to rest easy and enjoy the presence of my work while being interested in the technique and the visual components It is a conversation starter and can easily change the whole vibe of a room “I believe the spaces you are in can greatly affect your mind and creativity.” @joykinna I believe the spaces you are in can greatly affect your mind and creativity My studio is currently on a farm property with big fields just a few minutes from the city It is a quiet and calm space where I am able to clear my head and focus on my art while I am there I keep the studio as organized as an art studio can be I utilize the natural light and white walls to help me stay focused and give me clarity as I paint The minimal aesthetic of my studio space helps the work to be the focus most walls have art on them and each item we bring in holds some sort of value to us whether is it for a specific function or aesthetic I am a sucker for vintage and family heirlooms I have many beautiful Scandinavian home pieces from my grandmother that I’ll continue to style and cherish in my home and negative space all play a role in providing the type of calming rest I want in a space I hope my work is used in such a way in spaces and is passed on through families as a timeless piece of art I believe art has such an integral impact on space and the people that dwell within it and like any beautifully crafted object or piece of furniture Art can be the thing that brings a room to life by accenting or complimenting the other textures colors and pieces of furniture that reside in the space I have had the privilege of working with many interior design firms to bring clients’ spaces to life It’s always a pleasure to work with designers to create a cohesive palette that will bring life to a beautifully designed space My work is heavily inspired by three things: the process of making art When working with McGee & Co these three things aligned perfectly in this collaboration The paintings created were made with homes and work spaces in mind and overall work that brought some more interest into its visual space enjoying the beauty in every aspect of life Another aspect of this is recognizing that beauty impacts our lives daily I often find myself inspired by the things around me that carry beauty Making time and space to take in these things is essential I am in the process of completing my Fall 2022 collection which I will be selling through my website – www.joykinna.com so it is always an exciting lead-up to launch I cannot wait for my collectors (old and new) to get their hands on this new series Shared by UT Health San Antonio’s Military Health Institute hosted a signing president of Santa Rosa Junior College since last year has marked several firsts — becoming the first woman Latina and openly queer president in the college’s 106-year history She delivered the event’s keynote speech at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma “I was really nervous about speaking today,” Garcia said to the crowd but she emphasized the importance of being vulnerable to foster community and crucial dialogue Garcia drew on statistics that show two-thirds of transgender community college students in the U.S grapple with at least one basic need — they are most likely and have high rates of suicide and suicidal ideation A panel of five other local queer trailblazers boasted more firsts Christopher Mahurin last year became the first openly gay officer to be promoted to Office of Education superintendent when she was elected in 2022 as well as the first woman to hold the position in the past 100 years The event brought together LGBTQ+ pioneers with local government officials To continue to create safe spaces and create change panelists encouraged attendees to come together as partners and communicators The panel — which also included Grace Villafuerte vice president of Sonoma County Pride; and Rowan Gomez founder of Rohnert Park Pride — answered questions ranging from adversities they encounter and their coping mechanisms to ways leaders can help prevent similar adversities As leaders in their respective professions the trailblazers make visible identities often not seen “We are all standing on the shoulders of so many who sacrificed before us and we all know how fragile that is,” Carter said need “to be unrelenting when (they) have access to power Mahurin encouraged LGBTQ+ members and allies to “give people grace” and “lean into the people in your community.” Villafuerte spoke from her intersectional identities as a Filipina lesbian widow and encouraged people to connect through sharing experiences “Talk about things people feel uncomfortable about because it will begin to be normalized,” she said You can reach Breaking News Intern Amy Moore at 707-526-8545 or amy.moore@pressdemocrat.com Kinna Crocker is a Santa Rosa attorney daring political currents of the age The first suicide bomber in English literature is a crazed anarchist professor in Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent who stalks around London wired up with explosives he has only to squeeze a rubber ball in his pocket to annihilate the present and clear a space for a utopian future His political comrades are a bunch of sinister continental freaks who succeed in blowing up a young boy with learning difficulties impressively well-informed history of the movement has to admit that it has had its fair share of bombers and assassins Yet she also illustrates its extraordinary creativity a brainchild of the Unholy Trinity of French libertarian socialist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Russian revolutionaries Mikhail Bakunin and Peter Kropotkin anarchism rejected what it saw as Karl Marx’s narrow economic and proletarian viewpoint the abolition of private property and the overthrow of the state Both see the role of the state as defending private property Marx thinks that the state will eventually wither away while anarchists believe in helping it on its way as soon as they can Where the two camps really collide is on the question of power Power for Marxists is in the service of material interests Anarchists agree about the material interests Anarchism isn’t opposed to government as such just to any form of it that isn’t self-government which involves the tyranny of the majority over the individual it is just a more kid-gloved kind of coercion Yet no society can survive without coercion There is nothing despotic about being made to drive on the left or stopping your flatmate from playing the bagpipes all night Rules can facilitate freedom as well as obstruct it: if everyone drives on the same side of the road The political state is indeed a source of lethal violence but it also arranges for children to learn how to tie their shoelaces There is the authority of those who are seasoned in the struggle against patriarchy Telling someone something they need to know isn’t always “hierarchical” as some slightly wackier libertarians have maintained Some anti-hierarchical anarchists believe that all opinions hold equal weight in which case the view that all opinions don’t hold equal weight is also true no less) came to Europe in the late 1960s with vital information on the political turmoil in the United States some students refused to listen to him on the grounds that lecturing is a form of violence Occupy London protesters in 2011 Photograph: Ben Stansall/AFP/Getty ImagesEven so imaginative political currents of the modern age from the Paris Commune of 1871 to the Occupy movement of 2011-12 (20,000 Parisians were slaughtered in the wake of the Commune a fact that those appalled by the French revolutionary terror generally fail to recall) the movement had become a global presence from Uruguay to Japan Rejecting state socialism and revolutionary vanguards it devoted itself instead to direct action flexible networks and grass-roots organising Kinna’s book is packed with information about this rich history all of it delivered in a curiously toneless Some of the pioneering figures of modern anarchism Yet the term isn’t all that restrictive: as Kinna points out individualistic anarchism and quite a lot more one of whose advocates once sponsored something called Groucho Marxism is basically just a matter of having a good time There are those activists for whom there can’t really be anarchist parties or political programmes since parties and programmes are part of the problem rather than the solution Anarchist politics thus becomes a form of anti-politics You can only bring down the state by organising Disruption and transgression thus become the order of the day Only by keeping on the move can you avoid becoming part of the system yourself freedom means freedom from the constraints of other people This was the view of the 19th-century thinker Max Stirner one would like to know what Mrs Stirner thought about that) has not had many takers in anarchist circles as opposed to the common-or-garden variety What has been more popular is the view that human nature is inherently good but is corrupted by external powers One of the many problems with this view is that power works as well as it does because we internalise it so that to violate it would be to violate ourselves The Government of No One ends with a useful set of brief anarchist biographies but overlooks the career of Michel Foucault one of the most influential of modern political thinkers There is also no entry for Edward Carpenter who around the year 1900 ranked among Britain’s most celebrated anarchist writers and was a pioneer of gay politics I should declare a personal interest in drawing attention to this fact since I once spent four dreary years writing a doctoral thesis on him Humour by Terry Eagleton is published by Yale. But I think we are people that can handle it.” Among the unexpected blessings Melissa counts is the upcoming Kinna Family Car Show Fundraiser from 9 a.m at the Shop 'n Save on Philadelphia Avenue in Chambersburg Registration costs $10 and trophies will be awarded to the top 25 cars and Shop 'n Save will have a hot bar with food available for purchase is hosting the car show benefit as one of the many fundraisers she runs and advertises on her Facebook news page The Chamber She expects a couple hundred participants in the show and hope to raise around $3,000 for the Kinna family to use toward their medical expenses but heard of them through a friend of a friend and wanted to offer support through one of her shows Melissa and her husband Nick Kinna were concerned for their young son He began vomiting and having seizures and they took him to Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick so his parents took him back to the hospital his primary care physician suggested taking him to Children's National Medical Center in Washington 'We need to do a spinal tap and check for viral meningitis,'” Melissa said Though doctors never determined which virus Noland had contracted they did determine that he had an infection in his spinal cord fluid all the pain he had been feeling,” Melissa said Noland also had an MRI as part of his testing Doctors noted something unusual but were unable to determine what it was at the time They recommended follow-up in December 2011 for another MRI after the MRI he went right back to being a happy kid,” Melissa said when he returned for a follow-up MRI in December “They watched it for almost another year before they started chemo,” Melissa said then he had a break for a year and a half.” Noland became part of a two-year immunotherapy clinical study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute involving an MEK inhibitor “We thought that would be great if he never needed meds again And that was around the same time I was diagnosed with stage three T-cell cutaneous lymphoma.” “I have a non-Hodgkins lymphoma that's treatable but not curable,” Melissa said “My doctors are trying to hold off on chemo and radiation as long as possible so I'm being treated by systemic treatments.” According to National Cancer Institute's website is treatment using substances that travel through the bloodstream reaching and affecting cells all over the body Chemotherapy and radiation can shorten life span she expects to undergo a bone marrow transplant She looks at the bright side of that prospect pointing out that she will only need a “half match” for transplant as opposed to some transplants that require a whole match While Noland would not be able to be a donor They'll put me on the registry when they need to,” she said Melissa said her first notable symptom was itching even areas that were never exposed to the sun and she tried to reason that perhaps she had an allergic reaction to the sun or sunblock or that maybe she had a food allergy or a gluten allergy I was itching and red and I knew something was wrong,” she said but her blood counts were normal and there was nothing to explain the problems she was having knowing her symptoms were common to some cancers she went back to a dermatologist for a skin biopsy Where are we going next?' It made me think I was a little crazy very rare type of cancer that typically happens to people in their 50s or 60s,” Melissa said so they have a longer time for me to fight this It's definitely different for someone my age It might be that I will have a better chance.” She went to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in February It was the same month Noland returned for follow up after stopping treatment in November and they learned his brain tumor had grown in size by 25 percent Melissa counts herself and Noland lucky to have received diagnoses when they did it's definitely more aggressive to get where it got in six months But I'm very lucky it's not in my lymph nodes,” she said She was familiar with much of the process she would be facing “Noland has actually been very supportive with me,” Melissa said “His first words to me when he found out were She began photopheresis treatments to boost her immune system in March Noland goes to the doctor in Washington for refills once a month and takes pills twice a day Both visit their doctors quarterly for thorough exams they were starting him back on treatment and getting me started We had to be both places in one day,” Melissa said “His doctor knows what's going on with me and mine knows what is going on with him Noland pushes on and is doing well academically and socially He played on this year's Babe Ruth 14U state championship team Melissa is an active volunteer with local baseball organizations including Thurmont and Frederick County Babe Ruth Baseball leagues and covers herself with sunblock and sunglasses due to photosensitivity While she was unable to maintain her full-time position she works part-time for a real estate company in Frederick Sometime my body reminds me that I need to take it easy,” she said Finding balance for her family is important to Melissa “We try to keep life as normal as possible.” “He still had things he had to do and still got in trouble just like other little kids,” she said “That helped him grow up to be who he is now.” “He may have to continue treatment for the rest of his life “He just started again in May and will continue it for two years with an MRI every three months She is hopeful for FDA approval of other options that might help him Meeting other families with similar struggles has been the best encouragement for Melissa “I think it helps to know that other people are going through it Sometimes all people need to know is that they are not the only one going through things,” she said The Kinnas have a website sharing their story at KinnaStrong.com CONTACT: Find Kinna Family Car Show or The Chamber on Facebook (Note: Truitt Kinna has been a high school basketball coach for more than a quarter-century including the last six seasons with the Simms High girls’ program having recently announced plans to step down after leading the Tiger girls to a second consecutive 19-4 campaign is a physical education and social studies instructor at Sun River Valley School in Simms Scott Mansch caught up with him this week for our Sunday Conversation.) Or can I not call you ‘Coach’ anymore Q: Congratulations on your long coaching career 26 as a head coach and 30 years as a coach … My parents are in their 80s and they weren’t able to get up for a single game this year So I really didn’t get to see them during the season this year And for 23 of the years (when he was a coach) I was single And now I’m married to Vickie (laughs) So I’d like to have some more time to do some other things And let some one else try (coaching) for a while Q: So are you telling me Vickie doesn’t like basketball But I think there’s some other things out there in the world that we can do now I think you were coaching the Simms girls the last six years then there were 11 years when I was both the boys’ and girls’ coach in Augusta I was also at Simms coaching the boys for six years for my first year and a half as a girls’ head coach along with being a boys’ assistant for four years We left when I was going to be a sophomore and I graduated from Wolf Point in 1984 I know Wolf Point had some fine athletes in those days A: When I was a junior in basketball we won the (District 2B) conference and made it the divisional championship We got beat and then were challenged to get to state by Miles City Sacred Heart They had a kid with the last name “Super,” and he had patent leather shoes and was pretty good (laughs) Q: Were you also a football player in high school Q: Did you go on and play college basketball I ran a little track at Northern (now Montana State-Northern in Havre) Q: Are your folks originally from the Manhattan area A: They actually both graduated from Simms So their (graduation) pictures are on the wall in the hallway and so the pictures of my grandpa and grandma Q: So everyone who graduates gets their picture on the wall at Simms High Q: I didn’t realize your roots run that deep out in the Sun River Valley there’s a street by the school named “Kinna” but it’s not named after me (laughs) That would be named after my great-grandfather A: There was John Kinna and Clarence John Kinna A: They ran the Simms Mercantile and the Fort Shaw Mercantile My great-great grandfather (also named John Kinna) he was the first mayor of the city of Helena He had Vigilante meetings to try to catch the (Henry) Plummer gang One son of his came in this direction and opened up a store in Simms So there’s lots of history for our family here in Simms Q: And I’ll bet every time you coach a Simms team it has special meaning have you thought this retirement thing through when I first got to Great Falls in the mid-1980s I remember Wolf Point had some excellent football teams and recall going to Choteau to watch a football playoff game I think that was when the Durocher boys were playing for Choteau and I transferred from Northern to Montana State and watched Rob play football and then my first teaching job was back there Q: I’m sure you’re very familiar with the Wild Horse Stampede in Wolf Point It was also something to look forward to in the summer I’ve heard the Wild Horse Stampede is one of the wildest times in the Montana rodeo scene It’ll compare with the old days of the Augusta Rodeo Q: What are some of your top memories as a basketball coach A: The best girls’ team I had got third at the Northern C divisional We ended our season with a win but couldn’t challenge and couldn’t move on to State and I can remember those very well. The boys were in Augusta Q: You probably had JC Isakson playing for you there Now he’s an assistant coach at (University of Providence) Q: Who were some of the best players you coached And then girls-wise in Augusta I had Michaela Howe-Cobb who was the leading shot-blocker in the state of Montana and went on to play at Northern And then here in Simms I had Kaitlyn Smith and Hollee Meek Q: I met those Willekes girls at last year’s district tournament Q: So the Simms girls are going to be OK next season I don’t think the cupboard’s bare Janessa has been an All-Stater for two years Q: Those Northern C tournaments are always fun If you just get to the Northern C you have a chance Back in the day when Roy Lackner (at Big Sandy) had a great team he aced me out of going to state by one point One year Roy-Winifred was undefeated … The competition at that thing is just amazing how did you deal with the roller coaster of a profession Q: Was it hard coaching the girls and boys at the same time I know you did that for several years in Augusta A: (laughs) When you’d have a girls’ game and have a two-point loss and then have to go and prep your boys for an upcoming game before you walked through the door you kind of had to catch your breath and shake it off a little bit the plays and the offense all stayed the same for the most part with the boys and girls I always believed it never mattered who you were playing It doesn’t matter if (the opponent) is undefeated Q: Any idea how many games you won or how many you coached overall The wins don't exceed the losses (laughs) when you coach that many years and that many teams at small schools it’s not always easy (The well-liked Sunburst native and longtime coach died two years ago) (pauses) I remember the first time I had to coach against him He came walking into the gym in Augusta wearing that old baseball coat he always wore I’m Truitt,’ and he said ‘I know who you are.’ (laughs) Griff and (the late) Charlie Robinson were great mentors of mine Tom Granbois in Wolf Point was my main mentor Lots of memories and lots of good memories how in the heck do you get that first name of yours A: (laughs) Here’s some more history for you I was actually named after a guy named Truitt Spangler The funny thing about that is he used to be the superintendent in Simms years ago So I look up as I’m walking by and it says ‘Truitt.’ (laughs) In my family there’s a Bob I said to my folks ‘How in the world did you come up with that?’ And Dad said ‘I always liked his name when he was our superintendent.’ So you’ve got all these relatives and your namesake up on the Simms High wall maybe you’ll be back coaching one day Scott Mansch’s Sunday Conversations appear frequently. latest automation technologies – involving a long-standing and close cooperation with TMAS member ACG Kinna – has ensured family-owned Värnamo Sängkläder AB has retained its leading position in the production of high-quality bedding against heavy odds At the recent Heimtextil exhibition held in Frankfurt Martin Åhlander – the third generation CEO of Värnamo which has specialised in high quality Nordic bedding since its foundation in 1951 – explained that his company is now the only producer of pillows mattress protectors and quilts with manufacturing remaining in Sweden our competition from Asia got very intense as companies over there started exporting bedding products of very high quality at much lower prices than we could possibly produce conventionally in such a high-cost country as Sweden,” he said “Our solution was investment in the latest automated technologies enabling us to be both flexible and to respond very quickly to the needs of our customers while cutting costs This has proved to be a winning approach.” Värnamo first started collaborating with ACG Kinna in the 1980s initially with the installation of automated overlock stitching units for quilt production followed by further moves such as bringing in-house polyester ball fibre filling technology into its plant with Nowo filling machines Värnamo became one of the very first companies to install an ACG Kinna robotic pillow line this line configuration enables the completely seamless fibre handling “We needed big volumes to enable such an installation and they were forthcoming,” Åhlander said “We are now producing and supplying eight times more pillows than we did before the installation so we’re pretty happy about this decision.” “Since the Covid-19 pandemic there have also been increasing problems with the logistics and cost of international shipping leading to very long lead times for products from Asia on occasions which has worked in our favour too,” added Martin’s mother and Värnamo’s sales manager Berit Åhlander Nilsson Nowo – a long-established name in fibre filling technologies – became part of ACG Kinna at the end of 2021 and most recently Swedish developer of machine vision solutions for manufacturing warehouse and factory automation has also joined the company and robot guidance and is further enabling us to fulfil our promise of ‘complete process – one supplier,” explained ACG Kinna marketing and sales manager Tomas Aspenskog.  “We now provide complete customised automation for the entire production chain – from the opening and weighing of the fibre to the packaging of the final products each customer’s needs are individually covered eliminating the headaches that arise from trying to coordinate multiple suppliers during a new installation Värnamo is the flagship showroom for our automation capabilities and because they are so close to us we often take other potential customers on visits to them in order to fully demonstrate what is possible.” “Our relationship with ACG Kinna is beneficial to both companies and we’re constantly exchanging ideas on both new process and technology improvements,” concluded Martin Åhlander “ACG Kinna had a very successful Heimtextil 2024 which is developing further technologies for home textiles with the emphasis on fully automated and highly integrated production lines,” said TMAS Secretary General Therese Premler-Andersson “These technologies enable significant resource savings to be achieved while making production in high-cost countries once more profitable Cost effective manufacturing closer to the customer is also more sustainable while enabling companies like Värnamo to change their cost structures but also increase their capacities and flexibility.” This is a question recently asked by the republican political theorist Philip Pettit argue that the modern nation-state and the institution of private property are antithetical to freedom these are historic injustices that are structurally dominating you must reject both as inimical to realising this freedom by a line of thinking most vocally articulated by Pettit I’m free to the degree that I am not arbitrarily dominated by any other I am not free if someone can arbitrarily interfere in the execution of my choices If I consent to a system of rules or procedures anyone that then invokes these rules against me cannot be said to be curtailing my freedom from domination but since I have consented to the rules that now curtail my freedom that I have a drinking problem and I’ve asked my best friend to keep me away from the bar If she sees me heading in that direction and prevents me from getting anywhere near the alcohol so my status as a free person is not affected Republican theory diverges from liberal theory because the latter treats any interference in my actions as a constraint on my freedom – especially if I paid good money for the drink Neither republicans nor liberals suggest that private property and the state might themselves be detrimental to freedom private property is the bedrock of individual rights property ownership is legitimate as long as it is non-dominating Republicans further argue that a state that tracks your interests and encourages deliberative contestation and active political participation will do best by your freedom But why should we assume that property or the state is central to securing freedom as non-domination the state is like the laws of physics while private property is akin to gravity these two institutions are just background conditions we simply have to deal with While anarchists don’t disagree that property and the state exist they seek to defend a conception of freedom as non-domination that factors in their dominating was perfectly consistent with slavery and needed the state to enforce that state of affairs The abolition of slavery and the emergence of industrial capitalism were predicated on the extension of the principle of private property to the propertyless who were encouraged to see themselves as self-possessors who could sell their labour on the open market at the market rate in Europe millions of emancipated serfs were lured into land settlements that left them permanently indebted to landlords and state functionaries They were barely able to meet taxes and rents and frequently faced starvation The anarchists uniformly denounced this process as the transformation of slavery They deployed synonyms like “wage slavery” to describe the new state of affairs they extended their conception of domination by analysing sex slavery and marriage slavery Proudhon’s twin dictums “property is theft” and “slavery is murder” should be understood in this context neither would have been possible but for the republican state enforcing and upholding the capitalist property regime while property owners were dependent on the state to keep recalcitrant populations at bay workers were dependent on the state for welfare and social security because of the poverty-level wages paid by capitalists As Karl Polanyi noted there was nothing natural about this process had to be enforced and continues to be across the world Republicans might encourage us to think of the state and property like the laws of physics or gravity because this helps them argue that their conception of freedom as non-domination is not moralised – that is their conception of freedom as non-domination does not depend on a prior ethical commitment to anything else it appears that republican freedom is in fact deeply moralised – the state and private property remain central to the possibility of republican freedom in an a priori way Republican accounts of freedom demand we ignore a prior ethical commitment to two institutions that should themselves be rejected Anarchists argue that private property and the state precipitate structures of domination that position people in hierarchical relations of domination, which are often if not always exacerbated by distinctions of race, gender and sexuality. These are what Uri Gordon calls the multiple “regimes of domination” that structure our lives Anarchists are anarchists to the extent that they actively combat these forces the answer is through a specific form of communal empowerment (“power with” rather than “power over”) This would produce structural power egalitarianism a situation in which no one can arbitrarily dominate another Would a reciprocal powers politics not simply result in the very social conflicts that anarchists see structuring society already Perhaps anarchists could replace engagement with the state with radical practices of decision-making The problem is that anarchists haven’t even defined the requisite constituencies or how they should relate to one another What if my mass constituency’s democratic voice conflicts with yours There is one implement in the republican tool box that anarchists once took very seriously and which might be resurrected: constitutionalism Without a state to fall back on or private property to lean on anarchists like Proudhon devised radically anti-hierarchical and impressively imaginative constitutional forms You can read other articles in the series here A Maple Ridge woman who has had a tremendous career in lacrosse is being considered for a provincial honour Megan Kinna is on the list as Sport BC recently announced the finalists who will be celebrated at the upcoming 56th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards “I feel very honoured and very grateful to have been selected to be nominated,” she said She is one of three people who will be considered for senior female athlete of the year and was a member of the 2015 Under-19 Canadian team that captured gold in the FIL Rathbones World Championships in Scotland She played with the senior women in June 2022 when they took silver in the Lacrosse Women’s World Cup in Towson In July that year she again wore the Maple Leaf at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham Kinna is in the process of trying to make Team Canada again the list will be cut down to 50 by the end of this month and 23 of those will be selected to play for Canada at the 2024 World Championships in Utica READ ALSO: Kinna part of historic win Kinna had an impressive college career on a scholarship with the NCAA’s Northeastern University Wildcats For her four-year career she played 72 games scoring 61 goals and 33 assists for 94 points She competed in two final four tournaments and won the Big Ten Tournament in 2019 playing in the women’s Arena Lacrosse League in 2023 Kinna had 15 goals and 29 points in six games and in 2024 she has 11 goal and 14 points in three games She’s enjoying playing in the new Womens ALL “There’s a lot of really great players in the league,” she said Kinna got into coaching and led the U-15 Maple Ridge Burrards girls team to a provincial championship in her first year on the sideline Now she’s running her own business called Kinna’s Crew where she helps develop players who are hoping to get a coveted NCAA field lacrosse scholarship and even a woman in her 40s who is hoping to make Team England “There’s a lot of finer nuances to go over and I love sharing what I’ve learned over the years,” she said The March awards will be hosted by CBC’s Scott Russell and they recognize the province’s best in amateur sport and officials for outstanding performances in their sport in the 2023 season “The Athlete of the Year Awards is a true celebration of sport in our province The finalists… will be honoured at the event and represent exceptional efforts and accomplishments in 2023 We congratulate our finalists and the organizations they represent,” said Sport BC’s president and CEO Rob Newman Each finalist was nominated by their provincial or multi-sport organization included a diverse group of highly experienced B.C An additional six awards will be presented at the ceremony Daryl Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award and In Her Footsteps Honourees and the Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award recipient READ ALSO: Ridge Meadows Flames entering spring hockey league Dialogue and debate are integral to a free society and we welcome and encourage you to share your views on the issues of the day.
