colleagues from both Södertälje and Kista will move to the KTH campus
and this will mean shake-ups in several places
Sing-sing and parts of the machine quarter are now being refurbished to meet the needs and requirements of the tenants for the work environment
“The premises in Sing-Sing did not fulfil the requirements of a modern working environment for flexible working,” says Gunnar Malm
“We look forward to letting the employees move in after the summer
but there is a lot that needs to be done before then.”
Sing-Sing is a K-marked building from 1948 that in recent years has mainly housed the ITM school's departments
With its red staircase railings and glassed-in offices
if you ask the older students who came up with the nickname
The building is popular for events such as the President’s Professors' Breakfasts and conference meetings
But when Gunnar Malm and colleagues from the Kista campus examined their future premises
they went through the premises to find the right measures according to today's building standards for acoustics
all video meetings require better sound insulation – a need that did not exist when the offices were built
the department that is moving in has also realised that the kitchen will be a central meeting place
Akademiska hus will begin the renovation work
which in time will also benefit other staff in the building
Changes will also take place in the Machine Quarter within the Department of Product Development (IPU)
the office space is being prepared to accommodate some thirty employees from Södertälje
all researchers and teachers in the production area will be gathered in one building
“One advantage of the move is that we can create a unified education and research environment with a strong experimental environment for the production area,” says Magnus Wiktorsson
we think that the standard of classrooms and offices is much more outdated on the KTH campus than what we are used to in Södertälje
they have developed different types of offices where people can share rooms
Space is also being made for smaller meetings digitally or one-on-one
Together with the departments of Learning in Engineering Sciences
which also recently moved in to the building
they have ensured that all doors have windows to increase the amount of light
Acoustic measurements and ventilation tests are also being carried out to check the working environment
Classrooms and study areas at Brinellvägen 68 will also be renewed with new furniture and technology from Södertälje
The starting point has been to reuse Södertälje's and Kista's modern furniture and technology as much as possible and now that the inventory is complete
it remains to be decided where to place the surplus equipment
there are empty spaces that could be furnished for students
Magnus adds that much of the fine furniture from Södertälje will not be used at the ITM school and needs to circulate to others at KTH
The Sustainability Office and the Real Estate Department have been close partners throughout the process and a Premises Council (Lokalråd)
has analyzed the consequences for all relocations from different perspectives
“There will be a lot of shuffling around on several parts of the KTH campus
Several relocations have already begun and now adaptations are also being prepared to make space for new computer rooms”
programme coordinator for the campus moves
“The campus relocations result in a lot of adaptations to premises and it has been noted that the maintenance of the properties is neglected in some places
We now have the opportunity to make demands on Akademiska hus to refresh worn premises.”

What are the main objectives of the 2025 Business Plan
The most important goals and thus assignments in 2025 are reviewing the School's organisation in departments and divisions and moving from KTH Kista to KTH Campus
We have begun work on what the president calls balanced finances
and things are moving in the right direction
but the work will continue in 2025 and probably also in 2026
The move from Kista to KTH Campus is a significant change
How do you ensure that it is implemented smoothly and that staff and students are affected as little as possible
The heads of schools involved in campus moves are part of different groups supporting the processes
premises provision and placement on the KTH Campus are discussed in the Premises advisory committee
I can facilitate and help solve knots that arise along the way
the resources for implementing the move have been reviewed and increased
it is essential to inform and be transparent about what is happening and the next steps
and provides updates at each staff meeting on the progress of the work
EECS is conducting a review of its education offer
What changes can students and teachers expect
It should be noted that changes to the programme offer certain lead times
for students beginning 3-year engineering programme in the School's subject areas
EECS is now admitting students to two 3-year engineering programmes instead of three
and there is an increased focus on clear specialisation tracks within the programmes
Another exciting example of change visible to students starting this autumn is the School's master's programme in embedded systems and nanotechnology
A change has been initiated towards an increased focus on semiconductor technology
which is visible in a further developed course offering and specialisation tracks in the programmes
Part of the educational offer is lifelong learning
EECS has a good mix of grant-funded continuing professional development (FoV) and contract education
and we have the ambition to continue developing this combination
Contract education has the advantages of being needs-driven in nature and financially viable
The School's grant-funded education has been broadened in recent years
we will await the investigation into lifelong learning at KTH
which the Faculty Council recently initiated
This includes analysing needs and target groups and assessing educational formats and provisions
It will provide the school with essential guidance for the further development of lifelong learning
The EECS Research and Impact Day is a new initiative that started in 2024
and how will it strengthen the school's research
The day aims to inspire researchers at the school to talk about their research
share results and get to know each other's research environments
Focusing on content and our core research activities is my primary focus in my role in the school's management
How do you see the future research endeavours of EECS
and which areas do you think will be most strategically important
The research groups in our different departments
strategic research infrastructure and the commitment of our researchers form the basis of research today and in the future
We live in a troubled world where research is given an even more vital role to provide stability and solutions for the future
Knowledge becomes even more important in difficult times
and universities have an increasingly strategic role in advancing knowledge through research
We need to continue developing research to solve key strategic issues
investments in 6G and applications in extreme environments such as space
as well as in rapid development in life science
It is strategically vital to increase research cooperation within Europe and join forces
I want to focus on how we can develop opportunities to support research funding from the EU at KTH and in Sweden
How does EECS work with a transparent and inclusive promotion process within the faculty
and the assessment criteria are open in the employment regulations
The system is based on the person's merits about these assessment criteria
The career committee has proposed changing the promotion of professors from being based on the need to being a right to be assessed
The dean has also appointed a working group to review the assessment criteria in the employment regulations
Ragnar Thobaben and I are part of the working group
I think it can contribute to increased clarity
all levels are included by the person who wants to be promoted
making a self-assessment based on the assessment criteria
The departmental management then assesses this self-evaluation
The Employment Committee will prepare cases for Head of School decisions in the future
We do not know precisely what the whole process will look like
What are the biggest challenges in faculty recruitment
and we are trying to address it through the government capital initiatives currently being discussed in departments
Another challenge is internally funded positions
Several departments do not have the funds to offer start-up grants for new hires
The Faculty Board and the school management will have an internal meeting to discuss recruitment strategies
we hope to have a long-term plan for future recruitment
but it will not be possible or even desirable to plan all appointments - we live in a very dynamic world regarding our subjects
A smaller challenge is to adapt to the new guidelines and to be able to manage the processes as smoothly as possible - thanks to our competent administrators; we will be able to be more efficient.
How are you working to ensure that staff perceives these changes as positive
The current departmental level will become the institutional level
This will allow us to build on the current organisation's strengths and strengthen the organisation
the organisation is affected by the move from KTH Kista to KTH Campus
which creates challenges and opportunities
This means that massive changes are taking place for some groups and individuals
and you will be closer to your head of department.
We had an internal meeting with head of department
and the school management to capture as many perspectives as possible
We work with this material and provide continuous feedback to the School's extended management team (heads of department and heads of division)
We are also transparent with all the material we produce and are happy to come out and talk with any organisation that wants to meet us
The introduction of a new institutional structure in 2026 means significant changes
and how will it affect the School's activities
The new institutional structure aims to create a more efficient and coherent organisation by giving departments full responsibility for teaching
The change will reduce the distance between management and staff
We are also seeking to introduce a transparent and straightforward allocation of resources
this means a clearer division of responsibilities and better support for managers
where collaboration and flexibility will be key factors in meeting future challenges
Internal communication has been identified as an area for improvement
What measures are you planning to take to improve the flow of information within the School
We have established regular occasions where members of the Faculty Board are invited to dialogue meetings with teachers and researchers at the school
The format of the school's working meetings has also been developed by making them available in English
we need to find more ways for continuous dialogue
not least with all the school's doctoral students
and to increase participation in the school's workplace meetings
The ongoing reorganisation can catalyse change and improvement of internal communication
but there is much to be done before we are there
EECS is introducing institutional support with new administrative roles
EECS has established a new administrative position as a management coordinator
we will recruit three more to staff the new departments that will come into effect on 1 January 2026
These aim to hold together the internal support in each department and act as the head of the department's administrative gateway to the overall operational support
Be a coordinating function in the same way that Marianne Lundin and I are to the school management.

is the headquarters of ABB's L&W business unit
which manufactures equipment for quality testing
process measurement and optimization for the pulp and paper industry
approximately half of the global workforce supporting L&W products is located in Kista
The renovation of the existing L&W manufacturing site includes updating both the office landscape and production environment
employees who were previously based in ABB's Knarrarnäsgatan facility have moved to Viderögatan
which has been the home office of the acquired Lorentzen & Wettre business – the pioneers of the L&W product line – since 1977
These employees represent most of ABB’s other Business Areas including electrification
"The investment has enabled us to increase our production volume by 30 percent
We see a constant increase in demand for products and solutions that enable a fully automated
optimized and connected production process for our customers," said Per Sandström
head of ABB in Kista and L&W Business Unit Manager
"By gathering all ABB employees in the Stockholm region under one roof
we can more easily collaborate and facilitate our customers' transition to sustainable operations."
The premises have been adapted to a modern and flexible way of working as well as for continued expansion of the business
Due to its easily accessible location just outside of the Stockholm city center
conferences and training sessions are frequently arranged
and we see a need for a number of different roles - from salespeople
engineers and project managers to employees in service and production
Our experts are crucial in helping the industry achieve the highest quality standards
reduce energy consumption and minimize downtime," said Sandström

The purpose of Järvaveckan is to bridge the gap between citizens
The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) was one of 375 participating organisations in 2024
We had a quick chat with DSV researcher Luis Quintero who planned and participated in the event
“Being part of Järvaveckan was an interesting experience
We got to share with kids and young people what we do at DSV related to immersive technologies
Four students from the Master’s Programme in Design for Creative and Immersive Technologies volunteered during four hours to showcase virtual reality applications to visitors
They taught people what the technology is about and let them play for a few minutes – either a videogame
or an application to make a drawing in the air rather than on a flat canvas.”
Shortly after opening we already had a queue of people wanting to try what we brought
The DSV students could engage with several young people who were finishing gymnasium and were looking for inspiration on what to study next
A couple of them took our contact info and I am convinced they will be studying either game design or virtual reality soon
I think that kind of inspiration was the main point of the activity.”
“We were sharing a tent with Kista Science City and several other organisations where people could experiment with the future’s technology
for example how to teach coding skills to children or perform chemistry experiments
The role of DSV was to showcase immersive technologies
which may become more important in the future to complement what people do with smartphones today
it is rewarding to participate in activities closer with society because we get to exercise our communication skills
we need to convey in simple terms why the things we do are important.”
I’m thinking about an adult who tried to draw in 3D but gave up after one minute saying: ‘I don’t understand what to do’
his daughter who was around 4 years old said: ‘I also want to try’
We didn’t let young children try because the devices are recommended from 12 years of age
we just held the headset to the girl’s eyes and gave her one controller
she scribbled something in 3D and said: ‘I drew an icecream!’
and it also showed first-hand how the young generation comes wired by default to interact with technology – even if it’s completely unknown and different from smartphones”

Interxion and Advania Data Centers will all build at the energy efficient campus at Kista
Three data center operators are constructing new facilities on the campus run by Stockholm Data Parks at Kista
they will supply enough waste heat for 35,000 modern residential apartments in Stockholm
IP-Only, Interxion and Advania Data Centers are building data centers on the Kista site, which is connected to Stockholm's district heating system so tenants get paid for their waste heat, which is used to warm local homes and businesses. Kista was Stockholm Data Parks' first campus opening in 2017
as well as one brownfield property (Vanda 1)
which is located next to an existing Interxion data center
they have a data center there in the park and are already delivering heat and expanding their business in Kista," said Erik Rylander
head of Stockholm Data Parks at its parent group Stockholm Exergi
"Whereas Advania and IP-Only are investing in their first data center in this area.”
Earlier this year, at DCD>Energy Smart, Stockholm Data Parks announced another campus at Brista
five miles (8km) west of Stockholm Arlanda Airport
bringing 220,000 square meters of property space and 20MW of power available for data center investments with heat recovery
The organization has two other sites lined up
which both have heat recovery already available or in preparation
Data centers are part of the Swedish capital's plans to become fossil free by 2040
Data centers at Stockholm Data Parks are paid for their excess heat
and contribute to the elimination of fossil fuels from Stockholm Exergi’s heat production for the city’s households and offices
“There is an increasing realization that end-users are expecting data centers to offer sustainable solutions," said Rylander
“With our willingness to pay for excess heat
locating in Stockholm is not only more profitable
it also provides a competitive edge for these data centers in responding to customer demands for climate-neutral computing,” Rylander added
Interxion is due to be merged with Digital Realty according to a deal announced last month

Editor’s Note: This entry is the first in a series of interviews conducted by Cluster in collaboration with Living Labs Global (LLG) in occasion of the second edition of the Living Labs Global Award
an international technology award for digital services that add high value to users in cities around the world
8 global cities partnered with LLG to search for solutions to their most pressing local problems in a global context
at Electrum Foundation and Kista Science City about Stockholm’s commitment to innovation in mobility and its effort to find best solutions in the field
Kista Science City is the most important ICT cluster in northern Europe
a hotspot for Information and Comminication Technology (ICT) where business and academia join forces to form one of the world’s foremost business regions for ICT
Nokia and IBM have established business centres in Kista
Marcia Caines: Please tell us a little about Kista Science City and why ‘Intelligent Transport Solutions’ are core to its development
Stockholm has been able to meet growth challenges by exploiting new land areas and through densification while successfully developing the transportation system to cope with growing needs
a few years ago we had critical levels of cars travelling into the downtown area on the main routes as the new ITS industry developed
Since Stockholm is known as a city with extremely high internet penetration where everyone had early access to cell phones
and since it has a very large internationally recognized IT industry that is intensively engaged in research
it was natural to direct interest to this area
and Stockholm Public Transport began collaborating in 2000 on a common vision for traffic solutions using IT and telecom
and by mid-decade a common portal for traffic information was available: www.trafiken.nu
and academic communication platform whose mission is to create forums for regional players
As an ICT cluster with more than 1,000 companies and strong growth
we believe that a new ITS focus area can contribute greatly to developing Stockholm’s transportation system while generating new innovations and promoting new export solutions
To create the best possible environment for such development
we are now working to create a national testbed for innovative new services
and we found that Living Labs Global (LLG) is a fantastic partner with which to strengthen that development
LLG shares our view that transparency is crucial in order for cities to learn from each other and for innovations to be shared by many in a global market
MC: Over the years the city of Stockholm has earned recognition for its persistent commitment to the environment and improving the quality of life
It has set very high standards and adopted ambitious goals
among them that of becoming a Carbon emission free city by 2050
In 2010 the European Union chose Stockholm as the first European city to be nominated ‘Green Capital’
and city dwellers and stakeholders worldwide envy the ‘Stockholm approach’ to integrated urban management and energy efficiency
What are you doing to replicate your successes and how do you share knowledge with other cities across the EU and the rest of the world
you have to dare to stand out yet remain humble
Daring to say that you’re a world leader means that you have to focus on your efforts but that you will also be critically scrutinized
It’s important for Stockholm to participate in the global debate on our future
Since we are also confident that we have important things to say and present
Federico De Giuli: Urban transportation systems are very complex
and rely on combined – but very specific – policies
I would like to understand what Kista Science City expects from the project entries from this point of view
the more reasons to try developing them using new technologies
It’s all about finding new ways to provide users with better information that helps support decision-making
It’s about purposefully turning away from dependence on fossil fuels
It’s about creating a transportation system without injuries or deaths
With the combined forces of science and industry and with the city as an experimental field
Kista Science City has all the makings for finding solutions that help create an efficient transportation system for smart cities
FDG: Does Stockholm aim to become a car-free city one day
and current arguments for a car-free city will be dispelled by technological developments
Fail-safe vehicles powered by renewable energy will eventually lead to the car no longer being harmful to either humans or the environment
the challenge will continue to be developing a city based on accessibility
where the focus will be on finding new ways to get traffic flowing smoothly – always and everywhere
This is done by integrating all parts of the transportation system while offering opportunities for everyone to always choose the right solution for their transportation needs
This gives individuals the opportunity to choose the best solution and also offers the community an unprecedented opportunity to optimize transportation solutions
I believe very strongly that many trips will simply not be made because the alternatives are as good or even better
MC: Stockholm has been working hard towards clean transport for some years now
3 out of 4 citizens use public transport during rush hour and Stockholm’s inner city vehicles run of locally produced biomass fuels
A massive waste-management scheme run on renewable fuels is underway and the congestion charge implemented has improved the city’s air quality by 10 – 14%; what can new technologies and service innovation bring to the table that hasn’t already been done
we’ll have access to many more checkpoints related to an increasing number of objects
A not-so-distant vision is for all these data to be available for the development of services
And it’s only our imaginations that limit what services can be developed
FDG: Has the city of Stockholm had to make calculated investments in citizen education for lifestyle and behavior change to achieve its sustainability goals
AS: Stockholm has long had a highly educated population that is very aware of its ability to influence and sets high standards on public services
It also has a long tradition of separating waste and saving energy
and an autocratically large market share of public transportation
All this is combined with a high awareness of the world’s environmental challenges
making it very easy to work with citizens and businesses to drive the development of green solutions
MC: Stockholm imposes tough regulations in order to drive change
Have you experienced citizen resistance in any of your policies
Are all of the political parties in favour of these policies
AS: A very good example of this is the introduction of congestion charges through a referendum after a comprehensive pilot study
That Stockholm would choose a congestion charge solution was never given or obvious
but when the environmental debate gained momentum
the Stockholm congestion charge solution is a model that attracts numerous international visitors each year
FDG: Will Kista Science City take measures to face the challenges posed by citizen privacy in the flux and monitoring of data in intelligent transport solutions
open discussions on privacy issues in tandem with technological advancements – Stockholm is no exception
The things that make cities smart are density and proximity
which lead to positive effects like efficient use of energy
FDG: What is the role of the City Council of Stockholm in the transition to smart and greener techonologies
Who manages the finances of service innovation
AS: The City Council of Stockholm has adopted “Vision 2030”
with the goal of becoming one of the world’s cleanest
and where Stockholm is a world leader in information technology and the development
and application of new environmental and energy-related technologies
Stockholm has adopted a green IT strategy on all levels and in all operations
Green IT is a strategic and management issue
which is why it is important for environmental issues to be considered from an operational viewpoint
Doing so clarifies the ways in which the municipality can reduce its environmental impact across all operations
MC: Have you ever considered that technological mediation may have a negative affect of the human feel and/or social interaction of a city
AS: The things that make cities smart are density and proximity
Possible negative side effects is crowding and frictions in the transport system
The smart city is using the new technologies to be able to create even more dense cities and at the same time creating new solutions to avoid the negative side effects of crowding
The idea that technology can be used for the wrong purpose applies across the board and is not specific to cities
MC: Stockholm boasts of a Green ICT program
which connects households and businesses through an open ICT structure with an optical fiber cable
By 2012 90% of households in Stockholm will be connected through this optical fibre network; have you already witnessed the benefits of this innovation
and I believe that we can already see that the development of the digital infrastructure has led to a more sustainable society
Through more efficient ICT use and the continued development of both mobile and fixed networks
Ericsson predicts that total CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 20 percent
Services like video conferencing and new forms of communication – say social media – are already providing Stockholm-based companies with significant environmental benefits
which naturally results in financial benefits
FDG: Does the use and research of smart-tech favour the emergence of new commercial ventures and start-up enterprises in and around Stockholm
Will the Smart technology sector provide opportunities for entrepreneurship and strategic sustainable development
but surely new innovations will develop in this field
We have reached a point in the history of man where we suddenly are able to create growth and at the same time save the world with new technology solutions
MC: New city infrastructure is not uncomplicated business
especially in such vulnerable economic and environmental climate
how does a city build enough confidence to take meditated risks in unexplored fields
Does business competence play a significant role in facilitating cities in this sense
AS: What we usually call “The Swedish Model” is a close dialogue between government
Just one example: the world’s first ever complete mobile telephone system evolved through a intense collaboration between a monopole state owned telecom operator and the Ericsson company
Risks decrease significantly if they are shared and combined with the knowledge of different sectors
In the mid-80’s in Kista the Electrum Foundation was created as a “triple helix” motor of innovation and growth of the ICT sector
I am perfectly safe in stating that this body commonly steered by the City of Stockholm
the Royal Institute of Technology and the enterprises like Ericsson
IBM and the real estate and land developers of Kista is critical to the success of Kista Science City on the global market
FDG: How did you benefit from participating in the Living Labs Global Award 2010
AS: By opening up the city’s challenges to a global society of developers while being able to browse hundreds of innovations offers new and hopefully unexpected opportunities
and I am amazed by the forces gathering in the Living Labs Global community
MC: Does your participation in the Living Labs Global Award help Stockholm to activate the dynamic process of service innovation in the city
all activities and events of this kind force everyone to focus and keep pace
and it increases recognition of the strategies

After an initial consultation, the PEN-TEC team was commissioned to do a full-fledged treatment of the basement using PENETRON crystalline technology. They were given only two months to rehabilitate the entire space. The work began immediately and followed a clear sequence:
The PENETRON crystalline technology used in the Kista Galleria basement penetrated into the wet concrete substrates, the crystals responding to the moisture by growing into all cracks and capillaries throughout the structure and becoming an integral part of the concrete. After about two months, the basement space, now sealed against any further water ingress, was completely dry and – thanks to the PENETRON System – will remain dry over the life of the structure.
“There’s an added bonus that the PENETRON technology is NSF-61 certified and completely non-toxic, safe with no noxious gases or VOC emissions,” adds Moen. “We have treated numerous water storage facilities and other sensitive facilities across Northern Europe with great success.”
Today, Europe's most modern go-kart track (on 4,000 square meters) has the latest electric karts running laps at speeds up to 70kmh (45mph), while spectators enjoy the action from the adjacent bar.
“Even applied to the negative side of the concrete substrates, PENETRON crystalline technology has proven its effectiveness in situations identical to the waterlogged basement in Stockholm,” adds Robert Revera, President and CEO of The PENETRON Group. “We’re proud to be part of such success stories all across Scandinavia.”
One driver incurred 30 fines taking his child to the hospital for treatment before a judge’s ruling canceled the penalties
The meeting between Mike Waltz and Marcell Biró on April 16th is yet another sign of the close cooperation between the two governments
Sweden’s Cardinal Anders Arborelius dedicated the country’s first shrine Saturday specifically for prayer for persecuted Christians
The Archbishop of Stockholm presided at the ceremony July 22 at the Holy Martyrs Syriac Catholic Church in Kista
was marked by a Syriac Catholic Eucharistic liturgy attended by hundreds of people
including members of the Syriac Orthodox Church
which belongs to the Oriental Orthodox communion
and Dominican Sisters originally from Iraq
In a homily delivered in both Swedish and English
Arborelius said that Western Christians needed the witness of the persecuted as they faced the challenges of growing secularism
He urged Catholics in Sweden—a country believed to be home to more than 120,000 Middle Eastern Christians—to pray to Mary
especially that their young people would resist the lure of secularization
The new shrines to Mary, Mother of the Persecuted, are cropping up across the world thanks to Fr. Benedict Kiely, an English priest who founded the charity Nasarean.org in 2016 to help Middle Eastern Christians remain in their home countries through “mini micro-financing” enabling them to set up small businesses
The Holy Martyrs Syriac Catholic Church, also known as the Akalla Church
hosts what is believed to be the world’s fourth shrine explicitly intended for prayer for Christians facing active persecution around the world
According to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2023
one in seven Christians worldwide faces persecution and more than 5,600 Christians were killed for reasons related to their faith last year
The icons of Mary, Mother of the Persecuted, are painted by Sr. Souraya, a Syrian nun of the Basilian order whose studio outside of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, was rebuilt with help from Nasarean.org.
Kiely told The Pillar in a July 23 email interview that the icons are offered to diocesan bishops for no charge
He stressed that the local ordinary’s support was essential for the establishment of new shrines as their backing demonstrates their commitment to prayer for persecuted Christians
He said that he had been struck by the “very lukewarm response from many bishops in the U.S.” to the offer
Kiely highlighted a 2020 survey conducted by Aid to the Church in Need-USA
which found that the persecution of Christians came last when respondents were asked to rank which global issues they were most concerned about
“This makes these shrines ever more urgent,” Kiely said.
The 60-year-old priest explained that the shrines had a twofold purpose: To offer a focus for people praying for persecuted Christians in Africa
and to give Western Christians a place to pray for fortitude and strength amid rising intolerance
He has previously acknowledged that there are other churches where Catholics remember Christians who have suffered for the faith, such as San Bartolomeo all’Isola in Rome
But he contends that these sites are not shrines specifically for prayer for persecuted Christians today
Kiely suggested that anti-Christian persecution did not feature prominently in the global synodal process leading into this October’s synod on synodality in Rome
while thousands of Christians are being martyred throughout the world
is a reason why these shrines are so important—to try to focus Western Christians on the plight of their brethren,” he said.
“There ought to be a synod on the worldwide persecution of Christians.”

The city of Stockholm has designated a large parcel of land for data center development
connectivity and some interesting cooling options
The Stockholm Data Parks initiative was launched in cooperation with infrastructure companies Fortum Värme
will enable data center operators to sell their waste heat to the grid and buy cooling as a service
the scheme will be expanded to another three locations – Brista
“With the significant synergies between recovered data center heat and the city’s environmental objective to become fossil fuel-free by 2040
I am determined to make Stockholm a major hub for sustainable data centers,” said Karin Wanngård
The announcement follows the news that Sweden has cut tax on electricity used in data centers by 97 percent
Stockholm Data Parks was established to attract investment and promote the Swedish capital as one of the best places in the world to run a data center
Stockholm aims to supply 10 percent of the city’s residential heating demand through recovered excess heat from data centers
The first site to be launched as part of this initiative is located in Kista and offers a mix of greenfield and brownfield sites available for sale or lease
Its tenants will be able to take advantage of recently lowered energy prices
Tax cuts have reduced the total cost of electricity used by data centers in Sweden by approximately 40 percent
resulting in cheapest power in Europe - less than €0.04 per kilowatt-hour
It is also worth noting that just 2 percent of Swedish electricity is derived from fossil fuels – the rest is provided by hydroelectric dams
Making the proposition even more attractive is the option to get paid for waste server heat
a data center load of 10 MW can heat close to 20,000 residential flats
Businesses that have already signed up for waste heat recovery in Stockholm include Interxion
Waste heat reuse has a reputation for being complicated: it requires a considerable upfront investment and is only available in geographic locations already served by a district heating system
Stockholm Data Parks has proposed an innovative model: utility providers will offer cooling of the facility for free in exchange for the excess heat when the data center load reaches above 10 MW
operator of Stockholm’s district heating system Fortum Värme will pay for the heat pumps necessary to concentrate thermal energy – usually the most expensive component of a waste heat recapture system
data center operators can simply sell their waste heat to Fortum Värme and take care of the cooling themselves
“With a market of more than 80 million people within a roundtrip delay of 30 milliseconds
covering all major cities of Northern Europe
Stockholm is an ideal location for cloud players and other major data center actors,” said Göran Långsved

the University Board decided to move the Kista campus
the project manager for the campus relocation
”Together with the Student Union of the School of Engineering (THS)
a timetable has been created for when programmes will be moved from Kista
It will run over two academic years until all students study at the KTH Campus at Valhallavägen.”
”We are looking at the contract structure for our premises in Kista
We will need to use the premises more efficiently during the relocation period
including research space and operational support.”
”Teachers and directors of studies will be involved in an intensive schedule work for 2025 when the first groups of students are moving to KTH Campus
Flexible workplaces have been prepared on KTH Campus to make it work for people who move between two places
and there will be separate information on that.”
but you are welcome to use the flexible workplaces prepared on KTH Campus en.”
”The relocation of the Kista campus will require negotiations with other schools to find the most suitable premises
We will also be looking at the organization of the school in parallel; whether this will affect placement after the move is too early to say.”
”It's too early to say because we must decide what happens to the Electrum Laboratory.”
we can't make the best use of the premises on Valhallavägen
and that's the potential biggest cost reduction.”
there has been a positive dialogue now that the move is becoming more concrete.”
”We have planned the most important activity with THS
we are now working on getting clear information at the departmental level
the most significant risk is that a move will interfere with teaching
and they want to try to synchronize with the term times
Doctoral students wish their studies not to be extended
and researchers see individual advantages and disadvantages.”
we want to emphasize that those working in Kista today will continue to receive good support until the move is completed.”
”The most significant part is the budgeting of the move itself
and how will the cost be divided at different levels at KTH.”
“The President will set up a study for the Electrum Laboratory to be carried out in the spring.”
”The cooperation between the three project managers at the EECS
and we are trying to make the right priorities
I want more time to talk to more people in the organization and get their wishes
but there are many good thoughts and ideas to capture
I am also available by email and for personal contact.”
Ericsson and Telia conducted outdoor trials of 5G technology in Sweden that the vendor said boosts the pair’s goal of launching 5G-like services in Sweden and Estonia in 2018
The demonstrations of 5G capabilities utilised 800 MHz of spectrum in the 15 GHz band, and were conducted on a live network in Kista. In a statement announcing the trial
Ericsson said the partners achieved peak data rates of 15 Gbps -- some 40 times faster than the maximum speeds that can be reached using 4G technology -- and latency of under 3 milliseconds
Telia and Ericsson announced in January that they aim to deliver the first 5G experiences to subscribers in Stockholm and Tallinn in 2018
The services will be delivered on a pre-commercial 5G network
following joint development and testing of 5G use-cases covering communications and Internet of Things (IoT)
said the Kista demonstration is one of the first steps towards standardising and developing 5G technology
“Our knowledge and learnings from testing in a real outdoor environment will be crucial to understand and develop the 5G technology and networks needed to meet our customers’ future requirements," he said
In a related Telia statement
Svärdh said the low latency achieved in the Kista test was a key development
“We experience some difficulties in delivering really short latencies
They are important because you need to have short latencies in order to fully support services such as virtual reality
The company said the sub-3 millisecond latency achieved in the trial was a “massive improvement” on current rates
Ericsson’s head of region Northern Europe and Central Asia
echoed Svärdh’s comments regarding the importance of the recent trial to the partners’ long-term goals
“Our 5G roadmap will incrementally introduce IoT technologies and 5G concepts that will enhance end-user experience and business potential for enterprises and society.”
The European Commission last month said the benefits of 5G technology would go beyond the mobile industry
A study conducted for the commission by InterDigital Europe
and Trinity College Dublin predicted that the technology has the potential to create new jobs in vertical industries and trickle-down effects worth €141.8 billion ($156.2 billion) by 2025

STOCKHOLM (AP) — The flight from Italy was one of the last arrivals that day at the Stockholm airport
A Swedish couple in their 50s walked up and loaded their skis into Razzak Khalaf's taxi
It was early March and concerns over the coronavirus were already present
both coughing for the entire 45-minute journey
assured Khalaf they were healthy and just suffering from a change in the weather
the Iraqi immigrant got seriously ill with COVID-19
Khalaf is part of the growing evidence that those in immigrant communities in the Nordic nations are being hit harder by the pandemic than the general population
Sweden took a relatively soft approach to fighting the coronavirus
one that attracted international attention
Large gatherings were banned but restaurants and schools for younger children have stayed open
The government has urged social distancing
That's more than 31 deaths per 100,000 population
compared with about 8 per 100,000 in neighboring Denmark
which imposed a strict lockdown early on that is only now being slowly lifted
anecdotal evidence emerged early in the outbreak that suggested that some — particularly those from Somalia and Iraq — were hit harder than others
data from Sweden’s Public Health Agency confirmed that Somali Swedes made up almost 5 percent of the country's COVID-19 cases
yet represented less than 1 percent of its 10 million people
Many in these communities are more likely to live in crowded
multigeneration households and are unable to work remotely
“No one cares for taxi drivers in Sweden,” said Khalaf
who tested positive and was admitted to a hospital when his condition deteriorated
the 49-year-old says he was sent home after six hours and told his body was strong enough to “fight it off.”
Helsinki authorities warned of a similar over-representation among Somali immigrants in the capital — some 200 cases
where immigrants make up nearly 15% of the general population
they represent about 25% of confirmed coronavirus cases
or any crisis will hit the most vulnerable people in society the most wherever in the world
and we see this in many many countries," said Isabella Lovin
Noting that the virus was spreading faster in some crowded Stockholm suburbs
Lovin said said the city is providing short-term accommodation to some people whose relatives are vulnerable
Norway and Finland recognized early failings in community outreach in minority languages and are seeking to fix this
has had high school students hand out leaflets in Somali
urging people to wash their hands and stay home if sick
With Sweden's relatively low-key approach to fighting the virus that relies mainly on voluntary social distancing
there are concerns the message has not reached everyone in immigrant neighborhoods
“It’s important that everyone living here who has a different mother tongue gets the right information,” said Warda Addallah
said officials have worked harder on communicating with such groups "to make sure they have the knowledge to protect themselves and avoid spreading the disease to others.”
But teacher and community activist Rashid Musa says the problem runs much deeper
“I wish it were that easy — that you needed to just translate a few papers,” he said
“We need to look at the more fundamental issue
“The rich have the opportunity to put themselves into quarantine
they can go to their summer houses,” Musa said
A key government recommendation for individuals to work from home if possible is harder in marginalized areas where many have jobs in the service sector
“How can a bus driver or a taxi driver work from home?” Musa asked
Evidence of this disparity can be found in anonymous data aggregated by mobile phone operator Telia
which has given the Swedish Health Authority information about population mobility
By comparing the number of people in an area early in the morning with those who traveled to another area for at least an hour later in the day
Telia estimates how many go to work and how many stay home
“We do see certain areas that are maybe more affluent with a bigger number of people working from home,” said Kristofer Agren
Data shows a 12 percentage point difference between Danderyd
one with the highest percentage of first- and second-generation immigrants
“Many of our members have contracted the coronavirus,” said Akil Zahiri
who helps administer the mosque on the outskirts of Stockholm
Zahiri spoke to the AP as he sat alone in Sweden’s largest Shiite mosque coordinating a video call with the congregation to pray for a member who died of COVID-19
The sound of prayer crackled through the computer
the month when Muslims fast during the day
Zahiri reminded the congregation to take part in social distancing
the daily breaking of the fast after sunset

an explosion occurred in the Electrum 1 building in Kista
Here you will find an update on the incident
emergency services and operating personnel from Akademiska Hus and EECS were quickly on the scene
The police have opened a criminal investigation
but there is currently no direct threat to KTH and its operations in Kista
This means that teaching and laboratory activities continue as planned
Any changes to this situation will be conveyed as soon as possible
To increase safety and security in and around the building
there will be 24-hours security guards on site
The damage to the building includes the entrance area at Isafjordsgatan 22
minor damages inside and some windows facing the courtyard
The emergency services and fire brigade quickly concluded that it was safe to stay in the building
The main part of the building has thus been open
and it has been possible to work on the other floors of the building
Those roughly 30 offices that suffered material damage are now being fixed and will be made available again as soon as possible
Once the police have lifted the restrictions
work will begin to rebuild the damaged entrance
While Akademiska Hus is working on a temporary entrance
we refer all visitors to the entrance at Kistagången 16
which is also available for passage (see drawing below)
The garage entrance at Isafjordsgatan 18B is also open for passage
This means garage tenants can from inside the garage access further parts of the building
In order to increase safety and security in and around the building
until the shell protection and entrance are secured
there will be guards on site around the clock from the time the police have removed their cordons

South Africa (09 February 2022) – 4-year-old Kyleigh ‘Milana’ Kista was diagnosed with a Complex Congenital Heart Defect at birth and requires urgent
raised the R5-million needed to pay for the life-saving surgery
known as Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia
was first described by Cardio-Thoracic surgeons as a ‘monster in her chest.’
Kyleigh has already endured three open-heart surgeries along with countless non-invasive procedures that have done little to remedy her little heart
The family received news from her medical team that they now had minimal options
The first option was to wait for Kyleigh’s heart and lungs to start failing
which would then qualify her for a heart and lung transplant
The catch with this option is that organ donors are very limited
and this kind of surgery has never been done on a paediatric patient
more viable but very costly option was to get Kyleigh to the Boston Children’s Hospital in the USA
where doctors could perform an innovative surgery that could save her
The family reached out to the hospital and found the good news they were searching for
The only catch with getting treatment overseas is the cost
The family needed to raise R5 million so that Kyleigh would qualify for treatment in Boston
The funds would need to be paid over before leaving South Africa
Then the hospital could issue a motivational letter to aid Kyleigh’s visa process
Thankfully, the R5 million was raised and paid over to the hospital
Kyleigh’s medical visa has been approved
and her surgery is set for the 24th of March

Denmark has named the Kista Public Library in Stockholm as the year’s best new public library
The Danish Agency for Culture and the IT firm Systematic have presented the “Systematic – Public Library of the Year Award 2015”
Sweden has the best public library when it comes to architecture
and engaging the participation of local citizens in its activities
And it did when the panel of judges for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) selected the Kista Public Library in Stockholm as the prize winner at its annual meeting in Cape Town
South Africa out of a total of five nominated libraries from
The panel of judges concluded that the Kista Public Library
which was designed by Wester + elsner Architects and built in a shopping centre in central Stockholm
is a sustainable project “in which the architecture is playful without being locked into a particular age group
The architectural solutions provide extreme flexibility
and new functions can easily be incorporated to meet the future needs of users.”
Denmark is helping to encourage the international spread of fundamental democratic values through public libraries: ”The Kista Public Library accommodates the fact that the local population is a complex group; and

Kungsleden’s business concept is to own
manage and improve commercial properties in growth regions in Sweden and to deliver attractive total returns
Kungsleden’s strategies to create value are based on meeting the premises requirements of customers by managing
improving and developing properties and planning consents and by optimising the company’s property portfolio
Kungsleden has been quoted on NASDAQ Stockholm since 1999
The summary reports are more detailed descriptions based on the SWOT analyses made before the summer when opportunities and risks as well as advantages and disadvantages of the move where identified
The analyses have been developed by working groups in the School of Industrial Engineering and Management and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
"This leads to questions that bring the alternatives to a head about how we can best organize and thereby strengthen KTH's education and research for the future," says Mikael Lindström Deputy President who led the review
When it comes to the development of KTH's activities in Södertälje
Either close down or to make substantial investments to reverse the trend and improve application pressure
"What we know for sure is that we cannot continue as we are," says Mikael Lindström
who has visited Kista and Södertälje in recent weeks to collect questions and concerns from staff at the two campuses
The in-depth report from the ITM school shows
that there are advantages to an integrated environment for education and research on the KTH Campus
there is a need to invest in experimental environments
learning environments in undergraduate education in order to maintain quality
It is unclear how a move might affect the staffing situation
This requires a separate analysis of the economic situation
"Having the operations in Kista and Södertälje thoroughly analyzed from all the different perspectives is important and valuable and constitutes a very good basis for preparing the Board’s decision," says Mikael Lindström
but here it isa question of moving the operations to KTH Campus or through major investments
increasing the use of the Electrum lab and
In the in-depth analysis of EECS activities in Kista produced by the working group
where it is feared that it will be crowded if all activities
students and staff are moved to Valhallavägen and in the final word it says "In the near future
KTH Campus Valhallavägen cannot offer an equivalent alternative for continued development while maintaining quality
But we are working as quickly as possible based on the well-prepared analyses that have been made and I would like to thank everyone who has participated for a good dialogue," says Mikael Lindström
The next step is to present the results of the analyses to the University Board on 4 October
KTH's management group will prepare a proposal on which the board can make an decision on 22 November

South Africa (07 January 2022) – 3-year-old Kyleigh ‘Milana’ Kista was diagnosed with a Complex Congenital Heart Defect at birth and needs urgent
raised over R2-million to help towards the cost of her life-saving surgery
“Kyleigh does not have the valve that connects the heart to the lungs
the arteries that are meant to be attached to this value is free-floating and underdeveloped and not connected to her heart
She has a large hole in heart and survives on 2 collateral arteries of which one has already started to narrow severely
This all puts a lot of strain on her little body.“ says Serina Kista
The family received news from her medical team that they now had very limited options
The first option – wait for Kyleigh’s heart and lungs to start failing
“Kyleigh would need to be condemned to significant suffering and damage to her heart and lungs before being admitted into ICU in a critical condition to be placed on a donor list and fight for her life with no guarantee of finding a donor in time “
more viable but very costly option is to get Kyleigh to the Boston Children’s Hospital in the USA
where doctors can perform an innovative surgery that could save her
“They proposed an innovative technique to repair her heart
which they currently perform with great success at the hospital
They will use Kyleigh’s current anatomy and reconstruct her blood vessels in order to flow effectively through her lungs while also incorporating her collateral arteries as part of this procedure,” says Serina
Understanding the urgency of the procedure, the hospital kindly offered a reduced rate for the operation, which is still an astronomical amount for the family without power or influence. To fund the operation in the USA, estimated at R5 000 000 ($295,761), the family has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy
to appeal to the public to support their final and only hope to save their little one
“Boston Children’s Hospital has given us new hope and we are holding on to this option with all that is in us
our little girl will never get the chance to grow up and have a normal
With overwhelming support from over 1600 donors both locally and internationally
over R2.3 million has already been raised on BackaBuddy
which will be transferred directly to the medical facility in Boston
“We received overwhelming support from family
prayers and faith that Kyleigh will not only obtain the money for the procedure but will succeed through the procedure
We felt hopeless and alone but today we have so many people coming to Kyleigh’s rescue to help us give a future
an opportunity at life” says Kyleigh’s mother
Time is of the essence; once funds are raised
they will be paid to the Boston Children’s Hospital
The hospital will then issue a letter of motivation so the family can apply for a medical visa which will allow them entry into the USA for the surgery and following recovery time
Every day new people join the cause. Kyleigh has a mere three months to get this surgery, and time is already running away. You can support this cause via BackaBuddy here

Corem has signed a 3-year lease for approximately 1,300 square meters of office space with the technology company Accurate Nordic in the property Helgafjäll 7 in Kista
The office space that Accurate Nordic takes over was created in 2020 as a climate-smart sustainable office
based on 100 percent reuse in combination with comfort
and has since then constituted Corem's unit office for northern Stockholm
"We see good advantages in operating in a technology-intensive district like Kista
The location creates opportunities for technology exchange and collaborations and provides an improved recruitment base
the premises and its flexible design enable a great improvement in functionality for our business and invite creative internal collaborations”
"We are happy to welcome Accurate as the successor to our sustainable office in Kista
The company also adds well to the technical arena that Kista represents," said Rutger Arnhult

the professional support (VS) will move into EIT's old premises in Kista
VS will share the office space with the new research centre
We have talked to the school's Head of Administration
the professional support will leave all the current office premises on the third floor except for the rooms used for exam administration
The ambition is for the move to be completed by 20 September at the latest
"We are moving to excellent and practical premises"
"We will continue to heat and eat our lunch in the large kitchen if you wish
but there will be coffee and fruit on the new premises."
"We are also in the final phase of planning the new modern kitchen in Kista
It will be a fantastic and pleasant place to meet"
The decision is in line with the initiative "close to the business"
which deals with how we can best support the business
we sit more together in an intimate environment
to have close cooperation with the divisions and between the units at VS."
the Operational support will sit two by two with a permanent roommate
"We have planned for everyone to be able to sit there regardless of whether you are working or hybrid or on-site"
"The move enables us always to have someone from VS' units there
It becomes clear where we sit and thus easier to find us
we have arranged for an HR room so that you always know you can find an HR person there."
The planning of the move is underway, and practical information will be available shortly. Andreas Sjögren
