The two new Nytillverkad additions are IKEA favourites that have never gone out of production – or style Take a peek at the KLIPPAN sofa and POÄNG armchair refreshed in bold new looks by their late designer Play video From Hokkaido to ÄlmhultBoth the KLIPPAN sofa and POÄNG armchair were created by Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura – or “Nacka” as he was affectionately known as by his colleagues – in collaboration with product developer Lars Engman and others worked for IKEA in Sweden between 1975 and 1978 KLIPPAN and POÄNG were both designed during this time and remain two of the most recognisable products in the IKEA range Find out more about the story behind these classics It had been more than 40 years since Noburo Nakamura had last worked with IKEA but when he received the call to reimagine the POÄNG armchair he answered with his characteristic vigour and singular style today's POÄNG armchair is made for relaxed chatting and socialising Just as bold is the updated colour palette Nakamura was tasked with designing a bentwood armchair in layer-glued birch veneer at a low price and made for large-scale production He came up with a cantilevered chair frame made from moulded plywood and POEM was born The combination of design and material gave POEM “a gentle flex that would allow the sitter to swing in an elegant way.” POEM made its first appearance on the cover of the 1977 IKEA catalogue and became an immediate success.  In 1992 it was replaced by its more modern successor With a collective lifespan of almost half a century I like to approach my design in a similar way." Few products embody Scandinavian design and IKEA design principles better than the KLIPPAN sofa it is simple while still providing comfort and function.  Nakamura’s 21st-century KLIPPAN update pays homage to the striking cover of the 1984 IKEA Catalogue The new KLIPPAN covers come in matching textile bags Bring home a new look for your sofa on the bus or give one away the next time you go to a housewarming many of our greatest successes are born out of failure or mistakes and KLIPPAN is the perfect example When product developer Lars Engman received two expensive Italian sofas to try out they failed the toughest test; Lars’ six-year-old daughter she and her friends had bounced them to ruin This led him to thinking about how IKEA could create a reasonably priced good-looking sofa that could withstand family life Noboru Nakamura had designed the LAPPMON sofa Taking the LAPPMON frame as the starting point The eventual success of KLIPPAN was down to its covers Its popularity rose with the introduction of a wider variety of colours and prints Although little has changed to the structure (and comfort) of this family favourite over more than four decades it’s possibly had more makeovers than any other IKEA product KLIPPAN: cover star of the 1980 IKEA Catalogue ”POÄNG and KLIPPAN are timeless because they combine beautiful form and good function with a reasonable price and long-lasting quality.” These new additions to the Nytillverkad collection are available online and at your local IKEA store from July. KLIPPAN, Sweden – Led by a team of young talents, the United States won six medals in the Senior division at the Klippan Lady Open, led by individual champion Alexandria Alli (72 kg). Alli split her two matches on Friday, losing to Elvira Ersson of Sweden, 12-4, then pinning Faith Telford of Canada in 3:59. This placed her second in Pool A, which qualified her for the semifinals. On Sunday, Alli won two close matches, beating Lilly Schneider of Germany, 2-1 in the semifinals, then edging Jennifer Rosler of Germany, 5-4 in the finals. Alli is a member of USA Wrestling’s Elite Accelerator Program (EAP), where they train at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Claiming a silver medal at 62 kg was 2022 U20 World Team member SaVannah Cosme, after dropping a 10-0 technical fall to 2024 Olympian Johanna Lindborg of Sweden in the finals. Cosme won all three of her bouts on Friday, with a pin and two decisions. Four U.S. wrestlers won bronze medals, Everest Leydecker (53 kg), Carissa Qureshi (55 kg), Hannah Errthum (62 kg) and Destiny Rodriguez (68 kg). Leydecker, who wrestled in the 2023 U17 World Championships and also qualified for the 2024 U17 World World Team, scored an impressive 5-1 victory over World bronze medalist Katarzyna Krawczyk of Poland in her bronze-medal bout. Qureshi, an EAP athlete, stopped Sara Rantonen of Finland, 11-7 in the bronze-medal round. Errthum scored a pin in her bronze-medal bout, putting away Naemi Leistner of Germany in 5:40. Rodriguez, a 2022 U20 World Team member and 2018 U15 Pan American champion, defeated Wilma Hoffman of Sweden, 8-2, to claim the bronze medal. Two U.S. wrestlers placed fifth after dropping bronze-medal bouts, high school wrestlers Amelia Murphy (50 kg) and Skylar Slade (65 kg). a fact that was both convenient and painful at the same time - I lived with the widespread living room staple that is the IKEA KLIPPAN sofa you are sure to recognise its now iconic angular and modern shape This is the sofa most landlords and first sofa buyers alike choose to get for the simple reason of its low price point starting at £250 which is difficult to beat But I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to settle for the KLIPPAN sofa since there are better alternatives at a similiar low price point ‘Its minimalist design fits seamlessly into a variety of interiors and the option to swap out covers gives it a level of customisation that’s hard to beat at its price point.’ But the extremely low price means that IKEA had to make sacrifices in other areas in making this design ‘The KLIPPAN does have its drawbacks as the foam cushions tend to flatten over time and the low backrest may not suit everyone While the interchangeable covers are great for a quick refresh which takes away from the sofa's polished look but it’s not always the best long-term investment,’ Alex says With sofas, you generally get what you pay for so if you are looking for a long-term, durable investment, then more expensive sofas are worth it then these are the styles I’d recommend to go for instead If you want to stick with the Swedish retailer’s offering there are plenty of other sofa options to choose from Alex at Flitch specifically recommends the VIMLE sofa Sign up to our newsletter for style and decor inspiration which makes it a better choice for both lounging and durability,’ Alex explains And if you don’t know how I feel about modular sofas yet just know that I love them…very much so Even the best sofa beds are famously more affordable than most sofas are Which is why investing in one is the perfect solution to this issue – not to mention that it kills two birds with one stone as you get an extra temporary bed in case you have guests over But there are many amazing sofa beds available on the market ‘Made.com’s Haru Sofa Bed is perfect for compact living spaces that need to double as guest rooms,’ Alex suggests This design doesn’t necessarily solve the issue of comfort when compared to the IKEA KLIPPAN one of my biggest problems with the KLIPPAN in fact is that everyone has it Which in a way cheapens it and makes everyone grow tired of it – myself included And I would argue that the Evie looks just as (if not more) stylish as the KLIPPAN the price point is very comparable to the one of IKEA’s you can get a sleek 3-seater with removable cushions and in various colour and material options the brand regularly has offers on this chic mid-century modern-inspired style dropping its price down to £399 you’re getting a £1000-worth sofa for only £400 which is the best way to trick the system in my opinion And if I had to pick my favourite from this list this one would be it in all honesty as I've tested it in the Sofa.com showroom and loved it And DUSK customers are clearly loving this sleek design as it boasts over 220 five-star reviews especially as the brand regularly has offers on its sofas I would still recommend spending a little more on your sofa for it to stand the test of time – as already mentioned you largely get what you pay for when it comes to sofas I believe any one of these options is a worthwhile investment (albeit perhaps a short-term one) and a better alternative to the widespread IKEA KLIPPAN Even if just for the sole purpose of having something slightly different and less recognisable than everybody else and so far has tested over 150 different sofas Graduating from London College of Fashion with a bachelor’s degree in fashion journalism in 2016 she got her start in niche fashion and lifestyle magazines like Glass and Alvar as a writer and editor before making the leap into interiors working with the likes of 91 Magazine and copywriting for luxury bed linen brand Yves Delorme among others The United States will bring a young but talented team to compete in one of the traditionally strong competitions in women’s freestyle wrestling, the Klippan Lady Open in Klippan, Sweden, Feb. 14-16. The roster will feature 11 athletes, most who are eligible for the U20 age division, who will compete in the Senior division at the Klippan Cup. There are three U.S. athletes who will enter the U17 division there. The group is a nice mix of high school and post-high school wrestlers. Among the stars competing in the Senior division is Everest Leydecker at 53 kg, who wrestled in the 2023 U17 World Championships and also qualified for the 2024 U17 World Championships. Leydecker currently holds a No. 1 ranking at 125 pounds in the current National Girls High School rankings. There are two members of the USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) wrestling in the Senior tournament, Alexandria Alli (72 kg) and Carissa Qureshi (53 kg). Alli, who is still in high school, is fresh off a victory in the Grand View Open, a major college competition. Destiny Rodriguez, a 2022 U20 World Team member and 2018 U15 Pan American champion, will compete in the Senior division at 68 kg. Rodriguez, who is on the McKendree University roster, recently won the Adrian Open, a tough college tournament. Savannah Cosme, a 2022 U20 World Team member and two-time age-group Pan American medalist, will wrestle in the Senior division at 62 kg. Cosme won the Copper/Oppenheim Doane Open, a college event in December. Bella Williams, a past 16U Nationals champion and top high school star, will wrestle at 65 kg. Williams won the Viking Open, a college tournament in November. The three emerging young talents who will wrestle in the U17 division are Natalie Radecki (43 kg), Reagan Mathers (49 kg) and Emma Grimes (53 kg). The KLIPPAN series offers a soft fabric loveseat or coated fabric loveseat The first option features a washable cover made from a 100% polyester fabric while the latter includes a non-removable cover made of polyester and cotton covered with a protective coating of polyurethane The KLIPPAN loveseat with the washable polyester cover ($299 at IKEA) boasts a "durable material with a smooth weave and a nice two-tone effect" that's secured to the frame with Velcro strips you can wash it in a washing machine or by hand in a sink with warm water the loveseat garnered a 3.6-star rating out of five based on 96 reviews So, what do customers fancy about this loveseat? One buyer described it as a good choice for homes with pets and small children since the cover can be easily removed and washed as needed If you have a pet that sheds a lot or leaves other messes on your furniture you'll likely also appreciate this removable cover feature a "great starter couch," and good for small spaces stating that the loveseat is a reasonable purchase for the cost On the other side of the spectrum lie the 1-star reviews with most shoppers calling the loveseat low quality claiming that they wear out within months and adding that it may be a more appropriate buy for a child Also, part of the KLIPPAN loveseat series is the fixed cover option ($399 at IKEA) It gained a higher rating of 4.3 stars based on 35 reviews at the time of this article but it costs $100 more than the removable cover option is advertised as "easy to keep clean as it can be wiped with a damp sponge or mild detergent." If you don't want to deal with removing the cover every time your pet has an accident or sheds excessively Just as with the other KLIPPAN loveseat option, shoppers claim this fixed-cover version is cozy and a perfect sofa for small spaces Others confirmed the "easy-to-clean" description due to the faux leather protective coating one shopper felt the product was a "great sofa for the price." Only a few customers expressed dissatisfaction with this style with one commenting on how uncomfortable the loveseat was Another claimed it stains white clothing because the coating "melts" if you sit on it for too long The good news is if you have any concerns about the coating 'melting,' you can purchase a cover in one of four colors for $39.99 each at IKEA both offer pet-friendly features and come with a 10-year limited warranty As one of the highlights of Milan Design Week 2024 IKEA unveils the reimagined designs of its iconic bestsellers – the KLIPPAN sofa and POÄNG armchair These are the latest additions to the Nytillverkad collection which blends classic designs with contemporary twists 1:56 PM EST@layer recipes{.css-107anqq{font-family:var(--chakra-fonts-body);color:var(--components-article-header-hero-author-text-color);font-size:var(--chakra-font-sizes-xs);line-height:1;width:-webkit-fit-content;width:-moz-fit-content;width:fit-content;}html.teamusa-theme .css-107anqq{text-transform:uppercase;}@media screen and (min-width: 80rem){.css-107anqq{font-size:var(--chakra-font-sizes-md);line-height:md;}}}by Gary Abbott The United States received its draws for the Senior division at the 2025 Klippan Lady Open in Klippan all who are currently competing at the age-group levels will wrestle in the Senior division of this annual respected tournament Three past age-group World Team members will wrestle in the Senior division Savannah Cosme (62 kg) and Destiny Rodriguez (68 kg) who wrestled in the 2023 U17 World Championships and also qualified for the 2024 U17 World World Team will face the winner of the match between 2022 Taipei U17 World Team member Ciao Yun Li and 2021 World School Combat Games silver medalist Lisette Bottker of Estonia has drawn 2021 U23 European bronze medalist Eyleen Sewina of Germany will battle 2023 U17 World bronze medalist Melina Samsonsen of Norway in her opening match There are two members of the USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) wrestling in the Senior tournament Alexandria Alli (72 kg) and Carissa Qureshi (53 kg) Alli and Qureshi train full-time at the U.S Qureshi opens against Susan Larsen of Sweden Alli is in the three-athlete Pool A of her weight class She will compete against both  2024 U20 World bronze medalist Elvira Ersson of Sweden and then 2024 Bill Farrell Memorial silver medalist Faith Telford of Canada in her Group competition The Senior division will begin on Saturday U17 wrestlers competing today and Saturday Results will be posted in a separate article Vs. Ikea coaxed designer Noboru Nakamura out of retirement to reimagine his popular Klippan sofa and Poäng armchair in bright primary colors for the latest edition of its anniversary Nytillverkad collection and studied at the Carl Malmsten Furniture School and the University of Arts Crafts and Design in Sweden before joining Ikea in 1975 He collaborated with Ikea on the new collection before died last year Nakamura often credited simplicity as key to his work “The Japanese flag only has a circle,” Nakamura said I like to approach my design in a similar way.” Nakamura’s Klippan sofa wasn’t immediately a bestseller when Ikea first released it in 1980 but it eventually became a fan favorite thanks in part to washable covers For the release of Poäng (originally released in 1977) and changed the originally laid-back angle of the chair to be more upright While inflation has the price of some other furniture pieces going up Ikea says its Poäng armchair is 21% cheaper now due to its ability to be flat packed “New designs are normally more expensive to produce,” Ikea production innovation leader Sebastian Svensson said in a statement “But by making adjustments to an already existing production lie the prince for Poäng low-back armchair can start low.” The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Ikea also releases limited-edition covers for the loveseat each year, so it’s easy to update its look. Or perhaps you prefer a Union Jack couch or black-and-white striped loveseat? You’ll find a plethora of Etsy shops with Klippan covers for sale. First released in 1979, the loveseat is still one of Ikea’s most popular items today. It’s named after the the Klippan Municipality in Southern Sweden. (Fun fact: All Ikea sofas, armchairs, chairs and dining tables are named after places in Sweden.) When Ikea opened their first U.S. store in Philadelphia in 1985, the Klippan cost $395, Apartment Therapy reported By switching up the materials and reducing its shipping costs Ikea has been able to cut the price by 40% over the past 30 or so years IKEA KLIPPAN 1979 – 2009 from Apartment Therapy Media on Vimeo Another reason why Marcus Engman may be so smitten with this little loveseat Marcus remembers his father bringing home multiple Klippan prototypes in the ’70s Lars collected feedback from his kids to improve the design “I have a lot of fond memories with that sofa and I’m glad that it has survived for so long,” he said The opinions expressed here by Inc.com columnists are their own The super early-rate deadline for the 2025 Inc. "You can change its color and live with it for a long time," Engman says the sofa ranges from $249 to $299 in the US — a low price that Engman believes helps the Klippan appeal to many first-time apartment owners He adds that the item carries many personal memories for him Engman's father brought home many models of the sofa during its development "I remember when he brought it home for tests and he asked me and my sister what we thought of it," Engman says "I have a lot of fond memories with that sofa and I'm glad that it has survived for so long."
