The 553MW portfolio consists of four wind farms in the Kramfors and Sollefteå municipalities of the country
UK-based Renewable Power Capital (RPC) has secured €555m ($602.9m) financing to facilitate the construction and operation of a 553MW onshore wind project portfolio in Sweden
A group of lenders provided the long-term financing
which is among the biggest in Europe for a greenfield onshore wind portfolio. The mandated lead arrangers were CIBC
Apex served as the facility and security agent
The financed portfolio consists of four wind farms located in the Kramfors and Sollefteå municipalities of Sweden
They will supply green electricity to the equivalent of 182,000 households
investment and structured finance head Sylvain Delion stated: “This portfolio is RPC’s largest investment to date
so we’re thrilled to be taking a crucial step towards operation
Closing long-term financing for our flagship onshore wind portfolio in Sweden is another major milestone in our investment and operating strategy
supporting RPC’s approach to obtain long-term stable risk-adjusted returns
“The level of external debt raised and the complexity of the financing structure are testament to RPC’s expertise and progress as a renewables company
We’re delighted to have closed this financing with such an impressive number of partners
and we look forward to working alongside them to drive decarbonisation.”

In April 2024 RPC disclosed that Procter & Gamble has entered into a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 140MW Sörlidberget wind farm
This agreement is the fourth PPA for the cluster
following three other ten-year PPAs with LyondellBasell and Ardagh
Nearly all of the renewable energy produced by the portfolio has now been contracted
RPC placed an order for 80 wind turbines from the German manufacturer Nordex for this cluster
Nordex is scheduled to begin the delivery and installation of these turbines in the spring of 2025
with the wind farms expected to commence operations between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026
In March 2023 RPC expanded its energy storage capabilities by forming a development partnership with Altea Green Power
This collaboration aims to develop 1GW of battery energy storage systems in Italy
marking RPC’s entry into a new European market

The High Coast has been designated a World Heritage Site
The High Coast (Höga Kusten) — The Ångermanland coast is the highest and steepest coast along the entire Baltic
Here the sea literally meets the mountains
During the last ice age the ice sheet of this area was maybe 3 kilometers thick and the earth´s crust was compressed
and this isostatic uplift is still in progress on today
This is the main reason why the High Coast has been designated a World Heritage Site
The UNESCO decision to place Sweden's 'Höga Kusten' on the World Heritage List was based on a complex global comparative analysis
the extraordinary natural phenomena of the landscape
the High Coast's culture-historical value and the regional government's intention to eco-label the area
In June 1998 the Swedish Government decided to nominate the High Coast in the county of Västernorrland for inclusion on the World Heritage List
At the World Heritage Committee meeting in Marrakech in December 1999 the committee decided to defer the nomination
The grounds were that the area's unique characteristics were not described in sufficient detail
In April 2000 additional reports and information was sent to Unesco
The new material had been jointly produced by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency
the Västernorrland County Administrative Board
the Central Board of National Antiquities and the Geological Survey of Sweden
In the Committee's decision an analysis of the High Coast's characteristics as an area of land uplift in comparison with other similar areas of the world and a comparison with the Quark area was requested
A brief summary of the global comparative study conducted showed
- The High Coast has the highest isostatic land uplift in the world after the latest glaciation
The relative land uplift is 285 metres above the present sea level
A comparison with all land uplift areas in the world after the latest glaciation shows that the only comparable area is at Hudson Bay in Canada where the equivalent uplift is 272 metres
The other areas with isostatic land uplift reach substantially lower levels
within many of these areas the isostatic land uplift can be difficult to distinguish from tectonic uplift
- Due to the undulating terrain the distance between the highest shoreline in the High Coast and its present shoreline is only approximately 2 km whereas at Hudson Bay the distance is roughly 50 km
The land uplift's geological and biological impact is therefore exceptionally evident and concentrated in the High Coast while they are scattered and diffuse at Hudson Bay
The rate of land uplift in the High Coast is presently 8 mm per annum
- The High Coast is the finest site for the study and understanding of the important processes that formed the glaciated and land uplift areas of the earth's surface and which have decisive significance in the explanation of:
- the distribution of various vegetation types above and below the highest shoreline
- the current division of cultivated land and forestland in the countryside
The High Coast is situated in a climatic area that permits a considerably wider spectrum of these conditions than Hudson Bay that is located in a permafrost region
- The long-standing scientific studies of the High Coast mean that it is
an area of global significance with respect to the interpretation of the geological as well as biological and culture-historical effects of the great inland ice sheets and land uplift

Anne Rheinberger is an Erasmus exchange student during autumn 2024 from Heidelberg University in Germany
She travelled the entire 2200 km journey by train and bicycle over nine days
The autumn 2024 semester begins on 2 September with classes in full session
and the campus is alive once again with many new and returning faces from near and far
The new international students include 460 exchange students and approximately 300 foreign students enrolled in degree programmes and individual courses
Umeå University offers more than 40 master’s degree programmes and two programmes at the undergraduate level with instruction entirely in English
An orientation session was held on Wednesday in Aula Nordica to help the new students become acquainted with life in Umeå and studies at the university
It included information about the first weeks on campus
got to learn more about sustainability practices in recycling and waste sorting. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Cathrine Norberg welcomed the students and talked about the university’s global engagement and international collaboration.Anne Rheinberger is one of the many international students that just arrived in Umeå and attended the orientation
She is an Erasmus exchange student from Heidelberg University in southwest Germany and was determined to travel to Umeå in the most sustainable way possible
and then biked the rest of the way (about 500 km) to Umeå
The entire experience took over nine days and gave her memories to last a lifetime
Anne's bicycle is a Raleigh Roushhour 2.0 and she's had it for eight years
Anne fell in love with the breathtaking nature in northern Sweden
Anne was able to cycle through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Sweden
Cooling off in one of Sweden's 100,000 lakes on the eco-friendly route to Umeå
It is an understatement that Anne is excited to begin her Erasmus exchange at Umeå University
Anne hiked up Skuleberget and I was amazed by the beauty of the High Coast.
although my journey was hard and complicated sometimes
What made you decide to travel here by train and bicycle
I knew that I didn't want to take the plane to come to Umeå for environmental reasons and at the same time
I was looking for a possibility to take my own bike with me
The only night train where this isn’t necessary is the one I took
so that's why I started my bike tour in Östersund.
I’ve done several tours with my bike and tent and I think it's a great way to travel - you can cover long distances while getting to know a country
so I thought this might be the perfect adventure right at the beginning of my Erasmus semester
Was it complicated to travel by train and bicycle?
My journey started on the 15th of August when I took the train to northern Germany and stayed at a dear friend’s house
I took the ferry to Malmö and cycled to Lund
The night train to Östersund departed on 17 August
It is always a bit complicated to take the train with my bike and my luggage
but it wasn't my first time so I was prepared for that! After arriving in Östersund
I first cycled east to Hammarstrand and Kramfors and then further north through Örnsköldsvik and Nordmaling
more than 500 km and nearly 3500 meters difference in altitude.
What were the highlights of the trip?
I'm so happy about meeting many kind and open-minded people along the way
Only to mention a few: During my time on the night train
I had a nice chat with a employee of snälltåget
he wanted to support me in any way possible and decided to give me breakfast for free
I was invited for a fika by Kristina and Kolerik
I met Matthias and Olivier from France with whom I had a lovely evening
and we even cycled together the next day.
I rang the doorbell at a Swedish house to ask for a cup of tea because I was cold and wet
made me a sandwich and hot chocolate and spent some time with me
Everyone was open-minded and helpful and I'm more than thankful for that!
I often took a break at the cemetery - there was water to refill my bottle
and I always met elderly Swedes who were interested in where I'm traveling
Many of them didn't know English and when they heard that I'm from Germany
they were happy that I was able to talk to them in Swedish while I was happy to practice my language skills
My favorite sights until now have been the Högakustenbron and Skuleberget
I was really looking forward to cycling the Högakustenbron because I had previously seen a lot of pictures
It was impressing and the view was great!
I hiked up Skuleberget and I was amazed by the beauty of the High Coast that I could see
but it looks so beautiful from the top of the mountain!
Did you have any challenges or difficulties during your journey
It hasn't always been easy!On my very first day
I forgot the key for my bike lock at home - luckily
a friend of my mum drove to northern Germany that day
it hurt so badly that I cried because I thought this was the end of my journey
I tried to take it slowly and it worked out
but it could have been the end of my journey on my first day
traveling alone is a privilege because I can decide how long and fast I ride
when to get up in the morning and when to take a break
and I've got a lot of time alone with my thoughts which isn't always easy
I have to plan my way a lot more than by car
Every kilometer counts and I had to decide which sights I can see on my way
I couldn't see a cave I'd had loved to visit because this would have meant 10 km more plus a hike on an already long day.I realized that except for cities
there isn't a lot of bicycle infrastructure in northern Sweden
I had to decide between traveling on the same streets as cars or on gravel through forests which also always meant to take a longer way
the people I met and talked to and the opportunity of spending so much time outdoors and already seeing a part of Sweden is what I love and it was a great adventure
Why did you select Umeå University for your exchange experience
and fell in love with the nature of northern Europe
I haven't been to Sweden before but I hope that as an Erasmus student
I’ll not only discover the Swedish nature
but also get to know the people and their culture - a possibility that I don't have when I'm just on vacation.
My home university has a variety of partnerships with different Swedish cities
but the university of Umeå was the one I liked most
I had the impression that there is very good biology research and that it's a young city
not too big - all while being surrounded by nature and having the possibility to experience a winter with lots of snow
What is on your bucket list of things to do during your time in Umeå and northern Sweden
I want to enjoy my time and collect as many memories as possible
I'd like to make friends from around the world
go hiking together and find out where to eat the best cinnamon rolls in Umeå
Lucia in December and improve my Swedish language skills. And
It also happens to be the birthplace of Sweden's Queen Silvia
I'm studying chemistry and biology to become a teacher
I'll just take biology courses. Hobbies and Interests: I like doing gymnastics
Bicycle brand/model: Raleigh Roushhour 2.0
I've used it for 8 years now and I love it
Role model or some person I really admire: Wiebke Lühmann
She's a German woman who travels a lot by bike
and I know her because of her bikepacking trip to the North Cape
she's biking to South Africa which I think is pretty impressive
but also due to the many different cultures
landscapes and people she gets to know along her way
Ranked first of all participating universities in the world for student satisfaction
Health and well-being are the focus of the international certification
Umeå University's ambition is to actively contribute to the sustainable transition of society

Suicide is the leading cause of death among people aged 15-24 in Sweden today
In 60 different municipalities around Sweden
schools offer students aged around 14 to take part in the program YAM
The program includes classes where students can role-play difficult scenarios
Marie Westerberg works with YAM at Kramfors municipality and says the program helps students to open up
”so it's not so hard to talk about these difficult subjects”

After several delays including legal challenges
the 190km (118-mile) 1,435mm gauge Botniabanan mixed-use high-speed lin
the 190km (118-mile) 1,435mm gauge Botniabanan mixed-use high-speed line from Nyland to Örnsköldsvik and Umeå in north-eastern Sweden opened in August 2010
An agreement was signed in November 1997 between the Swedish national government and the regional governments to create the new Botniabanan
a direct route that would also give better links to a chain of towns along the Gulf of Bothnia
It would also provide relief for an existing trunk line
which is restricted by its winding single-track formation and severe gradients
The line opened up new journey opportunities for passengers and promoting regional development
which is part of a link to the networks of Russia
Now in the context of an upsurge of rail use in Sweden
the project has the added dimension of improving a continuous rail connection with the rest of Europe via the Øresund fixed link to Denmark
This now extends onwards into Germany via Great Belt crossing and in future through the more direct Fehmarnbelt fixed link project
was set up by the Swedish state (which owns 91%) and the regional governments of Kramfors
construction work formally started in August 1999 with an initial view to completion as early as 2006
Journey times between Stockholm and Umeå were reduced from nine hours to around five-and-a-half hours and a four-hour coach journey from Sundsvall to Umeå was reduced to a two-and-a-half hour train trip
in concert with contracted companies Botniabanan has built the line in accordance with Swedish Rail Administration Banverket regulations for approval
is the only section operating during the initial years
between Ornskoldsvik and Ådalsbanan is yet to begin
The operations on this section have been delayed until mid 2012 due to ERTMS signal system installation on the line
Banverket will take over responsibility for the line and lease it to Botniabanan until the investment is paid off
Thereafter ownership of the line will transfer to Banverket
Over its 190km (118-mile) length made up of mainly single line with passing loops
the Botniabanan crosses difficult terrain requiring 140 bridges
25km (16 miles) of tunnels (with escape routes every 500m) and the excavation of 8 million m³ of rock and 8.7 million m³ of earth
including the 6km (3.7-mile) Namntallhojden and the 5.2km (3.2-mile) Bjornboleshojden tunnels
Around 130 contracts were let by Botniabanan for the project
and to Banverket’s Industrial Division for electrification work
Six new stations were built for regional traffic at Örnsköldsvik North and Umeå East and for all trains at Örnsköldsvik Central
Umeå Central station was rebuilt to act as a regional hub and interchange between regional and express trains
A major consideration for the builders was the need to meet stringent demands in this sensitive area
This has been particularly felt in the planning and construction of three of the longest bridges on the line – the 1.04km (0.64-mile) bridge over the River Angermanalven
and the 965m bridge over the River Natraan
The line is electrified at the Swedish standard of 15kV AC overhead supply to enable through running from other Banverket lines
Power is supplied by 20 3MVA autotransformers supplied by Balfour Beatty Rail
Overhead lines are suspended from 3,200 masts
with track supported on 320,000 sleepers and held in place by 1.2 million Pandrol fastenings
The axle load has been increased from the old line’s 25t to 30t
except through Örnsköldsvik where the route of the line and surroundings dictate 600m radius curves
The rolling stock in use is a mixture of regional trains
As the line is built for speeds of up to 250km/h (155mph)
210km/h (130mph) X2000 tilting trains could use their capabilities for the fastest trains
supported by Rc electric locomotives capable of 160km/h (100mph) on slower trains and overnight services
The Rc is also the mainstay of freight haulage in Sweden
with many owned by SJ freight subsidiary Green Cargo
at least 300t heavier than the current line
Given the northern routes have less heavy passenger patronage than in the relatively densely populated south
Botniabanan uses the 200km/h variant of the wide-bodied Bombardier Regina range which in other forms is already widely used in Sweden
Ordered by SJ during 2008 for delivery in 2010 with any option for more
these new four-car units with 3+2 seating allows fleet concentration of the ABB/Adtranz X2 (X2000 service) sets built 1989–98
Principal passenger operator SJ is considering X2 replacement with 250km/h non-tilting trains
possibly evolving from the Green Train research project (also currently using Regina class vehicles) which includes Banverket and Bombardier
The Botniabanan could eventually see use by this next generation of front-line passenger stock
Freight trains of up to 1,600t also link city centres
reducing the need for road transport in the area
The Botniabanan is the first in Sweden to be fitted with European Traffic Management System Level 2 (ERTMS) that allows for no fixed line-side signals being fitted
Conducted initially at 40km/h (25mph) before gradually raising speeds
the first trials took place during April 2007 on a 20km section between Husum and Örnsköldsvik
A former Austrian OBB Class 1142 electric locomotive without the standard Swedish signalling equipment is leased from Hector Rail by Banverket for ETCS Level 2 testing
A safety system in the tunnels will prevent trains from coming to a halt in the long bores
To further increase safety there will be no level crossings of any sort on the route
with all paths and roads crossing under or over the line
Six million tons of freight is expected to need moving each year
and the project aims to attract business from the region’s roads
can carry five million tons of freight annually
The new line alone has double this capacity to allow for continued growth
Although sections of the line are being phased into use by freight
installations continue and the final part of the project to be completed is that at the northern Umeå end

it is not enough to measure which chemicals are in the sediment
The toxicity and effects of individual substances on the ecosystem may be relatively well-known
but it is much more difficult to assess the so-called cocktail effect
or can the combinations of different substances increase or decrease toxicity
A group of EcoChange researchers investigated the sediments from Kramfors
and have a long history with sawmill industry
pulp industry and other industrial operations
The sediments within these marine areas are heavily burdened by various environmental toxins
To get a picture of the sediment's potential impact on the ecosystem
the researchers used newly fertilized zebra fish embryos
The sediments of the seabed serve as large sinks for a variety of environmental toxins
The aim of the study was to investigate how much information about toxicity and effects can be obtained by using the so-called FET method
FET stands for Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity Test
and has been developed as an alternative both to the commonly used AFT (Acute Fish Toxicity Test) method and to performing cell-level testing
A common FET involves using zebra fish embryos
The embryos are exposed to testing conditions
the embryos develop hearts and basal motor functions
one can also measure effects on the heartbeat
The method is fast and relatively inexpensive and can provide information on effects on more complicated organisms
This type of toxicity test provides opportunities to get a more nuanced picture of the effects on the ecosystem
In addition to measuring mortality after a certain period of exposure
it is possible to measure a number of other factors
and changes in behavior can provide important information about effects not only on individuals but also at the population level
fish embryos were kept in sediment solutions from the different areas
The effects that emerged among fish embryos were then linked to various compositions of environmental toxins
These analyzes showed that the sediments from Kramfors had the highest environmental pollutant load of the three areas
The Kramfors sediments also contained much higher concentrations of PAHs
while the sediments from Örnsköldsvik contained pesticides against fungi and insects
while others were specific to one of the areas
All embryos exposed to Kramfors sediment developed curved spines and slow
A decreased heart rhythm was detected in tests from all three areas
although the effect was most evident in the Kramfors sediment test
it was possible to distinguish different effect patterns for the different areas
which could be linked to the sediment composition of environmental toxins
The study was able to show effects that were the result of the different mixtures of environmental toxins
so the method seems to work well for testing cocktail effects
and to be able to assess how different mixtures of environmental toxins can affect populations and the marine environment
The article has earlier been published in the annual report EcoChange 2019

is going to build an extension the Bollsta saw mill in Bollstabruk
modern sorting line that in the future can double production in the saw mill
The sorting line is the part of the sawing process where timber is sorted for quality before delivery
The project also includes groundwork and building a new workshop and a storehouse
“We work in close cooperation with our customer
We have experience from previous projects with SCA and together we have developed a work method that functions very well in this kind of extensive
“This investment means we can increase production by 50,000 m3 sawn product
We will also lower our costs since we won’t have to sort our products in two older lines anymore
Instead production in the saw mill will be rational from start to finish.”
The project is a traditional contract in partnering
Construction will begin in November 2019 and is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2022
The project will be order registered in the fourth quarter 2019
