coverage of the 14 matches on Sunday in round 4 of the Men’s EHF EURO 2026 Qualifiers Remains of a ceremonial site from the Neolithic period are currently being investigated by archaeologists from the National Historical Museums The site comprises a causewayed enclosure and wetland offerings dating to 3,500-3,000 BC large quantities of flint tools and well-preserved bone and horn tools are among the remarkable finds material that has been recovered during the excavation "The remains and artefacts are very well preserved which is extremely unusual for a site from this period" says Magnus Artursson Archaeologists were surprised when they excavated the site in Hammar east of Kristianstad in the southern Swedish province of Skåne Wetland deposits had been discovered during the previous evaluation of the site but further investigation found a dry-stone wall along the edge of the wetland An astonishing finds assemblage was recovered from the 1-1.2 metre deep wetland deposits including large quantities of Funnel Beaker pottery Preserved artefacts made of horn and bone are extremely unusual from this period and at Hammar archaeologists have so far recovered an antler billet for flint knapping a fishing hook and a stylus for leatherwork An even more surprising feature is the contemporary causewayed enclosure lying close to the wetland edge pits laid out in a semicircle at the crest of the shallow ridge Some of the pits were also lined with stones while Funnel Beaker vessels were deliberately deposited in others the archaeologists have also recovered large amounts of worked flint and animal bones is similar to sites outside of Sweden such as the well-known site in Sarup "These are unique for the Neolithic period in this country We have discovered a ceremonial complex where people gathered at a certain time or at certain times during the year to celebrate religious festivals The finds suggest feasts with ritual butchering and deposition of offerings both in the wetland and in the open pits of the enclosure" growing various crops and keeping animals such as sheep The dead were buried in passage graves or dolmens "The first farmers came to Scandinavia around 4,000 BC We have two passage graves just a few kilometres away from the same period Due to the cultural historical and scientific significance of the find the archaeologists are now seeking further funding from the Swedish National Heritage Board to enable them to continue the exciting excavation Archaeological period: Early Neolithic II to Middle Neolithic AI-II through the European University Alliance COLOURS hosted several events in connection with the Spot on Food conference Researchers and students from several other alliance universities participated Spot on Food is organized by Krinova Incubator & Science Park and Kristianstad Municipality – We are taking the first steps towards many further collaborations locally the university's project leader for the implementation of COLOURS the event kicked off with the start of a three-day hackathon including students from the university's gastronomy and computer science programs tackled the task of transforming and improving food management from a sustainability perspective – We are using the same concept that we usually have in Kristianstad University's innovation education program This has been a much longer session than usual allowing for deeper work and more concrete solutions where representatives from COLOURS—researchers and students—gathered to get to know each other learn more about Kristianstad University's activities and consider potential future collaborations the meeting took place at the university's new CoSpace in Galleria Boulevard in central Kristianstad The morning was focused on food from an interdisciplinary FOHRK perspective FOHRK is the university's research and education profile focused on food Representatives from North Macedonia (University St Kliment Ohridski Bitola) and France (Le Mans University) presented their institutions and relevant research related to food the guests had the opportunity to tour the campus and learn about the research environments and other activities – It's always exciting to meet colleagues from other countries These days gave us a great opportunity to discuss the societal challenges surrounding sustainable and healthy eating habits that we at FOHRK are tackling in our research profile along with other attendees of the Spot on Food conference went on a field study to get to know local food companies The next day the major Spot on Food conference took place the final teams from Food Hack were also showcased the winners were announced: "Online Pantry," with participants from the university's own gastronomy program – What’s also exciting about this type of event is getting new perspectives on the research we are working on Perspectives from different countries and from business and entrepreneurial sectors can vary CoLab is a For residents of the city of Kristianstad, Sweden, the answer is energy. Kristianstad (pop. 81,000) is the lowest point in Sweden, several meters below sea level. Being well aware of the threats it faces due to climate change, in 1999 the city declared that it would become a fossil-fuel free municipality best known for being the home of Absolut Vodka and powering its buildings with agricultural Kristianstad started laying out pipes for a district heating system hoping that would help it save on fuel consumption The district heating system originally relied on fossil fuels But in 1991 Sweden became the first country in the world to impose a carbon tax and Kristianstad started looking for alternatives a combined heat and power (CHP) plant producing 400 GWh of heat and 70 GWh of electricity from wood All of the wood used in the biomass plant comes from within a 100 km radius of the plant The 70 GWh of electricity produced each year is sold to the grid for the CHP plant and increased district heating system officials say the payback has already been significant Kristianstad now spends less than half of the $7 million previously spent each year to heat its municipal buildings about 6 to 7 percent of the city’s total consumption The waste for the plant comes from a slaughterhouse organic kitchen waste was banned from Swedish landfills All homes in Kristianstad now collect their kitchen scraps separately in paper bags that are collected every two weeks—by biogas-powered trucks—and brought to Karpalund Manure from 22 farms is also added to the mix Farmers deliver the manure and in return get free fertilizer the output of the plant after the biogas is produced Surplus fertilizer is sold to farmers not supplying manure for just under $3 per cubic meter the Karpalund plant produced 93,000 tons of liquid bio-fertilizer in 1999 the city entered into a joint venture with energy company E.ON to turn waste from the city’s sewage plant into biogas also to be used as fuel for buses and cars The city produces more biogas than can be used in its buses and cars so the excess is “exported” to nearby municipalities with three public gas stations offering biogas Biogas is cheaper than gasoline due to the carbon tax on fossil fuels and the fact that it is produced from waste For a few years the city subsidized—through government grants—the cost of converting a car to biogas or purchasing a biogas vehicle and provided owners of biogas cars with free parking If you’re not keen on traveling by animal byproducts the city has also installed over 163 km of bicycle paths Other programs to promote cycling include an annual bicycle orienteering competition and production of a pamphlet called Traffic Smart that compares different commuting alternatives between specific residential areas and workplaces and health benefits—shown by the amount of chocolate burned in calories by using the different methods (obviously bicycling wins) The city is also investing in wind turbines and solar energy There are currently 40 privately owned wind turbines producing 135 GWh of electricity per year And two PV arrays produce 20 MWh of electricity per year one located at the Naturum biosphere reserve and one powering houses in the Österäng multistory housing complex In 2014 the municipality will install five more PV systems on municipal buildings totaling an additional 120 kW Kristianstad innovatively addressed several problems at once—disposing of waste “It’s a much more secure energy supply—we didn’t want to buy oil anymore from the Middle East or Norway,” says Lennart Erfors Kristianstad’s coordinator for local climate strategy “And it has created jobs in the energy sector.” Your donation to RMI helps us continue our vital work we will keep you informed with the latest RMI news and insights through periodic email communication an Egyptian alumna from Kristianstad University is determined to inspire change in the business world With a Bachelor of Commerce and a master’s in accounting and auditing – My dream is to become a researcher and lecturer Her choice of Sweden and Kristianstad was ideal with its renowned accounting department and serene learning environment Heba’s academic journey has been rewarding The master programme offered an inclusive yet intense curriculum Heba was nominated for the prestigious Global Swede Award reflecting the university’s appreciation – The methodological teaching and accounting knowledge gained from Kristianstad have been invaluable "Embrace challenges; Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker On a recent visit to Kristianstad, I met with Beni Sadriu from Kosovo and talked to him about what it is like to be an immigrant in Sweden today.  When visiting Kristianstad recently, I met Beni Sadriu—an emigrant from Kosovo. We met at the pool, where I was swimming and he works as a “badmästare," which is to say he teaches swimming lessons and water gymnastics, conducts baby swim classes and is in charge of the cash register at the front desk. I was struck by how fluent his Swedish was and asked if perhaps I could come back another day for an interview. After some initial reluctance, Beni agreed, and a few days later we met. Beni Sadriu is a tall man, with a strong, proud profile, and when he speaks he does so in the typical Scanian dialect, with just a hint of a foreign accent. His Swedish was very good, and I wondered when he first came here. “I’d spent part of the war* abroad and part here. Then I met my wife, who was born in Albania but grew up in Sweden. I met her in 1999. After filling out all the paperwork, I had to wait in Kosovo for 6 months before I was granted a visa and could join her in Sweden. I moved here in 2002.” By then Beni already knew a lot about Sweden: His brother lived here and he had explained how the Swedish system works, what the economy is like, what Beni could expect. His first impression wasn’t very exciting, however. He arrived in wintertime. “The weather was piss,” he says with a crooked smile. Beni had spent time abroad in Munich, Germany. Was Sweden very different? “Well, there was more life in Germany. But of course Munich is much bigger than Kristianstad.” “Most Swedes really are a bit cold,” he says after quite a long pause. “A bit stiff and quiet, you know. Back home you say hello when you meet someone, but here … you can’t do that, unless you know the person. But that’s alright. And most Swedes ease up a little when they drink.” Beni had just finished high school in Kosovo and had hopes of becoming a physical education teacher, when the war put a stop to his plans. “When I came to Sweden, I decided to really learn Swedish. A lot of immigrants don’t, they want to get a job right away, but what kind of jobs are there if you don’t speak the language? It was hard to learn Swedish, but I’d studied English in Kosovo and that helped. Also, I taught boxing right away when I came here and the kids I taught helped me a lot with my Swedish. It all comes down to what you are willing to do with your time in Sweden.” Beni’s wife spoke Swedish to him at home, to help speed up the learning process. Today they have three children ages 8, 4 and 9 months. “Yes, I do. I’ve a lot of family here, one brother and my parents. Another brother and my cousins are in Kosovo, but we go there every summer.” Beni doesn’t think he’ll move back. The economy in Kosovo isn’t very good and his children are happy in Sweden. And though he still has hopes of becoming a physical education teacher, he is happy with his work at the pool. I ask him about racism in Sweden today, if he has encountered any. “No, not really. You hear a lot about it, though. With the Sweden Democrats being strong here in the south. But there are so many immigrants here in Kristianstad, and many of them are married to Swedes. We do things together, we play soccer together, we box.…” Nobody’s ever told him to go back to his country, at least not in words. “Sure, you feel it sometimes. You feel it from how people look at you.” Beni thinks Swedish immigration policy is good. “All countries should be this open. I’ve lived in a country in war—I know what it’s like. You have to help those who are in need. Especially women and children.” He explains that he and his family celebrate Muslim and Albanian holidays and cook special dishes from “back home”. With pride he tells me that his mother’s Swedish is “quite good” after seven years in Sweden. Both his parents work in Kristianstad, though his father is about to retire. He thinks the system is what's best in Sweden. “When I studied here, I received financial help. But the Social Democrats were in power then—perhaps that has all changed, I don’t know. To me it’s OK with high taxes, because health care is practically free.” The only times he feels homesick for Kosovo is in winter. *The Yugoslav Wars were a series of wars, fought throughout the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1995. The wars were complex: characterized by bitter ethnic conflicts among the peoples of the former Yugoslavia, mostly between Serbs (and to a lesser extent, Montenegrins) on the one side and Croats and Bosniaks (and to a lesser degree, Slovenes) on the other; but also between Bosniaks and Croats in Bosnia (in addition to a separate conflict fought between rival Bosniak factions in Bosnia). Read our Privacy notice Three people have been hospitalised and a further three arrested after a shooting in Sweden with police reportedly uncertain whether there could be more casualties or perpetrators A “large police operation” was quickly established in the southern city of Kristianstad after multiple gunshots were heard at around 3:40pm on Tuesday A man in his 20s, one in his 30s and a woman in her 60s were treated for serious injuries, authorities said. Police were initially placed on guard at hospital for the victims’ protection. But it remained unclear on Tuesday evening whether they were the intended targets of the attack, or had any shared relationship with each other or with the suspected perpetrators. Three men were later arrested on Tuesday evening on suspicion of attempted murder, Sweden’s national broadcaster SVT reported, quoting a police spokesperson as saying that there could be more perpetrators involved. Police initially said that “several people” had been found with suspected gunshot wounds in “various locations” in the district of Nasby, with one crime scene close to a shopping centre. Officers reportedly feared there could be more casualties as some people had left the scene in private vehicles – one of them among the three now in hospital. “Now time has passed, we assume that it is about three people, at least for the moment,” spokesperson Richard Lundqvist was quoted as saying. Their injuries are reported to be serious, but not life-threatening. There were also reports about gunshots in the same area on Monday evening. Police were quoted as saying they had discovered bullet holes in a road sign, with no indication of any injuries. It comes amid a rise in gun violence in the Scandinavian nation, with a report this year from Sweden’s national council for crime prevention stating that it is the only European country where fatal shootings have significantly risen since 2000. The group blamed the rise in gun violence primarily on organised crime. When groundbreaking research projects come to an end when their funding expires critical research findings are left stranded on the precipice of action The Swedish city of Kristianstad sustained a lot of damage when it was hit by Storm Babet in late October. Most likely, the damage could have been significantly reduced with the help of findings from SEI’s case study in Kristianstad, a part of  RISC-KIT (Resilience-Increasing Strategies for Coasts – toolKIT) in part because the RISC-KIT project came to an end without enough funding to take its critical research findings and put them into action funding must focus more on how results from research can be applied In 2007, high waves and water levels on the beaches and dunes at Östra Sand and southern Äspet led to extensive erosion (Stadsbyggnadskontoret and C4 Teknik, 2007) This turning point marked the start of increasing threats from coastal hazards for the city of Kristianstad I and my fellow SEI research colleagues working on the project collaborated closely with the city’s residents and devised models to predict the impacts of coastal hazards on the city The results of our research were not only comprehensive but also remarkably accurate the models and findings produced by the project were accurate offering valuable insights on the future threats Kristianstad would likely face However, a crucial issue hindered the project’s impact and the researchers’ and city’s ability to act on the findings effectively. Despite accurate predictions and actionable recommendations the city of Kristianstad was left with a treasure trove of research findings but limited resources to act upon them Fast forward to last month: Storm Babet struck the coast of southern Sweden with strong winds and high-water levels causing significant damage to property and natural landscapes as well as disrupted travel and downed trees (see images) While the costs from Babet have not yet been calculated, the 800 natural hazards (storms, floods, erosion) that hit Kristianstad between 2015 and 2020 caused over SEK 23 million worth in damages (Svensk Försäkring, 2021) And Babet will not be the last to wreak havoc: the “extraordinary storm” is going to be more common with climate change Part of this lack of funding will impact the application of useful research results The story of Kristianstad serves as a stark reminder that well-documented research left without the necessary financial support remains unutilized and unable to fulfil its potential in safeguarding communities and the environment The lesson is clear: research does not end when a project’s timeline or funding comes to an end and mitigate the impacts of looming challenges like climate change there must be commitment to provide ongoing financial support to research projects Research on issues that have applied aspects that impact our daily lives especially as climate change changes the threats to our societies must evolve beyond academic publications and move toward a more action-oriented approach funders play a fundamental role in ensuring that projects do not come to a screeching halt when their timelines end they should provide the necessary support for researchers to implement their findings and The lesson from Kristianstad is a stark reminder of the critical need for continuity in research funding It’s a lesson we must take to heart in the pursuit of a better Sweden’s lowest point is just outside the city of Kristianstad at 2.41 metres below sea level (SMHI, 2014) Kristianstad is the biggest municipality in Skåne located at the lower end of the Helge River The municipality is a focal point for food and beverage production with over 1600 such companies and hundreds of other companies providing supporting services There are also several sites of regional importance which consists of the port facility and important industries; Ramsar sites with wetland areas of international value and UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserves; and areas important for tourism and recreation some of which are now permanent residences Get the latest updates and invitations to your inbox with SEI’s global newsletter The Swedish carrier VR Kristianstad has signed a contract for the delivery of 23 Solaris e-buses The order comprises 20 low-entry Urbino 15 electric buses (launched in 2020) and 3 low-floor Urbino 12 electric vehicles These will be the first ever zero-emission Solaris buses in Kristianstad Solaris electric buses in Kristianstad Solaris Bus & Coach has just signed another contract for the supply of electric buses The Swedish carrier VR Kristianstad has signed a contract for the delivery of 23 Solaris e-buses. Åkesson claims to have kicked the extremists out of the party, pulled up its roots in white-supremacist and neo-Nazi activism, and turned it into a slick electoral machine that has doubled its vote every four years, taking 13% in September’s election This self-image of the Sweden Democrats was challenged last weekend by the prime minister citing its early links with Keep Sweden Swedish and White Aryan Resistance Löfven, leader of the once mighty Social Democrats, now heads a lame-duck minority coalition with the Greens. He lashed out at his far-right nemesis as the political establishment scrambles to find a way of slowing the Sweden Democrat insurgency The most recent opinion poll by YouGov suggests the far right is riding high and could take as much as 18% of the vote in new elections in March Löfven’s “neo-fascist” attack sparked a storm of debate with critics saying that labelling the far right is irrelevant or dangerous But the prime minister also expressed a strength of feeling against the Sweden Democrats that is shared by many When it emerged on Friday that the party wants to lift a ban on recording the national origins of people in the criminal justice system the head of Sweden’s Bar Association said on Twitter they might as well put a badge on offenders’ jackets – in reference to the practice in Germany in the 1930s Lars-Åke, 55, a cleaner, voted for the Sweden Democrats because he approves of their policy of slashing immigration by 90% “There are too many refugees — so many Arabs it feels like I need to learn Arabic,” he says He admits to a concern that the party is still “too extreme”as a result of its shady past: “They used to have some very bad people and a lot of them quit is weighing up whether to vote for the centre left or for the Sweden Democrats “They are neither racist nor fascist; they just talk about something no one else talks about – we have a problem with immigrants,” the student said Politicians and the media in Sweden have maintained a stance unique in Europe in shunning the Sweden Democrats excluding them from political debate and directing fierce criticism at anyone who suggests that the country’s asylum policy is a problem Sweden currently accepts more than twice as many refugees per capita as any other of the 34 member states of the OECD one in five voters chose the Sweden Democrats in September and almost everyone has friends or workmates who are sympathisers Even the party’s opponents hesitate to call it fascist “This is not a neo-fascist party,” said Dr Anders Sannerstedt “As a party they have cut their links to their unpleasant roots There might still be unpleasant individuals but the party programme has no traces of the white supremacy movement.” Surveys appear to show that the number of Swedes with strongly anti-immigration values is coming down gradually head of the Kreab communications firm in Sweden “What has happened instead is that anti-immigrant opinion has become mobilised and people who put their anti-immigrant feelings second to other concerns are now allowing it to determine how they vote,” Uvell says However, academic research this month suggests that Sweden Democrat voters hold “drastically more negative views” about Muslims than other voter groups and are motivated “purely by anti-minority sentiments” rather than the anti-establishment populism in which it is cloaked “The risk is that in a society where the Sweden Democrats have a greater and greater say and immigration is portrayed as basically a problem racist ideas and actions become more normalised,” says Daniel Poohl who says racism and intolerance are a basic part of the party’s identity The local paper in Kristianstad recently had to suspend its practice of allowing online comments under articles because there was so much race hate said in an email: “I think it is the most absurd statement a Swedish PM has made in a very very long time.” The party had made it “abundantly clear” that its core values included a belief in democracy It is not just their roots that put the Sweden Democrats at the radical end of the spectrum of far-right Nordic populism – echoes of its past can be heard in its political statements now One party ideologue wrote about “the great decisive battle for our civilisation A theme of Åkesson’s election speech in August was that Islamism was “the Nazism and Communism of our time” and must be approached with “the same disgust and much stronger resistance” “These guys really care about ideology,” says Henrik Arnstad author of research on fascism cited by the prime minister in defence of his outburst “You can easily find ultra-nationalism in their politics which is incompatible with liberal democracy They want to exclude certain people from the nation.” Anti-racists and the media have collaborated to expose the party’s extremism revealing that members had posted racist comments anonymously on far-right websites and but these revelations appear to have done little to dent the party’s popularity the Sweden Democrats’ group leader on Kristianstad council rails against “the huge number of immigrants” and says the country has “the most irresponsible immigration policy in western Europe” although he is unable to say how many immigrants live in Kristianstad “Swedish people don’t feel at home any more,” he said “The problem we have is basically with the Muslims so much of their culture is based on Islam.” Nilsson acknowledged – but had no explanation for – the fact that the vote for his party is higher in isolated Nilsson fears that a higher birth rate among Muslim immigrants will eventually see them in the majority with the inevitable dilution of the nation’s “Swedishness” although he struggles to define this notion But his biggest concern is that the mainstream parties might adopt much of the Sweden Democrats’ immigration policies: “That could be disastrous for our continued growth,” he said an overwhelmingly immigrant area in northern Kristianstad there are few white faces among the Iraqis Syrians and Somalis who have made it their home a bus driver who came from Somalia in the 1990s is offended at any suggestion that the Sweden Democrats are not a racist party They are against the very existence of people like me and want us out of the country,” he says he feels confident that he has the same rights as anyone else “They can’t touch me or my family,” he says “The problems will start if they ever come to power.” Residents of operations and enhanced the processor’s ambitions towards certifying the plant for export to China The move means that its Kristianstad plant will now become Sweden’s largest pig slaughterhouse and one of the largest private employers in the area The processor revealed in June last year that it had invested €7m in modernising the entire production line at the plant to improve its animal welfare standards and enhance food safety. Several of HKScan’s senior employees, including executive vice president for its Swedish operation Sofia Hyleen Toresson and CEO Tero Hemmilä, were present during the opening ceremony. Commenting on the opening, Hyleen Toresson said the investment would allow the business to produce even more sustainable meat products for its customers. “Not only have we upgraded the whole production process, the investment has also enabled important energy savings and reduced water consumption,” said Hyleen Toresson. “Altogether, this is an important part of our strategic development and our entire value chain, from farm to fork.” Meanwhile, Hemmilä said: “This is a state-of-the-art project and an investment that both improves our work environment and the quality of the food and our products. It also enhances efficiency in the production line.” HKScan to cut staff in bid to reduce costs06-Feb-2019By Aidan FortuneFinnish meat processor HKScan has revealed plans to cut up to 220 jobs across its workforce as part of a cost-efficiency drive. felt like his education and work experience were not enough Now he has found a way to close the gap – through the Masters Programme in International Business and Marketing at Kristianstad University Joshua Maine says that the programme at Kristianstad Univiersity has exceeded his expectations.–It's a very intense programme – We have a very intense schedule right now We manage to catch Joshua Main in the library during a short lunch break between lectures he is following the Masters Programme in International Business and Marketing at Kristianstad University his primary goal was to get the name of a Swedish institution on his CV Joshua Maine got his first job in architectural stone masonry so it came naturally to try to get a job as soon as I left school I developed more interest in the business side of it they decided to move to her native country in 2012 Joshua Maine was studying on distance through Open University to achieve a bachelor of Science in business and marketing he was studying full time and at the same time working full time for an online media company he describes the difficulties in finding a job in his specific field there is a different attitude to education there is a perception that Sweden and the UK are culturally close but when it came to finding secure employment my education and experience as a foreigner weren't sufficient I felt I had to show that I had come through the Swedish system – that´s why I applied for this programme the contents of the programme have exceeded his expectations there are students from all over the world he perceives the classroom situation as very Scandinavian the students were applying to the companies where they wanted to do their WIL (Work Integrated Learning) Joshua Maine and some of the other students got the opportunity to cooperate with Absolut Vodka in Åhus They had a meeting with senior employees to discuss how they could help the company from a research perspective they have worked with the paper which was handed in two weeks ago Joshua Maine and his course companions will start to work with the final thesis I already know that I have a more appealing CV I notice a bigger interest for me as an were alerted to the school in the town of Kristianstad shortly after 9am on Monday after receiving a report that at least one person had received injuries from a knife "He entered our classroom with a advance her career Aisha Sanni from Nigeria is working on a master's degree in Kristianstad the opportunity to attend Kristianstad University as part of the Swedish Institute’s Scholarships for Global Professionals program couldn’t have come at a better time – I actually got this scholarship at the point where I was at the lowest in my life says. It came at a point when I'd lost all confidence in myself There’s a constant presence of gender inequality in Nigeria where many professional women with talent and education can find themselves frustratingly stuck and unable to advance their careers And sometimes you will question if you are good enough to obtain those top positions She felt that her best chance at breaking through the glass ceiling was to further her education especially within an international context Aisha Sanni already earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting so a master’s degree in business administration from an international program made sense But she didn’t have the financial means to do it.  one of my friends was awarded the Swedish Institute scholarship And that was how I learned about the scholarship she made her friend walk her through the whole process of applying – showing her the website and going over the information She not only realized that she met all the qualifications to apply but that she was drawn to a specific degree program that was eligible for the scholarship at Kristianstad University: A Master’s Degree in Business Administration Aisha wasn't that familiar with Sweden or Kristianstad. And she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when she applied nor when she was accepted by the program and first arrived in Kristianstad in 2020 It wasn’t until she began her coursework that she realized that the teaching and learning style was not what she was used to.      – The education system in Nigeria is far different to what they have in Sweden Her previous higher education experiences had featured multiple course loads with a focus on learning through the memorization of lessons and facts with lots of exams and cramming Aisha found herself in an education program where students focus on one course at a time with lesson plans built around real-world practicality And she was expected to not only engage in discussions with professors and lecturers but fellow students as well and even admits to feeling some of that old questioning self-doubt. At first But her drop in self-confidence didn’t last – I struggled initially; that’s a reality it’s been the style of learning that has made her experience so profound From the engagement with educators and collaboration with fellow students to the mix of theory and practical work examples she says the experience has given her a deep understanding of the subject beyond simple rote memorization And Aisha's postgraduate work has more than affected her thoughts on the subject matter and I'm seeing myself in a better perspective than I used to – I am very grateful to the Swedish Institute for giving me this opportunity It makes me feel that I have more than enough talents to continue to do work It makes me feel I'm not as low as I think I used to be back home She still has one more semester left at Kristianstad University she may join another program to keep learning in Sweden.  – I have a lot of business ideas that have to do with sustainability So I hope to become a CEO in the future in my own business This scholarship is a great way to fully fund both your tuition fees and living costs during your master's studies at Kristianstad University.  The scholarship is available for citizens from many countries for master programs starting in autumn semester and fully covers your tuition fees to the Swedish university you are attending You will also receive a monthly payment to cover your living expenses throughout the scholarship.  Swedish Institute scholarships Other scholarships at Kristianstad University Kristianstad working together for many years and are also married “We’ve had two courses,” says Christina Lind-Halldén “One is a genetics course and the other a cellular and molecular biology methodology course There are no textbooks for the practical components of these courses so we spent over ten years developing a comprehensive set of materials that are adapted to the students’ needs.” “The main benefit of this material is that it contains a lot of guidance on what the students should actually do to achieve completion as quickly and economically as possible,” adds Christer Halldén “We made videos and created a lot of documents and these were posted on the course pages and the students given access to them,” says Lind-Halldén the couple was informed by the department management that they would no longer be teaching the two courses it was remarkably similar to the one we had when we held the courses It was very strange that those who took over had exactly the same course structure as we had had,” says Lind-Halldén “There were some new PowerPoints with the same content as our old ones but presented using another teacher’s voice such as what to think about when making calculations were used in the introductions to the courses last autumn So we contacted Michael Svedemar at SULF,” says Lind-Halldén As Christina Lind-Halldén and Christer Halldén are members of different trade unions the negotiations on behalf of Saco-S were conducted by both SULF and Naturvetarna the union representing professional scientists “There was a protracted dialogue,” says Svedemar “There was a lot of discussion about whether the material met the threshold of originality and the university claimed that it is standard practice there that any material that teachers publish on the learning platform may be used freely SULF’s view was that the university had violated the teachers’ exemption regarding intellectual property rights the payment is listed as compensation,” says Christina Lind-Halldén the settlement stipulates that the material may no longer be used in education at the university “The fact that the teachers received compensation indicates in a sense that the university admits that it was in the wrong,” says Svedemar “We don’t usually comment on individual HR matters,” wrote university director Åsa Vännman in an email we will not be giving any interviews either.” Alongside the issue of copyright infringement there is a practical pedagogical consequence “It is a huge problem to take over someone else’s material if you don’t have the skills to explain the content clearly and effectively,” says Lind-Halldén and she points out that the pass rate on the courses’ regular exams has fallen Universitetsläraren has requested the student completion rate statistics for both courses and these show a decrease from 80 to 60 per cent on one course and from 88 to 66 per cent on the other compared with when Christina Lind-Halldén and Christer Halldén taught them “Then we noticed that our laboratory records had also been changed so that in some cases there were errors in them,” says Lind-Halldén But even if the university has acknowledged “in a sense” to Christina Lind-Halldén and Christer Halldén that it acted improperly “It’s in your head all the time,” says Lind-Halldén we would never have made the videos in the first place We would never have posted the material online That meant that our employer was able to take the material and then use it.” Christina Lind-Halldén is now on sick leave and Christer Halldén has chosen to accept a severance payment from the university to terminate his employment A ‘rule of thumb’ principle of interpretation has grown up with regard to intellectual property created within the framework of employment This means that the employer normally has the right of use for what is created For teachers and researchers at universities and colleges a different principle of interpretation applies to such intellectual property and means that
