memorial stone dedicated to Burton at the Gyllene Rasten restaurant/bar in Dörarp (outside Ljungby) was unveiled It was 20 years earlier that Cliff died just over the road from where Gyllene Rasten is located The organizers tell Guitar World: "We primarily want to honor Cliff Burton, who died so tragically in the middle of his career, and talk about who he was as a person and a musician. Our second main purpose is to create a meeting place for all those who seek the memorial site in the small community of Dörarp. We want to continue the fine work that the fans started when they started raising funds to make Cliff's memorial stone." Ljungby historian Krister Ljungberg, who is involved in opening the museum, told SVT in 2021 that he had received message of support from METALLICA fans from around the world. Among them was a video from fans in Mexico who asked how they could help build the museum. "I'm not a huge fan of METALLICA, but I usually say that I'm the biggest fan of METALLICA fans," Ljungberg said. "I really love these people; they are absolutely amazing." A newly started association, Bergabygden's culture and tourism, was awarded SEK 300,000 (approximately $32,000) from the Swedish National Heritage Board, a government agency responsible for world heritage sites and other national heritage monuments and historical environments, to help start the museum. The museum's launch event will take place on Saturday, May 14. Cliff was asked to join METALLICA in 1982 after the band saw him perform with his group at the time, TRAUMA. The bassist was not willing to move to Los Angeles, where METALLICA was based, so they decided to move to the San Francisco area so that he would join. Burton played on METALLICA's first three studio albums — "Kill 'Em All", "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" — and co-wrote classic songs like "Ride The Lightning", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Fade To Black", "Creeping Death" and "Master Of Puppets". Burton's initial replacement in the group was Jason Newsted, who stayed in the lineup until 2001. Robert Trujillo joined in 2003 and remains in the band to this day. February 10, 2018 was proclaimed "Cliff Burton Day" by Alameda County supervisors. The late METALLICA bassist would have turned 56 years old on that date had he lived. Asked if Hetfield was personally comfortable with the more "alternative" image and music METALLICA made on those albums, the singer/guitarist replied: "No, no, not at all. There’s some great, great songs on there but my opinion is that all of the imagery and stuff like that was not necessary. And the amount of songs that were written was… it diluted the potency of the poison of METALLICA. And I think Cliff would have agreed with that." Burton's huge talent and achievements were chronicled in book form with the 2009 global publication of "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton", written by U.K.-based author Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press. The foreword was provided by METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cliff Burton Museum (@cliffburtonmuseum) Such an honour to be part of the opening of the Cliff Burton Museum in Ljungby special thanks to @cliffburtonfamily to allow the board to share Cliff’s legacy to.. We visited the museum in Sweden dedicated to late Metallica legend Cliff Burton the scene appears not to have changed: if you consult the original photos of the bend in the road where the bus spun and fell over crushing Cliff as he fell through the window it’s obvious that everything is pretty much the same Well, that’s not quite true: what’s there now that wasn’t there 36 years ago is a full-blown Cliff Burton Museum which opened on May 14 and is now a meeting point for metalheads who want to pay tribute The best way to get there is to fly to Copenhagen or Gothenburg and drive the two-hour journey using sat-nav but public transport is possible too.  It’s worth making the effort, particularly if you’re a Metallica fan. Housed in a small, detached building in the grounds of a hotel, it contains tons of memorabilia, including a replica of the drum kit that Lars Ulrich played on Cliff’s last tour donated by Mexican fanclub president Aelfredo LeRoux films and memorabilia collected by fans.  “This is a dream come true for us,” says Aelfredo who has flown here with his wife Terry Rodriguez from Mexico City a 32-hour trip that only true devotees would make “We’ve been here many times in recent years but Cliff’s legacy continues to grow as the years pass It’s so important for Metallica’s worldwide fans to be able to celebrate his memory here.” Ten minutes’ drive away from the museum is the memorial stone erected in 2006 by a group of Swedish fans called Cliff In Our Minds and the owners of a nearby pub The stone sits 100 metres from the bend in the road where Metallica’s bus driver lost control Investigations on the subject of Metallica have largely failed to come up with any solid reason why the bus should have crashed: black ice was suggested but has been mostly discredited while the driver’s identity has remained hidden.  This lack of closure is partly what attracts thousands of Metallica fans to the memorial stone as well as bands passing by; you can read the thoughts of Robb Flynn of Machine Head on the subject in his blog of February 7 The installation of the stone in 2006 gave the visiting fans a tangible destination where they could pay their respects more fully realised location for those who want to learn about Cliff.  Sign up below to get the latest from Metal Hammer “The Cliff Burton Museum has been created as a meeting place for the fans who visit the memorial stone,” says Krister Ljungberg who initiated the museum project with his wife Anna- Lena Ljungberg and their associate Magnus Strömberg “The museum’s board has had a fantastic collaboration with members of Cliff In Our Minds and also members of the Mextallica chapter Cliff’s family will also contribute items to the exhibition.” (Image credit: Tom Johansson)(Image credit: Tom Johansson)(Image credit: Tom Johansson)(Image credit: Tom Johansson)(Image credit: Tom Johansson)What makes the stone and museum so mind-blowing is that the funds to set them up have come from the local fans and tourism department and nowhere do we witness that dedication more clearly than at the launch event when a tribute band called Metaholica play Cliff-era songs for a gathering of more than 1,000 visitors Tony Asplund of Cliff In Our Minds explains to the crowd how the memorial stone came about “It was a true collaboration that started out as an idea between a few friends,” he tells us the stone has become a real tribute to Cliff The museum’s function is to give people a fuller picture of who he was and to attempt to demystify the accident with testimonies from the emergency responder personnel.” I also give a speech on why Cliff continues to matter to us while his friend Frank Bello of Anthrax – who opened for Metallica on that final tour – joins us on Zoom to share some emotional stories about his late friend We’re treated to a note-perfect rendition of Cliff’s famous solo (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth by Mexican YouTuber Kello Gonzalez and then it’s time to toast Cliff at the nearby Hotel Terraza in Ljungby – the very same hotel where James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett stayed after the crash.  and while Metaholica play a second set and a lot of strong Swedish beer is consumed there’s a sense that Cliff would have thoroughly approved.  Thanks to Krister and Anna-Lena Ljungberg. The man who was asked to replace James Hetfield as singer in Metallica – and turned it down The year started out quite well for Filip Eriksson on a team that would become LeMat trophy winners at the end of the season He scored a goal in the pre-season games and received good minutes in the first two regular games of the season Eriksson got injured in an SHL game and broke a metacarpal in his hand as he struck the boards hard and his exposure before the draft was limited He returned to Växjö’s SHL team just before the playoffs and he is considered a Swedish champion after playing a grand total of two minutes in the playoffs 2004Shoots: LeftPosition: CentreHeight: 6’0″Weight: 172 lbs.Team: Växjö Lakers (SHL) and a good understanding of the game overall He was always a small player on his teams growing up and had to rely on smarts and speed to play the game he chose to stay with his local team for an extra year as Troja-Ljungby outperformed expectations in both age groups where Eriksson was present – the U18s and U20s – during the 2021-22 season but it means that he now is more of a lanky player rather than a small one and he will still need to fill out over the next season but he could be moved to the wing for his first real season in the SHL It is at centre that he finds the balance between creativity and effectiveness with ease and once he gets everything else in order the development can go quickly Where Eriksson needs to improve is in the physical attributes and one could argue that he is half a year behind due to the hand injury and once he has filled out he should benefit from both the added weight and height One would think it would be the same way with his shot as there will be new movement and a new mass to work with The positive thing is that Växjö is a deep team and getting even close to the SHL is good in that regard The fact that Växjö has decided to sign him to a rookie contract even if he hasn’t played the customary 100 minutes of SHL hockey speaks to the faith they have in him as a player In an interview posted on the team’s own website general manager Henrik Evertsson explains the decision “We saw Filip during pre-season games with our SHL team and we are convinced that he has a big hockey future ahead of him It is rare to see such a young player have that understanding of the game at that age.” The rookie contract is signed until the end of the 2024-25 season It is clear that the Lakers organization considers Eriksson part of their SHL team for next season He will start fighting for the 12th jersey but Champions Hockey League action to start the year means that he should get early opportunities with the Lakers at a high level he would follow a similar path to Victor Stjernborg who has had the time to mature in the system and hasn’t been rushed but rather developed and been given a chance to grow with the experience and expectations Overall this is a safe pick from the Canadiens There is clear upside in the pick and he seems pretty sure to reach an SHL level The question is how far he can go from there When Eriksson signed his new SHL contract in March he said it was a dream come true Another dream came true during the last minutes of this year’s draft By DAVID JONES their chilblained hands hovering nervously beside holstered pistols a band of rookie soldiers face down an enemy platoon They are among an extraordinary number of citizens now clamouring to join the Home Guard as Sweden - newly enrolled into Nato this week - prepares for a scenario deemed unthinkable after the Cold War ended: a full-scale Russian attack when 29,000 Swedes applied to join up – more than six times the usual number such is the desire of ordinary Swedes to do their bit that the Home Guard has been forced to take on extra administrative staff to handle the logjam of applications Compare this with the dire situation in Britain where the strength of both the reserve and regular armies is falling largely because of public apathy and underfunding Britain’s need for security is hardly less pressing than that of the Swedes – as Defence Secretary Grant Shapps pointed out this week when backing calls led by the Mail for military spending to be increased from 2.27 to 3 per cent of GDP where blue and yellow national flags are waved with gusto again and nationalism is no longer a dirty word who are out of work the very mention of reintroducing national service to increase the Army’s strength from just 75,000 to 125,000 (the minimum number of troops we need to maintain security according to military experts) invokes howls of outrage Bunker owner Kenneth Clausen with a mannequin wearing a nuclear outfit in his bunker in the town of Ljungby Daily Mail man David Jones in the heart  of the the event of a nuclear attack Witness the paroxysms of anger recently aimed towards Army chief General Sir Patrick Sanders when he dared to suggest that we should recruit a big well-trained ‘citizen army’ (he stopped short of calling for a return to conscription) Sweden already operates a system of ‘total civil defence’ This holds everyone between the ages of 16 and 70 jointly responsible for protecting the country when its way of life is under threat individuals and even religious groups can be called up to maintain essential services such as medical and food provision and care for children and the elderly moves to restore the former strength of the army reserve – which could have quickly mobilised 900,000 fighters to meet any attack from the old Soviet Union – are well under way Sweden’s regular army will also be boosted by increasing its contingent of conscripts who already account for ten per cent of its military personnel - although judging by the prevailing mood there will be no need to force many Swedes to serve their country regardless of class or ethnicity - to the vengeful and expansionist enemy looming on their eastern flank Their sense of sacrifice was epitomised by Lina Sighurdh I am very thankful and grateful to be a Swedish citizen,’ replied the master’s degree student (who is rather handily studying Russian) when I asked her why she had enlisted Swelling with pride in her newly issued uniform she added: ‘I feel joining the Home Guard and helping the national defence is a way to uphold our liberal values in the face of extremism.’ Her remarks might almost have been scripted Other recruits offered similarly heartfelt reasons for leaving comfortable homes and jobs to undertake the tough which aims to teach them the skills of forest warfare – the type of conflict that might ensue should Russian troops invade so I don’t think we are going to start a war,’ said Rebecca Minarik ‘But I feel we may have to defend ourselves Could she envisage one of these countries invading Sweden Listening to these young Swedes pledging to spill blood for their country was almost surreal at times were the placard-waving peaceniks who once took to Stockholm’s streets with their ban-the-bomb slogans and anti-American slogans Swedish army officers would never have specified the nationality of the soldiers engraved on those shooting targets the Swedes are done with all that mealy-mouthed appeasement As prime minister Ulf Kristersson said this week his country’s admission to Nato – formalised in a flag-raising ceremony in Washington and cemented as Swedish troops were dispatched to the Arctic Circle to take part in the alliance’s biggest joint exercise when I asked Lieutenant Adolfsson who his new charges were supposed to be firing at they are carrying Kalashnikovs (the weapon of choice for the Russian army) so you can make up your own mind,’ he smiled mirthlessly Then he added: ‘It may not be [politically] correct to say they are Russians They will ask me if the Russians are coming here and I can’t just pretend everything is fine The huge subterranean living space spans two floors Kenneth Clausen outside his house in Ljungby It is up for sale but seemed overvalued at its brochure price of 16 million Swedish krona (£1.2million) which could safeguard up to 44 people from radiation poisoning for several months The fear that Putin might attempt to annex Sweden may seem unlikely particularly given his chastening venture into Ukraine Conflicts between the two countries date back 1,000 years the then-mighty Swedish empire waged war on the Novgorod Republic a wealthy independent state in the north of Russia aiming to seize its lands and convert it to Catholicism Early skirmishes were usually won by the Swedes but that changed under Peter the Great at the turn of the 18th century the imperialist tsar emerged victorious from the Great Northern War a titanic struggle that claimed more than 500,000 lives on both sides It ended with Russia a great European superpower and the Swedish empire in terminal decline And since Putin has hailed Peter as Russia’s greatest ruler he may harbour dreams of emulating his hero while Sweden’s prime minister insists the country is far safer inside Nato some fear its membership will only make it more of a target for Putin’s expansionism the Kremlin has pledged to retaliate with ‘military-technical’ measures not least because one of Sweden’s many islands lies just 150 miles from the Russian port of Kaliningrad and could be used as the base for a Nato blockade of the Baltic Though the Swedes are fired by patriotic sentiment there is a frisson of anxiety among the population following the government’s advice to stockpile supplies of food and fresh water and take other steps to allow many weeks of enforced self-reliance there has been an upsurge in demand for underground shelters capable of withstanding an atomic blast and offering protection from fall-out this is sparking a new type of entrepreneur recently left his job in IT to start a company designing and building all manner of nuclear bunkers from basic models with a starting price of around £40,000 to high-end ones costing several times that sum and – in an unintentionally inapt turn of phrase – describes the success of his new venture as ‘mind-blowing’ when Sweden’s declared policy of non-allegiance failed to assuage fears of Soviet missile strikes an astonishing number of nuclear bunkers – some 64,000 – were excavated beneath villages Some were capable of harbouring just a few key people; the biggest hewn into Katarina mountain in Stockholm and now used as an underground car park When communism collapsed and the threat from the East seemed over some local authorities sold their shelters cheaply to private buyers these same councils are now keen to buy them back Officials in the small southern town of Eslov offloaded their shelter for just £75,000 the owners were finalising its resale – to another municipality – for more than £800,000 double their original asking price and more than ten times the amount they paid This at a time when the rest of Sweden’s property market is suffering the effects of a protracted recession and 4.5 per cent interest rates Retired impresario Kenneth Clausen’s up-for-sale home is a converted schoolhouse on a quiet country road outside Ljungby a historic market town with 16,000 residents it looked handsome enough with its grey facade but it seemed overvalued at its brochure price of 16 million Swedish krona (£1.2million) Tell that to the army of prospective buyers – almost 500 of them not only from all parts of Sweden but as far afield as London and Berlin – who have made inquiries about it in the two weeks since it came on the market The reason for their interest lies behind a forbidding iron door It opens into a huge subterranean living space spanning two floors it is reputedly capable of withstanding a direct hit from a 1,100lb bomb and safeguarding up to 44 people from radiation poisoning for several months with its Cold War kitsch decor and black and white photographs of flashpoint places such as Checkpoint Charlie is an eerie experience: like turning the clock back 60 years There are original cartoon drawings instructing nuclear survivors to shower and change into hazard suits before entering; an outdated intercom with links to vital civic services; submarine-style bunks and washrooms; vast tanks for fresh water and diesel; an electricity generator speakeasy-style lounge with a well-stocked bar this is where the last few people left in Sweden and it’s crazy again now,’ laments owner Mr Clausen who declines to say how little he paid for the bunker for fear of ‘embarrassing’ the local council Unapologetic for profiting from Sweden’s crisis he plans to use the million-plus sale proceeds to travel around Europe for a year interest in his shelter came mainly from sightseers and boozy weekenders who used it as a quirky man cave desperate ‘preppers’ – convinced the apocalypse is coming and planning to do everything they can to ride it out – want to restore it to original purpose One local woman pleaded with Mr Clausen to let her stay in it because the terror of an impending Russian attack made them afraid to sleep in their own beds He reassured her that an attack on this rural part of Sweden the shelter has already quadrupled the value of the house and he expects bids to rise considerably higher is that Putin would never drop a nuclear bomb on Sweden Puppets" — and co-wrote classic songs like "Ride The Lightning" Burton's initial replacement in the group was Jason Newsted Robert Trujillo joined in 2003 and remains in the band to this day 2018 was proclaimed "Cliff Burton Day" by Alameda County supervisors The late METALLICA bassist would have turned 56 years old on that date had he lived Cliff's huge talent and achievements were chronicled in book form with the 2009 global publication of "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton" written by U.K.-based author Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press The foreword was provided by METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett A museum honoring Cliff's legacy opened in May 2022 in the Ljungby municipality along with interviews and photos from the first photographer at the crash site Lennart Wennberg of the Swedish newspaper Expressen There is also a film of recollections from first responders at the crash scene as well as a stage that recreates METALLICA's last performance with Burton in Stockholm with copies of the bass and drum kit he and drummer Lars Ulrich used plus a poster with Burton's last autograph Ulrich spoke to Seattle's KISW 99.9 radio station about Burton's tragic loss when METALLICA's tour bus skidded on ice while the group was on tour in Scandinavia and Cliff was thrown out the window and crushed Lars said: "We were so shocked and stunned that we didn't know what hit us kids in their early 20s who get ambushed with that type of thing We weren't mature enough or seasoned in life enough to know how to deal with this other than just to sort of almost hide behind the alcohol and compartmentalized it So the next few months were very difficult but we just put the blinders on and started auditioning bass players And we knew in our hearts that Cliff would be the first one to kick us in the ass and tell us to keep going And so there was no moping; we just kept going the best we knew how to." METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was asked in an interview with TeamRock what he thinks Burton might have thought about the drastic changes in its look and sound that METALLICA made through the 1990s and early 2000s with albums like "Load" I certainly would have thought there would have been some resistance I think the 'Black Album' was a great album and I appreciate the fact that we did have the balls to do that… I would certainly think that the 'Load' and 'Reload' [era] I would have had an ally that was very against it all — the reinvention or the U2 version of METALLICA." Asked if Hetfield was personally comfortable with the more "alternative" image and music METALLICA made on those albums great songs on there but my opinion is that all of the imagery and stuff like that was not necessary And the amount of songs that were written was… it diluted the potency of the poison of METALLICA And I think Cliff would have agreed with that." He also appeared in three playoff games for HC Davos The late NHL draft pick took major strides in his development across the top two leagues in Sweden Filip Eriksson had been out injured for most of his draft season; a battle along the boards in his second SHL game concluded with a broken scaphoid bone He returned to be part of the Le Mat Trophy-winning Växjö Lakers team at the end of the season Eriksson was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in Round 6 of the 2023 NHL Draft At that time there was next to nothing known about the player who had stayed an extra year with his home team Troja-Ljungby instead of moving over to Växjö at an earlier stage that year in Troja-Ljungby was a season for the ages and more scouts really should have seen the potential Speaking to a few people in Sweden’s vast hockey community a few things stood out: Växjö had tried to recruit Eriksson for a few years they signed him to a contract when he got injured even if he hadn’t played many minutes on the SHL team and both assistant GM Patrik Hall and coach Jörgen Jönsson couldn’t stop talking about Eriksson’s qualities as a player The question was if this was a a team building up a player or if it was something that the scouting community as a whole had missed This season started out quite well for Eriksson his underlying numbers were still on an expected level or even better in regard to his draft position since he outproduced other forwards from the same draft in the SHL Unger-Sörum and Fisker-Mølgaard all got time on the power play Another thing his peers received was the chance to play in the World Juniors (or WJC Division IA in Mølgaard’s case) while Eriksson got to play in the SHL instead I can’t really see an offensive role for Eriksson in Sweden’s silver medal-winning team He wouldn’t have gotten a role where he could have succeeded but rather he would have become a role player and therefore his time in the SHL was probably more important for his development The return of injured players to the Växjö lineup and an early exit in the Champions Hockey League to Genève-Servette meant that ice time was limited in the SHL for the Canadiens prospect As hinted before the season by coach Jönsson to Eyes On The Prize Växjö started to look at an opportunity for Eriksson to go on loan to a team in a lower league where he could play all situations The team that could offer the best solution was the Nybro Vikings Most important was the ‘Hockey Professor’ Tommy Samuelsson at the helm Few coaches in Sweden have the same pedigree as Samuelsson even if he coaches a smaller team at this time Nybro could also offer all the opportunities that Erkisson needed in his development: ice time and a top-six spot that a higher-placed team could not have offered Eriksson grabbed the opportunity with both hands He scored against teams at the top of the table Nybro benefited from Samuelsson’s coaching and Eriksson’s production and got into the playoff proper via a ‘play-in’ series against Almtuna facing the top seed in the quarter-final meant an early exit for Eriksson even if he played well and produced against Brynäs as well his time in Sweden’s second division was a success not only point-wise but again with regard to the underlying numbers holding his own against players more highly regarded and on better teams Keeping up the pace in regard to points per 60 minutes played with first-rounder Otto Stenberg is impressive Stenberg’s team had an easier opponent but still managed an upset in the quarter-finals won the league by 17 points and earned the promotion to the SHL Eriksson definitely faced a better opponent In a surprising exit for a red-hot Rögle in the SHL semifinals Eriksson was one of the best players for Växjö His two goals and overall strong play in the third and fourth games in the series stood out and gives an insight of his development this year Once you have scored your first goal, it is easy to score your second.#Habs Filip Eriksson ties the game with his second goal of the night, with four min to go #GoHabsGo pic.twitter.com/m7kjlOC2q7 scout and TV expert points out Eriksson’s hockey sense be it at five-on-five or on the power play His sees situations and openings before they happen actively searching for areas that are open ahead of the puck being delivered there giving himself a free move into the dangerous area before the pass comes in crisp passes into high-danger areas and onto the blade of his teammates Nybro used him on the half-wall as a power-play hub with his passes serving as the base Växjö used him more in the central spot in their 1-3-1 setup shifting him form the centre position down to the crease at times The move gave him the chance to use his quick release and strong shot to finish off plays but also his hockey IQ to go east-west and screen the goalie While it didn’t pay off to the degree that Växjö wanted because it’s another strength Eriksson has It is quick and comes with uncanny precision but he has a wicked slapshot that can be released when the opportunity arises His physical game is a point of weakness mostly due to his age at this time He needs time to build up his body even if his balance is better than average for his age in both leagues he played in This also results in a discrepancy in his play with and without the puck It seems that he isn’t as comfortable cutting inside with the puck as he is without it but doesn’t really exploit defenceman who are too passive or too aggressive with a quick cut across the circles This could be something that he will incorporate more as he gets stronger and more comfortable against seasoned professionals especially when he played with Nybro in HockeyAllsvenskan Even if it looked like he was cheating a bit at times his coach said that was with his good grace and a tactic they wanted to use at those times Eriksson took the defensive responsibility to shut down passing lanes and went hard into blocking shots often getting there on time thanks to his good reads The question is how it stands up in the SHL over a full season next year but both Eriksson coach Jönsson see him as a centre but it was his his spring semester that brought out his offence and playmaking ability Looking at the data collected by NLIceData it is clear that Eriksson was too good for HockeyAllsvenskan the NHL points equivalency (NHLe) correlates with data from both the SHL and HockeyAllsvenskan The difference will be the confidence he brings into the season next year and the bigger role he will be given in Växjö It is evident that he has the trust of coach Jönsson even if he didn’t make it into the NHL long-term Both Jönsson and Eriksson base their game on smarts and being cool under pressure to deliver when the game is on the line it is a team that will still strive for a deep run in the playoffs I expect Eriksson to be used on the second power-play unit and get third-line minutes though I could see him end up on a second line if the pieces fall exactly right He builds his game on being smart and that can get you far but he will need to produce to stay high up in Växjö’s lineup I think it will be a year too early for him to really produce in the SHL which had been set aside as emergency shelter for refugees The school building in Kånna, south of Ljungby, was totally destroyed by the blaze.
