I spent an afternoon shopping for IKEA sleeper sofas so you didn't have to
Let's talk what I liked (and didn't like) about each
For quick-ship convenience and do-it-yourself assembly, there is nothing like IKEA
The Swedish house and home retailer is known for a lot of things
it's a great place to shop for most things
Things like sofas — larger pieces of furniture where comfort is a top priority — get a bit tricky, though. There are some real gems here (especially during an IKEA sale)
but there are also some pieces editors and buyers would advise against
I find sofa beds to be particularly difficult to suss out; it's one thing to sleep on an IKEA sofa
but it's another when your guest is expecting a bed-like experience
The good news: I've spent 100+ hours researching
and interviewing experts regarding the myriad things that take a sofa from good to great
These convos have had less to do with sleepers and more to do with overall construction — but to mitigate this narrow gap
I also spent an afternoon inside IKEA sitting
and lying on as many IKEA sofa beds as I could
To garner at least a cursory understanding of each sleeper's pros and cons
and nab a few in-store images for you product imagery skeptics (don't worry
The frame build and fill choice for each of these couches is pretty similar — a mix of plywood
Construction-wise it doesn't seem you're getting something much different from one piece to another
But where things very obviously changed was in the sleeper mechanism
something I did not see noted online but experienced first-hand in the store
so I tried to take note of the sit and the lay of the couch where I could (without getting to sleep on them
I included four sofa beds I didn't get to try but found decent reviews for
Price: $749Size (closed): 41" D x 33" H x 89" WSize (open): 57" D x 33" H x 89" W
If you've heard of any IKEA sleeper sofa
the boxy and structured sofa bed is well-known by customers and editors alike — perhaps one of the most popular budget options out there
I tried it out in the store and could see the appeal
It's certainly not the chicest on the market (although the leather option upped the ante)
and I loved the built-in storage for the cushions when not in use
the Friheten is crafted from plywood and particleboard — not the very best
the most common type of foam fill for sofas
but the back cushions are filled with polyester fiber balls instead
I only mention this because you can definitely feel the difference between the two when sitting
but if you need something secondary for an office or a guest bedroom
Price: $549Size (closed): 32" D x 32" H x 76" WSize (open): 53" D x 16" H x 76" W
The Älvdalen is super small and compact — tall or broad individuals, take heed. It's quite firm, too; if you want a deep sink, this isn't the one. I will say that the bed set-up was sleek and smart, and much like the Friheten, I loved the included storage space
I found it more comfortable as a bed than a sofa
It could have been the model I tried in the store
but it felt like the seats were pitched forward when I sat on it in its couch form
Although there are just 13 reviews (compared to the Friheten's 500)
The three-seater version is better reviewed
but this is used in a common area where a sofa is sometimes needed and a guest bed is occasionally needed as well," said one reviewer
"As others have mentioned it is very firm but we have alleviated this by using a thick mattress topper," added another
Price: $1199Size (closed): 89" W x 33" H x 36" DSize (open): 89" W x 33" H x 63" D
I loved the look of the Morabo the most; definitely the chicest of the bunch with its button tufting, thin metal legs, and light green sofa cover (there is a dark gray option also)
but marginally harder than the previous two
You first pull a trundle frame out from underneath the sofa before removing the back cushions and folding the top portion of the bench seat onto the frame (my photos should help show you what I mean)
I thought the "mattress" was decently comfy
as you can feel the springs through the fabric; that's always a no-go for me
Most reviewers agreed with me; it seems that was the chief complaint among them all
Price: $249Size (closed): 74.75" W x 33" H x 33" DSize (open): 74.75" W x 33" H x 39" D
The Balkarp is a college sleeper sofa and should be treated as such
it would excel in a dorm room or student apartment
though: I didn't think it was that comfortable either
A quick glance at the reviews suggests that
Buyers say the quality is fair for the price and that assembly/installation was easy
I was actually kind of shocked by the overall positive score — a 3.9 out of 5 — and the number of reviews (137 at the time of this writing)
Price: $899Size (closed): 90.5" W x 34" H x 59.5" DSize (open): 90.5" W x 34" H x 59.5" D
The Friheten sectional boasts the same trappings as the Friheten sofa but in sectional form. It does not feel like a luxury sofa and it's not the most design-forward either
The sleeper setup felt easier than the sofa version
but there was one big issue in my experience: the trundle
which pulls out from underneath the loveseat to form one large bed
not so much that it fully separated from the sectional
but enough that the crack between cushions felt even more noticeable
Some buyers have nothing but nice things to say
Price: $899Size (closed): 80" W x 33.5" H x 39" DSize (open): 80" W x 33.5" H x 96" D
interior design hobbyist Kelin described the Finnala as a "fantastic addition to my home" with a medium-firm cushion
"I highly recommend the Finnala Sleeper Sofa
but I still suggest visiting an IKEA store to try the cushions and test the bed’s comfort in person," she writes
"I can confidently say that it’s a practical and stylish choice for any home
Price: $549Size (closed): 56" W x 34.25" H x 24" DSize (open): 55" W x 16" H x 74" D
The Lycksele Lovas is an interesting one. It's almost like a glorified bean bag — armless, somewhat shapeless, and primed for comfort. Almost like a couch alternative
The gimmick is quite impressive; simply remove the washable sofa cover
available in this funky blue and white pattern as well as black
to reveal a scrunched-up mattress you can then extend into a sleeper
and I didn't think the build of the sofa would live up to the promise of the premise
I am pleasantly surprised by buyer feedback
"Perfect as a guest bed instead of a Murphy [bed]," wrote one buyer
It was easy to assemble and is comfortable to sit and sleep on
Perfect addition to our guest room as it looks good
feels good and when not needed as a bed it doesn't take up a lot of space," said another
Price: $1449Size (closed): 76.75" W x 36" H x 37" DSize (open): 76.75" W x 36" H x 94.5" D
Like the Finnala, the Hyltarp includes an actual fold-out mattress. And for those of us who aren't partial to the look of a white sofa
you can choose from nine other washable covers instead
including a lovely soft blue that I think would look great treated as a neutral
the six customers who left reviews gave the Hylarp a 4.2 for product quality and a 4.3 for appearance
so style really is the stand-out factor here
we have 3.7 stars for ease of assembly/installation; a 3.8 for value for money; and a 3.7 for "works as expected."
Price: $299Size (closed): 50" W x 29" H x 30" DSize (open): 50" W x 29" H x 82.25" D
The Fridhult might be new, but it still has 6 customer reviews we can use as a proxy for testing. Aesthetically, the bright yellow frame offers a fabulous pop of color. And functionally, the couch is designed to take up as little space as possible, so it could be a great solution for smaller homes
It's also apparently quite comfortable as a little loveseat
But I would recommend using it for dorm rooms
and playrooms only; reviews say it's quite low to the ground and smaller than expected
and note that the fold-out cushion sleeper is probably best for just one body
you'll likely need a topper or extra padding to make it comfortable
you might want to splurge on something a bit nicer
you might prefer a darker fabric that's easier to clean in the event of accidents and stains
there is no best IKEA sofa bed; it all depends on your preferences and needs
my favorite of the ones I tried was probably the Friheten — the three-seater
and I know it's quite popular among IKEA's consumer base
If you want something that looks a bit more chic
I'd try the Finnala (the comfort of which I cannot verify as I didn't get to test it)

Many towns have their local traditions and customs
often oddly specific but immensely interesting to witness
The town of Lycksele in Swedish Lapland is one of these places
It is the home to the world's tallest ice pillar
which locals have lovingly crafted every winter for the last quarter-century.
or "Ispelare" is a local landmark created each year by sprinkling water out of a tall vertical pipe
The water slowly freezes over the pipe into a lovely Christmas tree-like structure
The height of the pillar has ranged between roughly 19 to 49 meters (63 feet and 163 feet) over the last 24 years
The tallest it has ever reached was 49.5 meters (163 feet) in 1999—about the height of a 15-story building
It is the town's dream to see the column reach and surpass 50 meters (164 feet). But with winters getting warmer and shorter all over the world—even in this subarctic town in northern Sweden—this may be a tough goal to achieve
the Lycksele city officials even considered stopping the project in 2018
but residents overwhelmingly voted to keep the local tradition and landmark alive

An historic midwest restaurant and popular tourist destination has long been one of the nation's largest importers of Swedish lingonberries
At Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay
lingonberries have been a staple item for generations
few people aside from proud Swedes and Swedish Americans had ever heard of the fruit
As new studies keep touting the health benefits of the lingonberry
its popularity is increasing as people learn of the red berry's many health benefits
long one of the nation’s largest importers of Swedish lingonberries
is hoping to capitalize on its growing popularity and the restaurant’s recognizable name and story
Lingonberries may not seem so different from other fruit- or veggie-turned-condiment
son of the late Al Johnson and co-owner of his famous father's establishment
you find those things that seem simple are never really so simple at all.”
Nearly every diner at Al Johnson’s is served a pewter tray of lingonberry sauce to go with their Swedish meatballs
the 112,000 orders of pancakes the restaurant serves every year
When you host as many diners as Al Johnson’s does
it adds up to a lot of 11-pound buckets of berries
Al’s will use more than 20,000 pounds of lingonberries this year
A bad harvest a couple years ago left head chef Freddie Bexell scrambling to find enough supply to meet the demand
Though University of Wisconsin researcher Dr
Elden Stang introduced the berry to the U.S
growers are still struggling to consistently cultivate it; and it grows almost exclusively in the wilds of Scandinavia and Canada
Bexell finally found a small company that had the berries in a remote city in the far north of Sweden
a native of Sweden who grew up in the city Österbymo
knew he had stumbled onto a great product right away
“They weren’t like anything else on the market,” he says
“They’re not quite as sweet as a lot of the products out there
It’s more like a traditional Swedish lingonberry should be
Lingonberries have three times the polyphenols and twice the antioxidants of cranberries
They also contain high levels of benzoic acid
they’ve been used to help treat blood disorders and urinary tract infections as well
Bexell immediately began thinking of ways to take lingonberries beyond the restaurant
Though Door County folks associate them with pancakes
in smoothies and as a sauce with game meats
Al’s is now capitalizing on the growing popularity of these imported lingonberries by packaging them under the private label of their well-known name: “Al Johnson’s Wild Organic Lingonberries.”
Former Al Johnson’s cook Kit Bütz moved with his family from Chicago back to Door County in 2014 to take on the task of marketing and distributing the products to specialty food stores
gourmet shops and grocery stores in the midwest
“The market is extremely competitive — and growing more so as word spreads of the health benefits of lingonberries,” Bütz says
And while other brands have jumped into the market
he says Al's has several advantages others lack
“I think ours is better than the other products out there
which carries weight in Chicago and throughout the upper midwest
Plus it’s a great story — people love the Al Johnson’s story
and Freddie’s connection to Sweden makes it even more authentic.”
But Bexell wasn’t comfortable putting the Al Johnson’s name on a product that originated from a company he had never seen in person
he booked a trip to visit his home in Sweden and added a detour to Lycksele to meet the people behind the berries
“I needed to meet these guys in person if we were going to do this,” Bexell says
He caught the daily flight north from Stockholm to Lycksele and landed an hour and a half later
just a short distance from the Arctic Circle
He landed at an airport “that makes Austin Straubel look like Chicago O’Hare,” where there was still snow on the ground in mid-May
“I didn’t know if I was going to be greeted by a guy in a suit or a farmer,” Bexell says
“There were two people waiting when I got off the plane
and Bexell was impressed by the small-town nature of the lingonberry operation
met many of the employees and spent hours talking to the owners
He left feeling that Al Johnson’s had found the right partner in the land of the restaurant’s roots
Now he is working on bringing several more products to the larger market
including maple syrup and Swedish pancake mix
it’s a chance to grow beyond the boundaries of the kitchen and contribute to his adopted home community
it’s also a way for us to grow and employ more people all year
This can help the whole community if we do it right.”
Al Johnson's is participating in a food and wine festival that's kicking off the summer season. On June 27, Uncork Summer will take over Wickman House Restaurant during Olde Ellison Bay Days, offering a "taste of Door County" that includes the best from local markets, breweries and restaurants. http://uncorksummer.com
Al Johnson's Wild Organic Swedish Lingonberries will be available at the festival
you can also enjoy Al Johnson's Pickled Beets
limpa and of course Swedish Pancake Mix ..
which Bütz personally recommends pairing with Riesling
malty beer such as the Polka King porter from Door County Brewery
you can never go wrong with an Aquavit bloody mary." And if you're lucky
you'll see the goats enjoying a sunny day on Al Johnson's grass roof

IKEA’s goal isn’t simply to help you move onto bigger and better furnishings

airline and aircraft news and spotting information
Today around 40 BAe ATP aircraft remain in service around the world. The majority of these examples operate with cargo carriers, having been converted from their original passenger-carrying configuration. Principal operators include West Air Europe and Atlantic Airlines. At the time of writing, only one airline — Next Jet — is still flying the ATP in passenger service
Next Jet is a Swedish domestic and regional airline which was founded in 2002 and is based near Stockholm
I recently had the opportunity to take a flight on this now rare aircraft whilst visiting Sweden, and got to experience a fine aircraft which should have been a much greater success story. This was also an opportunity to experience Next Jet and their unique service into the remote Swedish Lapland region
was operating from Stockholm Arlanda with an intermediate stop at Lycksele in both directions
Next Jet operates this route up to three times per day
linking these remote communities with the capital
and also providing an important tourist link to the winter skiing and summer hiking and fishing opportunities
which spent most of its life operating for SATA Air Açores and still bears the tail logo of that airline
so I took a window seat near the front where more legroom is available
Outside is a wonderful view of the starboard engine and propellers
The load on this flight is around 30 passengers
The taxi ride to runway 19R is fairly swift and we are soon rolling with engine power increasing
The ATP is a little more sluggish than more modern turboprops
but with a light load we were soon airborne and making a turn to the right revealing a great view over Arlanda Airport
The flight to Lycksele is around 1 hour 15 minutes
with two cabin attendants servicing the passengers
Approach to the small airport is over an attractive countryside of lakes
before landing on the single 6,564ft (2001m) runway
The aircraft backtracks to the exit taxiway and parks on the apron outside the small terminal building
Time on the ground at Lycksele was only 15 minutes
during which time some passengers disembarked and a couple joined
I was asked to take up a seat near the rear of the aircraft to aid in aircraft balance
The remaining flight time to Arvidsjaur was a quick 20 minutes at relatively low level over the beautiful scenery in this part of the world
adding a vital link for the small community
it is a small airport with a modern terminal of typical Scandinavian design
For the return journey later in the day I took a seat behind the wing on the opposite side of the aircraft
but after making the short hop to Lycksele a significant number of passengers joined the aircraft leaving very few seats vacant
Take-off was therefore much more pronounced this time
with a shallow rate of climb noticeable on the ATP aircraft
Our route took us out over the Bay of Bothnia before turning inland towards Arlanda in the evening sun
Flight time was almost 1 hour 30 minutes on this return leg
It was fascinating to take time to travel on the BAe ATP before the opportunity disappears
and also to experience two remote Swedish airports
and of course to enjoy the unique service offered by Next Jet

Those who manage to stay put are crowned as that year’s Ice Pole Sitting champions
Contests partake in this truly chilling contest during the Wilhelmina Winter Weekend, which spans a few days and is packed with activities. Traditionally, they only had to remain on the ice for 48 hours. But this year, the stakes were raised. Competitors now must endure 66 hours atop their frosty thrones to win.
Though temperatures that plummet below -22 °F are not uncommon, the frigid environment isn’t the only challenge. Participants are only granted a 10-minute break every few hours. They can’t use phones or other forms of electronic entertainment to pass the time, even as the cold darkness sets in. Sleep deprivation is another tricky hurdle sitters must overcome. Contestants have lost after falling asleep and slipping off their ice poles. Luckily, no one has been seriously injured as of yet.
Clearly, sitting in the bitter cold, literally freezing their butts off, is a mental and physical challenge for the competitors. So why do they even do it? Perhaps it’s the prize money, or maybe they're just seeking a good old icy boost to the ego. Whatever their reasons, contestants have been eagerly partaking in the annual tradition since 1999.
The competition takes place every year during the event Wilhelmina Winter Weekend.

again: Factory's unique voyage home from Poland It’s not often that a factory is moved from Poland to Sweden. But that’s what Norsjö resident Ivan Harnesk and his team have managed through the newly started company Fläkten Systems.– The premises are ideal for our needs
says Harnesk.“After two months we were able to start production
It must have been something of a record,” says Ivan Harnesk
has successfully relocated a substantial fan factory from Poland to the Lilltjärn industrial area in Lycksele
This factory was originally part of the Fläkten Group
which moved production to Poland in 2020 during a restructuring.
The Polish operation focused on smaller residential units equipped with rotary heat exchangers and range hoods
– Fläkten Group no longer wished to invest in this particular segment
and we seized the opportunity to bring the production to Lycksele
Fläkten Systems is primarily owned by two Lycksele-based companies: JM Indutech
specializing in occupational health products
a manufacturer of ventilation ducts.
They were joined by several other business owners with expertise in ventilation
Harnesk had previously provided consulting services to GD Vent through his company Breja AB
– While there were several other potential locations
we wanted the factory to be close to the owners

the newly formed company had already secured its initial order.
– We primarily sell our units to contractors who do work for their clients
The entire factory was transported using 14 trucks
“There were several other options for the location
but we wanted the factory close to the owners,” says Ivan Harnesk.Foto: Lars Westerlund– After two months
The 1,600 square meter premises now housing Fläkten previously accommodated Maxmoduler
Fläkten has since installed three assembly lines

– I anticipate our team will grow to ten by the summer
He began his professional journey at Edströms Trä in Gumboda before transitioning to Thorgrens Trä in Kvarnåsen
Ivan furthered his qualifications and subsequently pursued studies in business economics at the Stockholm School of Economics in Umeå.
His initial role as an economist was with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) in Lycksele
Ivan worked in finance and sales at Grundnäs Kött
He served as the CFO at TM-Konsult in Lycksele from 2013 to 2021
Ivan has collaborated with his wife at Breja
“It’s cool to be able to do something like this at 55 years old
I like what’s challenging and I’m a team player,” says Ivan Harnesk.Foto: Lars Westerlund– It feels very inspiring to be working on the development of Fläkten Systems
It's amazing to be doing something like this at the age of 55
He has also demonstrated his teamwork skills in sports
First as a football player for Åmliden and Norsjö
and later as one of the founders of the association NIDS - Norsjö Sports in Collaboration
which was established in 2011 and is set to close this year
I experienced an unexpected success when my team "Släkten är värst" won the amateur division in Norsjö Beach
But it was probably mostly thanks to my talented teammates

The company is based in Lycksele and has recently taken over the production of residential ventilation products from FläktGroup

A lynx that had escaped from a zoo in the northern Swedish town of Lycksele attacked a dog being walked by its owner last week
Eighteen-year-old Emma Danielsson was out walking her two-year-old Siberian husky
just outside the Sami town late on Wednesday night when she heard a loud noise from the nearby woods
She explained that her first reaction was that it could have been a fox
clearly startled by what it had encountered
The lynx then sprung from the undergrowth and started to claw at the husky
The dog made a run for it but the lynx chased after it
while the teenager admitted that she had no idea what to do
Lycksele Zoo manager Irene Sjogren confirmed that a lynx had escaped the zoo in November and that the tracks found where the girl was walking her dog appeared to be those of the missing beast
She said they had been granted permission to carry out a search with guns
but that they would wait until it got a little lighter
Sjogren said the preferred scenario would be that they stunned the lynx and brought it back to the zoo
but admitted that they would be left with no choice but to kill it if that was not possible

IKEA is working towards becoming a fully circular and climate positive business by 2030
2021: IKEA has turned its iconic instruction manual on its head by launching Disassembly Instructions
a set of easy-to-use guides that make disassembling its furniture easier than ever before
The Swedish retailer is making it simpler for customers to extend the life of their IKEA furniture – one Allen Key at a time
Whether the flatpack items need a new home or a new place in the home
Disassembly Instructions provide customers with clear and safe step-by-step guides on how to take apart their favourite products
IKEA has created the guides for some of its top-selling products:
BILLY Bookcase
BRIMNES Bed
LYCKSELE Sofa bed
MALM Desk
PAX Wardrobe
POANG Chair
The launch aims to encourage consumers to keep their furniture for longer, helping extend the piece’s life cycle.
Hege Sæbjørnsen, Country Sustainability Manager at IKEA UK & Ireland, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at IKEA and we remain committed to introducing new ways to promote circular consumption, in order to help meet our goal of becoming a fully circular and climate positive business by 2030, in addition to making sustainable living accessible and affordable to all.
“In the past three years we have put a great deal of effort into understanding and defining what a truly circular value chain means for IKEA, and as such, we want to take circular consumption mainstream and make it easier than ever for customers to acquire, care for and pass on products such as by repairing, reusing, reselling, and recycling them.
“Alongside other initiatives like Buy Back, we hope the reverse manuals inspire people to re-think their consumption habits by extending the life cycle of our products and, together taking small steps, to help reverse against climate change at this critical time.”

Senaste nyttInnehåll First new Swedish mine in over ten years opens – in Lycksele Sweden is poised to open its first new mine in over ten years
The first shipment of ore is expected to leave Fäbodtjärn
this summer. The mining area in Fäbodtjärn from the air
plans to extract roughly 50,000 tons of ore annually
The project is also expected to create 15 to 17 new jobs
Analysis suggests the ore contains an average of 7.8 grams of gold per ton
– The high prices have a positive impact on our calculations
explains Botnia Exploration CEO Fredrik Bergsten to VK
– If we were to value the gold in the ground based on the current price
the total value of our reserves and resources would be around 1 billion kronor
there are processing losses between extracting the rock and producing a saleable product
but it gives you an idea of the significance of this discovery
The journey to mining has been lengthy since prospecting began in 2007
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket)
appealed against the project all the way to the Supreme Court
The final permits were granted last summer
paving the way for the first blast to create the access ramp leading down to the ore body
the first blasts might be audible since they'll be very close to the surface
the blasting will not affect nearby residents
When asked by VK about the timeline for the first ore to be extracted
–We anticipate collecting our initial tons of ore sometime after the holidays
Like in much of Scandinavia and the rest of Europe
its common practise to euthanize healthy animals at several Swedish zoos and animal parks in order to make room for others
This was particurly highlighted in 2001 when Lycksele Zoo in northern Sweden shot 3 healthy bear cubs (the ones on the photo) in order to make room for new bears and prevent inbreeding despite international condemnation by animal rights activists worldwide including French actress Brigitte Bardot
Lycksele Zoo said that giving the bears to any zoo on the continent was out of question
and also refused to set them free as they considered bears to be overpopulated
Despite all the controversy around the killing itself
Bolli and Bompa was then butchered by Lycksele Zoo's scientific director
and had their meat sold to luxury restaurants throughout northern Sweden where bear meat is tradition
This is not the only case of healthy animals put down at Swedish zoos
the Skansen Zoo in Stockholm said in 2013 that they are routinely "putting down" healthy animals in order to prevent inbreeding and make room for new ones
admitted that he has put down at least 10 perfectly healthy baboons in the last 10 years and also admits to shooting the young bears every time they have reached the age of 2 when they have went out of their "cute" phase
CEO Jonas Wahlström also said that putting down the giraffe Marius at Copenhagen Zoo was perfectly okay
As for actually using the meat from euthanized zoo animals as human food is not only practised by Lycksele Zoo
there is also zoos in southern Sweden who does that
In a report in 2003 several zoos in the south of Sweden admitted that they sell bear meat to luxury restaurants when "surplus" bears are euthanized
In 2013 it was revealed that the staff at the Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna near Stockholm had a BBQ party on meat from euthanized surplus African wildebeests
Other zoos in Sweden consider it as immoral to use the meat from euthanized animals as human food
and instead feeds it to the lions and tigers
the Kolmården Zoo scientific director Bengt Röken slaughtered 28 perfectly healthy antelopes cause they were not good enough for breeding
at Kolmården Zoo in Nörrköping in central Sweden
These zoos are all part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (the EAZA) who controls hundreds of zoos throughout Europe
to kill perfectly healthy animals is a part of their breeding program that many member zoos choose to follow
Even though Swedish and Danish zoos are more open about this
it also happens on other zoos in Europe but more or less in secret
