and Nässjö and Vetlanda from midnight until noon
emergency services warned of trees blocking some of the smaller roads in the region
Sweden's iconic Princess Birgitta, one of King Carl XVI Gustaf's three older sisters

Sweden's high energy prices fall sharply after just a week
Southern Sweden last week had its most expensive electricity prices since the weeks before Christmas two years ago
Sweden is divided into four “electricity regions” from north to south
with the two southern regions starting around the town of Uppsala
paid around 1.50 kronor per kilowatt hour on average last week – whereas people in northern Sweden only paid around 0.09-0.10 kronor
the weekly average stood at just below 1.20 kronor per kilowatt hour
But the price increases appear to have been temporary
the daily price is set to land at 0.24 kronor in electricity area 4 and 0.27 kronor in electricity area 3
compared to 0.07-0.08 kronor in the two northernmost regions
The main reason for the price fluctuations is that Germany's wind-based energy production slowed down last week with very little wind
But they're compensating for that this week with stormy weather
Swedish vocabulary: electricity – el (elektricitet)

A vehicle has run over people on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm
Four people are dead and 15 victims are treated at local hospitals after a truck drove into crowds of people along Drottninggatan just before 3 p.m
Three victims were killed immediately when the truck drove through the pedestrian section of Drottninggatan
Late in the evening local time Swedish hospital administrators confirmed one of the attacker's victims had died at the hospital and 15 were hurt including two children
Six patients were released from the hospital early Saturday while nine seriously injured remain
One Uzbek man has been arrested suspected of terrorism
He was apprehended in the early hours of Saturday in Märsta
Swedish police have been able to trace the suspect and alleged driver of the truck from the collision with Åhléns City to the Arlanda Express and then south to Märsta
Authorities are still investigating other possible accomplices behind the attack
Security has been stepped up and tighter border controls are in place
A stolen beer truck ran over people on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm shortly before 3 p.m
which had been hijacked earlier in the day
later smashed into the Åhléns department store before reaching Klarabergsgatan where it started to burn
Reporters on the scene said that there were dead and injured people on the ground
There were also later denied reports of shooting around Hötorget and Åhléns City
Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Löfvén immediately said "Sweden is under attack
Everything points to this being a terrorist attack." During a later press conference the Prime Minister stressed "[We are] an entire country gathered in grief
I would today like to address those of you who mourn someone you have lost or are worried about someone who is hurt ..
you should know - all of Sweden is with you." Löfvén further confirmed that the police are investigating the attack as a terrorist crime
and that whether it is performed by an organization or a sole perpetrator
the goal of terrorism is to undermine democracy
"But such acts will not succeed in Sweden," said the Prime Minister
He said that Sweden today has shown its strength and he praised both the police
health care services and the people of Stockholm that opened up both their homes and workplaces
The subway system was closed and the central station emptied but all public transportation was up and running again in the early morning Saturday
Drottninggatan is one of Stockholm’s busier streets on any day and the incident happened at one of its busiest times
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families
We spoke with our friend and former colleague Nadine Kugel
who was locked in for two hours on the third floor of a house along Drottninggatan
Nadine tells us “I was sitting by a window to the street when I heard a big bang and screams from the ground
As I looked outside I could see someone bleeding heavily and another person not far away
My first thought was that something had happened at the construction site nearby but people were panicking in the street … running
screaming and looking further down Drottninggatan
That’s when I realized that the cement barriers to the pedestrian part of Drottninggatan had been damaged and pushed aside.”
The office where Nadine works was being evacuated while we were in contact with her two hours after the attack

A 38-year-old man is being held on suspicion of murdering a 28-year-old woman, who was on her way home in Märsta when she was attacked and stabbed to death. The woman, who was on the phone with a friend at the time, has been named as Nimo in Swedish media
The man had no previous connection to Nimo
and is believed to have followed her from the bus
Swedish media report the man has serious psychiatric disorders and has a history of receiving psychiatric care
In 2020 he was convicted of vandalism after attacking cars and properties with sledgehammer
a doctor described him as having been "very violent and aggressive" at one point

Foreign tourists flock to Scandinavian ski resorts
the company that runs some of Sweden's biggest ski resorts
made an operating loss of 482 million kronor in September-November
The company usually makes a loss in this quarter
but it's 17 million kronor worse than the same period last year
Fewer people booked overnight stays at their ski resorts
with demand being 3 percent lower than last year
"The slight downturn in booking volume is explained by the lack of a pre-season in November
compared with the record early start in the previous year
as well as by the fact that bookings for Easter are being received slightly later this year because of Easter falling late in 2025," said CEO Stefan Sjöstrand in a statement
adding that the company is expecting stable demand during the rest of the season
"The favourable climate and the attractive Swedish and Norwegian krona appeal to the foreign market
which means that we are seeing increased numbers of guests from abroad
Swedish vocabulary: a ski resort – en skidort
Sweden hit by three winter bugs all at once
Sweden's Public Health Agency is warning that the 2024/25 influenza season is now under way
the number of confirmed influenza infections doubled compared to the week before
"Remember to show special consideration and avoid contact with people who risk serious illness if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection – even if you have mild symptoms," said Public Health Agency epidemiologist AnnaSara Carnahan in a statement
But that's not the only virus going around at the moment
The agency also warned a few weeks ago that the norovirus season – or vinterkräksjukan as it's known in Swedish ("winter vomiting bug" – apparently Swedes like being literal about this sort of thing) – is also under way. And it's also the worst season in 26 years for mycoplasma infections
sometimes referred to as "walking pneumonia" in the US as it can be similar to pneumonia but is usually less serious
Swedish vocabulary: consideration – hänsyn
Swedish government wants to allow police to secretly monitor children's communications
Sweden's government said on Wednesday it wanted to give police the power to secretly monitor phone calls and electronic communications of those under 15 years of age
in response to a surge in gang violence in the Nordic country
Sweden has seen a rise in recent years in gang shootings and bombings linked to score-settling between rival groups and struggles to control the illicit drug market
hired as contract killers because they are under 15
"Today these networks recruit 10- and 11-year-olds," Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer was quoted by the AFP news agency as telling a press conference announcing the results of a government probe into the use of surveillance on children
"Weapons and explosives are handled by 12- and 13-year-olds
Shootings and other serious violent crimes are often carried out by 14- and 15-year-olds," Strömmer added
Strömmer said the proposal would be sent out for review among experts and concerned authorities
It would need to concern a crime that could carry a sentence of at least four years in prison or a terrorist offence
the requirement is a crime punishable of at least two years
Swedish vocabulary: to monitor – att övervaka
