Think again. The Theatre Department’s upcoming production of Peter Malmö is a dazzlingly beautiful ghost story where echoes of the dead swirl in a creepy and complicated fashion. This new adaptation of the Mexican novel Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo comes to the Modern Theatre April 10-13 Johnny journeys to a once thriving industrial town on a remote arctic island only to find the landscape flooded with death Having limited knowledge about his father and fueled by his mother’s dying wish for him to return Johnny discovers a legacy of brutality and destruction as told by the town’s residents; all of whom just happen to be dead.  Directing this otherworldly production is visiting director, actor, and historian Armando Rivera, artistic director of Teatro Chelsea, a bilingual Latine theater company in Chelsea, MA. Rivera first appeared at the Modern last year in Juvenilia’s staged reading of Hugo Salcedo’s Dos Nogales Students are thrilled to work with him on the show.  “He’s very open to you making choices and finding the character yourself,” says Nathan Lavoie He encourages you to make choices and play It’s very personable with just a 10-person cast.”   Bilingual students Valeria Lam and Maya Grgurevich have roles where they speak Spanish and English working with Rivera has provided her an opportunity to approach acting in new way.   “Working with Armando…it’s a lot but in the very best sense!” she says playfully “He integrates physical movement into the work -- being able to portray something with your body without saying anything.”  Lam relates to her character who is simply known as Immigrant Woman But the feeling of leaving your home and going to a place where you basically know no one it’s the same for everyone.”   whose father immigrated to the US from Serbia also identifies with the immigrant experience and stresses the timeliness of the story it’s important,” she says.  She has been able to channel her background into her role as Immigrant Man “coming to US seeking opportunity and a better life and maybe not always feeling welcome in certain spaces I feel these things need to be recognized.”  the cast had the opportunity to Zoom with playwrights Raúl Durantes and Mark Litwicki both of whom will visit campus to see the show and participate in a talkback co-sponsored by the Ford Hall Forum “Having the opportunity to ask the playwrights about the adaptation has left no space for any awkwardness,” said Lam.  The shifting narrative of Peter Malmö can make it a tricky story to follow which has challenged students to explore the play’s deeper themes of family legacy and the aftermath of tyrannical abuses of power.  Grgurevich can offer some light: “At the end of the day this is a Mexican ghost story.”   “The essence of it is like body and soul and where our souls ultimately end up Every person who sees it will interpret it a different way.”   Tickets for Peter Malmö are on sale now at tinyurl.com/PeterMalmo Peter Malmö runs at the Modern Theatre April 10-13 planning my first ever trip to Malmö but the whole concert trip gets a really special dimension when I manage to combine it with other things I enjoy in life it was a rare occasion for me to have a weekend getaway with my wife I really enjoyed the travel itself which took us from Norway The day of the show was a chilly day in Malmö – nothing unusual for this time of the year We appeared in front of Babel 45 minutes before the doors opened I must admit that it’s getting increasingly more difficult to figure out when you should turn up at the club to avoid waiting in a long line including a person who had traveled all the way from Vancouver The band that performed in Malmö featured John Elliot on vocals and Ludwig Nordlander from Confess on bass John Elliot seemed to have some recurring vocal issues a few songs into the concert He repeatedly disappeared in the wings only to reappear again but something was clearly off by the time the band finished performing “Rust” whatever was causing the problem was out of the way and the show switched into higher gear instantly the band swept into “Native Nature” Martin Sweet played the beginning chords of Skid Row’s “Monkey Business” only to smoothly segue into the notes of Crashdïet’s track It was an impressive rendition of a track that deserves to be performed live Martin Sweet ripped up a wicked guitar solo “It’s A Miracle” as usual prompted an excited wave of singing across the whole venue This version of the song was however a little shorter than usual without the usual sing-alongs at the very beginning The moment in Crashdïet’s live shows that I most look forward to is probably “Chemical” and John Elliot managed to drive the energy level up by egging on the crowd and dancing with his mic stand Especially the last chorus with the vocal ad-libs gets me each time “Chemical” is custom built to be performed live and I don’t think I’ve seen a show by Crashdïet without this track in the setlist The band disappeared for a brief while only to invade the stage again and to give the crowd more of what we wanted The characteristic drum beat introduced “Breakin’ The Chains” There was no slowing down as John Elliot quickly introduced “In The Raw” His voice sounded powerful here reinforced by the crowd singing the choruses It was also great to still see “We Die Hard” still in the setlist as a penultimate track It has a very interesting vocal melody in the verses and a catchy chorus which is easy to pick up even if you haven’t heard it before it did offer a little respite in the final part of the set The tightly packed crowd needed it before the final climax in “Generation Wild” Crashdïet with John Elliot is a little bit darker band than with the previous frontman Gabriel Keyes with all the band members dressed in black and a sinister figure of Ludwig on bass contributing to this aura It’s only Martin Sweet who somehow invokes the band’s more glammed-up past This darker impression contrasts nicely with a visually more flamboyant performance by Crazy Lixx John Elliot smoothly connects with the crowd He lets his energy carry him and this energy is pretty infectious The band made me forget for a while that they were not meant to be the main star of the evening Crashdïet performing live (full show) at Babel in Malmö, Sweden on February 14, 2025 (video from singer198003‘s YouTube page): the band rolled into an empowered rendition of “Hell Raising Women” there was time for Danny Rexon to address the audience he did so in Swedish but he soon switched to English aware that there were fans in the audience visiting from far outside of Sweden Danny was trying to find a person who had traveled furthest to see this show and Canada I had met before the show must have traveled even further the record release party saw the live premiere of two tracks from the new album namely “Little Miss Dangerous” and “Hunt For Danger” Speaking of the former of the two new tracks it has everything you would expect from an instant live classic — a driving rhythm with some cowbell sprinkled here and there early on a great build-up to catchy sing-along chorus a slower moment before the last chorus with time for some vocal exchanges between Danny and the audience This song went over so well live that it would have probably sounded great even if the band members had stood totally still while performing “Little Miss Dangerous” was definitely one of the early finest moments in the set In an introduction to the performance of “Hunt For Danger” Danny said that the band scenes used on the video for the song had been recorded on the very same stage a few weeks before “Hunt For Danger” is a guitar fest One blistering melodic solo follows another with Chrisse Olsson stepping into the spotlight first only for both of them to finally play those solos off each other the two guitarists alternated playing solos depending on the song Neither guitarist got any extended solo spot The guitarists often switched sides of the stage while bassist Jens Andersson played his own crazy show They all often high-fived people in the audience a perk of playing your own city and having a lot of friends supporting you It should also be noted that Robin Nilsson is an incredible talent He’s one of those drummers who aren’t just a background during a live show You do pay attention to his presence and his drumming because there’s something magnetic about his drumming style I’d seen him a few times before with The Cruel Intentions and each time he impresses a little more familiar at least to those who have seen Crazy Lixx before which we lapped up because the band conveyed them with a lot of necessary enthusiasm — Danny Rexon wearing a mask and wielding a knife in “XIII” and some flag waving in “Anthem For America” The show was not overly long and they played only 12 tracks but the magic was there emanating especially from the rhythm section But the band retains a lot of focus on precision and detail The Chrisse Olsson / Jens Lundgren guitar combo can create a veritable storm as in “Rise Above” and they can stand back a little and create a perfect backdrop for an ’80s inspired tune (think the verses in “Girls of The 80’s” or “Blame It On Love”) Danny Rexon’s vocals were as exciting live as they are on the albums the band has live performance and stage presence down to science Crazy Lixx performing live (full show) at Babel in Malmö, Sweden on February 14, 2025 (video from singer198003‘s YouTube page): Copyright © 2025 | WordPress Theme by MH Themes From April 29 dioxide has received a financial boost from the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) the government agency has granted SEK 5.3 million (about $484,003) to Malmö CO2 Hub a collaboration between several industrial and energy companies The funding has been awarded as part of The Industrial Leap a governmental initiative to support the green transition and eco-friendly innovative projects The Malmö CO2 Hub project gathers several parties active in energy port logistics and waste management sectors: Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) with the support of Växjö Energi and Öresundskraft the financial support from the Swedish Energy Agency will be used to develop an in-depth feasibility study for a common carbon infrastructure in southern Sweden including transportation and final geological storage The feasibility study is planned to be completed in June 2025 A common system for the transport and storage or utilization of carbon dioxide would allow companies in the carbon dioxide hub to share investment costs utilization and storage (CCUS) more financially accessible and thus increasing the emission reductions The goal is to develop a sustainable CCUS infrastructure that is open to additional stakeholders we can achieve climate benefits not only for industry but also for Sweden as a whole,” Henrik Norgren “The project provides economies of scale and reduced costs for all participating companies making it easier for us to contribute to achieving Sweden’s climate goals This funding from the Swedish Energy Agency and our partners makes this possible and establishes a model that other Regions can derive inspiration from.” A solution for sustainable industrial development and climate change Carbon capture has been identified as an important component in achieving the climate targets set by Sweden and the EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions The thinking behind the project is to establish Malmö as a carbon dioxide logistics hub where carbon dioxide can be collected and transported for final storage the parties involved in Malmö CO2 Hub are working to build out an infrastructure that enables 1-2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to be captured and stored annually This would thus contribute to achieving negative emissions and more sustainable industrial production in Sweden Malmö CO₂ Hub is an advancement of the CNETSS collaboration which has the long-term goal of increasing the potential for reducing emissions and achieving “negative emissions.” Participants in phases 1 and 2 were South Scania Waste These phases resulted in the port in Malmö being identified as the most suitable location for an intermediate storage facility for carbon dioxide The project has determined the amount and timing of the quantities of carbon dioxide to be captured by the participants the most appropriate methods for transport to the intermediate storage facility as well as the size of the storage facility and the physical storage requirements of the intermediate storage facility CMP also joined Copenhagen’s CO2 capture project on Amager Bakke With a large-scale plant for carbon capture Amager Bakke will be capable of capturing up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 annually This will be an important contribution to the Danish climate goals as well as Copenhagen’s goals of reaching CO2 neutrality Daily news and in-depth stories in your inbox The While the Öresund Bridge physically connects Malmö and Copenhagen Havsprinsen represents an emotional and cultural link between the cities Malmö’s city council declined to fund the piece or allow its placement on city land citing an already high number of male monuments by male artists private sponsors and crowdfunding secured a spot for it at a local marina Originally, Havsprinsen had visible male genitalia this feature was removed and replaced with seaweed to shift the focus away from the statue’s gender In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, the story that inspired the Copenhagen landmark, the mermaid never wins the prince’s love. Perhaps this time, in Malmö, things will turn out differently. Havsprinsen is located at Limhamn Small Boat Marina in southwestern Malmö and is accessible 24/7. Outdoor parking is available nearby, and buses 7 and 9 stop at Malmö Valborgsgatan, a 10-minute walk from the statue. Designed to protect up to 150 workers, the structure, however, ultimately went unused, as Sweden remained largely untouched by the war While relatively common in wartime Germany, this type of above-ground bunker is believed to be the only one of its kind in Sweden. Until relatively recently, the city had a reputation for being a post-industrial backwater – but all that changed in 2000, sparked in part by the opening of the Öresund bridge and helped power an economic transformation in Malmö by improving links to the rest of Europe the city is at the forefront of sustainable living Just a six minute journey from Malmö’s central train station, Hyllie is built on a greenfield site. Work to create a new residential and commercial development there began in 2010, and the aim is that it will be home to 25,000 residents by 2040 Peder Berne of E.ONThe fact Hyllie has become something of a blueprint for smart cities of the future is no accident “The city of Malmö approached E.ON in the early stages of city development and started the dialogue: could we utilise Hyllie as a testbed How can we enable energy in a sustainable way and what kind of sustainable technology do we need in order to do so?” says Peder Berne What emerged was an innovative public-private partnership between the city of Malmö the publicly owned water and sewerage company E.ON recognises there is no single solution to a country’s energy problems, and this multi-layered approach is visible in Hyllie. The district’s heating and cooling is completely powered by renewable and recycled (sometimes known as “recovered”) energy, which comes from a number of sources: solar; wind; biogas from food waste or sewage; incinerated refuse; and the capture of excess heat from industrial processes powering a city on renewable and recycled energy comes with its own set of challenges “We can’t really [control] when the wind’s blowing or when the sun is shining or when the heating or cooling demand is high,” says Berne “And then it becomes much more relevant to ask and also how can we find flexibility within the infrastructure that we are developing to cope with these variations?” This is where the idea started to form of a digital brain called ectocloud that optimises the different thermal energy flows, and enables an integrated energy infrastructure that can harness, store and redistribute energy throughout the local networks. This also fostered the development of E.ON’s innovative heating and cooling system, ectogrid From data centres and transport hubs to supermarkets, many cities already produce energy in the form of excess heat. One of the most exciting aspects of the E.ON ectogrid, winner of an energy efficiency award at the Cop28 climate summit in Dubai is that it uses heat pumps to harness this energy which usually goes untapped ectocloud ensures that the best available energy is redirected to buildings across the smart district heating grid when and where needed a major redevelopment project on east London’s Royal Docks As for why Hyllie emerged as a testbed for sustainable innovation “From a Scandinavian or a Swedish perspective I think sustainability has been quite high up on our agenda and Malmö is a frontrunner in sustainable urban development recognising the value of driving transition through collaborative testbeds providing proof of concept in real-life environments,” he says “Perhaps that is because we have a lot of nature nearby it’s a place where the mind can get a bit of peace.” With the help of E.ON this sustainable outlook could soon be one of Sweden’s most famous exports Find out more about E.ON’s pioneering work in the UK to create sustainable cities and communities WAXED: GET YOUR MUSIC PRESSED ON VINYL FOR FREE In March of this year, eight years later, photos of the ledge section from the plaza being reconstructed with the original tiles surfaced, with the Instagram account tagged being @love.malmo a skateboarder who works for the City of Malmö and is at the helm of its creation to have a talk about how the project came to fruition I think the best way to start this is by talking about what you do at the City of Malmö I am the project manager for Skate Malmö Essentially the City of Malmö and Bryggeriet started producing big skate events and a skatepark in 2006 Those events were produced annually and that sort of led to a role within the city as an event coordinator I was hired to take over the role as the events producer I have evolved that role to be more than just the events but to also use those events to generate value for the city in partnership with the skateboarding organisation That means that we’ve introduced a legacy strategy so that whenever we do an event somewhere We’ve used that to develop street spots to evolve the opportunities for street skating in Malmö we will instead of buying wooden ramps you bring in granite blocks and you find an agreement with the city to keep those blocks for a set amount of time The strategy is in place to help Malmö grow as a skate city How did it come up to do the Love Malmö idea I'm a skateboarder myself and growing up Embarcadero was the centre of the world Then when Eastern exposure dropped there was a huge cultural shift where the skateboarding world became interested in the east coast and in particular Philadelphia The main stage for this new cultural wave in skateboarding was Love Park Love Park then became a dream spot for everybody It was on top of everyone’s bucket list to visit Philadelphia the skate organization there but any plans of doing a reconstruction of Love Park looked like it was very far away We were obviously keen to reintroduce Love Park in Malmö The main point for us is that this is cultural heritage and we wanted to show that this is worth bringing back to the world but also to communicate the cultural significance of the Philadelphia skate scene the project is mainly a homage to the Philadelphia skaters to be like what you created at Love has had resonance all around the world We also want to show cities around the world that skateboarding can add value to cities and urban life and you don't have to separate it by building skateparks away from the city centre you can let skateboarding come in and be a driver for culture and in your city Did you talk to many people in the Philadelphia scene about how they felt about you guys rebuilding the Love in Malmö I got in touch with Brian Panebianco from the Sabotage crew and Josh Nims for SkatePhilly or if we were claiming Philadelphia's material because that's the last thing we want to do We wanted to highlight the sort of cultural heritage of Love Park we want to facilitate not claim so that dialogue was really important to me The idea was that we would take some of the material there's much more left to do like a kind of a symbolic section of Love Park and hopefully the proof of concept that potentially somewhere in the world a full Love Park reconstruction will one day happen When did you first get in contact with the City of Philadelphia It was in 2016 and we had the tiles in Malmö in 2017 What was the importance of you having the original tiles from Love The point of this is having the real material that was used at Love and have an interactive monument to the skaters You participate in the Love Park monument by skating it not by looking at a statue of the architect What did the city think when you told them that you wanted to buy the tiles The leadership within the city were very much in support of the project.  They thought it was a fantastic idea to show how Malmö is supporting the value of skate culture and bringing something of cultural relevance back one of the reasons it's taken so long to make it happen is that we've gone through three reorganisations in the city Just a bunch of things happened which pushed the whole Love Malmö project to the side How was it finding a space for the project I saw a walk through you posted on Instagram recently and it is right in the middle of the city super close to the Svampen ledges For this project the site needs to be right in the heart of the city Love Park was in the middle of Philadelphia It was surrounded by other spots like City Hall it was really important to us to place Love where there are other spots to skate around it It was really hard to find but the spot we’ve got now is perfect it is right at the heart of Malmö’s skate history it’s close to Svampen ledges and right by the church where everyone skated in the 90s You are only recreating a small part of Love How did you decide on the part you were going to create The material we had kind of dictated what we could do so it was essentially going to be a ledge section We didn’t want to claim any of the blocks skated before or anything like that because that feels like it belongs to the Philly skaters or even in a museum.   having a city that is so supportive and encouraging of creating as many public spaces for skateboarding as they can The story of Malmö is one of how you build something that is not there From the DIY crew with Pontus [Alv] to Bryggeriet getting organised and through that building the skateparks then starting the skate high school and doing the events The skaters that are the most driven in the scene are people that move here from other places because they’re used to not having anything and working for it They also know that if you’re in Malmö and have ideas you can realise them What Malmö has is it has a strong community and a lot of people working with skateboarding I think it is a mistake to think of Malmö as the spots we have the point is we have the skate organisation Bryggeriet and all these individuals who have contributed to the scene and had ideas which have been realised All those things combined become the Malmö skate scene and I hope that living in Malmö as a skater is more than just an opportunity than skating the skate spaces and hanging out but also having a way to contribute to the skate scene if you had any advice that you think that cities around the world should take from Malmö’s approach to skateboarding They need to understand that the skateboarders know skateboarding Cities have to understand what they don't understand You can't hire someone who's not a skateboarder to build the skatepark It is the same thing when it comes to producing the events you can't don't hire someone outside of the community thinking that they're going to do better work from within the community and help it grow One mistake a lot of cities make is that they focus on the physical skatepark Skateparks are great because they can start scenes Once a community struggles to get a skatepark and they have it built then there's nothing else to fight for them they get bored with the park just being the same every day they quit and then that's the end of a generation of skaters but also have a strategy to work with the community How are you going to activate the skate park How are you going to work with integrating skateboarding in the city How are you going to help the skate organisation be more inclusive to different user groups Think of the community and the people as what you're trying to build as opposed to getting rid of the community by giving them a skatepark.   Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and the sixth largest Nordic conurbation but also Sweden’s fastest growing city right now partly due to immigration and its bustling port city atmosphere And host city to Eurovision 2024 (I know this doesn’t mean much to American readers!) Malmö serves as a primary entry point for the majority of migrants heading to Sweden and the population could hit half a million in the next ten years a locale for the phenomenon of Scandi Noir given that Malmö has some rough and poor districts some issues around migration and crime and So where can we find Malmö in crime fiction Let’s start with the biggest and most successful crime novel series to be set in Malmö – The Malmö Mysteries a nine book series featuring Inspector Anita Sundström written by regular visitor to the city The series starts with Meet Me In Malmö (2015) A British journalist is invited to Malmö to interview an old university friend who is now one of Sweden’s leading film directors When he discovers the directors glamorous film star wife dead in her apartment the Skåne County Police (the regional police for Malmö) are called in to solve the high-profile case Among the investigating team is Inspector Anita Sundström who soon finds the list of suspects growing In subsequent books Inspector Sundström deals with many of the issues seen as key to understanding Malmö – a gunman loose in Malmö and targeting immigrants a woman stabbed to death while jogging in Malmö’s main park harks back to the the birth of an independent Estonia and also the 1994 MS Estonia ferry disaster (the ship sunk en route from Tallin to Stockholm) then a young woman’s imaginary boyfriend goes missing Call in the Sensitive Crimes team – Ulf “the Wolf” Varg who’s in love with Varg’s car (and possibly Varg too); Carl Holgersson who likes nothing more than filling out paperwork; and Erik Nykvist as readers of McCall Smith’s other books will recognise perhaps peculiarly Malmö-esque – Nordic oddness The series continues with The Talented Mr Varg (2020 and a hat tip to Patricia Highsmith there!) with the team on the trail of a notorious philanderer and a group of dealers exporting wolves The Man with the Silver Saab (2021) – once Sweden’s coolest auto exports – dives into the art scene in Malmö Finally The Discreet Charm of the Big Bad Wolf (2023) sees the Department of Sensitive Crimes downsizing and the team bickering and fighting for their jobs Still there are sensitive crimes to be solved – very Malmö crimes – a man’s cabin has mysteriously disappeared and Ulf is tasked with finding out what happened And a potentially promising veterinary treatment for deafness in dogs Detective Leonore Asker seems to have a great job at Malmö’s Major Crime Division investigating high profile kidnapping cases in the so-called Department of Lost Souls – a unit for odd cold cases banished to the basement of Malmö’s police station Someone is secretly placing small ominous figures in a huge model train displays and one of the figures seems to represent the missing woman from a recent kidnapping case As Leonore Asker’s investigation leads her into the world of the abandoned and forgotten she reaches out to her old friend and urban explorer Martin Hill It is expected that this will be the first in a series featuring Detective Leonore Asker and the Department of Lost Souls BTW: I don’t know if anyone ever transferred from the Department of Lost Souls to the Sensitive Cases Division!) Though not mostly set in the city the popular Martin Beck series of novels by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö has several that take place in Malmö (though Beck is chief of the National Murder Squad in Stockholm) For instance the sixth novel in the series Murder at the Savoy (2009) opens when Viktor Palmgren a powerful Swedish industrialist is shot during his after-dinner speech in the luxurious Hotel Savoy in Malmö No one in the restaurant can identify the gunman and local police are baffled so Beck is called in to take over the scene and quickly picks through Palmgren’s background as we are in Malmö we should perhaps make mention of Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander Wallander has of course been a massive success with eleven novels by Mankell Swedish and British TV adaptation (the latter with Kenneth Branagh in Ystad but speaking English) and legions of fans Mankell’s series starts with Faceless Killers (1991) which won the prestigious Glass Key award for Nordic crime writers Inside an almost isolated Skåne (the region of southern Sweden that includes Malmö) farmhouse an old man is tortured to death and his wife Maria savagely beaten and left for dead with a noose around her neck an aging detective with rheumatism; Martinsson forty-something-year-old detective; Hansson and Peters And so starts Wallander’s literary career A dozen or so Wallander novels followed becoming a worldwide sensation and putting Ystad Masthead About Advertisers: Contact Us Privacy Policy Become a member for as low as $5/month Sie haben erfolgreich Ihre Einwilligung in die Nutzung von Transfermarkt mit Tracking und Cookies widerrufen. Most reported antisemitic incidents occur in southern Sweden, meaning Malmö. The capital, Stockholm, and Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg, are marginally lower. According to the study, “Malmö is mentioned in particular, along with suburbs with a large population of Middle Eastern origin.”5 a new form of antisemitism emerged in Sweden Much like the “traditional” form of antisemitism – vehement views about the Jewish people The imported contemporary antisemitism removed the word “Jew” and replaced it with “Zionist” and “Israel.” let us be clear: it is not antisemitic to criticize the Israeli government or the Israeli army nor is it antisemitic to express sympathy with the plight of the people of Gaza; many Jews and Israelis do that The imported form of antisemitism we are witnessing in Sweden is not about criticizing the Israeli government or finding solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Palestine will be free,” a call for the elimination of Israel and the denial of the Jews to exist as people in their own homeland This imported “Middle Eastern” antisemitism is deeply rooted in Jew-hatred whitewashed by pretending to call for a ceasefire as an undergraduate student living in Malmö Sweden’s third largest city and once home to a vibrant Jewish community I would often pass by the city’s first and only synagogue It is a gigantic building with a colorful mixture of Moorish Revival design and Art Nouveau décor making it one of the rare synagogues with that design in Europe when most of them were destroyed during Kristallnacht 1938 Jewish history in Malmö and Sweden goes back centuries The first Jews settled in Sweden at the end of the 17th century the Swedish authorities demanded that they convert to Christianity with many of them settling in major cities like Stockholm Today, many universities across Sweden, including Lund University, Sweden’s most prestigious educational institute, where I graduated, have turned into a hub-of-Hamas front, calling on the university to cut any educational cooperation with Israeli universities.6 As seen across university campuses in the United States some so-called students are outsiders and not students Malmö Synagogue was hit with explosives and was attacked again on September 28 a terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm was thwarted by Swedish security forces The situation for the Jewish community in Malmö is beyond repair, leading to most of the Jews leaving the city. Malmö’s Jewish community has declined radically amid repeated harassment and attacks, mainly by Malmö’s massive Muslim community. Frederik Sieradzki, the spokesman for the Jewish Community of Malmö organization, warns that the “Jewish community could disappear entirely by 2029.12“ According to the Malmö municipality’s data, the city today has a population of 362,133 (December 31, 2023). More than 30% of the city’s population is foreign-born, with Iraq and Syria being the top two most common countries of birth. They are followed by Muslim-majority countries “battling” to be on the top-five list: Lebanon, Iran, Afghanistan, and Bosnia-Hercegovina.13 The number of Jews in Malmö is roughly 500, contrasted with the number of Muslims, which is over 50,000.14 According to the Islamic Center in Malmö as many Muslims choose not to register with a Muslim congregation antisemitism in Sweden came mainly from right-wing extremists with Swedish politicians quickly condemning it when it occurred the sharp rise of antisemitism in Sweden has come mainly from citizens with immigrant-Muslim backgrounds there is immense hesitation from the Swedish government to openly address the issue with many politicians abstaining from tackling it because of the fear of being accused of Islamophobia According to projections by the Pew Research Center, the number of Muslims in Sweden will sharply rise within the coming two decades; Sweden “is projected to have the highest share of Muslims (12.4%) in total population among the Western European countries by 2050.”17 A survey conducted by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), titled “Experience and perception of Antisemitism – factsheet –Sweden,” found “40 % of the cases identified the perpetrator as someone with a Muslim extremist view, 27 % – as someone with a left-wing political view.”18 The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs approached Magnus Sandelin,20 a Swedish journalist and lecturer with many years of experience mapping and examining extremist movements in Sweden Sandelin said the fact there were people in Sweden openly celebrating and hailing Hamas’s October 7 atrocities shows that Sweden has a serious antisemitic problem “People with origins in the Middle East and those who belong to some extreme political camps both on the left and the right.” that most people in Sweden were shocked by the horrific killings Hamas committed against Israeli civilians but this “general sympathy for the Israeli victims turned to the usual accusation that Israel is committing crimes against the population in Gaza.” One of the main reasons for that whom he criticizes and blames for being a contributing factor in whipping up anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiments “Information from Hamas has been uncritically published and often without any verification Perspectives that are critical of Israel are usually chosen and Swedish media rarely place any blame and responsibility on Hamas.” When asked “Why is Swedish media so critical of Israel?” He replied It seems to be in the walls of many newsrooms Perhaps it has to do with a distorted power analysis where Israel is seen as the strong one and the Palestinians as the weak/oppressed.” Maybe unintentionally or maybe not “they are entertaining and playing with the dark forces that want to wipe out the Jewish state.” there have been many protests in Sweden against Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas with many of those protests openly having antisemitic prevalences Sandelin also argued that the younger generation has poor knowledge of the history of the conflict “they adopt a ready-made opinion package in which Israel is falsely portrayed as a colonial power Sandelin shared with us his views about what occurred in Malmö during the Eurovision Song Contest: “What went on there was a massive and merciless manifestation of hatred against Israel and against Jews in general driven mainly by immigrants from countries in the Middle East where antisemitism is legitimate and widespread.” Unfortunately It’s like the boiling frog slowly getting used to the hot water And with many in Sweden failing to understand how seriously dangerous the situation is becoming.” Today in Sweden “Jews feel that they no longer can live in Malmö with many thinking to leave Sweden where Jewish kindergartens and schools must have armed guards Where an Israeli 20-year-old artist (referring to singer Eden Golan) cannot leave her hotel room for fear of being murdered.” “I was ashamed as a Swede and as a human being to see how the mob behaved during Eurovision with boos and bullying against Israel and against Eden Golan.” The fact that Golan’s song Hurricane received the top vote from the Swedish public “shows that most Swedes are on Israel’s side and let’s not forget they are the majority but the boycotters and Israel-haters are just louder,” added Sandelin https://bra.se/om-bra/nytt-fran-bra/arkiv/press/2024-05-02-kraftig-okning-av-antalet-anmalda-antisemitiska-hatbrott-hosten-2023.html↩︎ Ibid↩︎ 16, 2024 – conducted in Swedish.↩︎ Based on a Jane Fallon novel and directed by Guy Unsworth a new show is powered by the Swedish pop duo’s songs Co-founder Per Gessle reflects on Roxette’s arrival at the opera a new jukebox musical featuring a barrage of bangers by Swedish pop royalty Roxette is used to filling huge international arenas with the band’s power ballads and party anthems But when we talk before the musical’s opening night he points out that it is not the first time Roxette has been heard in an opera house – they played Sydney’s in 2015 The difference with a musical is the opportunity to work on such a “grand scale” with a 34-piece orchestra and resident team of craftspeople “I’m happy that they sold so many tickets!” Joyride runs until the end of April but is already close to selling out such is Roxette’s standing as arguably the country’s second biggest band after Abba The duo were in their pomp in the late 80s and early 90s when The Look and Listen to Your Heart became No 1 hits in the US and It Must Have Been Love was rejigged for a scene in Pretty Woman (with Julia Roberts quivering in a limo and Richard Gere brooding on a balcony) “There’s a great sense of nostalgia” for Roxette, says the musical’s British director, Guy Unsworth, who highlights how the death of Fredriksson from cancer in 2019 has also deepened fans’ emotional connection to the music about the younger generation in the audiences who really love it Roxette are a little bit like the band that Mum and Dad love.” drawing on Gessle’s skill at writing pre- and post-breakup songs When Gessle discussed the song list with Unsworth he was surprised that the director suggested they use album tracks such as What’s She Like and The First Girl on the Moon as well as the obvious hits “Songs that I almost forgot about,” laughs Gessle “I was really impressed that he had dug into the catalogue The musical captures the idiosyncratic blend of goofy humour and lovesick melancholia that pop fans associate with the pixieish to the movie that reunited Gere and Roberts Full of in-jokes … Sara Lehmann Sanna Martin and Oscar Pierrou Lindén in Joyride Photograph: Malmo Opera/Martin PaulssonWith a script performed in Swedish (there are English surtitles) the musical keeps some of Fallon’s Britishisms and her locations so its more eccentric moments include a line of Lincoln farmers in wax jackets delivering “na na na”s Some songs do a lot of heavy lifting and it’s best to just ride with the storyline’s implausibilities and savour Joakim Hallin’s arrangements that ramp up the soaring emotions are powerfully delivered in turn by Jessica Marberger and Marsha Songcome playing the two women in the love triangle “A couple of Marie’s big ballads including Queen of Rain are sung by a guy [Alexander Lycke] which is interesting,” says Gessle “Marie sang that about herself basically but [in the musical] he is saying it about a woman.” is a budding singer-songwriter who we see composing a tune on her acoustic guitar who is used to a level of autonomy as a musician trust people and get to know a little bit more about how the musical world works because it’s a different style of singing … My first band came from the new wave scene in the 70s – that’s what’s in my DNA.” Unsworth says he wanted to find a balance between the band’s feelgood “everyone wants to sing and dance along” and the power ballads that “cut to the heart for a lot of people” he wanted to make sure that “the story is moving through the music” rather than the plot being regularly interrupted for song and dance breaks celebrated 25 years in the West End; an estimated 70 million people have seen the Abba musical worldwide Unsworth jokes that friends have asked him: “Is that the sort of little ghost that’s haunting you?” Roxette may not have quite the same reach but Gessle comments on their not-too-shabby monthly Spotify listeners (14.3m) He is about to tour South Africa and Australia with his outfit PG Roxette performing the hits alongside Lena Philipsson Gessle “tried to figure out what to do with the catalogue” he explains One was just to close everything down and let it be; the other was to find a singer who can help me sing the songs and that’s easier said than done.” He and Philipsson talked at length about it “I told her we’re not doing anything new – I’m hiring you to sing Roxette It’s not about creating a new success.” And how does it feel adding rather bashfully: “I wrote these songs I just feel like: why not play them if people want to hear I’m not forcing anyone but the response has been tremendous.” The tour can’t help but be a tribute of sorts to Fredriksson which towards the end features a projection of the singer’s face “I remember buying Jesus Christ Superstar when I was a kid but this is new ground to me,” Gessle says “Marie always liked musicals much more than I did.” Joyride: The Musical is at Malmö Opera until 27 April Football
