In the small town of Mjölby, located in Östergötland County, lies one of Sweden’s most unusual and charming traffic circles: the Potato Roundabout
This small but fascinating roundabout is not only a functional traffic solution but also a tribute to one of the country’s most important agricultural products
The Potato Roundabout (or potatisrondell) is known for the striking statue in the center of the roundabout, which depicts a giant potato
It was built to celebrate and highlight Mjölby’s historical connection to potato cultivation and trade
The town has also hosted several potato-related events over the years
and this roundabout has become a symbol of both local pride and a touch of humor

Mjölby Municipality is analysing the viability of establishing a Food Experience Center
which will offer such interesting exhibitions and events that visitors will be attracted from across Sweden
The purpose of the centre is in part to increase public awareness of Swedish food production and supply
and in part to develop tourism in the municipality of Mjölby and the wider county of Östergötland
the municipality is working to create multiple formal and informal networks connecting businesses
a shared vision is emerging with regard to the activity centre and what form it should take
All the parties are also developing an understanding of how each of them can help to make the centre happen
the purpose of the project is to ensure that the Food Experience Center is built in Väderstad so that it can become centre of excellence for food in Sweden and a national tourist destination
The activity centre can be explained from three perspectives
An illustration sketch of what the area could look like
There will be themed exhibitions for all ages
for example on the links between food and health
A sketch of what the playground Potato Playland could look like
The drive to raise awareness of Swedish food production and supply will include showcases for Vreta Kluster
along with a range of different activities
This is where visitors can learn all about the latest research into food and actively take part in data gathering for various research projects
The aim is to create a research platform to which both the public and academics have access
in order to establish research that forms close ties between the two groups
restaurants and a hotel will make up the visitor centre itself

It feels like time passes a little faster at certain times of the year
Summer was over in a flash and we are now settling back into our normal routines
a summer has passed and many thoughts have had time to mature
We are taking on the autumn’s activities with new energy and inspiration
Comprehensive plans and detailed development plans are currently being developed for the intended site next to Väderstad
A comprehensive plan is out for consultation
and the municipality’s city planners coming to Väderstad to speak more about future plans
During the same event the project group will be presenting the latest news concerning the Food Expeerience Centre as well as asking people to join a working group focusing on Väderstad
The municipality is drawing up a detailed development plan for the site
as required in order for the first building to be constructed
we are holding consultation meetings with the County Administrative Board
which is also one of the driving forces behind the processes for determining how the site will be developed
We have previously mentioned that a video has been produced to more clearly visualise the vision that we have for the site
This film has now been translated into English and accessible features allow for audio description
Contact Caroline Davidsson if you would like access to the video
We are continuing work on creating detailed information for interested parties who wish to set up business on site
The areas that will be focused on and explored over the autumn are a market analysis for the establishment of a hotel
and an update of a previously made feasibility study for the tourism industry
Our project organisation remains relatively small
so we are always on the lookout for financing opportunities that can bridge the period until construction begins
We have submitted a project application in response to Vinnova’s call for proposals regarding “A new recipe for the food system in Sweden”
We will also be receiving funding from the region’s organisation for the promotion of enterprise and investment
in order to complete some of the information activities we are planning for in the autumn
It is always a pleasure to receive enquiries from organisations that are interested in learning more about the Food Experience Centre
we will be presenting the project to Rotary in Mjölby
Naturum Tåkern and Vreta Kluster when they receive a delegation from Region Kalmar
We also have plans for a study trip to other tourism hubs in Sweden
to learn and benefit from their experience
but also to broaden our network and find more partners for the project
with a mutual exchange of ideas and experiences in the future
we would like to announce our next working group meeting on 23-24 November in Mjölby
which will include interesting talks on destination development
The meeting will be held at cost price and hopefully we will be able to include a field visit to Väderstad
More information on this will be provided at a later date – so keep your eyes peeled
If you have any tips and ideas that you would like to send to the project team
the mega-chain now counts with 55 charging stations around the scandinavian country
the expansion of charging stations continues as mcdonald’s aims to include charging stations at all its drive-thru restaurants.
according to a survey conducted by mcdonald’s
48% of electric car drivers say it is difficult to find charging stations
to make this transition more visible and to lift the need for continued expansion of charging infrastructure along the roads
mcdonald’s updated its classic signpost
leveraging on its high visibility and easiness to recognize form afar
in an effort to make it easier for people travelling in electric cars to find charging stations
mcdonald’s has produced its own version of classic ‘parking signs’ that lead the electric car traveler to the restaurants’ charging stations
the first signs have been installed by mcdonald’s restaurants in mjölby and munkedal
in addition to the current price of charging
the signs also show the current price of big mac and happy meal
so that both drivers and passengers can refill their own energy while the car is charging
mcdonald’s has frequently been involved in the development of charging infrastructure along roads in sweden
more and more people are choosing to travel by electric vehicles
and the restaurant feels the responsibility to be a part of sustainable choices
‘our sign is a new and fun take on a classic way of doing just that‘

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
MacDonalds is now listing charging current prices for EV drivers wanting to recharge
Below the very visible glowing “M” now stands EV charging prices along with the Big Mac and Happy Meal on MacDonald’s digital display boards
the digital displays showing charging prices have been developed by the Nord DDB agency can be found at the McDonald’s restaurants in Mjölby and Munkedal
“McDonald’s has a strong history of being involved in the development of charging infrastructure along Sweden’s roads,” said Christoffer Rönnblad
marketing director at McDonald’s Sweden
“More and more people are choosing to travel by electric vehicles
and we want to be a part of this trend by inspiring good choices
Our sign is a new and fun take on a classic way of doing just that.”
So far, McDonald’s has set up 55 charging stations for electric cars across Sweden. This seemingly fortuitous prospect has already been taken up at MacDonalds branches with Vattenfall in the Netherlands too
Using the prominent signage seems like a win-win
MacDonalds is perfectly situated to capitalise on its existing infrastructure
now they can capitalise on the need for visible charging stations with their Golden Arches logo
The logo resembling an “M” for “McDonald’s” was introduced in 1968 and is now widely regarded as one of the most recognisable logos in the world
If the Golden Arches become synonymous for charging station
EV drivers will have a very prominent signage to help find a quick charge
I can’t imagine that fossil fuel filling stations are very happy about this development

Pirate Bay co-founder Fredrik Neij (aka "Tiamo") has lost his effort to keep an original Nintendo in his cell while serving time at the Skänninge prison in Mjölby in central Sweden
Expressen (Google Translate) quoted the Swedish Prison and Probation Service as saying in its decision:
The console is sealed in such a way that it can not be opened without the machine being destroyed
the institution implements the necessary control of the game console and it is therefore impossible to ensure that this does not contain prohibited items
Ars contacted the Service but did not immediately receive a reply
UPDATE April 23 8:04am: The Service responded with the full Swedish language correspondence, which we have posted here
The Swedish newspaper also quoted from Neij’s appeal
in which he argued that a 30-year-old gaming console poses absolutely no threat to security
"That the institution lacks a screwdriver which costs 100 kroner [$11.50] cannot be considered reasonable," Neij wrote, according to TorrentFreak
The French newspaper Libération (Google Translate) went to Skänninge in February 2015
describing it as one of the country’s largest penal institutions (holding just 234 prisoners) in Sweden but noted that it looks more like a dormitory with barbed wire around it than a high-security facility
Neij famously flaunted a Swedish arrest warrant while publicly living in Laos (although his Facebook profile states he lives in Bangkok) following his conviction for aiding copyright infringement. In 2013, he famously told a Swedish filmmaker: "I can sit here and jerk off for five years
Neij’s arrest marks the third and final member of the remaining Swedish defendants who were originally convicted in 2009 for aiding copyright infringement. All members have lost all their appeals since. The men claim to no longer own The Pirate Bay

US star Lenny Kravitz is not only known in Sweden for his long track record of creating rock, funk, R&B and so on mega hits, as well as accidentally ripping his trousers in a very unfortunate place during a legendary concert at Stockholm's Gröna Lund in 2015
he might also be known for his opinions on the city of Motala
He told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet in an interview that he dated a girl from Motala in his youth
I met her while recording Mama Said and we dated for a few years
And everyone had flowers outside their windows."
A lot of Swedes found it amusing that Motala had not left a bigger impression on the star than "a lot of potatoes"
when frankly it's even more amusing that it had left an impression at all
but it's not exactly known as the city of rock'n'roll
The city of some 30,000 people is situated in Östergötland
a fertile part of Sweden with a big agricultural industry
travel just 20 minutes south and its neighbouring town of Mjölby has a giant potato statue on display at one of its roundabouts
