The tragedy in Mölndal made headlines across Europe the Daily Mail branded it “the city destroyed by immigration” claiming it was facing a “rising migrant crime wave” its streets “at the mercy of gangs of young men” Sweden’s embassy in London subsequently complained that the newspaper was conducting a campaign against the country’s liberal asylum policy “Coverage of the killing was media pornography at its worst,” says Birgitta Korpe head of the unaccompanied child and adolescents unit in Mölndal It needed to be handled with more humanity and dignity.” who says she was was interviewed by the Mail says she refuted the paper’s claims but that her response was ignored chief of police for the Gothenburg district says the Mail’s reports about refugee crime were “quite an exaggeration” Syrian children outside the Swedish Migration Board in Märsta Sweden took more than half the 69,000 unaccompanied minors who came to the EU in 2015 Photograph: Jessica Gow/APAn immediate result of the change in attitudes and policy in Sweden has been a precipitous decline in the arrival of new refugees Mölndal was caring for 700 unaccompanied refugee children; now it is 20 private care companies who provided accommodation now see their investments lying idle sometimes at huge cost to municipalities who are locked in to continuing payments Yet Mölndal is preparing for a renewed surge of refugees a policy Korpe describes as “trying to brake and accelerate at the same time – we are so uncertain what will happen saw four times the expected numbers of unaccompanied minors in 2015 “We had to scrap the normal bureaucracy and just fix it It was an extraordinary situation,” says Marina Johansson a city councillor responsible for refugee accommodation Every week we delivered new ideas and solutions.” After the photo emerged of Alan Kurdi the three-year-old Syrian refugee who drowned when the boat he was in capsized in the Mediterranean “There have been arson attacks on refugee accommodation lots of articles about sexual assaults by unaccompanied children – and then the murder in Mölndal.” A ‘Refugees Welcome’ demonstration in Gothenburg in September 2015 Photograph: Scanpix Sweden/ReutersThe political climate has complicated the city’s plan to spread new arrivals around rather than send them to areas that already have a high concentration of immigrants In some schools no pupils are native Swedish speakers requires Gothenburg to find apartments for 880 refugees in 2016 as part of a policy of forcibly dispersing refugees around the country Recent public meetings in Gothenburg held to discuss these plans have seen huge turnouts of sceptical The city already has an acute housing shortage after years of under-investment and there is widespread fury that resources are being directed at refugees have seen rival campaigns spring up for and against proposed new asylum accommodation Johansson says the construction of 2,700 new apartments began last year – the highest level for 40 years – and there has been a steady rise in house building since 2010 “We have said we don’t want to build more segregation,” Johansson says However, total housing starts in the city over the past five years are only 20% higher than in the first five years of this century, official figures show, and less than half the pace of construction in the early 1970s. Sweden expects to receive another 100,000 asylum seekers this year if numbers pick up again in the summer, with some 6,000 coming to Gothenburg – including another 1,600 minors. The city is moving towards housing all children in council-controlled accommodation, in partnership with the non-profit sector. Please upgrade your browser or activate Google Chrome Frame to improve your experience From the outside looking in, the trail networks that infiltrate the city of Gothenburg are indistinguishable when you move from one to another. This is just one of many reasons why hiring an expert local guide is the best bang for your MTB buck here in Sweden (check out this article for more info) But thanks to this killer map from Leo Ranta, and asking over and over again exactly where we were on the trail, I was slowly able to get a grasp on what types of trails each individual area held. And the Molndal Area was one of my favorites My Molndal experience was another installment in Leo’s series of ongoing group rides Leo has been organizing group rides in Gothenburg for 12 years now he’s arranged about three rides per week on an average of 46 weeks per year That puts him somewhere north of 1,500 group rides that he’s led The rides always meet at the same place: Fransson’s curtain shop no one’s complained about anywhere from a handful to a hundred riders descending upon the curtain shop parking lot right about closing time about a dozen guys gathered for the group ride While one guy was proudly rocking a fat bike everyone else was riding full suspension trail and enduro bikes with plenty of boing to go around—a testament to the immense technicality of the riding in Gothenburg After a few minutes spent standing around exchanging introductions and talking about bikes and trails we decided that everyone who was riding had arrived instead of feeling like we were totally disconnected from the rest of the world riding in Molndal felt more like we were riding in and around Gothenburg—in a good way We crossed several roads as we moved from one trail to the next swooping singletrack next to a stream and just across from some buildings As we climbed to the top of a slickrock bald we were treated to sweeping views of the city below us including Gothia Towers and Liseberg Amusement Park Even the trails themselves were unique from Skatas To begin our transition into Molndal from Skatas/Delsjon we stopped over at the largest rock roll feature that Leo and company has discovered in the region I had been waiting all week to experience this rock roll which I’d seen in at least a couple of Leo and Natasja’s photos before it looked way larger than I had envisioned it—of course Compared to doing rock rolls in a place like Moab or Colorado where generally the feature is open and airy with an easy run out finishing with a narrow escape at the bottom between a pair of tall pine trees standing sentinel over our shenanigans it looks intimidating as you stand around and shoot photos but eventually everyone worked up the nerve to try it—with several guys going back to drop it with more and more speed transitioning through some flowy singletrack to the Slickrocks trail While many of the trails around Gothenburg feature domed sections of bedrock the Slickrocks trail takes it to the Nth degree rippled slickrock that provides fantastic grip and—in my opinion—a breath of fresh air from all of the roots The ground is generally very soggy in the transitions from rock to rock since all of the water rolls straight off the rock and pools in the low places but overall we ripped along at high speeds whooping and hollering and making sure to stop to snap some photos While there were many junctions in the Molndal Area similar to Skatas All week long I’d been running myself ragged trying to keep up with Leo but after getting together with a larger group of riders I realized that yes but I wasn’t the only one trying—and failing—to hang on to Leo’s wheel Leo has become a legendary mountain biking figure in West Sweden–so much so that he’s been a topic of conversation on Swedish mountain bike forums People always want to know what the pace of Leo’s rides are “fast.” Generally it’s a no-drop experience but don’t be surprised if you roll up to the group and they’ve been sessioning a rock feature for 10 minutes before you arrived Getting to mix it up with a few other riders in the pack was refreshing and offered a glimpse into Sweden’s mountain biking culture That glimpse showed that it’s just like anywhere else I’ve been: mountain biking forms a bond between passionate riders of all walks of life Day 5 – Delsjön/Mölndal area, Sweden from HillsideCycling on Vimeo I’ve been accused of not being a culinary expert before those accusers were on point: I’m not a food critic I can hardly cook a frozen pizza without burning it What I am is an expert mountain biker So when it comes to relating my dining experiences I can only tell you what I experienced and felt for myself the best seafood I’ve ever tasted was at Restaurang Gabriel in Gothenburg Restaurang Gabriel is located in an upstairs loft overlooking the Fish Church The Fish Church is an experience in and of itself with fresh seafood out of the nearby ocean on display But if you want to sit down and have a meal there grew up working at the restaurant and took over the business from his father and simply served us what he thought we’d enjoy—both food and drink When he found out that I’m a lover of fine beers he paraded some of Sweden’s best in front of me insisting that I try several of his favorites The strong porter from Grebbestad was absolutely delicious and I also enjoyed a few more brews from Ocean along with a couple other breweries that I hadn’t tried before While the craft beer scene is on the rise around much of the world few places are as developed as my home state of Colorado I was delighted to finally sup at a Gothenburg restaurant that knew its beer and had a good selection no restaurant bested the beers found at Gabriel The main reason to visit this establishment is he may be the most knowledgeable connoisseur of seafood I’ll ever meet in my entire life Not only was he raised working at the restaurant and can divine the differences in oyster taste based on water quality the best oysters in the world come from the sea right outside of Gothenburg Johan has a few personal suppliers who are some of best oyster pickers around and he purchases the vast majority of the oysters that they pick It was my first time eating an oyster and I have to say Since this was my first exposure to oysters I’m not going to write them off completely followed by beautifully-presented crayfish While this wasn’t my first time eating crayfish on this journey Restaurang Gabriel’s was definitely the best For most of my stay I slept in the newest of the Gothia Towers. Gothia Towers is a hotel in the middle of Gothenburg comprised of three skyscrapers—the tallest of which is the tallest building in Gothenburg While it’s hard to imagine a hotel so radically different from Tidbloms I found Gothia to feel like my home away from home almost immediately Modern styling and technology has been built into every facet of the room that I stayed in The tower that I was in had just been built the previous year and in fact some of the conference rooms were still under construction The room was so modern that I had to call the front desk to figure out how to turn the lights on which has an RFID chip instead of a standard magnetic strip This activates the lights and air conditioning in the room—meaning that if you leave and assuming you remember to take your key card with you This is just one of many ways that I found Swedes to be environmentally-minded Almost every toilet I saw in Sweden was a high-efficiency model with two flush choices (small and large) to help you manually conserve water After talking with Leo and Natasja about it I learned that Sweden is so efficient at processing trash that they import trash from other countries Unique facilities allow them to actually burn the refuse to generate electricity instead of burning fossil fuels like coal and just burying the trash underground they have excellent recycling facilities as well and windmills cover the landscape of the windy interior So Gothia Towers does their part to conserve as well I found the food and the service to both be fantastic the totally-free wifi was blazing fast—faster than I have at home and putting every hotel I’ve stayed at in the US to shame Pro tip: you may want to avoid staying at the Towers when there’s a music festival just down the street I felt sorry for the havoc that was wreaked in the course of two chaotic days on the brand-new tower it was remarkable how clean and tidy the staff made the common areas you couldn’t even tell that a group of drunk frat boys and without a lick of facial hair between them had torn the ceiling out of an elevator right as it opened in front of me on the ground floor So kudos to the patient hotel staff for putting up with that mayhem As mentioned in my overview of Gothenburg amenities Gothia Towers is also conveniently close to Liseberg Amusement Park and the restaurants and bars located in the hotel itself it’s a great place to base your Gothenburg experience Enter your email for the top stories in mountain biking plus product picks and deals delivered to your inbox each week A new European research project will investigate how shared and electric cargo bikes can help reduce private car use in several European cities “This project will help accelerate transitions to low carbon mobility in small medium and large size cities,” says Devon McAslan researcher in sustainable transport and mobility at Chalmers contributes to sustainable mobility transitions by exploring how shared and electric cargo bikes can supplement and even replace private car use increase access to different activities and shopping in more car dependent neighborhoods The project is part of the Driving Urban Transitions partnership focused on the "15-minute city" transition pathway, which aims to rethink existing mobility systems and urban development to enable more sustainable transportation choices. Car-goNE-City will use a series of participatory approaches that engage citizens directly in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of shared cargo bike mobility. The specific goals of the project include: Cities involved include Gothenburg, Mölndal, Trollhättan (Sweden), Olso (Norway), Karlsruhe and Konstanz (Germany), and Budapest (Hungary). Will support cities in their transport planning and environmental work Car-goNE City focuses on engagement with decision makers and will provide research that supports cities in their work. Public sector partners will benefit from the applied research approaches, development of new metrics, and new participation tools. Car-goNE City will contribute to research on the mobility impacts and acceptance of cargo bikes as a transportation solution to reduce car use and associated environmental impacts. Among the partners in Sweden, their hope is to develop a long-term plan for shared cargo bike mobility that enables urban residents to be less car dependent. A main focus of the project in Sweden is on cargo bike pilot projects, which will take place in Mölndal and in Trollhӓttan and will explore how cargo bikes can reduce private car use, as well as the need to build parking in new housing developments. The project is a partnership with Oslo Metropolitan University, Budapest University of Technology, and Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, as well as several municipalities, mobility operators, and technology companies. In Sweden, this includes project partners Trollhättans Stad, Kraftstaden, and Mölndalsbostäder, as well as Göteborgs Stad and Västtrafik as additional participants. On the technology side, the start-up Metvibee will be participating to further develop an interactive participatory urban design tool. The project also includes German partner Takomat, which has developed the award winning MobileCityGame. Other participating public agencies include Stadt Konztanz in Germany and BKK transit agency in Budapest, Hungary. Lastly, the projects includes those developing cargo bike mobility solutions: TINK and Lastenkarle in Germany, and Whee! in Norway. with a new laboratory collaboration arena that will be established at GoCo Health Innovation City in Mölndal The rapid development of advanced cell and gene therapies as well as experience from the mRNA vaccines show the great potential of these new treatments new technologies are needed for the development of mRNA-based drugs The purpose of establishing Chalmers Precision HealthTech Hub at GoCo Health Innovation City in Mölndal (which will be completed in 2026) is to offer analysis and development services infrastructure in the form of equipment and a creative interdisciplinary meeting place that will contribute to the development of the next generation of medicines Together with other initiatives in the field this will give West Sweden increased opportunities for patients to receive qualified care and treatment which strengthens the Life Science cluster in the region and nationally The planning phase has now been granted support from the Environment and Regional Development Committee in the Västra Götaland region This means that Chalmers will proceed with the plans for an establishment at GoCo in 2026 "I am pleased to see how the results of interdisciplinary, long-term and fundamental research will be utilised by offering expertise and services to research, companies and healthcare," says Fredrik Höök, Professor of Biophysics and Director of the FormulaX research centre which has been conducting method development and research in the field for almost seven years "The initiative will also create continued opportunities to conduct high-quality research and method development of the highest relevance to society." "This is an important step on the way to realising Chalmers Precision HealthTech Hub," says Mats Lundqvist "By developing new technologies linked to mRNA-based drugs Chalmers can contribute to the safe and precise drugs of the future for the benefit of both patients and West Sweden's Life Science system." "It is very positive that West Sweden is building a strong cluster of companies and businesses that are driving the development of precision medicine and advanced therapy drugs Life Science is an area of strength for our region and important for both regional development and healthcare," says Helena Lundberg Nilsson Akademiliv the IngaBritt and Arne Lundberg Research Foundation has invested heavily in orthopedic research in Gothenburg something that has been crucial for bringing orthopedics together and allowing the field to flourish Join us on a visit to the recently completed R Building at Mölndal Hospital The R Building is bathed in sunlight during my visit to Mölndal Hospital on this chilly October morning the building has been home to highly specialized research which stretches out like a wave-shaped extension The R Building is a joint teaching resource for all of Sahlgrenska University Hospital and brings together the University’s orthopedics-related work Subject representative Professor Ola Rolfson notes that the R Building realized a long-term strategy of bringing together education and research “Under the research unit in the R Building and equipment that were previously spread across the hospital It is a clear resource for anyone working with research It has also strengthened the link between clinic and research the organization’s management at both the hospital and the University now sit in the same corridor and everyone who works clinically is encouraged to also participate in research,” says Ola Rolfson as he guides me through the bright and airy premises The letter R in the name of the building could be said to stand for research Back research has a long and successful history in Gothenburg where research is ongoing on how the muscles in the lumbar part of the back work and how to improve different surgical methods such as using laparoscopy for herniated discs Biochemical back research is also conducted on herniated discs and how the discs of the back can be stimulated to regenerate The R Building also hosts both a biomechanical laboratory where researchers and others study how much load a hip joint or a vertebra can withstand and muscles can be studied from different aspects The Swedish Fracture Register is also administered from here which is full of technology to measure and analyze patient movement patterns: a large number of cameras Animated 3D models of filmed patients are created and analyzed with sensors attached to strategic places on the body The Gait Lab was originally located in the Unit for Orthopedic Technology in Örgryte and then moved to the Lundberg Laboratory in the Sahlgrenska area Thanks to grants from the Lundberg Foundation it has now moved into specially adapted premises in the R Building have also received large grants from the Lundberg Foundation making it possible to upgrade the instruments the Lundberg Foundation has awarded grants of around SEK 7 million which paid for the purchase of the EOS advanced imaging instrument This large instrument has now been fully installed in the X-ray Department The instrument will be used widely in research and is predicted to have enormous importance for the orthopedics department researchers can now create a three-dimensional image of the entire skeleton which would require several images with traditional technology that would then also need to be combined manually The radiation dose is only 20 percent compared with conventional x-rays In addition to this instrument saving a lot of time and being considerably easier on patients it also allows imaging patients standing or sitting “When we conduct examinations with computer tomography to obtain an accurate picture of the load on images need to be taken while patients are standing or walking The equipment will be widely used in orthopedic research such as for examinations of scoliosis in both children and adults and after treating fractures,” says Henrik Malchau Interest in using the new technologies in research is considerable it is only available for imaging for research purposes it is hoped that significantly more patients can be imaged with EOS An adjacent room has another advanced three-dimensional x-ray technology: RSA (radiostereometric analyses) The technology means that small metal markers are surgically inserted into patient prostheses are registered with ordinary x-rays in two projections which are then used to calculate three-dimensional movements and micro-movements of hip and knee joint prostheses in particular The Lundberg Foundation was established in 1982 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year Orthopedic research in western Sweden is a priority area for the research foundation Ortopedin became the recipient of the first large grant which came from a donation by the couple IngaBritt and Arne Lundberg several large contributions from the Lundberg Foundation have made it possible for the orthopedics department in Gothenburg to pool resources “Before the grants from the Lundberg Foundation The first donation meant we could update our biomechanical laboratory and in the 1990s we received very generous funding to establish the Lundberg Laboratory for Orthopedic Research orthopedic research was brought together under a single unit in the Sahlgrenska area,” says Björn Rydevik “It is not possible to emphasize enough how important the Lundberg Foundation has been for the strong position that orthopedic research has today in Gothenburg We are extremely happy and grateful for this.” By: The newsletter from Akademiliv
