Area 4,496 square miles (11,646 square km)
ever eager to indulge in their exceptionalist fantasies
have long believed that their constitutional system is a model of restraint
that the document framed in Philadelphia in 1787 provides a bulwark against despotism
held with the conviction of religious dogma
The fear gripping much of the American public is unprecedented in modern times
and his barely veiled threats to jail political opponents suggest that he intends to govern with even fewer constraints than before
but rather the legal and constitutional architecture that makes his ambitions entirely plausible
Americans have comforted themselves with the notion that legal safeguards will prevent executive abuses
Trump’s first term already exposed these supposed checks as flimsy and illusory
that lofty guardian of constitutional principle
signaled its willingness to accommodate even the most dubious assertions of executive authority
where it upheld his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority nations
presented in the language of legal neutrality
an endorsement of raw executive power grounded in malice exercised with the flimsiest of national security pretexts
Even more troubling is the president’s nearly unchecked pardon power
a feature of the Constitution that appears to have played itself out less as a tool of justice than as a safeguard against justice itself
where executive clemency is subject to legislative oversight or review
president wields an absolute pardon power that can be deployed with impunity
ever the enthusiastic beneficiary of this system
has already provided a preview of how he intends to wield this authority
and signaled to future accomplices that obedience will be met with absolution
This is not an abstraction; it is a functional dismantling of the rule of law
who also ruled under the illusion of constitutional restraint
established a blueprint for executive overreach that has since become standard practice
with Cheney and a cadre of legal functionaries such as John Yoo
built an entire infrastructure of extrajudicial detention
The administration pushed through the USA PATRIOT Act
which vastly expanded government spying powers
instituted extraordinary rendition programs to outsource torture
and established the legal black hole of Guantanamo Bay—where detainees were held indefinitely without trial
subjected to “enhanced interrogation” methods that bore an uncanny resemblance to medieval torture techniques
The mere specter of terrorism was used to justify an unprecedented erosion of civil liberties
that ancient safeguard against arbitrary detention
once an anathema to constitutional governance
The National Security Agency (NSA) was effectively unleashed on the American public
collecting phone records and metadata en masse
The Bush administration’s legal theory was simple: the president
could do virtually anything in the name of fighting terrorism
including violating the Constitution itself
The lesson was clear: when an administration insists that national security demands extraordinary measures
constitutional restraints become little more than a formality
The same deference afforded to Bush and Cheney—where the courts
and Congress played their roles as passive spectators—now sets the stage for Trump’s second act
Where Bush justified indefinite detention and torture
Trump justifies political retribution and purges of the civil service
Where Bush invoked national security to bypass legal protections
Trump invokes the same rationale to circumvent democratic norms
The public may have been disturbed by the authoritarian overreach of the Bush years
ensuring that future presidents—especially one with as little regard for the rule of law as Trump—could inherit the same tools with far fewer constraints
the judiciary has repeatedly reinforced the notion that when it comes to foreign affairs
executive power is not to be questioned—even in cases involving grave human rights violations such as genocide
In Defense for Children International-Palestine v
a federal court in California faced a case that should have
government accountable for providing military aid to Israel
alleging that American tax dollars were facilitating genocide and war crimes in Gaza
reaffirming that even in the face of credible allegations of complicity in atrocities
The logic of deference is almost plenary when national security and state secrets are invoked
the Supreme Court ruled that the CIA’s use of torture at a secret “black site” was a matter too sensitive for public scrutiny
sought only to depose the contractors responsible for his abuse
ensured that his case would never see the light of day
invoking the ever-expansive doctrine of state secrets
is that other nations have already acknowledged and compensated victims of CIA torture
The European Court of Human Rights forced Poland to pay Zubaydah damages
and Lithuania was similarly compelled to compensate another detainee
But in the United States—the nation that orchestrated these abuses—accountability remains as elusive as ever
The belief that the Constitution inherently protects against despotism has always been an illusion
From slavery and the genocide of Indigenous peoples to Jim Crow
the “war on terror,” and repression of dissent against Israeli genocide
American history reveals that power consistently trumps justice
The Constitution has not been a shield against oppression
but a legal instrument easily bent to serve the ambitions of those who wield authority
is merely the latest and most explicit beneficiary of this system
The crisis of American democracy is not that it has failed to live up to its ideals

We have a serious emigration issue in South Africa’s corporate leadership landscape
But when it comes to the people who want to be engaged citizens
who want to stay in South Africa and make a difference – I think that the GSB has a hugely important role to play
In developing and shaping the productive capacity of the nation
that is one thing that the GSB is doing is doing right
We should be reaching into every single one of those corporates
Let us create that grounding and that network and improve your competencies and expand your capacity
And provide the people who can mentor that process
I helped run a business managing R10bn of private equity investments
I’ve often sat in someone’s chair and said: Hey
And that help came from a fraternity of people
and who were accessible to me by virtue of that network
and the GSB should continue to provide that because they have access to hundreds
if not thousands of people in a myriad of sectors
in different locations around the world and at differing stages of their careers and lives
The fundamentals still run true – so if you are in a generalist position and you are thinking about the next breakthrough then the MBA will still give you the skills and the frames of reference to make sense of what you are going to see if you take a step back and look at the bigger picture
growing up there were 70,000 people living in there
my reference point was actually quite small
And it’s different now because people have access to the internet
can travel and live in different areas but when you arrive at an MBA and you meet people and live through their experiences
It certainly broadened my world and my level of curiosity on many topics even outside of business that I didn’t know I was interested in
You also gain a real perspective of the world and how our challenges are similar to other emerging markets and learn about how the choices they have made and what impact it has had (for better or worse)
It’s putting you into stressful team situations to see how you react
I love that learned so much about myself beyond the business
And it also shifted my understanding of the concept of abundance,
And that made me think about what I could do as acts of gratitude in my career
And there were a lot of things that I ended up doing because I could see the impact that you could have

With these powerful messages in mind, MANCOSA hosted the Annual Dr Mahomed “Chota” Motala Memorial Lecture, which was held at MANCOSA’s Durban Campus on 29 November. The theme of this year’s lecture was: The time is now to serve humanity. A social justice perspective.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
points out that the lecture is an important part of the fabric of MANCOSA and South Africa and always focuses on social justice
a cause Dr Motala was passionate about and advocated for throughout his life
The annual memorial lecture is held to commemorate the life and contributions of the late Dr Motala and to celebrate his courage and leadership as a political activist
The lecture also celebrates him as an intellectual and caring medical professional who selflessly served communities of activists and countless struggle heroes
Dr Motala also mentored many activists whose ideas and thinking were shaped by the political education they received during some of the most difficult years of the liberation struggle
intellect and commitment to the development of the less privileged are virtues that MANCOSA aims to embody through its value system
“The lecture is important to MANCOSA because Dr Motala stood for the same principles as MANCOSA’s founder, the late Professor Yusuf Karodia
Their commitment to education and the development of the less privileged are virtues that all South Africans should stand for
national dialogue is key to nation-building,” says Goga
This year’s lecture was delivered by Professor Thuli Madonsela who has become a beacon of hope in the fight for equality through the eradication of corruption within South Africa
“Prof Madonsela has become the people’s champion by exposing corruption and beginning the process of prosecuting those who participate in it
She provided key insights into the journey of South Africa from the birth of democracy until now and the future that we can look forward to as South Africans,” says Goga
MANCOSA started as an empowerment initiative in the post-apartheid era
aimed at providing accessible management education to those once marginalised
Registered under the Higher Education Act (Act 101 of 1997)
the institution has evolved over its 29-year journey
expanding its reach and mission to stand today as a beacon of quality higher education for all
MANCOSA was accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC)
an esteemed quality committee under the Council on Higher Education (CHE)
MANCOSA is a prominent provider of 57 accredited programmes
He adds that MANCOSA is committed to leading this debate through national dialogue and platforms such as the Dr Mahomed “Chota” Motala Memorial Lecture
“The boxing legend Muhammad Ali once said that the man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life
We must reflect on our past but cannot be fixated on it
This is why the lecture is an important platform and is very dear to MANCOSA,” says Goga
Goga points out that the values of both Dr Motala and Prof Karodia will be highlighted
“Dr Motala and Prof Karodia were figures who offered hope in a very uncertain world
The values of equality and championing the rights of marginalised sectors of society will always be a feature
It will be interesting to see how technology is reflected in future lectures
particularly given that while tech will influence the education landscape
it can widen inequality gaps if not managed responsibly,” says Goga

US star Lenny Kravitz is not only known in Sweden for his long track record of creating rock, funk, R&B and so on mega hits, as well as accidentally ripping his trousers in a very unfortunate place during a legendary concert at Stockholm's Gröna Lund in 2015
he might also be known for his opinions on the city of Motala
He told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet in an interview that he dated a girl from Motala in his youth
I met her while recording Mama Said and we dated for a few years
And everyone had flowers outside their windows."
A lot of Swedes found it amusing that Motala had not left a bigger impression on the star than "a lot of potatoes"
when frankly it's even more amusing that it had left an impression at all
but it's not exactly known as the city of rock'n'roll
The city of some 30,000 people is situated in Östergötland
a fertile part of Sweden with a big agricultural industry
travel just 20 minutes south and its neighbouring town of Mjölby has a giant potato statue on display at one of its roundabouts

Sweden (AP) — A new plastics sorting facility inaugurated in Sweden on Wednesday is being billed as the largest of its kind
and one designed to double the amount of plastic packaging materials being recycled in the Nordic country
the Site Zero plant in the central city of Motala can sort up to 200,000 tons of plastic packaging a year
a non-profit company co-owned by Swedish plastics
The company says that’s more than any other sorting facility in the world
A unique feature of Site Zero is that it can separate up to 12 different types of plastic
An old plant at the same location could only sort 5 types of plastic
which meant that only 47% of the material was sent on for recycling and the rest was incinerated
The new plant will be able to send up to 95% of the packaging for recycling
Burning plastic has a climate impact by adding greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere
The world produces more than 430 million tons of plastic annually
two-thirds of which are short-lived products that soon become waste
working their way into the human food chain
Environment Program said in an April report
Plastic waste produced globally is set to triple by 2060
with about half ending up in landfill and under one-fifth recycled
Efforts to create a landmark treaty to end global plastic pollution are taking place in Kenya’s capital
environmentalists and others affected by the pollution are gathered for U.N.-backed negotiations
the roar of the machines is deafening as conveyor belts carry 40 tons per hour of mixed plastic waste through the entrails of the factory
yogurt containers or white polystyrene progress across the 60,000 square-meter complex
separated by size and sorted in a fully automated process reliant on infrared cameras
of the Swedish Environment Protection Agency
but that they actually believe there is finally a market” for all 12 types of plastic sorted by the plant
a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Center
said Sweden is “ahead of the curve” when it comes to plastics recycling
and that waste management in many other parts of the world has a long way to go
“A closed loop for plastics has to be the end goal
plastics treaty that’s being negotiated now,” he said
“And that means that every stage along the plastic lifecycle
basically the emissions moving through these life stages need to be reduced to zero.”
plastic can be recycled in the conventional
mechanical way or via a chemical recycling method
which typically uses heat or chemical solvents to break down plastics into liquid and gas to produce an oil-like mixture or basic chemicals
Industry leaders say that mixture can be made back into plastic pellets to make new products
But environmental groups say that chemical
recycling is a distraction from real solutions like producing and using less plastic
Philipsson said that even though the more efficient sorting facility will help raise the amount of plastic being recycled in Sweden
it will also depend on households properly separating their waste
“Most plastics are still incinerated because they haven’t been sorted by households,” he said

turned out to be a day of profound anguish and sorrow for many around the world
news of the death of Mawlana* Yusuf Sulayman Motala
fondly known as “Hazrat” (his eminence) to those who were acquainted with him
He had passed away on Sunday at 8:20 pm EST in Toronto
after suffering a heart attack two weeks earlier
A pioneer in the establishment of a religious education system
His death reverberated through hearts and across oceans
We are all mourning the loss of a luminary who guided us through increasingly difficult times
fondly known as “Hazrat” (his eminence) to those who were acquainted with him
(May the Almighty envelope him in His mercy)
His journey in this world had begun more than 70 years ago in the small village of Nani Naroli in Gujarat
1946 (1 Muharram 1366) into a family known for their piety
All it takes is a small gift from a reader like you to keep us going
His early studies were largely completed at Jami’a Husayniyya
the second oldest seminary of the Indian Sub-Continent
What drew him to this seminary was the presence of one of the most influential and well-known contemporary spiritual guides
better known as “Hazrat Shaykh.” He had seen Mawlana Zakariyya only briefly at a train stop
but it was enough for him to understand the magnitude of his presence
Mawlana Yusuf remained in Saharanpur for two years
Despite being younger than many of the other students of Shaykh Zakariya
Shaykh Zakariya showered him with great attention and even deferred his retirement from teaching Sahih al-Bukhari so that Mawlana Yusuf could study it under his instruction
Mawlana Yusuf also studied under a number of other great scholars
such as Mawlana Muhammad ‘Aqil (author of Al-Durr al-Mandud
an Urdu commentary of Sunan Abi Dawud and current head lecturer of Hadith at the same seminary)
1438/2017) the previous head lecturer of Hadith there)
Mawlana Yusuf’s marriage was arranged to marry a young woman from the Limbada family that had migrated to the United Kingdom from Gujarat
he relocated to the UK and accepted the position of imam at Masjid Zakariya
Although he longed to be in the company of his shaykh
he had explicit instructions to remain in the UK and focus his efforts on establishing a seminary for memorization of Qur’an and teaching of the ‘alimiyya program
The vision being set in motion was to train a generation of Muslims scholars that would educate and guide the growing Muslim community
The lack of support from the Muslim community
the lack of integration into the wider British community
and the lack of funds made it seem an impossible endeavour
Mawlana Yusuf never wavered in his commitment and diligently worked to make the dream of his teacher a reality
In 1973 he purchased the derelict Aitken Sanatorium in the village of Holcombe
What had once been a hospice for people suffering from tuberculosis
would become one of the first fully-fledged higher-education Islamic institutes outside of the Indian-Subcontinent teaching the adapted-Nizami syllabus
The years of struggle by Maulana Yusuf to fulfil this vision paid off handsomely
such as the Jamiatul Imam Muhammad Zakariya seminary in Bradford for girls
have produced well over 2,000 British born (and other international students) male and female ‘alimiyya graduates – many of whom are working as scholars and serving communities across the UK
a countless number of individuals have memorized the Qur’an at these institutes
many of the graduates of the Darul Uloom and its sister institutes have set up their own institutes
such as Jamiatul Ilm Wal Huda in Blackburn
Mawlana Yusuf saw first-hand the fruit of his labours – witnessing his grand students (graduates from his students’ institutes) providing religious instruction and services to communities around the world in their local languages
What started as a relationship of love between a student and teacher
manifested into the transmission of knowledge across continents
one would be hard-pressed to find a Muslim who had not directly or indirectly benefited from him
Mawlana Yusuf was a man with deep insights into the needs of Western contemporary society
one that was very different from the one he had grown up and trained in
With a view to contributing to mainstream society
Mawlana Yusuf encouraged his graduates to enter into further education both in post-graduate Islamic courses and western academia
and to diversify their fields of learning through courses at mainstream UK universities
many ‘alimiyya graduates of his institutes are trained in law
His students also include several who have completed PhDs and lecture at universities
His vision was to train British-born (or other) Muslim scholars who would be well versed in contemporary thought and discipline along with their advanced Islamic learning
equipping them to better contribute to society
Despite his commitment to the establishment of a public good
the shaykh was an immensely private person and avoided seeking accolade or attention
For many decades he refused invitations to attend conferences or talks around the country
choosing to focus on his students and his family
teaching the academic syllabus and infusing the hearts of many aspirants with the love of Allah through regular gatherings of remembrance (dhikr) and spiritual retreats (i’tikaf) in the way of his shaykh’s Chishti Sufi order
During my entire stay with him at Darul Uloom (1985–1997)
I can say with honesty that I did not come across a single student who spoke ill of him
He commanded such awe and respect that people would find it difficult to speak with him casually
for those who had the opportunity to converse with him
He was full of affection for his students and colleagues and had immense concern for the Muslim Ummah
He possessed unparalleled forbearance and self-composure
barely moving and without shifting his posture
he sat gracefully teaching us Sahih al-Bukhari
he never made an unpleasant expression or winced from the pain
Anyone who has listened to his talks or read his books can bear testimony to two things: his immense love for the Messenger of Allah and his love for Shaykh Mawlana Muhammad Zakariya Kandhlawi (may Allah have mercy on him)
It is probably hard to find a talk in which he did not speak of the two
His shaykh was no doubt his link to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) in both his hadith and spiritual transmissions
he had retired from most of his teaching commitments (except Sahih al-Bukhari) and had reduced meeting with people other than his weekly dhikr gatherings
His time was spent with his family and young children and writing books
His written legacy comprises over 20 titles

a light complexion and a scar on his head—this is what the 50-year-old man looked like nearly 8,000 years ago when his head was placed on a wooden stake during an ancient ritual
The man’s remains were found in what was once a prehistoric lake in Sweden
and now—thanks to renowned forensic artist and sculptor Oscar Nilsson—we have a rough idea of what he looked like in life
In 2012, the remains of at least 11 Stone Age adults and an infant were found in Motala
Only one of the adult human skulls had a jaw
while the jaw bones of wild animals—including bears
boar and deer—were found alongside the humans in the gravesite
two of the skulls had been placed on stakes in the water
which archeologists now believe to be part of an ancient ritual or tribute to prominent people
the jawless man Nilsson reconstructed was likely a village leader with high status
Nilsson first had to recreate the man’s jaw based on measurements of his skull
researchers were able to obtain DNA data from six skulls
enabling Nilsson to exploit that data for age
experience and general forensic reconstruction techniques informed Nilsson as he pieced together the more artistic attributes of the man
and the wild boar clothing he is depicted in
Evidence of a head wound on the skulls in the gravesite is obvious
found on this man and a few others showed signs of healing
Nilsson even added scar tissue to the wound to provide a more accurate visual of how the healing wound looked at the time of his death
“It is an exciting time from history that we can bring to life
It's great that we get to show what our closest neighbors from another time looked like,” said Hannah Gruffman
Culture and Leisure Manager at Charlottenborg Castle
the museum in Motala that houses the reconstructed Stone Age man
Nilsson is working with a female skull found at the same gravesite
While the man’s DNA told Nilsson he had light attributes
the female’s DNA indicates she was blonde but
Nilsson aims to finish the reconstruction of the woman next summer
at which time she will also go on display at Charlottenborg Castle

Colorado College alum Shaian Gutiérrez ’22 is making up for lost time and thriving overseas
The COVID-19 pandemic curtailed her plans to study abroad during her school years
but thanks to receiving the Keller Family Venture Grant before graduation last spring
Gutiérrez was able to apply her art and Spanish majors toward investigating topics related to architecture and identity in Mérida
That experience whetted her appetite for working abroad
“After getting a taste of what life was like in another country
I was interested in finding work outside of the U.S.,” she says
she landed a position teaching art at an international school in Hong Kong
“I’ve been in Hong Kong for only six months now
but time passes really slowly when you’re in a new place—in a good way!” says Gutiérrez
“I've learned a lot about people in my new position,” she added
“We can be from different countries and be the same or be from the same place and be completely different
I guess that's an experience that's specific to international schools
but it was something I had to adjust to.”
Gutiérrez enjoys finding new places to explore and draw
She found more than she could have hoped for on a recent outing to Chiang Mai
Filled with centuries-old temples and exquisite architecture from the Lanna Kingdom
which occupied the land for hundreds of years
Chiang Mai is an art lover’s paradise
The elephant is the national symbol of Thailand and is incorporated into everything from chedi (Buddhist temples) to street art to restaurants
were the living elephants with prosthetic limbs receiving care at Friends of the Asian Elephant Hospital (FAE)
“This is where I met Soraida Salwala
which opened in 1993,” Gutiérrez explains
“Soraida introduced me to the patients at her hospital
who was the first elephant in the world to wear a prosthetic leg
followed closely by her neighbor and the second elephant in the world to wear a prosthetic leg
Gutiérrez’s mother is a Denver-based author who worked with Soraida Salwala to write a section of her book
Bionic Beasts: Saving Animal Lives with Artificial Flippers
who is a permanent resident at the FAE Hospital
Salwala invited Gutiérrez to visit her and her elephants in Lampang
“I brought my sketchbook and pens with me in case I got a chance to quickly draw an elephant or two
and Soraida was kind enough to let me spend the afternoon drawing Boonmee and Motala.”
she wandered away from her mother who was employed as a logging elephant across the Myanmar border
She stepped on a land mine and lost a large portion of her right foot and was subsequently admitted to the FAE Hospital
she’s 19 years old and Gutiérrez considers her very extroverted and sweet
She loved to see what I was doing and lifted her trunk each time in what I could only describe as a smile
She was so charming and I truly enjoyed my time spent with her.”
Motala was employed as a logging elephant across the Myanmar border when she stepped on a land mine as well
Her injuries were severe and life-threatening when the hospital took her into their care
spots begin to show around their face and ears
I had fun drawing all of Motala’s spots
and she turned to me to eat her bananas and then watched me as I drew her
She was very patient and sweet as well and I was happy she let me draw her.”
Gutiérrez couldn’t help but notice the parallels in their personalities and those of people. “Motala is very kind and patient
and Mosha is a teenager and can be a bit grumpy
so I heard her trumpeting from time to time.”
“They also had an elephant with PTSD whom I couldn't visit for his own comfort and my safety
and there was a mother and a baby elephant who were both very mischievous
especially the baby who had learned how to open his stall gate.”
Once she got to know the elephants and what had happened to them
Gutiérrez understood the importance of continuing to fund the hospital
“They're intelligent and kind animals and deserve to live and have access to a hospital run by someone as caring as Soraida.”
Only a small portion of the funding for the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation comes from outside of Thailand
“It was important to me that I spread the word to a community like CC because I quickly realized during my visit that when these elephants are injured and admitted to Soraida’s hospital
they can’t pay for themselves nor can their keepers
The FAE provides a home for the elephants and their keepers during recovery
and their mission is important to me and so many others
so I appreciate having a space like this to share.”

Azraa Motala is a force to be reckoned with
she is a Muslim female multidisciplinary artist
who has wowwed the community with her most recent piece for her Masters at the Chelsea college of Arts
Amaliah sat down with azra to learn a little more
I’m a 22-year-old Multidisciplinary Artist from Lancashire
I create a range of work spanning photography
I studied Fine Art at the University of Central Lancashire and have just completed my Masters at the Chelsea College of Arts
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt4eM6-gwzKNrbO5RVzhAkJiOAP8Bb0D6PPhcA0/
I’ve always been interested in art; ever since I was a child I’d spend countless hours drawing
I was fortunate enough to always have an array of art materials on hand but often had no idea how to use them; I spent a lot of time experimenting and creating to the point where I now have around 20 sketchbooks and numerous folders full of work
when I was younger I hardly used a conventional colouring book; instead
cars and cartoon characters for me to colour in
When I was 13 I spent the entire two weeks of my Easter holidays hunched over a little desk in my room drawing cars with my dad
I used to spend my science lessons in secondary school secretly drawing under my exercise book
I’d stay behind during my lunch hours to finish work
I’d find every opportunity I could to create something; I loved the process
the solitude and the sense of peace that would wash over me when I was making art – something I still savour now
I beg you to define me, Constrain me in your warped ideology, Feel entitled to my identity, Project your prejudice on to me. I am more than you perceive, I will not submit to your ideals, I do not need your liberation, I am reconstructions anguish. Azraa Motala, 2018, Oil on linen, 186 x 213 cm

it wasn’t something I could realistically see myself doing long-term
I carried on studying a broad selection of subjects through the sixth form
only when the time came to make my university applications did I consider pursuing it
Thankfully I didn’t face any real obstacles
and my parents were both fully supportive of my decision to study Fine Art – they encouraged me to do what I enjoyed and was passionate about
Finished it.(Finally) 😊

My work is very much centered around notions of identity and belonging and seeks to untangle culturally inherited expectations
and the overlapping aspects of my identity as a young British-Asian Muslim woman within the contemporary Western space
I am inherently interested in the way in which women from the diaspora have been represented in both the past and the present day and how our identities are constructed from the spaces in between
Parts of the diasporic image not only centers around remembered or imagined pasts and places but also projected futures
through clothing I am not only negotiating the tensions of a double heritage but bringing forward a new material heritage of hybridity
Exhibition spam coming up ☺

It’s undeniably apparent that women of colour are underrepresented in all forms – our voices silenced and our image warped
Muslim women are unequivocally one of the most spoken for groups in society
often denied an actual platform for self-representation but are instead ventriloquized by society
Utilising both photography and painting to self-represent I wanted to empower and uplift women of colour through work which touches upon the mutual struggles of many second and third generation immigrants
BAME communities have been particularly affected in our current socio-political climate
‘Othering’ a universal part of the second and third generation immigrant struggle which no doubt influences the creative output of many artists – including myself
I paint without my glasses on so it looks better than it actually is. (I legit step back and I'm like ooo it's all nicely blended and my aunt just looks at me like…erm are you sure???) #arttips

I’m very interested in representing the underrepresented and making art which people can connect with and hopefully see themselves in
I remember going to galleries when I was younger and never saw the empowered image of the Eastern woman
Even growing up representation in the media has always been lacking or a homogenous often stereotypical depiction of the south-Asian or Muslim woman
I’d like to continue making work that represents a minority and shows the ever-changing face of what it means to be British
The exhibition is on till the 13th! 10am – 8pm at the Chelsea College of Arts. 🌻

I think culture can sometimes be disregarded because its seen as being somewhat unprogressive
We’re fed continuously western ideals of beauty and subconsciously taught that giving up the inherently cultural or “foreign” strands of our identity would equal emancipation
I am exploring my intrinsic longing for a place unknown to myself but still a critical part of my identity
an exploration of somewhere in-between here and there

I think the worst thing you can do is doubt yourself
it’s a well-known fact that artists often get consumed by self-doubt but you really have to stop comparing yourself to others
some might be able to come up with brilliant concepts and others might find their talent lies in digital illustration or movies or painting
You just have to experiment and continue working on your craft -if it brings you any kind of peace don’t let it go
Prominent Limpopo arts personality Mphoza Mashabela is embroiled in a legal battle with multi-award-winning traditional gospel star Shibu Molomo over alleged defamation and is also engaged in a tiff over money with Mapungubwe Festival organiser Shane Motala
Molomo is in the soup after Mashabela’s lawyers slapped her with a R500 000 letter of demand for alleged defamation
Mashabela is demanding payment from Motala for services he allegedly rendered during the Mapungubwe Festival last month
Thobejane stated in the letter that Molomo from Mookgophong in Limpopo
made defamatory remarks and tarnished Mashabela’s image on Facebook on December 10 last year
demanded Molomo make a public apology on her Facebook page within 10 days after the letter of demand was issued
Failure to do so would result in a lawsuit of R500 000
Molomo posted: “Please tell that man who always claims to fight for artist tsa Limpopo gore I didn’t forget what he put me through ko Mapungubwe music festival
Make him aware gore no man is allowed to make me suffer
He embarrassed me in front of thousands of people then I’m going to address him here.”
Thobejane said Molomo deleted her post after the letter of demand was served on her
Thobejane told Sunday World: “The lady by the name of Shibu Molomo went on the Facebook platform and said the Limpopo Arts Movement chairperson Mphoza Mashabela had failed to exercise his duties where she accused my client of failing to protect the interests of the artists in the province
“Shibu actually accused my client of creating problems [rather] than solutions within the art space in the province
as she said that my client was only focusing on other artists and ignoring others.”
Sunday World also understands that Mashabela is gatvol with Shane Motala
the Mapungubwe Music Festival event organiser
At the heart of their fight is R20 000 allegedly owed to Mashabela by Motala
Mashabela was allegedly requested to organise Zonke Dikana as the main act
Sunday World has seen messages between Mashabela and Zonke’s manager
enquiring about Zonke’s availability and booking fees
which Peter rejected and asked for R350 000
Looking forward to working with you when your budget allows,” Peter wrote to Mashabela in one of the messages
everything was sorted and Mashabela closed the deal
Motala is playing hide and seek with Mashabela
“Motala needed Zonke as the main act but he didn’t know how to get hold of her
He didn’t have the contact details and didn’t even know where to start
So he approached me and asked for assistance
I didn’t hesitate to help because I treated him like a brother,” said Mashabela
Mashabela claimed that even on the day of the event
he had to make sure that Zonke and her team were well taken care of
“When Zonke and her team left the venue it was not easy because the main gate was blocked
I had to make sure that all those cars were removed
I actually assisted Zonke and her team out of the stadium
“When she arrived I had to organise the tags for her
Motala was so unprofessional and I found myself doing more than what he asked for,” said Mashabela
“I was no longer a middle man but I literally became his right-hand man,” he said
He said he tried to talk to Motala but he keeps telling him stories and lately he is avoiding his calls
I brought Zonke and now he must fulfil his part,” fumed Mashabela
Peter confirmed Mashabela’s role in the deal
“I can confirm that Mashabela was the middleman in this deal,” she said
Motala said there was no agreement between himself and Mashabela
“I merely asked for Zonke’s contacts and that didn’t constitute a contract
At no stage did I mention that I’d give him R20 000 for providing contact details
My contract was with Zonke and not with Mashabela,” said Motala
Molomo said: “I don’t want to comment on that matter at all.”

The partial skull used to reconstruct the face of this man was discovered with other human crania and animal jawbones that had been deposited in a Swedish lake around 6,000 B.C
The artist who reconstructed this man chose to give him a cape made from wild boar—one of the animal species also found in the lake
with a wiry gray beard disappearing into his wild boar cloak
as if he’s spotting something in the distance
Dubbed “Ludvig,“ he lived in northern Europe some 8,000 years ago
because researchers have many questions for him
noting that wood preserved inside two of the skulls indicated that at least some of the skulls had been mounted on stakes
It was like nothing the scientists had seen before
“It’s a very fascinating site to work with, and quite complex,” says Fredrik Hallgren, director of the Kanaljorden project for Sweden’s The Cultural Heritage Foundation
The facial reconstruction was commissioned by the Charlottenborgs slott
The museum is housed in a 17th-century manor house built by count Ludvig Wierich Lewenhaupt—ancient Ludvig’s reverse namesake
said the reconstruction would give townspeople the opportunity to see what one of its earliest residents looked like
is a particularly fascinating site for archaeologists who study the Scandinavian Mesolithic
a period after the last glaciers retreated from the region and during which hunter gather groups from both western mainland Europe and northeast Europe began to move in around 11,000 years ago
The remains at Kanaljorden are unlike most other Scandinavian Mesolithic burials, which tend to be burials in the ground. Here, around 6,000 B.C., the crania of nine men and women were deliberately placed in the lake—perhaps all mounted on stakes—and interspersed with the jawbones (but not crania) of several local animal species
“It's almost like the humans and animals complement each other in a symbolic way,” says Hallgren
The unusual nature of Kanaljorden struck archaeologist and sculptor Oscar Nilsson
who studied photographs from the site to try to understand what may have motivated people back then to arrange carefully and submerge the bones
you just look into their world of imagination
Graffman is eager to see how Ludvig is received by the 21st-century residents of Motala, and views the reconstruction as a way to build bridges between people across space and time.
“That's what we try to do in all kinds of different areas, whether it's like this [reconstruction] or when we read books about other people or we see art that connect us,” she says. “I think it’s important to find the connections between people.”

His remains show that he suffered several periods of malnutrition while growing up
which may have slightly stunted his growth

a vigilant Marshall Security Greater Westmead Association (GWA) Tactical Officer
noticed a suspicious male carrying a laptop on Motala Road
Upon stopping and questioning the individual
it was confirmed that the laptop matched the description of one stolen during a housebreaking incident in Motala Heights on January 13
The suspect admitted to attempting to sell the stolen laptop in a nearby informal settlement
and Pinetown SAPS were called to the scene
Pinetown SAPS arrived shortly thereafter and transported the suspect to the police station for further processing and investigation

Gospel artist Peter Mabula has issued summons against event organiser Shane Motala
This after his name was used to promote Mapungubwe Music Festival
told Sunday World that summons were issued last week
he said: “The summons were issued last week and we’re now waiting for a return of service from the sheriff
“I can also confirm that we are suing [for] the full amount of the contract
Mabula accused Motala of exploiting his brand to attract ticket sales
At that time he told Sunday World that he was initially not booked but he saw his name on the poster
the chairperson of Limpopo Arts Movement (LAM)
Motala apologised and subsequently booked Mabula
Everything was fine until they decided to dump Mabula
They said he’s too expensive and they could not afford him
“At that time he was already rehearsing for this festival
We tried to reason with them but they wouldn’t listen,” Mashabela had told Sunday World
The matter was then escalated to Thobejane
Mashabela said: “Motala will have his day in court
we are protecting the rights of Limpopo artists
We warned him but clearly he took us for granted
“We are calling upon the Department of Sports
Arts and Culture not to work with service providers that are destroying Limpopo artists’ careers
He must pay back our member and acknowledge his mistake.”
Motala said he has not received the summons as yet
“We haven’t received any summons from him or communication from the artist
When they perform they don’t call the newspaper and say thank you Shane
But I guess it’s the price we pay for occupying these seats

New study could reduce risk of social isolation for older people with hearing loss and lead to more targeted interventions
The stages of descent into social isolation experienced by older people with hearing loss have been set out for the first time in a new study led by a researcher at the University of Stirling
Analysis by Dr Aysha Motala, a lecturer in psychology in the Faculty of Natural Sciences
could lead to more targeted interventions aimed at mitigating the impact on health and social lives
More than 65% of adults aged 60 years or over experience some form of hearing loss such as difficulties understanding speech when background sound is present
according to the World Health Organisation's World Report on Hearing published in 2021
Understanding the relationship between hearing loss and social isolation is vital because it is associated with cognitive decline and other health-related issues such as poor nutrition
Dr Motala said: “Age-related hearing loss is a widespread concern among older adults
affecting their daily lives and social interactions. “While the association between hearing loss and social isolation is acknowledged
the precise mechanisms and stages involved are not well-defined
“This work bridges that gap by proposing a comprehensive framework that delineates the progression from hearing difficulties to social withdrawal and eventual isolation
filling a significant knowledge gap in the field.”
During the first stage – disengagement – older people with hearing loss have a tendency to zone out
The next stage – social withdrawal – sees them leave gatherings early and even avoid certain situations
In the final stage – social isolation – older people with hearing loss will limit connections leading to a lack of companionship and support
Dr Motala and co-researchers Dr Bjorn Herrmann (University of Toronto) and Professor Ingrid Johnsrude (University of Western Ontario) suggest a combination of interventions that may slow or halt the descent towards social isolation
the researchers propose holistic interventions that tackle multiple issues
and exercise to foster greater social engagement and participation
Dr Motala said: “Identifying these distinct stages offers valuable insights for developing targeted interventions
It may be useful for family doctors and audiologists who want to mitigate the risk of social isolation for their patients with hearing loss.”
The paper A Longitudinal Framework to Describe the Relation Between Age-Related Hearing Loss and Social Isolation was published in the journal Trends in Hearing
This research was undertaken thanks to a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) postdoctoral fellowship (AM)
and funding from CIHR and NSERC (ISJ).

it occurred in the Prophet’s mosque
it was the Prophet that was being interrupted
the Prophet did not say that the interruption disrespected him or his mosque
the Prophet recognized the validity of someone concerned about injustice and raising the concern publicly
On assuming office after he was selected leader of the state after the Prophet’s death
Co-operate with me when I do right; correct me when I err.” He also said
“Turn away from me when I deviate.” Abu Bakr admonished the community that if he errs and departs from ethical principles
the community has an obligation to speak truth to power
Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Sultan recently asked the Saudi population to accept austerity measures whilst personally spending about half a billion United States dollars on a supposed Salvador Mundi painting of Christ
Islamic tenets demand that the public must hold leaders accountable for their actions
“[T]o tell the truth to a person commissioned to rule is faithful allegiance; to conceal it is treason.”
Abu Bakr recognized the equality of society
which is replete in the sayings of the Prophet
The legitimacy of Abu Bakr’s leadership was not derived from dynastic rule
The subsequent three Caliphs were also selected through a process of mutual consultation
which arguably represented the first implementation of a rudimentary democracy; rule by consensus as opposed to coercion
It was also a rejection of hereditary leadership
asked for a consultative committee of the leading personalities of the time to choose his successor
Omar was absolutely emphatic that his successor could not be his son
Neither the Prophet (considered by Muslims as the greatest personality that lived)
nor the Caliphs gave the state their family name
The Saudi state is named after the ruling family and constitutes an absolutist
the members of whom have amassed enormous wealth
The Royal family treat the resources and treasury as their private piggy bank
Caliph Abu Bakr warned his officials against making state appointments based on nepotism or leaders enriching themselves
Abu Bakr asked his daughter to take stock of his assets so that a determination can be made at the end whether he had been enriched in office
This might be the earliest recorded instance of a leader concerned about corruption and providing a self-imposed check against corruption
instructed the Muslim community that no leader should be obeyed if he acts against the tenets of the faith
Omar remarked that the community has rights over him and must be able to enforce those rights
Omar took meticulous measures to ensure that political power was not an entrée to richness
Omar asked every officer he appointed to take a pledge that they would live simply and eat simply
Those that breached the rule were reported by the citizenry and were sanctioned
A detailed inventory of the assets of the officials was prepared at the time of their appointment and reassessed at the end of their tenure
The officials had to account for any increases in their assets
The Saudi monarchy and the sycophant clerics on the government payroll distort material aspects of Islam to justify and fortify the survival of the Al Saud dynasty
This is an inversion of Islamic teachings and contradict historical examples concerning issues of justice
and corruption being addressed in the Prophet’s mosque or during the pilgrimage
The Caliph Omar was confronted in public in the Prophet’s mosque and in the streets by ordinary people who raised concerns about inappropriate behavior by government officials
Omar protected the right of a person that once interrupted his speech
and is reported to have said “if the people do not give me good advice they are useless and if I do not listen to it
Omar asked the assembly what would they do if he
A man stood up and responded he would confront Omar and even suggested he would take up arms against him
“praise be to God that among my people are present men who could put me on the straight part if I deviated from it.”
The Saudis demand the pilgrimage and visits to the holy mosques be conducted as an exclusive exercise of rituals and individual spirituality – a reflection and strengthening of the individual’s relationship with God in a morally blind manner
The Prophet and the Caliphs conducted political and military meetings in the Prophet’s mosque
The Caliphs Omar and Uthman required their senior government officials come to Mecca at the time of the annual pilgrimage and people were encouraged to voice any complaints they might have had against any official
Omar is known to have taken action against aberrant government officials during these occasions
The Saudi rulers distort the comprehensive Islamic injunction of enjoining good and forbidding evil
and turn it on its head to preclude any questioning of their rule
they offer an obtuse and destructive assault on absolute principles of justice
The protest in Medina in the last week of Ramadan did not happen next to the Prophet’s grave
Not since the time of the noble Caliphs have we seen this sort of peaceful rebuke of public officials
The protest offers Muslims an opportunity for self-reflection beyond the positivist diet fed by absolute dictators that they are owed unquestionable obedience by virtue of their hold on power
The Caliphs Abu Bakr and Omar rebuked an inert or indifferent citizenry
and ordered them to hold their leaders publicly accountable
The Prophet and the noble Caliphs would not countenance illegitimate or dynastic rule
or Saudi support for repression in Egypt and Palestine
The obligation to enjoin good and forbid evil requires every Muslim to talk out against these abuses
The concept of Deen -that Islam is an all-encompassing way of life- requires the rejection of Saudi and other brands of Islam that pigeonhole Islam as sanitized rituals

his interpretations are just as weird as can be of any one with his background

Participation of black ownership in the value chain of fruit exports has always been a topic of debate
logistics and marketing have been somewhat thin on the ground in transformation which is generally desired across the South African industry
a fully black-owned packhouse is gaining track in the Vyeboom region and has started packing and shipping its first apples to the Far East
It is a ground-breaking new development which leads the way in transformation in the fruit packing sector
Minister of Economic Opportunitiesin the Western Cape Government
called it a very proud day for the fruit industry
Congratulation and may you be blessed with many years of prosperous growth in returns and jobs,' he exclaimed
D&M Fresh Products is a family business owned by Derich Priga and his family and is located near the Theewaterskloofsdam
In what has now become a mutually beneficial relationship with D&M Fresh Products
and specifically its subsidiary Stargrow Development and the marketing arm Stargrow Fruit Marketing
are supporting the company to expand its role in the South African industry
“This is part of our clearly declared policy of supporting transformation in the South African fruit industry,” says Michiel Prins
“South Africa is now living through exciting political change and our president has asked companies to get involved to help and promote true transformation,' he continues
'We found in Derick Priga a person with passion and commitment
and great skill in fruit packing and we are confident that he will enjoy great success.”
“We entered into our partnership with Stargrow Fruit Marketing last year,' says Priga
'This will enable D&M to gain more experience in that field
We very recently started packing for the export markets for the first time.”
who is already in partnership with Stargrow at his farm Waveren near Wolseley
says Priga’s entry into the value chain of fruit exports is of great significance
“It is a ground-breaking event because this is one area where we have seen little progress.”
Motala is a well-known figure in agriculture and in the fresh produce business
chairperson of the Deciduous Fruit Development Chamber (DFDC) and the Deciduous Fruit Industry Development Trust (DFIDT)
as well as chairperson of the Western Cape region of the African Farmer Association of South Africa (AFASA)
Fruit from Motala’s farm will soon be packed at the D&M Fresh Products packhouse
but according to Priga growers from the Villiersdorp region are already also supporting his venture
“With our relationship with Stargrow Fruit Marketing we now not only offer packing options for growers
but also become a gateway to a fast growing marketing channel.”
Prins says Stargrow Development is in the process of planning similar projects with other black farmers in the Western Cape
“On a macro level we are also engaging with communities in areas of high potential for fruit growing in other parts of the country
but these projects represents another challenge altogether.”
Meanwhile Motala is also making great progress at Waveren
where the latest pear varieties have been planted in the redevelopment of the farm in association with Stargrow
While fruit from older orchards will be packed at D&M Fresh Products this year
the new orchards will start nearing fruit next year
