The Nordic energy company Gasum started operations at its new bunkering station for liquefied gas at Port of Nynäshamn
The new station includes new bunkering solutions enabling ships to bunker the chilled fuel
the new bunkering station is ready to serve existing and new customers
It enables bunkering at high speed from two trucks at the same time
The station set-up and the specialized trucks now being used allows bunkering to take place at the same time as unloading or loading operations
Ferries were earlier bunkered using single trucks which was both time consuming and affected the ferries’ main operations and schedule
The new bunkering station is frequently used by two of Destination Gotland’s gas ferries
“The station’s fit-for-purpose high-speed pumps allow the bunkering operation to take just 45 minutes
Passengers disembark and embark and goods are unloaded and loaded while bunkering
High precision and prompt deliveries from our side are needed in order to keep to the vessels’ ordinary schedule,” noted Jonas Åkermark
The station is located at Port of Stockholm premises
very close to the existing Gasum LNG terminal
Gasum’s LNG trucks transport the fuel a short distance of 5 kilometers from the terminal to the station
Gasum supplies both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG) or a blend of the two from the station
Ships blending LBG into their fuel will reduce their CO2 emissions as biogas causes zero environmental emissions

Ferry company Stena Line has announced an expansion and strengthening of their operations across the Baltic Sea region
Next year the current vessels on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route will be replaced with two modern ferries: Stena Lagan and Stena Mersey
The new ferries will offer an attractive way for passengers to travel on the Baltic Sea
they will add further 30 per cent freight capacity on the route
Stena Line is one of the world’s leading ferry companies with 18 ferry routes in Europe
Three of them are operating across the Baltic Sea
Since Stena Line acquired the ferry route between Nynäshamn in Sweden and Ventspils in Latvia in 2012
it has more than doubled its operations from one vessel and 10 departures per week
which has two vessels and 24 departures per week for passengers and freight
“We have seen an increase in demand from our customers across the wider Baltic Sea region
We are now strengthening our position and customer offer further with new modern vessels and more capacity” says Niclas Mårtensson
The two modern RoPax-vessels Stena Lagan and Stena Mersey were built at the Italian shipyard Visentini in 2005 and have been operating on Stena Line’s Irish Sea route between Belfast and Liverpool for the last 10 years
To create a more standardised and modern flexible fleet the two vessels will be upgraded
modified and lengthened before returning to Stena Line to operate on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route from 2021
The ground-breaking conversion is conducted by Stena RoRo and Sedef Shipyard in Turkey
The two vessels will be lengthened with a 36 metres mid-section and after the conversion they will be 222 m long and have a capacity of 200 cabins
970 passengers and 2,875 freight lane meters plus the additional car deck; adding another 30 per cent freight capacity on the route
To increase the loading efficiency they will also be modified with drive through capabilities on two levels
The vessels will also be fitted with hybrid scrubbers
Stena Lagan is currently at the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla
where it is planned to start operating on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route in the beginning of 2021
Stena Mersey is still operating on the Belfast-Liverpool route and will be replaced by the third E-Flexer Stena Embla in January 2021 before leaving for her lengthening at the Sedef Shipyard
She is expected to return to service on her new route later during the year
”We continue to build on our successful RoPax concept
These two new vessels will be a fantastic addition to the fleet and for our customers
I am looking forward to welcoming them onboard
Trade Director Baltic Sea North at Stena Line since 1 October
The crossing time of 8.5 hours is the fastest sea-connection between Sweden and the Baltic countries
The route is a popular choice for both transport and tourism and is a vital supply line to both the manufacturing and construction industry in Sweden
Built: 2005 at the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini
Modified/Lenghtened: by Stena RoRo during 2020/2021 at the Sedef Shipbuilding in Tuzla
Stena Line´s Baltic Sea operation on the routes Ventspils (Latvia) - Nynäshamn (Sweden) and Liepaja (Latvia) - Travemünde (Germany) is managed by Stena Rederi A/S
a consolidation of Stena AB’s Danish ferry and shipping activities in Hellerup
Stena Line is one of Europe's leading ferry companies with 36 vessels and 18 routes in Northern Europe
which has about 16 000 employees and an annual turnover of around 37 billion SEK
Stena Gothica and Urd can accommodate 186 passengers each
Sweden’s Stena Line has launched the first ferry on its new Nynäshamn-Hanko route towards Finland
departed from the Nynäshamn/Stockholm Norvik Port in Sweden
there will be three departures a week on the Nynäshamn-Hanko route
which will have a crossing duration of 12 hours
following the addition of the Stena Gothica ferry
Both ferries have a capacity of 1,600 lane metres and can accommodate 186 passengers
Nynäshamn-Hanko is said to be Stena Line’s first route from Sweden to Finland
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Stena Line Baltic Sea North trade director Johan Edelman said: “By Urd’s departure to Finland
This new service is primarily an outcome of customer dialogue and market demand
you also need to be somewhat entrepreneurial
a dedicated team and strong commitment to make a new route a success
So far the response has been very positive which shows that we made the right decision.”
The new course is expected to fortify Stena Line’s position in the Baltic Sea
the firm will be able to meet increasing demands from freight clients for better transportation in the Baltic Sea and beyond
Ports of Stockholm board chair Fredrik Lindstål added: “The commitment of Stena Line in introducing another route from Stockholm Norvik Port emphasises how important the newly built port is for the sustainable supply of goods to Sweden’s largest consumer area
The port has strong intermodal connections to the rest of Sweden both by road and by rail and the location is closer to the fairway than any other ports on the Swedish east coast
It is a success that we together can grow with yet another new route
Last month, Stena Line and Associated British Ports reached a $136.30m (£100m) agreement for the joint development of a new freight terminal at the Port of Immingham in the Humber area of the UK

Nothing's prettier than a good Swedish summer but before heading to the beach
Ain’t nothing prettier than a good Swedish summer
But before you pack your picnic basket and gather towels and suntan lotions
check if the beach to which you’re heading is actually approved of by the European Union
Many Swedish beaches unfortunately end up at the bottom of EU’s list of approved beaches because of poor water quality
”We have a great number of beaches which the EU states are impossible to classify,” says microbiologist Anneli Carlander at Folkhälsomyndigheten (the Public Health Agency of Sweden)
In total 446 Swedish beaches have been investigated for intestinal bacteria
managed to pass EU’s minimal criteria and received the assessment ”good enough” regarding quality of water
The average of other countries whose beaches were investigated was 94.5 percent
But 20 percent of Sweden’s beaches couldn’t get classified at all
”Those beaches have at some point during the past years missed being tested,” Carlander explains
so the result is a bit misleading.” One explanation for why Swedish beaches don’t fare better on EU’s list may be that the beach season in Sweden is not as long as in the countries around the Mediterranean
it’s not noticed as much as it is for us,” Carlander says
The following beaches were deemed as having poor water quality: Nickstabadet in Nynäshamn

Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica will be able to accommodate 1,200 passengers
an increase of 33% compared to current ferries
the vessels will feature 3600m of freight lane
Stena Line Group CEO Niclas Mårtensson said: “We continue growing together with our customers by strengthen our position and fleet across the Baltic Sea
Demand for capacity in the region keeps increasing as freight customers continue to expand and travel passengers choose ferry travel as their preferred safe form of transport in the wake of the pandemic
and fuel-efficient next-generation ferries are the flagships in the modernisation of our fleet as well as our development of sustainable shipping.”
the E-Flexer ferries are up to 30% more energy efficient in comparison with existing ships
The new vessels are also designed to enable conversion to methanol or liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel
Stena Line said: “The new ferries will be equipped to use shore power during port calls to reduce emissions and the electricity connection also enables a conversion to battery hybrid in the future
The vessel will offer efficient loading and unloading with drive-through lanes on the two levels.”
During 2019 and 2020, the company launched three 214m E-Flexer ferries, namely Stena Estrid, Stena Edda and Stena Embla
Stena Line has broadened its operations in the Baltic Sea in terms of both freight and passenger capacity
The company launched new large and modern ferries on both of its two Latvian courses
Nynäshamn-Ventspils and Travemünde-Liepaja

but it is important we are as prepared as possible for any scenario”
The evacuation happened in a calm and collected manner
together with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) and in total 32 passengers were evacuated using helicopter
26 passengers were taken to Destination Gotland’s vessel M/S Visby
which was on standby close to Stena Scandica
Additional six passenger were taken straight to the city of Visby due to the weather conditions
“The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew have been our focus throughout the event
We do understand it has been extremely stressful experience for our passengers
and I am proud of how our employees handled the situation
I am relieved no one was injured and pleased with how well our safety teams reacted onboard and how the evacuation process were handled according to our management systems”
crew on all vessels hold weekly safety drills
there are also larger drills several times a year
such as mass evacuation of the vessels in cooperation with shore-side authorities
Shortly before 21.00 CEST Stena Scandica regained power
thanks to the crew on board and were able to set course for Nynäshamn where she made port at 11:10 CEST
and authorities are on the scene to start their routine investigation
Stena Scandica was built 2005 and rebuilt 2021

and now we have two ships doing 24 trips a week,» said Johan Edelman
commercial director in the northern region of the Baltic Sea
He says this expansion is largely thanks to customers’ growing demand for sea trips in the Baltic Sea and additional freight capacity
«Now we can enhance our positions on the market and offer our clients two new
modern and large ferries that will provide 30% bigger freight capacity and a pleasant experience on all of our routes to and from Latvia.»
Chief Executive Officer of Ventspils Freeport Andris Purmalis says: «It is a great pleasure for Ventspils Freeport to welcome the new Stena Scandica ferry
this is spacious and modern ferry will help expand the opportunities between Latvia and Scandinavia
which is a welcome piece of news for Latvian and neighbouring countries’ industrial sector
This modern passenger service will help Ventspils Freeport develop its role not only in the freight and industrial sector but the tourism sectors as well.»
Ventspils-Nynäshamn is the shortest route connecting Baltic States and Scandinavia

which will be later diverted to Liepaja-Travemünde route
Ferry company Stena Line has today announced an expansion and strengthening of their operations across the Baltic Sea region
Next year the current vessels on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route will be replaced with two modern and lengthened RoPax ferries Stena Lagan and Stena Mersey
which will add further 30 per cent freight capacity
The new ferries will also offer an attractive alternative way to travel on the Baltic Sea
Stena line is one of the world’s leading ferry companies with 18 ferry routes in Europe
Since Stena Line acquired the ferry route between Nynäshamn in Sweden and Ventspils in Latvia in 2012 it has more than doubled its operations from one vessel and 10 departures per week
which has two vessels and 24 departures per week
Stena Line has now announced an expansion and strengthening of their position and offer to both freight and travel customers in the Baltic Sea with the deployment of the two modern and lengthened RoPax-vessels Stena Lagan and Stena Mersey on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route during 2021
This will increase freight capacity by almost a third
making Stena Line an attractive choice of the travel market on the Baltic Sea.
The interior will be updated to Stena Line’s familiar Scandinavian
lounge areas with reclining chairs as well as a sundeck
A separate dining offer for the freight drivers will also be added to the route with the new vessels
Freight capacity: 2,875 lane metres + car deck
With the continued expansion of Stena Line’s operations in the Baltic Sea
on 19 January the new ferry Stena Baltica has made its maiden voyage on the Ventspils‒Nynäshamn route
Henceforth it will share this route with Stena Scandica
which will join Stena Livia on the Liepāja–Travemünde route
Stena Baltica is identical to the Stena Scandica
which has operated between Ventspils and Nynäshamn since the summer of 2021
It is 222 metres long and has 202 cabins
and has freight capacity of 2875 lane metres
The ferry’s interior has been refurbished and offers new cabin categories
“Transporting passengers and freight in the Baltic Sea region for almost a decade now
we keep constant track of our customers’ needs and demand
and are delighted to improve our customers’ experience
Compared to ferries that previously operated the route
Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica provide 30% more freight capacity and 70% more cabin space
and a more pleasant travel experience on our vessels and routes to and from Latvia
Both new ferries are outstanding additions to Stena Line’s fleet of vessels for our customers
and this is just the first step on the path to our major plan to double the number of passengers on this Baltic Sea route over a three year period,” says Johan Edelman
The new ferries are fitted with several sustainable features and fuel efficiency improvements, such as hybrid scrubbers
ballast water cleaning systems and other solutions to offer more sustainable transportation across the Baltic Sea
The increased tonnage also means lower emissions per transported unit.
Ventspils–Nynäshamn is the shortest route between Latvia and Scandinavia and will now be operated by Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica
while the ferries Stena Flavia and Stena Livia will now be deployed on the Liepāja–Travemünde route
